Toward Rational Design of Oxide-Supported Single-Atom Catalysts: Atomic Dispersion of Gold on Ceria

Iridium single-atoms anchored on a TiO2 support as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) play a vital role in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) owing to the highly desirable atom efficiency and the minimal amount of precious metals. Herein, we use TiO2 nanosheets to anchor stable atomically dispersed iridium (Ir) to be used as a catalyst (Ir@TiO2) for the HER. The atomic dispersion of Ir on the TiO2 substrate is confirmed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and it is anchored by numerous surface functional groups on abundantly exposed basal planes in TiO2. In acidic media, the Ir@TiO2 catalyst (1.35 wt% Ir) shows a low overpotential (41 mV at 10 mA cm-2), a small Tafel slope of 42 mV dec-1, and a decent durability for 1000 cycles of the HER with the polarization curve having only a 1 mV shift, which are comparable with those of a commercial Pt/C catalyst with 20 wt% Pt. This work paves a way to design Ir atomically anchored catalysts with low cost and high activity.

Carbon-based single-atom catalysts derived from biomass: Fabrication and application

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with active metals dispersed atomically have shown great potential in heterogeneous catalysis due to the high atomic utilization and superior selectivity/stability. Synthesis of SACs using carbon-neutral biomass and its components as the feedstocks provides a promising strategy to realize the sustainable and cost-effective SACs preparation as well as the valorization of underused biomass resources. Herein, we begin by describing the general background and status quo of carbon-based SACs derived from biomass. A detailed enumeration of the common biomass feedstocks (e.g., lignin, cellulose, chitosan, etc.) for the SACs preparation is then offered. The interactions between metal atoms and biomass-derived carbon carriers are summarized to give general rules on how to stabilize the atomic metal centers and rationalize porous carbon structures. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of catalysts in diverse domains (e.g., chemocatalysis, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, etc.) is comprehensively introduced. The structure-property relationships and the underlying catalytic mechanisms are also addressed, including the influences of metal sites on the activity and stability, and the impact of the unique structure of single-atom centers modulated by metal/biomass feedstocks interactions on catalytic activity and selectivity. Finally, we end this review with a look into the remaining challenges and future perspectives of biomass-based SACs. We expect to shed some light on the forthcoming research of carbon-based SACs derived from biomass, manifestly stimulating the development in this emerging research area.

Unveiling the Function of Oxygen Vacancy on Facet-Dependent CeO2 for the Catalytic Destruction of Monochloromethane: Guidance for Industrial Catalyst Design

Secondary pollution remains a critical challenge for the catalytic destruction of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). By employing experimental studies and theoretical calculations, we provide valuable insights into the catalytic behaviors exhibited by ceria rods, cubes, and octahedra for monochloromethane (MCM) destruction, shedding light on the elementary reactions over facet-dependent CeO2. Our findings demonstrate that CeO2 nanorods with the (110) facet exhibit the best performance in MCM destruction, and the role of vacancies is mainly to form a longer distance (4.63 Å) of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) compared to the stoichiometric surface, thereby enhancing the activation of MCM molecules. Subsequent molecular orbital analysis showed that the adsorption of MCM mainly transferred electrons from the 3σ and 4π* orbitals to the Ce 4f orbitals, and the activation was mainly caused by weakening of the 3σ bonding orbitals. Furthermore, isotopic experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the hydrogen chloride generated is mainly derived from methyl in MCM rather than from water, and the primary function of water is to form excess saturated H on the surface, facilitating the desorption of generated hydrogen chloride.

Strategies Toward High Selectivity, Activity, and Stability of Single-Atom Catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold immense promise in facilitating the rational use of metal resources and achieving atomic economy due to their exceptional atom-utilization efficiency and distinct characteristics. Despite the growing interest in SACs, only limited reviews have holistically summarized their advancements centering on performance metrics. In this review, first, a thorough overview on the research progress in SACs is presented from a performance perspective and the strategies, advancements, and intriguing approaches employed to enhance the critical attributes in SACs are discussed. Subsequently, a comprehensive summary and critical analysis of the electrochemical applications of SACs are provided, with a particular focus on their efficacy in the oxygen reduction reaction , oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction , CO2 reduction reaction, and N2 reduction reaction . Finally, the outline future research directions on SACs by concentrating on performance-driven investigation, where potential areas for improvement are identified and promising avenues for further study are highlighted, addressing challenges to unlock the full potential of SACs as high-performance catalysts.

Understanding and controlling the formation of single-atom site from supported Cu10 cluster by tuning CeO2 reducibility: Theoretical insight into the Gd-doping effect on electronic metal-support interaction

Controlling the formation of single-atom (SA) sites from supported metal clusters is an important and interesting issue to effectively improve the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts. For extensively studied CO oxidation over metal/CeO2 systems, the SA formation and stabilization under reaction conditions is generally attributed to CO adsorption, however, the pivotal role played by the reducible CeO2 support and the underlying electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) are not yet fully understood. Based on a ceria-supported Cu10 catalyst model, we performed density functional theory calculations to investigate the intrinsic SA formation mechanism and discussed the synergistic effect of Gd-doped CeO2 and CO adsorption on the SA formation. The CeO2 reducibility is tuned with doped Gd content ranging from 12.5 % ∼ 25 %. Based on ab initio thermodynamic and ab initio molecular dynamics, the critical condition for SA formation was identified as 21.875 % Gd-doped CeO2 with CO-saturated adsorption on Cu10. Electronic analysis revealed that the open-shell lattice Oδ- (δ < 2) generated by Gd doping facilitates the charge transfer from the bottom-corner Cu (Cubc) to CeO2. The CO-saturated adsorption further promotes this charge transfer process and enhances the EMSI between Cubc and CeO2, leading to the disintegration of Cubc from Cu10 and subsequent formation of the active SA site.

