Abstract
We report a metallaphotoredox strategy for stereodivergent three-component carboallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic carbonates and alkyl trifluoroborates. This redox-neutral dual catalytic protocol utilizes commercially available organic photocatalyst 4CzIPN and nickel catalysts to trigger a radical addition/alkenyl-allyl coupling sequence, enabling straightforward access to functionalized 1,4-dienes in a highly chemo-, regio-selective, and stereodivergent fashion. This reaction features a broad substrate generality and a tunable triplet energy transfer control with pyrene as a simple triplet energy modulator, offering a facile synthesis of complex trans- and cis-selective skipped dienes with the same set of readily available substrates.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the Pd-catalyzed regio-selective hydroallylations of alkynes with allylborons: cooperation of Cu(OAc)2 and dppe resulting in 1,4-dienes while combination of AdCO2H and PCy3 leading to 1,5-dienes. A unified rationalization mechanism called "Lewis-acid-base-interaction promoted deprotonation/3,3-rearrangement" was proposed. Compared with the commonly reported metathesis pathway to only afford the metal-allyl intermediate, in the newly established mechanism, an additional Brønsted acid (as an initiator of the Pd0 oxidative addition) is generated by the interaction of the allylboron (Lewis acid) B atom with the nBuOH (Lewis base) O atom, and subsequent 3,3-rearrangement ensures the thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction. In addition, it was found that excess Cu(OAc)2 plays two potential roles in the oxidative addition/alkyne insertion: (i) the participation of one AcO- of Cu(OAc)2 ensures a large orbital overlap between the migrating H and Pd atoms, facilitating the formal AcO-H cleavage and (ii) the extra (OAc)2Cu···O(carboxyl) σ-coordination indirectly contributes to the (Me)C≡C(Ph) insertion into the Pd-H bond. Further analysis showed that the origin of the regioselectivity is closely related to the employed phosphorus ligand. These revealed results, which have been overlooked in the previous documents, would aid the development of new related catalytic reactions.

Abstract
The catalytic bis-allylation of alkynes is an important but challenging protocol to construct all-carbon tetra-substituted alkenes. Particularly, the catalytic unsymmetrical bis-allylation of alkynes remains as an underexplored task to date. We herein report an unprecedented unsymmetrical bis-allylation by simultaneously utilizing electrophilic trifluoromethyl alkene and nucleophilic allylboronate as the allylic reagents. With the aid of robust Ni0 /NHC catalysis, valuable skipped trienes can be obtained in high regio- and stereo-selectivities under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction may proceed through a β-fluorine elimination of a nickelacycle followed by a transmetalation step with allylboronate. The present method exhibits a good tolerance of various functional groups. Besides, the skipped triene products can undergo an array of elaborate transformations, which highlights the potential applications of this strategy.

Abstract
A new, efficient and practical method for the three-component arylative coupling of aldehydes, alkynes and arylboronic acids has been developed through nickel catalysis. This transformation provides diverse Z-selective tetrasubstituted allylic alcohols without the use of any aggressive oragnometallic nucleophiles or reductants. Moreover, benzylalcohols are viable coupling partners via oxidation state manipulation and arylative coupling in one single catalytic cycle. This reaction features a direct and flexible approach for the preparation of stereodefined arylated allylic alcohols with broad substrate scope under mild conditions. The utility of this protocol is demonstrated through the synthesis of diverse biologically active molecular derivatives.

Abstract
CO2-promoted and Ni-catalyzed direct hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic alcohols has been achieved. Various 1,4-dienes could be synthesized in good yield with excellent Markovnikov selectivity for alkyl- and aryl-substituted terminal alkynes under mild reaction conditions. A gram-scale reaction gives considerable yield. Preliminary mechanistic studies support the reaction pathway through sequential carboxylation/allylnickelation/lithium bicarbonate nickelation/transmetalation in the hydroallylation of alkynes with allylic alcohols in the presence of CO2.

Abstract
Nickel(0) nanoparticles coordinated to NHC ligands bearing N-coordinated cinnamyl moieties were readily prepared by reduction of a [NiCpBr(NHC-cinnamyl)] complex with methyl magnesium bromide. The combination of a strong σ-donor NHC ligand with a π-coordinating appended cinnamyl moiety likely prevents nickel(0) nanoparticle aggregation to larger inactive species, and allows the effective and (Z)-selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes and ynamides.

