Abstract
In recent years, stimulus responsive materials have received widespread attention. Under solvothermal conditions, three polyoxometalates-viologen organic-inorganic hybrid compounds were successfully constructed by combining a viologen ligand 1-(3-Nitro-benzyl)-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium bromide (1,3-nibipy·Br) with octamolybdate, namely [Cu2(1,3-nibipy)4(H2O)2(β-Mo8O26)2]·2H2O (1), [Cu2(1,3-nibipy)4(H2O)4(β-Mo8O26)]·(β-Mo8O26) (2) and (1,3-Hnibipy)2·(β-Mo8O26) (3). These three compounds can exhibit color changing properties under both light and electrical stimulation. Through characterizations of PXRD, FT-IR, UV-vis spectra, XPS, EPR, CV, and other tests, the photochromic and electrochromic properties of these three compounds are caused by the generation of viologen radicals. Compounds 1-3 have a rapid photoresponse efficiency and can be made into mixed matrix films for use as ultraviolet detectors. In addition, coated filter paper synthesized from acetonitrile and compounds can serve as an innovative erasable ink-free printing material medium, which is suitable for various erasable ink-free printing and anti-counterfeiting fields. We further investigated the electrochromic devices prepared from compounds 1-3, which achieved color change at a voltage of around -0.2 V and exhibited good stability after 500 cycles.

Abstract
Information storage and anti-counterfeiting are two very important applications of photochromic materials. Photochromic materials with both information storage and anti-counterfeiting should meet the requirements including fast coloration, good stability and reversibility, low storage cost, and practical application value. Herein, a novel viologen-based coordination polymer, Cd[(pbpy)0.5(HBTC)Cl]·2H2O (1) (pbpy = 1,1'-[1,4-phenylenebis-(methylene)]bis(4,4'-bipyridinium); HBTC2- = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), has been constructed. Compound 1 not only exhibits selective amine sensing properties, but also shows excellent photochromic properties, and the anti-counterfeiting of a two-dimensional code can be also realized through the color-changing behavior. Meanwhile, photochromic glass films of compound 1 were prepared, and compared to traditional optical information storage technology, these photochromic glass films have better water resistance and stability, improving their practical application stability. This work has further enriched the application of photochromic materials in the field of sensing, anti-counterfeiting and information storage.

Abstract
Smart optical materials with tunable fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) exhibit promising application prospects in the field of intelligent switches, information security, etc. Herein, a tetraimidazole derivative was grafted to one-dimensional lanthanum-diphosphonate through H-bonds, generating a coordination polymer (CP), (H4-TIBP)·[La2Li(H2-HEDP)4(H-HEDP)]·3H2O (termed La; TIBP = 3,3,5,5-tetra(imidazole-1-yl)-1,1-biphenyl; H4-HEDP = 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid) with a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. La shows dynamic fluorescence from blue to red and switchable monotonous yellowish-green RTP, which can be manipulated by reversible photochromism. It is worth noting that Eu3+/Tb3+-doped CPs exhibit time-resolved (red to yellow) and monotonous green afterglow, respectively, which can be attributed to multiple emissions with different decay rates. The dynamic and multicolor luminescence endows these CPs with potential for application in the domains of optical communications, multi-step encryption, and anti-counterfeiting. This work not only integrates color-adjustable fluorescence, switchable RTP, and photochromism in one material, but also realizes the manipulation of the resultant optical performances via photochromism, paving the pathway for the design and synthesis of smart optical materials.

Abstract
Classic homogeneous photocatalysis is limited by the temporal transience and the spatial proximity of photoinduced charge separation and transport. The electron transfer chain (ETC) in cellular respiration can mediate unidirectional and long-range electron transfer to isolate the oxidation and reduction centres. Inspired by this, we modified electron-accepting (A) viologen with π-extending thiazolothiazole and electron-donating (D) phenyl carboxylate into a D-A-π-A-D-type ligand and assembled segregated dye stacking in coordination polymer Cd-TzBDP for breaking the spatiotemporal limitation of single-molecule photocatalysis. The offset characteristics of D-A segregated stacking not only allowed the photoinduced-2e- transfer from the D-type carboxylate terminal to the spatially adjacent A-type viologen motif within 1 ps but also permitted the following delocalization of e- and h+ along stacked columns. These advantages endowed Cd-TzBDP with long-lived photochromic visualization of intermittent aerobic photooxidation steps, which enabled the bioinspired ETC-mediated aerobic respiration of mitochondria, achieving the continuous photocatalytic α-C(sp3)-H functionalization of tertiary amines with pharmaceutical interest. Enlightened by ETC-mediated electron leak in hypoxia, the coordination polymer was further employed in a photocatalytic membrane reactor, which visually illustrated the photo-driven cross-membrane long-range transfers of multiple electrons and protons from the hypoxic compartment to normoxic one, benefiting the distal photooxidation and photoreduction with biomimetic compartment selectivity.

Abstract
Different types of electron transfers (ETs) underlie the versatile use of various solid viologen-derived compounds, which is still insufficiently understood and difficult to control. Here, we demonstrate an effective strategy for modulating the key ET process in crystalline metalloviologen compounds (MVCs). By adjusting the coordinated transition metal ions bearing different electronic structures (e.g., d5, d7, d10), three MVCs (i.e., Mn-1, Co-2, and Cd-3) with highly consistent coordination environments have been synthesized successfully. Surprisingly, whether the photochromism (energy-induced ET mechanism) or the specific analyte recognition (molecule-induced ET mechanism), compound Cd-3 exhibits obvious photochromic behavior and differential dimethylamine detection. Combined detailed structural analysis with theoretical calculations, such unique ion-dependent properties, were correlated to the fine modulation of the electron density of the bipyridinium cores by metal ions. Additionally, thanks to the delicate recognition of dimethylamine vapor, a convenient test strip Cd-3-PAN was prepared as a sensitive biogenic amine sensor for evaluating the real-time freshness of seafood.

