“π-Hole−π” Interaction Promoted Photocatalytic Hydrodefluorination via Inner-Sphere Electron Transfer

Mechanical Bond Induced Enhancement and Purification of Pyrene Emission in the Solid State

To address key concerns on solid-state pyrene-based luminescent materials, we propose a novel and efficient mechanical bond strategy. This strategy results in a transformation from ACQ to AIE effect and a remarkable enhancement of pyrene emission in the solid state. Moreover, an unusual purification of emission is also achieved. Through computational calculation and experimental characterisation, finally determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, we prove that the excellent emissions result from mechanical bond induced refinement of molecular arrangements, including reduced π-π stacking, well-ordered packing and enhanced structural stability. This work demonstrates the potential of mechanical bond in the field of organic luminescent molecules, providing a new avenue for developing high-performance organic luminescent materials.

Radical reactions enabled by polyfluoroaryl fragments: photocatalysis and beyond

Polyfluoroarenes have been known for a long time, but they are most often used as fluorinated building blocks for the synthesis of aromatic compounds. At the same time, due to peculiar fluorine effect, they have unique properties that provide applications in various fields ranging from synthesis to materials science. This review summarizes advances in the radical chemistry of polyfluoroarenes, which have become possible mainly with the advent of photocatalysis. Transformations of the fluorinated ring via the C-F bond activation, as well as use of fluoroaryl fragments as activating groups and hydrogen atom transfer agents are discussed. The ability of fluoroarenes to serve as catalysts is also considred.

General alkyl fluoride functionalization via short-lived carbocation-organozincate ion pairs

Fluorinated organic compounds are frequently used across the chemical and life sciences. Although a large, structurally diverse pool of alkyl fluorides is nowadays available, synthetic applications trail behind the widely accepted utility of other halides. We envisioned that C(sp2)-C(sp3) cross-coupling reactions of alkyl fluorides with fluorophilic organozinc compounds should be possible through a heterolytic mechanism that involves short-lived ion pairs and uses the stability of the Zn-F bond as the thermodynamic driving force. This would be mechanistically different from previously reported radical reactions and overcome long-standing limitations of organometallic cross-coupling methodology, including competing β-hydride elimination, homodimerization and hydrodefluorination. Here, we show a practical Csp3-F bond functionalization method that expands the currently restricted synthetic space of unactivated primary, secondary and tertiary C(sp3)-F bonds but also uses benzylic, propargylic and acyl fluorides. Many functional groups and sterically demanding substrates are tolerated, which allows practical carbon-carbon bond formation and late-stage functionalization.

Alkynylphosphonium Pt(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Features of Photophysical Properties in Solution and in the Solid State

A series of heteroleptic bis-alkynyl-diimine mononuclear Pt(II) complexes with alkynylphosphonium and di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dtbpy) ligands have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods and single-crystal XRD. The Pt(II) complexes obtained in the present study demonstrate triplet emission in solution, which originates from 3MLCT/3LC states where the nature of the π-conjugated linker in the alkynylphosphonium ligand manages the contributions of each transition, and this conclusion is supported by DFT calculations. Additionally, the presence of the phosphonium group connected to alkynyl through the π-conjugated linker enhances nonlinear optical properties of the Pt(II) complexes increasing two-photon absorption cross section up to 400 GM. In the solid state, the Pt(II) complexes demonstrate emission that is attributed to 3MMLCT transitions due to the presence of Pt-Pt metallophilic interactions, and the reversible assembly and disassembly of these interactions by grinding and solvent treatment are responsible for the mechanochromic luminescence. It has been experimentally shown that stimuli-responsive emission of the Pt(II) complexes is the result of a "monomer/dimer" transformation; this conclusion is confirmed by DFT calculations for discrete complexes and different dimers with or without Pt-Pt interactions.

