Abstract
Conventional designing principal of electrocatalyst is focused on the electronic structure tuning, on which effectively promotes the electrocatalysis. However, as a typical kind of electrode-electrolyte interface reaction, the electrocatalysis performance is also closely dependent on the electrocatalyst interfacial micro-environment (IME), including pH, reactant concentration, electric field, surface geometry structure, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, etc. Recently, organic electro-oxidation reaction (OEOR), which simultaneously reduces the anodic polarization potential and produces value-added chemicals, has emerged as a competitive alternative to oxygen evolution reaction, and the role IME played in OEOR is receiving great interest. Thus, this article provides a timely review on IME and its applications toward OEOR. In this review, the IME for conventional gas-involving reactions, as a contrast, is first presented, and then the recent progresses of IME toward diverse typical OEOR are summarized; especially, some representative works are thoroughly discussed. Additionally, cutting-edge analytical methods and characterization techniques are introduced to comprehensively understand the role IME played in OEOR. In the last section, perspectives and challenges of IME regulation for OEOR are shared.

Abstract
The development of an efficient and straightforward method for cyanation of alcohols is of great value. However, the cyanation of alcohols always requires toxic cyanide sources. Herein, an unprecedented synthetic application of an isonitrile as a safer cyanide source in B(C6F5)3-catalyzed direct cyanation of alcohols is reported. With this approach, a wide range of valuable α-aryl nitriles was synthesized in good to excellent yields (up to 98%). The reaction can be scaled up and the practicability of this approach is further manifested in the synthesis of an anti-inflammatory drug, naproxen. Moreover, experimental studies were performed to illustrate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Nitrile derivatives are important building blocks in organic synthesis. Herein, we report the serendipitous discovery of an oxygen transfer reaction that produces hydroxyalkyl nitriles from the sequential dehydration and hydrolysis of haloalkyl amides. Product yields of up to 91% were achieved, and the phenylboronic acid was recovered as triphenylboroxine. The triphenylboroxine was reused as a catalyst without any loss of catalytic activity. A probable catalytic pathway was proposed based on control experiments and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Cyanation of benzylic C-N bonds is useful in the preparation of important α-aryl nitriles. The first general catalytic cyanation of α-(hetero)aryl amines, analogous to the Sandmeyer reaction of anilines, was developed using reductive cyanation with CO2/NH3. A broad array of α-aryl nitriles was obtained in high yields and regioselectivity by C-N cleavage of intermediates as ammonium salts. Good tolerance of functional groups such as ethers, CF3, F, Cl, esters, indoles, and benzothiophenes was achieved. Using 13CO2, a 13C-labeled tryptamine homologue (five steps, 31% yield) and Cysmethynil (six steps, 37% yield) were synthesized. Both electronic and steric effects of ligands influence the reactivity of alkyl nickel species with electrophilic silyl isocyanates and thus determine the reactivity and selectivity of the cyanation reaction. This work contributes to the understanding of the controllable activation of CO2/NH3 and provides the promising potential of the amine cyanation reaction in the synthesis of bio-relevant molecules.

Abstract
A practical method for the deoxygenation of α-hydroxyl carbonyl compounds under mild reaction conditions is reported here. The use of cheap and easy-to-handle Na2S·9H2O as the reductant in the presence of PPh3 and N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) enables the selective dehydroxylation of α-hydroxyl carbonyl compounds, including ketones, esters, amides, imides and nitrile groups. The synthetic utility is demonstrated by the late-stage deoxygenation of bioactive molecule and complex natural products.

Abstract
Engineering the reaction interface is necessary for advancing various electrocatalytic processes. However, most designed catalysts tend to be ineffective due to the inevitable structural reconstruction. Here we utilize that operando electrocatalysis variations (i.e., chalcogen leaching) manipulate the reactant interface toward amine electrooxidation. Taking chalcogen-doped Ni(OH)2 as an example, operando techniques uncover that chalcogens leach from the matrix and then adsorb on the surface of NiOOH as chalcogenates during the electrooxidation process. The charged chalcogenates will induce the local electric field that pushes the polar amines through the inner Helmholtz plane to enrich on the catalyst surface. Meanwhile, the polarization effect of chalcogenates and amines boost amino C-N bond activation for dehydrogenation into nitrile C≡N bonds. Under the promotion effect of surface-adsorbed chalcogenate ions, our catalysts display over 99.5% propionitrile selectivity at the low potential of 1.317 V with an ultrahigh current density. This finding highlights the use of operando changes of catalysts to rationally design efficient catalysts and further clarifies the underlying role of chalcogen atoms in the electrooxidation process.

