Expanding Thorium Hydride Chemistry Through Th²⁺, Including the Synthesis of a Mixed-Valent Th⁴⁺/Th³⁺ Hydride Complex

Prediction of Redox Potentials for U, Np, Pu, and Am in Aqueous Solution

The redox properties of the actinides in aqueous solution are important for fuel production/reprocessing and understanding the environmental impact of nuclear waste. The redox potentials for U, Np, Pu, and Am in oxidation states from 0 up to VII (as appropriate) in aqueous solutions have been predicted at the density functional theory level with the B3LYP functional, Stuttgart small core pseudopotential basis sets for the actinides, and explicit (30H2O molecules)/implicit treatment of the aqueous solvent using the self-consistent reaction field COSMO and SMD approaches for the implicit solvation. The predictions of the structural parameters of clusters incorporating first and second solvation shells are consistent with the available experimental data. Our results are typically within 0.2 V of the available experimental data using two explicit solvation shells with an implicit solvent model. The use of the PW91 functional substantially improved the prediction of the Pu(VI/V) redox couple. The redox couples for An(VI/IV) and An(V/IV) which involve the addition of protons and removal of the actinyl oxygens led to slightly larger differences from an experiment. The An(IV/0) and An(III/0) couples were reliably predicted with our approach. Predictions of the unknown An(II/I) redox potentials were negative, consistent with expectations, and predictions for unknown An(VII/VI), An(III/II), and An(II/0) redox couples improve prior estimates.

Planar Tetranuclear Uranium Hydride Cluster Supported by ansa-Bis(cyclopentadienyl) Ligands

Polynuclear metal hydride clusters play important roles in various catalytic processes, with most of the reported polynuclear metal hydride clusters adopting a polyhedral three-dimensional structure. Herein, we report the first example of a planar tetranuclear uranium hydride cluster [(CpCMe2CMe2Cp)U]4(μ2-H)4(μ3-H)4 (U4H8). It was synthesized by reacting an ansa-bis(cyclopentadienyl) ligand-supported uranium chloride precursor [(CpCMe2CMe2Cp)U]3(μ2-Cl)3(μ3-Cl)2 with NaHBEt3. The presence of hydrides in U4H8 was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and its reactivity with phenol and carbon tetrachloride. DFT calculations also facilitated the determination of the hydrides' positions in U4H8, featuring four bridging μ2-H ligands and four face-capping μ3-H ligands, with the four U centers arranged in a rhombic geometry. The U4H8 represents not only the first example of planar polynuclear actinide metal hydride cluster but also the uranium hydride cluster with the highest nuclearity reported to date.

f-Block hydride complexes - synthesis, structure and reactivity

Complexes formed between the heaviest and lightest elements in the periodic table yield the f-block hydrides, a unique class of compounds with wide-ranging utility and interest, from catalysis to light-responsive materials and nuclear waste storage. Recent developments in syntheses and analytics, such as exploiting low-oxidation state metal ions and improvements in X-ray diffraction tools, have transformed our ability to understand, access and manipulate these important species. This perspective brings together insights from binary metal hydrides, with molecular solution phase studies on heteroleptic complexes and gas phase investigations. It aims to provide an overview of how the f-element influences hydride formation, structure and reactivity including the sometimes-surprising power of co-ligands to tune their behaviour towards a variety of applications.

Electronic Delocalization and σ-Aromaticity in Heterometallic Cluster with Multiple Thorium-Palladium Bonds

Research on metal-metal bonds involving f-block actinides, such as thorium, lags far behind the well-studied metal-metal bonds of d-block transition metals. The complexes with Th-TM bonds are extremely rare; all previously identified examples have only a single Th-TM bond with the Th center at an invariably +IV oxidation state. Herein, we report a series of Th2Pdn (n = 2, 3, and 6) clusters (complexes 3, 4, and 7) with multiple Th(III)-Pd bonds. Theoretical studies reveal that the Th2Pdn unit allows electronic delocalization and σ aromaticity, leading to unexpected closed-shell singlet structures for these Th(III) species. This electronic delocalization is evident in the highest occupied molecular orbital of Th(III) complexes and facilitates a 2e reduction of alkyne by complex 7, resulting in the formation of 8. Complexes 7 and 8 are distinctive in featuring a Th2Pd6 core with six and eight Th-Pd bonds, respectively, making them the largest known d-f heterometallic clusters exhibiting metal-metal bonding.

