Reversible Switching of the Magnetic Orientation of Titanate Nanosheets by Photochemical Reduction and Autoxidation

Bottom-up Synthesis of Nanosheets at Various Interfaces

Nanostructured materials with high aspect ratios have been widely studied for their unique properties. In particular, nanosheets have safety, dispersibility, and nanosized effects, and nanosheets with exceptionally small thicknesses exhibit unique properties. For non-exfoliable materials, the bottom-up nanosheet growth using various interfaces as templates have been investigated. This review article presents the synthesis of nanosheets at the interfaces and layered structure; it explains the features of each interface type, its advantages, and its uniqueness. The interfaces work as templates for nanosheet synthesis. We can easily use the liquid-liquid and gas-liquid interfaces as the templates; however, the thickness of nanosheets usually becomes thick because it allows materials to grow in thickness. The solid-gas and solid-liquid interfaces can prevent nanosheets from growing in thickness. However, the removal of template solids is required after the synthesis. The layered structures of various materials provide two-dimensional reaction fields between the layers. These methods have high versatility, and the nanosheets synthesized by these methods are thin. Finally, this review examines the key challenges and opportunities associated with scalable nanosheet synthesis methods for industrial production.

Assembly of Supramolecular Nanoplatelets with Tailorable Geometrical Shapes and Dimensions

The craving for controllable assembly of geometrical nanostructures from artificial building motifs, which is routinely achieved in naturally occurring systems, has been a perpetual and outstanding challenge in the field of chemistry and materials science. In particular, the assembly of nanostructures with different geometries and controllable dimensions is crucial for their functionalities and is usually achieved with distinct assembling subunits via convoluted assembly strategies. Herein, we report that with the same building subunits of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD)/block copolymer inclusion complex (IC), geometrical nanoplatelets with hexagonal, square, and circular shapes could be produced by simply controlling the solvent conditions via one-step assembly procedure, driven by the crystallization of IC. Interestingly, these nanoplatelets with different shapes shared the same crystalline lattice and could therefore be interconverted to each other by merely tuning the solvent compositions. Moreover, the dimensions of these platelets could be decently controlled by tuning the overall concentrations.

From Nanoscopic to Macroscopic Materials by Stimuli-Responsive Nanoparticle Aggregation

Stimuli-responsive nanoparticle (NP) aggregation plays an increasingly important role in regulating NP assembly into microscopic superstructures, macroscopic 2D, and 3D functional materials. Diverse external stimuli are widely used to adjust the aggregation of responsive NPs, such as light, temperature, pH, electric, and magnetic fields. Many unique structures based on responsive NPs are constructed including disordered aggregates, ordered superlattices, structural droplets, colloidosomes, and bulk solids. In this review, the strategies for NP aggregation by external stimuli, and their recent progress ranging from nanoscale aggregates, microscale superstructures to macroscale bulk materials along the length scales as well as their applications are summarized. The future opportunities and challenges for designing functional materials through NP aggregation at different length scales are also discussed.

Monodomain Liquid Crystals of Two-Dimensional Sheets by Boundary-Free Sheargraphy

Eliminating topological defects to achieve monodomain liquid crystals is highly significant for the fundamental studies of soft matter and building long-range ordered materials. However, liquid crystals are metastable and sensitive to external stimuli, such as flow, confinement, and electromagnetic fields, which cause their intrinsic polycrystallinity and topological defects. Here, we achieve the monodomain liquid crystals of graphene oxide over 30 cm through boundary-free sheargraphy. The obtained monodomain liquid crystals exhibit large-area uniform alignment of sheets, which has the same optical polarized angle and intensity. The monodomain liquid crystals provide bidirectionally ordered skeletons, which can be applied as lightweight thermal management materials with bidirectionally high thermal and electrical conductivity. Furthermore, we extend the controllable topology of two-dimensional colloids by introducing singularities and disclinations in monodomain liquid crystals. Topological structures with defect strength from - 2 to + 2 were realized. This work provides a facile methodology to study the structural order of soft matter at a macroscopic level, facilitating the fabrication of metamaterials with tunable and highly anisotropic architectures.