Synthesis of Alkylated Polyfluorobenzenes through Decarboxylative Giese Addition of Aliphatic N-Hydroxyphthalimide Esters with Polyfluorostyrene

Polyfluoroaromatic compounds play crucial roles in medicinal and material science. However, the synthesis of alkylated polyfluoroarenes has been relatively underdeveloped. In this study, we devised a novel decarboxylative coupling reaction between aliphatic N-hydroxyphthalimide esters and polyfluorostyrene, leveraging the photochemical activity of electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes. This method offers simple reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the practicality of this protocol through late-stage polyfluoroaryl modification of biologically active molecules using readily available carboxylic acids as starting materials, thus providing an important supplement to the current toolbox for accessing alkylated polyfluoroaryl motifs.

N-Heterocyclic Nitrenium-Catalyzed Photohomolysis of CF3SO2Cl for Alkene Trifluoromethylation

N-Heterocyclic nitreniums (NHNs) have been utilized as Lewis acid catalysts to activate substrates with lone pairs. Alternative to their conventional applications, we have discovered that NHNs can also serve as charge transfer complex catalysts. Herein, we present another potential of NHNs by utilizing a weak interaction between NHNs and CF3SO2Cl. The method promotes CF3SO2Cl to undergo photohomolysis, resulting in the CF3 radical. Mechanistic studies suggested that the weak interaction could be due to the π-hole effect of NHNs.

Visible-Light-Induced N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Single Electron Reduction of Mono-Fluoroarenes

Fluoroarenes are abundant and readily available feedstocks. However, due to the high reduction potentials of mono-fluoroarenes, their photoreduction remains a continuing challenge, motivating the development of efficient activation modes to address this issue. This report presents the blue light-induced N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed single electron reduction of mono-fluoroarenes for biaryl cross-couplings. We discovered that under blue light irradiation, NHC/tBuOK combination could construct powerful photoactive architectures to promote single electron transfer for C_aryl -F bond reduction via forming highly reducing NHC radical anion. Notably, the strategy was also successful to reduce C_aryl -O, C_aryl -N, and C_aryl -S bonds for biaryl cross-couplings.

Pyrene-Based D-A Molecules as Efficient Heterogeneous Catalysts for Visible-Light-Induced Aerobic Organic Transformations

In this work, an efficient visible light promoted aerobic dehydro-coupling of amines, oxidation of thioethers and hydroxylation of arylboronic acids under benign conditions by using pyrene-based donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated organic molecules was described. Donor-acceptor structure influences their π-conjugation and band gap a lot, and thereby enhances their visible light absorption ability, single electron transfer and oxidative behaviors. Alkynyl units in PS-IV play a crucial role in the catalyst which could serve as electron transferring bridge to strengthen electron delocalization, thus facilitating the single electron transfer from photosensitizer to substrates, and making it an efficient ⋅O₂ ^- generator. While PS-III without alkynyl units tends to produce ¹ O₂ . Therefore, these molecules can serve as efficient catalysts for different kinds of visible-light-induced aerobic organic reactions. More importantly, the simply structured molecule is insoluble and stable in various solvents, and thus could be recycled as heterogeneous catalyst for many rounds with slight catalytic activity degradation. Besides, large scale (1 mol) reaction of benzylamine coupling proceeded smoothly under the standard conditions.

Transition metal-free photochemical C-F activation for the preparation of difluorinated-oxindole derivatives

The development of strategies for single and selective C-F bond activation represents an important avenue to overcome limitations in the synthesis of valuable fluorine-containing compounds. The synthetic and medicinal research communities would benefit from new routes that access such relevant molecules in a simple manner. Herein we disclose a straightforward and mechanistically distinct pathway to generate gem-difluoromethyl radicals and their installation onto N-arylmethacrylamides for the preparation of valuable difluorinated oxindole derivatives. To achieve operational simplicity, the use of a readily available benzenethiol as a photocatalyst under open-to-air conditions was developed, demonstrating the facile multigram preparation of the targeted fluorinated molecules. Additionally, dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) and empirical investigations provide a new basis to support the proposed reaction pathway, indicating that arene thiolate is an efficient organophotocatalyst for this transformation.