Suppressing Metal Leaching and Sintering in Hydroformylation Reaction by Modulating the Coordination of Rh Single Atoms with Reactants

Hydroformylation reaction is one of the largest homogeneously catalyzed industrial processes yet suffers from difficulty and high cost in catalyst separation and recovery. Heterogeneous single-atom catalysts (SACs), on the other hand, have emerged as a promising alternative due to their high initial activity and reasonable regioselectivity. Nevertheless, the stability of SACs against metal aggregation and leaching during the reaction has rarely been addressed. Herein, we elucidate the mechanism of Rh aggregation and leaching by investigating the structural evolution of Rh1@silicalite-1 SAC in response to different adsorbates (CO, H2, alkene, and aldehydes) by using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, X-ray adsorption fine structure, and scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques and kinetic studies. It is discovered that the aggregation and leaching of Rh are induced by the strong adsorption of CO and aldehydes on Rh, as well as the reduction of Rh3+ by CO/H2 which weakens the binding of Rh with support. In contrast, alkene effectively counteracts this effect by the competitive adsorption on Rh atoms with CO/aldehyde, and the disintegration of Rh clusters. Based on these results, we propose a strategy to conduct the reaction under conditions of high alkene concentration, which proves to be able to stabilize Rh single atom against aggregation and/or leaching for more than 100 h time-on-stream.

CO Oxidation Promoted by NO Adsorption on RhMn2O3- Cluster Anions

CO oxidation represents an important model reaction in the gas phase to provide a clear structure-reactivity relationship in related heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, in combination with mass spectrometry experiments and quantum-chemical calculations, we identified that the RhMn2O3- cluster cannot oxidize CO into gas-phase CO2 at room temperature, while the NO preadsorbed products RhMn2O3-[(NO)1,2] are highly reactive in CO oxidation. This discovery is helpful to get a fundamental understanding on the reaction behavior in real-world three-way catalytic conditions where different kinds of reactants coexist. Theoretical calculations were performed to rationalize the crucial roles of preadsorbed NO where the strongly attached NO on the Rh atom can greatly stabilize the products RhMn2O2-[(NO)1,2] during CO oxidation and at the same time works together with the Rh atom to store electrons that stay originally in the attached CO2- unit. The leading result is that the desorption of CO2, which is the rate-determining step of CO oxidation by RhMn2O3-, can be greatly facilitated on the reactions of RhMn2O3-[(NO)1,2] with CO.

Surface-Phosphorylated Ceria for Chlorine-Tolerance Catalysis

An improved fundamental understanding of active site structures can unlock opportunities for catalysis from conceptual design to industrial practice. Herein, we present the computational discovery and experimental demonstration of a highly active surface-phosphorylated ceria catalyst that exhibits robust chlorine tolerance for catalysis. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations and in situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (in situ NAP-XPS) identified a predominantly HPO4 active structure on CeO2(110) and CeO2(111) facets at room temperature. Importantly, further elevating the temperature led to a unique hydrogen (H) atom hopping between coordinatively unsaturated oxygen and the adjacent P═O group of HPO4. Such a mobile H on the catalyst surface can effectively quench the chlorine radicals (Cl•) via an orientated reaction analogous to hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), enabling the surface-phosphorylated CeO2-supported monolithic catalyst to exhibit both expected activity and stability for over 68 days during a pilot test, catalyzing the destruction of a complex chlorinated volatile organic compound industrial off-gas.

Facile preparation of small-sized gold nanoparticle decorated silica nanocomposites and their morphological changes in catalytic reactions

Due to the unique physicochemical properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated silica nanostructures (SiO2@AuNPs), they show great potential for applications in catalysis, biosensing, optical devices and medicine. It is essential to explore the catalytic effect of SiO2@AuNPs and the understanding of the essential process of catalytic reactions. We have prepared SiO2@AuNPs by loading small-sized AuNPs on surface-modified silica nanospheres. SiO2@AuNPs was used as a catalyst for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of excess NaBH4, and the results showed that with the increase of the amount of catalyst from 30 to 100μl, the corresponding rate constantKappwas increased from 6.44 × 10-3to 1.45 × 10-2s-1, and its TOF was as high as 1.326 × 103h-1, and the catalytic rate could still be maintained at 87% after five cycles. By analyzing the morphology and size of the SiO2supported AuNPs before and after the catalytic reaction, it can be seen that the atoms on the surface of small-sized AuNPs supported by silica have migrated during the catalytic process, which subsequently affects the catalytic efficiency of the structure. This study proves the good catalytic effect of SiO2@AuNPs structure and lays the foundation for its wider application.

Intermetallic Nanocrystals for Fuel-Cells-Based Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis underpins the renewable electrochemical conversions for sustainability, which further replies on metallic nanocrystals as vital electrocatalysts. Intermetallic nanocrystals have been known to show distinct properties compared to their disordered counterparts, and been long explored for functional improvements. Tremendous progresses have been made in the past few years, with notable trend of more precise engineering down to an atomic level and the investigation transferring into more practical membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which motivates this timely review. After addressing the basic thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals, we discuss classic and latest synthetic strategies that enable not only the formation of intermetallic phase but also the rational control of other catalysis-determinant structural parameters, such as size and morphology. We also demonstrate the emerging intermetallic nanomaterials for potentially further advancement in energy electrocatalysis. Then, we discuss the state-of-the-art characterizations and representative intermetallic electrocatalysts with emphasis on oxygen reduction reaction evaluated in a MEA setup. We summarize this review by laying out existing challenges and offering perspective on future research directions toward practicing intermetallic electrocatalysts for energy conversions.

