Boosted Oxygen Evolution Reactivity by Igniting Double Exchange Interaction in Spinel Oxides

Spin Crossover and Exchange Effects on Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalyzed by Bimetallic Metal Organic Frameworks

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (BMOFs) have shown a superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, attributed to the synergistic effects of dual metal sites. However, the significant role of these dual-metal synergies in the OER is not yet fully understood. In this study, we employed density functional theory to systematically investigate the OER performance of NiAl- and NiFe-based BMOFs by examining all possible spin states of each intermediate across diverse external potentials and pH environments. We found that the spin state featuring a shallow hole trap state and Ni ions with a higher oxidation state serve as strong oxidizing agents, promoting the OER. An external potential-induced spin crossover was observed in each intermediate, resulting in significant changes in the overall reaction and activation energies due to altered energy levels. Combining the constant potential method and the electrochemical nudged elastic band method, we mapped the minimum free energy barriers of the OER under varied external potential and pH by considering the spin crossover effect for both NiAl and NiFe BMOFs. The results showed that NiFe exhibits better OER thermodynamics and kinetics, which is in good agreement with experimentally measured OER polarization curves and Tafel plots. Moreover, we found that the improved OER kinetics of NiFe not only is attributed to lower barriers but also is a result of improved electrical conductivity arising from the synergistic effects of Ni-Fe dual-metal sites. Specifically, replacing the second metal Al with Fe leads to two significant outcomes: a reduction in both the band gap and the effective hole mass compared to NiAl, and the initiation of super- and double-exchange interactions within the Ni-F-Fe chain, thereby enhancing electron transfer and hopping and leading to the improved OER kinetics.

Mn-Based Mullites for Environmental and Energy Applications

Mn-based mullite oxides AMn2O5 (A = lanthanide, Y, Bi) is a novel type of ternary catalyst in terms of their electronic and geometric structures. The coexistence of pyramid Mn3+-O and octahedral Mn4+-O makes the d-orbital selectively active toward various catalytic reactions. The alternative edge- and corner-sharing stacking configuration constructs the confined active sites and abundant active oxygen species. As a result, they tend to show superior catalytic behaviors and thus gain great attention in environmental treatment and energy conversion and storage. In environmental applications, Mn-based mullites have been demonstrated to be highly active toward low-temperature oxidization of CO, NO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc. Recent research further shows that mullites decompose O3 and ozonize VOCs from -20 °C to room temperature. Moreover, mullites enhance oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and sulfur reduction reactions (SRR), critical kinetic steps in air-battery and Li-S batteries, respectively. Their distinctive structures also facilitate applications in gas-sensitive sensing, ionic conduction, high mobility dielectrics, oxygen storage, piezoelectricity, dehydration, H2O2 decomposition, and beyond. A comprehensive review from basic physicochemical properties to application certainly not only gains a full picture of mullite oxides but also provides new insights into designing heterogeneous catalysts.

Defect Engineering for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reaction on Transition Metal Oxides: The Role of Metal Defects

Metal defect engineering is a highly effective strategy for addressing the prevalent high overpotential issues associated with transition metal oxides functioning as dual-function commercial oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction catalysts for increasing their activity and stability. However, the high formation energy of metal defects poses a challenge to the development of strategies to precisely control the selectivity during metal defect formation. Here, density functional theory calculations are used to demonstrate that altering the pathway of metal defect formation releases metal atoms as metal chlorides, which effectively reduces the formation energy of defects. The metal defects on the monometallic metal oxide surface (Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) are selectively produced using chlorine plasma. The characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that catalytic activity is enhanced owing to electronic delocalization induced by metal defects, which reduces the theoretical overpotential. Notably, ab initio molecular dynamics calculations, ex situ XPS, and in situ ATR-SEIRAS suggest that metal defects effectively improve the adsorption of reactive species on active sites and enhance the efficiency of product desorption, thereby boosting catalytic performance.

Highly Reversible Zn-Air Batteries Enabled by Tuned Valence Electron and Steric Hindrance on Atomic Fe-N4-C Sites

The bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst is the Achilles' heel of achieving robust reversible Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis in alkaline media is realized on atomic Fe-N4-C sites reinforced by NixCo3-xO4 (NixCo3-xO4@Fe1/NC). Compared with that of pristine Fe1/NC, the stability of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is increased 10 times and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance is also improved. The steric hindrance alters the valence electron at the Fe-N4-C sites, resulting in a shorter Fe-N bond and enhanced stability of the Fe-N4-C sites. The corresponding solid-state ZABs exhibit an ultralong lifespan (>460 h at 5 mA cm-2) and high rate performance (from 2 to 50 mA cm-2). Furthermore, the structural evolution of NixCo3-xO4@Fe1/NC before and after the OER and ORR as well as charge-discharge cycling is explored. This work develops an efficient strategy for improving bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis and possibly other processes.

