Excessive Exoergicity Reduces Singlet Exciton Fission Efficiency of Heteroacenes in Solutions

Simultaneous Intra- and Intermolecular Singlet Fission in Bipentacene Macrocycle Aggregates

Singlet fission (SF) is a process where a singlet state splits into two triplet states, which is essential for enhancing optoelectronic devices. Macrocyclic structures allow for precise control of chromophore orientation and facilitate singlet fission in solutions. However, the behavior of these structures in thin films, crucial for solid-state device optimization, remains underexplored. This study examines the aggregation and singlet fission processes of bipentacene macrocycles (BPc) in thin films using molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations. Findings indicate that BPc aggregates more rapidly with less chloroform, aligning parallel to the substrate. Intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) rates are rarely changed during evaporation, but the efficiency of intermolecular singlet fission (xSF) improves due to the increase in packing domains, suggesting that orderly crystal domains are not necessary for device efficiency. This opens avenues for varied device designs and traditional solution-based methods for optimal device development.

Above 100% Efficiency Photocharge Generation in Monolayer Semiconductors by Singlet Fission Sensitization

Sensitizing inorganic semiconductors using singlet fission (SF) materials, which produce two excitons from one absorbed photon, can potentially boost their light-to-electricity conversion efficiency. The SF sensitization is particularly exciting for two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors with atomically flat surface and high carrier mobility but limited light absorption. However, efficiently harnessing triplet excitons from SF by charge transfer at organic/inorganic interface has been challenging, and the intricate interplay among competing processes remains unresolved. Here, we investigate SF sensitization in high-quality organic/2D bilayer heterostructures featuring TIPS-Pc single crystals. Through transient magneto-optical spectroscopy, we demonstrate that despite an ultrafast SF process in sub-100 fs, a significant fraction of singlet excitons in TIPS-Pc dissociate at the interface before fission, while triplet excitons from SF undergo diffusion-limited charge transfer at the interface in ∼10 ps to ns. Remarkably, the photocharge generation efficiency reaches 126% in heterostructures with optimal thickness, resulting from the competitive interplay between singlet exciton fission, dissociation, and triplet exciton transport. This presents a promising strategy for advancing SF-enhanced 2D optoelectronics beyond the conventional limits.

Unraveling Triplet Formation Mechanisms in Acenothiophene Chromophores

The evolution of molecular platforms for singlet fission (SF) chromophores has fueled the quest for new compounds capable of generating triplets quantitatively at fast time scales. As the exploration of molecular motifs for SF has diversified, a key challenge has emerged in identifying when the criteria for SF have been satisfied. Here, we show how covalently bound molecular dimers uniquely provide a set of characteristic optical markers that can be used to distinguish triplet pair formation from processes that generate an individual triplet. These markers are contained within (i) triplet charge-transfer excited state absorption features, (ii) kinetic signatures of triplet-triplet annihilation processes, and (iii) the modulation of triplet formation rates using bridging moieties between chromophores. Our assignments are verified by time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, which directly identify triplet pairs by their electron spin and polarization patterns. We apply these diagnostic criteria to dimers of acenothiophene derivatives in solution that were recently reported to undergo efficient intermolecular SF in condensed media. While the electronic structure of these heteroatom-containing chromophores can be broadly tuned, the effect of their enhanced spin-orbit coupling and low-energy nonbonding orbitals on their SF dynamics has not been fully determined. We find that SF is fast and efficient in tetracenothiophene but that anthradithiophene exhibits fast intersystem crossing due to modifications of the singlet and triplet excited state energies upon functionalization of the heterocycle. We conclude that it is not sufficient to assign SF based on comparisons of the triplet formation kinetics between monomer and multichromophore systems.

