Abstract
This paper presents a simple and cost-effective hydrogenation method for synthesizing a myriad of cycloalkanes and saturated heterocycles bearing boryl or silyl substituents. The catalyst used are heterogeneous, readily available, bench stable, and recyclable. Also demonstrated is the application of the method to compounds that possess both boryl and silyl groups. When combined with Ir-catalyzed sp2 C-H borylation, such hydrogenations offer a two-step complementary alternative to direct sp3 C-H borylations that can suffer selectivity and reactivity issues. Of practical value to the community, complete stereochemical analyses of reported borylated compounds that were never fully characterized are reported herein.

Abstract
The catalytic, undirected borylation of alkyl C-H bonds typically occurs at high reaction temperatures or with excess substrate, or both, because of the low reactivity of alkyl C-H bonds. Here we report a new iridium system comprising 2-anilino-1,10-phenanthroline as the ligand that catalyzes the borylation of alkyl C-H bonds with little to no induction period and with high reaction rates. This superior activation and reactivity profile of 2-aminophenanthroline-ligated catalysts leads to broader reaction scope, including reactions of sensitive substrates, such as epoxides and glycosidic acetals, enhanced diastereoselectivity, and higher yields of borylated products. These catalysts also enable the borylation of alkanes, amines, and ethers at room temperature for the first time. Mechanistic studies imply that facile N-borylation occurs under the reaction conditions and that iridium complexes containing N-boryl aminophenanthrolines are competent precatalysts for the reaction.

Abstract
General methods for the preparation of geminal bis(boronates) are of great interest due to their widespread applications in organic synthesis. While the terminal gem-diboron compounds are readily accessible, the construction of the sterically encumbered, internal analogues has remained a prominent challenge. Herein, we report a formal umpolung strategy to access these valuable building blocks. The readily available 1,1-diborylalkanes were first converted into the corresponding α-halogenated derivatives, which then serve as electrophilic components, undergoing a formal substitution with a diverse array of nucleophiles to form a series of C-C, C-O, C-S, and C-N bonds. This protocol features good tolerance to steric hindrance and a wide variety of functional groups and heterocycles. Notably, this strategy can also be extended to the synthesis of diaryl and terminal gem-diboron compounds, therefore providing a general approach to various types of geminal bis(boronates).

Abstract
The borylation of unreactive carbon-hydrogen bonds is a valuable method for transforming feedstock chemicals into versatile building blocks. Here, we describe a transition metal-free method for the photoredox-catalyzed borylation of unactivated C(sp3)-H bond, initiated by 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). The remote borylation was directed by 1,5-HAT of the amidyl radical, which was generated by photocatalytic reduction of hydroxamic acid derivatives. The method accommodates substrates with primary, secondary and tertiary C(sp3)-H bonds, yielding moderate to good product yields (up to 92%) with tolerance for various functional groups. Mechanistic studies, including radical clock experiments and DFT calculations, provided detailed insight into the 1,5-HAT borylation process.

Abstract
During the past decades, in synthetic organic chemistry, directing-group-assisted C-H functionalization is found to be a key tool for the expedient and site-selective construction of C-C and hybrid bonds. Among C-H functionalization of ferrocene derivatives, the directed group strategy is undoubtedly the most commonly used method. Compared to the other directing groups, ferrocene amides can be synthesized easily and are now recognized as one of the most efficient devices for the selective functionalization of certain positions because its metal centre permits fine, tuneable and reversible coordination. The family of amide directing groups mainly comprises monodentate and bidentate directing groups, which are categorized on the basis of coordination sites. In this review, various C-H bond functionalization reactions of ferrocene using amide directing groups are broadly discussed.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalysed direct borylation of hydrocarbons via C-H bond activation has received a remarkable level of attention as a popular reaction in the synthesis of organoboron compounds owing to their synthetic versatility. While controlling the site-selectivity was one of the most challenging issues in these C-H borylation reactions, enormous efforts of several research groups proved instrumental in dealing with selectivity issues that presently reached an impressive level for both proximal and distal C-H bond borylation reactions. For example, in the case of ortho C-H bond borylation reactions, innovative methodologies have been developed either by the modification of the directing groups attached with the substrates or by creating new catalytic systems via the design of new ligand frameworks. Whereas meta and para selective C-H borylations remained a formidable challenge, numerous innovative concepts have been developed within a very short period of time by the development of new catalytic systems with the employment of various noncovalent interactions. Moreover, significant advancements have occurred for aliphatic C(sp3)-H borylations as well as enantioselective borylations. In this review article, we aim to discuss and summarize the different approaches and findings related to the development of directed proximal ortho, distal meta/para, aliphatic (racemic and enantioselective) borylation reactions since 2014. Additionally, considering the C-H borylation reaction as one of the most important mainstream reactions, various applications of this C-H borylation reaction toward the synthesis of natural products, therapeutics, and applications in materials chemistry will be summarized in the last part of this review article.