Copper-catalyzed defluorinative arylboration of vinylarenes with polyfluoroarenes

An unprecedented but challenging defluorinative arylboration has been achieved. Enabled by a copper catalyst, an interesting procedure on defluorinative arylboration of styrenes has been established. With polyfluoroarenes as the substrates, this methodology offers flexible and facile access to provide a diverse assortment of products under mild reaction conditions. In addition, by using a chiral phosphine ligand, an enantioselective defluorinative arylboration was also realized, affording a set of chiral products with unprecedented levels of enantioselectivity.

Advances in Catalytic C–F Bond Activation and Transformation of Aromatic Fluorides

The activation and transformation of C–F bonds in fluoro-aromatics is a highly desirable process in organic chemistry. It provides synthetic methods/protocols for the generation of organic compounds possessing single or multiple C–F bonds, and effective catalytic systems for further study of the activation mode of inert chemical bonds. Due to the high polarity of the C–F bond and it having the highest bond energy in organics, C–F activation often faces considerable academic challenges. In this mini-review, the important research achievements in the activation and transformation of aromatic C–F bond, catalyzed by transition metal and metal-free systems, are presented.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Novel Bis(diphenylphosphane oxide)methanidoytterbium(III) Complexes

Reaction of [YbCp₂(dme)] (Cp = cyclopentadienyl, dme = 1,2 dimethoxyethane) with bis(diphenylphosphano)methane dioxide (H₂dppmO₂) leads to deprotonation of the ligand H₂dppmO₂ and oxidation of ytterbium, forming an extremely air-sensitive product, [Yb^III(HdppmO₂)₃] (1), a six-coordinate complex with three chelating (OPCHPO) HdppmO₂ ligands. Complex 1 was also obtained by a redox transmetallation/protolysis synthesis from metallic ytterbium, Hg(C₆F₅)_2, and H₂dppmO₂. In a further preparation, the reaction of [Yb(C₆F₅)₂] with H₂dppmO₂, not only yielded compound 1, but also gave a remarkable tetranuclear cage, [Yb₄(µ-HdppmO₂)₆(µ-F)₆] (2) containing two [Yb(µ-F)]₂ rhombic units linked by two fluoride ligands and the tetranuclear unit is encapsulated by six bridging HdppmO₂ donors. The fluoride ligands of the cage result from C-F activation of pentafluorobenzene and concomitant formation of p-H₂C₆F₄ and m-H₂C₆F₄, the last being an unexpected product.

Light-Driven Hydrodefluorination of Electron-Rich Aryl Fluorides by an Anionic Rhodium-Gallium Photoredox Catalyst

An anionic Rh-Ga complex catalyzed the hydrodefluorination of challenging C-F bonds in electron-rich aryl fluorides and trifluoromethylarenes when irradiated with violet light in the presence of H₂ , a stoichiometric alkoxide base, and a crown-ether additive. Based on theoretical calculations, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), which is delocalized across both the Rh and Ga atoms, becomes singly occupied upon excitation, thereby poising the Rh-Ga complex for photoinduced single-electron transfer (SET). Stoichiometric and control reactions support that the C-F activation is mediated by the excited anionic Rh-Ga complex. After SET, the proposed neutral Rh⁰ intermediate was detected by EPR spectroscopy, which matched the spectrum of an independently synthesized sample. Deuterium-labeling studies corroborate the generation of aryl radicals during catalysis and their subsequent hydrogen-atom abstraction from the THF solvent to generate the hydrodefluorinated arene products. Altogether, the combined experimental and theoretical data support an unconventional bimetallic excitation that achieves the activation of strong C-F bonds and uses H₂ and base as the terminal reductant.