N-Heteroacenes as an Organic Gain Medium for Room-Temperature Masers

The development of future quantum devices such as the maser, i.e., the microwave analog of the laser, could be well-served by the exploration of chemically tunable organic materials. Current iterations of room-temperature organic solid-state masers are composed of an inert host material that is doped with a spin-active molecule. In this work, we systematically modulated the structure of three nitrogen-substituted tetracene derivatives to augment their photoexcited spin dynamics and then evaluated their potential as novel maser gain media by optical, computational, and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. To facilitate these investigations, we adopted an organic glass former, 1,3,5-tri(1-naphthyl)benzene to act as a universal host. These chemical modifications impacted the rates of intersystem crossing, triplet spin polarization, triplet decay, and spin-lattice relaxation, leading to significant consequences on the conditions required to surpass the maser threshold.

Singlet Fission in Colloidal Nanoparticles of Amphipathic Diketopyrrolopyrrole Derivatives: Probing the Role of the Charge Transfer State

To evaluate the role of the charge transfer (CT) state in the singlet fission (SF) process, we prepared three 3,6-bis(thiophen-2-yl)diketopyrrolopyrrole (TDPP) derivatives with zero (Ph₂TDPP), one (Ph₂TDPP-COOH), and two (Ph₂TDPP-(COOH)₂) carboxylic groups, respectively. Their colloidal nanoparticles were also prepared by a simple precipitation method. The SF dynamics and mechanism in these colloid nanoparticles were investigated by using steady-state/transient absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Steady-state absorption spectra reveal that the strength of the CT resonance interactions between the adjacent DPP units is increased gradually from Ph₂TDPP to Ph₂TDPP-COOH and then to Ph₂TDPP-(COOH)₂. Fluorescence and transient absorption spectra demonstrate that SF is proceeded via a CT-assisted superexchange mechanism in these three nanoparticles. Furthermore, SF rate and yield are enhanced gradually with the increase of the number of the carboxylic group, which may be attributed to the enhancement of the CT coupling strength. The result of this work not only provides a better understanding of the SF mechanism especially for the role of the CT state but also gives some new insights for the design of efficient SF materials based on DPP derivatives.

Not dark yet for strong light-matter coupling to accelerate singlet fission dynamics

Polaritons are unique hybrid light-matter states that offer an alternative way to manipulate chemical processes. In this work, we show that singlet fission dynamics can be accelerated under strong light-matter coupling. For superexchange-mediated singlet fission, state mixing speeds up the dynamics in cavities when the lower polariton is close in energy to the multiexcitonic state. This effect is more pronounced in non-conventional singlet fission materials in which the energy gap between the bright singlet exciton and the multiexcitonic state is large ( > 0.1 eV). In this case, the dynamics is dominated by the polaritonic modes and not by the bare-molecule-like dark states, and, additionally, the resonant enhancement due to strong coupling is robust even for energetically broad molecular states. The present results provide a new strategy to expand the range of suitable materials for efficient singlet fission by making use of strong light-matter coupling.

Rapid Computational Approach Towards Designing Singlet-Fission Chromophores by Tuning the Diradical Character of Heteroatom-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using the Atom-Specific Fukui Function

Singlet fission (SF) is proposed as a promising method to circumvent the Shockley-Queisser threshold of single junction photovoltaics. Progress towards realizing efficient SF-based devices has been impeded by the fact that only a handful of molecules and their derivatives practically exhibit efficient SF. In the present work, we demonstrate a TDDFT-based rapid and cost-effective computational approach for designing SF chromophores by doping various atomic sites (substituting carbon atoms) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon. We establish a hitherto unexplored, direct correlation between the atom-specific chemical reactivity parameter─Fukui function─of these molecules with their frontier molecular orbital energies, diradical characters, and vertical singlet and triplet excitation energies. These quantitative correlations show exactly opposite trends for nitrogen-doped molecules and phosphorus- or silicon-doped molecules. The doped derivatives that have the Fukui function falling in a range of 0.03-0.14 possess the required intermediate diradical character and suitable singlet-triplet energies to qualify for SF candidature. Our findings enable one, at reasonable computational times and cost, to easily assess the doping criteria and to develop design rules for SF molecules in particular and for diradicaloids in general.