Abstract
The exploration of a facile approach to create structurally versatile substances carrying air-stable radicals is highly desired, but still a huge challenge in chemistry and materials science. Herein, a non-contact method to generate air-stable radicals by exposing pyridine/imidazole ring-bearing substances to volatile cyanuric chloride vapor, harnessed as a chemical fuel is reported. This remarkable feat is accomplished through a nucleophilic substitution reaction, wherein an intrinsic electron transfer event transpires spontaneously, originating from the chloride anion (Cl-) to the cationic nitrogen (N+) atom, ultimately giving rise to pyridinium/imidazolium radicals. Impressively, the generated radicals exhibit noteworthy stability in the air over one month owing to the delocalization of the unpaired electron through the extended and highly fused π-conjugated pyridinium/imidazolium-triazine unit. Such an approach is universal to diverse substances, including organic molecules, metal-organic complexes, hydrogels, polymers, and organic cage materials. Capitalizing on this versatile technique, surface radical functionalization can be readily achieved across diverse substrates. Moreover, the generated radical species showcase a myriad of high-performance applications, including mimicking natural peroxidase to accelerate oxidation reactions and achieving high-efficiency near-infrared photothermal conversion and photothermal bacterial inhibition.

Abstract
Multi-stimuli-responsive chromic materials have immense potential for utilization. Herein, two supramolecular inclusion complexes were prepared by self-assembly of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with dialkylcarboxyl-substituted viologens, N,N'-di(3-carboxy-propyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride (CPV·Cl2) and N,N'-di(6-carboxy-hexyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide (CHV·Br2). The self-assembled inclusion complexes CPV2+@β-CD and CHV2+@β-CD2 in the solid-state exhibited naked-eye photochromism, thermochromism, and electrochromism in response to multiple external stimuli including light, temperature, and electric field, respectively. Solid-state UV-vis diffuse reflectance and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy revealed that the observed photochromism, thermochromism and electrochromism are attributed to the formation of viologen free radicals induced by electron transfer under external stimuli. The excellent stimuli-response chromic properties of the title inclusion complexes support their practical utility in visual display, multiple anticounterfeiting, and multilevel information encryption.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show potential application in many domains, in which photochromic MOFs (PMOFs) have received enormous attention. Researchers mainly utilize photoactive ligands to build PMOFs. Recently, the mixed electron donating and accepting ligands strategies have also been used to construct PMOFs driven by the electron transfer between nonphotochromic moieties. However, the potential interligand competition inhibits the formation of PMOFs. Therefore, the exploration of single-ligand-guided assembly is conductive for building PMOFs. Considering the existing electron accepting and donating role of pyridyl and carboxyl, the pyridinecarboxyate derived from the fusion of pyridyl and carboxyl units may serve as single ligand to yield PMOFs (Figure 1d). In this work, the coordination assembly of bipyridinedicarboxylate (2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid, H2bpdc; 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid, H2pda) and LaCl3 generate two PMOFs, [La(bpdc)(H2O)Cl] (1) and [La(pda)(H2O)2Cl]⋅2H2O (2). Both complexes feature dinuclear lanthanum as building blocks with differences in the connecting number of likers, in which 1 has (4,8)-connected topology and 2 exhibits sql topology. Their structural differences result in the diversities of photoresponsive functionalities. Compared with reported PMOFs built from photoactive ligands and mixed ligands, this study provides new available categories of single ligand for generating PMOFs and tuning the structure and photoresponsive properties via ligand substitution and external photostimulus.

Abstract
Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Abstract
Organic multi-stimulus-responsive materials are widely used in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption due to their unique response characteristics and designability. However, progress in obtaining multi-stimulus-responsive smart materials has been very slow. Herein, a spiropyran derivative is constructed, which shows photochromic, thermochromic and mechanical photochromic properties, and has reversible absorption/luminescence adjustment ability. By introducing non-covalent interactions such as van der Waals force and hydrogen bond, this new molecule is more sensitive to external stimuli and exhibits better photochromic, mechanochromic and thermochromic properties with rapid speed and high contrast. Furthermore, these three stimulus responses can be completely restored to the initial state under white light irradiation. The reversible multiple response characteristics of this molecule make it possible to provide dynamic anti-counterfeiting and advanced information encryption capabilities. To demonstrate its application in advanced information encryption, powders treated with different stimuli are combined with fluorescent dyes to encrypt complex digital information. This work puts forward a new time-resolved encryption strategy, which provides important guidance for the development of time-resolved information security materials.

Tunable photo/thermochromic properties of Cd(II)-viologen coordination polymers modulated by coordination modes for flexible imaging films and anti-counterfeiting. Dalton Trans 2024; 53:8803-8811. Abstract
Two photochromic Cd(II)-CPs were obtained based on the viologen ligand using different synthetic routes, named {[Cd4(p-BDC)4(CPB)2(H2O)2]·2H2O·EtOH}n (1) and {[Cd(p-BDC)(CPB)(H2O)]·(L)·DMF}n (2) (p-H2BDC = 1,4-benzene-dicarboxylate, HCPB·Cl = 1-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium·Cl, L = 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), respectively. Due to different coordination modes, the two Cd(II)-CPs show different structures. Compound 1 exhibits a three-dimensional (3D) framework with bimetallic nodes, while compound 2 displays a 2-fold interpenetrated (4,4) net topology. Notably, the two Cd(II)-CPs exhibit substantial disparities in photo/thermochromism, which can be attributed to variations in donor-acceptor (D-A) distances arising from structural differences. Compound 1 showed visually sensitive photo- and thermochromic behavior due to multi-pathway electron transfer and short D-A distances, which is relatively rare in electron-transfer type photochromic systems. In contrast, 2 only demonstrates insensitive photochromic behavior, with a slight deepening of the color observed after 2 hours of UV light, which is due to the mono-pathway electron transfer and long D-A distance. Moreover, we first combined Cd(II)-viologen CPs with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare a 1@PDMS flexible UV imaging film. 1@PDMS exhibits excellent bendability and stretchability and maintains good photochromic properties after 100 bending cycles. To demonstrate the rapid color response and distinct color contrast of 1, its application in anti-counterfeiting is also demonstrated.