Fe, N-Inducing Interfacial Electron Redistribution in NiCo Spinel on Biomass-Derived Carbon for Bi-functional Oxygen Conversion

Herein, an interfacial electron redistribution is proposed to boost the activity of carbon-supported spinel NiCo2O4 catalyst toward oxygen conversion via Fe, N-doping strategy. Fe-doping into octahedron induces a redistribution of electrons between Co and Ni atoms on NiCo1.8Fe0.2O4@N-carbon. The increased electron density of Co promotes the coordination of water to Co sites and further dissociation. The generation of proton from water improves the overall activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The increased electron density of Ni facilitates the generation of oxygen vacancies. The Ni-VO-Fe structure accelerates the deprotonation of *OOH to improve the activity toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). N-doping modulates the electron density of carbon to form active sites for the adsorption and protonation of oxygen species. Fir wood-derived carbon endows catalyst with an integral structure to enable outstanding electrocatalytic performance. The NiCo1.8Fe0.2O4@N-carbon express high half-wave potential up to 0.86 V in ORR and low overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in OER. The zinc-air batteries (ZABs) assembled with the as-prepared catalyst achieve long-term cycle stability (over 2000 cycles) with peak power density (180 mWcm-2). Fe, N-doping strategy drives the catalysis of biomass-derived carbon-based catalysts to the highest level for the oxygen conversion in ZABs.

High-Surface Area Mesoporous Sc2O3 with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies as New and Advanced Electrocatalyst for Electrochemical Biomass Valorization

Scandium oxide (Sc2O3) is considered as omnipotent "Industrial Ajinomoto" and holds promise in catalytic applications. However, rarely little attention is paid to its electrochemistry. Here, the first nanocasting design of high-surface area Sc2O3 with abundant oxygen vacancies (mesoporous VO-Sc2O3) for efficient electrochemical biomass valorization is reported. In the case of the electro-oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), quantitative HMF conversion, high yield, and high faradic efficiency of FDCA via the hydroxymethylfurancarboxylic acid pathway are achieved by this advanced electrocatalyst. The beneficial effect of the VO on the electrocatalytic performance of the mesoporous VO-Sc2O3 is revealed by the enhanced adsorption of reactants and the reduced energy barrier in the electrochemical process. The concerted design, in situ and ex situ experimental studies and theoretical calculations shown in this work should shed light on the rational elaboration of advanced electrocatalysts, and contribute to the establishment of a circular carbon economy since the bio-plastic monomer and green hydrogen are efficiently synthesized.

Electrochemical surface reconstruction of Prussian blue-modified nickel sulfide to form iron-nickel bilayer hydroxyl oxides for efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction processes

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important semi-reaction in the electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen energy production, and the development of efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts to solve the problem of slow 4-electron transport kinetics in the OER process is key. In this work, a pre-electrocatalyst with the heterogeneous interfacial structure, Prussian blue-modified nickel sulfide with sulfur vacancies (PB/NS-Sv), was designed and then converted to iron-nickel bilayer hydroxyl oxides in oxygen-rich vacancies (FeOOH/NiOOH-Ov@NS) through electrochemical oxidative reconstruction to obtain a truly stable and efficient active material. The study utilized in situ Raman to observe the transition from PB/NS-Sv to FeOOH/NiOOH-Ov@NS during the reaction. The electronic density of states in FeOOH/NiOOH-Ov@NS is regulated by the bilayer hydroxyl metal oxide synergistic effect and the abundant oxygen defect of Mental-OOH-Ov, which significantly improves OER catalytic performance. FeOOH/NiOOH-Ov@NS requires a low overpotential of only 257 mV in 1 mol/L KOH at 100 mA cm-2 current density, has a small Tafel slope of 35.2 mV dec-1 and has excellent stability for 150 h at 100 mA cm-2 current density, making it a promising candidate for industrial applications.

Co-Co Dinuclear Active Sites Dispersed on Zirconium-doped Heterostructured Co9 S8 /Co3 O4 for High-current-density and Durable Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Developing cost-effective and sustainable acidic water oxidation catalysts requires significant advances in material design and in-depth mechanism understanding for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. Herein, we developed a single atom regulatory strategy to construct Co-Co dinuclear active sites (DASs) catalysts that atomically dispersed zirconium doped Co9 S8 /Co3 O4 heterostructure. The X-ray absorption fine structure elucidated the incorporation of Zr greatly facilitated the generation of Co-Co DASs layer with stretching of cobalt oxygen bond and S-Co-O heterogeneous grain boundaries interfaces, engineering attractive activity of significantly reduced overpotential of 75 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , a breakthrough of 500 mA cm-2 high current density, and water splitting stability of 500 hours in acid, making it one of the best-performing acid-stable OER non-noble metal materials. The optimized catalyst with interatomic Co-Co distance (ca. 2.80 Å) followed oxo-oxo coupling mechanism that involved obvious oxygen bridges on dinuclear Co sites (1,090 cm-1 ), confirmed by in situ SR-FTIR, XAFS and theoretical simulations. Furthermore, a major breakthrough of 120,000 mA g-1 high mass current density using the first reported noble metal-free cobalt anode catalyst of Co-Co DASs/ZCC in PEM-WE at 2.14 V was recorded.

