Energy-Degeneracy-Driven Covalency in Actinide Bonding

f-Block hydride complexes - synthesis, structure and reactivity

Complexes formed between the heaviest and lightest elements in the periodic table yield the f-block hydrides, a unique class of compounds with wide-ranging utility and interest, from catalysis to light-responsive materials and nuclear waste storage. Recent developments in syntheses and analytics, such as exploiting low-oxidation state metal ions and improvements in X-ray diffraction tools, have transformed our ability to understand, access and manipulate these important species. This perspective brings together insights from binary metal hydrides, with molecular solution phase studies on heteroleptic complexes and gas phase investigations. It aims to provide an overview of how the f-element influences hydride formation, structure and reactivity including the sometimes-surprising power of co-ligands to tune their behaviour towards a variety of applications.

Paramagnetic Properties of [AnIV(NO3)6]2- Complexes (An = U, Np, Pu) Probed by NMR Spectroscopy and Quantum Chemical Calculations

Actinide +IV complexes with six nitrates [AnIV(NO3)6]2- (An = Th, U, Np, and Pu) have been studied by 15N and 17O NMR spectroscopy in solution and first-principles calculations. Magnetic susceptibilities were evaluated experimentally using the Evans method and are in good agreement with the ab initio values. The evolution in the series of the crystal field parameters deduced from ab initio calculations is discussed. The NMR paramagnetic shifts are analyzed based on ab initio calculations. Because the cubic symmetry of the complex quenches the dipolar contribution, they are only of Fermi contact origin. They are evaluated from first-principles based on a complete active space/density functional theory (DFT) strategy, in good accordance with the experimental one. The ligand hyperfine coupling constants are deduced from paramagnetic shifts and calculated using unrestricted DFT. The latter are decomposed in terms of the contribution of molecular orbitals. It highlights two pathways for the delocalization of the spin density from the metallic open-shell 5f orbitals to the NMR active nuclei, either through the valence 5f hybridized with 6d to the valence 2p molecular orbitals of the ligands, or by spin polarization of the metallic 6p orbitals which interact with the 2s-based molecular orbitals of the ligands.

Multiconfigurational actinide nitrides assisted by double Möbius aromaticity

Understanding the bonding nature between actinides and main-group elements remains a key challenge in actinide chemistry due to the involvement of f orbitals. Herein, we propose a unique "aromaticity-assisted multiconfiguration" (AAM) model to elucidate the bonding nature in actinide nitrides (An2N2, An = Ac, Th, Pa, U). Each planar four-membered An2N2 with equivalent An-N bonds possesses four delocalized π electrons and four delocalized σ electrons, forming a new family of double Möbius aromaticity that contributes to the molecular stability. The unprecedented aromaticity further supports actinide nitrides to exhibit multiconfigurational characters, where the unpaired electrons (2, 4 or 6 in naked Th2N2, Pa2N2 or U2N2, respectively) either are spin-free and localized on metal centres or form metal-ligand bonds. High-level multiconfigurational computations confirm an open-shell singlet ground state for actinide nitrides, with small energy gaps to high spin states. This is consistent with the antiferromagnetic nature observed experimentally in uranium nitrides. The novel AAM bonding model can be authenticated in both experimentally identified compounds containing a U2N2 motif and other theoretically modelled An2N2 clusters and is thus expected to be a general chemical bonding pattern between actinides and main-group elements.

Progress in Nonaqueous Molecular Uranium Chemistry: Where to Next?

There is long-standing interest in nonaqueous uranium chemistry because of fundamental questions about uranium's variable chemical bonding and the similarities of this pseudo-Group 6 element to its congener d-block elements molybdenum and tungsten. To provide historical context, with reference to a conference presentation slide presented around 1988 that advanced a defining collection of top targets, and the challenge, for synthetic actinide chemistry to realize in isolable complexes under normal experimental conditions, this Viewpoint surveys progress against those targets, including (i) CO and related π-acid ligand complexes, (ii) alkylidenes, carbynes, and carbidos, (iii) imidos and terminal nitrides, (iv) homoleptic polyalkyls, -alkoxides, and -aryloxides, (v) uranium-uranium bonds, and (vi) examples of topics that can be regarded as branching out in parallel from the leading targets. Having summarized advances from the past four decades, opportunities to build on that progress, and hence possible future directions for the field, are highlighted. The wealth and diversity of uranium chemistry that is described emphasizes the importance of ligand-metal complementarity in developing exciting new chemistry that builds our knowledge and understanding of elements in a relativistic regime.

Contemporary Assessment of Energy Degeneracy in Orbital Mixing with Tetravalent f-Block Compounds

The f block is a comparatively understudied group of elements that find applications in many areas. Continued development of technologies involving the lanthanides (Ln) and actinides (An) requires a better fundamental understanding of their chemistry. Specifically, characterizing the electronic structure of the f elements presents a significant challenge due to the spatially core-like but energetically valence-like nature of the f orbitals. This duality led f-block scientists to hypothesize for decades that f-block chemistry is dominated by ionic metal-ligand interactions with little covalency because canonical covalent interactions require both spatial orbital overlap and orbital energy degeneracy. Recent studies on An compounds have suggested that An ions can engage in appreciable orbital mixing between An 5f and ligand orbitals, which was attributed to "energy-degeneracy-driven covalency". This model of bonding has since been a topic of debate because different computational methods have yielded results that support and refute the energy-degeneracy-driven covalency model. In this Viewpoint, literatures concerning the metal- and ligand-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of five tetravalent f-block systems─MO2 (M = Ln, An), LnF4, MCl62-, and [Ln(NP(pip)3)4]─are compiled and discussed to explore metal-ligand bonding in f-block compounds through experimental metrics. Based on spectral assignments from a variety of theoretical models, covalency is seen to decrease from CeO2 and PrO2 to TbO2 through weaker ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) interactions, while these LMCT interactions are not observed in the trivalent Ln sesquixodes until Yb. In comparison, while XANES characterization of AnO2 compounds is scarce, computational modeling of available X-ray absorption spectra suggests that covalency among AnO2 reaches a maximum between Am and Cm. Moreover, a decrease in covalency is observed upon changing ligands while maintaining an isostructural coordination environment from CeO2 to CeF4. These results could allude to the importance of orbital energy degeneracy in f-block bonding, but there are a variety of data gaps and conflicting results from different modeling techniques that need to be addressed before broad conclusions can be drawn.

Synthesis and Characterization of Isostructural Th(IV) and U(IV) Pyridine Dipyrrolide Complexes

A series of pyridine dipyrrolide actinide(IV) complexes, (MesPDPPh)AnCl2(THF) and An(MesPDPPh)2 (An = U, Th, where (MesPDPPh) is the doubly deprotonated form of 2,6-bis(5-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine), have been prepared. Characterization of all four complexes has been performed through a combination of solid- and solution-state methods, including elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic absorption and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Collectively, these data confirm the formation of the mono- and bis-ligated species. Time-dependent density functional theory has been performed on all four An(IV) complexes, providing insight into the nature of electronic transitions that are observed in the electronic absorption spectra of these compounds. Room temperature, solution-state luminescence of the actinide complexes is presented. Both Th(IV) derivatives exhibit strong photoluminescence; in contrast, the U(IV) species are nonemissive.

