Abstract
Isotactic polymers have emerged with unique and excellent properties in material sciences. Specific discrimination polymerization provides an ideal pathway to achieve highly isotactic polymers from their racemic monomers, which is of great significance and a challenge in polymeric chemistry. Although an enantioselective catalyst-mediated asymmetric kinetic resolution polymerization (AKRP) process makes it possible, a general and well-defined strategy for catalyst design is still rarely reported. Here, based on a novel dual-ligand strategy, a new type of chiral (BisSalen)Al complex with high enantioselectivity has been described, in which perfect AKRP of racemic phenethylglycolide (Pegl) is achieved for the first time. The more confined asymmetric microenvironment formed by a dual ligand is the key to improve the enantioselectivity of the original catalyst. To illustrate the generality of this strategy, a series of (BisSalen)Al complexes with homo- or heterodual ligands were designed for the AKRP of Pegl.

Abstract
Here, we prepared a series of thiourea-based organocatalysts 1-7 by combining two stereogenic elements: binaphthyl-amine and cyclohexyl diamine moieties. Catalyst (R,S)-1 facilitated a stereoselective polymerization of rac-LA to afford iso-enriched PDLA with Pm of 0.96 while its enantiomer (S,R)-1 produced PLLA with Pm of 0.96. These iso-enriched PLA contributed to forming a stereocomplexed PLA with a significantly increased Tm of 196 °C.

Abstract
Precisely controlling macromolecular stereochemistry and sequences is a powerful strategy for manipulating polymer properties. Controlled synthetic routes to prepare degradable polyester, polycarbonate, and polyether are of recent interest due to the need for sustainable materials as alternatives to petrochemical-based polyolefins. Enantioselective ring-opening polymerization and ring-opening copolymerization of racemic monomers offer access to stereoregular polymers, specifically enantiopure polymers that form stereocomplexes with improved physicochemical and mechanical properties. Here, we highlight the state-of-the-art of this polymerization chemistry that can produce microstructure-defined polymers. In particular, the structures and performances of various homogeneous enantioselective catalysts are presented. Trends and future challenges of such chemistry are discussed.

Abstract
Stereochemical control during polymerization is a key strategy of polymer chemistry to achieve semicrystalline engineered plastics. The stereoselective ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic lactide (rac-LA), which can lead to highly isotactic polylactide (PLA), is one of the emblematic examples in this area. Surprisingly, stereoselective ROP of rac-LA employing chiral organocatalysts has been under-leveraged. Here we show that a commercially available chiral thiourea (TU1), or its urea homologue (U1), can be used in conjunction with an appropriately selected N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) to trigger the stereoselective ROP of rac-LA at room temperature in toluene. Both a high organic catalysis activity (>90% monomer conversion in 5-9 h) and a high stereoselectivity (probability of formation of meso dyads, Pm, in the range 0.82-0.93) can be achieved by thus pairing a NHC and a chiral amino(thio)urea. The less sterically hindered and the more basic NHC, that is, a NHC bearing tert-butyl substituents (NHCtBu), provides the highest stereoselectivity when employed in conjunction with the chiral TU1 or U1. This asymmetric organic catalysis strategy, as applied here in polymerization chemistry, further expands the field of possibilities to achieve bioplastics with adapted thermomechanical properties.

Abstract
Organocatalysis has evolved into an effective complement to metal‐ or enzyme‐based catalysis in polymerization, polymer functionalization, and depolymerization. The ease of removal and greater sustainability of organocatalysts relative to transition‐metal‐based ones has spurred development in specialty applications, e.g., medical devices, drug delivery, optoelectronics. Despite this, the use of organocatalysis and other organomediated reactions in polymer chemistry is still rapidly developing, and we envisage their rapidly growing application in nascent areas such as controlled radical polymerization, additive manufacturing, and chemical recycling in the coming years. In this Review, we describe ten trending areas where we anticipate paradigm shifts resulting from novel organocatalysts and other transition‐metal‐free conditions. We highlight opportunities and challenges and detail how new discoveries could lead to previously inaccessible functional materials and a potentially circular plastics economy.