Abstract
Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation represents a promising approach for artificial photosynthesis. However, the sluggish half-reaction of water oxidation significantly limits the efficiency of H2O2 generation. Here, a benzylamine oxidation with more favorable thermodynamics is employed as the half-reaction to couple with H2O2 generation in water by using defective zirconium trisulfide (ZrS3) nanobelts as a photocatalyst. The ZrS3 nanobelts with disulfide (S22-) and sulfide anion (S2-) vacancies exhibit an excellent photocatalytic performance for H2O2 generation and simultaneous oxidation of benzylamine to benzonitrile with a high selectivity of >99%. More importantly, the S22- and S2- vacancies can be separately introduced into ZrS3 nanobelts in a controlled manner. The S22- vacancies are further revealed to facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The S2- vacancies can significantly improve the electron conduction, hole extraction, and kinetics of benzylamine oxidation. As a result, the use of defective ZrS3 nanobelts yields a high production rate of 78.1 ± 1.5 and 32.0 ± 1.2 μmol h-1 for H2O2 and benzonitrile, respectively, under a simulated sunlight irradiation.

Abstract
Amidine-based optically active resolving agents for enantiomer separation of axially chiral 1,1′-biaryl-2,2′-diols have been developed. A strongly basic amidine bearing no substituents on its nitrogen atoms enables the formation of their diastereomeric salts upon being mixed with weakly acidic phenol derivatives. Enantiopure 1,1′-biaryl-2,2′-diols can be obtained in high yields after only one crystallization of their salts with the chiral amidine derived from dehydroabietic acid. X-ray crystallography revealed that the amidine moiety forms a salt with the phenol group and additional intermolecular NH/π interactions contribute to the efficient chiral recognition process. Enantioseparation of atropisomeric biphenols using a chiral amidine derived from dehydroabietic acid was reported. Only one crystallization of their mixture gave pure diastereomeric salts of biphenols from racemate.![]()

Abstract
The present work describes an unexpected and unique protocol for the iodine catalysed synthesis of o-ureidobenzonitriles using o-aminobenzamides and isothiocyanates via intramolecular rearrangement. The metal-free route achieved here is insensitive to moisture and applicable to the synthesis of a wide variety of o-ureidobenzonitriles with excellent yields even in a scalable fashion.

Abstract
Herein we report an abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene catalyzed dehydration of primary amides in the presence of a silane. This process bypasses the energy demanding 1,2-siloxane elimination step usually required for metal/silane catalyzed reactions. A detailed mechanistic cycle of this process has been proposed based on experimental evidence along with computational study.

Abstract
We developed an electrochemically enabled dehydrogenative annulation reaction of amides and alkynes for the synthesis of antitumor polycyclic isoquinolinones through a double C-H activation route. No external oxidant is required in this reaction, and electricity is used for Ru catalyst circulation. The most remarkable feature of this reaction is the effective improvement of product regioselectivity under mild electrolytic conditions in comparison with previously set strong oxidant conditions.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed dehydration of primary amides to nitriles efficiently proceeds under mild, aqueous conditions via the use of dichloroacetonitrile as a water acceptor. A key to the design of this transfer dehydration catalysis is the identification of an efficient water acceptor, dichloroacetonitrile, that preferentially reacts with amides over other polar functional groups with the aid of the Pd catalyst and makes the desired scheme exergonic, thereby driving the dehydration.

Abstract
Reported herein is the development of a simple but practical catalytic system for the selective reduction of amides with hydrosilane or hydrosiloxane. Low-cost and readily available triethylborane (1.0 M in THF), in combination with a catalytic amount of an alkali metal base, was found to catalyze the reduction of all three amide classes (tertiary, secondary, and primary amides) to form amines under mild conditions. In addition, the selective transformation of secondary amides to aldimines and primary amides to nitriles can also be achieved by using a proper combination of BEt3 and base. The scope of these BEt3-base-catalyzed amide hydrosilylation reactions has been explored in depth. Preliminary results of mechanistic studies suggest a modified Piers' silane Si-H···B activation mode wherein the hydride abstraction by BEt3 is promoted by the coordination of an alkoxide or hydroxide anion to the Si center.

Abstract
An effective phosphine-catalyzed protocol has been established for the syntheses of 1,3-diketones and nitriles from alkynones with oximes as hydroxide surrogates. This method features the use of a phosphine catalyst, compatibility with various functional groups and ambient temperature, which makes this approach very practical. A plausible mechanism was proposed.

Abstract
Reductive amination is one of the most frequently used transformations in organic synthesis. Herein, we developed a novel ruthenium nanoparticle embedded ordered mesoporous carbon catalyst (Ru-OMC) and a new hydrosilylation process for the synthesis of tertiary amines. We present a direct reductive amination of imines (C[double bond, length as m-dash]N bond) with aldehydes (C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond) using hydrosilane as the reducing reagent under mild conditions. Moreover, the Ru-OMC catalysts can be reused for up to 14 runs without noticeably losing activity.

Abstract
A regioselective and chemoselective method for catalytic synthesis of biologically interesting 5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthols by reduction of naphthols was described. The side aromatic hydrocarbons in naphthols were site-selectively reduced, using hydrosilanes in methanol, allowing for retaining functional phenol scaffolds intact. It presents a rare example of using low-cost and air-stable hydrosilane for catalytic reduction of unactivated aromatic hydrocarbons under mild conditions. This reaction is scalable and proceeds in high selectivity without the formation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthol byproducts with toleration of sensitive functionalities such as bromide, chloride, fluoride, ketone, ester, and amide.