Regulating Electronic Structure of Iron Nitride by Tungsten Nitride Nanosheets for Accelerated Overall Water Splitting

Two essential characteristics that are required for hybrid electrocatalysts to exhibit higher oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction (OER and HER, respectively) activity are a favorable electronic configuration and a sufficient density of active sites at the interface between the two materials within the hybrid. In the present study, a hybrid electrocatalyst is introduced with a novel architecture consisting of coral-like iron nitride (Fe2 N) arrays and tungsten nitride (W2 N3 ) nanosheets that satisfies these requirements. The resulting W2 N3 /Fe2 N catalyst achieves high OER activity (268.5 mV at 50 mA cm-2 ) and HER activity (85.2 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ) with excellent long-term durability in an alkaline medium. In addition, density functional theory calculations reveal that the individual band centers experience an upshift in the hybrid W2 N3 /Fe2 N structure, thus improving the OER and HER activity. The strategy adopted here thus provides a valuable guide for the fabrication of cost-effective multi-metallic crystalline hybrids for use as multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Efficient O-O Coupling at Catalytic Interface to Assist Kinetics Optimization on Concerted and Sequential Proton-Electron Transfer for Water Oxidation

A catalyst kinetics optimization strategy based on tuning active site intermediates adsorption is proposed. Construction of the M-OOH on the catalytic site before the rate-determining step (RDS) is considered a central issue in the strategy, which can optimize the overall catalytic kinetics by avoiding competition from other reaction intermediates on the active site. Herein, the kinetic energy barrier of the O-O coupling for as-prepared sulfated Co-NiFe-LDH nanosheets is significantly reduced, resulting in the formation of M-OOH on the active site at low overpotential, which is directly confirmed by in situ Raman and charge transfer fitting results. Moreover, catalysts constructed from active sites of highly efficient intermediates make a reliable model for studying the mechanism of the OER in proton transfer restriction. In weakly alkaline environments, a sequential proton-electron transfer (SPET) mechanism replaces the concerted proton-electron transfer (CPET) mechanism, and the proton transfer step becomes the RDS; high-speed consumption of reaction intermediates (M-OOH) induces sulfated Co-NiFe-LDH to exhibit excellent kinetics.

Direct observation of the dynamic reconstructed active phase of perovskite LaNiO3 for the oxygen-evolution reaction

Ni-based transition metal oxides are promising oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) catalysts due to their abundance and high activity. Identification and manipulation of the chemical properties of the real active phase on the catalyst surface is crucial to improve the reaction kinetics and efficiency of the OER. Herein, we used electrochemical-scanning tunnelling microscopy (EC-STM) to directly observe structural dynamics during the OER on LaNiO₃ (LNO) epitaxial thin films. Based on comparison of dynamic topographical changes in different compositions of LNO surface termination, we propose that reconstruction of surface morphology originated from transition of Ni species on LNO surface termination during the OER. Furthermore, we showed that the change in surface topography of LNO was induced by Ni(OH)₂/NiOOH redox transformation by quantifying STM images. Our findings demonstrate that in situ characterization for visualization and quantification of thin films is very important for revealing the dynamic nature of the interface of catalysts under electrochemical conditions. This strategy is crucial for in-depth understanding of the intrinsic catalytic mechanism of the OER and rational design of high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

CoMoO4-CoP/NC heterostructure anchored on hollow polyhedral N-doped carbon skeleton for efficient water splitting

We report the synthesis and electrocatalytic properties of a CoMoO₄-CoP heterostructure anchored on a hollow polyhedral N-doped carbon skeleton (CoMoO₄-CoP/NC) for water-splitting applications. The preparation involved the anion exchange of MoO₄^2- to the organic ligand of ZIF-67, the self-hydrolysis of MoO₄^2-, and NaH₂PO₂ phosphating annealing. CoMoO₄ was found to enhance thermal stability and prevent active site agglomeration during annealing, while the hollow structure of CoMoO₄-CoP/NC provided a large specific surface area and high porosity that facilitated mass transport and charge transfer. The interfacial electron transfer from Co to Mo and P sites promoted the generation of electron-deficient Co sites and electron-enriched P sites, which accelerated water dissociation. CoMoO₄-CoP/NC exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH solution, with overpotentials of 122 mV and 280 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, respectively. The CoMoO₄-CoP/NC‖CoMoO₄-CoP/NC two-electrode system only required an overall water splitting (OWS) cell voltage of 1.62 V to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 in an alkaline electrolytic cell. In addition, the material showed comparable activity to 20% Pt/C‖RuO₂ in a pure water home-made membrane electrode device, demonstrating potential for practical applications in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. Our results suggest that CoMoO₄-CoP/NC is a promising electrocatalyst for efficient and cost-effective water splitting.

Operando spectroscopies capturing surface reconstruction and interfacial electronic regulation by FeOOH@Fe2O3@Ni(OH)2 heterostructures for robust oxygen evolution reaction

Developing high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and understanding the phase evolution in the catalytic process are vital to improving the overall efficiency of electrochemical water splitting. Herein, a hybrid heterogeneous FeOOH@Fe₂O₃@Ni(OH)₂ electrocatalyst with robust OER intrinsic activity and a low overpotential of 269 mV to obtain a current density of 100 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope value of 60.15 mV dec^-1 is effectively prepared. The dynamic surface evolution has been detected by in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which exposes that FeOOH@Fe₂O₃@Ni(OH)₂ is reconstituted as Ni(Fe)OOH demonstrated as catalytically active species under high potential. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicates that partial electrons of Ni in the heterogeneous interface transfer to Fe. Furthermore, partial Fe doping of NiOOH under high potential accompanied by the oxidized Ni³⁺ with optimized d-orbit electronic configuration for nearly unity e_g occupancy results in proper chemisorption bonding strength for oxygen reaction intermediates and is conducive to enhancing OER reaction kinetics. This work provides ideas that multicomponent heterostructure can adjust the electronic structure of iron and nickel to enhance the intrinsic activity of OER, which could help with the design and synthesis of high-performance OER catalysts used in energy storage and conversion.