Abstract
The enantioselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between imino esters and (Z)-nitroalkenes bearing a masked amino group in the β-position was studied using several chiral ligands and silver salts. The optimized reaction conditions were directly applied to the study of the scope of the reaction. The determination of the absolute configuration was evaluated using NMR experiments and electronic circular dichroism (ECD). The reduction and hydrolysis of both groups was performed to generate in an excellent enantiomeric ratio the corresponding cis-2,3-diaminoprolinate.

Abstract
This review highlights recent developments in the field of biodegradable polymeric materials intended to replace non-degradable conventional plastics, focusing on studies from the last ten years involving the stereoselective ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters. This encompasses exciting advances in both catalyst design and monomer scope. Notably, the last decade has seen the emergence of metal-free stereocontrolled ROP for instance, as well as the synthesis and stereocontrolled polymerization of new types of chiral monomers. This study will emphasize recent stereoselective polymerization catalysts and chiral monomers and will focus on stereocontrol quantification, the mechanisms of stereocontrol and their differentiation if reported and studied for a specific catalyst system.

Abstract
Different densely substituted L‐ and D‐proline esters were prepared by asymmetric (3+2) cycloaddition reactions catalyzed by conveniently selected EhuPhos chiral ligands. The γ‐nitro‐2‐alkoxycarbonyl pyrrolidines thus obtained in either their endo or exo forms were functionalized and coupled to yield the corresponding γ‐dipeptides. The catalytic properties of these latter dimers were examined using aldol and conjugate additions as case studies. When aldol reactions were analyzed, an additive behavior in terms of stereocontrol was observed on going from the monomers to the dimers. In contrast, in the case of the conjugate additions between ketones and nitroalkenes, the monomers did not catalyze this reaction, whereas the different γ‐dipeptides promoted the formation of the corresponding Michael adducts. Therefore, in this latter case emergent catalytic properties were observed for these novel γ‐dipeptides based on unnatural proline derivatives. Under certain conditions stoichiometric amounts of ketone, acid and nitroalkene), formation of N‐acyloxy‐2‐oxooctahydro‐1H‐indoles was observed.

Abstract
Control of stereoregularity is inherent to precision polymerization chemistry for the development of functional materials. A prototypal example of this strategy is the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic lactide (rac-LA), a bio-sourced monomer. Despite significant advances in organocatalysis, stereoselective ROP of rac-LA employing chiral organocatalysts remains unexplored. Here we tackle that challenge by resorting to Takemoto's catalyst, a chiral aminothiourea, in the presence of a phosphazene base. This chiral binary organocatalytic system allows for fast, chemo- and stereoselective ROP of rac-LA at room temperature, yielding highly isotactic, semi-crystalline and metal-free polylactide, with a melting temperature as high as 187 °C.

Abstract
Catalysts based on cobalt amino acids and 2,2 bipyridine (bipy) present an attractive and cost-effective alternative as ring opening polymerization catalysts, yet this system remains underexplored despite the advantageous coordination properties of amino acids and bipy as ligands combined with the variety of accessible oxidation states and coordination geometries of cobalt. Here, metal complexes of type [Co(aa)2(bipy)] with amino acids (aa: glycine, leucine and threonine) as ligands are reported. The complexes were characterized spectroscopically (IR, UV-vis and 1H, 13C NMR for diamagnetic species), and by MS spectrometry and elemental analysis. The data reveal that the 2,2 bipyridine acts as a neutral bidentate donor coordinating to the metal ion through two nitrogen atoms and the amino acid acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the carboxylate and amino group forming a stable five membered ring and a pseudo-octahedral geometry around the Co center. The activity of the complexes for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide is presented. The complexes are effective initiators for the ROP of rac-lactide (Kobs = 9.05 × 10−4 s−1) at 100 : 1 [rac-lactide] : [catalyst] 1 M overall concentration of lactide in toluene at 403 K. Catalysts based on Co, amino acids, and 2,2-bipyridine present an attractive and economic alternative in ring opening polymerization, and possess advantageous ligand coordination properties combined with a variety of accessible oxidation states and coordination geometries.![]()