Abstract
At present, viologen-based compounds can undergo reversible chemical/physical changes under external stimuli such as light and electricity. This makes these compounds have potential applications in smart windows, displays, and sensors. In order to obtain such materials, three viologen-POM inorganic-organic hybrid compounds have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method, namely {[Cu2(cybpy)8(α-P2W18O62)2}·18H2O (1), (Hbpy)·(cybpy)·[H4(α-P2W18O62)]}·32H2O (2) and {(Hcybpy)2(β-Mo8O26)}·2H2O (3) (cybpy·Br = 1-cyclobutylmethyl-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium bromide, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine). Three compounds exhibit good discoloration behaviors under various external stimuli, especially under the stimulation of X-ray, UV, electricity, and organic amines. In addition, in order to promote the compounds in the actual production of more applications, they were doped into the polymer matrix to construct hybrid films, which not only have the same response to external stimulation but also increase the repeatability of the photochromic process. Moreover, 1-3 powder samples in ethanol solution were ultrasonic treated and deposited on filter paper, which can be successfully used in erasable inkless printing.

Abstract
The fabrication of molecular crystalline materials with fast, multistimuli-responsive behavior and the construction of the corresponding structure-activity relationship are of extraordinary significance for the development of smart materials. In this context, three multistimuli-responsive functional metal-organic polyhedra (MOP), {[Dy2(bcbp)3(NO3)1.5(H2O)7]·Cl4.2·(NO3)0.3·H2O}n (1), {[Dy2(bcbp)4(H2O)8]Cl6}n (2), and {[Eu2(bcbp)4(H2O)10]Cl6·H2O}n (3; bcbp = 1,1'-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium), were successfully prepared and characterized. All of the compounds exhibit rapid and reversible photochromic and electrochromic dual-responsive behaviors. Furthermore, benefiting from the well-defined crystal structure and different responsive behaviors, the photoinduced electron transfer (PIET) process and structure-activity relationship were explored. In addition, considering the excellent photochromic performance, function filter paper and smart organic glass were successfully prepared and used for ink-free printing and UV light detection.

Abstract
Self-assembly-based structural transition has been explored for various applications, including molecular machines, sensors, and drug delivery. In this study, we developed new redox-active metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) called DGIST-10 series that comprise π-acidic 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based ligands and Ni2+ ions, aiming to boost ligand-self-assembly-driven structural transition and study the involved mechanism. Notably, during the synthesis of the MOFs, a single-crystal-amorphous-single-crystal structural transition occurred within the MOFs upon radical formation, which was ascribed to the fact that radicals prefer spin-pairing or through-space electron delocalization by π-orbital overlap. The radical-formation-induced structural transitions were further confirmed by the postsynthetic solvothermal treatment of isolated nonradical MOF crystals. Notably, the transient amorphous phase without morphological disintegration was clearly observed, contributing to the seminal structural change of the MOF. We believe that this unprecedented structural transition triggered by the ligand self-assembly magnifies the structural flexibility and diversity of MOFs, which is one of the pivotal aspects of MOFs.

Abstract
Smart chromic materials reacting to physicochemical stimuli are widely applied in optical switches, smart windows, and chemical sensors. Currently, most materials only respond to a single stimulus, but those that respond to multiple external stimuli are still in the minority. Herein, we report a novel porous zinc tungstate@metaloxoviologen framework [Zn3(Bcbpy)6(H2O)2]-[ZnW12O40]·6H2O (ZnW12@MV, H2BcbpyCl2 = 1,1'-bis(3-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride), which shows multiple stimulus-responsive properties due to a combination of different functional motifs, namely, viologen electron acceptors, luminescent zinc-oxygen-clusters, porous cationic frameworks, and ZnW12O406- electron donors. Generally, the large-sized polyoxometalate (POM) anions serving as structure-directing agents can easily direct the formation of the oligomeric metaloxoviologen cations, mainly because POMs may break down some linkages leaving larger spaces for themselves. The large ZnW12O406- anions in ZnW12@MV are encapsulated into three-dimensional (3D) metaloxoviologen frameworks built up from the linkages of trinuclear zinc-oxygen clusters and Bcbpy viologens, which offer the first example of a 3D metaloxoviologen framework induced by large-sized POM anions. ZnW12@MV shows a reversible chromic response to X-ray/UV and electricity via different stimulus-induced electron transfers between electron-rich POM anions and electron-deficient metaloxoviologen frameworks, whereas the coloration changes are ascribed to the formation of radical and mixed-valence colored state ZnW12O406- species. The photochromic behavior is accompanied by photoluminescence quenching. The discriminative response to different-sized amines is attributed to the formation of viologen radicals through host-guest electron transfer. These results indicate that the multi-stimulus response ZnW12@MV can be applied in electrochromic devices, inkless erasable printing, and the detection of amines.

Abstract
Materials exhibiting X-ray-induced photochromism have consistently piqued the interest of researchers. Exploring the photochromic properties of such materials is valuable for understanding the structural changes and electron transfer processes that occur under high energy radiation, such as X-ray irradiation. Here, a crystalline silver(I) nanocluster synthesized from tert-butylacetylene silver was found to have the ability to exhibit color and photoluminescence changes upon exposure to X-ray radiation. The responsive behavior was observed across a wide temperature range of 100-300 K, with the ability to respond particularly well to soft X-rays (λ > 1 Å) and exhibit light responsiveness to hard X-rays (λ < 1 Å). By combining experimental findings including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron spin resonance, etc. with theoretical calculations, we have proposed that X-ray irradiation induces electron transfer from chloride (Cl-) located in the center of the silver(I) nanocluster to the surrounding Ag14 in the skeleton. This represents the first documented example in which electron transfer induced by X-ray excitation has been observed, accompanied by a photochromism process, in silver nanoclusters. This study contributes to our understanding of X-ray-induced photochromism and the electron transfer process in silver cluster compounds. It also provides valuable insights and potential design strategies for applications such as photochromism, photoluminescence color change, and photoenergy conversion.

Abstract
Viologen and Prussian blue (PB) exhibit good electrochromic properties, but certain limitations still exist. To improve the electrochromic properties of viologen, a viologen derivative 1,1'-bis(4-(bromomethyl)benzyl)-[4,4'-bipyridine]-1,1'-diium hexafluorophosphate (BBDV) was synthesized, and its electrochromic properties were investigated. Additionally, a flexible composite electrochromic device (FC-ECD) was prepared by using BBDV and PB as active materials. The structure of the FC-ECD was PET-ITO/gel electrolyte-BBDV/PB/PET-ITO. The applied voltage required for the FC-ECD was found to be lower than that of the ECD based on BBDV(FBBDV-ECD). Compared to FBBDV-ECD, FC-ECD exhibited a higher optical contrast (71.42%) and cyclic stability (89.51%). The FC-ECD exhibited multicolor changes under different applied voltages (ranging from -2.0 to +1.6 V). Especially, the color of the FC-ECD remained stable for 14 h after the removal of the applied voltage.