Oxidation State Engineering in Octahedral Ni by Anchored Sulfate to Boost Intrinsic Oxygen Evolution Activity

Promoting the electron occupancy of active sites to unity is an effective method to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of spinel oxides, but it remains a great challenge. Here, an in situ approach is developed to modify the valence state of octahedral Ni cations in NiFe₂O₄ inverse spinel via surface sulfates (SO₄^2-). Different from previous studies, SO₄^2- is directly anchored on the spinel surface instead of forming from uncontrolled conversion or surface reconstruction. Experiment and theoretical calculations reveal the precise adsorption sites and spatial arrangement for SO₄^2- species. As a main promoting factor, surface SO₄^2- effectively converts the crystal field stable Ni state (t_2g⁶e_g²) to the near-unity e_g electron state (t_2g⁶e_g¹). Moreover, the inevitable oxygen vacancies (V_o) further optimize the energy barrier of the potential-determining step (from OH* to O*). This co-modification strategy enhances turnover frequency-based electrocatalytic activity about two orders higher than the control sample without surface sulfates. This work may provide insight into the OER activity enhancement mechanism by the oxyanion groups.

Spin-Selective Coupling in Mott-Schottky Er2 O3 -Co Boosts Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

Alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical to electrochemical energy conversion technology, yet the rational breaking of thermodynamic inhibition for ORR through spin regulation remains a challenge. Herein, a Mott-Schottky catalyst consisting of Er₂ O₃ -Co particles uniformly implanted into carbon nanofibers (Er₂ O₃ -Co/CNF) is designed for enhancing ORR via spin-selective coupling. The optimized Er₂ O₃ -Co/CNF affords a high half-wave potential (0.835 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) and onset potential (0.989 V_RHE ) for the ORR surpassing individual Co/CNF and Er₂ O₃ /CNF. Theoretical calculations reveal the introduction of Er₂ O₃ optimizes the electronic structure of Co through Er(4f)-O(2p)-Co(3d) gradient orbital coupling, resulting in significantly enhanced ORR performance. Through gradient orbital coupling, the induced spin-up hole in Co 3d states endows the Er-O-Co unit active site with a spin-selective coupling channel for electron transition. This favors the decrease of the energy gap in the potential-limiting step, thus achieving a high theoretical limiting potential of 0.77 V_RHE for the Er₂ O₃ -Co. Moreover, the potential practicability of Er₂ O₃ -Co/CNF as an air-cathode is also demonstrated in Zn-air batteries. This work is believed to provide, new perspectives for the design of efficient ORR electrocatalysts by engineering spin-selective coupling induced by rare-earth oxides.

Sol-Gel-Derived Ordered Mesoporous High Entropy Spinel Ferrites and Assessment of Their Photoelectrochemical and Electrocatalytic Water Splitting Performance

The novel material class of high entropy oxides with their unique and unexpected physicochemical properties is a candidate for energy applications. Herein, it is reported for the first time about the physico- and (photo-) electrochemical properties of ordered mesoporous (CoNiCuZnMg)Fe₂ O₄ thin films synthesized by a soft-templating and dip-coating approach. The A-site high entropy ferrites (HEF) are composed of periodically ordered mesopores building a highly accessible inorganic nanoarchitecture with large specific surface areas. The mesoporous spinel HEF thin films are found to be phase-pure and crack-free on the meso- and macroscale. The formation of the spinel structure hosting six distinct cations is verified by X-ray-based characterization techniques. Photoelectron spectroscopy gives insight into the chemical state of the implemented transition metals supporting the structural characterization data. Applied as photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting, the HEFs are photostable over several hours but show only low photoconductivity owing to fast surface recombination, as evidenced by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy. When applied as oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst, the HEF thin films possess overpotentials of 420 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 in 1 m KOH. The results imply that the increase of the compositional disorder enhances the electronic transport properties, which are beneficial for both energy applications.

Spinel-Derived Formation and Amorphization of Bimetallic Oxyhydroxides for Efficient Electrocatalytic Biomass Oxidation

Replacing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with water-assisted oxidation of organic molecules represents a promising approach for achieving sustainable electrochemical biomass utilization. Among numerous OER catalysts, spinels have received substantial attention due to their manifold compositions and valence states, yet their application in biomass conversions remains rare. Herein, a series of spinels were investigated for the selective electrooxidation of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, two model substrates for versatile value-added chemical products. Spinel sulfides universally exhibit superior catalytic performance compared to that of spinel oxides, and further investigations show that the replacement of oxygen with sulfur led to the complete phase transition of spinel sulfides into amorphous bimetallic oxyhydroxides during electrochemical activation, serving as the active species. Excellent values of conversion rate (100%), selectivity (100%), faradaic efficiency (>95%), and stability were achieved via sulfide-derived amorphous CuCo-oxyhydroxide. Furthermore, a volcano-like correlation was established between their BEOR and OER activities based on an OER-assisted organic oxidation mechanism.

