Six States Switching of Redox-Active Molecular Tweezers by Three Orthogonal Stimuli

Self-Assembled Bis-Acridinium Tweezer Equilibria Controlled by Multi-Responsive Properties

Protonated and methylated bis-acridinium tweezers built around a 2,6-diphenylpyridyl and an electron enriched 2,6-di(p-anisyl)pyridyl spacer have been synthesized. These tweezers can self-assemble in their corresponding homodimers and the associated thermodynamic parameters have been probed in organic solvents. The switching properties of the tweezers have been exploited in biphasic transfer experiments showing the shift of the equilibria towards the homodimers. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters of the formation of the reduced methylated homodimers investigated by electrochemical experiments revealed the dissociation of the dimers. Thus, in addition to solvent and temperature, the pH and redox responsiveness of the acridinium units of the tweezers make it possible to modulate to a larger extent the monomer-dimer equilibria.

Cyclometalated luminescent platinum(II) complexes of dissymmetrical 2,2':4',2''-terpyridine and its self-assembled dimer presenting Pt-Ag dative bonds

A series of cyclometalated (N^C^N) Pt(II)-platinum complexes featuring a terpyridine ligand with a non-coordinating nitrogen atom and a Pt-C bond was synthesized. In the presence of Ag+, the bis(isonitrile)Pt(II) complex formed a remarkable self-assembled helicoidal dimer stabilized by coordination of Ag(I) and metallophilic Pt-Ag interactions. Its assembly was observed in the solid state and maintained in solution. All complexes show strong luminescence and multiple emitting states, which could be rationalized based on solid state X-ray structures and coordinating environment.

Switchable molecular tweezers: design and applications

Switchable molecular tweezers are a unique class of molecular switches that, like their macroscopic analogs, exhibit mechanical motion between an open and closed conformation in response to stimuli. Such systems constitute an essential component of artificial molecular machines. This review will present selected examples of switchable molecular tweezers and their potential applications. The first part will be devoted to chemically responsive tweezers, including stimuli such as pH, metal coordination, and anion binding. Then, redox-active and photochemical tweezers will be presented.

Tuning valence tautomerism in a family of dinuclear cobalt complexes incorporating a conjugated bridging bis(dioxolene) ligand with weak communication

Valence tautomerism (VT) involves the stimulated reversible intramolecular electron transfer between a redox-active metal and ligand. Dinuclear cobalt complexes bridged by bis(dioxolene) ligands can undergo thermally-induced VT with access to {CoIII-cat-cat-CoIII}, {CoIII-cat-SQ-CoII} and {CoII-SQ-SQ-CoII} states (cat2- = catecholate, SQ˙- = semiquinonate, CoIII refers to low spin CoIII, CoII refers to high spin CoII). The resulting potential for two-step VT interconversions offers increased functionality over mononuclear examples. In this study, the bis(dioxolene) ligand 3,3',4,4'-tetrahydroxy-5,5'-dimethoxy-benzaldazine (thMH4) was paired with Mentpa (tpa = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, n = 0-3 corresponds to methylation at 6-position of the pyridine rings) to afford [{Co(Mentpa)}2(thM)](PF6)2 (1a, n = 0; 2a, n = 2; 3a, n = 3). Structural, magnetic susceptibility and spectroscopic data show that 1a and 3a remain in the temperature invariant {CoIII-cat-cat-CoIII} and {CoII-SQ-SQ-CoII} forms in the solid state, respectively. In contrast, 2a exhibits incomplete thermally-induced VT between these two tautomeric forms via the mixed {CoIII-cat-SQ-CoII} tautomer. In solution, room temperature electronic absorption spectra are consistent with the assignments from the solid-state, with VT observed only for 2a. From electrochemistry, the proximity of the two 1e--processes for the thMn- ligand indicates weak electronic communication between the two dioxolene units, supporting the potential for a two-step VT interconversion in thMn- containing complexes. Comparison of the redox potentials of the Co and thMn- processes suggests that only 2a has these processes in sufficient proximity to afford the thermally-induced VT observed experimentally. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with the prerequisite energy ordering for a two-step transition for 2a, and temperature invariant {CoIII-cat-cat-CoIII} and {CoII-SQ-SQ-CoII} states for 1a and 3a, respectively. This work presents the third example, and the first formally conjugated example, of a bridging bis(dioxolene) ligand that can afford two-step VT in a Co complex, suggesting new possibilities towards applications based on multistep switching.