Advances in heterogeneous single-cluster catalysis

Heterogeneous single-cluster catalysts (SCCs) comprising atomically precise and isolated metal clusters stabilized on appropriately chosen supports offer exciting prospects for enabling novel chemical reactions owing to their broad structural diversity with unparalled opportunities for engineering their properties. Although the pioneering work revealed intriguing performance trends of size-selected metal clusters deposited on supports, synthetic and analytical challenges hindered a thorough understanding of surface chemistry under realistic conditions. This Review underscores the importance of considering the cluster environment in SCCs, encompassing the development of robust metal-support interactions, precise control over the ligand sphere, the influence of reaction media and dynamic behaviour, to uncover new reactivities. Through examples, we illustrate the criticality of tailoring the entire catalytic ensemble in SCCs to achieve stable and selective performance with practically relevant metal coverages. This expansion in application scope transcends from model reactions to complex and technically relevant reactions. Furthermore, we provide a perspective on the opportunities and future directions for SCC design within this rapidly evolving field.

Decorating Mg12O12 Nanocage with Late First-Row Transition Metals To Act as Single-Atom Catalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

In the pursuit of sustainable clean energy sources, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attained significant interest from the scientific community. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are among the most promising candidates for future electrocatalysis because they possess high thermal stability, effective electrical conductivity, and excellent percentage atom utilization. In the present study, the applicability of late first-row transition metals (Fe-Zn) decorated on the magnesium oxide nanocage (TM@Mg12O12) as SACs for the HER has been studied, via density functional theory. The late first-row transition metals have been chosen as they have high abundance and are relatively low-cost. Among the studied systems, results show that the Fe@Mg12O12 SAC is the best candidate for catalyzing the HER reaction as it exhibits the lowest activation barrier for HER. Moreover, Fe@Mg12O12 shows high stability (Eint = -1.64 eV), which is essential in designing SACs to prevent aggregation of the metal. Furthermore, the results of the electronic properties' analysis showed that the HOMO-LUMO gap of the nanocage is decreased significantly upon doping of Fe (from 4.81 to 2.28 eV), indicating an increase in the conductivity of the system. This study highlights the potential application of the TM@nanocage SAC systems as effective HER catalysts.

Stability of Single Gold Atoms on Defective and Doped Diamond Surfaces

Polycrystalline boron-doped diamond (BDD) is widely used as a working electrode material in electrochemistry, and its properties, such as its stability, make it an appealing support material for nanostructures in electrocatalytic applications. Recent experiments have shown that electrodeposition can lead to the creation of stable small nanoclusters and even single gold adatoms on the BDD surfaces. We investigate the adsorption energy and kinetic stability of single gold atoms adsorbed onto an atomistic model of BDD surfaces by using density functional theory. The surface model is constructed using hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics embedding techniques and is based on an oxygen-terminated diamond (110) surface. We use the hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics method to assess the ability of different density functional approximations to predict the adsorption structure, energy, and barrier for diffusion on pristine and defective surfaces. We find that surface defects (vacancies and surface dopants) strongly anchor adatoms on vacancy sites. We further investigated the thermal stability of gold adatoms, which reveals high barriers associated with lateral diffusion away from the vacancy site. The result provides an explanation for the high stability of experimentally imaged single gold adatoms on BDD and a starting point to investigate the early stages of nucleation during metal surface deposition.

Methanol steam reforming for hydrogen production over NiTiO3 nanocatalyst with hierarchical porous structure

Steam reforming for hydrogen production is one of the important research directions for clean energy. NiTiO₃ catalysts with a hierarchical porous structure are prepared and applied to methanol steam reforming for hydrogen production. The results show that the optimum catalyst (10% Ni-Ti-O_x) not only has a hierarchical porous structure, but it also involves the coexistence of NiTiO₃, anatase TiO₂ and rutile TiO₂. The formation of NiTiO₃ is beneficial to the adsorption and activation of methanol molecules on the surface of the Ni-Ti-O_x catalyst, and the main intermediate species of the methanol molecular reaction are hydroxyl groups, methoxy species and formic acid species. Furthermore, the methanol steam reforming reaction is mainly dominated by methanol decomposition at low temperature (350-500 °C), while it is mainly dominated by methanol and water molecular reactions at high temperature (500-600 °C).

Dynamic evolution of the active center driven by hemilabile coordination in Cu/CeO2 single-atom catalyst

Hemilability is an important concept in homogeneous catalysis where both the reactant activation and the product formation can occur simultaneously through a reversible opening and closing of the metal-ligand coordination sphere. However, this effect has rarely been discussed in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, by employing a theoretical study on CO oxidation over substituted Cu₁/CeO₂ single atom catalysts, we show that dynamic evolution of metal-support coordination can significantly change the electronic structure of the active center. The evolution of the active center is shown to either strengthen or weaken the metal-adsorbate bonding as the reaction proceeds from reactants, through intermediates, to products. As a result, the activity of the catalyst can be increased. We explain our observations by extending hemilability effects to single atom heterogenous catalysts and anticipate that introducing this concept can offer a new insight into the important role active site dynamics have in catalysis toward the rational design of more sophisticated single atom catalyst materials.