Synthesis and Structure of [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2Th(bipy) and Its Reactivity toward Small Molecules

Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

Investigating Steric and Electronic Effects in the Synthesis of Square Planar 6d1 Th(III) Complexes

The factors affecting the formation and crystal structures of unusual 6d1 Th(III) square planar aryloxide complexes, as exemplified by [Th(OArMe)4]1- (OArMe = OC6H2tBu2-2,6-Me-4), were explored by synthetic and reduction studies of a series of related Th(IV) tetrakis(aryloxide) complexes, Th(OArR)4 (OArR = OC6H2tBu2-2,6-R-4). Specifically, electronic, steric, and countercation effects were explored by varying the aryloxide ligand, the alkali metal reducing agent, and the alkali metal chelating agent. Salt metathesis reactions between ThBr4(DME)2 (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) and 4 equiv of the appropriate potassium aryloxide salt were used to prepare a series of Th(IV) aryloxide complexes in high yields: Th(OArH)4 (OArH = OC6H3tBu2-2,6), Th(OArtBu)4 (OArtBu = OC6H2tBu3-2,4,6), Th(OArOMe)4 (OArOMe = OC6H2tBu2-2,6-OMe-4), and Th(OArPh)4 (OArPh = OC6H2tBu2-2,6-Ph-4). Th(OArH)4 can be reduced by KC8, Na, or Li in the absence or presence of 2.2.2-cryptand (crypt) or 18-crown-6 (crown) to form dark purple solutions that have EPR and UV-visible spectra similar to those of the square planar Th(III) complex, [Th(OArMe)4]1-. Hence, the para position of the aryloxide ligand does not have to be alkylated to obtain the Th(III) complexes. Furthermore, reduction of Th(OArOMe)4, Th(OArtBu)4, and Th(OArPh)4 with KC8 in THF generated purple solutions with EPR and UV-visible spectra that are similar to those of the previously reported Th(III) anion, [Th(OArMe)4]1-. Although many of these reduction reactions did not produce single crystals suitable for study by X-ray diffraction, reduction of Th(OArH)4, Th(OArtBu)4, and Th(OArOMe)4 with Li provided X-ray quality crystals whose structures had square planar coordination geometries. Reduction of Th(OArPh)4 with Li also gave a product with EPR and UV-visible spectra that matched those of [Th(OArMe)4]1-, but X-ray quality crystals of the reduction product were too unstable to provide data. Neither Th(Odipp)4(THF)2 (Odipp = OC6H3iPr2-2,6) nor Th(Odmp)4(THF)2 (Odmp = OC6H3Me2-2,6) could be reduced to Th(III) products under similar conditions. Reduction of U(OArH)3(THF) with KC8 in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand (crypt) was examined for comparison and formed [K(crypt)][U(OArH)4], which has a tetrahedral arrangement of the aryloxide ligands. Moreover, no further reduction was observed when either [K(crypt)][U(OArH)4] or [K(crown)(THF)2][U(OArH)4] were treated with KC8 or Li.

Separation of lead-212 from natural thorium solution utilizing novel sulfonamide dibenzo-18-crown-6

The extraction of lead-212 (212Pb) from radioactive thorium (Th) waste is immensely important, as it serves to mitigate environmental risks associated with radioactive waste and provides a vital source for medical isotopes. To economically extract 212Pb from thorium, we synthesized a novel extractant known as 2,13-disulfonyldiethylamine dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DSADB18C6). We assessed its performance in isolating Pb(II) by employing stable lead and optimizing the parameters of the extraction system. The results showcased an exceptional ability to extract Pb(II) efficiently. Within 10 minutes, using 20 mmol of DSADB18C6 and under conditions of 10 mg L-1 lead concentration (HNO3 = 0.5 mol L-1), the extraction efficiency reached up to 96.1%. Even after four rounds of stripping with 0.4 mol L-1 ammonium citrate, the efficiency remained at 90.2%. Moreover, the extraction stoichiometry and thermodynamics revealed that DSADB18C6 exhibited superior extraction performance compared to the commercial extractant 4',4'',(5'')-di-(tert-butyldicyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuDC18C6), in line with the density functional theory (DFT) calculation result. Furthermore, we successfully separated 212Pb from the thorium nitrate solution, maintaining radioactive equilibrium with its progeny. Gamma-spectroscopy confirmed a recovery yield of extraction exceeding 85.7%. This study presents a viable approach, underscoring the potential of DSADB18C6 as a promising extractant for the effective separation of 212Pb from radioactive thorium sources.

Perplexing EPR Signals from 5f36d1 U(II) Complexes

Metal complexes with unpaired electrons in orbitals of different angular momentum quantum numbers (e.g., f and d orbitals) are unusual and opportunities to study the interactions among these electrons are rare. X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) data were collected at <10 and 77 K on 10 U(II) complexes with 5f36d1 electron configurations and on some analogous Ce(II), Pr(II), and Nd(II) complexes with 4fn5d1 electron configurations. The U(II) compounds unexpectedly display similar two-line axial signals with g|| = 2.04 and g⊥ = 2.00 at 77 K. In contrast, U(II) complexes with 5f4 configurations are EPR-silent. Unlike U(II), the congenic 4f35d1 Nd(II) complex is EPR-silent. The Ce(II) complex with a 4f15d1 configuration is also EPR-silent, but a signal is observed for the Pr(II) complex, which has a 4f25d1 configuration. Whether or not an EPR signal is expected for these complexes depends on the coupling between f and d electrons. Since the coupling in U(II) systems is expected to be sufficiently strong to preclude an EPR signal from compounds with a 5f36d1 configuration, the results are viewed as unexplained phenomena. However, they do show that 5f36d1 U(II) samples can be differentiated from 5f4 U(II) complexes by EPR spectroscopy.

