Host–Guest Chirality Interplay: A Mutually Induced Formation of a Chiral ZMOF and Its Double-Helix Polymer Guests

Light-Up Fluorescence and Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Achiral Interlocked Framework via Adaptive Lone Pair-π Interaction Confinement

Interactions between lone pairs and aromatic π systems are significant across biology and self-assembled materials. Herein, employing an achiral confinement metal-organic framework (MOF) encapsulates guest molecules, it is successfully realized that lone pair (lp)-π interaction induces fluorescence "turn-on" and circularly polarized luminescence for the first time. The MOFs synthesized based on naphthalenediimide show nearly non-emissive, which can be light-up by introducing acetone or ester guests containing lone pairs-π interaction. Furthermore, the introduction of a series of lp-rich chiral esters induces supramolecular chirality as well as circularly polarized luminescence in achiral MOFs, while also observing chiral adaptability. This work first demonstrates the luminescence and chiral induction via lone pair electrons-π interactions, presenting a fresh paradigm for the advancement of chiroptical materials.

Pentazolate Anion: A Rare and Preferred Five-Membered Ligand for Constructing Pentasil-Zeolite Topology Architectures

As the fourth full-nitrogen structure, the pentazolate anion (cyclo-N5 - ) was highly coveted for decades. In 2017, the first air-stable non-metal pentazolate salt, (N5 )6 (H3 O)3 (NH4 )4 Cl, was obtained, representing a milestone in this field. As the latest member of the azole family, cyclo-N5 - is comprised of five nitrogen atoms. Although significant attention has been paid to the potential of cyclo-N5 - as an energetic material, its poor thermostability hinders any practical application. However, the unique ring structure and multiple coordination capability of cyclo-N5 - provide a platform for the fabrication of various structures, among which pentasil-zeolite topologies are the most intriguing. In addition, the introduction of structure-directing auxiliaries enables the self-assembly of diverse topological architectures, potentially imparting cyclo-N5 - with the potential to impact wide-ranging areas of coordination chemistry and topology. In this minireview, different pentasil-zeolite topologies based on metal-pentazolate frameworks are evaluated. To date, three zeolitic and zeolite-like topologies have been reported, namely the melanophlogite (MEP), chibaite (MTN), and unj topologies. The MEP topology consists of two nanocages, Na20 N60 and Na24 N60 , whereas the MTN topology contains Na20 N60 and Na28 N80 nanocages. Furthermore, the unj topology features multiple homochiral channels consisting of two helical chains. Various possible strategies for obtaining additional pentasil-zeolite topologies are also discussed.

A Metal-Free Helical Covalent Inorganic Polymer: Preparation, Crystal Structure and Optical Properties

Helical morphologies are widely observed in nature, however, it is very challenging to prepare artificial helical polymers. Especially, precisely understanding the structure information of artificial metal-free helical covalent inorganic polymers via single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis is rarely explored. Here, we successfully prepare a novel metal-free helical covalent inorganic polymer ({[Te(C6 H5 )2 ] [PO3 (OH)]}n , named CityU-10) by introducing angular anions (HOPO3 2- ) into traditional tellurium-oxygen chains. The dynamic reversibility of the reaction is realized through the introduction of organic tellurium precursor and the slow hydrolysis of polyphosphoric acid. High-quality and large-size single crystals of CityU-10 have been successfully characterized via SCXRD, where the same-handed helical inorganic polymer chains form a pseudo-two-dimensional layer via multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions. The left-handed layers and right-handed layers alternatively stack together through weak hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. The single crystals of CityU-10 are found to display promising optical properties with a large birefringence. Our results would offer new guidelines for designing and preparing new crystalline covalent polymers through tellurium-based chemistry.

Polynuclear Rare-Earth Cluster-Directed Self-Assembly of Highly Porous Zeolite-like Metal-Organic Frameworks with Methane Storage Property

Due to their intrinsic structural features, the design and synthesis of a new type of zeolite-like metal-organic frameworks (ZMOFs) is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, solvothermal reactions between an angular dicarboxylate linker and rare-earth (RE) ions afforded two RE-MOFs, namely, Tb-ZMOF-2 and Tb-ZMOF-3, respectively. Structural analyses reveal that Tb-ZMOF-2 encompasses a novel [446482] cage, while Tb-ZMOF-3 contains nonanuclear (i.e., D6R) and hexanuclear (i.e., D4R) RE clusters simultaneously, subsequently resulting in two new zeolitic topologies. Thanks to its high surface area and pore volume, Tb-ZMOF-2 demonstrates considerably high gravimetric and volumetric methane storage working capacities.