Atomically dispersed Au anchored on CeO2to enhancing the antioxidant activity

The modification of Au nanoparticles can improve the antioxidant activity of CeO₂, however, nano Au/CeO₂has also met some problems such as low atomic utilization, the limit of reaction conditions, and high cost. Au single atom catalysts can well solve the above-mentioned problems, but there are some contradictory results about the activity of single atom Au₁/CeO₂and nano Au/CeO₂. Here, we synthesized rod-like Au single atom Au/CeO₂(0.4% Au₁/CeO₂) and nano Au/CeO₂(1% Au/CeO₂, 2% Au/CeO₂and 4% Au/CeO₂), and their antioxidant activity from strong to weak is 0.4% Au₁/CeO₂, 1% Au/CeO₂, 2% Au/CeO₂and 4% Au/CeO₂, respectively. The higher antioxidant activity of 0.4% Au₁/CeO₂is mainly due to the high Au atomic utilization ratio and the stronger charge transfer between Au single atoms and CeO₂, resulting in the higher content of Ce³⁺. Due to the coexistence of Au single atoms and Au NPs in 2% Au/CeO₂, the antioxidant activity 2% Au/CeO₂is higher than that of 4% Au/CeO₂. And the enhancement effect of Au single atoms was not affected by the concentration of ·OH and material concentration. These results can promote the understanding of the antioxidant activity of 0.4% Au₁/CeO₂and promote its application.

Stabilizing Single-Atomic Pt by Forming PtFe Bonds for Efficient Diboration of Alkynes

Precisely tailoring the oxidation state of single-atomic metal in heterogeneous catalysis is an efficient way to stabilize the single-atomic site and promote their activity, but realizing this approach remains a grand challenge to date. Herein, a class of stable single-atomic catalysts with well-tuned oxidation state of Pt by forming PtFe atomic bonds is reported, which are supported by defective Fe₂ O₃  nanosheets on reduced graphene oxide (PFARFNs). These as-synthesized materials can greatly enhance the catalytic activity, stability, and selectivity for the diboration of alkynes. The PFARFNs exhibit high conversion of 99% at 100 °C with an outstanding turnover frequency (TOF) of 545 h^-1 , and a relatively high conversion of 58% at room temperature (25 °C) with a TOF of 310 h^-1 , which has been hardly achieved previously. Through both experimental and theoretical investigation, it is demonstrated that the fast electron transfer from Fe to Pt in Fe-Pt-O atomic sites in PFARFNs can not only stabilize the single-atomic Pt, but also significantly improve their catalytic activity.

Concentration dependent alloying behaviour of liquid GaAu

Liquid GaAu systems provide the possibility of developing dynamic and self-healing materials for a variety of applications, including catalysis. GaAu systems provide both dynamic capability by being liquid at just above room temperature, as a result of the Ga, and likely catalytic activity, resulting from the Au. While the formation of a Ga₂Au intermetallic is known, the behaviours that result from lower Au concentrations within a liquid Ga solvent are hitherto unknown. Here, ab initio molecular dynamics are used to understand how different low concentrations of Au operate within a liquid Ga solvent. We determine that Au concentrations of between 15% Au wt and 25% Au wt will give rise to the highest abundance of stabilised single Au atoms.

Controlling the Size of Au Nanoparticles on Reducible Oxides with the Electrochemical Potential

Controlling the size of Au nanoparticles (NPs) and their interaction with the oxide support is important for their catalytic performance in chemical reactions, such as CO oxidation and water-gas shift. It is known that the oxygen vacancies at the surface of support oxides form strong chemical bonding with the Au NPs and inhibit their coarsening and deactivation. The resulting Au/oxygen vacancy interface also acts as an active site for oxidation reactions. Hence, small Au NPs are needed to increase the density of the Au/oxide interface. A dynamic way to control the size of the Au NPs on an oxide support is desirable but has been missing in the field. Here, we demonstrate an electrochemical method to control the size of the Au NPs by controlling the surface oxygen vacancy concentration of the support oxide. Oxides with different reducibilities, La_0.8Ca_0.2MnO_3±δ and Pr_0.1Ce_0.9O_2-δ, are used as model support oxides. By applying the electrochemical potential, we achieve a wide range of effective oxygen pressures, pO₂ (10^-37-10¹⁴ atm), in the support oxides. Applying the cathodic potential creates a high concentration of oxygen vacancies and forms finely distributed Au NPs with sizes of 7-13 nm at 700-770 °C in 10 min, while the anodic potential oxidizes the surface and increases the size of the Au NPs. The onset cathodic potential required to create small Au NPs depends strongly on the reducibility of the support oxide. The Au NPs did not undergo sintering even at 700-770 °C under the cathodic potential and also were stable in catalytically relevant conditions without potential.

Design of Single-Atom Catalysts and Tracking Their Fate Using Operando and Advanced X-ray Spectroscopic Tools

The potential of operando X-ray techniques for following the structure, fate, and active site of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is highlighted with emphasis on a synergetic approach of both topics. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and related X-ray techniques have become fascinating tools to characterize solids and they can be applied to almost all the transition metals deriving information about the symmetry, oxidation state, local coordination, and many more structural and electronic properties. SACs, a newly coined concept, recently gained much attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. In this way, one can achieve a minimum use of the metal, theoretically highest efficiency, and the design of only one active site-so-called single site catalysts. While single sites are not easy to characterize especially under operating conditions, XAS as local probe together with complementary methods (infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy) is ideal in this research area to prove the structure of these sites and the dynamic changes during reaction. In this review, starting from their fundamentals, various techniques related to conventional XAS and X-ray photon in/out techniques applied to single sites are discussed with detailed mechanistic and in situ/operando studies. We systematically summarize the design strategies of SACs and outline their exploration with XAS supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and recent machine learning tools.

