New Forms of CdSe: Molecular Wires, Gels, and Ordered Mesoporous Assemblies

Aggregation-Induced Asymmetric Charge States of Amino Acids in Supramolecular Nanofibers

Electrostatic interactions contribute critically to the kinetic pathways and thermodynamic outcomes of peptide self-assembly involving one or more than one charged amino acids. While it is well understood in protein folding that those amino acids with acidic/basic side chains could shift their pKas when placed in a hydrophobic microenvironment, to what extent aggregation of monomeric peptide units from the bulk solution could alter their charged status and how this change in pKa values would reciprocally impact their assembly outcomes. Here, we design and analyze two solution systems containing peptide amphiphiles with hydrocarbon chains of different lengths to determine the factor of deprotonation on assembly. Our results suggest that models of supramolecular nanofibers with uniformly distributed, fully charged amino acids are oversimplified. We demonstrate, with molecular dynamics simulations, and validate with experimental results that asymmetric, different protonation states of the peptides lead to distinct nanostructures after self-assembly. The results give estimates on the electrostatic interactions in peptide amphiphiles required for their self-assembly and shed light on modeling molecular assembly systems containing charged amino acids.

Ultrafast Laser Plasmonic Fabrication of Nanocrystals by Molecule Modulation for Photoresponse Multifunctional Structures

Nanotechnology has attracted wide research attention in constructing functional devices, including integrated circuits, transparent electrodes, and flexible actuators. Bottom-up fabrication is an important approach for functional structure manufacture, however, the controllable fabrication of complex architectures for practical applications has long been a challenge. Here, a novel strategy of laser plasmonic fabrication based on glue molecule modulation is proposed that can assemble metal nanocrystals into interconnected pattern networks. The plasmonic response of nanocrystals is adjustable with molecule modulation, which is a benefit for the effective formation of laser-induced localized oscillating electrons. The further decomposition of molecules and the movement of nanocrystal surface atoms can achieve the coalescence of assembled nanocrystals. It demonstrates that complex architectures can be controllably constructed by molecule level modulation. Through molecule-assisted laser plasmonic fabrication, the functional nanocrystals with enhanced photothermal capacity can be used for information encryption and soft machinery. This work expands the knowledge of bottom-up fabrication and provides a method for designing functional nanocrystals for a wide range of applications.

Defect Engineering in Solution-Processed Polycrystalline SnSe Leads to High Thermoelectric Performance

SnSe has emerged as one of the most promising materials for thermoelectric energy conversion due to its extraordinary performance in its single-crystal form and its low-cost constituent elements. However, to achieve an economic impact, the polycrystalline counterpart needs to replicate the performance of the single crystal. Herein, we optimize the thermoelectric performance of polycrystalline SnSe produced by consolidating solution-processed and surface-engineered SnSe particles. In particular, the SnSe particles are coated with CdSe molecular complexes that crystallize during the sintering process, forming CdSe nanoparticles. The presence of CdSe nanoparticles inhibits SnSe grain growth during the consolidation step due to Zener pinning, yielding a material with a high density of grain boundaries. Moreover, the resulting SnSe-CdSe nanocomposites present a large number of defects at different length scales, which significantly reduce the thermal conductivity. The produced SnSe-CdSe nanocomposites exhibit thermoelectric figures of merit up to 2.2 at 786 K, which is among the highest reported for solution-processed SnSe.

Colloidal Inorganic Ligand-Capped Nanocrystals: Fundamentals, Status, and Insights into Advanced Functional Nanodevices

Colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) are intriguing building blocks for assembling various functional thin films and devices. The electronic, optoelectronic, and thermoelectric applications of solution-processed, inorganic ligand (IL)-capped colloidal NCs are especially promising as the performance of related devices can substantially outperform their organic ligand-capped counterparts. This in turn highlights the significance of preparing IL-capped NC dispersions. The replacement of initial bulky and insulating ligands capped on NCs with short and conductive inorganic ones is a critical step in solution-phase ligand exchange for preparing IL-capped NCs. Solution-phase ligand exchange is extremely appealing due to the highly concentrated NC inks with completed ligand exchange and homogeneous ligand coverage on the NC surface. In this review, the state-of-the-art of IL-capped NCs derived from solution-phase inorganic ligand exchange (SPILE) reactions are comprehensively reviewed. First, a general overview of the development and recent advancements of the synthesis of IL-capped colloidal NCs, mechanisms of SPILE, elementary reaction principles, surface chemistry, and advanced characterizations is provided. Second, a series of important factors in the SPILE process are offered, followed by an illustration of how properties of NC dispersions evolve after ILE. Third, surface modifications of perovskite NCs with use of inorganic reagents are overviewed. They are necessary because perovskite NCs cannot withstand polar solvents or undergo SPILE due to their soft ionic nature. Fourth, an overview of the research progresses in utilizing IL-capped NCs for a wide range of applications is presented, including NC synthesis, NC solid and film fabrication techniques, field effect transistors, photodetectors, photovoltaic devices, thermoelectric, and photoelectrocatalytic materials. Finally, the review concludes by outlining the remaining challenges in this field and proposing promising directions to further promote the development of IL-capped NCs in practical application in the future.