Hard-Soft Cooperativity of an Allosteric Tweezer

Drawing inspiration from allosteric proteins, a zigzag-shaped π-conjugation was structurally engineered into a tweezer-like ionophore having multiple disparate binding sites. When a soft metal ion binds to the central tridentate ligand motif, the rigid backbone folds, bringing two macrocyclic arms into close proximity. Stabilized by a coordinating anion, the tweezer-like conformation of the resulting metalloligand recruits a hard cation to form a sandwich-like complex with a remarkably enhanced binding affinity and selectivity.

Multi-Responsive Eight-State Bis(acridinium-Zn(II) porphyrin) Receptor

A multi-responsive receptor consisting of two (acridinium-Zn(II) porphyrin) conjugates has been designed. The binding constant between this receptor and a ditopic guest has been modulated (i) upon addition of nucleophiles converting acridinium moieties into the non-aromatic acridane derivatives and (ii) upon oxidation of the porphyrin units. A total of eight states has been probed for this receptor resulting from the cascade of the recognition and responsive events. Moreover, the acridinium/acridane conversion leads to a significant change of the photophysical properties, switching from electron to energy transfer processes. Interestingly, for the bis(acridinium-Zn(II) porphyrin) receptor, charge-transfer luminescence in the near-infrared has been observed.

A Multiresponsive Calix[6]arene Pseudorotaxane Empowered by Fluorophoric Dansyl Groups

We report the synthesis and characterization, by means of NMR and UV-visible spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques, of a dansyl calix[6]arene derivative and of its pseudorotaxane complex with a bipyridinium-based axle. This novel macrocycle shows remarkable complexation ability, in analogy with parent compounds, while the dansyl moieties impart valuable features to the system. Indeed, these units: i) signal the state of the system by fluorescence; ii) can be reversibly protonated, enabling the modulation of the complexation abilities of the macrocycle; iii) participate in photoinduced electron transfer processes, which may be exploited to tune the stability of the supramolecular complex. Therefore, in this multiresponsive pseudorotaxane, the threading and de-threading motions of the molecular components can be modulated either by protonation of the calixarene host or by reduction of the bipyridinium guest, which can be accomplished both by electrochemical reduction and via photoinduced electron transfer. Overall, three orthogonal and reversible stimuli can be used to induce molecular movements of the pseudorotaxane components.

Confinement-Driven Photophysics in Hydrazone-Based Hierarchical Materials

Confinement-imposed photophysics was probed for novel stimuli-responsive hydrazone-based compounds demonstrating a conceptual difference in their behavior within 2D versus 3D porous matrices for the first time. The challenges associated with photoswitch isomerization arising from host interactions with photochromic compounds in 2D scaffolds could be overcome in 3D materials. Solution-like photoisomerization rate constants were realized for sterically demanding hydrazone derivatives in the solid state through their coordinative immobilization in 3D scaffolds. According to steady-state and time-resolved photophysical measurements and theoretical modeling, this approach provides access to hydrazone-based materials with fast photoisomerization kinetics in the solid state. Fast isomerization of integrated hydrazone derivatives allows for probing and tailoring resonance energy transfer (ET) processes as a function of excitation wavelength, providing a novel pathway for ET modulation.