Rod-Like Nanostructured Cu-Co Spinel with Rich Oxygen Vacancies for Efficient Electrocatalytic Dechlorination

Dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂) hydrodechlorination to methane (CH₄) is a promising approach to remove the halogenated contaminants and generate clean energy. In this work, rod-like nanostructured CuCo₂O₄ spinels with rich oxygen vacancies are designed for highly efficient electrochemical reduction dechlorination of dichloromethane. Microscopy characterizations revealed that the special rod-like nanostructure and rich oxygen vacancies can efficiently enhance surface area, electronic/ionic transport, and expose more active sites. The experimental tests demonstrated that CuCo₂O₄-3 with rod-like nanostructures outperformed other morphology of CuCo₂O₄ spinel nanostructures in catalytic activity and product selectivity. The highest methane production of 148.84 μmol in 4 h with a Faradaic efficiency of 21.61% at -2.94 V (vs SCE) is shown. Furthermore, the density function theory proved oxygen vacancies significantly decreased the energy barrier to promote the catalyst in the reaction and O_v-Cu was the main active site in dichloromethane hydrodechlorination. This work explores a promising way to synthesize the highly efficient electrocatalysts, which may be an effective catalyst for dichloromethane hydrodechlorination to methane.

Unraveling the π-interaction of NiFe-based metal-organic frameworks with enhanced oxygen evolution: Optimizing electronic structure and facilitating electron transfer modulation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with conjugation carboxylate ligands as electrocatalysts can significantly improve oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the role of π-interaction on the reactive sites of OER is often neglected. We intend to unravel the mechanism of how π-interaction enhances OER performance. The results of Rietveld refinement, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and in-situ Raman spectra show that π-interaction can efficiently modulate the local spin configuration of metal centers, facilitate γ-Ni_1-xFe_xOOH active species with high-valence Ni sites modified by high-spin Fe, accelerate electron transfer, optimize the d-band center together with the beneficial rate-determining step of OER. NiFe-BPDC MOFs/NF with 0.8559 eV π-interaction energy generated γ-Ni_1-xFe_xOOH in only 60 s at 1.4 V, demonstrating that π-interaction promotes the rapid generation of highly active reactive sites. Furthermore, the results of in-situ Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra reveal that the deprotonation and deoxygenation steps of OER are accompanied by changes in the oxidation state of metal ions and the generation of oxygen vacancies on the surface of catalysts. In addition, NiFe-BPDC MOFs/NF rapidly completes the deprotonation and deoxygenation steps, and it requires only 288 mV overpotential to reach 100 mA/cm² with 100 h of stability, suggesting promising industrial application.

Strategies for Promoting Catalytic Performance of Ru-based Electrocatalysts towards Oxygen/Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Ru-based materials hold great promise for substituting Pt as potential electrocatalysts toward water electrolysis. Significant progress is made in the fabrication of advanced Ru-based electrocatalysts, but an in-depth understanding of the engineering methods and induced effects is still in their early stage. Herein, we organize a review that focusing on the engineering strategies toward the substantial improvement in electrocatalytic OER and HER performance of Ru-based catalysts, including geometric structure, interface, phase, electronic structure, size, and multicomponent engineering. Subsequently, the induced enhancement in catalytic performance by these engineering strategies are also elucidated. Furthermore, some representative Ru-based electrocatalysts for the electrocatalytic HER and OER applications are also well presented. Finally, the challenges and prospects are also elaborated for the future synthesis of more effective Ru-based catalysts and boost their future application.

Hollow Heterostructured Nanocatalysts for Boosting Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

The implementation of electrochemical water splitting demands the development and application of electrocatalysts to overcome sluggish reaction kinetics of hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER). Hollow nanostructures, particularly for hollow heterostructured nanomaterials can provide multiple solutions to accelerate the HER/OER kinetics owing to their advantageous merit. Herein, the recent advances of hollow heterostructured nanocatalysts and their excellent performance for water splitting are systematically summarized. Starting by illustrating the intrinsically advantageous features of hollow heterostructures, achievements in engineering hollow heterostructured electrocatalysts are also highlighted with the focus on structural design, interfacial engineering, composition regulation, and catalytic evaluation. Finally, some perspective insights and future challenges of hollow heterostructured nanocatalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting are also discussed.