Physicochemical properties and density functional theory calculation of octahedral UiO-66 with Bis(Trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ionic liquids

In this study, the physicochemical properties and molecular interactions between zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66) and three different ionic liquids based on bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion (EMIM+, BMIM+ and OMIM+) was performed via a combined experimental and computational approach. The ionic liquid loaded UiO-66 or IL@UiO-66 was synthesized and characterized to understand the host-guest interaction. Density functional theory calculation was performed to analyse the electronic structure of IL@UiO-66 to provide molecular insight on the dominant interactions occurred in the hybrid material. Results showed that all ILs were successfully incorporated into the micropores of UiO-66. The 3D framework was retained even after loaded with ILs as analyzed from XRD pattern. FTIR spectrum reveals that interactions of ILs with UiO-66 influenced by the alkyl chain length of the cation. The anion has a profound affinity with the UiO-66 due to the presence of electronegative atoms. Phase transition study from DSC suggested that the incorporation of ILs has stabilized the framework of UiO-66 by shifting the endothermic peak to a higher state. These findings were further elaborated with DFT calculation. Geometrical optimizations confirmed the structural parameter changes of UiO-66 when loaded with ILs. These was mainly contributed by the non-covalent interactions which was confirmed by the reduced density gradient scattered plot. Another important findings are the strength of hydrogen bonding at the host-guest interface was influenced by the alkyl chain length. The molecular orbital analysis also shows that the size of alkyl chain influence the reactivity of the hybrid material. The present study provides fundamental insights on the molecular interaction of UiO-66 and ILs as a hybrid material, which can open new possibilities for advanced material for metal-organic framework applications in energy storage system, catalysis, gas storage and medicinal chemistry.

Magnetically driven nanorobots based on peptides nanodots with tunable photoluminescence for rapid scavenging reactive α-dicarbonyl species and effective blocking of advanced glycation end products

The present work constructed magnetically driven nanorobots by conjugating the photoluminescent β-alanine-histidine (β-AH) nanodots to superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPNPs) for simultaneously sensitive determination and fast trapping RDS in food processing, achieving efficient regulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) risk. Bio-derivative β-AH nanodots with orderly self-assembly nanostructure and tunable photoluminescent properties served as both biorecognition elements to effectively bind and scavenge the reactive α-dicarbonyl species (RDS), as well as the indicator with sensitive fluorescence response in the food matrix. The magnetically driven nanorobots with excellent biosafety of endogenous dipeptides displayed a high binding capacity of 80.12 mg g^-1 with ultrafast equilibrium time. Furthermore, the magnetically driven nanorobots achieved rapid removal of the RDS with the manipulation of the external magnetic field, which enabled intercepting AGEs generation without byproducts residual as well as ease-of-operation. This work provided a promising strategy with biosafety and versatility for both accurate determination and efficient removal of hazards.

Rational regulation of acetylene adsorption and separation for ultra-microporous copper-1,2,4-triazolate frameworks by halogen hydrogen bonds

It is well known that the introduction of exposed fluorine (F) sites into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can effectively promote acetylene (C₂H₂) adsorption via C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. However, such super strong hydrogen bonding interactions usually lead to very high acetylene adsorption enthalpy and thus require more energy during the adsorbent regeneration process. As the same group elements, chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) and iodine (I) also can act as hydrogen bond acceptors but with relatively weak forces. So, it is speculated that the decoration of Cl, Br or I sites on the pore surface of MOF adsorbents may enhance acetylene adsorption but with lower energy consumption. Herein, ultra-microporous MOFs constructed by Cu₄X₄ (X = Cl, Br, I) motifs and 1,2,4-triazolate linkers, namely, [Cu₈X₄(TRZ)₄]_n (TRZ = 3,5-diethyl-1,2,4-triazole or detrz for SNNU-313-X, and 3,5-dipropyl-1,2,4-triazole or dptrz for SNNU-314-X), provide an ideal platform to investigate the effect of C-H⋯X (X = Cl, Br, I) hydrogen bonding on C₂H₂ adsorption and purification performance. Benefiting from the small pore size and pore environment, the C₂H₂ uptake and separation properties of this series of MOFs are systematically regulated. Detailed gas adsorption results show that with the same organic linker, the C₂H₂ uptake and separation (C₂H₂/C₂H₄ and C₂H₂/CO₂) performance decrease clearly with the electronegativity of halogen ions (SNNU-313-Cl > SNNU-313-Br > SNNU-313-I). With the same halogen ion, the gas adsorption decreases with the bulk of decorated alkyl groups (SNNU-313-Cl > SNNU-314-Cl). Remarkably, SNNU-313/314 series MOF adsorbents exhibit moderate C₂H₂ uptake capacity and high separation ability, but the C₂H₂ adsorption enthalpies are much lower than those of MOF materials with exposed F sites. Dynamic fixed-bed column breakthrough experiments and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations further indicate the critical effects of halogen hydrogen bonds on acetylene adsorption and separation. Overall, this work demonstrated an effective regulation of acetylene adsorption and separation by rational C-H⋯X hydrogen bonding, which may provide a new route for the exploration of energy-efficient acetylene adsorbent materials.

