Voltage-Driven Conformational Switching with Distinct Raman Signature in a Single-Molecule Junction

An Infrared Nanospectroscopy Technique for the Study of Electric-Field-Induced Molecular Dynamics

Static electric fields play a considerable role in a variety of molecular nanosystems as diverse as single-molecule junctions, molecules supporting electrostatic catalysis, and biological cell membranes incorporating proteins. External electric fields can be applied to nanoscale samples with a conductive atomic force microscopy (AFM) probe in contact mode, but typically, no structural information is retrieved. Here we combine photothermal expansion infrared (IR) nanospectroscopy with electrostatic AFM probes to measure nanometric volumes where the IR field enhancement and the static electric field overlap spatially. We leverage the vibrational Stark effect in the polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) for calibrating the local electric field strength. In the relevant case of membrane protein bacteriorhodopsin, we observe electric-field-induced changes of the protein backbone conformation and residue protonation state. The proposed technique also has the potential to measure DC currents and IR spectra simultaneously, insofar enabling the monitoring of the possible interplay between charge transport and other effects.

Atomic-precision control of plasmon-induced single-molecule switching in a metal-semiconductor nanojunction

Atomic-scale control of photochemistry facilitates extreme miniaturisation of optoelectronic devices. Localised surface plasmons, which provide strong confinement and enhancement of electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale, secure a route to achieve sub-nanoscale reaction control. Such local plasmon-induced photochemistry has been realised only in metallic structures so far. Here we demonstrate controlled plasmon-induced single-molecule switching of peryleneanhydride on a silicon surface. Using a plasmon-resonant tip in low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy, we can selectively induce the dissociation of the O-Si bonds between the molecule and surface, resulting in reversible switching between two configurations within the nanojunction. The switching rate can be controlled by changing the tip height with 0.1-Å precision. Furthermore, the plasmon-induced reactivity can be modified by chemical substitution within the molecule, suggesting the importance of atomic-level design for plasmon-driven optoelectronic devices. Thus, metal-single-molecule-semiconductor junctions may serve as a prominent controllable platform beyond conventional nano-optoelectronics.

Modulation of Charge Transport through Single Molecules Induced by Solvent-Stabilized Intramolecular Charge Transfer

The modulation of charge transport through single molecules can be established by using the intrinsic characteristics of molecules and the physical properties of their environment. Therefore, the impact of the solvent on the electronic properties of molecules in the junction and their charge transport behavior are of great interest. Here, for the first time, we focused on charge transport through dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN). This molecule shows unique behavior, specifically noticeable electronic structure modulations in bulk solvents, e.g., dual fluorescence in a polar environment. Using the scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) technique, we find an order of magnitude increase in conductance along with a second conductance value in polar solvents over nonpolar solvents. Inspired by the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) explanation of the famous dual fluorescence of DMABN in polar solvents, we hypothesize stabilization of twisted DMABN molecules in the junction in more polar solvents. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations using density functional theory (DFT) show that DMABN can twist in the junction and have a larger dipole moment compared to planar DMABN junction geometries, supporting the hypothesis. The nonequilibrium Green's function with the DFT approach (NEGF-DFT) is used to calculate the conductance throughout the AIMD trajectory, finding a significant change in the frontier orbitals and transmission function at large internal twisting angles, which can explain the dual conductance in polar solvents in STM-BJ experiments.

Stereoelectronic Switches of Single-Molecule Junctions through Conformation-Modulated Intramolecular Coupling Approaches

Stereoelectronic effects in single-molecule junctions have been widely utilized to achieve a molecular switch, but high-efficiency and reproducible switching remain challenging. Here, we demonstrate that there are three stable intramolecular conformations in the 9,10-diphenyl-9,10-methanoanthracen-11-one (DPMAO) systems due to steric effect. Interestingly, different electronic coupling approaches including weak coupling (through-space), decoupling, and strong coupling (through-bond) between two terminal benzene rings are accomplished in the three stable conformations, respectively. Theoretical calculations show that the molecular conductance of three stable conformations differs by more than 1 order of magnitude. Furthermore, the populations of the three stable conformations are highly dependent on the solvent effect and the external electric field. Therefore, an excellent molecular switch can be achieved using the DPMAO molecule junctions and external stimuli. Our findings reveal that modulating intramolecular electronic coupling approaches may be a useful manner to enable molecular switches with high switching ratios. This opens up a new route for building high-efficiency molecular switches in single-molecular junctions.