Abstract
Finding X-ray and UV responsive hybrid single crystals including their versatile properties is highly desirable though the fabrication of such material is a very challenging task to researchers. Herein, a methyl viologen assisted hybrid nickel organophosphonate structure (i.e., NIT1) is demonstrated by adapting an in situ solvothermal strategy to investigate the X-ray effect and photochromic behaviors. The bifunctional coordinated and templated roles of monocationic and bicationic methyl viologen units present in the hybrid structure are noteworthy and can manifest prominent structural enhancement and reversible photochromism behaviors.

Abstract
Three POMs-based viologen compounds with different structures were successfully constructed under solvothermal and hydrothermal conditions, [Cu(1,4-cby)2(H2O)0.5(β-Mo8O26)0.5]·C3H7NO·3H2O (1), [H2(1,4-cby)2]·(β-Mo8O26) (2) (1,4-cby·Cl = 1-(4-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridine chloride), [H2(1,4-cbyy)2]·(SiMo12O40) (3) (1,4-cbyy·Cl = 1-(4-cyanobenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridine chloride). Compound 1 is a structure with the number "eight-like" metal-organic chain with Cu as the nodes, and compounds 2 and 3 are fascinating structures connected by hydrogen bonding interactions. More importantly, compounds 1-3 exhibit a good response to both light and electricity and the thermal response of compound 1 was also studied. The reasons for the response of compounds 1-3 to external stimuli were analyzed through methods such as UV-Vis, EPR, and XPS. In addition, the transient photocurrent response results of compounds 1-3 are the same as those obtained from kinetic calculations. Meanwhile, the coated filter paper based on compound 3 has been successfully applied in erasable inkless printing and anti-counterfeiting, the test paper of 3 can also detect metal ions, and the films based on compounds 1-3 are a flexible and portable ultraviolet (UV) detector.

Abstract
The combination of electron-deficient viologen ligands with electron-rich POMs is a typical acceptor-donor system that has recently received much attention. Under solvothermal and hydrothermal conditions, by introducing three symmetric viologen ligands into POM-based hybrid materials, we successfully constructed four POMs-viologen inorganic-organic hybrid compounds, namely (1,3-bcbpy)2·(δ-Mo8O26) (1) (1,3-bcbpy·2Cl = 1,1'-bis(3-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridine dichloride), {CoII(1,4-bcbpy)2(H2O)2[H2(β-Mo8O26)]}·2H2O·2CH2O (2), (1,4-bcbpy)2·(δ-Mo8O26)·2H2O (3) (1,4-bcbpy·2Cl = 1,1'-bis(4-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridine dichloride, CH2O = formaldehyde), and {CuII(1,1-pmbby)2(H2O)[H2(β-Mo8O26)2]}·5H2O·C2H7N (4) (1,1-pmbby·2Cl = 1,1'-[1,4-phenylbis(methylene)]bis-(4,4'-bipyridine)dichloride, C2H7N = dimethylamine). These four compounds exhibit different fascinating structures, especially compound 4 is a typical metal-organic framework. Compounds 1-4 exhibit good discoloration behaviors under various external stimuli. For example, compounds 1-4 showed a positive response to the irradiation from a 300 W Xe lamp. When a positive voltage was applied to the ECD based on compounds 1-4, 1/2/3/4-ECD underwent a significant color conversion. What's more, compound 4 also showed obvious discoloration results after heating. In a word, 1-4 are multifunctional discoloration materials under different external stimuli. In addition, the coated filter paper prepared based on compound 3 can be used as a new printing material medium and can be successfully applied in erasable inkless printing and dual anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract
Inkless and erasable printing (IEP) based on chromic materials holds great promise to alleviate environmental and sustainable problems. Metal-organic polymers (MOPs) are bright platforms for constructing IEP materials. However, it is still challenging to design target MOPs with excellent specific functions rationally due to the intricate component-structure-property relationships. Herein, an effective strategy was proposed for the rational design IEP-MOP materials. The stimuli-responsive viologen moiety was introduced into the construction of MOPs to give it potential chromic behaviors and two different coordination models (i. e. bilateral coordination model, M1 ; unilateral coordinated model, M2 ) based on the same viologen ligand were designed. Aided by theoretical calculations, model M1 was recommended secondarily as a more suitable system for IEP materials. Along this line, two representative viologen-ZnII MOPs 1 and 2 with models M1 and M2 were synthesized successfully. Experiments exhibit that 1 does have quicker stimuli response, stronger color contrast and longer radical lifetime compared to 2. Significantly, the obtained 1-IEP media brightly inherits the excellent chromic characteristics of 1 and the flexibility of the paper at the same time, which achieves most daily printing requirements, as well as enough resolution and durability to be used in identification by smart device.

Abstract
Synaptic devices that mimic biological synapses are considered as promising candidates for brain-inspired devices, offering the functionalities in neuromorphic computing. However, modulation of emerging optoelectronic synaptic devices has rarely been reported. Herein, a semiconductive ternary hybrid heterostructure is prepared with a D-D'-A configuration by introducing polyoxometalate (POM) as an additional electroactive donor (D') into a metalloviologen-based D-A framework. The obtained material features an unprecedented porous 8-connected bcu-net that accommodates nanoscale [α-SiW12 O40 ]4- counterions, displaying uncommon optoelectronic responses. Besides, the fabricated synaptic device based on this material can achieve dual-modulation of synaptic plasticity due to the synergetic effect of electron reservoir POM and photoinduced electron transfer. And it can successfully simulate learning and memory processes similar to those in biological systems. The result provides a facile and effective strategy to customize multi-modality artificial synapses in the field of crystal engineering, which opens a new direction for developing high-performance neuromorphic devices.