Phosphorescent Host-Guest Complexes on the Basis of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Functionalized Metallotweezers

Phosphorescent host-guest systems have attracted considerable attention because of their intriguing properties and diverse applications. In this study, a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-functionalized gold(III) tweezer receptor has been designed and synthesized. It is capable of sandwiching platinum(II) terpyridine compounds into its cavity with a high noncovalent binding affinity (association constants: ∼10⁵ M^-1 in chloroform). The resulting heterometallic host-guest complexes exhibit enhanced phosphorescent emission compared with those of the individual species in chloroform, thanks to the prevention of vibration and rotation upon noncovalent complexation. They can further assemble into nanospheres in chloroform/diethyl ether (1:9, v/v) owing to phase segregation between the metallotweezer/guest motif and the peripheral polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane unit. When terpyridine platinum(II) chloride serves as the complementary guest, the resulting noncovalent system displays an intraligand emission at the individual host-guest complexed state yet excimeric emission at the supramolecular assembled state, yielding the phosphorescent solvatochromic behaviors. Overall, the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-functionalized metallotweezer combines guest encapsulation and supramolecular assembly capabilities, which provides new avenues for color-tunable phosphorescent materials.

Base-Catalyzed, Solvent-Free Synthesis of Rigid V-Shaped Epoxydibenzo[b,f][1,5]diazocines

A novel method for the synthesis of epoxydibenzo[b,f][1,5]diazocines exhibiting a V-shaped molecular architecture is reported. The unique approach is based on unprecedented base-catalyzed, solvent-free autocondensation and cross-condensation of fluorinated o-aminophenones. The structure of the newly synthesized diazocines was confirmed independently by X-ray analysis and chiroptical methods. The rigidity of the diazocine scaffold allowed for the separation of the racemate into single enantiomers that proved to be thermally stable up to 140 °C. Furthermore, the inertness of the diazocine scaffold was demonstrated by performing a series of typical transformations, including transition metal-catalyzed reactions, proceeding without affecting the bis-hemiaminal subunit.

Binding Properties of a Dinuclear Zinc(II) Salen-Type Molecular Tweezer with a Flexible Spacer in the Formation of Lewis Acid-Base Adducts with Diamines

In this paper we report the binding properties, by combined 1H NMR, optical absorption, and fluorescence studies, of a molecular tweezer composed of two Zn(salen)-type Schiff-base units connected by a flexible spacer, towards a series of ditopic diamines having a strong Lewis basicity, with different chain length and rigidity. Except for the 1,2-diaminoethane, in all other cases the formation of stable 1:1 Lewis acid-base adducts with large binding constants is demonstrated. For α,ω-aliphatic diamines, binding constants progressively increase with the increasing length of the alkyl chain, thanks to the flexible nature of the spacer and the parallel decreased conformational strain upon binding. Stable adducts are also found even for short diamines with rigid molecular structures. Given their preorganized structure, these latter species are not subjected to loss of degrees of freedom. The binding characteristics of the tweezer have been exploited for the colorimetric and fluorometric selective and sensitive detection of piperazine.

Electron-Triggered Metamorphism in Palladium-Driven Self-Assembled Architectures

A metal-induced self-assembly strategy is used to promote the π-dimerization of viologen-based radicals at room temperature and in standard concentration ranges. Discrete box-shaped 2:2 (M:L) macrocycles or coordination polymers are formed in solution by self-assembly of a viologen-based ditopic ligand with cis-[Pd(en)(NO₃)₂], trans-[Pd(CH₃CN)₂(Cl)₂], or [Pd(CH₃CN)₄(BF₄)₂]. Changing the redox state of the bipyridium units involved in the tectons, from their dicationic state to their radical cation state, results in a reversible "inflation/deflation" of the discrete 2:2 (M:L) macrocyclic assemblies associated to a large modification in the size of their inner cavity. Viologen-centered electron transfer is also used to trigger a dissociation of the coordination polymers formed with tetrakis(acetonitrile)Pd(II), the driving force of the disassembling process being the formation of discrete box-shaped 2:2 (M:L) assemblies stabilized by π-dimerization of both viologen cation radicals.

