Decasilahexahydrotriquinacene and Decasilaisotwistane: σ Conjugation on a Bowl Surface

Confined Lewis Pairs: Investigation of the X- →Si20 Interaction in Halogen-Encapsulating Silafulleranes

A joint theoretical and experimental study on 32 endohedral silafullerane derivatives [X@Si20 Y20 ]- (X=F-I; Y=F-I, H, Me, Et) andT h ${T_h }$ -[Cl@Si20 H12 Y8 ]- (Y=F-I) is presented. First, we evaluated the structure-determining template effect of Cl- in a systematic series of concave silapolyquinane model systems. Second, we investigated the X- →Si20 interaction energy (E int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ ) as a function of X- and Y and found the largestE int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ values for electron-withdrawing exohedral substituents Y. Given that X- ions can be considered as Lewis bases and empty Si20 Y20 clusters as Lewis acids, we classify our inseparable host-guest complexes [X@Si20 Y20 ]- as "confined Lewis pairs". Third, 35 Cl NMR spectroscopy proved to be highly diagnostic for an experimental assessment of the Cl- →Si20 interaction as the paramagnetic shielding and, in turn, δ ${\delta }$ (35 Cl) of the endohedral Cl- ion correlate inversely withE int ${E_{{\rm{int}}} }$ . Finally, we disclose the synthesis of [PPN][Cl@Si20 Y20 ] (Y=Me, Et, Br) and provide a thorough characterization of these new silafulleranes.

An Electrochemical Strategy to Synthesize Disilanes and Oligosilanes from Chlorosilanes

Silanes are important compounds in industrial and synthetic chemistry. Here, we develop a general approach for the synthesis of disilanes as well as linear and cyclic oligosilanes via the reductive activation of readily available chlorosilanes. The efficient and selective generation of silyl anion intermediates, which are arduous to achieve by other means, allows for the synthesis of various novel oligosilanes by heterocoupling. In particular, this work presents a modular synthesis for a variety of functionalized cyclosilanes, which may give rise to materials with distinct properties from linear silanes but remain challenging synthetic targets. In comparison to the traditional Wurtz coupling, our method features milder conditions and improved chemoselectivity, broadening the functional groups that are compatible in oligosilane preparation. Computational studies support a mechanism whereby differential activation of sterically and electronically distinct chlorosilanes are achieved in an electrochemically driven radical-polar crossover mechanism.

Regioselective Derivatization of Silylated [20]Silafulleranes

Silafulleranes with endohedral Cl^- ions are a unique, scarcely explored class of structurally well-defined silicon clusters and host-guest complexes. Herein, we report regioselective derivatization reactions on the siladodecahedrane [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiCl₃)₁₂Cl₈] ([nBu₄N][1]), which has its cluster surface decorated with 12 SiCl₃ and 8 Cl substituents in perfect T_h symmetry. The room-temperature reaction of [nBu₄N][1] with excess iBu₂AlH in ortho-difluorobenzene (oDFB) furnishes perhydrogenated [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂H₈] ([nBu₄N][2]) in 50% yield; the non-pyrophoric [2]^- is the largest structurally authenticated (by X-ray diffraction) hydridosilane known to date. A simple switch from pure oDFB to an oDFB/Et₂O solvent mixture suppresses core hydrogenation and results in the formation of [nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂Cl₈] ([nBu₄N][3]). In addition to the exhaustive Cl/H exchange at all 44 Si-Cl bonds of [1]^- and the regioselective 36-fold silyl group hydrogenation, we achieved the simultaneous introduction of Me substituents at all 8 SiCl vertices along with the conversion of all 12 SiCl₃ to SiH₃ groups by treating [nBu₄N][1] with Me₂AlH/Me₃Al in oDFB ([nBu₄N][Cl@Si₂₀(SiH₃)₁₂Me₈], [nBu₄N][4]; 73%). Quantum-chemical free-energy calculations find an S_N2-Si-type hydrogenation of the exohedral SiCl₃ moieties in [1]^- (trigonal-bipyramidal intermediate) slightly preferred over metathesis-like S_Ni-Si substitutions (four-membered transition state). Cage hydrogenation likely occurs via S_Ni-Si processes. The experimentally demonstrated influence of an Et₂O co-solvent, which drastically increases the respective reaction barriers, is attributed to the increased stability of the resulting iBu₂AlH-OEt₂ adduct and its higher steric bulk compared to free iBu₂AlH.