Abstract
Digital inkjet printing has become one of the most convenient and efficient technologies for coating chromic materials on flexible substrates with complicated patterns. However, the development of water-based, additive-free chromic inks for inkjet printing still remains a challenge. Herein, three ammonium-functionalized colorless viologen derivatives AV, APV, and AQV with excellent water solubilities are utilized as chromes in the chromic inks due to their excellent photochromic and electrochromic properties. Water, ethanol, and ethylene glycol are selected as cosolvents, and their contents in this ternary solvent system have been optimized to achieve comprehensive rheological properties. With the H2O:EtOH:EG weight ratio of 8:1:7, the chromic ink based on AV realizes a viscosity of 4.69 mPa·s, a surface tension of 45.13 mN/m, and a Z value of 3.87. Without adding any additive, the as-prepared chromic inks can be printed on flexible substrates, such as paper and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films, by a conventional inkjet printer with inherent high resolutions. The printed patterns are initially invisible due to the colorless characteristics of the chromic inks. Interestingly, the printed films are responsive to both light and electric stimuli. Upon irradiation by UV light, a series of sentences with font sizes from 5 to 12 points and four quick response codes with different lattice resolutions clearly appear on the printed paper. Meanwhile, after printing on an indium tin oxide-coated PET substrate, electrochromic devices (ECDs) can be facilely fabricated by covering a hydrogel electrolyte on the printed films. Upon application of different potentials, the assembled ECDs exhibit "Peking Opera facial makeup" patterns with different colors. Therefore, the developed water-based additive-free chromic inks can be utilized for information display and encryption applications.

Abstract
By the combination of N,N'-bis(carboxymethyl)-pyromellitic diimide (H2CMPMD, 1) and zinc ions, a novel PMD-based coordination polymer (CP), [Zn(CMPMD)(DMF)1.5]·0.5DMF (2) (DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide), has been prepared and characterized. 1 and 2 exhibit completely different photochromic properties, which are mainly reflected in the photoresponsive rate (5 s for 1 vs 1 s for 2) and coloration contrast (from colorless to light green for 1 vs green for 2). This phenomenon should be attributed to the introduction of zinc ions and the consequent formation of the distinct interfacial contacts of electron donors (EDs) and electron acceptors (EAs) (dn-π = 3.404 and 3.448 Å for 1 vs dn-π = 3.343, 3.359, 3.398, and 3.495 Å for 2), suggesting a subtle modulating effect of metal ions on interfacial contacts, photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer (PIET) and photochromic behaviors. Interestingly, the photochromic performance of 2 can be enhanced after the removal of coordinated DMF, which might be ascribed to the decrease of the distance of EDs/EAs caused by lattice shrinkage, which further improves the efficiency of PIET. Meanwhile, 2 displays rapid electrochromic behavior with an obvious reversible color change from colorless to green, which can be used in an electrochromic device. This work develops a new type of EA for the construction of stimuli-responsive functional materials with excellent dual photo-/electrochromic properties.

Abstract
A one-dimensional Cd(II) chain coordination polymer constructed by an electron-deficient viologen-anchored carboxylate ligand was successfully synthesized. Owing to the favorable stimuli-chromic properties of viologen, the title compound shows reversible photochromism, thermochromism, electrochromism, and naked-eye-detectable differentiable vapochromic response to different volatile amines. The chromic behaviors of it are ascribed to the formation of viologen radicals triggered by external stimuli. And the differentiated response to volatile amines is attributed to the size effect of the amines as well as the steric hindrance effect of forming α/β Cv-H···Namines interactions of the viologen unit to further affect the occurrence of electron transfer. Such an all-in-one crystalline material might have more practical applications in photoelectric, erasable inkless printing, light printing, and volatile amine detection fields.

Abstract
Three novel naphthalenediimide-based (NDI-based) coordination polymers (CPs), namely [Cd(3-PMNDI)(2,2'-BPDC)] (1), [Cd2(3-PMNDI)1.5(4,4'-BPDC)2(H2O)3]·DMF (2) and [Cd(3-PMNDI)(4,4'-SDC)] (3) (2,2'-H2BPDC = 2,2'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, 4,4'-H2BPDC = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, 4,4'-H2SDC = 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylic acid, 3-PMNDI = N,N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide, and DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide), have been designed and synthesized here from electron-deficient PMNDI (electron acceptors, EAs) and electron-rich aromatic carboxylic acids (electron donors, EDs) in the presence of cadmium ions. The introduction of aromatic carboxylic acids with different sizes and conjugation degrees leads to the generation of a two-dimensional (2D) layer in 1, a two-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional (3D) network in 2 and an eight-fold interpenetrated 3D framework in 3. Furthermore, the use of distinct electron-donating aromatic carboxylic acids and the consequent different numbers and strengths of lone pair-π and π-π interactions in the interfacial contacts of EDs/EAs give rise to distinct intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) and initial colors of the three CPs, and consequently cause different photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer (PIET) and distinguishing photo-responsive behaviors (weak photochromic performance for 1, excellent photochromic properties for 2 and non-photochromism for 3). This study indicates that an appropriate ICT is beneficial for PIET, but too weak or too strong ICT is not conducive to PIET, which provides an effective strategy for the construction of functional CPs with distinguishing photo-responsive properties through the subtle balance of ICT and PIET.

Abstract
An organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide (OIMH), namely the electron-deficient naphthalene diimide (NDI) and [CoCl4]2- hybrid (1), showed potential as a sensor for ammonia and amines, in addition to magnetic changes upon vapochromism. Crystal 1 exhibited thermosalient behavior such as leaping and movement, at around 130 °C, which could be explained to be associated with the removal of water molecules from the crystal lattice as shown by TGA and DSC. Compound 1 changed from green to black within 5 minutes when exposed to ammonia vapor, which was attributed to the radical formation in the NDI moiety as evidenced by ESR, and this phenomenon was preserved even when other mono- and di-alkylamines were applied. The exposure of 1 to ammonia resulted in a subsequent color alteration, progressing from black to a gradually dark orange after one day (1_NH3_1 day). This transformation was concomitant with the formation of [Co(NH3)6]3+ from [CoCl4]2-, leading to a modification of the magnetic properties from paramagnetic Co(II) (S = 3/2) to diamagnetic Co(III) (S = 0). Based on these findings, compound 1 represents the first example of an OIMH that exhibits thermosalient behaviour, color change, and magnetic conversion upon exposure to ammonia.