Overdestabilization vs Overstabilization in the Theoretical Analysis of f-Orbital Covalency

The complex nature of the f-orbital electronic structures and their interaction with the chemical environment pose significant computational challenges. Advanced computational techniques that variationally include scalar relativities and spin-orbit coupling directly at the molecular orbital level have been developed to address this complexity. Among these, variational relativistic multiconfigurational multireference methods stand out for their high accuracy and systematic improvement in studies of f-block complexes. Additionally, these advanced methods offer the potential for calibrating low-scaling electronic structure methods such as density functional theory. However, studies on the Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectra of the [Ce(III)Cl6]3- and [Ce(IV)Cl6]2- complexes show that time-dependent density functional theory with approximate exchange-correlation kernels can lead to inaccuracies, resulting in an overstabilization of 4f orbitals and incorrect assessments of covalency. In contrast, approaches utilizing small active space wave function methods may understate the stability of these orbitals. The results herein demonstrate the need for large active space, multireference, and variational relativistic methods in studying f-block complexes.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene to Actinide d-Based π-bonding Correlates with Observed Metal-Carbene Bond Length Shortening Versus Lanthanide Congeners

Comparison of bonding and electronic structural features between trivalent lanthanide (Ln) and actinide (An) complexes across homologous series' of molecules can provide insights into subtle and overt periodic trends. Of keen interest and debate is the extent to which the valence f- and d-orbitals of trivalent Ln/An ions engage in covalent interactions with different ligand donor functionalities and, crucially, how bonding differences change as both the Ln and An series are traversed. Synthesis and characterization (SC-XRD, NMR, UV-vis-NIR, and computational modeling) of the homologous lanthanide and actinide N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes [M(C5Me5)2(X)(IMe4)] {X = I, M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, U, Np, Pu; X = Cl, M = Nd; X = I/Cl, M = Nd, Am; and IMe4 = [C(NMeCMe)2]} reveals consistently shorter An-C vs Ln-C distances that do not substantially converge upon reaching Am3+/Nd3+ comparison. Specifically, the difference of 0.064(6) Å observed in the La/U pair is comparable to the 0.062(4) Å difference observed in the Nd/Am pair. Computational analyses suggest that the cause of this unusual observation is rooted in the presence of π-bonding with the valence d-orbital manifold in actinide complexes that is not present in the lanthanide congeners. This is in contrast to other documented cases of shorter An-ligand vs Ln-ligand distances, which are often attributed to increased 5f vs 4f radial diffusivity leading to differences in 4f and 5f orbital bonding involvement. Moreover, in these traditional observations, as the 5f series is traversed, the 5f manifold contracts such that by americium structural studies often find no statistically significant Am3+vs Nd3+ metal-ligand bond length differences.

Computational study of the interactions of tetravalent actinides (An = Th-Pu) with the α-Fe13 Keggin cluster

In recent years, evidence has emerged that actinide (An) uptake at the enhanced actinide removal plant (EARP) at the UK's Sellafield nuclear site occurs via An interactions with an α-Fe13 Keggin molecular cluster during ferrihydrite formation. We here study theoretically the substitution of aquo complexes of the actinides Th-Pu onto a Na-decorated α-Fe13 Keggin cluster using DFT at the PBE0 level. The optimised Pu-O and Pu-Fe distances are in good agreement with experiment and Na/An substitutions are significantly favourable energetically, becoming more so across the early 5f series, with the smallest and largest ΔrG° being for Th and Pu at -335.7 kJ mol-1 and -396.0 kJ mol-1 respectively. There is strong correlation between the substitution reaction energy and the ionic radii of the actinides (Δrε0R2 = 0.97 and ΔrG° R2 = 0.91), suggesting that the principal An-Keggin binding mode is ionic. Notwithstanding this result, Mulliken and natural population analyses reveal that covalency increases from Th-Pu in these systems, supported by analysis of the occupied Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals where enhanced An(5f)-O(2p) overlap is observed in the Np and Pu systems. By contrast, quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis shows that U-Keggin binding is the most covalent among the five actinides, in keeping with previous studies.

Unveiling Hidden Shake-Up Features in the Uranyl M4-Edge Spectrum

The M4,5-edge high energy resolution X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HR-XANES) spectra of actinyls offer valuable insights into the electronic structure and bonding properties of heavy-element complexes. To conduct a comprehensive spectral analysis, it is essential to employ computational methods that accurately account for relativistic effects and electron correlation. In this work, we utilize variational relativistic multireference configurational interaction methods to compute and analyze the X-ray M4-edge absorption spectrum of uranyl. By employing these advanced computational techniques, we achieve excellent agreement between the calculated spectral features and experimental observations. Moreover, the calculations unveil significant shake-up features, which arise from the intricate interplay between strongly correlated 3d core-electron and ligand excitations. This research provides important theoretical insights into the spectral characteristics of heavy-element complexes. Furthermore, it establishes the foundation for utilizing M4,5-edge spectroscopy as a means to investigate the chemical activities of such complexes. By leveraging this technique, we can gain a deeper understanding of the bonding behavior and reactivity of heavy-element compounds.

Understanding the Complexation Behavior of Carbamoylphosphine Oxide Ligands with Representative f-Block Elements

The complexation behavior of carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide ligands (CMPO), a bifunctional phosphine oxide, and their substituted derivatives with Ce(III), Eu(III), Th(IV), U(VI), and Am(III) was probed at the density functional theory (DFT) level. The enhanced extraction of trivalent rare earth elements by the 2-diphenylphosphinylethyl derivative over the conventional CMPO ligand is identified due to the availability of an additional P═O donor group in the former. In addition, the orbital and dispersive interactions play a vital role in the preference of Th(IV) over U(VI) during extraction using CMPO ligands. The better complexing ability of ligands having long alkyl chain substituents at the P atom is justified due to the observed enhanced dispersion interactions in these systems.

Carbene Complexes of Plutonium: Structure, Bonding, and Divergent Reactivity to Lanthanide Analogs

Organoplutonium chemistry was established in 1965, yet structurally authenticated plutonium-carbon bonds remain rare being limited to π-bonded carbocycle and σ-bonded isonitrile and hydrocarbyl derivatives. Thus, plutonium-carbenes, including alkylidenes and N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), are unknown. Here, we report the preparation and characterization of the diphosphoniomethanide-plutonium complex [Pu(BIPMTMSH)(I)(μ-I)]2 (1Pu, BIPMTMSH = (Me3SiNPPh2)2CH) and the diphosphonioalkylidene-plutonium complexes [Pu(BIPMTMS)(I)(DME)] (2Pu, BIPMTMS = (Me3SiNPPh2)2C) and [Pu(BIPMTMS)(I)(IMe4)2] (3Pu, IMe4 = C(NMeCMe)2), thus disclosing non-actinyl transneptunium multiple bonds and transneptunium NHC complexes. These Pu-C double and dative bonds, along with cerium, praseodymium, samarium, uranium, and neptunium congeners, enable lanthanide-actinide and actinide-actinide comparisons between metals with similar ionic radii and isoelectronic 4f5 vs 5f5 electron-counts within conserved ligand fields over 12 complexes. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that the orbital-energy and spatial-overlap terms increase from uranium to neptunium; however, on moving to plutonium the orbital-energy matching improves but the spatial overlap decreases. The bonding picture that emerges is more complex than the traditional picture of the bonding of lanthanides being ionic and early actinides being more covalent but becoming more ionic left to right. Multiconfigurational calculations on 2M and 3M (M = Pu, Sm) account for the considerably more complex UV/vis/NIR spectra for 5f5 2Pu and 3Pu compared to 4f5 2Sm and 3Sm. Supporting the presence of Pu═C double bonds in 2Pu and 3Pu, 2Pu exhibits metallo-Wittig bond metathesis involving the highest atomic number element to date, reacting with benzaldehyde to produce the alkene PhC(H)═C(PPh2NSiMe3)2 (4) and "PuOI". In contrast, 2Ce and 2Pr do not react with benzaldehyde to produce 4.