Singlet fission dynamics and optical spectra of pentacene and its derivatives

A multimode Brownian oscillator model is employed to investigate the absorption spectra of pentacene and its derivatives in solution and thin films. Excellent agreement has been obtained between simulated and measured absorption spectra. Furthermore, using parameters obtained from fitting the absorption spectra of these pentacene derivatives, the singlet fission dynamics and two-dimensional electronic spectra of an ab initio Hamiltonian are investigated by Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variation with multiple Davydov trial states. It is found that the periodic wave packet motion induced in the displaced excited state, and the accompanying vibrational relaxation, can be visualized by two-dimensional electronic spectra at short times.

Unconventional singlet fission materials

Singlet fission (SF) is a photophysical downconversion pathway, in which a singlet excitation transforms into two triplet excited states. As such, it constitutes an exciton multiplication generation process, which is currently at the focal point for future integration into solar energy conversion devices. Beyond this, various other exciting applications were proposed, including quantum cryptography or organic light emitting diodes. Also, the mechanistic understanding evolved rapidly during the last year. Unfortunately, the number of suitable SF-chromophores is still limited. This is per se problematic, considering the wide range of envisaged applicability. With that in mind, we emphasize uncommon SF-scaffolds and outline requirements as well as strategies to expand the chromophore pool of SF-materials.

Planarity and Length of the Bridge Control Rate and Efficiency of Intramolecular Singlet Fission in Pentacene Dimers

Singlet fission (SF) improves the power conversion efficiency of optoelectronic devices by converting high-energy photons into two triplet excitons. SF dynamics and efficiency (Φ) are controlled by various factors. Here, the effect of planarity and length of the bridge in pentacene dimers on the intramolecular SF (iSF) process was investigated by synthesizing the dimers connected by bridges having fluorene (FL-PD, planar), methyl-substituted biphenyl (MBP-PD, twisted), and diphenyl acetylene (DPA-PD, longer) groups and characterizing their excited-state relaxation dynamics using nanosecond and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Transient absorption studies reveal that iSF dynamics of FL-PD having a planar bridge are ∼787 times faster (187 ps) and exhibit higher Φ (198%) by feasible electronic coupling, compared to MBP-PD possessing a twisted bridge showing a low Φ of ∼16%. However compared to FL-PD, iSF dynamics of DPA-PD with an increase of bridge length are slower by an order (1.09 ns) and show comparable Φ of 185% through extended conjugation. Thus, the planarity and length of the bridge in pentacene dimers control the rate and efficiency of the iSF process.

Singlet fission relevant energetics from optimally tuned range-separated hybrids

As a promising idea to design high-efficiency organic photovoltaics, singlet fission (SF) mechanism, i.e., generating two triplet excitons out of a single photon absorption, has recently come into the spotlight. Even though much effort has been devoted to this arena, accurately accounting for the SF process from the theoretical perspective has proven to be challenging. Herein, the SF energetics have thoroughly been investigated with the help of optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals (OT-RSHs) in both gas and solvent phases. Taking a series of experimentally known SF chromophores as working models, we have proposed and validated several variants of OT-RSH approximations for the reliable prediction of the energy levels which match the crucial criteria for the SF process, namely, the negative singlet-triplet and triplet-triplet energy gaps. We scrutinize the role of the OT-RSH ingredients, i.e., the underlying density functional approximations, short- and long-range exact-like exchange, as well as the range-separation parameter, for our purpose. The newly designed OT-RSHs outperform the standard RSHs and other related schemes such as screened-exchange approximations as well as other density functionals from different rungs for describing the SF energetics. More importantly, it is unveiled that although the OT-RSH coupled with the polarizable continuum model, OT-RSH-PCM, as well as the screened versions, OT-SRSHs, which account for the screening effect by the electron correlation through the scalar dielectric constant have some advantages over gas-phase computations using OT-RSHs, the energetics criteria of the SF process may not necessarily be satisfied. This in turn corroborates the idea of performing both the optimal tuning procedure and subsequent computations of the SF relevant energetics using OT-RSHs as a more reliable and affordable framework, at least for the present purpose. The applicability of the proposed models is also put into broader perspective, where they are used for the computational design of several chromophores as promising candidates prone to utilization in the SF-based materials. Hopefully, our recommended OT-RSHs can function as efficient models for both the theoretical modeling of SF chromophores and confirming the experimental observations in the field.