A review on chiral metal-organic frameworks: synthesis and asymmetric applications

Chiral metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs) have the characteristics of framework structure diversity and functional tunability, and have important applications in the fields of chiral identification, separation of enantiomers and asymmetric catalysis. In recent years, the application of CMOFs has also been extended to other research fields, such as circularly polarized fluorescence and chiral ferroelectrics. Compared with achiral MOFs, the design of CMOFs only considers the modes of introduction of chirality, and also takes into account the crystallization and purification. Therefore, the synthesis and characterization of CMOFs face many difficult challenges. This review discusses three effective strategies for constructing CMOFs, including direct synthesis of chiral ligands, spontaneous resolution of achiral ligands or chiral template-induced synthesis, and post-synthetic chiralization of achiral MOFs. In addition, this review also discusses the recent application progress of CMOFs in chiral molecular recognition, enantiomer separation, asymmetric catalysis, circularly polarized fluorescence, and chiral ferroelectrics.

Silver-Rich Hybrid Framework Iodide Based on [Ag8I6]2+ Clusters Displays Low-Temperature Dual Emission and Luminescence Thermochromism

Cluster-based framework metal iodides have diverse structures and excellent luminescence properties, and show promising applications in sensing and solid-state lighting. However, the design and synthesis of these materials remain great challenges because excess I^- ions introduced into the synthesis systems decrease the condensation degree of M-I units. In this work, a new strategy is developed to control the condensation behavior of Ag-I units, and a new silver-rich cluster-based framework iodide [DabcoAg₈I₆(SPh)₂]_n (1) (Dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane) has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions in the presence of silver thiophenolate (AgSPh)_n. Compound 1 features a three-dimensional (3-D) cluster-based framework with a pillared layer structure composed of cationic [Ag₈I₆]²⁺ clusters bridged by SPh^- and Dabco, and displays low-temperature dual emission and luminescence thermochromism.

Designable assembly of atomically precise Al4O4 cubane supported mesoporous heterometallic architectures

Heterometallic cluster-based framework materials are of interest in terms of both their porous structures and multi-metallic reactivity. However, such materials have not yet been extensively investigated because of difficulties in their synthesis and structural characterization. Herein, we reported the designable synthesis of atomically precise heterometallic cluster-based framework compounds and their application as catalysts in aldol reactions. By using the synergistic coordination protocol, we successfully isolated a broad range of compounds with the general formula, [Al₄M₄O₄(L)₁₂(DABCO)₂] (L = carboxylates; DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]-octane; M²⁺ = Co²⁺, Mn²⁺, Zn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Cd²⁺). The basic heterometallic building blocks contain unprecedented main-group γ-alumina moieties and surrounding unsaturated transition metal centers. Interestingly, the porosity and interpenetration of these frameworks can be rationally regulated through the unprecedented strategy of increment of the metal radius in addition to general introduction of sterically bulky groups on the ligand. Furthermore, these porous materials are effective catalysts for aldol reactions. This work provides a catalytic molecular model platform with accurate molecular bonding between the supporters and catalytically active metal ions.