Magnetic Field Alignment and Optical Anisotropy of MoS2 Nanosheets Dispersed in a Liquid Crystal Polymer

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets exhibit anisotropic optical and electronic properties, stemming from their shape and electronic structure. Unveiling this anisotropy for study and usage in materials and devices requires the ability to control the orientation of dispersed nanosheets, but to date this has proved a challenging proposition. Here, we demonstrate magnetic field driven alignment of MoS₂ nanosheets in a liquid crystal (LC) polymer and unveil the optical properties of the resulting anisotropic assembly. Nanosheet optical anisotropy is observed spectroscopically by Raman and direction-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Resulting data indicate significantly lower PL emission due to optical excitation with electric field oscillation out of plane, parallel to the MoS₂ c-axis, than that associated with perpendicular excitation, with the dichroic ratio I_perp/I_par = 3. The approach developed here provides a useful route to elucidate anisotropic optical properties of MoS₂ nanosheets and to utilize such properties in new materials and devices.

Skillful Control of Dispersion and 3D Network Structures: Advances in Functional Organic–Inorganic Nano-Hybrid Materials Prepared Using the Sol-Gel Method

Organic–inorganic hybrid materials have become indispensable high-performance and highly functional materials. This is owing to the improved dispersion control in hybrid materials and emergence of functional ionic liquids. Harmonization of both these factors has enabled the utilization of functional 3D network structures and nanodispersions in composite materials. Polymeric materials endow materials with flexibility, toughness, and shape-memory properties, whereas inorganic materials provide materials with unique optical, electrical, and magnetic properties due to their nanosize. Organic–inorganic hybrid materials have evolved into novel materials that go beyond the composite rule. In this review, the historical development of hybrid materials prepared using the sol-gel method and the birth of ionic liquids have been summarized. In addition, the historical results leading to the development of functional 3D network structures and dispersion control have also been presented, as well as a review of the research on functional ionic liquids, which are of current interest. The authors also summarize the results of their research on functional ionic liquids. The design of new organic–inorganic hybrid materials has been discussed and the future prospects of new polymer composite materials provided.

Origin of the Anomalous Temperature Dependence of the Photochromic Reaction of Cu-Doped ZnS Nanocrystals

The temperature dependence of the color fading process of thermally reversible photochromic reactions is one of the most important challenges for their industrial applications. Generally, photochromic reactions of organic molecules have a strong temperature dependence due to the occurrence of large conformational changes during the reactions. In contrast, we recently reported that the photochromic reaction of Cu-doped ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) exhibits a very small temperature dependence around room temperature. However, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon has not been clarified yet. Here, we reveal that the anomalous temperature dependence of Cu-doped ZnS NCs originates from the balance between the temperature dependence of the charge recombination and that of the adsorption/desorption of water molecules on the surface of the NCs, which act as hole acceptors. Exploring temperature-insensitive photochromic reactions is important not only for gaining fundamental insight into nanomaterials but also for developing novel photochromic materials for outdoor applications.

Polarization-Modulated Multidirectional Photothermal Actuators

Photothermal actuators have attracted increasing attention due to their ability to convert light energy into mechanical deformation and locomotion. This work reports a freestanding, multidirectional photothermal robot that can walk along a predesigned pathway by modulating laser polarization and on-off switching. Magnetic-plasmonic hybrid Fe₃ O₄ /Ag nanorods are synthesized using an unconventional templating approach. The coupled magnetic and plasmonic anisotropy allows control of the rod orientation, plasmonic excitation, and photothermal conversion by simply applying a magnetic field. Once the rods are fixed with desirable orientations in a bimorph actuator by magnetic-field-assisted lithography, the bending of the actuator can be controlled by switching the laser polarization. A bipedal robot is created by coupling the rod orientation with the alternating actuation of its two legs. Irradiating the robot by a laser with alternating or fixed polarization synergistically results in basic movement (backward and forward) and turning (including left-, right-, and U-turn), respectively. A complex walk along predesigned pathways can be potentially programmed by combining the movement and turning modes of the robots. This strategy provides an alternative driving mechanism for preparing functional soft robots, thus breaking through the limitations in the existing systems in terms of light sources and actuation manners.

Polycarbonate/Titania Hybrid Films with Localized Photo-Induced Magnetic-Phase Transition

Materials that exhibit the photo-induced magnetic-phase transition of titania are receiving significant attention because they can be easily switched between diamagnetism and paramagnetism by UV irradiation. However, it is difficult to store photo-induced titanium (Ti³⁺) in air because of its easy oxidation upon oxygen exposure. In this study, titania/polycarbonate hybrid films were prepared using linear 1,6-hexanediol (PHMCD), cyclic 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (PCHCD), or their copolymerized carbonate oligomers using the sol-gel method. The oxygen permeability of the hybrid film decreased as the ratio of the ring structure increased by a factor of approximately 32 from PHMCD with only the chain structure to PCHCD with only the ring structure. These hybrid films can generate Ti³⁺ under a UV irradiation of 250 W for 2 h, and the difference in oxygen permeability significantly affected the lifetime of the Ti³⁺ by a factor of up to 120. In addition, the tensile tests and IR measurements demonstrated that UV irradiation had little effect on the mechanical intensity and matrix chemical structure. Moreover, the magnetic susceptibility of Ti³⁺ present in PCHCD was confirmed to be 6.2 (10^-3 emu/g(titania)) under an external magnetic field of 5 T induced using a superconducting quantum interference device.