Chemodivergent Csp3─F bond functionalization and cross-electrophile alkyl-alkyl coupling with alkyl fluorides

The widespread use of fluorinated organic compounds in the health, agrochemical, and materials sciences is sustained by a steadily growing pool of commercially available fine chemicals. The synthetic utility of the increasingly ubiquitous Csp³─F bond, however, remains to be fully exploited, which is often a difficult task because of its paramount stability and chemical inertness. Here, we demonstrate chemodivergent activation of monofluoroalkyl compounds toward either nucleophilic or electrophilic intermediates. This is accomplished under conditions that are compatible with several reaction types and many functional groups, which drastically widens the current scope of organofluorine chemistry and sets the stage for carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formations, stereoselective construction of bisoxindole alkaloid scaffolds via in situ Umpolung, and cross-electrophilic coupling methodology. The selective generation of either nucleophilic or electrophilic species and the possibility of doing so simultaneously or, alternatively, switching molecular polarity enable previously unidentified synthetic opportunities that recognize alkyl fluorides as chemodivergent building blocks.

Photochemical and Electrochemical Strategies for Hydrodefluorination of Fluorinated Organic Compounds

Hydrodefluorination (HDF) is a very important fundamental transformation for conversion of the C-F bond into the C-H bond in organic synthesis. In the past decade, much progress has been achieved with HDF through the utility of low-valent metals, transition-metal complexes and main-group Lewis acids. Recently, novel methods have been introduced for this purpose through photo- and electrochemical pathways, which are of great significance, due to their considerable environmental and economical advantages. This Review highlights the HDF of fluorinated organic compounds (FOCs) through photo- and electrochemical strategies, along with mechanistic insights.

Photoinduced Organic Reactions by Employing Pyrene Catalysts

Pyrene is one of the most attractive polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in photochemistry. Based on their redox properties, pyrenes have potential as photosensitizers. In this review, we summarize recent developments in pyrene-catalyzed photoinduced organic reactions occurring via energy transfer or single-electron transfer based on the excited state of the pyrene.

Diazaphospholene-Catalyzed Hydrodefluorination of Polyfluoroarenes with Phenylsilane via Concerted Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution

The metal-free catalytic C-F bond activation of polyfluoroarenes was achieved with diazaphospholene as the catalyst and phenylsilane as the terminal reductant. Density functional theory calculations suggested a concerted nucleophilic aromatic substitution mechanism.

Recent advances in radical-based C-F bond activation of polyfluoroarenes and gem-difluoroalkenes

The direct employment of polyfluoroarenes and gem-difluoroalkenes as building blocks is regarded as one of the most effective and straightforward strategies for the introduction of fluorine-containing moieties into organic skeletons. Accordingly, radical chemistry has gradually become a mild and powerful method for the activation of their C-F bonds. The radical-based transformations of polyfluoroarenes and gem-difluoroalkenes can be primarily categorized into three types based on the specific intermediates involved: (1) multifluoroaryl radical anions, (2) monofluoroalkenyl radicals and (3) other radicals. Compared with the more established multifluoroaryl radical anion pathway, the monofluoroalkenyl radical-involved cross-coupling reaction can proceed through C-radical cross-coupling, radical addition/elimination or the hydrogen atom transfer process. For the presented examples in this review, the typical reaction modes, substrate scope, radical-involved mechanisms, and late-stage applications in the modification of bioactive molecules are discussed, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances of the radical-based transformations of polyfluoroarenes and gem-difluoroalkenes.

Metal-Free Photoredox-Catalyzed Hydrodefluorination of Fluoroarenes Utilizing Amide Solvent as Reductant

A metal-free photoredox-catalyzed hydrodefluorination of fluoroarenes was achieved by using N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-para-phenylenediamine (1) as a strong photoreduction catalyst. This reaction was applicable not only to electron-rich monofluoroarenes but also to polyfluoroarenes to afford non-fluorinated arenes. The experimental mechanistic studies indicated that the amide solvent NMP plays an important role for regeneration of the photocatalyst, enabling additive-free photoreduction catalysis.