Induction of Chirality in Boron Imidazolate Frameworks: The Structure-Directing Effects of Substituents

By enhancing steric hindrance of substituents on the imidazole ring, the fan-shaped molecule of a tridentate boron imidazolate ligand (KBH(2-ipim)₃, 2-ipim = 2-isopropylimidazolate) with racemic chirality was obtained. Then, seven novel boron imidazolate frameworks (BIFs) were prepared by mixing KBH(2-ipim)₃ ligands with various derivatives of benzene carboxylic acid under solvothermal conditions. All of these seven materials contain a ladder-like zinc-boron-imidazolate chain as a basic building block, and the ligand BH(2-ipim)₃^- exists in the same handedness in one chain. The structural variations are associated with the position of substituents of the auxiliary ligand. Of particular interest is the spontaneous resolution of BH(2-ipim)₃^- ligands into two independent enantiomorphous homochiral structures, BIF-131-S and BIF-131-R, which contain both a chiral chain and an absolute helix embedded in the nets.

Highly Efficient I2 Sorption, CO2 Capture, and Catalytic Conversion by Introducing Nitrogen Donor Sites in a Microporous Co(II)-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Recently, the development of porous absorbents for efficient CO₂ and I₂ capture has attracted considerable attention because of severe global climate change and environmental issues with the nuclear energy. Hence, a unique porous metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Co(L)]·DMF·2H₂O}_n (1, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) with uncoordinated N atoms was rationally constructed via using a heterofunctional 4,6-bis(4'-carboxyphenyl)pyrimidine (H₂L) linker. Interestingly, 1 exhibits exceptional properties for I₂ sorption, CO₂ capture, and catalytic conversion. Particularly, I₂ can be efficiently removed in both vapor and solution forms, and the adsorption amount can reach 676.25 and 345.28 mg g^-1, respectively. Furthermore, complex 1 displays high adsorption capacity for CO₂ (53.78 cm³ g^-1, 273 K). Consequently, 1 is expected to be a promising and practical material for environmental purification due to its excellent adsorption properties.

Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks

In the past two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or porous coordination polymers (PCPs) assembled from metal ions or clusters and organic linkers via metal-ligand coordination bonds have captivated significant scientific interest on account of their high crystallinity, exceptional porosity, and tunable pore size, high modularity, and diverse functionality. The opportunity to achieve functional porous materials by design with promising properties, unattainable for solid-state materials in general, distinguishes MOFs from other classes of materials, in particular, traditional porous materials such as activated carbon, silica, and zeolites, thereby leading to complementary properties. Scientists have conducted intense research in the production of chiral MOF (CMOF) materials for specific applications including but not limited to chiral recognition, separation, and catalysis since the discovery of the first functional CMOF (i.e., d- or l-POST-1). At present, CMOFs have become interdisciplinary between chirality chemistry, coordination chemistry, and material chemistry, which involve in many subjects including chemistry, physics, optics, medicine, pharmacology, biology, crystal engineering, environmental science, etc. In this review, we will systematically summarize the recent progress of CMOFs regarding design strategies, synthetic approaches, and cutting-edge applications. In particular, we will highlight the successful implementation of CMOFs in asymmetric catalysis, enantioselective separation, enantioselective recognition, and sensing. We envision that this review will provide readers a good understanding of CMOF chemistry and, more importantly, facilitate research endeavors for the rational design of multifunctional CMOFs and their industrial implementation.

X⋅⋅⋅X Halogen Bond-Induced Supramolecular Helices

The halogen bond is the attractive interaction between the electrophilic region of a halogen atom and the nucleophilic region of another molecular entity, emerging as a favorable manner to manipulate supramolecular chirality in self-assemblies. Engineering halogen bonded helical structures remains a challenge due to its sensitivity to solvent polarity and competitive forces like hydrogen bonds. Herein, we report a X⋅⋅⋅X (X=Cl, Br, I) type weak halogen bond that induces the formation and evolution of supramolecular helical structures both in solid and solution state. The π-conjugated phenylalanine derivatives with F, Cl, Br and I substitution self-assembled into 2₁ helical packing driven by hydrogen bond and halogen bond, respectively. The specific molecular geometries of π-conjugated amino acids gave rise to multiple noncovalent forces to stabilize the X⋅⋅⋅X halogen bond with small bond energies ranging from -0.69 to -1.49 kcal mol^-1 . Halogen bond induced an opposite helicity compared to the fluorinated species, accompanied by the inversed circularly polarized luminescence.