Perplexing EPR Signals from 5f36d1 U(II) Complexes

Metal complexes with unpaired electrons in orbitals of different angular momentum quantum numbers (e.g., f and d orbitals) are unusual and opportunities to study the interactions among these electrons are rare. X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) data were collected at <10 and 77 K on 10 U(II) complexes with 5f36d1 electron configurations and on some analogous Ce(II), Pr(II), and Nd(II) complexes with 4fn5d1 electron configurations. The U(II) compounds unexpectedly display similar two-line axial signals with g|| = 2.04 and g⊥ = 2.00 at 77 K. In contrast, U(II) complexes with 5f4 configurations are EPR-silent. Unlike U(II), the congenic 4f35d1 Nd(II) complex is EPR-silent. The Ce(II) complex with a 4f15d1 configuration is also EPR-silent, but a signal is observed for the Pr(II) complex, which has a 4f25d1 configuration. Whether or not an EPR signal is expected for these complexes depends on the coupling between f and d electrons. Since the coupling in U(II) systems is expected to be sufficiently strong to preclude an EPR signal from compounds with a 5f36d1 configuration, the results are viewed as unexplained phenomena. However, they do show that 5f36d1 U(II) samples can be differentiated from 5f4 U(II) complexes by EPR spectroscopy.

Are 4f-Orbitals Engaged in Covalent Bonding Between Lanthanides and Triphenylphosphine Oxide? An Oxygen K-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Study

The bonding covalency between trivalent lanthanides (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Eu, Gd) and triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) is studied by X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. The O, P, and Cl K-edge XAS for the single crystals of LnCl3(TPPO)3 were collected, and the spectra were interpreted based on DFT calculations. The O and P K-edge XAS spectra showed no significant change across the Ln series in the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes, unlike the Cl K-edge XAS spectra. The experimental O K-edge XAS spectra suggest no mixing between the Ln 4f- and the O 2p-orbitals in the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. DFT calculations indicate that the amount of the O 2p character per Ln-O bond is less than 0.1% in the Ln 4f-based orbitals in all of the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. The experimental spectra and theoretical calculations demonstrate that Ln 4f-orbitals are not engaged in the covalent bonding of lanthanides with TPPO, which contrasts the involvement of U 5f-orbitals in covalent bonding in the UO2Cl2(TPPO)2 complex. Results in this work reinforce our previous speculation that bonding covalency is potentially responsible for the extractability of monodentate organophosphorus ligands toward metal ions.

What is the nature of the uranium(iii)-arene bond?

Complexes of the form [U(η6-arene)(BH4)3] where arene = C6H6; C6H5Me; C6H3-1,3,5-R3 (R = Et, iPr, tBu, Ph); C6Me6; and triphenylene (C6H4)3 were investigated towards an understanding of the nature of the uranium-arene interaction. Density functional theory (DFT) shows the interaction energy reflects the interplay between higher energy electron rich π-systems which drive electrostatic contributions, and lower energy electron poor π-systems which give rise to larger orbital contributions. The interaction is weak in all cases, which is consistent with the picture that emerges from a topological analysis of the electron density where metrics indicative of covalency show limited dependence on the nature of the ligand - the interaction is predominantly electrostatic in nature. Complete active space natural orbital analyses reveal low occupancy U-arene π-bonding interactions dominate in all cases, while δ-bonding interactions are only found with high-symmetry and electron-rich C6Me6. Finally, both DFT and multireference calculations on a reduced, formally U(ii), congener, [U(C6Me6)(BH4)3]-, suggests the electronic structure (S = 1 or 2), and hence metal oxidation state, of such a species cannot be deduced from structural features such as arene distortion alone. We show that arene geometry strongly depends on the spin-state of the complex, but that in both spin-states the complex is best described as U(iii) with an arene-centred radical.

A guided ion beam investigation of UO2+ thermodynamics and f orbital participation: Reactions of U+ + CO2, UO+ + O2, and UO+ + CO

A guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometer was employed to study the reactions of U+ + CO2, UO+ + O2, and the reverse of the former, UO+ + CO. Reaction cross sections as a function of kinetic energy over about a three order of magnitude range were studied for all systems. The reaction of U+ + CO2 proceeds to form UO+ + CO with an efficiency of 118% ± 24% as well as generating UO2+ + C and UCO+ + O. The reaction of UO+ + O2 forms UO2+ in an exothermic, barrierless process and also results in the collision-induced dissociation of UO+ to yield U+. In the UO+ + CO reaction, the formation of UO2+ in an endothermic process is the dominant reaction, but minor products of UCO+ + O and U+ + (O + CO) are also observed. Analysis of the kinetic energy dependences observed provides the bond energies, D0(U+-O) = 7.98 ± 0.22 and 8.05 ± 0.14 eV, D0(U+-CO) = 0.73 ± 0.13 eV, and D0(OU+-O) = 7.56 ± 0.12 eV. The values obtained for D0(U+-O) and D0(OU+-O) agree well with the previously reported literature values. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental measurement of D0(U+-CO). An analysis of the oxide bond energies shows that participation of 5f orbitals leads to a substantial increase in the thermodynamic stability of UO2+ relative to ThO2+ and especially transition metal dioxide cations.

Periodic trends in trivalent actinide halides, phosphates, and arsenates

Due to the limited abundance of the actinide elements, computational methods, for now, remain an exclusive avenue to investigate the periodic trends across the actinide series. As every actinide element can exhibit a +3-oxidation state, we have explored model systems of gas-phase actinide trihalides, phosphates, and arsenates across the series to capture the periodic trends. By doing so, we were able to capture the periodic trends down the halogen series as well, and for the first time we are reporting a study on actinide astatides. Using scalar and spin-orbit relativistic Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, we have explored the variations in bond lengths, bond angles, and the charges on actinides (An). Despite the use of different sets of ligands, the trends remain similar. The properties of trivalent Pa, U, Np, and Pu are nearly identical; similar ionic radii could be the reason. The actinide elements show a tendency to exhibit a pre-Pu and a post-Cm behaviour, with Am acting as a switch. This could be due to the change in the behaviour from d-f-type to f-filling/d-type at around Pu-Cm in the actinides as already proposed in the previous literature. Bond lengths in the AnX3 increase down the halide series, and the atomic charges decrease on the actinide elements.