C-F bond activation under transition-metal-free conditions

The unique properties of fluorine-containing organic compounds make fluorine substitution attractive for the development of pharmaceuticals and various specialty materials, which have inspired the evolution of diverse C-F bond activation techniques. Although many advances have been made in functionalizations of activated C-F bonds utilizing transition metal complexes, there are fewer approaches available for nonactivated C-F bonds due to the difficulty in oxidative addition of transition metals to the inert C-F bonds. In this regard, using Lewis acid to abstract the fluoride and light/radical initiator to generate the radical intermediate have emerged as powerful tools for activating those inert C-F bonds. Meanwhile, these transition-metal-free processes are greener, economical, and for the pharmaceutical industry, without heavy metal residues. This review provides an overview of recent C-F bond activations and functionalizations under transition-metal-free conditions. The key mechanisms involved are demonstrated and discussed in detail. Finally, a brief discussion on the existing limitations of this field and our perspective are presented.

Catalytic Hydrodefluorination via Oxidative Addition, Ligand Metathesis, and Reductive Elimination at Bi(I)/Bi(III) Centers

Herein, we report a hydrodefluorination reaction of polyfluoroarenes catalyzed by bismuthinidenes, Phebox-Bi(I) and OMe-Phebox-Bi(I). Mechanistic studies on the elementary steps support a Bi(I)/Bi(III) redox cycle that comprises C(sp²)-F oxidative addition, F/H ligand metathesis, and C(sp²)-H reductive elimination. Isolation and characterization of a cationic Phebox-Bi(III)(4-tetrafluoropyridyl) triflate manifests the feasible oxidative addition of Phebox-Bi(I) into the C(sp²)-F bond. Spectroscopic evidence was provided for the formation of a transient Phebox-Bi(III)(4-tetrafluoropyridyl) hydride during catalysis, which decomposes at low temperature to afford the corresponding C(sp²)-H bond while regenerating the propagating Phebox-Bi(I). This protocol represents a distinct catalytic example where a main-group center performs three elementary organometallic steps in a low-valent redox manifold.

Defluorodearomatization: A Photocatalytic Birch-Like Reduction That Enables C-C Bond Formation and Provides Access to Unnatural Cannabinoids

Within the framework of discovery chemistry, polyfluorination remains a synthetic challenge despite its ability to provide useful characteristics, such as a reduction in the number of hydrogen bond donors and metabolic stability. Coupling a reversal of this methodology with photocatalysis has been demonstrated to allow the rapid synthesis of previously difficult or impossible targets by starting with fluorines everywhere and selectively removing or functionalizing them. Herein, we demonstrate a novel method to synthesize 1,4-cyclohexadienes through a dearomative photocatalytic C-C coupling reaction. This allows for access to materials that are orthogonal to the selectivity of the Birch reaction and are more functional-group-tolerant. The reaction also allows the efficient synthesis of polyfluorinated cannabinoids. While the yields are modest, the access to the new chemical space provided by the reaction is unprecedented by any means. The trifluorinated analog of THC, 1-deoxy-1,2,4-trifluoro-THC, is synthesized, demonstrating the importance of discovery chemistry and the ability to explore otherwise unknown structure-activity relationships.

Bridged Azobenzene Enables Dynamic Control of Through-Space Charge Transfer for Photochemical Conversion

Through-space charge transfer (TSCT) has become a thriving strategy of modulating photogenerated charges in organic photoresponsive molecular systems for potential applications in luminescence, optoelectronics, and photochemical conversion. Yet fixed configuration between electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) is disadvantageous to mitigate charge recombination undermining their performances. By carrying out first-principle simulations, we proposed a protocol enabling dynamic control of TSCT within a D-A system by use of a bridged azobenzene (BAB), whose configuration is self-adaptive upon photoexcitation. While the Z-isomer of BAB facilitates π-π stacking of D-A pair with designated frontier orbital alignment to ensure TSCT, the E-isomer of BAB breaks that stacking and restrains charge recombination. Further, as a CO₂ molecule is weakly bound to the anionic acceptor, the former goes bent as a result of charge transfer from the latter, suggesting a path for photodriven CO₂ reduction aided by such a donor-switch-acceptor system. Our proof-of-concept study shows the potential of using specific photoswitch to adaptively steer spatial electron transfer within stacked π systems toward photochemical conversion.