Unexpected Photoinduced Room Temperature Magnetization in Bi2 WO6 Nanosheets

The current investigation in magnetism in 2D materials offers new opportunities for studying spintronics at low dimensions. Here, reversible photoinduced room temperature magnetization in 2D Bi₂ WO₆ nanosheets is reported for the first time. Compared with the original state, the ultraviolet (UV)-illuminated Bi₂ WO₆ nanosheets show a yellow-green color change and significantly enhanced magnetic signals (saturated magnetization (M_s ) increased from 0.002 to 0.12 emu g^-1 ). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show unexpected W reduction (W⁶⁺ to W⁵⁺ /W4+) and Bi oxidation (Bi³⁺ to Bi⁵⁺ ) upon UV illumination for the Bi₂ WO₆ nanosheets, indicating a photoexcited Bi to W charge transfer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate spontaneous spin polarization of the Bi₂ WO₆ nanosheets in the excited metastable state. Meanwhile, thicker Bi₂ WO₆ nanoplates or nanoparticles show no enhanced magnetic signals upon UV illumination. UV illumination of the thin Bi₂ WO₆ nanosheets can induce the formation of internal electric field (polarization), leading to structural deformation/lattice distortion (photostriction). The photoexcited electrons are trapped in the WO₆ layers while the photogenerated holes are trapped in the Bi₂ O₂ layers, leading to spin polarization and enhance the magnetization. The research may bring some new insights in tuning the magnetic properties of 2D nanostructures.

Two-Dimensional Molecular Sheets of Transition Metal Oxides toward Wearable Energy Storage

Flexible and wearable electronics have recently sparked intense interest in both academia and industry because they can greatly revolutionize human lives by impacting every aspect of our daily routine. Therefore, developing compatible energy storage devices has become one of the most important research frontiers in this field. Particularly, the development of flexible electrodes is of great significance when considering their essential role in the performance of these devices. Although there is no doubt that transition metal oxide nanomaterials are suitable for providing electrochemical energy storage, individual oxides generally cannot be developed into freestanding electrodes because of their intrinsically low mechanical strength.Two-dimensional sheets with genuine unilamellar thickness are perfect units for the assembly of freestanding and mechanically flexible devices, as they have the advantages of low thickness and good flexibility. Therefore, the development of metal oxide materials into a two-dimensional sheet morphology analogous to graphene is expected to solve the above-mentioned problems. In this Account, we summarize the recent progress on two-dimensional molecular sheets of transition metal oxides for wearable energy storage applications. We start with our understanding of the principle of producing two-dimensional metal oxides from their bulk-layered counterparts. The unique layered structure of the precursors inspired the exploration of their interlayer chemistry, which helps us to understand the processes of swelling and delamination. Rational methods for tuning the chemical composition, size/thickness, and surface chemistry of the obtained nanosheets and how physicochemical properties of the nanosheets can be modulated are then briefly introduced. Subsequently, the orientational alignment of the anisotropic sheets and the origins of their liquid-crystalline characteristics are discussed, which are of vital importance for their subsequent macroscopic assembly. Finally, macroscopic electrodes with geometric diversity ranging from one-dimensional macroscopic fibers to two-dimensional films/papers and three-dimensional monolithic foams are summarized. The intrinsically low mechanical stiffness of metal oxide sheets can be effectively overcome by wisely designing the assembly mode and sheet interfaces to obtain decent mechanical properties integrated with superior electrochemical performance, thereby providing critical advantages for the fabrication of wearable energy storage devices.We expect that this Account will stimulate further efforts toward fundamental research on interface engineering in metal oxide sheet assembly and facilitate wide applications of their designed assemblies in future new-concept energy conversion devices and beyond. In the foreseeable future, we believe that there will be a big explosion in the application of transition metal oxide sheets in flexible electronics.

Improvement of the transparency, mechanical, and shape memory properties of polymethylmethacrylate/titania hybrid films using tetrabutylphosphonium chloride

The crosslink density adjustment strategy based on tetrabutylphosphonium chloride allows for the design of multifunctional hybrid polymer materials that are optically clear and combine excellent mechanical and shape memory properties.