Two-Electron Redox Reactivity of Thorium Supported by Redox-Active Tripodal Frameworks

The high stability of the + IVoxidation state limits thorium redox reactivity. Here we report the synthesis and the redox reactivity of two Th(IV) complexes supported by the arene-tethered tris(siloxide) tripodal ligands [(KOSiR2 Ar)3 -arene)]. The two-electron reduction of these Th(IV) complexes generates the doubly reduced [KTh((OSi(Ot Bu)2 Ar)3 -arene)(THF)2 ] (2OtBu ) and [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Th((OSiPh2 Ar)3 -arene)(THF)2 ](2Ph -crypt) where the formal oxidation state of Th is +II. Structural and computational studies indicate that the reduction occurred at the arene anchor of the ligand. The robust tripodal frameworks store in the arene anchor two electrons that become available at the metal center for the two-electron reduction of a broad range of substrates (N2 O, COT, CHT, Ph2 N2 , Ph3 PS and O2 ) while retaining the ligand framework. This work shows that arene-tethered tris(siloxide) tripodal ligands allow implementation of two-electron redox chemistry at the thorium center while retaining the ligand framework unchanged.

Spectroscopic and Computational Evidence of Uranium Dihydrogen Complexes

Dihydrogen complexation, a phenomenon with robust precedent in the transition metal series, is spectroscopically detected for a uranium(III) complex and thereby extended for the first time to the 5f series. The vacant coordination site and low valence of (C5H4SiMe3)3U prove to be key to the reversible formation of (C5H4SiMe3)3U-H2 (complex 1), and the paramagnetism of the f3 center facilitates the detection of complex 1 by NMR spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the delocalization of the 5f electron density from (C5H4SiMe3)3U onto the side-on dihydrogen ligand is crucial to complex formation, an unusual bonding situation for an actinide acid-base complex. The spectroscopic and computational results are compared to those reported for lanthanide metallocenes to yield insight into the nature of─and future possibilities for─f-element dihydrogen complexation.

Cooperative dihydrogen activation with unsupported uranium-metal bonds and characterization of a terminal U(iv) hydride

Cooperative chemistry between two or more metal centres can show enhanced reactivity compared to the monometallic fragments. Given the paucity of actinide-metal bonds, especially those with group 13, we targeted uranium(iii)-aluminum(i) and -gallium(i) complexes as we envisioned the low-valent oxidation state of both metals would lead to novel, cooperative reactivity. Herein, we report the molecular structure of [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U-E(C5Me5)], E = Al, Ga, Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, and their reactivity with dihydrogen. The reaction of H2 with the U(iii)-Al(i) complex affords a trihydroaluminate complex, [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(μ2-(H)3)-Al(C5Me5)] through a formal three-electron metal-based reduction, with concomitant formation of a terminal U(iv) hydride, [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(H)]. Noteworthy is that neither U(iii) complexes nor [(C5Me5)Al]4 are capable of reducing dihydrogen on their own. To make the terminal hydride in higher yields, the reaction of [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(THF)] with half an equivalent of diethylzinc generates [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(CH2CH3)] or treatment of [(C5Me5)2U(i)(Me)] with KOMes forms [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(CH3)], which followed by hydrogenation with either complex cleanly affords [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(H)]. All complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic and structural methods and are rare examples of cooperative chemistry in f element chemistry, dihydrogen activation, and stable, terminal ethyl and hydride compounds with an f element.

Stabilization of Pu(IV) in PuBr4(OPCy3)2 and Comparisons with Structurally Similar ThX4(OPR3)2 (R = Cy, Ph) Molecules

The pursuit of a trivalent plutonium halide phosphine oxide compound, e.g., "PuBr3(OPR)3," instead led to the isolation of the tetravalent trans-PuIVBr4(OPCy3)2, PuBr/Cy, compound by spontaneous oxidation of PuIII. The donating nature of phosphine oxides has allowed the isolation and characterization of PuBr/Cy by crystallographic, multinuclear NMR, solid state, and solution phase UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic techniques. The presence of a putative plutonyl(VI) complex formulated as "trans-PuVIO2Br2(OPCy3)2" was also observed spectroscopically and tentatively by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as a cocrystal of PuBr/Cy. A series of trans-ThX4(OPCy3)2 (X = Cl, ThCl/Cy; Br, ThBr/Cy; I, ThI/Cy) complexes were synthesized for comparison to PuBr/Cy. The triphenylphosphine oxide, OPPh3, complexes, trans-AnI4(OPPh3)2 (An = Th, ThI/Ph; U, UI/Ph), were also synthesized for comparison, completing the series trans-UX4(OPPh3)2 (X = Cl, Br, I), UX/Ph. To enable the synthesis of ThI/Cy and ThI/Ph, a new nonaqueous thorium iodide starting material, ThI4(Et2O)2, was synthesized. The syntheses of organic solvent soluble ThI4L2 (L = Et2O, OPCy3, and OPPh3) are the first examples of crystallographically characterized neutral thorium tetraiodide materials beyond binary ThI4. To show the viability of ThI4(Et2O)2 as a starting material for organothorium chemistry, (C5Me4H)3ThI was synthesized and crystallographically characterized.