The Photophysical Properties of Triisopropylsilyl-ethynylpentacene—A Molecule with an Unusually Large Singlet-Triplet Energy Gap—In Solution and Solid Phases

The process of singlet-exciton fission (SEF) has attracted much attention of late. One of the most popular SEF compounds is TIPS-pentacene (TIPS-P, where TIPS = triisopropylsilylethynyl) but, despite its extensive use as both a reference and building block, its photophysical properties are not so well established. In particular, the triplet state excitation energy remains uncertain. Here, we report quantitative data and spectral characterization for excited-singlet and -triplet states in dilute solution. The triplet energy is determined to be 7940 ± 1200 cm−1 on the basis of sensitization studies using time-resolved photoacoustic calorimetry. The triplet quantum yield at the limit of low concentration and low laser intensity is only ca. 1%. Self-quenching occurs at high solute concentration where the fluorescence yield and lifetime decrease markedly relative to dilute solution but we were unable to detect excimer emission by steady-state spectroscopy. Short-lived fluorescence, free from excimer emission or phosphorescence, occurs for crystals of TIPS-P, most likely from amorphous domains.

Synthesis, Photophysical and Electronic Properties of New Red-to-NIR Emitting Donor-Acceptor Pyrene Derivatives

We synthesized new pyrene derivatives with strong bis(para-methoxyphenyl)amine donors at the 2,7-positions and n-azaacene acceptors at the K-region of pyrene. The compounds possess a strong intramolecular charge transfer, leading to unusual properties such as emission in the red to NIR region (700 nm), which has not been reported before for monomeric pyrenes. Detailed photophysical studies reveal very long intrinsic lifetimes of >100 ns for the new compounds, which is typical for 2,7-substituted pyrenes but not for K-region substituted pyrenes. The incorporation of strong donors and acceptors leads to very low reduction and oxidation potentials, and spectroelectrochemical studies show that the compounds are on the borderline between localized Robin-Day class-II and delocalized Robin-Day class-III species.

Aromaticity and tautomerism of a 4n π electron dihydrohexaazapentacene

We report herein the intriguing tautomerism behaviors of new dihydrohexaazapentacene derivatives. The dihydrohexaazapentacene molecules with 4n π electrons exist as two stable tautomers in solution and exhibits globe aromaticity.

Singlet fission in a hexacene dimer: energetics dictate dynamics

Singlet fission (SF) is an exciton multiplication process with the potential to raise the efficiency limit of single junction solar cells from 33% to up to 45%. Most chromophores generally undergo SF as solid-state crystals. However, when such molecules are covalently coupled, the dimers can be used as model systems to study fundamental photophysical dynamics where a singlet exciton splits into two triplet excitons within individual molecules. Here we report the synthesis and photophysical characterization of singlet fission of a hexacene dimer. Comparing the hexacene dimer to analogous tetracene and pentacene dimers reveals that excess exoergicity slows down singlet fission, similar to what is observed in molecular crystals. Conversely, the lower triplet energy of hexacene results in an increase in the rate of triplet pair recombination, following the energy gap law for radiationless transitions. These results point to design rules for singlet fission chromophores: the energy gap between singlet and triplet pair should be minimal, and the gap between triplet pair and ground state should be large.

We report the synthesis and photophysical characterization of highly exoergic singlet fission in a hexacene dimer revealing exciton dynamics that follow the energy gap law.

Morphology independent triplet formation in pentalene films: Singlet fission as the triplet formation mechanism

Singlet fission (SF), a spin-allowed multiexciton generation process, experienced renewed interest in the last decade due to its potential to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. The hurdles now lie in the limited range of SF-capable materials and demanding morphology requirement for an efficient fission process. Although primary fission to yield triplet pair (¹TT) can occur independently of film morphology in intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) materials, the separation of the ¹TT state has been shown to be highly dependent on the packing motif and morphologies. In this work, we have demonstrated that both iSF and triplet pair separation processes took place irrelevant of molecular order and/or film morphology in a series of pentalene compounds. With the >180% fission efficiency, the suitable triplet energy levels, and the long lifetime of the triplet excitons, these iSF systems can be integrated into practical photovoltaic application.

