Incorporation of CrIII into a Keggin Polyoxometalate as a Chemical Strategy to Stabilize a Labile {CrIIIO4} Tetrahedral Conformation and Promote Unattended Single-Ion Magnet Properties

2,5-Thiophenedicarboxylic Acid Bridging Hexameric CeIII-Substituted Selenotungstate and Its Application for Detecting Mucin 1

The development of polyoxometalate chemistry not only is derived from the continuous discovery of novel polyoxometalates (POMs) but also stems from the exploitation of their new functionalities. In this work, we obtained a rigid sulfur-containing heterocyclic ligand-linking aggregate [N(CH3)4]10Na6H6[Ce8(H2O)26W8(HTDA)2(TDA)2O20][SeW4O18]2[SeW9O33]4·112H2O (1) (H2TDA = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid). Its polyanionic unit consists of one [Ce4(H2O)13W4O10(HTDA)(TDA)O10]18+ cluster and two kinds of Keggin-type [SeW4O18] and [SeW9O33] segments. It is noteworthy that H2TDA ligands not only work as connectors to link two symmetrical {[Ce4(H2O)13W4(HTDA)(TDA)O10][SeW4O18][SeW9O33]2}11- units but also function as ornaments to graft to the polyanionic backbone. Furthermore, 1 and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) were deposited on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by the electropolymerization (EPM) method, resulting in a 1-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (1-PEDOT) composite film, which can provide sufficient binding sites to immobilize Au nanoparticles (Au NPs). Hereafter, the Au NPs-immobilized 1-PEDOT modified electrode (Au/1-PEDOT/GCE) was used to construct an electrochemical aptasensor to detect mucin 1, showing a low detection limit of 29.5 fM in the Tris solution. This work not only demonstrates that rigid heterocyclic ligands are beneficial for the creation of novel rare-earth-substituted selenotungstate hybrids but also provides more enlightenment for POM-based materials used for electrochemical detection of cancer markers.

Spin canting and slow magnetic relaxation in mononuclear cobalt(II) sulfadiazine ternary complexes

Monomeric [Co(SDZ)2phen] (1) and [Co(SDZ)(bq)Cl] (2) complexes (SDZ = sulfadiazine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, and bq = 2,2'-biquinoline) have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that SDZ acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the sulfonamide and the pyrimidine N atoms in both compounds. In complex 1, the coordination sphere consists of two SDZ ligands and a bis-chelating phen ligand, giving rise to a CoN6 coordination sphere. On the other hand, 2 has a CoN4Cl core, with two N-atoms from SDZ and two from the bq ligand. Both compounds have been studied by dc and ac magnetometry and shown to display slow magnetic relaxation under an optimum external dc field (1 kOe) at low temperatures. Moreover, compound 2 displays long range magnetic ordering provided by spin-canted antiferromagnetism, which has been characterized by further field-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements, FC/ZFC curves, hysteresis loops and frequency-independent ac curves. The signs of the calculated D parameters, positive in 1 and negative in 2, have been rationalized according to the two lowest-lying transitions in the orbital energy diagrams derived from ab initio ligand field theory (AILFT). In a subsequent attempt to reveal the possible hidden zero-field SMM behaviour, Ni(II)-based 3 and Co(II)-doped Ni(II)-based (with a Ni : Co ratio of 0.9 : 0.1) heterometallic compound 2Ni were synthesized.

Deep oxidative desulfurization of gas oil by iron(III)-substituted polyoxometalate immobilized on nickel(II) oxide, ((n-C4H9)4N)4H[PW11FeO39]@NiO, as an efficient nanocatalyst

Sulfur compounds are among the most unfavorable constituents of petroleum derivatives, so stringent regulations have been established to curb their atmospheric emissions. In this regard, a new nanocomposite ((n-C4H9)4N)4H[PW11FeO39]@NiO) was synthesized composed of quaternary ammonium bromide salt of ironIII-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalate immobilized on nickel(II) oxide nanoceramics via sol-gel method. The assembled (n-C4H9)4N)4H[PW11FeO39]@NiO nanocomposite was identified by FT-IR, UV-Vis, XRD, SEM, EDX, and TGA-DTG methods. The characterization results exhibited that ((n-C4H9)4N)4H[PW11FeO39] dispersed uniformly over the surface of the NiO nanoceramics. The ((n-C4H9)4N)4H[PW11FeO39]@NiO nanocomposite was employed as a heterogeneous nanocatalyst in the extractive coupled oxidation desulfurization (ECOD) of real gas oil and dibenzothiophene (DBT) as a model compound. Under relatively moderate conditions, the catalytic performance of the ((n-C4H9)4N)4H[PW11FeO39]@NiO in the ECOD procedure was studied by incorporating acetic acid/hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant system at a volume ratio of 1:2. According to the ECOD results, the ((n-C4H9)4N)4H[PW11FeO39]@NiO demonstrated the effectiveness of up to 95% with 0.1 g at 60 °C under optimal operating conditions. Moreover, the ((n-C4H9)4N)4H[PW11FeO39]@NiO nanocatalyst could be separated and reused for five runs without a noticeable decrease in the ECOD process. This study provides a promising way to meet the target of ultra-low sulfur as an essential process in oil refineries.