Persilylation of ferrocene: the ultimate discipline in sterically overcrowded metal complexes

We report the preparation and structural characterization of the first persilylated metallocene via the metalation of decabromoferrocene. Although Grignard conditions turned out to be insufficient due to the steric and electronic effects of silyl groups causing a decreased nucleophilicity of the metalated intermediates, stepwise lithium-halogen exchange yields complex mixtures of polysilylated compounds FeC₁₀DMS_nH_10-n (n = 10, 9, 8) including the targeted decasilylated ferrocene. These mixtures were successfully separated allowing a systematic study of silylation effects on ferrocene by XRD, CV, NMR and UV/vis spectroscopy supported by DFT calculations. The findings were used to develop a high-yielding and simple preparation method to generate a tenfold substituted overcrowded ferrocene, FeC₁₀DMS₈Me₂.

Bonding and Reactivity in Terminal versus Bridging Arenide Complexes of Thorium Acting as ThII Synthons

Thorium redox chemistry is extremely scarce due to the high stability of Th^IV . Here we report two unique examples of thorium arenide complexes prepared by reduction of a Th^IV -siloxide complex in presence of naphthalene, the mononuclear arenide complex [K(OSi(O^t Bu)₃ )₃ Th(η⁶ -C₁₀ H₈ )] (1) and the inverse-sandwich complex [K(OSi(O^t Bu)₃ )₃ Th]₂ (μ-η⁶ ,η⁶ -C₁₀ H₈ )] (2). The electrons stored in these complexes allow the reduction of a broad range of substrates (N₂ O, AdN₃ , CO₂ , HBBN). Higher reactivity was found for the complex 1 which reacts with the diazoolefin IDipp=CN₂ to yield the unexpected Th^IV amidoalkynyl complex 5 via a terminal N-heterocyclic vinylidene intermediate. This work showed that arenides can act as convenient redox-active ligands for implementing thorium-ligand cooperative multielectron transfer and that the reactivity can be tuned by the arenide binding mode.

Facile Solvent-Free Mechanochemical Synthesis of UI3 and Lanthanoid Iodides

Lewis base-free lanthanoid (Ln) and actinoid (An) iodides are difficult to obtain, as standard protocols describe syntheses in solutions of donor solvents which are ultimately hard to remove. We have now established a mechanochemical approach towards the synthesis of Lewis base-free f-block metal iodides with excellent yields. In particular, we describe herein the synthesis of EuI2 as an example of a divalent lanthanoid iodide, of CeI3 as an example of a trivalent lanthanoid iodide, and of UI3 as the most important actinoid iodide. Each can be obtained in high yield with minimal work-up, presenting the most efficient and simple synthetic route to access these materials to date.

Anion-induced disproportionation of Th(III) complexes to form Th(II) and Th(IV) products

A new synthesis of Th(II) complexes has been identified involving addition of simple MX salts (M = Li, Na, K; X = H, Cl, Me, N₃) to Cp''₃Th^III [Cp'' = [C₅H₃(SiMe₃)₂] in the presence of 18-crown-6 or 2.2.2-cryptand, forming [M(chelate)][Cp''₃Th^II] and Cp''₃Th^IVX. Cp^tet₃Th^III (Cp^tet = C₅Me₄H) reacts with KH to form Cp^tet₃Th^IVH and the C-H bond activation product, [K(crypt)]{[Cp^tet₂Th^IVH[η¹:η⁵-C₅Me₃H(CH₂)]}.

Small-Molecule Activation Mediated by [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(bipy)

The uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(bipy) (2), is readily accessible in good yield by adding potassium graphite (KC₈) to a mixture of [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂UCl₂ (1) and 2,2'-bipyridine. Compound 2 was fully characterized and employed for small-molecule activation. It has been demonstrated that 2 may serve as a synthon for [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph₂E₂ (E = S, Se), alkynes, and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as diazabutadienes, azine (Ph₂C═N)₂, o-benzoquinone, pyridine N-oxide, CS₂, isothiocyanates, and organic azides. However, upon exposure of 2 to thio-ketone Ph₂CS, aldehyde p-MePhCHO, ketone Ph₂CO, imine PhCH═NPh, azine (PhCH═N)₂, and nitrile PhCN, it may also promote C-C coupling reactions forming [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CS)] (16), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (17), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CO)] (18), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNPh)] (19), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (20), and [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(N₂C₁₀H₇C(Ph)NH)] (22), respectively, in quantitative conversion. Furthermore, in the presence of CuI, a single-electron transfer (SET) process is observed to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(I)(bipy) (15).