Ultra-fast intramolecular singlet fission to persistent multiexcitons by molecular design

Singlet fission-that is, the generation of two triplets from a lone singlet state-has recently resurfaced as a promising process for the generation of multiexcitons in organic systems. Although advances in this area have led to the discovery of modular classes of chromophores, controlling the fate of the multiexciton states has been a major challenge; for example, promoting fast multiexciton generation while maintaining long triplet lifetimes. Unravelling the dynamical evolution of the spin- and energy conversion processes from the transition of singlet excitons to correlated triplet pairs and individual triplet excitons is necessary to design materials that are optimized for translational technologies. Here, we engineer molecules featuring a discrete energy gradient that promotes the migration of strongly coupled triplet pairs to a spatially separated, weakly coupled state that readily dissociates into free triplets. This 'energy cleft' concept allows us to combine the amplification and migration processes within a single molecule, with rapid dissociation of tightly bound triplet pairs into individual triplets that exhibit lifetimes of ~20 µs.

Three-Dimensional Pyrene-Fused N-Heteroacenes

Four three-dimensional (3D) pyrene-fused N-heteroacenes (P1-P4) are designed and synthesized. From P1 to P4, their lengths are extended in an iterative way, where the thiadiazole unit can be reduced to diamine and the obtained diamines can be further condensed with the diketones with a thiadiazole unit. Compared to their two-dimensional counterparts, the solubility of these 3D pyrene-fused N-heteroacenes is improved by this 3D covalent linkage with two-dimensional units. The diameters of P1-P4 are 3.66, 6.06, 8.48 and 10.88 nm, respectively, and these 3D molecules are characterized by 1H, 13C and 2D NMR, MS, UV-vis, PL and CV spectra. Our strategy shows a promising way to large 3D pyrene-fused N-heteroacenes.

Coupled double triplet state in singlet fission

The highly unusual state, 1(TT), is a coupled, double triplet state that has recently garnered significant attention. This multiexcitonic state can be formed by a quantum transition from a single-photon bright state in a variety of organic semiconducting materials. 1(TT)'s transient nature and similarity to independent triplets, however, has led to significant difficulties in characterization and prediction of its properties. Recent progress describing 1(TT) from theory and experiment are breaking through these difficulties, and have greatly advanced our comprehension of this state. Starting from the early description of 1(TT) in polyenes, this perspective discusses formation mechanisms, spectroscopic signatures, and the scope of intertriplet interactions. When employing singlet fission to generate charge carriers in a solar cell, 1(TT) has a central role. Due to the variety of coupling strengths between triplet states in 1(TT) amongst different chromophores, two different strategies are discussed to enable efficient charge carrier extraction. Continued growth in our understanding of 1(TT) may lead to control over complex quantum states for intriguing applications beyond high-efficiency, organic solar cells.

Ultrafast Dynamics of Charge Transfer and Photochemical Reactions in Solar Energy Conversion

For decades, ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy has found its way into an increasing number of applications. It has become a vital technique to investigate energy conversion processes and charge transfer dynamics in optoelectronic systems such as solar cells and solar-driven photocatalytic applications. The understanding of charge transfer and photochemical reactions can help optimize and improve the performance of relevant devices with solar energy conversion processes. Here, the fundamental principles of photochemical and photophysical processes in photoinduced reactions, in which the fundamental charge carrier dynamic processes include interfacial electron transfer, singlet excitons, triplet excitons, excitons fission, and recombination, are reviewed. Transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy techniques provide a good understanding of the energy/electron transfer processes. These processes, including excited state generation and interfacial energy/electron transfer, are dominate constituents of solar energy conversion applications, for example, dye-sensitized solar cells and photocatalysis. An outlook for intrinsic electron/energy transfer dynamics via TA spectroscopic characterization is provided, establishing a foundation for the rational design of solar energy conversion devices.