Abstract
Luminescent Zn(II) complexes that respond to external stimuli are of wide interest due to their potential applications. Schiff base with O,N,O-hydrazone shows excellent luminescence properties with multi-coordination sites for different coordination modes. In this work, three salicylaldehyde hydrazone Zn(II) complexes (1, 2a, 2b) were synthesized and their stimuli-responsive behaviors in different states were explored. Only complex 1 exhibits reversible and self-recoverable photochromic and photoluminescence properties in solution. This may be due to the configuration eversion and the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. In the solid state, 2a has obvious mechanochromic luminescence property, which is caused by the destruction of intermolecular interactions and the transformation from crystalline state to amorphous state. 2a and 2b have delayed fluorescence properties due to effective halogen bond interactions in structures. 2a could undergo crystal-phase transformation into its polymorphous 2b by force/vapor stimulation. Interestingly, 2b shows photochromic property, which can be attributed to the electron transfer and generation of radicals induced by UV irradiation. Due to different conformations and coordination modes, the three Zn(II) complexes show different stimuli-responsive properties. This work presents the multi-stimuli-responsive behaviors of salicylaldehyde hydrazone Zn(II) complexes in different states and discusses the response mechanism in detail, which may provide new insights into the design of multi-stimuli-responsive materials.

Abstract
Multiple charge separation has been successfully realized by a proton-coupled electron transfer reaction in an organic cocrystal. Benefiting from the adjustable electronic energy level of the electron donor and acceptor through thermal-induced proton migration, distinct optical absorption behaviors combined with color changes to blue or green are observed in these charge-separated states. It is of interest to note that such charge-separated states exhibit a longer lifetime of over a month as a result of the excellent coplanarity and π-π interaction of the electron acceptors. Moreover, the enhanced absorption toward longer wavelengths endows the charge-separated state with near-infrared (808 nm) photothermal conversion for imaging and bacterial inhibition, whereby the conversion performance can be controlled by the degree of proton migration.

Abstract
Developing ultraviolet (UV) radiation sensors featuring high sensitivity, ease of operation, and rapid readout is highly desired in diverse fields. However, the strategies to enhance sensitivity of UV detection remain limited particularly for photochromic materials, which show colorimetric response toward UV irradiation. Guided by our initial goal of facilitating easier handling, we formulated a viologen derivative ([H2L]-SC) incorporating hydrogel-based UV sensor which not only inherits the photochromism of [H2L]-SC but also engenders an unprecedented reversible photoelectrochromic response that is absent in either [H2L]-SC or hydrogel alone. Judicious synergy between photochromic [H2L]-SC and polyacrylamide (PAM) converts the colorimetric response of [H2L]-SC into the electrical resistance change of [H2L]-SC@PAM, which amplifies the UV sensitivity of [H2L]-SC by 2 orders of magnitude. Explicitly, the limit of detection (LOD) for UV decreases from 296.3 mJ/cm2 based on the UV-vis absorption spectra of [H2L]-SC to 2.83 mJ/cm2 derived from the resistance variation of [H2L]-SC@PAM. Moreover, linear correlation between the resistance reduction rate of [H2L]-SC@PAM and UV dose rate can be established, rendering it as a dual platform for quantifying both the accumulated UV dose and the instant dose rate. In addition, the proposed strategy based on constructing photoelectrochromic hybrids offers a new pathway to boost the UV sensitivity that could be universal for other photochromic materials.

Abstract
There are relatively few reports on the combination of viologen and polyoxometalates (POMs). Herein, we successfully synthesized three viologen-POM-based compounds by in situ transformation of ligands under hydrothermal conditions, namely, {MII(1,4-cby)2[H2(γ-Mo8O26)]}·nH2O (1: M = Ni, n = 4; 2: M = Co, n = 6), and [NiII(1,3-cby)(H2O)4(β-Mo8O26)0.5]·2H2O (3) (1,4-cby·Cl = 1-(4-carboxy-benzyl)-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium, 1,3-cby·Cl = 1-(3-carboxy-benzyl)-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium). Isostructural compounds 1 and 2 exhibit two-dimensional (2D) layer structures with POMs as linking nodes, while compound 3 shows a one-dimensional (1D) metal-organic chain with dissociative POM anions. When the temperature increases, compounds 1-3 show good reversible thermochromism properties and also have a fluorescence quenching effect. Moreover, compounds 1-3 can also be used as detectors for organic amines, especially in the atmosphere of ammonia, ethylenediamine, and diethylamine with an obvious discoloration effect. In addition, compound 1 was used as a material for the preparation of memristors with superior properties (distinct temperature-adjusted resistive switching properties). It shows bipolar resistive switching (RS) behavior at different temperatures of 20, 50, and 100 °C. The results show that the 1-based memristor has good thermal stability, which is important for high-temperature environment applications. It also shows that crystalline viologen-POM-based compounds are ideal candidates for making memristors.

Abstract
Herein, hexaazamacrocyclic ligand LN6 was employed to construct a series of photochromic rare-earth complexes, [Ln(LN6)(NO3)2](BPh4) [1-Ln, Ln = Dy, Tb, Eu, Gd, Y; LN6 = (3E,5E,10E,12E)-3,6,10,13-tetraaza-1,8(2,6)-dipyridinacyclotetradecaphane-3,5,10,12-tetraene]. The behavior of photogenerated radicals of hexaazamacrocyclic ligands was revealed for the first time. Upon 365 nm light irradiation, complexes 1-Ln exhibit photochromic behavior induced by photogenerated radicals according to EPR and UV-vis analyses. Static and dynamic magnetic studies of 1-Dy and irradiated product 1-Dy* indicate weak ferromagnetic interactions among DyIII ions and photogenerated LN6 radicals, as well as slow magnetization relaxation behavior under a 2 kOe applied field. Further fitting analyses show that the magnetization relaxation in 1-Dy* is markedly different from 1-Dy. Time-dependent fluorescence measurements reveal the characteristic luminescence quenching dynamics of lanthanide in the photochromic process. Especially for irradiated product 1-Eu*, the luminescence is almost completely quenched within 5 min with a quenching efficiency of 98.4%. The results reported here provide a prospect for the design of radical-induced photochromic lanthanide single-molecule magnets and will promote the further development of multiresponsive photomagnetic materials.