Luminescent cluster-organic frameworks constructed from predesigned supertetrahedral {Ln4Zn6} secondary building units

3d-4f heterometallic supertetrahedral clusters with the formula of Ln₄Zn₆(μ₆-O)L₄(CH₃COO)₆(NO₃)₄(CH₃OH)₄(H₂O)₂ (1-Ln, Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, H₃L = 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3-propanediol) have been successfully introduced as stable secondary building units (SBUs) to construct new cluster-organic frameworks with tunable emission, demonstrating a promising strategy for developing new optical materials.

Structural Analysis and Controllable Fabrication of Two Pentazolate-Based 3D Topological Networks

Two novel sodium-pentazolate frameworks (namely, MPF-3 and MPF-4) were achieved by adding simple additives. MPF-3 exhibits an aesthetic three-dimensional (3D) framework with the zeolitic MTN topology, featuring Na₂₈N₈₀ and Na₂₀N₆₀ nanocages. In MPF-4, two left-handed helical chains construct enclosed homochiral channels filled with dimethyl sulfone molecules, which constitute a zeolite-like UNJ topology. Importantly, the preparation of these two compounds provides an effective experimental means to explore the unique symmetrical structure and multiple coordination modes of pentazolium anion and demonstrates that it is possible to regulate the crystal structure through appropriate additives.

Recent advances in porous nanostructures for cancer theranostics

Porous nanomaterials with high surface area, tunable porosity, and large mesopores have recently received particular attention in cancer therapy and imaging. Introduction of additional pores to nanostructures not only endows the tunability of optoelectronic and optical features optimal for tumor treatment, but also modulates the loading capacity and controlled release of therapeutic agents. In recognition, increasing efforts have been made to fabricate various porous nanomaterials and explore their potentials in oncology applications. Thus, a systematic and comprehensive summary is necessary to overview the recent progress, especially in last ten years, on the development of various mesoporous nanomaterials for cancer treatment as theranostic agents. While outlining their individual synthetic mechanisms after a brief introduction of the structures and properties of porous nanomaterials, the current review highlighted the representative applications of three main categories of porous nanostructures (organic, inorganic, and organic-inorganic nanomaterials). In each category, the synthesis, representative examples, and interactions with tumors were further detailed. The review was concluded with deliberations on the key challenges and future outlooks of porous nanostructures in cancer theranostics.

Chiral induction in boron imidazolate frameworks: the construction of cage-based absolute helices

Two cage-based boron imidazolate helices were prepared in achiral reaction systems by mixing a C3 symmetric rigid ligand, KBH(bim)3, and a long flexible dicarboxylic acid ligand. The presence of an appropriate chiral inducer can control the helical orientation of bulk samples, which further acts on the enantioselective separation of racemic 1-phenylethanol.

Homochiral metal-organic frameworks for enantioseparation

Obtaining homochiral compounds is of high importance to human health and environmental sustainability. Currently, enantioseparation is one of the most effective approaches to obtain homochiral compounds. Thanks to their controlled synthesis and high efficiency, homochiral metal-organic frameworks (HMOFs) are one of the most widely studied porous materials to enable enantioseparation. In this review, we discuss the chiral pocket model in depth as the key to unlock enantioselective separation mechanisms in HMOFs. In particular, we classify our discussion of these chiral pockets (also regarded as "molecular traps") into: (a) achiral/chiral linker based helical channels as a result of packing modality; and (b) chiral pores inherited from chiral ligands. Driven by a number of mechanisms of enantioseparation, conceptual advances have been recently made in the design of HMOFs for achieving high enantioseparation performances. Herein, these are systematically categorised and discussed. Further we elucidate various applications of HMOFs as regards enantioseparation, systematically classifying them into their use for purification and related analytical utility according to the reported examples. Last but not the least, we discuss the challenges and perspectives concerning the rational design of HMOFs and their corresponding enantioseparations.

Chiral porous organic frameworks and their application in enantioseparation

Porous organic frameworks (POFs) are a kind of porous material with a network structure composed of repeated monomers, which have excellent physical and chemical properties, such as a high surface area, high porosity, uniform pore sizes and structural diversity, and which have aroused broad interest among researchers. With the rapid development of materials science, increasingly more porous materials have been developed and applied, especially metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which have been widely applied in the fields of luminous materials, catalytic research, adsorption and drug transport. One of the most important applications for chiral porous materials is in chiral separation and these materials have become a research hotspot in the field of chromatographic separation and analysis in recent years. In this review, from the viewpoint of enantioseparation, the synthesis of chiral porous materials and their applications in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), capillary electrochromatography (CEC), and gas chromatography (GC) are reviewed. The typical applications of MOFs in solid-phase microextraction (SPME) are also discussed.