Hydrodechlorination of Dichloromethane by a Metal-Free Triazole-Porphyrin Electrocatalyst: Demonstration of Main-Group Element Electrocatalysis*

In this work, the electrocatalytic reduction of dichloromethane (CH₂ Cl₂ ) into hydrocarbons involving a main group element-based molecular triazole-porphyrin electrocatalyst H2PorT8 is reported. This catalyst converted CH₂ Cl₂ in acetonitrile to various hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, and ethylene) with a Faradaic efficiency of 70 % and current density of -13 mA cm^-2 at a potential of -2.2 V vs. Fc/Fc⁺ using water as a proton source. The findings of this study and its mechanistic interpretations demonstrated that H2PorT8 was an efficient and stable catalyst for the hydrodechlorination of CH₂ Cl₂ and that main group catalysts could be potentially used for exploring new catalytic reaction mechanisms.

Improving the Overall Properties of Circularly Polarized Luminescent Materials Through Arene-Perfluoroarene Interactions

A major trade-off in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of pure organic materials is that the large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum ) usually gives rise to the suppression of luminescence efficiency (Φ_PL ). Here, a supramolecular self-assembled system, driven by arene-perfluoroarene (AP) interactions of chiral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and octafluoronaphthalene (OFN), is reported to provide a solution to this problem. Two kinds of chiral PAHs based on pyrene and anthracene could co-assemble with OFN in hybrid solvents to form long-range-ordered AP assemblies. The detailed process of AP interaction driving self-assembly was verified by morphological measurements and fluorescence spectra. The AP assemblies exhibited chirality amplification not only in the excited state but also in the ground state. In addition, the AP assemblies showed an enhanced luminescence efficiency compared with the individual chiral PAHs due to the energy-barrier effect of OFN. The present strategy based on AP interactions could be applied to boost the development of highly efficient CPL-active materials.

Photochemical In Situ Exfoliation of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Visible-Light-Driven CO2 Reduction

Two novel two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs), 2D-M₂ TCPE (M=Co or Ni, TCPE=1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene), which are composed of staggered (4,4)-grid layers based on paddlewheel-shaped dimers, serve as heterogeneous photocatalysts for efficient reduction of CO₂ to CO. During the visible-light-driven catalysis, these structures undergo in situ exfoliation to form nanosheets, which exhibit excellent stability and improved catalytic activity. The exfoliated 2D-M₂ TCPE nanosheets display a high CO evolution rate of 4174 μmol g^-1  h^-1 and high selectivity of 97.3 % for M=Co and Ni, and thus are superior to most reported MOFs. The performance differences and photocatalytic mechanisms have been studied with theoretical calculations and photoelectric experiments. This study provides new insight for the controllable synthesis of effective crystalline photocatalysts based on structural and morphological coregulation.

Organophotoredox Hydrodefluorination of Trifluoromethylarenes with Translational Applicability to Drug Discovery

Molecular editing such as insertion, deletion, and single atom exchange in highly functionalized compounds is an aspirational goal for all chemists. Here, we disclose a photoredox protocol for the replacement of a single fluorine atom with hydrogen in electron-deficient trifluoromethylarenes including complex drug molecules. A robustness screening experiment shows that this reductive defluorination tolerates a range of functional groups and heterocycles commonly found in bioactive molecules. Preliminary studies allude to a catalytic cycle whereby the excited state of the organophotocatalyst is reductively quenched by the hydrogen atom donor, and returned in its original oxidation state by the trifluoromethylarene.