Abstract
An in-depth understanding of structure-property relationships and the construction of multifunctional stimuli-responsive materials are still difficult challenges. Herein, we discovered a 4,4'-bipyridinium derivative with both photochromism and dynamic afterglow at 77 K for the first time. A one-dimensional (1D) Cd(II) coordination polymer (1) assembled by only a 4,4'-bipyridinium derivative and cadmium chloride showed photochromism, room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), and electrochromism. Interestingly, we found that 1 underwent single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation during the anion exchange process, and the color of the crystal changed from colorless to yellow (1-SCN-) within 10 min. Complex 1 exhibited photochromism, whereas 1-SCN- did not. The difference in the photochromic behavior between the two complexes was ascribed to the electron transfer pathway between the carboxylate groups and viologen. The DFT calculation based on the crystal structure of 1-SCN- indicated that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) were mainly located on bipyridine and cadmium atoms, eliminating the possibility of electron transfer, whereas for complex 1, electron transfer was probable from O and Cl atoms to pyridinium N atoms in viologen as demonstrated by density of states (DOS) calculations. In addition, complex 1 was successfully made into test paper for the rapid detection of I- and SCN- and displayed potential applications in inkless printing, multiple encryption, and anticounterfeiting.

Abstract
Two novel naphthalene diimide (NDI) coordination polymers (CPs), [Cd(NicNDI)(4,4'-SBC)] (1) and [Cd(NicNDI)(2,2'-BPC)] (2) (NicNDI = (3-pyridylacylamino)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene diimide, 4,4'-SBC = 4,4'-stilbene dicarboxylic acid, 2,2'-BPC = 2,2'-biphenyl dicarboxylic acid), were designed and prepared by the combination of electron-deficient NicNDI and electron-rich aromatic carboxylic acid ligands in the presence of cadmium ions. The usage of aromatic carboxylic acid ligands with different conjugation degrees, sizes, shapes and charge densities leads to the generation of distinct interpenetrated three-dimensional (3D) frameworks. Interestingly, photochromism of 1 and weak photoactivity of 2 should be attributed to the introduction of different auxiliary ligands and consequently the formation of distinct interfacial contacts of electron donors (EDs)/electron acceptors (EAs) (dπ-π = 3.427 Å, infinite -ED-EA-ED-EA- for 1vs. dπ-π = 3.634 Å, discrete ED-EA-ED for 2), suggesting a subtle modulating effect of auxiliary ligands on interfacial contacts, photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer (PIET) and photoresponsive behaviors.

Abstract
In this work, a series of novel multistimulus-responsive lanthanide coordination polymers {[LnL(H2O)4]Cl3·3H2O}n (Ln = Dy, Tb, Eu) constructed using a dicarboxylic acid viologen derivative L (L = N,N'-4,4'-bipyridiniodipropionate) and LnCl3·6H2O were prepared. All materials showed positive responses to UV light, and the photochromic phenomena accompanied by significant photoquenching of photoluminescence could be observed through a photoelectron transfer mechanism. Strikingly, the Dy analogue displayed photomagnetic behavior, as well as responded positively to small molecules of inorganic ammonia/organic amines. Furthermore, the good photoresponsive and ammonia/amine vapor-responsive properties of the Dy-based material were further fulfilled in dual-function papers involving erasable inkless printing and visual amine detection applications. This work aims to advance the development of multistimulus-responsive multifunctional materials incorporating viologen derivates and versatile lanthanide ions and further enriches the research in this field.

Abstract
Radical-ionic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have unique optical, magnetic, and electronic properties. These radical ions, forcibly formed by external stimulus-induced redox processes, are structurally unstable and have short radical lifetimes. Here, we report two naphthalenediimide-based (NDI-based) Ca-MOFs: DGIST-6 and DGIST-7. Neutral DGIST-6, which is generated first during solvothermal synthesis, decomposes and is converted into radical-anionic DGIST-7. Cofacial (NDI)2•- and (NDI)22- dimers are effectively stabilized in DGIST-7 by electron delocalization and spin-pairing as well as dimethylammonium counter cations in their pores. Single-crystal x-ray diffractometry was used to visualize redox-associated structural transformations, such as changes in centroid-to-centroid distance. Moreover, the unusual rapid reduction of oxidized DGIST-7 into the radical anion upon infrared irradiation results in effective and reproducible photothermal conversion. This study successfully illustrated the strategic use of in situ prepared cofacial ligand dimers in MOFs that facilitate the stabilization of radical ions.

Abstract
The raising apprehension of volatile organic compound (VOC) exposures urges the exploration of advanced monitoring platforms. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide many attractive features including tailorable porosity, high surface areas, good chemical/thermal stability, and various host-guest interactions, making them appealing candidates for VOC capture and sensing. To comprehensively exploit the potential of MOFs as sensing materials, great efforts have been dedicated to the shaping and patterning of MOFs for next-level device integration. Among different types of sensors (chemiresistive sensors, gravimetric sensors, optical sensors, etc.), MOFs coupled with optical sensors feature distinctive strength. This review summarized the latest advancements in MOF-based optical sensors with a particular focus on VOC sensing. The subject is discussed by different mechanisms: colorimetry, luminescence, and sensors based on optical index modulations. Critical analysis for each system highlighting practical aspects was also deliberated.

Abstract
Cationic water-based polyurethane(CWPU) was synthesized to explore aloe-emodin modifies to obtain CWPU materials with better comprehensive performance. It provides a simple way to synthesize antibacterial waterborne polyurethane, which is to introduce the end-blocking group of herbal extracts into the structure. It contains synergistic antibacterial effect of herbal antibacterial and quaternary ammonium ion on Escherichia coli. It makes the material resist the erosion of bacterial, and increase the service life of materials. When the pH value of the environment changes, the UV absorbance of the aloe-emodin modified cationic water-based polyurethane(AE-CWPU) also changes. Therefore, within a certain detection range, AE-CWPU has great applications in the field of smart response materials. The modified thermodynamic properties have been improved, and the mechanical properties basically maintained the maximum stress, and the elongation at break was reduced.