Recent progresses on single-atom catalysts for the removal of air pollutants

The booming industrialization has aggravated emission of air pollutants, inflicting serious harm on environment and human health. Supported noble-metals are one of the most popular catalysts for the oxidation removal of air pollutants. Unfortunately, the high price and large consumption restrict their development and practical application. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) emerge and offer an optimizing approach to address this issue. Due to maximal atom utilization, tunable coordination and electron environment and strong metal-support interaction, SACs have shown remarkable catalytic performance on many reactions. Over the last decade, great potential of SACs has been witnessed in the elimination of air pollutants. In this review, we first briefly summarize the synthesis methods and modulation strategies together with the characterization techniques of SACs. Next, we highlight the application of SACs in the abatement of air pollutants including CO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NOx, unveiling the related catalytic mechanism of SACs. Finally, we propose the remaining challenges and future perspectives of SACs in fundamental research and practical application in the field of air pollutant removal.

Revealing the pH-dependent mechanism of nitrate electrochemical reduction to ammonia on single-atom catalysts

Nitrate electrochemical reduction to ammonia (NO₃RR) catalyzed by single-atom catalysts (SACs) is an attractive and efficient way for solving the problem of nitrate pollution in water and obtaining valuable product ammonia through low temperature synthesis. It is well known that the pH conditions can be regulated to tune the performance of NO₃RR, however, there have been few studies aimed at gaining theoretical insight into the origin of pH-dependent catalytic performance among SACs. Herein, taking 3d-transition metal (Fe, Co, Ni and Mn) single-atoms supported on diverse anchor sites of MoS₂ as an example (SA-MoS₂), we explore the activity and selectivity for NO₃RR towards ammonia (NH₃ and NH₄⁺) under different pH conditions by density functional theory calculations. It is found that priority reaction pathways, the potential determining step and limiting potentials of SA-MoS₂ exhibit pH-dependent characteristics, which can be described by a contour map of catalytic reactivity, spanned by adsorption free energies (G_NO* and G_NH2*), and further determined by local coordination environment and electronic states of active sites. Our three-step screening method reveals that the Co single-atom adsorbed MoS₂ edge catalyst is the most promising catalyst among the studied SA-MoS₂ because of its low limiting potential (-0.3-0.4 V, RHE), excellent selectivity in the competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), as well as stability against aggregation and electrochemical dissolution across the full pH range. This work demonstrates a theoretical insight into the pH-dependent mechanism of supported SA catalyzed NO₃RR, which proposes a screening strategy for finding new SACs, and provides motivation for further experimental exploration.

Construction of Ultrathin S-Scheme Heterojunctions of Single Ni Atom Immobilized Ti-MOF and BiVO4 for CO2 Photoconversion of nearly 100% to CO by Pure Water

To rationally design single-atom metal-organic framework (MOF)-involving photocatalysts remains an ongoing challenge for efficient CO₂ conversion. Here, cuppy microstructures, consisting of a Ti(IV)-oxo node and three linked carboxylic moieties, in the single-coordination-layer Ti₂ (H₂ dobdc)₃ MOF (NTU-9) are exploited to immobilize abundant single Ni(II) sites (Ni@MOF). The coupling of Ni@MOF with BiVO₄ (BVO) nanosheets by H-bonding-induced assembly process obtains wide-spectrum 2D heterojunctions. The optimal heterojunction exhibits competitive performance and enables around 66-fold CO₂ conversion of that for BVO nanoparticles by pure water, with nearly 100% CO selectivity. The exceptional photoactivity is attributed to favorable S-scheme charge transfer from BVO to MOF then to single Ni(II) sites. Noteworthily, single Ni(II) sites anchored by the Ti(IV)-oxo node and vicinal carboxylic moieties serving as a unique local microenvironment (LME) are found to synergistically catalyze CO₂ conversion. Specifically, the hydroxyl groups of carboxylic moieties can form H-bonds with CO₂ to promote its adsorption on single Ni(II) sites, and also can provide accessible protons to facilitate H-assisted CO₂ reduction. Moreover, the CO desorption and subsequent CO₂ adsorption on single Ni(II) sites with LME is proved to be thermodynamically favored, and hence dominates the high CO selectivity. This work highlights the significance of modulating the LME of single atoms to rationally design photocatalysts for realizing carbon neutralization.

Isolating Single and Few Atoms for Enhanced Catalysis

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts have triggered great interest in the field of catalysis owing to their unique features. Isolated single or few metal atoms can be anchored on substrates via chemical bonding or space confinement to maximize atom utilization efficiency. The key challenge lies in precisely regulating the geometric and electronic structure of the active metal centers, thus significantly influencing the catalytic properties. Although several reviews have been published on the preparation, characterization, and application of single-atom catalysts (SACs), the comprehensive understanding of SACs, dual-atom catalysts (DACs), and atomic clusters has never been systematically summarized. Here, recent advances in the engineering of local environments of state-of-the-art SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters for enhanced catalytic performance are highlighted. Firstly, various synthesis approaches for SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters are presented. Then, special attention is focused on the elucidation of local environments in terms of electronic state and coordination structure. Furthermore, a comprehensive summary of isolated single and few atoms for the applications of thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis is provided. Finally, the potential challenges and future opportunities in this emerging field are presented. This review will pave the way to regulate the microenvironment of the active site for boosting catalytic processes.