A Bis-Acridinium Macrocycle as Multi-Responsive Receptor and Selective Phase-Transfer Agent of Perylene

A bis-acridinium cyclophane incorporating switchable acridinium moieties linked by a 3,5-dipyridylanisole spacer was studied as a multi-responsive host for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon guests. Complexation of perylene was shown to be the most effective and was characterized in particular by a charge-transfer band as signal output. Effective catch and release of the guest was triggered by both chemical (proton/hydroxide) and redox stimuli. Moreover, the dicationic host was also easily switched between organic and perfluorocarbon phases for applications related to the enrichment of perylene from a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Organoplatinum(II)-Based Self-Complementary Molecular Tweezers with Guest-Induced Fluorochromic Behaviors

Cyclometalated organoplatinum(II) complexes have aroused tremendous interests due to their square-planar geometry and intriguing photophysics. To access multiplatinum systems with more than three cyclometalated organoplatinum(II) units, the traditional covalent synthetic approach suffers from tedious multistep reactions with low overall yield. In comparison, supramolecular assembly can be regarded as an effective strategy toward multiplatinum(II) architectures. Despite the progresses achieved, it is still challenging to fabricate well-ordered supramolecular assemblies with precise numbers of organoplatinum(II) units. Herein, self-complementary dimerized molecular tweezers with four cyclometalated platinum(II) units have been successfully constructed by taking advantage of dual roles of the incorporated 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine unit (serving as the rigid spacer and encapsulated guest). Furthermore, addition of electron-rich carbazoles leads to conversion of the self-complementary structure to molecular tweezer/guest complexes. Such a structural transformation gives rise to the concomitant luminescent color change. The unique guest-induced fluorochromic phenomena, which are seldom reported in the previous host-guest systems, would be promising as tunable luminescent and ratiometric sensing materials.

Acrylic Polymers Containing a Nickel Salphen Complex: An Approach to Supramolecular and Macromolecular Systems

The synthesis, characterization and crystallographic analysis is reported of a new Nickel Salphen complex and its radical copolymerization with n-butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate to produce novel host macromolecules with tunable association against guest anions. Spectrophotometric titrations of the complex and of the polymers revealed that a supramolecular regulation of guest-binding accessibility was enabled by the number of Ni-Salphen units per chain. The latter content in turn, determined the chain size and molecular weight uniformity upon polymerization, and likely increased the strength in interchain/intrachain non-covalent interactions over the nickel center and the acrylic domains. The study also showed that incorporation of the monomer into the acrylic polymer backbone opened the possibility for the nickel binding site to gain access to host:guest stoichiometric discrimination, switching from 1 : 1 (major) and 1 : 2 (minor) both coexisting for the host when in the free form, to mostly 1 : 2 when in the polymerized version.

Stimuli-Responsive Resorcin[4]arene Cavitands: Toward Visible-Light-Activated Molecular Grippers

Resorcin[4]arene cavitands, equipped with diverse quinone (Q) and [Ru(bpy)₂ dppz]²⁺ (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) photosensitizing walls in different configurations, were synthesized. Upon visible-light irradiation at 420 nm, electron transfer from the [Ru(bpy)₂ dppz]²⁺ to the Q generates the semiquinone (SQ) radical anion, triggering a large conformational switching from a flat kite to a vase with a cavity for the encapsulation of small guests, such as cyclohexane and heteroalicyclic derivatives, in CD₃ CN. Depending on the molecular design, the SQ radical anion can live for several minutes (≈10 min) and the vase can be generated in a secondary process without need for addition of a sacrificial electron donor to accumulate the SQ state. Switching can also be triggered by other stimuli, such as changes in solvent, host-guest complexation, and chemical and electrochemical processes. This comprehensive investigation benefits the development of stimuli-responsive nanodevices, such as light-activated molecular grippers.