Recent progress and perspectives on the structural design on metal-organic zeolite (MOZ) frameworks

As a typical group of coordination polymers, metal-organic zeolite (MOZs) frameworks inherit the topological and structural advantages of inorganic zeolites and display great application potential in many areas, including gas adsorption/separation, catalysis, luminescence and chemical sensing. In this review, we outline the recent progress in the synthesis, functionalization and application of metal-organic zeolite frameworks, mainly focusing on the basic structural design principle and synthesis strategy on 4-connect inorganic nodes and 2-connect organic linkers. Employing different valent metals, small inorganic TO₄^2- units and high-nuclear clusters as 4-connect nodes, we derived multi-types of MOZs with a modified framework charge, improved stability and enhanced photo-/eletrocatalytic activity. Besides, the selection, functionalization and defect-engineering on the 2-connect ligands generated different topological and functional MOZs. Finally, the future trends and some perspectives in this area are outlined.

Recent progress in the design and synthesis of zeolite-like metal–organic frameworks (ZMOFs)

ZMOFs are a subset of MOFs that exhibit zeolite-like topologies. Using molecular building block strategy, many ZMOFs with high stability and excellent performance can be rationally designed and synthesized using different secondary building units.

Luminescent Thermochromic Silver Iodides as Wavelength-Dependent Thermometers

Luminescent thermochromic materials with a dramatic shift of emission band under different temperatures are highly desirable in temperature sensing fields. However, the design of the synthesis of such compounds remains a great challenge. In this work, two new luminescent thermochromic silver iodides, (emIm)Ag₃I₄ (1) and (emIm)Ag₂I₃ (2) (emIm = 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazole), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a [Ag₃I₄]^- anionic layer, while compound 2 possesses an infinite [Ag₂I₃]^- chain structure, both of which are charge balanced by emIm⁺ cations. Particularly, they display luminescent thermochromism with a significant wavelength shift of emission maximum with temperature change. They represent rare examples of infinite layered or chain silver iodides that show luminescent thermochromism. Furthermore, the results indicate that compounds 1 and 2 are promising wavelength-dependent luminescent thermometers.

Recent advances in fluorescence sensors based on DNA-MOF hybrids

In this review, the recent advances in the development of fluorescence sensors based on DNA and metal-organic framework hybrids have been reported for nucleic acid, metal ion and amino acid detection. The main detection mechanism depends on different adsorption capacities of MOFs towards different DNA structures (single-stranded DNA, double-stranded DNA), and consequently the fluorescence intensity of probe DNA is changed. These results might open up a way to study their potential application in material science and clinical diagnosis of some related diseases.

The synthesis of metal-organic frameworks with template strategies

The synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a template strategy is still fascinating and has received considerable attention from structural chemists. In this review, developments in tuning MOF hosts or pore structures with a template strategy in the past decades are summarized. By adding templates into MOF precursors, novel template@MOF materials can always be obtained, which cannot be accessed by traditional synthesis procedures. Template@MOF materials can be structurally characterized to help understand the interactions between host frameworks and guest templates. On the other hand, changing the species or amount of template may lead to a pore structure change that can be used as a molecular container to load functional guest molecules with matching sizes for specific applications. It is hoped that this review will provide future researchers with new insight into the design and synthesis of MOF materials by applying suitable templates.

Advances in capillary electro-chromatography

Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is a micro-scale separation technique which is a hybrid between capillary electrophoresis (CE) and liquid chromatography (LC). CEC can be performed in packed, monolithic and open-tubular columns. In recent three years (from 2016 to 2018), enormous attention for CEC has been the development of novel stationary phases. This review mainly covers the development of novel stationary phases for open-tubular and monolithic columns. In particular, some biomaterials attracted increasing interest. There are no significant breakthroughs in technology and principles in CEC. The typical CEC applications, especially chiral separations are described.

Supramolecular interactions induced distortion of BTB ligands: breaking convention to reproduce an unusual (3,4,4)-connected MOF topology

An unusual (3,4,4)-connected MOF topology has been reproduced by a 4,4',4''-benzene-1,3,5-triyl-tribenzoate (BTB) ligand which was previously judged to be not feasible to form this network. The outcome demonstrates that supramolecular interactions play a key role in the formation of this highly distorted network. Moreover, this triple interpenetrated framework exhibits high BET surface area.