Synthesis of bifunctional NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDH)/Mo-doped g-C3N4 electrocatalyst for efficient methanol oxidation and seawater splitting

To boost the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) of pristine NiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH), the NiFe-LDH/Mo-doped graphitic carbon nitride (NiFe-LDH/MoCN) heterojunction was synthesized herein through hydrothermal method. The establishment of built-in electric field in NiFe-LDH/MoCN heterojunction enhanced the electrochemical oxidation activities towards both seawater splitting and methanol oxidation, via the improving electrocatalyst surface wettability and conductivity. Almost 10-fold enhancement of turnover frequency (TOF) and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) than pure NiFe-LDH implied more active sites to participate in catalytic reactions via Mo doping and the formation of heterostructure. Moreover, the local charge redistribution demonstrated in the NiFe-LDH/MoCN interface region may favor the adsorption of methanol and OH^- in the seawater. The present work may expound the strong coupling interaction and the establishment of built-in electric field in the interface between NiFe-LDH and semiconductor to enhance both methanol oxidation and seawater oxidation for NiFe-LDH.

Exceptional catalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction via two-dimensional graphene multilayer confined metal-organic frameworks

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in many renewable energy technologies such as water splitting and metal-air batteries. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are appealing to design efficient OER electrocatalysts, however, their intrinsic poor conductivity strongly hinders the activity. Here, we show a strategy to boost the OER activity of poor-conductive MOFs by confining them between graphene multilayers. The resultant NiFe-MOF//G gives a record-low overpotential of 106 mV to reach 10 mA cm⁻² and retains the activity over 150 h, which is in significant contrast to 399 mV of the pristine NiFe-MOF. We use X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and computations to demonstrate that the nanoconfinement from graphene multilayers not only forms highly reactive NiO₆-FeO₅ distorted octahedral species in MOF structure but also lowers limiting potential for water oxidation reaction. We also demonstrate that the strategy is applicable to other MOFs of different structures to largely enhance their electrocatalytic activities.

Magnetic Field Manipulation of Tetrahedral Units in Spinel Oxides for Boosting Water Oxidation

Magnetic field enhanced electrocatalysis has recently emerged as a promising strategy for the development of a viable and sustainable hydrogen economy via water oxidation. Generally, the effects of magnetic field enhanced electrocatalysis are complex including magnetothermal, magnetohydrodynamic and spin selectivity effects. However, the exploration of magnetic field effect on the structure regulation of electrocatalyst is still unclear whereas is also essential for underpinning the mechanism of magnetic enhancement on the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. Here, it is identified that in a mixed NiFe₂ O₄ (NFO), a large magnetic field can force the Ni²⁺ cations to migrate from the octahedral (O_h ) sites to tetrahedral (T_d ) sites. As a result, the magnetized NFO electrocatalyst (NFO-M) shows a two-fold higher current density than that of the pristine NFO in alkaline electrolytes. The OER enhancement of NFO is also observed at 1 T (NFO@1T) under an operando magnetic field. Our first-principles calculations further confirm the mechanism of magnetic field driven structure regulation and resultant OER enhancement. These findings provide a strategy of manipulating tetrahedral units of spinel oxides by a magnetic field on boosting OER performance.

Deciphering the Space Charge Effect of the p-n Junction between Copper Sulfides and Molybdenum Selenides for Efficient Water Electrolysis in a Wide pH Range

Space charge transfer is crucial for an efficient electrocatalytic process, especially for narrow-band-gap metal sulfides/selenides. Herein, we designed and synthesized a core-shell structure which is an ultrathin MoSe₂ nanosheet coated CuS hollow nanoboxes (CuS@MoSe₂) to form an open p-n junction structure. The space charge effect in the p-n junction region will greatly improve electron mass transfer and conduction, and also have abundant active interfaces. It was used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for water oxidation at a wide pH range. It exhibits a low overpotential of 49 mV for the HER and 236 mV for the OER at a current density of 10 mA·cm^-2 in acidic pH, 72 mV for the HER and 219 mV at 10 mA·cm^-2 for the OER in alkaline pH, and 62 mV for the HER and 230 mV at 10 mA·cm^-2 for the OER under neutral conditions. The experimental results and density functional theory calculations testify that the p-n junction in CuS@MoSe₂ designed and synthesized has a strong space charge region with a synergistic effect. The built-in field can boost the electron transport during the electrocatalytic process and can stabilize the charged active center of the p-n junction. This will be beneficial to improve the electrocatalytic performance. This work provides the understanding of semiconductor heterojunction applications and regulating the electronic structure of active sites.

Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Fe/Co-MIL-88(NH2) Exhibiting High Peroxidase-like Activity and Its Application in Detection of Extracellular Vesicles

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have many attractive features, including tunable composition, rigid structure, controllable pore size, and large specific surface area, and thus are highly applicable in molecular analysis. Depending on the MOF structure, a high number of unsaturated metal sites can be exposed to catalyze chemical reactions. In the present work, we report that using both Co(II) and Fe(III) to prepare the MIL-88(NH₂) MOF, we can produce the bimetallic MOF that can catalyze the conversion of 3,3',5,5″-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to a color product through a reaction with H₂O₂ at a higher reaction rate than the monometallic Fe-MIL-88(NH₂). The Michaelis constants (K_m) of the catalytic reaction for TMB and H₂O₂ are 3-5 times smaller, and the catalytic constants (k_cat) are 5-10 times higher than those of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP), supporting ultrahigh peroxidase-like activity. These values are also much more superior to those of the HRP-mimicking MOFs reported previously. Interestingly, the bimetallic MOF can be coupled with glucose oxidase (GOx) to trigger the cascade enzymatic reaction for highly sensitive detection of extracellular vesicles (EVs), a family of important biomarkers. Through conjugation to the aptamer that recognizes the marker protein on EV surface, the MOF can help isolate the EVs from biological matrices, which are subsequently labeled by GOx via antibody recognition. The cascade enzymatic reaction between MOF and GOx enables the detection of EVs at a concentration as low as 7.8 × 10⁴ particles/mL. The assay can be applied to monitor EV secretion by cultured cells and also can successfully detect the different EV quantities in the sera samples collected from cancer patients and healthy controls. Overall, we prove that the bimetallic Fe/Co-MIL-88(NH₂) MOF, with its high peroxidase activity and high biocompatibility, is a valuable tool deployable in clinical assays to facilitate disease diagnosis and prognosis.