Density Functional Theory Analysis of the Importance of Coordination Geometry for 5f36d1 versus 5f4 Electron Configurations in U(II) Complexes

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on four known and seven hypothetical U(II) complexes indicate the importance of coordination geometry in favoring 5f³6d¹ versus 5f⁴ electronic ground states. The known [Cp″₃U]^-, [Cp^tet₃U]^-, and [U(NR₂)₃]^- [Cp″ = C₅H₃(SiMe₃)₂, Cp^tet = C₅Me₄H, and R = SiMe₃] anions were found to have 5f³6d¹ ground states, while a 5f⁴ ground state was found for the known compound (NHAr^iPr₆)₂U. The UV-visible spectra of the known 5f³6d¹ compounds were simulated via time-dependent DFT and are in qualitative agreement with the experimental spectra. For the hypothetical U(II) compounds, the 5f³6d¹ configuration is predicted for [U(CHR₂)₃]^-, [U(H₃BH)₃]^-, [U(OAr')₄]^2-, and [(C₈H₈)U]^2- (OAr' = O-C₆H₂^tBu₂-2,6-Me-4). In the case of [U(bnz')₄]^2- (bnz' = CH₂-C₆H₄^tBu-4), a 5f³ configuration with a ligand-based radical was found as the ground state.

A crystalline tri-thorium cluster with σ-aromatic metal-metal bonding

Metal-metal bonding is a widely studied area of chemistry^1-3, and has become a mature field spanning numerous d transition metal and main group complexes^4-7. By contrast, actinide-actinide bonding, which is predicted to be weak⁸, is currently restricted to spectroscopically detected gas-phase U₂ and Th₂ (refs. ^9,10), U₂H₂ and U₂H₄ in frozen matrices at 6-7 K (refs. ^11,12), or fullerene-encapsulated U₂ (ref. ¹³). Furthermore, attempts to prepare thorium-thorium bonds in frozen matrices have produced only ThH_n (n = 1-4)¹⁴. Thus, there are no isolable actinide-actinide bonds under normal conditions. Computational investigations have explored the probable nature of actinide-actinide bonding¹⁵, concentrating on localized σ-, π-, and δ-bonding models paralleling d transition metal analogues, but predictions in relativistic regimes are challenging and have remained experimentally unverified. Here, we report thorium-thorium bonding in a crystalline cluster, prepared and isolated under normal experimental conditions. The cluster exhibits a diamagnetic, closed-shell singlet ground state with a valence-delocalized three-centre-two-electron σ-aromatic bond^16,17 that is counter to the focus of previous theoretical predictions. The experimental discovery of actinide σ-aromatic bonding adds to main group and d transition metal analogues, extending delocalized σ-aromatic bonding to the heaviest elements in the periodic table and to principal quantum number six, and constitutes a new approach to elaborate actinide-actinide bonding.

Electrochemical studies of tris(cyclopentadienyl)thorium and uranium complexes in the +2, +3, and +4 oxidation states

Electrochemical measurements on tris(cyclopentadienyl)thorium and uranium compounds in the +2, +3, and +4 oxidation states are reported with C5H3(SiMe3)2, C5H4SiMe3, and C5Me4H ligands. The reduction potentials for both U and Th complexes trend with the electron donating abilities of the cyclopentadienyl ligand. Thorium complexes have more negative An(iii)/An(ii) reduction potentials than the uranium analogs. Electrochemical measurements of isolated Th(ii) complexes indicated that the Th(iii)/Th(ii) couple was surprisingly similar to the Th(iv)/Th(iii) couple in Cp''-ligated complexes. This suggested that Th(ii) complexes could be prepared from Th(iv) precursors and this was demonstrated synthetically by isolation of directly from UV-visible spectroelectrochemical measurements and reactions of with elemental barium indicated that the thorium system undergoes sequential one electron transformations.

Characterization of a strong covalent Th3+-Th3+ bond inside an Ih(7)-C80 fullerene cage

The nature of the actinide-actinide bonds is of fundamental importance to understand the electronic structure of the 5f elements. It has attracted considerable theoretical attention, but little is known experimentally as the synthesis of these chemical bonds remains extremely challenging. Herein, we report a strong covalent Th-Th bond formed between two rarely accessible Th³⁺ ions, stabilized inside a fullerene cage nanocontainer as Th₂@I_h(7)-C₈₀. This compound is synthesized using the arc-discharge method and fully characterized using several techniques. The single-crystal X-Ray diffraction analysis determines that the two Th atoms are separated by 3.816 Å. Both experimental and quantum-chemical results show that the two Th atoms have formal charges of +3 and confirm the presence of a strong covalent Th-Th bond inside I_h(7)-C₈₀. Moreover, density functional theory and ab initio multireference calculations suggest that the overlap between the 7s/6d hybrid thorium orbitals is so large that the bond still exists at Th-Th separations larger than 6 Å. This work demonstrates the authenticity of covalent actinide metal-metal bonds in a stable compound and deepens our fundamental understanding of f element metal bonds.