Abstract
Triflic acids/silanes as cooperative reductants enable the convenient transformation of CO bonds through a multistep reaction pathway in one pot. Electrolysis of the acidic reaction mixture significantly improved carbonyl reduction and thus facilitated the generation of benzyl carbocations, which show high reactivity towards electron-rich heteroarenes for C-C bond formation.

Abstract
Herein we report the divergent reactivity of 2,2-dialkyl-3-(E)-alkenyl N-tosylhydrazones using Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling conditions, which enable the Z-selective synthesis of 3-aryl-1,4-dienes and gem-dialkyl vinylcyclopropanes. We found that the dialkylbiaryl phosphine ligand SPhos was the optimal ligand for this transformation producing skipped dienes in up to 83% isolated yield. The ratio of skipped diene to vinylcyclopropane is dependent on both the structure of the α,α-disubstituted hydrazones and the aryl halide partner. Using sterically encumbered aryl bromides provided the trans-cyclopropane products selectively in up to 69% yield. The reaction is stereospecific and stereoselective and occurs alongside a competing 1,2-alkenyl group migration pathway.

Abstract
Covering: 2000-2020The 1,4-diene motif, also known as a skipped diene, is widespread across various classes of natural products including alkaloids, fatty acids, terpenoids, and polyketides as part of either the finalized structure or a biosynthetic intermediate. The prevalence of this nonconjugated diene system in nature has resulted in numerous encounters in the total synthesis literature. However, skipped dienes have not been extensively reviewed, which could be attributed to overshadowing by the more recognized 1,3-diene system. In this review, we aim to highlight the relevance of skipped dienes in natural products through the lens of total synthesis. Subjects that will be covered include nomenclature, structural properties, prevalence in natural products, synthetic strategies and the future direction of the field.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed cascade allylative dicarbofunctionalization of aryl phenol-tethered alkynes with allyl iodides is described. A series of polysubstituted spirocyclo-containing skipped dienes with an all-carbon tetrasubstituted alkene unit are synthesized through this convenient process. The cascade reaction proceeds selectively through dearomative C-allylation instead of O-allylation of aryl phenols.

Abstract
A case study on the effect of the employment of two different NHC ligands in complexes [Ni(NHC)2] (NHC=iPr2ImMe1Me, Mes2Im 2) and their behavior towards alkynes is reported. The reaction of a mixture of [Ni2(iPr2ImMe)4(μ‐(η2 : η2)‐COD)] B/ [Ni(iPr2ImMe)2(η4‐COD)] B’ or [Ni(Mes2Im)2] 2, respectively, with alkynes afforded complexes [Ni(NHC)2(η2‐alkyne)] (NHC=iPr2ImMe: alkyne=MeC≡CMe 3, H7C3C≡CC3H74, PhC≡CPh 5, MeOOCC≡CCOOMe 6, Me3SiC≡CSiMe37, PhC≡CMe 8, HC≡CC3H79, HC≡CPh 10, HC≡C(p‐Tol) 11, HC≡C(4‐tBu‐C6H4) 12, HC≡CCOOMe 13; NHC=Mes2Im: alkyne=MeC≡CMe 14, MeOOCC≡CCOOMe 15, PhC≡CMe 16, HC≡C(4‐tBu‐C6H4) 17, HC≡CCOOMe 18). Unusual rearrangement products 11 a and 12 a were identified for the complexes of the terminal alkynes HC≡C(p‐Tol) and HC≡C(4‐tBu‐C6H4), 11 and 12, which were formed by addition of a C−H bond of one of the NHC N‐iPr methyl groups to the C≡C triple bond of the coordinated alkyne. Complex 2 catalyzes the cyclotrimerization of 2‐butyne, 4‐octyne, diphenylacetylene, dimethyl acetylendicarboxylate, 1‐pentyne, phenylacetylene and methyl propiolate at ambient conditions, whereas 1Me is not a good catalyst. The reaction of 2 with 2‐butyne was monitored in some detail, which led to a mechanistic proposal for the cyclotrimerization at [Ni(NHC)2]. DFT calculations reveal that the differences between 1Me and 2 for alkyne cyclotrimerization lie in the energy profile of the initiation steps, which is very shallow for 2, and each step is associated with only a moderate energy change. The higher stability of 3 compared to 14 is attributed to a better electron transfer from the NHC to the metal to the alkyne ligand for the N‐alkyl substituted NHC, to enhanced Ni‐alkyne backbonding due to a smaller CNHC−Ni−CNHC bite angle, and to less steric repulsion of the smaller NHC iPr2ImMe.