Dinuclear zinc(ii) salen-type Schiff-base complexes as molecular tweezers

In this contribution, the synthesis and the unusual aggregation/deaggregation properties in solution of two dinuclear ZnII Schiff-base complexes of tetradentate Schiff-base units, having non-conjugated spacers between each molecular unit, are reported in comparison to the mononuclear model complex. Through detailed 1H NMR, DOSY NMR, optical absorption, fluorescence emission, and multivariate analysis of optical absorption data, emerge some interesting findings. In solution of non-coordinating solvents, these Lewis acidic species are characterized as monomers stabilized by formation of intramolecular aggregates, having distinct spectroscopic properties in comparison to intermolecular aggregates derived from the mononuclear model analogue. Instead, in coordinating solvents they exhibit a typical behaviour, with formation of stable adducts showing a strong fluorescence. Deaggregation studies using pyridine as reference Lewis base allowed establishing a larger thermodynamic stability of these intramolecular aggregates, in comparison to intermolecular aggregates, even larger than that of aggregates of conjugated multinuclear complexes. The combined analysis of spectroscopic data upon deaggregation with ditopic Lewis bases unambiguously demonstrated the formation of stable 1 : 1 adducts, with higher binding constants in comparison to those related to monotopic species. Therefore, the present Lewis acidic, dinuclear complexes behave as molecular tweezers of ditopic guests having a strong Lewis basicity.

Boron-Nitrogen Double Tweezers Comprising Arylboronic Esters and Diamines: Self-Assembly in Solution and Adaptability as Hosts for Aromatic Guests in the Solid State

The thermodynamic stability of 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 boron-nitrogen (B←N) adducts formed between aromatic boronic esters with mono- and diamines was studied in solution by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy with association energies (ΔG°) ranging from -11 to -28 kJ mol^-1 . The effect of different substituents in the boronic ester, the nature of the diamine linker, and the effect of the solvent was explored. Stable 2 : 1 B←N adducts with diamines such as 1,3-diaminopropane were produced in solutions of hydrogen-bonding acceptor solvents (acetonitrile and ethyl acetate), which can be isolated in the solid state as crystalline solvates, whereas the use of noncoordinating solvents such as 1,2-dichloroethane afforded mainly 1 : 1 B←N adducts. In suitable combinations, aromatic bis-pyridyl diamines produced stable 2 : 1 B←N adducts that were isolated either as solvent-free solids, solvates, or cocrystals. In these crystalline forms, double-tweezer hosts were observed with an exceptional syn/anti conformational guest-adaptability driven by simultaneous donor-acceptor and C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the tweezer cavities, resembling preorganized covalent tweezer hosts. Interestingly, cocrystals with electron-rich guests such as tetrathiafulvalene and pyrene showed non-centrosymmetric crystal lattices with infinite π-stacked donor-acceptor columns.

Dual switchable molecular tweezers incorporating anisotropic MnIII-salphen complexes

An alternative strategy for the synthesis of terpyridine based switchable molecular tweezers has been developed to incorporate anisotropic Mn(iii)-salphen complexes. The free ligand was synthesized using a building block strategy based on Sonogashira coupling reactions and was then selectively metalated with manganese in a last step. The conformation of the tweezers was switched from an open 'W' shaped form to a closed 'U' form by Zn(ii) coordination to the terpyridine unit bringing the two Mn-salphen moieties in close spatial proximity as confirmed by X-ray crystallography. An alternate switching mechanism was observed by the intercalation of a bridging cyanide ligand between the two Mn-salphen moieties that resulted in the closing of the tweezers. These dual stimuli are attractive for achieving multiple controls of the mechanical motion of the tweezers. A crystallographic structure of unexpected partially oxidized closed tweezers was also obtained. One of the two Mn-salphen moieties underwent a ligand-centered oxidation of an imino to an amido group allowing an intramolecular Mn-Oamide-Mn linkage. The magnetic properties of the manganese(iii) dimers were investigated to evaluate the magnetic exchange interaction and analyze the single molecule magnet behavior.