Abstract
Chiral 4,8-diphenyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (DiPh-TBD) was synthesized and applied to a ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide (rac-LA). The chiral DiPh-TBD promoted the synthesis of isotactic enriched polylactides (PLAs) with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distributions under mild, metal-free conditions. When the [rac-LA]/[Cat.] ratio was 100/1, full monomer conversion was achieved within only 1 min and a moderate probability of 0.67 meso dyads (Pm) was obtained at room temperature. A chain-end control mechanism (CEC) was found to be responsible for the isoselectivity based on the homodecoupled 1H NMR spectrum, the chiral HPLC measurement, and kinetic studies.

Abstract
1,5,7-Triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) polymerizes rac-lactide (rac-LA) to form highly isotactic polylactide (PLA) with a Pm = 0.88, while meso-LA yields heterotactic PLA (Pm ~ 0.8) at −75 °C. The stereocontrol of the cryogenic-based ring-opening polymerization comes from a perfect imbrication of both chiral LA and the propagating chiral end-group interacting with the achiral TBD catalyst.

Abstract
The intestinal epithelium is the main barrier for nanocarriers to orally deliver poorly water-soluble and absorbed agents. To further improve the transmembrane transport efficiency of polymeric micelles, intestinal oligopeptide transporter PepT1-targeted polymeric micelles were fabricated by Gly-Sar-conjugated poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(d,l-lactic acid). The functionalized polymeric micelles with about 40 nm diameter, uniform spherical morphology and favorable cytocompatibility with Caco-2 cells were demonstrated to distinctly enhance the cellular uptake and transmembrane transport of the loaded agents. The results of intestinal absorption strongly evidenced the higher accumulation of the micelles inside the epithelial cells, at the apical and basolateral sides of the epithelium within the villi in mice. Furthermore, the interaction of Gly-Sar decorated polymeric micelles with PepT1 was explored to promote the internalization of the micelles through fluorescence immunoassay, and the PepT1 level on the membrane of Caco-2 cells treated with the micelles appeared to change in a distinctly time-dependent manner. Both clathrin- and caveolae-mediated pathways were involved in the transcellular transport for undecorated polymeric micelles, while the transcellular transport pathway for Gly-Sar decorated ones was changed to be mainly mediated by clathrin and lipid rafts. The colocalization of Gly-Sar decorated micelles with the organelles observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy indicated that late endosomes, lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus appeared to participate in the intracellular trafficking progression of the micelles. These results suggested that PepT1-targeted polymeric micelles might have a strong potential to greatly promote the oral absorption of poorly water-soluble and absorbed agents.

Abstract
A novel stereocomplex poly(lactic acid) amphiphilic conetwork gel with temperature and pH dual sensitivity was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and free radical copolymerization. The chemical structure and composition of hydrogel were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The temperature and pH sensitivity and good amphiphilicity of hydrogel were studied using digital photos, the swelling ratios and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The thermal stability and mechanical properties of hydrogel were studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and dynamic viscoelastic spectrometer. The results indicated that the hydrogel has amphiphilicity, temperature and pH sensitivity, good thermal stability and mechanical strength.

Abstract
Organocatalysis provides a powerful alternative in many polymerization reactions and nowadays has become a valuable tool for polymer chemists. The key reason for transitioning to organocatalysts is not only their ability to be effectively removed from resultant products, but also, their potential to exquisitely control the catalytic activity and selectivity of the polymerization processes. While organocatalysis has been largely implemented in research laboratories, its use in industrial bulk polymerization processes is still scarce. This is mostly due to the poor thermal stability of organocatalysts at temperatures (150-250 °C) usually employed for industrial polymerizations. In this Viewpoint, we highlight the recent advances of the use of acid-base ionic mixtures in high temperatures bulk polymerization reactions. First, we will focus on the synthesis, characterization, difunctional catalytic properties, and thermal stability of these acid-base mixtures. Afterward, we will emphasize the recent literature describing their use in chain growth and step-growth polymerizations. Moreover, the highlight will also draw attention to recent efforts in the use of these acid-base mixtures in polymer recycling by means of depolymerization.