Self-assembled hybrid organic-MoS3-nanoparticle catalyst for light energy conversion

We present photocatalytically active, stable polymer-amorphous-MoS3-nanoparticle hybrid structures in aqueous solution. Below 10 nm MoS3 particles in the polymer exhibit an up to 7.5-fold increased photocatalytic activity compared to the neat nanoparticles without any additional photosensitizer. Supramolecular interactions are key in directing the structure formation of the hybrid assembly. The hybrid structures bear potential as novel affordable photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Ligand-Mediated Band Engineering in Bottom-Up Assembled SnTe Nanocomposites for Thermoelectric Energy Conversion

The bottom-up assembly of colloidal nanocrystals is a versatile methodology to produce composite nanomaterials with precisely tuned electronic properties. Beyond the synthetic control over crystal domain size, shape, crystal phase, and composition, solution-processed nanocrystals allow exquisite surface engineering. This provides additional means to modulate the nanomaterial characteristics and particularly its electronic transport properties. For instance, inorganic surface ligands can be used to tune the type and concentration of majority carriers or to modify the electronic band structure. Herein, we report the thermoelectric properties of SnTe nanocomposites obtained from the consolidation of surface-engineered SnTe nanocrystals into macroscopic pellets. A CdSe-based ligand is selected to (i) converge the light and heavy bands through partial Cd alloying and (ii) generate CdSe nanoinclusions as a secondary phase within the SnTe matrix, thereby reducing the thermal conductivity. These SnTe-CdSe nanocomposites possess thermoelectric figures of merit of up to 1.3 at 850 K, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest thermoelectric figure of merit reported for solution-processed SnTe.

Effect of Bond Dispersion on Raman Spectra Shift in II-VI Semiconductor Nanocrystals

To understand Raman spectra shifts of nanocrystals, the top-down phonon confinement approach and the bottom-up quantum chemical approach were developed. The former is suitable for large-sized nanocrystals, and the latter is suitable for clusters containing fewer atoms. Here, we find that a simpler chemical bond model based on the bond dispersion feature can demonstrate Raman spectra shift either in normal size II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals or in atomically precise clusters. According to the bond dispersion model, the Raman spectral line of the II-VI semiconductor nanocrystal (A^IIB^VI) is expressed as the sum of the Lorentz subpeaks of the A^{II( i)}B^{VI( j)} bonds with different coordinates i and j. The calculated Raman lines of CdSe, CdS, CdTe, ZnS, and ZnSe nanocrystals are in agreement with the measured Raman spectral lines. The origin of the red shift and asymmetric broadening of the peak position of nanocrystals may be revealed as well. Results provide insight into how different bonds contribute to different vibrational spectra.

Surface Modification of CdSe Quantum-Dot Floating Gates for Advancing Light-Erasable Organic Field-Effect Transistor Memories

Photoresponsive transistor memories that can be erased using light-only bias are of significant interest owing to their convenient elimination of stored data for information delivery. Herein, we suggest a strategy to improve light-erasable organic transistor memories, which enables fast "photoinduced recovery" under low-intensity light. CdSe quantum dots (QDs) whose surfaces are covered with three different organic molecules are introduced as photoactive floating-gate interlayers in organic transistor memories. We determine that CdSe QDs capped or surface-modified with small molecular ligands lead to efficient hole diffusion from the QDs to the conducting channel during "photoinduced recovery", resulting in faster erasing times. In particular, the memories with QDs surface-modified with fluorinated molecules function as normally-ON type transistor memories with nondestructive operation. These memories exhibit high memory ratios over 10⁵ between OFF and ON bistable current states for over 10 000 s and good dynamic switching behavior with voltage-driven programming processes and light-assisted erasing processes within 1 s. Our study provides a useful guideline for designing photoactive floating-gate materials to achieve desirable properties of light-erasable organic transistor memories.

Colloid-Interface-Assisted Laser Irradiation of Nanocrystals Superlattices to be Scalable Plasmonic Superstructures with Novel Activities

High-efficient charge and energy transfer between nanocrystals (NCs) in a bottom-up assembly are hard to achieve, resulting in an obstacle in application. Instead of the ligands exchange strategies, the advantage of a continuous laser is taken with optimal wavelength and power to irradiate the film-scale NCs superlattices at solid-liquid interfaces. Owing to the Au-based NCs' surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, the gentle laser irradiation leads the Au NCs or Au@CdS core/shell NCs to attach each other with controlled pattern at the interfaces between solid NCs phase and liquid ethanol/ethylene glycol. A continuous wave 532 nm laser (6.68-13.37 W cm^-2 ), to control Au-based superlattices, is used to form the monolayer with uniformly reduced interparticle distance followed by welded superstructures. Considering the size effect to Au NCs' melting, when decreasing the Au NCs size to ≈5 nm, stronger welding nanostructures are obtained with diverse unprecedented shapes which cannot be achieved by normal colloidal synthesis. With the help of facile scale-up and formation at solid-liquid interfaces, and a good connection of crystalline between NCs, the obtained plasmonic superstructured films that could be facilely transferred onto different substrates exhibit broad SPR absorption in the visible and near-infrared regime, enhanced electric conductivities, and wide applications as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrates.