Dual Modulation of Single Molecule Conductance via Tuning Side Chains and Electric Field with Conjugated Molecules Entailing Intramolecular O•••S Interactions

Herein, single-molecule conductance studies of TBT1-TBT6 which entails 1,4-dithienylbenzene as the backbone and SMe groups as the anchoring units, with the scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM-BJ) technique, are reported. The molecular conductance of TBT1 with intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interactions is enhanced by about one order of magnitude in comparison to their analogue TBT2 (which contains alkyl instead of alkoxy chains). By replacing the methoxy groups in TBT1 with extending alkoxy chains in TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5, the molecular backbones become twisted and as a consequence the single-molecule conductance decreases gradually, showing that the intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interaction is influenced by the structural features of alkoxy chains. More importantly, the single-molecule conductance of TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5 can be boosted by increasing the electric field applied to the molecular junctions. Remarkably, the conductance of TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5 can be reversibly modulated due to the conformational changes between twisted and planar ones by varying the electric field. These results demonstrate that molecules with intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interactions have the potential for in situ control of the electrical properties of molecular-scale devices.

Investigation of SERS and Electron Transport Properties of Oligomer Phenylacetyne-3 Trapped in Gold Junctions

Molecular junctions hold great potential for future microelectronics and attract people’s attention. Here, we used density functional theory calculations (DFT) to investigate the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and electron transport properties of fully π-conjugated oligomers (phenylacetylene)-3 (OPE-3) trapped in gold junctions. The effects of charge injection, an applied electric field, and molecular deformation are considered. We found that a new Raman peak located at around 1400 cm⁻¹ appears after the injection of a charge, which agrees well with the experiment. The external electric field and configurational deformation hardly affect the Raman spectra, indicating that the electronic rather than the geometrical structure determines the Raman response. Nonequilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) calculations show that both the rotation of the benzene groups and an increased electrode distance largely reduced the conductivity of the studied molecular junctions. The present investigations provide valuable information on the effect of charging, electric field, and deformation on the SERS and conductivity of molecular junctions, helping the development of molecular devices.

Controlling Chemical Reactivity with Optimally Oriented Electric Fields: A Generalization of the Newton Trajectory Method

The use of oriented external electric fields (OEEF) as a tool to accelerate chemical reactions has recently attracted much interest. A new model to calculate the optimal OEEF of the least intensity to induce a barrierless chemical reaction path is presented. A suitable ansatz is provided by defining an effective potential energy surface (PES), which considers the unperturbed or original PES of the molecular reactive system and the action of a constant OEEF on the overall dipole moment of system. Based on a generalization of the Newton Trajectories (NT) method, it is demonstrated that the optimal OEEF can be determined upon locating a special point of the potential energy surface (PES), the so-called "optimal bond-breaking point" (optimal BBP), for which two different algorithms are proposed. At this point, the gradient of the original or unperturbed PES is an eigenvector of zero eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix of the effective PES. A thorough discussion of the geometrical aspects of the optimal BBP and the optimal OEEF is provided using a two-dimensional model, and numerical calculations of the optimal OEEF for a S_N2 reaction and the 1,3-dipolar retrocycloaddition of isoxazole to fulminic acid plus acetylene reaction serve as a proof of concept. The knowledge of the orientation of optimal OEEF provides a practical way to reduce the effective barrier of a given chemical process.

Single Molecules in Strong Optical Fields: A Variable-Temperature Molecular Junction Spectroscopy Setup

In order to advance the development of molecular electronic devices, it is mandatory to improve the understanding of electron transport and functionalities in single molecules, integrated in a well-defined environment. However, limited information can be obtained by solely analyzing I-V characteristics, whence multiparameter studies are required to obtain more information on such systems including chemical bonds, geometry, and intramolecular strain. Therefore, we developed an analytical method incorporating an optical near-field technique, which allows us to investigate single-molecule junctions at variable temperatures in strong optical fields. An apertureless near-field emitter acts as a counter electrode and a plasmonic waveguide to focus surface plasmon polaritons into the molecular junctions, where a strongly enhanced evanescent field is confined to only a few nanometers around the apex of the tip. The proof of concept, even at low temperatures, is demonstrated by simultaneously investigating electronic and optical features of the molecule p-terphenyl-4,4″-dithiol in dependence of its charge state. This multichannel method can be employed to analyze a variety of nearly unexplored properties in single-molecule junctions such as photoconductance and photocurrent generation and allows a characterization of the molecular junctions by spectroscopic means as well.