High Flux and Stability of Cationic Intercalation in Transition-Metal Oxides: Unleashing the Potential of Mn t2g Orbital via Enhanced π-Donation

Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) often struggle with challenges related to low electronic conductivity and unsatisfactory cyclic stability toward cationic intercalation. In this work, we tackle these issues by exploring an innovative strategy: leveraging heightened π-donation to activate the t2g orbital, thereby enhancing both electron/ion conductivity and structural stability of TMOs. We engineered Ni-doped layered manganese dioxide (Ni-MnO2), which is characterized by a distinctive Ni-O-Mn bridging configuration. Remarkably, Ni-MnO2 presents an impressive capacitance of 317 F g-1 and exhibits a robust cyclic stability, maintaining 81.58% of its original capacity even after 20,000 cycles. Mechanism investigations reveal that the incorporation of Ni-O-Mn configurations stimulates a heightened π-donation effect, which is beneficial to the π-type orbital hybridization involving the O 2p and the t2g orbital of Mn, thereby accelerating charge-transfer kinetics and activating the redox capacity of the t2g orbital. Additionally, the charge redistribution from Ni to the t2g orbital of Mn effectively elevates the low-energy orbital level of Mn, thus mitigating the undesirable Jahn-Teller distortion. This results in a subsequent decrease in the electron occupancy of the π*-antibonding orbital, which promotes an overall enhancement in structural stability. Our findings pave the way for an innovative paradigm in the development of fast and stable electrode materials for intercalation energy storage by activating the low orbitals of the TM center from a molecular orbital perspective.

Organolanthanide Complexes Containing Ln-CH3 σ-bonds: Unexpectedly Similar Hydrolysis Rates for Trivalent and Tetravalent Organocerium

We report the gas-phase preparation, isolation, and reactivity of a series of organolanthanides featuring the Ln-CH3 bond. The complexes are formed by decarboxylating anionic lanthanide acetates to form trivalent [LnIII(CH3)(CH3CO2)3]- (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Tb, Tm, Yb, Lu), divalent [EuII(CH3)(CH3CO2)2]-, and the first examples of tetravalent organocerium complexes featuring CeIV-Calkyl σ-bonds: [CeIV(O)(CH3)(CH3CO2)2]- and [CeIV(O)(CH3)(NO3)2]-. Attempts to isolate PrIV-CH3 and TbIV-CH3 were unsuccessful; however, fragmentation patterns reveal that the oxidation of LnIII to a LnIV-oxo-acetate complex is more favorable for Ln = Pr than for Ln = Tb. The rate of Ln-CH3 hydrolysis is a measure of bond stability, and it decreases from LaIII-CH3 to LuIII-CH3, with increasing steric crowding for smaller Ln stabilizing the harder Ln-CH3 bond against hydrolysis. [EuII(CH3)(CH3CO2)2]- engages in a much faster hydrolysis versus LnIII-CH3. The surprising observation of similar hydrolysis rates for CeIV-CH3 and CeIII-CH3 is discussed with respect to sterics, the oxo ligand, and bond covalency in σ-bonded organolanthanides.

Temperature Dependence of Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance and the Observation of Metal-Ligand Covalency in Actinide Complexes: 35Cl in Cs2UO2Cl4

We report a study of the temperature dependence of 35Cl nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) transition energies and spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) for 235U-depleted dicesium uranyl tetrachloride (Cs2UO2Cl4) aimed at elucidating electronic interactions between the uranium center and atoms in the equatorial plane of the UO22+ ion. The transition frequency decreases slowly with temperature below 75 K and with a more rapid linear dependence above this temperature. The spin-lattice relaxation time becomes shorter with temperature, and as temperatures increase, the T1 decrease becomes nearly quadratic. The observed trends are reproduced by a model that assumes phonon-induced fluctuations of the electric field gradient tensor and partial electron delocalization from Cl to U. The fit of the theoretical model to experimental data allows a Debye temperature of 96 K to be estimated. The generalization of this approach to investigations of covalency in actinide-ligand bonding is examined.

31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy as a Probe of Thorium-Phosphorus Bond Covalency: Correlating Phosphorus Chemical Shift to Metal-Phosphorus Bond Order

We report the use of solution and solid-state 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy combined with Density Functional Theory calculations to benchmark the covalency of actinide-phosphorus bonds, thus introducing 31P NMR spectroscopy to the investigation of molecular f-element chemical bond covalency. The 31P NMR data for [Th(PH2)(TrenTIPS)] (1, TrenTIPS = {N(CH2CH2NSiPri3)3}3-), [Th(PH)(TrenTIPS)][Na(12C4)2] (2, 12C4 = 12-crown-4 ether), [{Th(TrenTIPS)}2(μ-PH)] (3), and [{Th(TrenTIPS)}2(μ-P)][Na(12C4)2] (4) demonstrate a chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) ordering of (μ-P)3- > (═PH)2- > (μ-PH)2- > (-PH2)1- and for 4 the largest CSA for any bridging phosphido unit. The B3LYP functional with 50% Hartree-Fock mixing produced spin-orbit δiso values that closely match the experimental data, providing experimentally benchmarked quantification of the nature and extent of covalency in the Th-P linkages in 1-4 via Natural Bond Orbital and Natural Localized Molecular Orbital analyses. Shielding analysis revealed that the 31P δiso values are essentially only due to the nature of the Th-P bonds in 1-4, with largely invariant diamagnetic but variable paramagnetic and spin-orbit shieldings that reflect the Th-P bond multiplicities and s-orbital mediated transmission of spin-orbit effects from Th to P. This study has permitted correlation of Th-P δiso values to Mayer bond orders, revealing qualitative correlations generally, but which should be examined with respect to specific ancillary ligand families rather than generally to be quantitative, reflecting that 31P δiso values are a very sensitive reporter due to phosphorus being a soft donor that responds to the rest of the ligand field much more than stronger, harder donors like nitrogen.

Bounding [AnO2]2+ (An = U, Np) covalency by simulated O K-edge and An M-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy

Restricted active space simulations are shown to accurately reproduce and characterise both O K-edge and U M4,5-edge spectra of uranyl in excellent agreement with experimental peak positions and are extended to the Np analogue. Analysis of bonding orbital composition in the ground and O K-edge core-excited states demonstrates that metal contribution is underestimated in the latter. In contrast, An M4/5-edge core-excited states produce bonding orbital compositions significantly more representative of those in the ground state. Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules analysis is employed to explain the discrepancy between K- and M-edge data and demonstrates that the location of the core-hole impacts the pattern of electron localisation in core-excited states. An apparent contradiction to this behaviour in neptunyl is rationalised in terms interelectronic repulsion between the unpaired 5f electron and the excited core-electron.