Abstract
A bidentate monoanionic ligand system was developed to enable iridium catalyzed C(sp3)-H activation borylation of N-methyl amides. Borylated amides were obtained in moderate to good isolated yields, and exclusive mono-borylation allowed the amide to be the limiting reagent. Selectivity for C(sp3)-H activation was demonstrated in the presence of sterically available C(sp3)-H bonds. Competitive kinetic isotope studies revealed a large primary isotope effect, implicating C-H activation as the rate limiting step.

Abstract
Metal‐catalyzed C−H activations are environmentally and economically attractive synthetic strategies for the construction of functional molecules as they obviate the need for pre‐functionalized substrates and minimize waste generation. Great challenges reside in the control of selectivities, the utilization of unbiased hydrocarbons, and the operation of atom‐economical dehydrocoupling mechanisms. An especially mild borylation of benzylic CH bonds was developed with the ligand‐free pre‐catalyst Co[N(SiMe3)2]2 and the bench‐stable and inexpensive borylation reagent B2pin2 that produces H2 as the only by‐product. A full set of kinetic, spectroscopic, and preparative mechanistic studies are indicative of a tandem catalysis mechanism of CH‐borylation and dehydrocoupling via molecular CoI catalysts.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed, coordination-assisted C(sp3)-H functionalization has revolutionized synthetic planning over the past few decades as the use of these directing groups has allowed for increased access to many strategic positions in organic molecules. Nonetheless, several challenges remain preeminent, such as the requirement for high temperatures, the difficulty in removing or converting directing groups, and, although many metals provide some reactivity, the difficulty in employing metals outside of palladium. This review aims to give a comprehensive overview of coordination-assisted, transition-metal-catalyzed, direct functionalization of nonactivated C(sp3)-H bonds by covering the literature since 2004 in order to demonstrate the current state-of-the-art methods as well as the current limitations. For clarity, this review has been divided into nine sections by the transition metal catalyst with subdivisions by the type of bond formation. Synthetic applications and reaction mechanism are discussed where appropriate.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, the C-H bond activation and functionalization reaction has been known as a prevailing method for the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds using various transition metal catalysts. In this context, the iridium-catalyzed C-H bond activation and borylation reaction is one of the most valued methods. However, the major challenge in these borylation reactions is how to control the proximal (ortho) and distal (meta and para) selectivity. Interestingly, while so many approaches are now available for the proximal ortho selective borylation of arenes, borylation at the distal meta and or para position of arenes remains still challenging. Only a few approaches have been reported so far in the literature employing iridium catalysis. In this feature article, we have demonstrated some of the recent discoveries from our laboratories for the proximal (ortho) and distal (meta and para) selective borylation reactions. Moreover, some of the recent catalyst engineering discoveries for the selective proximal ortho borylation reactions for a diverse class of substrates have also been discussed. The discussion part of several other pioneering reports is limited due to the lack of scope of this feature article.

Abstract
Here we describe the discovery of a new class of C-H borylation catalysts and their use for regioselective C-H borylation of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic systems. The new catalysts have Ir-C(thienyl) or Ir-C(furyl) anionic ligands instead of the diamine-type neutral chelating ligands used in the standard C-H borylation conditions. It is reported that the employment of these newly discovered catalysts show excellent reactivity and ortho-selectivity for diverse classes of aromatic substrates with high isolated yields. Moreover, the catalysts proved to be efficient for a wide number of aliphatic substrates for selective C(sp3)-H bond borylations. Heterocyclic molecules are selectively borylated using the inherently elevated reactivity of the C-H bonds. A number of late-stage C-H functionalization have been described using the same catalysts. Furthermore, we show that one of the catalysts could be used even in open air for the C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H borylations enabling the method more general. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the active catalytic intermediate is the Ir(bis)boryl complex, and the attached ligand acts as bidentate ligand. Collectively, this study underlines the discovery of new class of C-H borylation catalysts that should find wide application in the context of C-H functionalization chemistry.

Abstract
Directing group assistance provided a paradigm for controlling site-selectivity in transition metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions. However, the kinetically and thermodynamically favored formation of 5-membered metallacycles has greatly hampered the selective activation of remote C(sp3)-H bonds via larger-membered metallacycles. Recent development to achieve remote C(sp3)-H functionalization via the C-H metallation process largely relies on employing specific substrates without accessible proximal C-H bonds. Encouragingly, recent advances in this field have enabled the selective functionalization of remote aliphatic C-H bonds in the presence of equally accessible proximal ones by taking advantage of the switch of the regiodetermining step, ring strain of metallacycles, multiple non-covalent interactions, and favourable reductive elimination from larger-membered metallacycles. In this review, we summarize these advancements according to the strategies used, hoping to facilitate further efforts to achieve site- and even enantioselective functionalization of remote C(sp3)-H bonds.