Electrostatic gating of single-molecule junctions based on the STM-BJ technique

The gating of charge transport through single-molecule junctions is considered a critical step towards molecular circuits but remains challenging. In this work, we report an electrostatic gating method to tune the conductance of single-molecule junctions using the scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM-BJ) technique incorporated with a back-gated chip as a substrate. We demonstrated that the conductance varied at different applied gating voltages (Vgs). The HOMO-dominated molecules show a decrease in conductance with an increase in Vg, and the LUMO-dominated molecules show the opposite trend. The measured conductance trends with Vg are consistent with the transition voltage spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, the transmission functions simulated from density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the finite element analysis all suggest that Vg changed the energy alignment of the molecular junction. This work provides a simple method for modulating the molecular orbitals' alignment relative to the Fermi energy (Ef) of metal electrodes to explore the charge transport properties at the single-molecule scale.

Twistable dipolar aryl rings as electric field actuated conformational molecular switches

The ability to control the chemical conformation of a system via external stimuli is a promising route for developing molecular switches. For eventual deployment as viable sub-nanoscale components that are compatible with current electronic device technology, conformational switching should be controllable by a local electric field (i.e. E-field gateable) and accompanied by a rapid and significant change in conductivity. In organic chemical systems the degree of π-conjugation is linked to the degree of electronic delocalisation, and thus largely determines the conductivity. Here, by means of accurate first principles calculations, we study the prototypical biphenyl based molecular system in which the dihedral angle between the two rings determines the degree of conjugation. In order to make this an E-field gateable system we create a net dipole by asymmetrically functionalising one ring with: (i) electron withdrawing (F, Br and CN), (ii) electron donating (NH2), and (iii) mixed (NH2/NO2) substituents. In this way, the application of an E-field interacts with the dipolar system to influence the dihedral angle, thus controlling the conjugation. For all considered substituents we consider a range of E-fields, and in each case extract conformational energy profiles. Using this data we obtain the minimum E-field required to induce a barrierless switching event for each system. We further extract the estimated switching speeds, the conformational probabilities at finite temperatures, and the effect of applied E-field on electronic structure. Consideration of these data allow us to assess which factors are most important in the design of efficient gateable electrical molecular switches.

Voltage-Induced Single-Molecule Junction Planarization

Probing structural changes of a molecule induced by charge transfer is important for understanding the physicochemical properties of molecules and developing new electronic devices. Here, we interrogate the structural changes of a single diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) molecule induced by charge transport at a high bias using scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM-BJ) techniques. Specifically, we demonstrate that application of a high bias increases the average nonresonant conductance of single Au-DPP-Au junctions. We infer from the increased conductance that resonant charge transport induces planarization of the molecular backbone. We further show that this conformational planarization is assisted by thermally activated junction reorganization. The planarization only occurs under specific electronic conditions, which we rationalize by ab initio calculations. These results emphasize the need for a comprehensive view of single-molecule junctions which includes both the electronic properties and structure of the molecules and the electrodes when designing electrically driven single-molecule motors.

A Comparative Study of the Semiconductor Behavior of Organic Thin Films: TCNQ-Doped Cobalt Phthalocyanine and Cobalt Octaethylporphyrin

The structure formed by cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) and cobalt octaethylporphyrin (CoOEP) with electron-acceptor tetracyano-π-quinodimethane (TCNQ), was studied by Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. According to theoretical calculations, both cobalt systems can establish dispersion forces related to TCNQ and also in both cases the link between them is built by means of hydrogen bonds. Based on the results of these DFT calculations, we developed experimental work: the organic semiconductors were doped, and the thermal evaporation technique was used to prepare semiconductor thin films of such compounds. The structure of the films was studied by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CoPc-TCNQ and CoOEP-TCNQ films were investigated by means of UV-Vis measurements. The results obtained were used to estimate the type of transitions and the optical bandgap. The results were compared to the previously calculated theoretical bandgap. The CoOEP-TCNQ film presented the smallest theoretical and experimental bandgap. Finally, the electrical properties of the organic semiconductors were evaluated from a PET (polyethylene terephthalate)/indium tin oxide (ITO)/cobalt macrocycle-TCNQ/silver (Ag) device we prepared. The CoOEP-TCNQ-based device showed an ohmic behavior. The device manufactured from CoPc-TCNQ also showed an ohmic behavior at low voltages, but significantly changed to SCLC (space-charge limited conductivity) at high voltage values.

Synthesis and Transport Studies of a Cofacial Porphyrin Cyclophane

Porphyrin cyclophane 1, consisting of two rigidly fixed but still movable cofacial porphyrins and exposing acetate-masked thiols in opposed directions of the macrocycle, is designed, synthesized, and characterized. The functional cyclophane 1, as pioneer of mechanosensitive 3D materials, forms stable single-molecule junctions in a mechanically controlled break-junction setup. Its reliable integration in a single-molecule junction is a fundamental prerequisite to explore the potential of these structures as mechanically triggered functional units and devices.