A computational study on the coordination modes and electron absorption spectra of the complexes U(iv) with N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-diglycolamide and anions

Lipophilic N,N,N',N'-tetraalkyl-diglycolamides (TRDGAs) are promising extractants for actinides separation in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. Usually, in the extracted complexes of actinide and lanthanide ions of various oxidation states, the metal ions are completely surrounded by 2 or 3 TRDGA molecules, and the counter anions do not directly coordinate with them. In contrast, the extracted complexes of U(iv) from different media presenting different absorption spectra indicate that the anions (Cl- and NO3-) are directly involved in the coordination with U(iv) in the first inner sphere. Based on this exceptional observation in solvent extraction, taking the coordination of U(iv) with N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-diglycolamide (TMDGA, the smallest analogue of TRDGA) as the research object, we mimic the behaviours of counterions (Cl- and NO3-) and the water molecule during coordination of TMDGA with U(iv), especially combining with the simulation of the absorption spectra. We demonstrate that during the complexing of TMDGA to U(iv), the counterion Cl- will occupy one coordination number in the inner coordination sphere, and NO3- will occupy two by bidentate type; however, the ubiquitous water cannot squeeze in the inner coordination sphere. In addition, the coordination of Cl- and NO3- is proved to favour the extraction with the lower binding energy. Moreover, the simulation of absorption spectra is in good agreement with the observation from experiments, further verifying the aforementioned conclusion. This work in some way will provide guidance to improve the computation methods in research of actinides by mimicking the absorption spectra of actinide ions in different complexes.

Synthesis and comparison of iso-structural f-block metal complexes (Ce, U, Np, Pu) featuring η6-arene interactions

Reaction of the terphenyl bis(anilide) ligand [{K(DME)₂}₂L^Ar] (L^Ar = {C₆H₄[(2,6-ⁱPr²C₆H₃)NC₆H₄]₂}^2-) with trivalent chloride "MCl₃" salts (M = Ce, U, Np) yields two distinct products; neutral L^ArM(Cl)(THF) (1^M) (M = Np, Ce), and the "-ate" complexes [K(DME)₂][(L^Ar)Np(Cl)₂] (2^Np) or ([L^ArM(Cl)₂(μ-K(X)₂)])_∞ (2^Ce, 2^U) (M = Ce, U) (X = DME or Et₂O) (2^M). Alternatively, analogous reactions with the iodide [MI₃(THF)₄] salts provide access to the neutral compounds L^ArM(I)(THF) (3^M) (M = Ce, U, Np, Pu). All complexes exhibit close arene contacts suggestive of η⁶-interactions with the central arene ring of the terphenyl backbone, with 3^M comprising the first structurally characterized Pu η⁶-arene moiety. Notably, the metal-arene bond metrics diverge from the predicted trends of metal-carbon interactions based on ionic radii, with the uranium complexes exhibiting the shortest M-C_centroid distance in all cases. Overall, the data presents a systematic study of f-element M-η⁶-arene complexes across the early actinides U, Np, Pu, and comparison to cerium congeners.

P K-Edge XANES Calculations of Mineral Standards: Exploring the Potential of Theoretical Methods in the Analysis of Phosphorus Speciation

Phosphorus K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is a technique routinely employed in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phosphorus speciation in many scientific fields. The data analysis is, however, often performed in a qualitative manner, relying on linear combination fitting protocols or simple comparisons between the experimental data and the spectra of standards, and little quantitative structural and electronic information is thus retrieved. Herein, we report a thorough theoretical investigation of P K-edge XANES spectra of NaH₂PO₄·H₂O, AlPO₄, α-Ti(HPO₄)₂·H₂O, and FePO₄·2H₂O showing excellent agreement with the experimental data. We find that different coordination shells of phosphorus, up to a distance of 5-6 Å from the photoabsorber, contribute to distinct features in the XANES spectra. This high structural sensitivity enables P K-edge XANES spectroscopy to even distinguish between nearly isostructural crystal phases of the same compound. Additionally, we provide a rationalization of the pre-edge transitions observed in the spectra of α-Ti(HPO₄)₂·H₂O and FePO₄·2H₂O through density of states calculations. These pre-edge transitions are found to be enabled by the covalent mixing of phosphorus s and p orbitals and titanium or iron d orbitals, which happens even though neither metal ion is directly bound to phosphorus in the two systems.

Architector for high-throughput cross-periodic table 3D complex building

Rare-earth and actinide complexes are critical for a wealth of clean-energy applications. Three-dimensional (3D) structural generation and prediction for these organometallic systems remains a challenge, limiting opportunities for computational chemical discovery. Here, we introduce Architector, a high-throughput in-silico synthesis code for s-, p-, d-, and f-block mononuclear organometallic complexes capable of capturing nearly the full diversity of the known experimental chemical space. Beyond known chemical space, Architector performs in-silico design of new complexes including any chemically accessible metal-ligand combinations. Architector leverages metal-center symmetry, interatomic force fields, and tight binding methods to build many possible 3D conformers from minimal 2D inputs including metal oxidation and spin state. Over a set of more than 6,000 x-ray diffraction (XRD)-determined complexes spanning the periodic table, we demonstrate quantitative agreement between Architector-predicted and experimentally observed structures. Further, we demonstrate out-of-the box conformer generation and energetic rankings of non-minimum energy conformers produced from Architector, which are critical for exploring potential energy surfaces and training force fields. Overall, Architector represents a transformative step towards cross-periodic table computational design of metal complex chemistry.

Nonaqueous Electrochemistry of Uranium Complexes: A Guide to Structure-Reactivity Tuning

Uranium complexes can be stabilized in a wide range of oxidation states, ranging from U^II to U^VI and a very recent example of a U^I complex. This review provides a comprehensive summary of electrochemistry data reported on uranium complexes in nonaqueous electrolyte, to serve as a clear point of reference for newly synthesized compounds, and to evaluate how different ligand environments influence experimentally observed electrochemical redox potentials. Data for over 200 uranium compounds are reported, together with a detailed discussion of trends observed across larger series of complexes in response to ligand field variations. In analogy to the traditional Lever parameter, we utilized the data to derive a new uranium-specific set of ligand field parameters ^UE_L(L) that more accurately represent metal-ligand bonding situations than previously existing transition metal derived parameters. Exemplarily, we demonstrate ^UE_L(L) parameters to be useful for the prediction of structure-reactivity correlations in order to activate specific substrate targets.

Periodic Trends in the Stabilization of Actinyls in Their Higher Oxidation States Using Pyrrophen Ligands

Owing to the prominent existence and unique chemistry of actinyls, their complexation with suitable ligands is of significant interest. The complexation of high-valent actinyl moieties (An = U, Np, Pu and Am) with the acyclic sal-porphyrin analogue called "pyrrophen" (L₍₁₎) and its dimethyl derivative (L₍₂₎) with four nitrogen and two oxygen donor atoms was studied using relativistic density functional theory. Based on the periodic trends, the [U^VO₂-L₍₁₎/L₍₂₎]^1- complexes show shorter bond lengths and higher bond orders that increase across the series of pentavalent actinyl complexes mainly due to the localization of the 5f orbitals. Among the hexavalent complexes, the [U^VIO₂-L₍₁₎/L₍₂₎] complexes have the shortest bonds. Following the uranyl complex, due to the plutonium turn, the [Am^VIO₂-L₍₁₎/L₍₂₎] complexes exhibit comparable properties with those of the former. Charge analysis suggests the complexation to be facilitated through ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mainly through σ donation. Thermodynamic feasibility of complexation was modeled using hydrated actinyl moieties in aqueous medium and was found to be spontaneous. The dimethylated pyrrophen (L₍₂₎) shows higher magnitudes of thermodynamic parameters indicating increased feasibility compared to the unsubstituted ligand (L₍₁₎). Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) along with extended transition-state-natural orbitals for chemical valence theory (ETS-NOCV) analysis shows that the dominant electrostatic contributions decrease across the series and are counteracted by Pauli repulsion. Slight but considerable covalency is provided to hexavalent actinyl complexes by orbital contributions; this was confirmed by molecular orbital (MO) analysis that suggests strong covalency in americyl (VI) complexes. In addition to the pentavalent and hexavalent actinyl moieties, heptavalent actinyl species of neptunyl, plutonyl, and americyl were studied. Beyond the influence of the charges, the geometric and electronic properties point to the stabilization of neptunyl (VII) in the pyrrophen ligand environment, while the others shift to a lower (+VI) and relatively stable OS on complexation.