Adsorption and Activation of O2 on Small Gold Oxide Clusters: the Reactivity Dominated by Site-Specific Factors

We experimentally explored adsorption and activation of O₂ on small anionic clusters Au_xO_y^- containing one to five gold atoms and between one and three oxygen atoms using an instrument including a magnetron sputtering cluster source, a micro flow reactor running at low temperature, and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Some species, including AuO^-, one isomer of Au₂O₂^-, Au₃O^-, one isomer of Au₃O₃^-, and Au₅O₂^-, can adsorb an O₂ molecule. We theoretically explored the structures of these active species and the inert ones appearing in the experiment by combining a structure search strategy based on the genetic algorithm and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Impressively, all active species observed in the experiment have a -O-Au site, in which the gold atom is a dangling or a vertex atom. Each -O-Au site can strongly adsorb one O₂ with its Au atom to form a straight-line structure -O-Au-O-, and the adsorbed O₂ is significantly activated by accepting one electron with one of its π_2p* orbitals. With no exception, all oxygen sites and the -O-Au-Au sites in Au_xO_y^- are inert. Analyses on the density of states (DOS) of representative species well interpret the physical origins of the activity of -O-Au and the inertness of -O-Au-Au. The observations that site-specific factors dominate the reactivity of gold oxide clusters with O₂ are in contrast to what happens in the reactions of Au_n^- with O₂, where clusters' reactivity is completely determined by their global spins and electron detachment energies. The new conclusions in this work offer a reference to understand the crucial O₂ activation processes in gold-based catalysts, since various gold oxide structures are commonly observed in these systems.

Single Atom Catalysts for Selective Methane Oxidation to Oxygenates

Direct conversion of methane (CH₄) to C_1-2 liquid oxygenates is a captivating approach to lock carbons in transportable value-added chemicals, while reducing global warming. Existing approaches utilizing the transformation of CH₄ to liquid fuel via tandemized steam methane reforming and the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis are energy and capital intensive. Chemocatalytic partial oxidation of methane remains challenging due to the negligible electron affinity, poor C-H bond polarizability, and high activation energy barrier. Transition-metal and stoichiometric catalysts utilizing harsh oxidants and reaction conditions perform poorly with randomized product distribution. Paradoxically, the catalysts which are active enough to break C-H also promote overoxidation, resulting in CO₂ generation and reduced carbon balance. Developing catalysts which can break C-H bonds of methane to selectively make useful chemicals at mild conditions is vital to commercialization. Single atom catalysts (SACs) with specifically coordinated metal centers on active support have displayed intrigued reactivity and selectivity for methane oxidation. SACs can significantly reduce the activation energy due to induced electrostatic polarization of the C-H bond to facilitate the accelerated reaction rate at the low reaction temperature. The distinct metal-support interaction can stabilize the intermediate and prevent the overoxidation of the reaction products. The present review accounts for recent progress in the field of SACs for the selective oxidation of CH₄ to C_1-2 oxygenates. The chemical nature of catalytic sites, effects of metal-support interaction, and stabilization of intermediate species on catalysts to minimize overoxidation are thoroughly discussed with a forward-looking perspective to improve the catalytic performance.

Solid-State Reaction Synthesis of Nanoscale Materials: Strategies and Applications

Nanomaterials (NMs) with unique structures and compositions can give rise to exotic physicochemical properties and applications. Despite the advancement in solution-based methods, scalable access to a wide range of crystal phases and intricate compositions is still challenging. Solid-state reaction (SSR) syntheses have high potential owing to their flexibility toward multielemental phases under feasibly high temperatures and solvent-free conditions as well as their scalability and simplicity. Controlling the nanoscale features through SSRs demands a strategic nanospace-confinement approach due to the risk of heat-induced reshaping and sintering. Here, we describe advanced SSR strategies for NM synthesis, focusing on mechanistic insights, novel nanoscale phenomena, and underlying principles using a series of examples under different categories. After introducing the history of classical SSRs, key theories, and definitions central to the topic, we categorize various modern SSR strategies based on the surrounding solid-state media used for nanostructure growth, conversion, and migration under nanospace or dimensional confinement. This comprehensive review will advance the quest for new materials design, synthesis, and applications.

Coadsorption Interfered CO Oxidation over Atomically Dispersed Au on h-BN

Similar to the metal centers in biocatalysis and homogeneous catalysis, the metal species in single atom catalysts (SACs) are charged, atomically dispersed and stabilized by support and substrate. The reaction condition dependent catalytic performance of SACs has long been realized, but seldom investigated before. We investigated CO oxidation pathways over SACs in reaction conditions using atomically dispersed Au on h-BN (AuBN) as a model with extensive first-principles-based calculations. We demonstrated that the adsorption of reactants, namely CO, O2 and CO2, and their coadsorption with reaction species on AuBN would be condition dependent, leading to various reaction species with different reactivity and impact the CO conversion. Specifically, the revised Langmuir-Hinshelwood pathway with the CO-mediated activation of O2 and dissociation of cyclic peroxide intermediate followed by the Eley-Rideal type reduction is dominant at high temperatures, while the coadsorbed CO-mediated dissociation of peroxide intermediate becomes plausible at low temperatures and high CO partial pressures. Carbonate species would also form in existence of CO2, react with coadsorbed CO and benefit the conversion. The findings highlight the origin of the condition-dependent CO oxidation performance of SACs in detailed conditions and may help to rationalize the current understanding of the superior catalytic performance of SACs.

Reduction-Controlled Atomic Migration for Single Atom Alloy Library

Picturing the atomic migration pathways of catalysts in a reactive atmosphere is of central significance for uncovering the underlying catalytic mechanisms and directing the design of high-performance catalysts. Here, we describe a reduction-controlled atomic migration pathway that converts nanoparticles to single atom alloys (SAAs), which has remained synthetically challenging in prior attempts due to the elusive mechanism. We achieved this by thermally treating the noble-metal nanoparticles M (M = Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au) on metal oxide (CuO) supports with H₂/Ar. Atomic-level characterization revealed such conversion as the synergistic consequence of noble metal-promoted H₂ dissociation and concomitant CuO reduction. The observed atomic migration pathway offers an understanding of the dynamic mechanisms study of nanomaterials formation and catalyst design.