Abstract
Boronic acids and their derivatives are some of the most useful reagents in the chemical sciences1, with applications spanning pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and functional materials. Catalytic C-H borylation is a powerful method for introducing these and other boron groups into organic molecules because it can be used to directly functionalize C-H bonds of feedstock chemicals without the need for substrate pre-activation1-3. These reactions have traditionally relied on precious-metal catalysts for C-H bond cleavage and, as a result, display high selectivity for borylation of aromatic C(sp2)-H bonds over aliphatic C(sp3)-H bonds4. Here we report a mechanistically distinct, metal-free borylation using hydrogen atom transfer catalysis5, in which homolytic cleavage of C(sp3)-H bonds produces alkyl radicals that are borylated by direct reaction with a diboron reagent. The reaction proceeds by violet-light photoinduced electron transfer between an N-alkoxyphthalimide-based oxidant and a chloride hydrogen atom transfer catalyst. Unusually, stronger methyl C-H bonds are borylated preferentially over weaker secondary, tertiary and even benzylic C-H bonds. Mechanistic studies indicate that the high methyl selectivity is a result of the formation of a chlorine radical-boron 'ate' complex that selectively cleaves sterically unhindered C-H bonds. By using a photoinduced hydrogen atom transfer strategy, this metal-free C(sp3)-H borylation enables unreactive alkanes to be transformed into valuable organoboron reagents under mild conditions and with selectivities that contrast with those of established metal-catalysed protocols.

Abstract
Borylated aryl alkynes have been synthesized via one-pot iridium catalyzed C-H borylation (CHB)/Sonogashira cross-coupling of aryl bromides. Direct borylation of aryl alkynes encountered problems related to the reactivity of the alkyne under CHB conditions. However, tolerance of aryl bromides to CHB made possible a subsequent Sonogashira cross-coupling to access the desired borylated aryl alkynes.

Abstract
An in-depth study of iridium catalysts for the borylation of alkyl C-H bonds is reported. Although the borylation of aryl C-H bonds can be catalyzed by iridium complexes containing phen or bpy ligands at mild temperatures and with limiting arene, the borylation of alkyl C-H bonds remains underdeveloped. We prepared a library of phenanthrolines that contain varying substitution patterns. The corresponding phen-Ir trisboryl carbon monoxide complexes were synthesized to determine the electron-donating ability of these ligands, and the initial rates for the borylation of the C-H bonds in THF and diethoxyethane β to oxygen catalyzed by Ir complexes containing these ligands were measured. For some subsets of these ligands, the donor ability correlated positively with the rate of C-H borylation catalyzed by the complexes containing ligands within a given subset. However, across subsets, ligands possessing similar donor properties to one another form catalysts for the borylation of alkyl C-H bonds with widely varying activity. This phenomenon was investigated computationally, and it was discovered that the stabilizing interactions between the phenanthroline ligand and the boryl ligands attached to Ir in the transition state for C-H oxidative addition could account for the differences in the activity of the catalysts that possess similar electron densities at Ir. The effect of these interactions on the borylation of secondary alkyl C-H bonds is larger than it is on the borylation of primary alkyl C-H bonds.

Abstract
A computational mechanistic study has been performed on Pd(II)-catalyzed enantioselective reactions involving acetyl-protected aminomethyl oxazolines (APAO) ligands that significantly improved reactivity and selectivity in C(sp3)-H borylation. The results support a mechanism including initiation of C(sp3)-H bond activation generating a five-membered palladacycle and ligand exchange, followed by HPO42--promoted transmetalation. These resulting Pd(II) complexes further undergo sequential reductive elimination by coordination of APAO ligands and protonation to afford the enantiomeric products and deliver Pd(0) complexes, which will then proceed by oxidation and deprotonation to regenerate the catalyst. The C(sp3)-H activation is found to be the rate- and enantioselectivity-determining step, in which the APAO ligand acts as the proton acceptor to form the two enantioselectivity models. The results demonstrate that the diverse APAO ligands control the enantioselectivity by differentiating the distortion and interaction between the major and minor pathways.

Abstract
Pyrazolylaniline serves as a temporary directing group attached to the boron atom of alkylboronic acids in Ir-catalyzed C(sp3)-H borylation. The reaction takes place at α-, β-, and γ-C-H bonds, giving polyborylated products including di-, tri-, tetra-, and even pentaborylalkanes. α-C-H borylation was generally found to be the preferred reaction of primary alkylboronic acid derivatives, whereas β- or γ-borylation also occurred if β- or γ-C-H bonds were located on the methyl group.