Electron delocalization triggers nonradical Fenton-like catalysis over spinel oxides

Nonradical Fenton-like catalysis offers opportunities to overcome the low efficiency and secondary pollution limitations of existing advanced oxidation decontamination technologies, but realizing this on transition metal spinel oxide catalysts remains challenging due to insufficient understanding of their catalytic mechanisms. Here, we explore the origins of catalytic selectivity of Fe-Mn spinel oxide and identify electron delocalization of the surface metal active site as the key driver of its nonradical catalysis. Through fine-tuning the crystal geometry to trigger Fe-Mn superexchange interaction at the spinel octahedra, ZnFeMnO₄ with high-degree electron delocalization of the Mn-O unit was created to enable near 100% nonradical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) at unprecedented utilization efficiency. The resulting surface-bound PMS* complex can efficiently oxidize electron-rich pollutants with extraordinary degradation activity, selectivity, and good environmental robustness to favor water decontamination applications. Our work provides a molecule-level understanding of the catalytic selectivity and bimetallic interactions of Fe-Mn spinel oxides, which may guide the design of low-cost spinel oxides for more selective and efficient decontamination applications.

Surface Design Strategy of Catalysts for Water Electrolysis

Hydrogen, a new energy carrier that can replace traditional fossil fuels, is seen as one of the most promising clean energy sources. The use of renewable electricity to drive hydrogen production has very broad prospects for addressing energy and environmental problems. Therefore, many researchers favor electrolytic water due to its green and low-cost advantages. The electrolytic water reaction comprises the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Understanding the OER and HER mechanisms in acidic and alkaline processes contributes to further studying the design of surface regulation of electrolytic water catalysts. The OER and HER catalysts are mainly reviewed for defects, doping, alloying, surface reconstruction, crystal surface structure, and heterostructures. Besides, recent catalysts for overall water splitting are also reviewed. Finally, this review paves the way to the rational design and synthesis of new materials for highly efficient electrocatalysis.

Oxygen-Plasma-Induced Hetero-Interface NiFe2O4/NiMoO4 Catalyst for Enhanced Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution

The electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen is an effective method for solving the rapid consumption of fossil fuel resources and the problem of global warming. The key to its success is to design an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst with efficient conversion and reliable stability. Interface engineering is one of the most effective approaches for adjusting local electronic configurations. Adding other metal elements is also an effective way to enrich active sites and improve catalytic activity. Herein, high-valence iron in a heterogeneous interface of NiFe₂O₄/NiMoO₄ composite was obtained through oxygen plasma to achieve excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability. In particular, 270 mV of overpotential is required to reach a current density of 50 mA cm⁻², and the overpotential required to reach 500 mA cm⁻² is only 309 mV. The electron transfer effect for high-valence iron was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The fast and irreversible reconstruction and the true active species in the catalytic process were identified by in situ Raman, ex situ XPS, and ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. This work provides a feasible design guideline to modify electronic structures, promote a metal to an active oxidation state, and thus develop an electrocatalyst with enhanced OER performance.

Co-Fe-P Nanosheet Arrays as a Highly Synergistic and Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The rational design and synthesis of highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of critical importance to the large-scale production of hydrogen by water electrolysis. Here, we develop a bimetallic, synergistic, and highly efficient Co-Fe-P electrocatalyst for OER, by selecting a two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) of Co-ZIF-L as the precursor. The Co-Fe-P electrocatalyst features pronounced synergistic effects induced by notable electron transfer from Co to Fe, and a large electrochemical active surface area achieved by organizing the synergistic Co-Fe-P into hierarchical nanosheet arrays with disordered grain boundaries. Such features facilitate the generation of abundant and efficiently exposed Co³⁺ sites for electrocatalytic OER and thus enable Co-Fe-P to deliver excellent activity (overpotential and Tafel slope as low as 240 mV and 36 mV dec^-1, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH solution). The Co-Fe-P electrocatalyst also shows great durability by steadily working for up to 24 h. Our work thus provides new insight into the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts based on nanoscale and/or electronic structure engineering.