Theoretical Perspective on Operando Spectroscopy of Fluxional Nanocatalysts

Improvements in operando spectroscopy have enabled the catalysis community to investigate the dynamic nature of catalysts under operating conditions with increasing detail. Still, the highly dynamic nature of some catalysts, such as fluxional supported subnano clusters, presents a formidable challenge even for the most state-of-the-art techniques. The reason is that such fluxional catalytic interfaces contain a variety of thermally accessible states. Operando spectroscopies used in catalysis generally fall into two categories: ensemble-based techniques, which provide spectra containing the signals of the entire ensemble of states of the catalyst and are not necessarily dominated by the most active species, and localized techniques, which provide atomistic-level information about the dynamics of active sites in a very small area, which might not include the most active species. Combining many different kinds of techniques can provide detailed insight; however, we propose that effective utilization of specific computational techniques and approaches within the fluxionality paradigm can fill the gap and enable atomistic characterization of the most relevant catalytic sites.

Electronic metal-support interaction constructed for preparing sinter-resistant nano-platinum catalyst with redox property

Generally, support materials with particular structural properties could effectively anchor metal nanoparticles and provide lower activation barriers in heterogeneous catalysis. To tailor the structure of stable iron oxide, NiFe₂O₄ of inverse spinel structure was obtained by combining nickel with iron element under an alkaline environment and high-temperature calcination. The p-type conductivity of NiFe₂O₄ provides the possibility of constructing electronic interfacial interaction with Pt nanoparticles by electron transfer. The constructed metal-support interaction could effectively stabilize Pt nanoparticles and be further enhanced during long-term harsh calcination (700 °C for 48 h) even under an O₂ atmosphere. Meanwhile, the abundant structural defects of NiFe₂O₄ are beneficial for constructing low-temperature redox centers with the aid of Pt nanoparticles. Pt/NiFe₂O₄ exhibited not only excellent activity in room-temperature oxidation (CO and HCHO) and reduction reactions (chemo-selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes), but also high stability even after storage for more than 6 months. A self-adjusting mechanism triggered by structural defects is disclosed by in situ characterization and systematic reaction results. This work demonstrates an alternative concept to construct sinter-resistant and highly-effective nano-platinum catalysts robust for oxidation and reduction reactions.

Desilylative Coupling Involving C(sp2)-Si Bond Cleavage on Metal Surfaces

Desilylative coupling involving C-Si bond cleavage has emerged as one of the most important synthetic strategies for carbon-carbon/heteroatom bond formation in solution chemistry. However, in on-surface chemistry, C-Si bond cleavage remains a synthetic challenge. Here, we report the implementation of C(sp²)-Si bond cleavage and subsequent C-C bond formation on metal surfaces. The combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculation successfully reveals that the incorporation of the C-Br group on the arylsilanes is critical to the success of this desilylative coupling reaction on metal surfaces. Our study represents a promising approach for the removal of protecting silyl groups in on-surface chemistry.

Nanoscale Self-Wetting Driven Monatomization of Ag Nanoparticle for Excellent Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) with <10 nm have demonstrated many novel applications including surprisingly low melting point, astonishing liquid-like pseudoelasticity, and outstanding hydrogen evolution performance. Here, a nanoscale self-wetting driven monatomization of Ag NPs with <5 nm on carbon nitride (CN) to fabricate Ag single-atom catalyst (Ag₁ /CN SAC) is demonstrated, and a thermodynamic approach to elucidate Ag NPs decomposing into single atoms is established. Dynamic dispersion process of Ag NPs into atoms on CN is recorded using in situ AC-HADDF-TEM techniques. Density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the spontaneous dispersion origins from the nanoscale self-wetting effect in thermodynamics. In atomic scale, the driving force of self-wetting derived from the balance between cohesive energy of Ag NPs and excess energy of Ag atoms in CN vacations. The fabricated Ag₁ /CN SAC proved a higher efficiency for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (3690 μmmol g^-1 h^-1 ) than Pt nanoparticles on CN (3192 μmmol g^-1 h^-1 ). This spontaneous monatomization resulting from the interaction between metal NPs and substrate provides a simple method to prepare SACs with a high active photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Single Atom Catalysts: An Overview of the Coordination and Interactions with Metallic Supports

Catalyst utilization is a key economic factor in heterogeneous catalysis, particularly, when noble metals are used as the active phase. A huge saving on catalyst cost can be achieved with developing a single atomic layer of the active catalyst on a given cheap support. Besides the economic benefit, single atom catalysts (SACs) have also shown superior activity and selectivity relative to catalytic particles or nanoparticles; yet they are prone to aggregation and deactivation. The development of effective, stable, and commercially viable SACs is still a huge challenge. One of the remaining key obstacles is the ability to easily and effectively tune SACs-support interactions and coordination in a way that enables the production of robust, stable, and versatile SACs. Accordingly, the coordination and interactions between metallic supports and SACs and their impacts on SACs stability and activity are reviewed in this article.

Elucidating Active CO–Au Species on Au/CeO2(111): A Combined Modulation Excitation DRIFTS and Density Functional Theory Study

In this work we elucidate the main steps of the CO oxidation mechanism over Au/CeO2(111), clarifying the course of CO adsorption at a broad variety of surface sites as well as of transmutations of one CO species into another. By combining transient spectroscopy with DFT calculations we provide new evidence that the active centers for CO conversion are single gold atoms. To gain insight into the reaction mechanism, we employ Modulation Excitation (ME) DRIFT spectroscopy in combination with the mathematical tool of Phase Sensitive Detection to identify the active species and perform DFT calculations to facilitate the assignments of the observed bands. The transient nature of the ME-DRIFTS method allows us to sort the observed species temporally, providing further mechanistic insight. Our study highlights the potential of combined transient spectroscopy and theoretical calculations (DFT) to clarify the role of adsorbates observed and to elucidate the reaction mechanism of CO oxidation over supported gold and other noble-metal catalysts.