Evaluating f-Orbital Participation in the UV═E Multiple Bonds of [U(E)(NR2)3] (E = O, NSiMe3, NAd; R = SiMe3)

The reaction of 1 equiv of 1-azidoadamantane with [U^III(NR₂)₃] (R = SiMe₃) in Et₂O results in the formation of [U^V(NR₂)₃(NAd)] (1, Ad = 1-adamantyl) in good yields. The electronic structure of 1, as well as those of the related U(V) complexes, [U^V(NR₂)₃(NSiMe₃)] (2) and [U^V(NR₂)₃(O)] (3), were analyzed with EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, NIR-visible spectroscopy, and crystal field modeling. This analysis revealed that, within this series of complexes, the steric bulk of the E^2- (E═O, NR) ligand is the most important factor in determining the electronic structure. In particular, the increasing steric bulk of this ligand, on moving from O^2- to [NAd]^2-, results in increasing U═E distances and E-U-N_amide angles. These changes have two principal effects on the resulting electronic structure: (1) the increasing U═E distances decreases the energy of the f_σ orbital, which is primarily σ* with respect to the U═E bond, and (2) the increasing E-U-N_amide angles increases the energy of f_δ, due to increasing antibonding interactions with the amide ligands. As a result of the latter change, the electronic ground state for complexes 1 and 2 is primarily f_φ in character, whereas the ground state for complex 3 is primarily f_δ.

Trends in the Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of a Series of Porphyrinoid-Uranyl Complexes

In this paper, we have explored the relativistic density functional theory study on a series of deprotonated porphyrinoid (Lⁿ) complexes of uranyl to investigate the geometrical structures and chemical bonding. The ligands bound with uranyl in the 1:1 complexes [UO₂(Lⁿ)]^x (n = 4, 5, 6; x = 0, -1, -2), showing more thermodynamic stability for "in-cavity" structures of L⁵ and L⁶ than that of the "side-on" structure of L⁴ and an increase in stability with the increase of negative charges, L^2- < L^3- < L^4-. Among the six ligands, the cyclo[6]pyrrole presents the best selectivity toward uranyl. Based on chemical bonding analyses, the U-N_L bond in the in-cavity complexes adopts a typical dative N_L → U bond with mainly ionic bonding and significant covalency, which comes from the significant orbital interaction of U 5f_ϕ6d_δ7s hybrid AOs and N_L 2p-based MOs. This work provides a systematic understanding of the coordination chemistry in uranyl pyrrole-containing macrocycle complexes and the nature of chemical bonding in such systems, which may provide inspirations for the future design of synthetic targets that could be relevant to actinide separations or in the remediation of spent nuclear fuel.

Covalent bond shortening and distortion induced by pressurization of thorium, uranium, and neptunium tetrakis aryloxides

Covalency involving the 5f orbitals is regularly invoked to explain the reactivity, structure and spectroscopic properties of the actinides, but the ionic versus covalent nature of metal-ligand bonding in actinide complexes remains controversial. The tetrakis 2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxide complexes of Th, U and Np form an isostructural series of crystal structures containing approximately tetrahedral MO₄ cores. We show that up to 3 GPa the Th and U crystal structures show negative linear compressibility as the OMO angles distort. At 3 GPa the angles snap back to their original values, reverting to a tetrahedral geometry with an abrupt shortening of the M-O distances by up to 0.1 Å. The Np complex shows similar but smaller effects, transforming above 2.4 GPa. Electronic structure calculations associate the M-O bond shortening with a change in covalency resulting from increased contributions to the M-O bonding by the metal 6d and 5f orbitals, the combination promoting MO₄ flexibility at little cost in energy.

The mechanism of Fe induced bond stability of uranyl(v)

The stabilization of uranyl(v) (UO₂ ^{1 +} ) by Fe(ii) in natural systems remains an open question in uranium chemistry. Stabilization of U^VO₂ ¹⁺ by Fe(ii) against disproportionation was also demonstrated in molecular complexes. However, the relation between the Fe(ii) induced stability and the change of the bonding properties have not been elucidated up to date. We demonstrate that U(v) - oaxial bond covalency decreases upon binding to Fe(ii) inducing redirection of electron density from the U(v) - oaxial bond towards the U(v) - equatorial bonds thereby increasing bond covalency. Our results indicate that such increased covalent interaction of U(v) with the equatorial ligands resulting from iron binding lead to higher stability of uranyl(v). For the first time a combination of U M_4,5 high energy resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure (HR-XANES) and valence band resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (VB-RIXS) and ab initio multireference CASSCF and DFT based computations were applied to establish the electronic structure of iron-bound uranyl(v).

Transuranium Sulfide via the Boron Chalcogen Mixture Method and Reversible Water Uptake in the NaCuTS3 Family

The behavior of 5f electrons in soft ligand environments makes actinides, and especially transuranium chalcogenides, an intriguing class of materials for fundamental studies. Due to the affinity of actinides for oxygen, however, it is a challenge to synthesize actinide chalcogenides using non-metallic reagents. Using the boron chalcogen mixture method, we achieved the synthesis of the transuranium sulfide NaCuNpS₃ starting from the oxide reagent, NpO₂. Via the same synthetic route, the isostructural composition of NaCuUS₃ was synthesized and the material contrasted with NaCuNpS₃. Single crystals of the U-analogue, NaCuUS₃, were found to undergo an unexpected reversible hydration process to form NaCuUS₃·xH₂O (x ≈ 1.5). A large combination of techniques was used to fully characterize the structure, hydration process, and electronic structures, specifically a combination of single crystal, powder, high temperature powder X-ray diffraction, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, infrared, and inductively coupled plasma spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis, and density functional theory calculations. The outcome of these analyses enabled us to determine the composition of NaCuUS₃·xH₂O and obtain a structural model that demonstrated the retention of the local structure within the [CuUS₃]^- layers throughout the hydration-dehydration process. Band structure, density of states, and Bader charge calculations for NaCuUS₃, NaCuUS₃·xH₂O, and NaCuNpS₃ along with X-ray absorption near edge structure, UV-vis-NIR, and work function measurements on ACuUS₃ (A = Na, K, and Rb) and NaCuUS₃·xH₂O samples were carried out to demonstrate that electronic properties arise from the [CuTS₃]^- layers and show surprisingly little dependence on the interlayer distance.