Substrate-dependent allosteric regulation by switchable catalytic molecular tweezers

Allosteric regulation is exploited by biological systems to regulate the activity and/or selectivity of enzymatic reactions but remains a challenge for artificial catalysts. Here we report switchable terpy(Zn-salphen)2 molecular tweezers and their metal-dependent allosteric regulation of the acetylation of pyridinemethanol isomers. Zinc-salphen moieties can both act as a Lewis acid to activate the anhydride reagents and provide a binding site for pyridinemethanol substrates. The tweezers’ conformation can be reversibly switched between an open and a closed form by a metal ion stimulus. Both states offer distinct catalytic profiles, with closed tweezers showing superior catalytic activity towards ortho substrates, while open tweezers presenting higher rate for the acetylation of meta and para substrates. This notable substrate dependent allosteric response is rationalized by a combination of experimental results and calculations supporting a bimetallic reaction in the closed form for ortho substrate and an inhibition of the cavity for meta and para substrates.

Three-state switching in a double-pole change-over nanoswitch controlled by redox-dependent self-sorting

The four-arm nanomechanical switch 1 with four different terminals exhibits two switching arms (contacts A and D) and two distinct stations for binding (contacts B and C). In switching State I, the azaterpyridine arm is intramolecularly coordinated to a zinc(ii) porphyrin station (connection A ↔ B) while contact D (a ferrocenylbipyridine unit) and contact C (phenanthroline) remain disconnected. After addition of copper(i) ions (State II) both connections A ↔ B and C ↔ D are established. Upon one-electron oxidation, double-pole change-over switching cleaves both connections A ↔ B & C ↔ D and establishes the new connection A ↔ C (State III). Fully reversible three-state switching (State I → State II → State III → State II → State I) was achieved by adding appropriate chemical and redox stimuli.

Aggregation-induced emission supramolecular organic framework (AIE SOF) gels constructed from tri-pillar[5]arene-based foldamer for ultrasensitive detection and separation of multi-analytes

In this study, a novel aggregation-induced emission supramolecular organic framework (AIE SOF) with ultrasensitive response, termed FSOF, was constructed using a tri-pillar[5]arene-based foldamer. Interestingly, benefiting from the noise signal shielding properties of FSOF as well as the competition between the cationπ and ππ interactions, the FSOF shows an ultrasensitive response for multi-analytes, such as Fe3+, Hg2+ and Cr3+. The limits of detection (LODs) of the FSOF for Fe3+, Hg2+ and Cr3+ are in the range of 9.40 × 10-10-1.86 × 10-9. More importantly, the xerogel of FSOF exhibits porous mesh structures, which could effect high-efficiency separation above metal ions from their aqueous solution, with adsorption percentages in the range 92.39-99.99%. In addition, by introducing metal ions into the FSOF, a series of metal ions coordinated supramolecular organic frameworks (MSOFs) were successfully constructed. Moreover, MSOFs show selective fluorescence "turn on" ultrasensitive detection CN- (LOD = 2.12 × 10-9) and H2PO4- (LOD = 1.78 × 10-9). This is a novel approach to construct SOFs through a tri-pillar[5]arene-based foldamer, and also provides a new way to achieve ultrasensitive detection and high-efficiency separation.

Pharmaceutical Applications of Molecular Tweezers, Clefts and Clips

Synthetic acyclic receptors, composed of two arms connected with a spacer enabling molecular recognition, have been intensively explored in host-guest chemistry in the past decades. They fall into the categories of molecular tweezers, clefts and clips, depending on the geometry allowing the recognition of various guests. The advances in synthesis and mechanistic studies have pushed them forward to pharmaceutical applications, such as neurodegenerative disorders, infectious diseases, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc. In this review, we provide a summary of the synthetic molecular tweezers, clefts and clips that have been reported for pharmaceutical applications. Their structures, mechanism of action as well as in vitro and in vivo results are described. Such receptors were found to selectively bind biological guests, namely, nucleic acids, sugars, amino acids and proteins enabling their use as biosensors or therapeutics. Particularly interesting are dynamic molecular tweezers which are capable of controlled motion in response to an external stimulus. They proved their utility as imaging agents or in the design of controlled release systems. Despite some issues, such as stability, cytotoxicity or biocompatibility that still need to be addressed, it is obvious that molecular tweezers, clefts and clips are promising candidates for several incurable diseases as therapeutic agents, diagnostic or delivery tools.