Construction of stable MoxSy/CeO2 heterostructures for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

The unique structures of polynuclear Mo_xS_y clusters make it possible to maximize the number of their active sites and for them to be good candidates for HER catalysts. An appropriate support is highly necessary not only to avoid the desorption of Mo_xS_y clusters in a working environment, but also to improve their HER activity. Our work here shows that the CeO₂ support could provide strong support for interaction with various Mo_xS_y clusters and the formed Mo_xS_y/CeO₂ hetero-structures also have modest ΔG_H* for the HER. The electronic features of Mo_xS_y clusters are regulated by the CeO₂ support, which leads to charge redistribution on edge atoms and plays a key role in H adsorption. Our studies provide instructive predictions on efficient candidates of molybdenum-sulfur based catalysts for the HER.

Computational Studies of Coinage Metal Anion M- + CH3X (X = F, Cl, Br, I) Reactions in Gas Phase

We characterized the stationary points along the nucleophilic substitution (S_N2), oxidative insertion (OI), halogen abstraction (XA), and proton transfer (PT) product channels of M⁻ + CH₃X (M = Cu, Ag, Au; X = F, Cl, Br, I) reactions using the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. In general, the reaction energies follow the order of PT > XA > S_N2 > OI. The OI channel that results in oxidative insertion complex [CH₃–M–X]⁻ is most exothermic, and can be formed through a front-side attack of M on the C-X bond via a high transition state OxTS or through a S_N2-mediated halogen rearrangement path via a much lower transition state invTS. The order of OxTS > invTS is inverted when changing M⁻ to Pd, a d¹⁰ metal, because the symmetry of their HOMO orbital is different. The back-side attack S_N2 pathway proceeds via typical Walden-inversion transition state that connects to pre- and post-reaction complexes. For X = Cl/Br/I, the invS_N2-TS’s are, in general, submerged. The shape of this M⁻ + CH₃X S_N2 PES is flatter as compared to that of a main-group base like F⁻ + CH₃X, whose PES has a double-well shape. When X = Br/I, a linear halogen-bonded complex [CH₃−X∙··M]⁻ can be formed as an intermediate upon the front-side attachment of M on the halogen atom X, and it either dissociates to CH₃ + MX⁻ through halogen abstraction or bends the C-X-M angle to continue the back-side S_N2 path. Natural bond orbital analysis shows a polar covalent M−X bond is formed within oxidative insertion complex [CH₃–M–X]⁻, whereas a noncovalent M–X halogen-bond interaction exists for the [CH₃–X∙··M]⁻ complex. This work explores competing channels of the M⁻ + CH₃X reaction in the gas phase and the potential energy surface is useful in understanding the dynamic behavior of the title and analogous reactions.

Metal-Support Interactions of Single-Atom Catalysts for Biomedical Applications

The development of single-atom catalysts (SACs) has become a rapidly growing research field. It is a critical challenge to understand the interactions between the single-atom metal active sites and the support materials. Recently, original research reports of SACs in biomedical applications have emerged in the literature, yet this topic has seldom been reviewed. Here, this review focuses on the latest advances in single-atom catalysis for biomedical applications and highlights the keys for the design of SACs, such as understanding the interactions between metals and supports and classifying various enzyme-like activities. This review helps bridge the knowledge of multiple disciplines and provides prospects regarding the development of SACs for biomedicine.

Dynamics of Heterogeneous Catalytic Processes at Operando Conditions

The rational design of high-performance catalysts is hindered by the lack of knowledge of the structures of active sites and the reaction pathways under reaction conditions, which can be ideally addressed by an in situ/operando characterization. Besides the experimental insights, a theoretical investigation that simulates reaction conditions-so-called operando modeling-is necessary for a plausible understanding of a working catalyst system at the atomic scale. However, there is still a huge gap between the current widely used computational model and the concept of operando modeling, which should be achieved through multiscale computational modeling. This Perspective describes various modeling approaches and machine learning techniques that step toward operando modeling, followed by selected experimental examples that present an operando understanding in the thermo- and electrocatalytic processes. At last, the remaining challenges in this area are outlined.

Rational design of metal oxide catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting

Electrocatalytic energy conversion between electricity and chemical bonding energy is realized through redox reactions with multiple charge transfer steps at the electrode-electrolyte interface. The surface atomic structure of the electrode materials, if appropriately designed, will provide an energetically affordable pathway with individual reaction intermediates that not only reduce the thermodynamic energy barrier but also allow an acceptably fast kinetic rate of the overall redox reaction. As one of the most abundant and stable forms, oxides of transitional metals demonstrated promising electrocatalytic activities towards multiple important chemical reactions. In this topical review, we attempt to discuss the possible avenues to construct the electrocatalytic active surface for this important class of materials for two essential chemical reactions for water splitting. A general introduction of the electrochemical water splitting process on the electrocatalyst surface with applied potential will be provided, followed by a discussion on the fundamental charge transfers and the mechanism. As the generally perceived active sites are chemical reaction dependent, we offer a general overview of the possible approaches to construct or create electrocatalytically active sites in the context of surface atomic structure engineering. The review concludes with perspectives that summarize challenges and opportunities in electrocatalysis and how these can be addressed to unlock the electrocatalytic potentials of the metal oxide materials.