Optically Induced Molecular Logic Operations

Molecular electronics is a promising route for down-sizing electronic devices. Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy provides us a setup to probe current-driven molecular junctions that are considered as prototypes of molecular electronic devices. In this setup, the plasmonic tip concentrates optical fields to a degree that allows observing optical response of single molecules. Simultaneously, the tip can also induce a localized optical angular momentum, which has been seldomly considered in previous studies. Here, we propose that the induced optical angular momentum can interact with the probed molecule and strongly modify the response signal. Specifically, we demonstrate the ability to control the vibrational resonance of current-driven molecular junctions with the optical angular momentum. This precise control of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale allows us to demonstrate multiple logic operations. These results provide a fundamental understanding of future molecular electronics applications.

Optical probes of molecules as nano-mechanical switches

Molecular electronics promises a new generation of ultralow-energy information technologies, based around functional molecular junctions. Here, we report optical probing that exploits a gold nanoparticle in a plasmonic nanocavity geometry used as one terminal of a well-defined molecular junction, deposited as a self-assembled molecular monolayer on flat gold. A conductive transparent cantilever electrically contacts individual nanoparticles while maintaining optical access to the molecular junction. Optical readout of molecular structure in the junction reveals ultralow-energy switching of ∼50 zJ, from a nano-electromechanical torsion spring at the single molecule level. Real-time Raman measurements show these electronic device characteristics are directly affected by this molecular torsion, which can be explained using a simple circuit model based on junction capacitances, confirmed by density functional theory calculations. This nanomechanical degree of freedom is normally invisible and ignored in electrical transport measurements but is vital to the design and exploitation of molecules as quantum-coherent electronic nanodevices.

The development of molecular electronics at single molecule level calls for new tools beyond electrical characterisation. Kos et al. show an optical probe of molecular junctions in a plasmonic nanocavity geometry, which supports in situ interrogation of molecular configurations.

Simultaneous Suppression of π- and σ-Transmission in π-Conjugated Molecules

Molecular dielectric materials require ostensibly conflicting requirements of high polarizability and low conductivity. As previous efforts toward molecular insulators focused on saturated molecules, it remains an open question whether π- and σ-transport can be simultaneously suppressed in conjugated systems. Here, we demonstrate that there are conjugated molecules where the σ-transmission is suppressed by destructive σ-interference, while the π-transmission can be suppressed by a localized disruption of conjugation. Using density functional theory, we study the Landauer transmission and ballistic current density, which allow us to determine how the transmission is affected by various structural changes in the molecule. We find that in para-linked oligophenyl rings the σ-transmission can be suppressed by changing the remaining hydrogens to methyl groups due to the inherent gauche-like structure of the carbon backbone within a benzene ring, similar to what was previously seen in saturated systems. At the same time, the methyl groups fulfill a dual purpose as they modulate the twist angle between neighboring phenyl rings. When neighboring rings are orthogonal to each other, the transmission through both π- and σ-systems is effectively suppressed. Alternatively, breaking conjugation in a single phenyl ring by saturating two carbons atoms with two methyl substituents on each carbon, results in suppressed π- and σ-transport independent of dihedral angle. These two strategies demonstrate that methyl-substituted oligophenyls are promising candidates for the development of molecular dielectric materials.

Mechanism Study of Molecular Deformation of 2,2',5',2″-Tetramethylated p-Terphenyl-4,4″-dithiol Trapped in Gold Junctions

Molecular junctions hold great potential for future microelectronics, while the practical utilization has long been limited by the problem of conformational deformation during charge transport. Here we present a first-principles theoretical study on the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) characterization of the p-terphenyl-4,4″-dithiol molecule and its 2,2',5',2″-tetramethylated analogue in gold junctions to investigate the molecular deformation mechanism. The effects of charge injection and external electric field were examined, both of which could change π-conjugation by varying the dihedral angle between the central and ending rings (D_IPT). The induced significant structural deformations then change SERS responses. Only the SERS responses under an external electric field can account for the experimentally observed Raman spectra, and those of charge injections cannot. Moreover, applying a strong electric field could enlarge the conductivities of the two molecular junctions, agreeing well with experiments. This information not only elaborates that the electric field effect constitutes one important mechanism for molecular deformation but also provides useful insights for the control of charge transport in molecular junctions.