Synthesis and Guest Recognition of Switchable Pt-Salphen Based Molecular Tweezers

Molecular tweezers are artificial receptors that have an open cavity generated by two recognition units pre-organized by a spacer. Switchable molecular tweezers, using a stimuli-responsive spacer, are particularly appealing as prototypes of the molecular machines that combine mechanical motion and allosteric recognition properties. In this present study, the synthesis of switchable molecular tweezers composed of a central terpyridine unit substituted in 4,4″ positions by two Pt(II)-salphen complexes is reported. The terpyridine ligand can be reversibly converted upon Zn(II) coordination from a free ‘U’-shaped closed form to a coordinated ‘W’ open form. This new substitution pattern enables a reverse control of the mechanical motion compared to the previously reported 6,6″ substituted terpyridine-based tweezers. Guest binding studies with aromatic guests showed an intercalation of coronene in the cavity created by the Pt-salphen moieties in the closed conformation. The formation of 1:1 host-guest complex was investigated by a combination of NMR studies and DFT calculations.

Control over multiple molecular states with directional changes driven by molecular recognition

Recently, ligand-metal coordination, stimuli-responsive covalent bonds, and mechanically interlinked molecular constructs have been used to create systems with a large number of accessible structural states. However, accessing a multiplicity of states in sequence from more than one direction and doing so without the need for external energetic inputs remain as unmet challenges, as does the use of relatively weak noncovalent interactions to stabilize the underlying forms. Here we report a system based on a bispyridine-substituted calix[4]pyrrole that allows access to six different discrete states with directional control via the combined use of metal-based self-assembly and molecular recognition. Switching can be induced by the selective addition or removal of appropriately chosen ionic guests. No light or redox changes are required. The tunable nature of the system has been established through a combination of spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The findings illustrate a new approach to creating information-rich functional materials.

Switching Magnetic Properties by a Mechanical Motion

Switching magnetic properties have attracted a wide interest from inorganic chemist for the objectives of information storage and quantum computing at the molecular level. This review is focused on magnetic switches based on a mechanical motion, which is an innovative approach. Three main strategies to control magnetic properties by a mechanical motion have been developed in the literature and will be described. The first one (ligand-induced spin change) consists in modulating the ligand field strength by a configuration change of the ligand in spin-crossover complexes. The second one (coordination-induced spin-state switching) is based on a change in the coordination number of a metallic center that is triggered by the motion of one ligand. The third one uses the modulation of the exchange interaction between two spin-centers by a mechanical motion.

Reversible Redox Switching of Chromophoric Phenylmethylenepyrans by Carbon-Carbon Bond Making/Breaking

Electrochromic organic systems that can undergo substantial variation of their optical properties upon electron stimulus are of high interest for the development of functional materials. In particular, devices based on radical dimerization are appropriate because of the effectiveness and speed of carbon-carbon bond making/breaking. Phenylmethylenepyrans are organic chromophores which are well suited for such purposes since their oxidation leads to the reversible formation of bispyrylium species by radical dimerization. In this paper, we show that the redox and spectroscopic properties of phenylmethylenepyrans can be modulated by adequate variation of the substituting group on the para position of the phenyl moiety, as supported by DFT calculations. This redox switching is reversible over several cycles and is accompanied by a significant modification of the UV-vis spectrum of the chromophore, as shown by time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry in thin-layer conditions.