Abstract
We present a series of experimental and computational mechanistic investigations of an unusually facile example of Ni-catalyzed C-O bond formation. Our method, originally reported in 2016, involves the formation of cyclic enol ethers from vinyl iodides bearing pendant alcohol groups. Our findings suggest that the observed reactivity arises from the coordination of the olefin in the vinyl iodide starting material and the enol ether product with Ni(0) intermediates. Density functional theory calculations reveal a plausible catalytic mechanism involving a Ni(II)/Ni(0) redox cycle featuring two-electron C-I oxidative addition and C-O reductive elimination steps. The direct formation of a η 2-enol ether Ni(0) complex from a key Ni(II) alkoxide intermediate dramatically alters the free energy (ΔG) for the vinyl C-O reductive elimination step relative to other examples of C-O reductive elimination at Ni(II). Furthermore, efficient σ-π mixing in the course of vinyl C-O reductive elimination leads to lower computed kinetic barriers (ΔG ‡) relative to those of aryl C-O reductive elimination. The conclusions drawn from these computational models are supported by synthetic organometallic experiments, whereby a vinyl-Ni(II) iodide intermediate was isolated, characterized, and proved to yield enol ether, following exposure to triethylamine. We conducted further experiments and computations, which indicated that the two-electron oxidative addition of vinyl iodides by Ni(0) depends on the formation of an η 2-vinyl iodide precomplex, based on the observation of one-electron activation of the same vinyl iodide in the presence of sterically encumbering ligands (e.g., tricyclohexylphosphine).

Abstract
Methanol is an abundant and renewable chemical raw material, but its use as a C1 source in C-C bond coupling reactions still constitutes a big challenge, and the known methods are limited to the use of expensive and noble metal catalysts such as Ru, Rh and Ir. We herein report nickel-catalyzed direct coupling of alkynes and methanol, providing direct access to valuable allylic alcohols in good yields and excellent chemo- and regioselectivity. The approach features a broad substrate scope and high atom-, step- and redox-economy. Moreover, this method was successfully extended to the synthesis of [5,6]-bicyclic hemiacetals through a cascade cyclization reaction of alkynones and methanol.

Abstract
Alkene hydrocarbofunctionalization represents one of the most important classes of chemical transformations, but related branched-selective examples with unactivated olefins are scarce. Here, we report that catalytic amounts of a dimeric Ni(I) complex and an exogenous alkoxide base promote Markovnikov-selective hydroarylation(alkenylation) of unactivated and activated olefins using organo bromides or triflates derived from widely available phenols and ketones. Products bearing aryl- and alkenyl-substituted tertiary and quaternary centers could be isolated in up to 95% yield and >99:1 regioisomeric ratios. Contrary to previous dual-catalytic methods that rely on metal-hydride atom transfer (MHAT) to the olefin prior to carbofunctionalization with a cocatalyst, our mechanistic evidence points toward a nonradical reaction pathway that begins with site-selective carbonickelation across the C═C bond followed by hydride transfer using alkoxide as the hydride source. Utility of the single-catalyst protocol is highlighted through the synthesis of medicinally relevant scaffolds.

Abstract
A chromium-catalyzed dimerization/hydroboration of allenes is developed to access synthetically versatile boryl-functionalized skipped dienes with a catalyst generated in situ from CrCl2 and a pyridine-2,6-diimine ligand mes PDI. A variety of allenes reacted with pinacolborane (HBpin) to afford the corresponding boryl-functionalized (E,Z)-1,4-dienes in high yields and with excellent selectivity. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic studies suggest that this chromium-catalyzed reaction probably proceeds through a chromium(I) hydride intermediate.