Electric-Field-Induced Connectivity Switching in Single-Molecule Junctions

The manipulation of molecule-electrode interaction is essential for the fabrication of molecular devices and determines the connectivity from electrodes to molecular components. Although the connectivity of molecular devices could be controlled by molecular design to place anchor groups in different positions of molecule backbones, the reversible switching of such connectivities remains challenging. Here, we develop an electric-field-induced strategy to switch the connectivity of single-molecule junctions reversibly, leading to the manipulation of different connectivities in the same molecular backbone. Our results offer a new concept of single-molecule manipulation and provide a feasible strategy to regulate molecule-electrode interaction.

Nanoscale Surface Redox Chemistry Triggered by Plasmon-Generated Hot Carriers

Direct photoexcitation of charges at a plasmonic metal hotspot produces energetic carriers that are capable of performing photocatalysis in the visible spectrum. However, the mechanisms of generation and transport of hot carriers are still not fully understood and under intense investigation because of their potential technological importance. Here, spectroscopic evidence proves that the reduction of dye molecules tethered to a Au(111) surface can be triggered by plasmonic carriers via a tunneling mechanism, which results in anomalous Raman intensity fluctuations. Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) helps to correlate Raman intensity fluctuations with temperature and with properties of the molecular spacer. In combination with electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, TERS results show that plasmon-induced energetic carriers can directly tunnel to the dye through the spacer. This organic spacer chemically isolates the adsorbate from the metal but does not block photo-induced redox reactions, which offers new possibilities for optimizing plasmon-induced photocatalytic systems.

Identifying the molecular adsorption site of a single molecule junction through combined Raman and conductance studies

Single-molecule junctions are ideal test beds for investigating the fundamentals of charge transport at the nanoscale. Conducting properties are strongly dependent on the metal-molecule interface geometry, which, however, is very poorly characterized due to numerous experimental challenges. We report on a new methodology for characterizing the adsorption site of single-molecule junctions through the combination of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), current-voltage (I-V) curve measurements, and density functional theory simulations. This new methodology discriminates between three different adsorption sites for benzenedithiol and aminobenzenethiol junctions, which cannot be identified by solo measurements of either SERS or I-V curves. Using this methodology, we determine the interface geometry of these two prototypical molecules at the junction and its time evolution. By modulating the applied voltage, we can change and monitor the distribution of adsorption sites at the junction.

Modularized Tuning of Charge Transport through Highly Twisted and Localized Single-Molecule Junctions

Although most molecular electronic devices and materials consist of a backbone with a planar structure, twisted molecular wires with reduced inter-ring π-orbital overlap offer a unique opportunity for the modularized fabrication of molecular electronic devices. Herein we investigate the modularized tuning of the charge transport through the localized molecules by designing highly twisted molecules and investigating their single-molecule charge transport using the scanning tunneling microscopy break junction technique. We find that the anthracenediyl-core molecule with a 90° inter-ring twist angle shows an unexpectedly high conductance value, which is five times higher than that of the phenylene-core molecule with a similar configuration, whereas the conductance of the delocalized planar molecule with an anthracenediyl core or a phenylene core is almost the same. Theoretical calculations revealed that highly twisted angles result in weak interactions between molecular building blocks, for which molecule orbitals are separated into localized blocks, which offers the chance for the modularized tuning of every single block. Our findings offer a new strategy for the design of future molecular devices with a localized electronic structure.

Voltage Stimulated Anion Binding of Metalloporphyrin-induced Crystalline 2D Nanoflakes

Voltage-stimulated redox-active materials have received significant attention in the field of organic electronics and sensor technology. Such stimuli-responsive materials trigger the formation of crystalline nanostructures and facilitate the design of efficient smart devices hitherto unknown. Herein, we report that free-base and metallo-tetratolylporphyrin-linked ferrocene derivatives (H₂ TTP-Fc and ZnTTP-Fc) undergo distinct proton/anion binding mechanism in CHCl₃ during bulk electrolysis at applied voltage of 1.4 V to give [H₄ TTP-Fc]⁺ Cl^- and H⁺ [(Cl)ZnTTP-Fc]^- followed by nanospheres and crystalline 2D nanoflakes formation, confirmed by SEM and TEM images, by methanol vapor diffusion (MVD) approach. Moreover, X-ray diffraction analysis suggest that protonated H₂ TTP-Fc aggregates exhibit amorphous nature, whereas H⁺ [(Cl)ZnTTP-Fc]^- depict crystalline nature from layer-by-layer arrangement of nanoflakes assisted by π-π stacking and ion-dipole interactions.

Probing Lewis acid-base interactions in single-molecule junctions

A novel strategy to regulate the tunneling mechanism for charge transport through an organoborane wire via Lewis acid-base interactions has been developed. A change from LUMO- to HOMO-dominated charge transport upon the addition of the fluoride is verified both experimentally and theoretically.