Photophysical characterization and time-resolved spectroscopy of a anthradithiophene dimer: exploring the role of conformation in singlet fission

Quantitative singlet fission has been observed for a variety of acene derivatives such as tetracene and pentacene, and efforts to extend the library of singlet fission compounds is of current interest. Preliminary calculations suggest anthradithiophenes exhibit significant exothermicity between the first optically-allowed singlet state, S₁, and 2 × T₁ with an energy difference of >5000 cm^-1. Given the fulfillment of this ingredient for singlet fission, here we investigate the singlet fission capability of a difluorinated anthradithiophene dimer (2ADT) covalently linked by a (dimethylsilyl)ethane bridge and derivatized by triisobutylsilylethynyl (TIBS) groups. Photophysical characterization of 2ADT and the single functionalized ADT monomer were carried out in toluene and acetone solution via absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, and their photo-initiated dynamics were investigated with time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. In accordance with computational predictions, two conformers of 2ADT were observed via fluorescence spectroscopy and were assigned to structures with the ADT cores trans or cis to one another about the covalent bridge. The two conformers exhibited markedly different excited state deactivation mechanisms, with the minor trans population being representative of the ADT monomer showing primarily radiative decay, while the dominant cis population underwent relaxation into an excimer geometry before internally converting to the ground state. The excimer formation kinetics were found to be solvent dependent, yielding time constants of ∼1.75 ns in toluene, and ∼600 ps in acetone. While the difference in rates elicits a role for the solvent in stabilizing the excimer structure, the rate is still decidedly long compared to most singlet fission rates of analogous dimers, suggesting that the excimer is neither a kinetic nor a thermodynamic trap, yet singlet fission was still not observed. The result highlights the sensitivity of the electronic coupling element between the singlet and correlated triplet pair states, to the dimer conformation in dictating singlet fission efficiency even when the energetic requirements are met.

Molecular Dual-Rotators with Large Consecutive Emission Chromism for Visualized and High-Pressure Sensing

Low-cost, stable, highly sensitive, and easy-to-equip fluorescent high-pressure sensors are always attractive in both industrial and scientific communities. Organic emitting materials with pressure-dependent bathochromisms usually exhibit prominent mechanoluminescence, due to disturbance of intermolecular packing. This hinders their applications in stable and robust pressure sensing. In this work, we have developed a mechanically stable organic molecular pressure sensor, caused by intramolecular consecutive rotations by pressure, which exhibit large and eye-detectable emission bathochromism from yellow-green to red fluorescence and can be used for 0-15 GPa pressure sensing. The emission bathochromism shows good linear relationship with pressure, exhibiting a high linear coefficient of 9.1 nm/GPa. Moreover, this molecular sensor exhibits high thermal and mechanical stabilities, indicating good potentials for robust and outdoor applications.

Absence of Intramolecular Singlet Fission in Pentacene-Perylenediimide Heterodimers: The Role of Charge Transfer State

A new class of donor-acceptor heterodimers based on two singlet fission (SF)-active chromophores, i.e., pentacene (Pc) and perylenediimide (PDI), was developed to investigate the role of charge transfer (CT) state on the excitonic dynamics. The CT state is efficiently generated upon photoexcitation. However, the resulting CT state decays to different energy states depending on the energy levels of the CT state. It undergoes extremely rapid deactivation to the ground state in polar CH₂Cl₂, whereas it undergoes transformation to a Pc triplet in nonpolar toluene. The efficient triplet generation in toluene is not due to SF but CT-mediated intersystem crossing. In light of the energy landscape, it is suggested that the deep energy level of the CT state relative to that of the triplet pair state makes the CT state actually serve as a trap state that cannot undergoes an intramolecular singlet fission process. These results provide guidance for the design of SF materials and highlight the requisite for more widely applicable design principles.