Dipolar and Contact Paramagnetic NMR Chemical Shifts in AnIV Complexes with Dipicolinic Acid Derivatives

Actinide +IV complexes (An^IV = Th^IV, U^IV, Np^IV, and Pu^IV) with two dipicolinic acid derivatives (DPA and Et-DPA) have been studied by ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopies and first-principles calculations. The Fermi contact and dipolar contributions to the actinide-induced shifts (AIS) are evaluated from a temperature dependence analysis, combined with ab initio results. It allows an experimental estimation of the axial anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility Δχ_ax and of the hyperfine coupling constants of the NMR-active nuclei. Due to the compactness of the coordination sphere, the magnetic anisotropy of the paramagnetic center is small, and this makes the contact contribution to be the dominant one, even on the remote atoms. The sign of the hyperfine coupling constants and related spin densities is alternating on the nuclei of the ligand cycle, denoting a preponderant spin polarization mechanism. This is well reproduced by unrestricted density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Those values are furthermore slightly decreasing in the actinide series, which indicates a small decrease of the covalency from U^IV to Pu^IV.

Carbene Complexes of Neptunium

Since the advent of organotransuranium chemistry six decades ago, structurally verified complexes remain restricted to π-bonded carbocycle and σ-bonded hydrocarbyl derivatives. Thus, transuranium-carbon multiple or dative bonds are yet to be reported. Here, utilizing diphosphoniomethanide precursors we report the synthesis and characterization of transuranium-carbene derivatives, namely, diphosphonio-alkylidene- and N-heterocyclic carbene–neptunium(III) complexes that exhibit polarized-covalent σ²π² multiple and dative σ² single transuranium-carbon bond interactions, respectively. The reaction of [Np^IIII₃(THF)₄] with [Rb(BIPM^TMSH)] (BIPM^TMSH = {HC(PPh₂NSiMe₃)₂}^1–) affords [(BIPM^TMSH)Np^III(I)₂(THF)] (3Np) in situ, and subsequent treatment with the N-heterocyclic carbene {C(NMeCMe)₂} (I^Me4) allows isolation of [(BIPM^TMSH)Np^III(I)₂(I^Me4)] (4Np). Separate treatment of in situ prepared 3Np with benzyl potassium in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) affords [(BIPM^TMS)Np^III(I)(DME)] (5Np, BIPM^TMS = {C(PPh₂NSiMe₃)₂}^2–). Analogously, addition of benzyl potassium and I^Me4 to 4Np gives [(BIPM^TMS)Np^III(I)(I^Me4)₂] (6Np). The synthesis of 3Np–6Np was facilitated by adopting a scaled-down prechoreographed approach using cerium synthetic surrogates. The thorium(III) and uranium(III) analogues of these neptunium(III) complexes are currently unavailable, meaning that the synthesis of 4Np–6Np provides an example of experimental grounding of 5f- vs 5f- and 5f- vs 4f-element bonding and reactivity comparisons being led by nonaqueous transuranium chemistry rather than thorium and uranium congeners. Computational analysis suggests that these Np^III=C bonds are more covalent than U^III=C, Ce^III=C, and Pm^III=C congeners but comparable to analogous U^IV=C bonds in terms of bond orders and total metal contributions to the M=C bonds. A preliminary assessment of Np^III=C reactivity has introduced multiple bond metathesis to transuranium chemistry, extending the range of known metallo-Wittig reactions to encompass actinide oxidation states III-VI.

Covalency in AnCl2 (An = Th-No)

A potential connection has previously been proposed between the emergence of unexpected covalent behaviour in various transcurium complexes and the increasing stability of the +2 oxidation state in the later members of the actinide series. We recently used computational methods to study AnCl₃, finding evidence for energy degeneracy driven covalency in the later actinides, and here present a comparative study of AnCl₂. The An-Cl bond lengths of the latter divide into two data sets; Th-Np, Cm, Bk and Pu, Am, Cf-No. On average the An-Cl bond length decreases for both sets but, with significant increases between Np and Pu, and between Bk and Cf, unlike the former group (Pu, Am, Cf-No)Cl₂ have significantly larger lengths than the corresponding trichlorides. Using a range of Natural Bond Orbital (NBO), Natural Resonance Theory (NRT) and Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules (QTAIM) metrics, the covalency of the dichloride bonds is analysed. We find that the first group of dichlorides are similar to their trichloride counterparts and possess significantly more covalent bonds than (Pu, Am, Cf-No)Cl₂. We believe this change in covalent behaviour across the series for the dichlorides is due to a decreased involvement of the 6d orbital in the later elements (as a result of the f-d excitation energy exceeding the d-stabilisation energy of the actinide ions in question). Moreover, we find that unlike the trichlorides, where the QTAIM delocalisation index indicates that covalency plateaus/moderately increases, An-Cl covalency decreases across the second half of the series for AnCl₂. We attribute this difference in behaviour to a lack of significant energy degeneracy driven covalency for the dichlorides, with the energy difference between the dichlorides' β 5f and 3p Natural Atomic Orbitals being larger than for the trichlorides. Hence we find it is not the presence of a stable +2 oxidation state, but instead the extent of energy matching between the actinide 5f orbitals and the ligand 3p, that drives covalency in the transcurium chlorides.

Relativistic Effects in Modeling the Ligand K-Edge X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure of Uranium Complexes

Accurate modeling of the complex electronic structure of actinide complexes requires full inclusion of relativistic effects. In this study, we examine the effect of explicit inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) versus scalar relativistic effects on the predicted spectra for heavy-element complexes. In this study, we employ a relativistic two-component Hamiltonian in the X2C form with all of the electrons in the system being considered explicitly to compare and contrast with previous studies that included the relativistic effects by means of relativistic effective core potentials (RECPs). A few uranium complexes are chosen as model systems. Comparison of the computed Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectra with experimental data shows significantly improved agreement when a variational relativistic treatment of SOC is performed. In particular, we note the importance of SOC terms to obtain not only correct transition energies but also correct intensities for these heavy-element complexes because of the redistribution of ligand bonding character among the valence MOs. While RECPs generally agree well with all-electron scalar relativistic calculations, there are some differences in the predicted spectra of open-shell systems. These methods are still suitable for broad application to analyze the qualitative nature of transitions in X-ray absorption spectra, but caution is recommended for quantitative analysis, as SOC can be non-negligible for both open- and closed-shell heavy-element systems.

In situ beam reduction of Pu(IV) and Bk(IV) as a route to trivalent transuranic coordination complexes with hydroxypyridinone chelators

The solution-state interactions of plutonium and berkelium with the octadentate chelator 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) (343-HOPO) were investigated and characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which revealed in situ reductive decomposition of the tetravalent species of both actinide metals to yield Pu(III) and Bk(III) coordination complexes. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements were the first indication of in situ synchrotron redox chemistry as the Pu threshold and white-line position energies for Pu-343-HOPO were in good agreement with known diagnostic Pu(III) species, whereas Bk-343-HOPO results were found to mirror the XANES behavior of Bk(III)-DTPA. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure results revealed An-O_HOPO bond distances of 2.498 (5) and 2.415 (2) Å for Pu and Bk, respectively, which match well with bond distances obtained for trivalent actinides and 343-HOPO via density functional theory calculations. Pu(III)- and Bk(III)-343-HOPO data also provide initial insight into actinide periodicity as they can be compared with previous results with Am(III)-, Cm(III)-, Cf(III)-, and Es(III)-343-HOPO, which indicate there is likely an increase in 5f covalency and heterogeneity across the actinide series.