Abstract
We herein report the hydrogenation of substituted aryl- and heteroaryl boronate esters for the selective synthesis of cis-substituted borylated cycloalkanes and saturated heterocycles. A cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene-ligated rhodium complex with two dimethyl groups at the ortho-alkyl scaffold of the carbene showed high reactivity in promoting the hydrogenation, thereby enabling the hydrogenation of (hetero)arenes with retention of the synthetically valuable boronate group. This process constitutes a clean, atom-economic, as well as chemo- and stereoselective route for the generation of cis-configured, diversely substituted borylated cycloalkanes and saturated heterocycles that are usually elusive and difficult to prepare.

Abstract
A method for direct cross coupling between unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds and chloroformates has been accomplished via nickel and photoredox catalysis. A diverse range of feedstock chemicals, such as (a)cyclic alkanes and toluenes, along with late-stage intermediates, undergo intermolecular C-C bond formation to afford esters under mild conditions using only 3 equiv of the C-H partner. Site selectivity is predictable according to bond strength and polarity trends that are consistent with the intermediacy of a chlorine radical as the hydrogen atom-abstracting species.

Abstract
The present review is devoted to summarizing the recent advances (2015-2017) in the field of metal-catalysed group-directed C-H functionalisation. In order to clearly showcase the molecular diversity that can now be accessed by means of directed C-H functionalisation, the whole is organized following the directing groups installed on a substrate. Its aim is to be a comprehensive reference work, where a specific directing group can be easily found, together with the transformations which have been carried out with it. Hence, the primary format of this review is schemes accompanied with a concise explanatory text, in which the directing groups are ordered in sections according to their chemical structure. The schemes feature typical substrates used, the products obtained as well as the required reaction conditions. Importantly, each example is commented on with respect to the most important positive features and drawbacks, on aspects such as selectivity, substrate scope, reaction conditions, directing group removal, and greenness. The targeted readership are both experts in the field of C-H functionalisation chemistry (to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress made in the last years) and, even more so, all organic chemists who want to introduce the C-H functionalisation way of thinking for a design of straightforward, efficient and step-economic synthetic routes towards molecules of interest to them. Accordingly, this review should be of particular interest also for scientists from industrial R&D sector. Hence, the overall goal of this review is to promote the application of C-H functionalisation reactions outside the research groups dedicated to method development and establishing it as a valuable reaction archetype in contemporary R&D, comparable to the role cross-coupling reactions play to date.

Abstract
peri-Disubstituted naphthalenes exhibit interesting physical properties and unique chemical reactivity, due to the parallel arrangement of the bonds to the two peri-disposed substituents. Regioselective installation of a functional group at the position peri to 1-substituted naphthalenes is challenging due to the steric interaction between the existing substituent and the position at which the second one would be installed. We report an iridium-catalyzed borylation of the C-H bond peri to a silyl group in naphthalenes and analogous polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The reaction occurs under mild conditions with wide functional group tolerance. The silyl group and the boryl group in the resulting products are precursors to a range of functional groups bound to the naphthalene ring through C-C, C-O, C-N, C-Br and C-Cl bonds.

Abstract
Direct aerobic α,β-dehydrogenation of γ,δ-unsaturated amides and acids using a simple iridium/copper relay catalysis system is described. We developed a new strategy that overcomes the challenging issue associated with the low α-acidity of amides and acids. Instead of α-C-H metalation, this reaction proceeds by β-C-H activation, which results in enhanced α-acidity. Conjugated dienamides and dienoic acids were synthesized in excellent yield with this reaction, which uses a simple reaction protocol. Mechanistic experiments suggest a catalyst resting state mechanism in which both α-C-H and β-C-H cleavage is accelerated.

Abstract
The functionalization of C(sp3 )-H bonds streamlines chemical synthesis by allowing the use of simple molecules and providing novel synthetic disconnections. Intensive recent efforts in the development of new reactions based on C-H functionalization have led to its wider adoption across a range of research areas. This Review discusses the strengths and weaknesses of three main approaches: transition-metal-catalyzed C-H activation, 1,n-hydrogen atom transfer, and transition-metal-catalyzed carbene/nitrene transfer, for the directed functionalization of unactivated C(sp3 )-H bonds. For each strategy, the scope, the reactivity of different C-H bonds, the position of the reacting C-H bonds relative to the directing group, and stereochemical outcomes are illustrated with examples in the literature. The aim of this Review is to provide guidance for the use of C-H functionalization reactions and inspire future research in this area.

Abstract
DFT calculation indicates that in iridium catalyzed C–H borylation of aromatics, the ortho selectivity is proposed to be attributed to the electron donating effect of AQ ligand, while the meta selectivity is due to steric hindrance of TMP ligand.