Abstract
Umpolung (polarity reversal) tactics of aldehydes/ketones have greatly broadened carbonyl chemistry by enabling transformations with electrophilic reagents and deoxygenative functionalizations. Herein, we report the first ruthenium-catalyzed β-selective alkylation of vinylpyridines with both naturally abundant aromatic and aliphatic aldehyde/ketones via N2H4 mediated deoxygenative couplings. Compared with one-electron umpolung of carbonyls to alcohols, this two-electron umpolung strategy realized reductive deoxygenation targets, which were not only applicable to the regioselective alkylation of a broad range of 2/4-alkene substituted pyridines, but also amenable to challenging 3-vinyl and steric-embedded internal pyridines as well as their analogous heterocyclic structures. Ruthenium-catalyzed β-selective alkylation of vinylpyridines with carbonyls (both aromatic and aliphatic ketones/aldehydes) via N2H4 mediated deoxygenative couplings was achieved.![]()

Abstract
The reductive coupling of alkynes represents a powerful strategy for the rapid synthesis of highly substituted 1,3-dienes. This method has the advantages of high atom and step economy, and readily available substrates. Unfortunately, the intermolecular coupling of unsymmetrical internal alkynes remains extremely challenging due to the difficulty in controlling self-dimerization and cross-coupling, as well as stereo- and regioselectivity. Previous reports are still limited to intramolecular processes or the use of stoichiometric amounts of metal catalyst. Herein, we report that nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling of two unsymmetrical internal alkynes can overcome the above-mentioned limitations by using a hemilabile directing group strategy to control the regioselectivity. A series of synthetically challenging penta-substituted 1,3-dienes are obtained in good yields with high regio- and enantioselectivity (mostly > 20/1 rr, >90% ee). The reductive coupling of alkynes represents a powerful strategy for the rapid synthesis of highly substituted 1,3-dienes.![]()

Abstract
A Ba/Pd cooperative catalysis system was developed to enable the dehydrative cross-coupling of allylic alcohols with P-ylides to occur directly and promote a subsequent Wittig reaction in one pot. A variety of multisubstituted 1,4-dienes were isolated in good to excellent yields with broad P-ylides (stabilized by both ester and ketone carbonyl groups) and aldehyde (aliphatic and aromatic) substrates with excellent E selectivity.

Abstract
A cobalt-diphosphine catalyst has been found to promote a selective 1:2 coupling reaction between aldehydes and allenes to form β,δ-dialkylidene ketones, featuring skipped diene moieties, with high regioselectivities and stereoselectivities. The reaction is distinct from previously reported, rhodium-catalyzed aldehyde-allene 1:2 coupling to afford β,γ-dialkylidene ketones bearing 1,3-diene moieties. The present hydroacylative dimerization involves a unique allene/allene oxidative cyclization mode to form a C1-C2 linkage between the allene molecules.

Abstract
By exploiting the reactivity of a vinyl-Pd species, we control the regioselectivity in hydroallylation of alkynes under Pd-hydride catalysis. A monophosphine ligand and carboxylic acid combination promotes 1,5-dienes through a pathway involving isomerization of alkynes to allenes. In contrast, a bisphosphine ligand and copper cocatalyst favor 1,4-dienes via a mechanism that involves transmetalation. Our study highlights how to access different isomers by diverting a common organometallic intermediate.

Abstract
The nickel-catalyzed synthesis of tetrasubstituted cyclobutenes from alkynes is reported. This transformation is uniquely promoted by the use of a primary aminophosphine, an unusual ligand in nickel catalysis. Mechanistic insights for this new transformation are provided, and postreaction modifications of the cyclobutene products to stereodefined cyclic and acyclic compounds are reported, including the synthesis of epi-truxillic acid.

Abstract
The synthesis and catalytic activity of several classes of NHC-Ni(0) pre-catalysts stabilized by electron-withdrawing alkenes are described. Variations in the structure of fumarate and acrylate ligands modulate the reactivity and stability of the NHC-Ni(0) pre-catalysts and lead to practical and versatile catalysts for a variety of transformations. The catalytic activity and efficiency of representative members of this class of catalysts have been evaluated in reductive couplings of aldehydes and alkynes and in N-arylations of aryl chlorides.

Abstract
A ligand-controlled regiodivergent and enantioselective copper-catalyzed intermolecular hydroallylation of alkynes with allylic phosphates and hydrosilanes has been achieved for the first time. The chiral bidentate sulfonate-containing N-heterocyclic carbene ligated CuCl complex leads to enantioenriched SN 2'-type products, whereas the use of the IMesCuCl catalyst affords SN 2-type products. Thus a range of chiral branched and achiral linear 1,4-dienes could be facilely synthesized from readily available alkynes in a regiodivergent manner.