The "Hidden" Reductive [2+2+1]-Cycloaddition Chemistry of 2-Phosphaethynolate Revealed by Reduction of a Th-OCP Linkage

The reduction chemistry of the newly emerging 2‐phosphaethynolate (OCP)⁻ is not well explored, and many unanswered questions remain about this ligand in this context. We report that reduction of [Th(Tren^TIPS)(OCP)] (2, Tren^TIPS=[N(CH₂CH₂NSiPrⁱ₃)]³⁻), with RbC₈ via [2+2+1] cycloaddition, produces an unprecedented hexathorium complex [{Th(Tren^TIPS)}₆(μ‐OC₂P₃)₂(μ‐OC₂P₃H)₂Rb₄] (5) featuring four five‐membered [C₂P₃] phosphorus heterocycles, which can be converted to a rare oxo complex [{Th(Tren^TIPS)(μ‐ORb)}₂] (6) and the known cyclometallated complex [Th{N(CH₂CH₂NSiPrⁱ₃)₂(CH₂CH₂SiPrⁱ₂CHMeCH₂)}] (4) by thermolysis; thereby, providing an unprecedented example of reductive cycloaddition reactivity in the chemistry of 2‐phosphaethynolate. This has permitted us to isolate intermediates that might normally remain unseen. We have debunked an erroneous assumption of a concerted fragmentation process for (OCP)⁻, rather than cycloaddition products that then decompose with [Th(Tren^TIPS)O]⁻ essentially acting as a protecting then leaving group. In contrast, when KC₈ or CsC₈ were used the phosphinidiide C−H bond activation product [{Th(Tren^TIPS)}Th{N(CH₂CH₂NSiPrⁱ₃)₂[CH₂CH₂SiPrⁱ₂CH(Me)CH₂C(O)μ‐P]}] (3) and the oxo complex [{Th(Tren^TIPS)(μ‐OCs)}₂] (7) were isolated.

Polarised covalent thorium(iv)– and uranium(iv)–silicon bonds

We report thorium- and uranium–silicon bonds in structurally analogous complexes with surprisingly similar actinide–silicon bonding regimes.

Redox and structural properties of accessible actinide(ii) metallocalixarenes (Ac to Pu): a relativistic DFT study

The redox properties of actinides play a significant role in manipulating organometallic chemistry and energy/environment science, for being involved in fundamental concepts (oxidation state, bonding and reactivity), nuclear fuel cycles and contamination remediation. Herein, a series of trans-calix[2]pyrrole[2]benzene (H₂L²) actinide complexes (An = Ac–Pu, and oxidation states of +II and +III) have been studied by relativistic density functional theory. Reduction potentials (E⁰) of [AnL²]⁺/[AnL²] were computed within −2.45 and −1.64 V versus Fc⁺/Fc in THF, comparable to experimental values of −2.50 V for [UL^1e]/[UL^1e]⁻ (H₃L^1e = (^Ad,MeArOH)₃mesitylene and Ad = adamantyl) and −2.35 V for [U(Cp^iPr)₂]⁺/[U(Cp^iPr)₂] (Cp^iPr = C₅ⁱPr₅). The E⁰ values show an overall increasing trend from Ac to Pu but a break point at Np being lower than adjacent elements. The arene/actinide mixed reduction mechanism is proposed, showing arenes predominant in Ac–Pa complexes but diverting to metal-centered domination in U–Pu ones. Besides being consistent with previously reported those of An^III/An^II couples, the changing trend of our reduction potentials is corroborated by geometric data, topological analysis of bonds and electronic structures as well as additional calculations on actinide complexes ligated by tris(alkyloxide)arene, silyl-cyclopentadiene and octadentate Schiff-base polypyrrole in terms of electron affinity. The regularity would help to explore synthesis and property of novel actinide(ii) complex.

DFT study reveals the trend of reduction potential of [AnL²]⁺/[AnL²] (An = Ac ∼ Pu), comparable to previously reported ones of An^III/An^II and corroborated by calculations of relevant complexes and structural/bonding properties of [AnL²]^+/0.