Abstract
Electron transfer photochromic materials with photo-triggered radicals have received huge interest from chemists due to their potentialities in anticounterfeiting, displays, energy conversion, and information storage. However, utilizing the sole carboxylic acid to synthesize novel electron transfer photochromic species is still confronted with huge challenges. Herein, an acentric three-dimensional network Cd2(ADC)2(DMF)2(H2O) (1; ADC = anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylate; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) and a two-dimensional layer Zn(ADC)(H2O)·DMA·H2O (2; DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide) were synthesized and characterized via a photoactive H2ADC ligand. Both compounds exhibited electron transfer photochromism with the formation of radical photoproducts at the solid state, which was revealed by IR, UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence and electron spin resonance spectra, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Density functional theory calculations for 1 showed that the coloration process is a metal-assisted ligand-to-ligand electron transfer process between adjacent ADC molecules, and photogenerated stable radicals are delocalized over the ADC components. Compared with 1, the shorter distances between ADC components via coordination bonds promoted 2 to exhibit a higher coloration efficiency and larger quantity of photogenerated radicals. Furthermore, both compounds showed unexpected radical-actuated photochromism in aqueous solution. This work showed that the carboxylic acid ligands, without viologen acceptors, could construct the electron transfer photochromic complexes, showing a novel kind of ligand for the design of hybrid photochromic materials.

Abstract
Hybrid photochromic materials (HPMs) with specific photoresponsive functionality have applications in many fields. The photoinduced electron-transfer (ET) strategy has been proved to be effective in the synthesis of HPMs with diverse photomodulated properties. The exploitation of new electron acceptors (EAs) is meaningful for promoting the development of HPMs. In this work, we introduced a rigid tetraimidazole derivative, 3,3,5,5-tetra(imidazol-1-yl)-1,1-biphenyl (TIBP) as a potential EA, into a metal-diphosphonate (1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, H4-HEDP) system to explore HPMs and finally obtained a hybrid metal phosphonate (H4-TIBP)0.5·[Dy(H-HEDP) (H2-HEDP)]·H2O (1). 1 features anionic chains composed of diphosphonate and Dy3+ ions. The extra charge is balanced by protonated TIBP cations, which exist in the void of adjacent chains and form H-bonds with Ophosphonate (N-H···O). Upon photostimulation with a Xe lamp (300 W), the crystalline sample 1 exhibited coloration by changing from colorless to pale yellow because of the presence of photoinduced radicals that originated from the ET from Ophosphonate to NTIBP. Along with the coloration, photomodulated fluorescence, magnetism, and proton conductivity were also detected in the photoactivated samples. Different from the reported HPMs based on polypyridine derivatives and photoactive species such as pyridinium and naphthalimide derivatives as EAs, our study provides a new category of EA units to yield HPMs with fascinating photoresponsive functionality via the assembly of polyimidazole derivatives and phosphonate-based supramolecular building blocks.

Abstract
Donor-acceptor (D-A) hybrid frameworks with visual X-ray photochromism at room temperature are fascinating because of their promising applications as X-ray detectors. Herein, a 3-fold interpenetrated D-A hybrid framework, [Eu(bcbp)1.5(DMF)(H2O)2][Co(CN)6]·4H2O·CH3OH (1), has been obtained by incorporating electron-rich Co(CN)63- into the electron-deficient europium viologen framework, which interestingly exhibits ultraviolet and low-power X-ray dual photochromism with a remarkable color change from brown to green. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the X-ray photochromic behavior of hybrid 1 could be attributed to its D-A hybrid structural feature increasing the extent of photoinduced electron transfer and thus photogenerated radical species upon X-ray irradiation. Meanwhile, due to the introduction of emissive lanthanide cations in the D-A system, hybrid 1 exhibits photomodulated luminescence properties.

Abstract
Achieving magnetic bistability with large thermal hysteresis is still a formidable challenge in material science. Here we synthesize a series of isostructural chain complexes using 9,10-anthracene dicarboxylic acid as a photoactive component. The electron transfer photochromic Mn2+ and Zn2+ compounds with photogenerated diradicals are confirmed by structures, optical spectra, magnetic analyses, and density functional theory calculations. For the Mn2+ analog, light irradiation changes the spin topology from a single Mn2+ ion to a radical-Mn2+ single chain, further inducing magnetic bistability with a remarkably wide thermal hysteresis of 177 K. Structural analysis of light irradiated crystals at 300 and 50 K reveals that the rotation of the anthracene rings changes the Mn1–O2–C8 angle and coordination geometries of the Mn2+ center, resulting in magnetic bistability with this wide thermal hysteresis. This work provides a strategy for constructing molecular magnets with large thermal hysteresis via electron transfer photochromism. Achieving magnetic bistability with large thermal hysteresis is still a challenge in material science. Here, the authors report a Mn(II) chain complex that enables light-induced magnetic bistability with a 177 K thermal hysteresis loop.

Abstract
Recently, stimuli-responsive materials have attracted great attention, while most of them respond to single or two stimuli. Thus, it is essential to design multifunctional stimuli-responsive materials and develop their applications. The strategy that constructing high-dimensional coordination polymers facilitates the application scope of a viologen-based photochromic system is put forward and confirmed for the first time. Herein, a novel multistimuli-responsive viologen-based Zn-MOF with a two-dimensional framework has been successfully designed and synthesized. Complex 1 exhibits chromic behavior under a variety of external stimuli such as 365 nm UV, X-rays, heat, electricity, and ethylamine. More interestingly, the crystal state of complex 1 displays dual fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission and emits a yellow afterglow when turning off the UV lamp. In addition, Eu(III)-functionalized hybrids, Eu3+@Zn-MOF, were prepared by coordinated postsynthetic modification based on viologen complexes for the first time. The sample of Eu3+@Zn-MOF inherits the photochromic characteristics of the viologen complexes and gives the distinctive fluorescence of the europium ions. Based on the multicolor switching of 1 and Eu3+@Zn-MOF, their possible practical utilization was successfully developed in the fields of inkless, erasable print media, electrochromic information tag printing, information encryption, and anticounterfeiting.