Effect of Alkyl Groups in Pyrene Chromophore on the Mechanical Response of Pyrene-Octafluoronaphthalene Co-Crystals

Changes in the photophysical properties of pyrene (Py)-octafluoronaphthalene (OFN) co-crystals (Py⋅OFN) upon mechanical stimuli are described herein. The Py⋅OFN co-crystal showed a mechano-induced bathochromic shift in emission, and a similar tendency was observed for the 1,3,6,8-tetramethylpyrene-OFN co-crystal. These shifts are due to disruption of the microscopic molecular orientation in the co-crystal, which allows for excimer formation. In sharp contrast to the parent Py⋅OFN and methyl-substituted Py-OFN co-crystals, no mechano-induced bathochromic shift was observed when longer alkyl chains were introduced to the 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-positions of the Py chromophore. This photophysical opposability against mechanical stimuli could be explained by the orthogonally oriented alkyl groups on the Py ring, which existed between two Py cores like pillars. This fixed OFN to maintain the face-to-face alternatively stacked structure of the co-crystal and thus prevented the formation of the Py excimer. The pillar effect demonstrated herein provides a rational design for co-crystalline systems that are photophysically stable against mechanical stresses.

Modulating Electron Transfer in an Organic Reaction via Chemical Group Modification of the Photocatalyst

Tuning electron-transfer (ET) rates from catalysts to substrates is important for modulating photocatalytic organic reactions. In this work, we have taken pyrene-based photocatalysts (Py's) for photocatalytic hydrodefluorination of polyfluoroarenes (FAs) as model systems and conducted a first-principles study on modulating ET rates from Py to FA via the chemical modification of Py with different electron-donating/withdrawing groups (EDGs/EWGs). The computed spatial distributions of frontier Kohn-Sham orbitals suggest that ET is energetically more favorable for Py-EDGs than for Py-EWGs. The estimated ET rates by a simplified Marcus model show that they are appreciably enhanced by EDG substitution and weakened by EWG substitution. Noticeably, the associated Gibbs free-energy change plays a dominant role. Our findings of tuning ET rates for Py-FA complexes via chemical group modifications cast new insight into the rational design of metal-free photocatalysts for organic transformations.

Gallium Hydrides and O/N-Donors as Tunable Systems in C-F Bond Activation

The gallium hydrides (iBu)₂ GaH (1 a), LiGaH₄ (1 b) and Me₃ N⋅GaH₃ (1 c) hydrodefluorinate vinylic and aromatic C-F bonds when O and N donor molecules are present. 1 b exhibits the highest reactivity. Quantitative conversion to the hydrodefluorination (HDF) products could be observed for hexafluoropropene and 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropene, 94 % conversion of pentafluoropyridine and 49 % of octafluorotoluene. Whereas for the HDF with 1 b high conversions are observed when catalytic amounts of O donor molecules are added, for 1 a, the addition of N donor molecules lead to higher conversions. The E/Z selectivity of the HDF of 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropene is donor-dependent. DFT studies show that HDF proceeds in this case via the gallium hydride dimer-donor species and a hydrometallation/elimination sequence. Selectivities are sensitive to the choice of donor, as the right donor can lead to an on/off switching during catalysis, that is, the hydrometallation step is accelerated by the presence of a donor, but the donor dissociates prior to elimination, allowing the inherently more selective donorless gallium systems to determine the selectivity.

Ligation-Enhanced π-Hole···π Interactions Involving Isocyanides: Effect of π-Hole···π Noncovalent Bonding on Conformational Stabilization of Acyclic Diaminocarbene Ligands