In search of tris(trimethylsilylcyclopentadienyl) thorium

Reduction of Cp'₃ThCl, Cp'₃ThBr, and Cp'₃ThI (Cp' = C₅H₄SiMe₃) with potassium graphite generates dark blue solutions with reactivity and spectroscopic properties consistent with the formation of Cp'₃Th. The EPR and UV-visible spectra of the solutions are similar to those of crystallographically-characterized tris(cyclopentadienyl) Th(iii) complexes: [C₅H₃(SiMe₃)₂]₃Th, (C₅Me₄H)₃Th, (C₅^tBu₂H₃)₃Th, and (C₅Me₅)₃Th. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis indicates that the UV-visible spectrum is consistent with Cp'₃Th and not [Cp'₃ThBr]^1-. Although single crystals of Cp'₃Th have not been isolated, the blue solution reacts with Me₃SiCl, I₂, and HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh to afford products expected from Cp'₃Th, namely, Cp'₃ThCl, Cp'₃ThI, and Cp'₃Th(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh), respectively. Reactions with MeI give mixtures of Cp'₃ThI and Cp'₃ThMe. Evidence for further reduction of the blue solutions to a Cp'-ligated Th(ii) complex has not been observed. The crystal structures of Cp'₃ThMe and (Cp'₃Th)₂(μ-O) were also determined as part of these studies.

Isolation of a Square-Planar Th(III) Complex: Synthesis and Structure of [Th(OC6H2tBu2-2,6-Me-4)4]1

Reduction of Th(OC₆H₂^tBu₂-2,6-Me-4)₄ using either KC₈ or Li in THF forms a new example of a crystallographically characterizable Th(III) complex in the salts [K(THF)₅(Et₂O)][Th(OC₆H₂^tBu₂-2,6-Me-4)₄] and [Li(THF)₄][Th(OC₆H₂^tBu₂-2,6-Me-4)₄]. Surprisingly, in each structure the four aryloxide ligands are arranged in a square-planar geometry, the first example of this coordination mode for an f element complex. The Th(III) ion and four oxygen donor atoms are coplanar to within 0.05 Å with O-Th-O angles of 89.27(8) to 92.02(8)° between cis ligands. The ligands have Th-O-C(ipso) angles of 173.9(2) to 178.6(4)°, and the aryl rings make angles of 58.5 to 65.1° with the ThO₄ plane. The effect of the eight tert-butyl substituents in generating the unusual structure through packing and/or dispersion forces is discussed. EPR spectroscopy reveals an axial signal consistent with a metal-based radical in a planar complex. DFT calculations yield a C₄-symmetric structure that accommodates a low-lying SOMO of 6d_z² character with 7s Rydberg admixture.

The experimental determination of Th(iv)/Th(iii) redox potentials in organometallic thorium complexes

The first Th^IV/Th^III redox couple values have been determined experimentally using cyclic voltammetry (CV), which has been facilitated by the use of [ⁿBu₄N][BPh₄] as a supporting electrolyte in THF. Th(iv) and Th(iii) metallocene compounds have been studied and their redox couple values are in the range of -2.96 V to -3.32 V vs FeCp₂^+/0.

Metal Bonding with 3d and 6d Orbitals: An EPR and ENDOR Spectroscopic Investigation of Ti3+-Al and Th3+-Al Heterobimetallic Complexes

Accessing covalent bonding interactions between actinides and ligating atoms remains a central problem in the field. Our current understanding of actinide bonding is limited because of a paucity of diverse classes of compounds and the lack of established models. We recently synthesized a thorium (Th)–aluminum (Al) heterobimetallic molecule that represents a new class of low-valent Th-containing compounds. To gain further insight into this system and actinide–metal bonding more generally, it is useful to study their underlying electronic structures. Here, we report characterization by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron–nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopy of two heterobimetallic compounds: (i) a Cp^tt₂ThH₃AlCTMS₃ [TMS = Si(CH₃)₃; Cp^tt = 1,3-di-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl] complex with bridging hydrides and (ii) an actinide-free Cp₂TiH₃AlCTMS₃ (Cp = cyclopentadienyl) analogue. Analyses of the hyperfine interactions between the paramagnetic trivalent metal centers and the surrounding magnetic nuclei, ¹H and ²⁷Al, yield spin distributions over both complexes. These results show that while the bridging hydrides in the two complexes have similar hyperfine couplings (a_iso = −9.7 and −10.7 MHz, respectively), the spin density on the Al ion in the Th³⁺ complex is ∼5-fold larger than that in the titanium(3+) (Ti³⁺) analogue. This suggests a direct orbital overlap between Th and Al, leading to a covalent interaction between Th and Al. Our quantitative investigation by a pulse EPR technique deepens our understanding of actinide bonding to main-group elements.

The electronic structures of Ti³⁺−Al and Th³⁺−Al heterobimetallic complexes are probed by electron−nuclear double resonance spectroscopy, revealing a much larger spin density on the Al center in the latter and the presence of a covalent Th−Al bonding interaction caused by the direct orbital overlap between Th and Al.