Molecular Silicon Clusters

The continuously decreasing size of device features in microelectronics draws growing attention to the structuring of silicon at the molecular level with powerful tools provided by synthetic chemistry. Silicon clusters are of particular importance in this regard not only as potential precursors for silicon deposition but also as well-defined model systems for bulk and surfaces of silicon at the nanoscale as well as possible starting points for future construction of molecularly precise device structures. This review aims to give a comprehensive overview about the state of the art in the synthesis of molecular silicon clusters, which are grouped into (1) electron-precise saturated clusters, (2) soluble polyhedral Zintl anions, and (3) unsaturated silicon clusters, the so-called siliconoids. Particular attention is paid to functionalization as it is generally considered a necessary prerequisite for the design and construction of more extended systems. The interrelations between the three different classes of molecular silicon clusters, e.g., arising from the introduction of negatively charged functional groups, are highlighted on grounds of NMR properties and computed electronic structures.

[Cl@Si20H20]-: Parent Siladodecahedrane with Endohedral Chloride Ion

Fullerenes and diamondoids are at the core of nanoscience. Comparable monodisperse silicon analogues are scarce. Herein, we report the synthesis of the parent siladodecahedrane, which represents the largest Platonic solid. It shares its pattern of pentagonal faces with the smallest fullerene, C₂₀, and its saturated, H-terminated skeleton with diamondoids. Similar to endofullerenes, the silicon cage encapsulates a chloride ion ([Cl@Si₂₀H₂₀]^-); similar to diamondoids, its Si-H termini offer a wealth of opportunities for further functionalization. Mere treatment with chloromethanes leads to the perchlorinated cluster [Cl@Si₂₀Cl₂₀]^-. Both compounds were characterized by mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. The experimentally determined ³⁵Cl resonances of the endohedral chloride ions are particularly diagnostic to probe the Cl^- → Si₂₀ interaction strength as a function of the different surface substituents, as we have proven by high-level computational analyses.

Optical properties of organosilicon compounds containing sigma-electron delocalization by quasiparticle self-consistent GW calculations

We investigate theoretically the electronic and optical absorption properties of two sub-classes of oligosilanes: (i) Si(CH₃)₄, Si₄(CH₃)₈, and Si₈(CH₃)₈ that contain Si dot, ring and cage, respectively, and exhibit typical SiC and SiSi bonds; and (ii) persilastaffanes Si₇H₆(CH₃)₆ and Si₁₂H₆(CH₃)₁₂, which contain extended delocalized σ-electrons in SiSi bonds over three-dimensional Si frameworks. Our modeling is performed within the GW approach up to the partially self-consistent GW₀ approximation, which is more adequate for reliably predicting the optical band gaps of materials. We examine how the optical properties of these organosilicon compounds depend on their size, geometric features, and Si/C composition. Our results indicate that the present methodology offers a viable way of describing the optical excitations of tailored functional Si-C-based clusters and molecular optical tags with potential use as efficient light absorbers/emitters in molecular optical devices.

Stereocontrolled Syntheses of Functionalized cis- and trans-Siladecalins

We report the synthesis of both diastereomers of an all-silicon analog of decalin. Carbocyclic decalin is a ubiquitous bicyclic structural motif. The siladecalin synthesis provides materials functionalized with either Si-Ph or Si-H groups, versatile entry points for further chemical diversification. The synthesis of silicon-stereogenic silanes is significantly less precedented than the synthesis of asymmetric carbon centers, and strategies for control of relative stereochemistry in oligosilanes are hardly described. This study offers insights of potential generality, such as the epimerization of the cis-isomer to the thermodynamically downhill trans-isomer via a hypothesized pentavalent intermediate. Decalin is a classic example in the conformational analysis of organic ring systems, and the carbocyclic diastereomers have highly divergent conformational profiles. Like the carbocycle, we observe different conformational properties in cis- and trans-siladecalins with consequences for NMR spectroscopy, optical properties, and vibrational spectroscopy. This study showcases the utility of targeted synthesis for preparing complex and functionalized polycyclic silanes.

Silicon chemistry in zero to three dimensions: from dichlorosilylene to silafullerane

As one of the simplest examples of functionalized Si(ii) species, the SiCl₂/[SiCl₃]⁻ system is not only fundamentally interesting, but also an important starting point for the assembly of oligosilane chains, rings, and clusters.