Conversion of Interfacial Chemical Bonds for Inducing Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Water Splitting

Sp-C-hybridized alkyne bonds present the natural advantages of interacting with metal atoms and have the ability to generate a large number of new catalytic active sites on the surface and the interfaces, thus greatly promoting the efficient progress of various light/electrochemical reactions. In this work, we have successfully fabricated a novel type of interfacial structure containing sp-C-Mo/O bonds and mixed Mo valence states with outstanding catalytic activity and stability for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) overall water splitting in a wide pH range (0-14), due to the presence of sp-carbon-rich graphdiyne. For example, in alkaline conditions (pH = 14), the overpotentials of oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions at 10 mA cm^-2 are 165 and 8 mV. When being used as an electrolyzer, the cell voltage of this catalyst is only 1.40 V to achieve 10 mA cm^-2. The high PEC activity of graphdiyne@molybdenum oxide originates from the conversion of chemical bonds at the sp-C hybrid interface and the coexistence of multivalent states of molybdenum, triggering a large number of catalytic active sites, greatly promoting charge transfer and lowering water dissociation energy.

Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Energy Conversion and Storage: Design Strategies Under and Beyond the Energy Scaling Relationship

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the essential module in energy conversion and storage devices such as electrolyzer, rechargeable metal-air batteries and regenerative fuel cells. The adsorption energy scaling relations between the reaction intermediates, however, impose a large intrinsic overpotential and sluggish reaction kinetics on OER catalysts. Developing advanced electrocatalysts with high activity and stability based on non-noble metal materials is still a grand challenge. Central to the rational design of novel and high-efficiency catalysts is the development and understanding of quantitative structure-activity relationships, which correlate the catalytic activities with structural and electronic descriptors. This paper comprehensively reviews the benchmark descriptors for OER electrolysis, aiming to give an in-depth understanding on the origins of the electrocatalytic activity of the OER and further contribute to building the theory of electrocatalysis. Meanwhile, the cutting-edge research frontiers for proposing new OER paradigms and crucial strategies to circumvent the scaling relationship are also summarized. Challenges, opportunities and perspectives are discussed, intending to shed some light on the rational design concepts and advance the development of more efficient catalysts for enhancing OER performance.

Cation/Anion Dual-Vacancy Pair Modulated Atomically-Thin Sex -Co3 S4 Nanosheets with Extremely High Water Oxidation Performance in Ultralow-Concentration Alkaline Solutions

The density functional theory calculation results reveal that the adjacent defect concentration and electronic spin state can effectively activate the Co^III sites in the atomically thin nanosheets, facilitating the thermodynamic transformation of *O to *OOH, thus offering ultrahigh charge transfer properties and efficiently stabilizing the phase. This undoubtedly evidences that, for metal sulfides, the atom-scale cation/anion vacancy pair and surface electronic spin state can play a great role in enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction. Inspired by the theoretical prediction, interconnected selenium (Se) wired ultrathin Co₃ S₄ (Se_x -Co₃ S₄ ) nanosheets with Co/S (Se) dual-vacancies (Se_1.0 -Co₃ S₄ -V_S/Se -V_Co ) pairs are constructed by a simple approach. As an efficient sulfur host material, in an ultralow-concentration KOH solution (0.1 m), Se_1.0 -Co₃ S₄ -V_S/Se -V_Co presents outstanding durability up to 165 h and a low overpotential of 289.5 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 , which outperform the commercial Co₃ S₄ nanosheets (NSs) and RuO₂ . Moreover, the turnover frequency of Se_1.0 -Co₃ S₄ -V_S/Se -V_Co is 0.00965 s^-1 at an overpotential of 0.39 V, which is 5.7 times that of Co₃ S₄ NSs, and 5.8 times that of commercial RuO₂ . The finding offers a rational design strategy to create the multi-defect structure in catalysts toward high-efficiency water electrolysis.

Electrochemical deposition of amorphous cobalt oxides for oxygen evolution catalysis

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial in water splitting for hydrogen production. However, its high over-potential and sluggish kinetics cause an additional energy loss and hinder its practical application. The cobalt spinel oxide Co₃O₄ exhibits a high catalytic activity for the OER in alkaline solutions. However, the activity requires further enhancement to meet the industrial demand for hydrogen production. This paper presents an electrochemical deposition method to obtain cobalt oxides with a controllable crystallinity on carbon paper (CP). Usually, cobalt oxides grown on CP have a Co₃O₄ spinel oxide structure. The self-supported Co₃O₄/CP exhibited a considerable catalytic activity for the OER. When a VS₂ layer grown on the CP beforehand by a hydrothermal method was used as substrate, the deposited cobalt oxides were in an amorphous state, denoted as CoO_x/VS₂/CP, which exhibited a higher OER activity and better stability than those of Co₃O₄/CP. The enhancement in the catalytic activity was attributed to the mixture formation of different types of cobalt species, including Co₃O₄, CoO, Co(OH)₂, and metallic Co, because of the reduction by VS₂. We also clarify the significance of the crystallinity of cobalt oxides in the improvement in the OER activity. This process can also be applied to the direct formation of other types of self-supported oxide electrodes for OER catalysis.

Amorphous cobalt oxides electrodeposited on VS₂ grown on carbon paper show better catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction than crystalline Co₃O₄ on carbon paper.

Electronic interplay: synergism of binary transition metals and role of M-N-S site towards oxygen electrocatalysis

Towards rational catalyst development, a binary Fe-Co centre has been coordinated with S and N in a nanocarbon matrix.