Synthesis and Reduction of Bimetallic Methyl-Bridged Rare-Earth Metal Complexes, [(C5H4SiMe3)2Ln(μ-CH3)]2 (Ln = Y, Tb, Dy)

The complexes [Cp'₂Ln(μ-CH₃)]₂, (Cp' = C₅H₄SiMe₃; Ln = Y, Tb, Dy) were reduced to determine if these methyl-bridged complexes would form mixed valent 4f ⁿ 5d¹ Ln(II)/4f ⁿ Ln(III) compounds or bimetallic 4f ⁿ 5d¹ Ln(II) compounds containing 5d¹-5d¹ metal-metal bonds upon reduction. Reaction of the known bridged-chloride complexes, [Cp'₂Ln(μ-Cl)]₂, 1-Ln (Ln = Y, Tb, Dy), with MeLi forms the bridged-methyl complexes [Cp'₂Ln(μ-CH₃)]₂, 2-Ln, which were crystallographically characterized for Tb and Dy. KC₈ reduction of 2-Ln in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand produced 3-Y, 3-Tb, and 3-Dy, which exhibited intense dark colors and broad absorbance peaks around 400 nm with molar extinction coefficients of 1700, 2300, and 1800 M^-1 cm^-1, respectively, which are characteristics of Ln(II) ions. The dark maroon 3-Y product had an axial electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum at 77 K (g ₁ = 1.99, A ₁ = 17.9 G; g ₂ = 2.00, A ₂ = 17.7 G) and a two-line isotropic spectrum at 273 K (g = 1.99, A = 18.4 G), which indicates that an Y(II) ion is present. Although these results are indicative of Ln(II) ions present in the solution, crystallographic evidence was not obtained to establish the structure of these complexes.

Preparation of a potassium chloride bridged thorium phosphinidiide complex and its reactivity towards small organic molecules

Monomeric thorium dihydrido complexes: versatile precursors to actinide metallacycles

The monomeric actinide dihydrido complex [(Cp^Ar*)(Cp*)ThH₂(THF)] (2) and actinide metallacyclopentyne [(Cp^Ar*)(Cp*)Th(PhCH–CC–CHPh)] (4) were obtained for the first time.

Catalytic regeneration of a Th-H bond from a Th-O bond through a mild and chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration

Here we present an unprecedented chemoselective hydroboration for aldehydes and ketones catalysed by actinides. The reaction features a very low catalyst loading (0.1-0.004 mol%) and quantitative product formation in less than 15 minutes, at room temperature. Thermodynamic and kinetic studies including stoichiometric and labeling studies with deuterated pinacolborane allow us to propose a plausible mechanism for this remarkable catalytic regeneration of a Th-H bond via carbonyl hydroboration.

Chemical structure and bonding in a thorium(iii)-aluminum heterobimetallic complex

We describe the syntheses of [Th(iii)]–[Al] and [U(iii)]–[Al] bimetallics that demonstrate An→Al interactions where the actinide behaves as an electron donor.

Thorium sits at a unique position on the periodic table. On one hand, there is little evidence that its 5f orbitals engage in bonding as they do in other early actinides; on the other hand, its chemistry is distinct from Lewis acidic transition metals. To gain insight into the underlying electronic structure of Th and develop trends across the actinide series, it is useful to study Th(iii) and Th(ii) systems with valence electrons that may engage in non-electrostatic metal–ligand interactions, although only a handful of such systems are known. To expand the range of low-valent compounds and gain deeper insight into Th electronic structure, we targeted actinide bimetallic complexes containing metal–metal bonds. Herein, we report the syntheses of Th–Al bimetallics from reactions between a di-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl supported Th(iv) dihalide (Cp^‡₂ThCl₂) and an anionic aluminum hydride salt [K(H₃AlC(SiMe₃)₃) (1)]. Reduction of the [Th(iv)](Cl)–[Al] product resulted in a [Th(iii)]–[Al] complex [Cp^‡₂Th(μ-H₃)AlC(SiMe₃)₃ (4)]. The U(iii) analogue [Cp^‡₂U(μ-H₃)AlC(SiMe₃)₃ (5)] could be synthesized directly from a U(iii) halide starting material. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies on 4 demonstrate hyperfine interactions between the unpaired electron and the Al atom indicative of spin density delocalization from the Th metal center to the Al. Density functional theory and atom in molecules calculations confirmed the presence of An→Al interactions in 4 and 5, which represents the first examples of An→M interactions where the actinide behaves as an electron donor.

New vistas in the molecular chemistry of thorium: low oxidation state complexes

Although the molecular chemistry of thorium is dominated by the +4 oxidation state accounts of Th(iii) complexes have continued to increase in frequency since the first structurally characterised example was reported thirty years ago. The isolation of the first Th(ii) complexes in 2015 and exciting recent Th(iii) and Th(ii) reactivity studies both indicate that this long-neglected area is set to undergo a rapid expansion in research activity over the next decade, as previously seen since the turn of the millennium for analogous U(iii) small molecule activation chemistry. In this perspective article, we review synthetic routes to Th(iii) and Th(ii) complexes and summarise their distinctive physical properties. We provide a near-chronological discussion of these systems, focusing on structurally characterised examples, and cover complementary theoretical studies that rationalise electronic structures. All reactivity studies of Th(iii) and Th(ii) complexes that have been reported to date are described in detail.