Assessment of Various Density Functional Theory Methods for Finding Accurate Structures of Actinide Complexes

Density functional theory (DFT) is a widely used computational method for predicting the physical and chemical properties of metals and organometals. As the number of electrons and orbitals in an atom increases, DFT calculations for actinide complexes become more demanding due to increased complexity. Moreover, reasonable levels of theory for calculating the structures of actinide complexes are not extensively studied. In this study, 38 calculations, based on various combinations, were performed on molecules containing two representative actinides to determine the optimal combination for predicting the geometries of actinide complexes. Among the 38 calculations, four optimal combinations were identified and compared with experimental data. The optimal combinations were applied to a more complicated and practical actinide compound, the uranyl complex (UO₂(2,2′-(1E,1′E)-(2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-dyl)bis(azanylylidene)(CH₃OH)), for further confirmation. The corresponding optimal calculation combination provides a reasonable level of theory for accurately optimizing the structure of actinide complexes using DFT.

X-ray absorption spectra of f-element complexes: insight from relativistic multiconfigurational wavefunction theory

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, coupled with ab initio calculations, has emerged as the state-of-the-art tool for elucidating the metal-ligand bonding in f-element complexes. This highlight presents recent efforts in calculating XANES spectra of lanthanide and actinide compounds with relativistic multiconfiguration wavefunction approaches that account for differences in donation bonding in the ground state (GS) versus a core-excited state (ES), multiplet effects, and spin-orbit-coupling. With the GS and ES wavefunctions available, including spin-orbit effects, an arsenal of chemical bonding tools that are popular among chemists can be applied to rationalize the observed intensities in terms of covalent bonding.

Bond Dissociation Energies Reveal the Participation of d Electrons in f-Element Halide Bonding

Bond dissociation energies (BDEs) reported in the literature for lanthanide monofluorides and lanthanide monochlorides LnX, where X = F or Cl, exhibit substantial irregular variations across the Ln series. It is demonstrated here that correlations of these variations with reported experimentally based atomic energies to prepare the Ln constituent for bonding reveal the nature of the bonding. Whereas some molecular characteristics are well understood in the context of highly ionic bonding, with LnX considered to be (Ln⁺)(X^-), some significant variations in BDEs are not well rationalized simply by ionization to convert Ln to Ln⁺ for bonding. Focusing here on lanthanide monofluorides LnF, a consideration of alternative Ln preparation schemes shows that a particularly good rationalization of BDEs is obtained by invoking the participation of a lanthanide 5d electron in bonding. This 5d participation could be in ionic (Ln⁺)(F^-) via π-donation from F^- 2p to empty Ln⁺ 5d orbitals or in covalent π-bonded Ln:F via polarization from Ln 5d to F 2p, with these ionic and polar covalent perspectives ultimately being equivalent. The inference of lanthanide 5d involvement suggests that the valence 4f and 6s electrons do not effectively participate in some key aspects of the bonding, presumably due to poor spatial overlap with F 2p orbitals. An extension to actinide monofluorides, AnF, assumes analogous ionic or polar covalent bonding involving a valence 6d electron and results in predictions for BDEs that include a general decrease from left to right across the series, except for a distinctive local minimum at AmF. Determining the BDE for AmF would serve to evaluate the predictions and the underlying assumption of 6d bonding. The BDE assessments/predictions for neutral monofluorides, LnF and AnF, are also applied to cationic LnF⁺ and AnF⁺, and it is noted that the approach can be directly extended to f-element monochlorides, monobromides, and monoiodides.

Covalency between the uranyl ion and dithiophosphinate by sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory

The dithiophosphinic acids (HS2PR2) have been used for the selective separation of trivalent actinides (AnIII) from lanthanides (LnIII) over the past decades. The substituents on the dithiophosphinic acids dramatically impact the separation performance, but the mechanism is still open for debate. In this work, two dithiophosphinic acids with significantly different AnIII/LnIII separation performance, i.e. diphenyl dithiophosphinic acid (HS2PPh2) and bis(ortho-trifluoromethylphenyl) dithiophosphinic acid [HS2P(o-CF3C6H4)2], are employed to understand the substituent effect on the bonding covalency between the S2PR2- anions (R = Ph and o-CF3C6H4) and the uranyl ion by sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in combination with density functional theory calculations. The two UO2(S2PR2)(EtOH) complexes display similar XAS spectra, in which the first pre-edge feature with an intensity of 0.16 is entirely attributed to the transitions from S 1s orbitals to the unoccupied molecular orbitals due to the mixing between U 5f and S 3p orbitals. The Mulliken population analysis indicates that the amount of \% S 3p character in these orbitals is essentially identical for the UO2(S2PPh2)2(EtOH) and UO2[S2P(o-CF3C6H4)2]2(EtOH) complexes, which is lower than that in the U 6d-based orbitals. The essentially identical covalency in U-S bonds for the two UO2(S2PR2)2(EtOH) complexes are contradictory to the significantly different AnIII/LnIII separation performance of the two dithiophosphinic acids, thus the covalency seems to be unable to account for substituent effects in the AnIII/LnIII separation by the dithiophosphinic acids. The results in this work provide valuable insight into the understanding of the mechanism in the AnIII/LnIII separation by the dithiophosphinic acids.

Covalency in Actinide(IV) Hexachlorides in Relation to Chlorine K­-Edge X­-ray Absorption Structure

Chlorine K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) in actinide^IV hexachlorides, [AnCl₆]²⁻ (An = Th–Pu), is calculated with relativistic multiconfiguration wavefunction theory (WFT). Of particular focus is a 3-peak feature emerging from U toward Pu, and its assignment in terms of donation bonding to the An 5f vs. 6d shells. With or without spin–orbit coupling, the calculated and previously measured XANES spectra are in excellent agreement with respect to relative peak positions, relative peak intensities, and peak assignments. Metal–ligand bonding analyses from WFT and Kohn–Sham theory (KST) predict comparable An 5f and 6d covalency from U to Np and Pu. Although some frontier molecular orbitals in the KST calculations display increasing An 5f–Cl 3p mixing from Th to Pu, because of energetic stabilization of 5f relative to the Cl 3p combinations of the matching symmetry, increasing hybridization is neither seen in the WFT natural orbitals, nor is it reflected in the calculated bond orders. The appearance of the pre-edge peaks from U to Pu and their relative intensities are rationalized simply by the energetic separation of transitions to 6d t_2gversus transitions to weakly-bonded and strongly stabilized a_2u, t_2u and t_1u orbitals with 5f character. The study highlights potential pitfalls when interpreting XANES spectra based on ground state Kohn–Sham molecular orbitals.