Abstract
Polylactide (PLA) is a fully biodegradable and recyclable plastic, produced from a bio-derived monomer: it is a circular economy plastic. Its properties depend upon its stereochemistry and isotactic PLA shows superior thermal-mechanical performances. Here, a new means to control tacticity by exploiting rotaxane conformational dynamism is described. Dynamic achiral [2]rotaxanes can show high isoselectivity (Pi =0.8, 298 K) without requiring any chiral additives and enchain by a chain end control mechanism. The organocatalytic dynamic stereoselectivity is likely applicable to other small-molecule and polymerization catalyses.

Abstract
The organocatalytic properties of unnatural α-amino acids are reviewed. Post-translational derivatives of natural α-amino acids include 4-hydroxy-l-proline and 4-amino-l-proline scaffolds, and also proline homologues. The activity of synthetic unnatural α-amino acid-based organocatalysts, such as β-alkyl alanines, alanine-based phosphines, and tert-leucine derivatives, are reviewed herein. The organocatalytic properties of unnatural monocyclic, bicyclic, and tricyclic proline derivatives are also reviewed. Several families of these organocatalysts permit the efficient and stereoselective synthesis of complex natural products. Most of the reviewed organocatalysts accelerate the reported reactions through covalent interactions that raise the HOMO (enamine intermediates) or lower the LUMO (iminium intermediates).

Abstract
Despite significant advances in organocatalysis, stereoselective polymerization reactions utilizing chiral organocatalysts have received very little attention, and much about the underlying mechanisms remains unknown. Here, we report that both commercially available (R,R)- and (S,S)-enantiomers of chiral thiourea-amine Takemoto's organocatalysts promote efficient control and high isoselectivity at room temperature of the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic lactide by kinetic resolution, yielding highly isotactic, semicrystalline and metal-free polylactide (PLA). Kinetic investigations and combined analyses of the resulting PLAs have allowed the stereocontrol mechanism, which eventually involves both enantiomorphic site control and chain-end control, to be determined. Moreover, epimerization of rac-LA to meso-LA is identified as being responsible for the introduction of some stereoerrors during the ROP process.

Abstract
The (3+2) cycloaddition between azomethine ylides and alkenes is an efficient, convergent and stereocontrolled method for the synthesis of unnatural pyrrolidine and proline scaffolds. In this review, the application of this reaction to the synthesis of enantiopure organometallic ligands for asymmetric catalysis is presented first. These new EhuPhos ligands can participate in a second generation of 1,3-dipolar reactions that generate an offspring of unnatural proline derivatives that behave as efficient organocatalysts. These densely substituted unnatural l-proline derivatives exhibit distinct features, different to those described for natural l-proline and its derivatives. Finally, several examples of biologically active proline derivatives obtained by means of (3+2) cycloadditions involving azomethine ylides are presented. These applications show the character of privileged structures of these polysubstituted pyrrolidine rings.

Abstract
Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters/lactones by efficient catalysts is a powerful method for synthesis of biodegradable and biocompatible polyesters with well-defined structures. To develop catalytic systems that are fast, selective and controlled is a persistent effort of chemists. In this contribution, we report a binary urea/alkoxide catalytic system that could catalyze ROP of rac-LA in a fast (over 90% conversion within 1-2 min), stereoselective (P i up to 0.93) and controlled manner, indicated by narrow MW distributions, linear relationship between the monomer conversions and M ns, end-group fidelity, and chain extension experiments. Remarkably, the catalytic system described here is simple, easily prepared, and structurally tunable and thus has versatile catalytic performances.