Quantum Interference in Singlet Fission: J- and H-Aggregate Behavior

The quantum interference in singlet fission (SF) among the multiple pathways from singlet excited states to correlated triplet pair states is comprehensively investigated. The analytical analysis reveals that this interference is strongly affected by the exciton-exciton coupling and is closely related to the property of J- and H-type of aggregates. Different from the interference in the spectra of aggregates, which depends only on the sign of exciton-exciton coupling, the interference in SF is additionally related to the signs of couplings between singlet excited states and triplet pair states. The interference dynamics is further demonstrated numerically by a time-dependent wavepacket diffusion method with electron-phonon interactions incorporated. Finally, we take a pentacene dimer as a concrete example to show how to adjust the constructive and destructive interferences in SF dynamics in terms of J-/H-aggregate behaviors. The results presented here may provide guiding principles for designing efficient SF materials through directly tuning quantum interference via morphology engineering.

Spectroscopic Study of Thiophene-Pyrrole-Containing S,N-Heteroheptacenes Compared to Acenes and Phenacenes

In this study, we report a detailed spectroscopic study concerning the energy levels and vibrational structure of thiophene-pyrrole-containing S,N-heteroacenes. The aim of the study is first, to understand the differences in the photoluminescence (PL) efficiencies in this structurally similar series and second, to compare the electronic structure of S,N-heteroacenes to that of linear acenes and phenacenes, with a view to derive guidelines for the design of singlet fission materials. For S,N-heteroacenes comprising seven fused heterocyclic rings, we observe a higher PL quantum yield for derivatives with terminal thienothiophene units than for thienopyrrole-capped ones. This is assigned to a stronger tendency of the thienopyrrole-capped derivatives to form nonemissive associates in dilute solution, producing emissive excimers at higher concentration. By conducting time-resolved PL studies at 77 K, we further determine the lowest singlet and triplet energies for the S,N-heteroacenes with three, five, and seven fused rings. We show that their energies evolve with oligomer length analogously to those of phenacenes, yet in a fundamentally different way from that of linear acenes. This difference in evolution is attributed to the increasingly biradical character in acenes with increasing chain length in contrast to the S,N-heteroacenes and phenacenes.

Enhancing Singlet Fission Dynamics by Suppressing Destructive Interference between Charge-Transfer Pathways

We apply a real-time path-integral approach to investigate the charge-transfer (CT)-mediated singlet fission quantum dynamics in a model pentacene dimer. Our path-integral method gives reliable fission dynamics across various reaction regimes as well as a broad range of reorganization energies and temperatures. With this method, we investigated the destructive interference between the two CT-mediated fission pathways and discovered two mechanisms that can suppress this deleterious effect. First, increasing the energy gap between the two CT states effectively shuts down the high-lying CT pathway, leaving a better functioning low-lying CT pathway with a minimum amount of destructive interference. Second, intermolecular vibrations induce electronic coupling fluctuations, such that the destructive cancellations due to the different signs in static electronic couplings are suppressed. Our numerical results suggest that these two effects can enhance the fission rate up to three times. These findings reveal promising design principles for more efficient singlet fission materials.

Is the Chemical Strategy for Imbuing "Polyene" Character in Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Chromophores Sufficient for Singlet Fission?

In this work, we have rationally designed and synthesized a novel thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole (TDPP)-vinyl-based dimer. We have investigated the optical and electronic properties and have probed the photophysical dynamics using transient absorption to investigate the possibility of singlet exciton fission. These revealed extremely rapid decay to the ground state (<50 ps), which we confirm is due to intramolecular excitonic processes rather than large-scale conformational change enabled by the vinyl linker. In all cases, the main excited state appears to be "dark", suggesting rapid internal conversion into a dark 2A_g-type singlet state. We found no evidence of triplet formation in TDPP-V-TDPP under direct photoexcitation. This may be a consequence of significant singlet stabilization in the dimer, bringing it below the energy needed to form two triplets. Our studies on this model compound set valuable lessons for design of novel triplet-forming materials and highlight the need for more broadly applicable design principles.