The reaction of cis-[PdCl₂(CNXyl)₂] (Xyl = 2,6-Me₂C₆H₃) with the aminoazoles [1 H-imidazol-2-amine (1), 4 H-1,2,4-triazol-3-amine (2), 1 H-tetrazol-5-amine (3), 1 H-benzimidazol-2-amine (4), 1-alkyl-1 H-benzimidazol-2-amines, where alkyl = Me (5), Et (6)] in a 2:1 ratio in the presence of a base in CHCl₃ at RT proceeds regioselectively and leads to the binuclear diaminocarbene complexes [(ClPdCNXyl)₂{μ-C(N-azolyl)N(Xyl)C═NXyl}] (7-12; 73-91%). Compounds 7-12 were characterized by C, H, N elemental analyses, high-resolution ESI⁺-MS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1D (¹H, ¹³C) and 2D (¹H,¹H-COSY, ¹H,¹H-NOESY, ¹H,¹³C-HSQC, ¹H,¹³C-HMBC) NMR spectroscopies, and X-ray diffraction (XRDn). Inspection of the XRDn data and results of the Hirshfeld surface analysis suggest the presence in all six structures of intramolecular π-hole_isocyanide···π_arene interactions between the electrophilic C atom of the isocyanide moiety and the neighboring arene ring. These interactions also result in distortion of the Pd-C≡N-Xyl fragment from the linearity. Results of density functional theory calculations [M06/MWB28 (Pd) and 6-31G* (other atoms) level of theory] for model structures of 7-9 followed by the topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of Bader's theory (QTAIM method) reveal the presence of these weak interactions also in a CHCl₃ solution, and their calculated strength is 1.9-2.2 kcal/mol. The natural bond orbital analysis of 7-9 revealed that π(C-C)Xyl → π*(C-N)isocyanide charge transfer (CT) takes place along with the intramolecular π-hole_isocyanide···π_arene interactions. The observed π(C-C)_Xyl → π*(C-N)_isocyanide CT is due to ligation of the isocyanide to the metal center, whereas in the cases of the uncomplexed p-CNC₆H₄NC and CNXyl species, the effects of CT are negligible. Available CCDC data were processed from the perspective of isocyanide-involving π-hole···π interactions, disclosed the role of metal coordination in the π-hole donor ability of isocyanides, and verified the π-hole_isocyanide···π_arene interaction effect on the stabilization of the in-conformation in metal-bound acyclic diaminocarbenes.

Polyfluoroarylation of oxazolones: access to non-natural fluorinated amino acids

Herein, conditions are provided for the formation and use of the oxazolone enolate for the nucleophilic substitution of highly fluorinated (hetero)arenes, which after unmasking yield highly fluorinated non-natural amino acids and derivatives. In addition, the properties and chemical behavior of this new class of amino acids are explored. The utility is demonstrated in the one pot synthesis of medicinally relevant 2-aminohydantoins.

Heterogeneous Single-Atom Catalyst for Visible-Light-Driven High-Turnover CO2 Reduction: The Role of Electron Transfer

Visible-light-driven conversion of CO₂ into chemical fuels is an intriguing approach to address the energy and environmental challenges. In principle, light harvesting and catalytic reactions can be both optimized by combining the merits of homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalysts; however, the efficiency of charge transfer between light absorbers and catalytic sites is often too low to limit the overall photocatalytic performance. In this communication, it is reported that the single-atom Co sites coordinated on the partially oxidized graphene nanosheets can serve as a highly active and durable heterogeneous catalyst for CO₂ conversion, wherein the graphene bridges homogeneous light absorbers with single-atom catalytic sites for the efficient transfer of photoexcited electrons. As a result, the turnover number for CO production reaches a high value of 678 with an unprecedented turnover frequency of 3.77 min^-1 , superior to those obtained with the state-of-the-art heterogeneous photocatalysts. This work provides fresh insights into the design of catalytic sites toward photocatalytic CO₂ conversion from the angle of single-atom catalysis and highlights the role of charge kinetics in bridging the gap between heterogeneous and homogeneous photocatalysts.

Identifying the potential of pulsed LED irradiation in synthesis: copper-photocatalysed C–F functionalisation

The results of a proof-of-concept study demonstrate for the first time that pulsed LED irradiation enhances the rate of product formation and the yield of a visible light-mediated photoredox-catalysed reaction.