[α-AsW9O33]9- bridged hexagonal clusters of Ln(III) showing field induced SMM behavior: experimental and theoretical insight

Polyoxometalates (POM), as inorganic polydentate oxygen donors, provide binding opportunities for oxophilic lanthanide metal centers to construct novel Ln-substituted POM materials with exciting structures and attractive properties. Herein, we have reported four arsenotungstate [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- based lanthanide-containing polyoxometalates [Cs_xK_36-x{Ln₆(H₂O)₁₂(α-AsW₉O₃₃)₆}]·yH₂O (Ln = Er (1), Gd (2), Ho (3), and Tb (4)), which are synthesized in an alkaline medium. Complexes 1-3 are the dimeric structures of [Ln₃(H₂O)₆(α-AsW₉O₃₃)₃]^18- polyanions, whereas complex 4 is a hexamer of the polyanion [Tb (H₂O)₂(α-AsW₉O₃₃)]^6- as a building unit. In all the complexes, [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- units are staggered up and down and give rise to the chair conformation, where one [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- unit bridges two Ln(III) centers through four μ₂-oxygen and two terminal oxygen atoms, resulting in the hexagonal arrangement of lanthanides. The dynamic magnetic measurement indicates that only complex 1 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an applied dc field (1500 Oe). To gain insight into the slow relaxation of magnetization in complex 1, the ligand-field parameters and the splitting of the ground-state multiplet of the Er(III) ions have been estimated. The ab initio calculation results confirm that the ground state wave function of these molecules (1, 3, and 4) is mainly composed of a mixture of m_J states, and the non-axial crystal field (CF) terms are more predominant than the axial CF term. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 reveal that the photoexcitation O → M ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) of arsenotungstate fragments is effectively quenched due to the spatial coordination environment around the Ln(III) ion.

Speciation atlas of polyoxometalates in aqueous solutions

Speciation is the key parameter in solution chemistry that describes the composition, concentration, and oxidation state of each chemical form of an element present in a sample. The speciation study of complex polyatomic ions has remained challenging because of the large number of factors affecting stability and the limited number of direct methods. To address these challenges, we developed the speciation atlas of 10 polyoxometalates commonly used in catalytic and biological applications in aqueous solutions, where the speciation atlas provides both a species distribution database and a predictive model for other polyoxometalates to be used. Compiled for six different polyoxometalate archetypes with three types of addenda ions based on 1309 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra under 54 different conditions, the atlas has revealed a previously unknown behavior of polyoxometalates that may account for their potency as biological agents and catalysts. The atlas is intended to promote the interdisciplinary use of metal oxides in various scientific fields.

Synthesis and Structure of a Copper-Based Functional Network for Efficient Organic Dye Adsorption

In the work, by incorporating polyoxometalates (POMs) into a copper(II)-based network, a novel three-dimensional (3D) porous framework, [Cu₁₇Cl₃(trz)₁₂]H₃[GaW₁₂O₄₀]·9H₂O (Cu-GaW-TRZ), was successfully prepared and explored for the adsorption of dyes. The adsorption capacity of Cu-GaW-TRZ was calculated as 13.11 mg/g, and the dye adsorption rate equaled 96.2% for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Furthermore, this recyclable adsorbent is stable enough without obvious loss of adsorption capacity for at least five runs. Meanwhile, the structure of the macropores is suitable for the entry of large molecular dyes, and [GaW₁₂O₄₀]^5- also can achieve efficient adsorption for cationic dyes. The results displayed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and were well matched for MB adsorption onto Cu-GaW-TRZ. The free energy, entropy, and enthalpy of the thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of MB were calculated, which revealed that the adsorption process was befitting for the adsorption of MB.

Silver-Templated γ-Keggin Alkyltin-Oxo Cluster: Electronic Structure and Optical Limiting Effect

As one of the most representative polyoxometalate (POM) structures, Keggin clusters have attracted considerable attention. Nevertheless, the noble-metal-templated Keggin structure has not been reported to date. In this work, for the first time, a Ag atom was successfully incorporated to template the formation of a γ-Keggin alkytin-oxo cluster. Moreover, the central Ag atom has brought a significant heavy atom effect, showing the important influence on the electronic structure and optical properties. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the Ag atom affects the frontier molecular orbitals and excited states of the AgSn₁₂ cluster, and also the process of electron transfer. The solid structure of the AgSn₁₂ cluster exhibits a significant third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response, and an excellent optical limiting effect has been experimentally verified. The success of this work opens the way for the construction and optical properties modulation of noble metal templated Keggin structures.

Slow magnetic relaxation in mononuclear octa-coordinate Fe(II) and Co(II) complexes from a Bpybox ligand

Two 3d transition metal mononuclear complexes, [(FeL₂)(ClO₄)₂]₂·CH₃CN (1) and (CoL₂)(ClO₄)₂·2CH₃CN (2), have been prepared from a rigid tetradentate bpybox (L = 6,6'-bis(2,5-dihydrooxazol-4-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine) ligand. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses together with the help of calculations show that both compounds are octa-coordinate. Direct current magnetic studies reveal their significant magnetic anisotropy. Impressively, field-induced relaxation of magnetism is observed in the two complexes and the apparent anisotropy barriers are 14.1 K for 1 and 21.6 K for 2, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that two Fe(II) centers in 1 have small negative D values of -4.897 and -4.825 cm^-1 and relatively small E values of 0.646 and 0.830 cm^-1, indicating a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. In contrast, the D and E values in the Co(II) center of 2 are 46.42 cm^-1 and 11.51 cm^-1, featuring a rhombic anisotropy. This work demonstrates that field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in 3d transition metal complexes with high coordination numbers can be manipulated through rigid ligand design.

Investigation on the Mechanism of Radical Intermediate Formation and Moderate Oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD by the Synergistic Effect of Multisubstituted Polyoxometalates in Perovskite Solar Cells

Conventional oxidation of 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) by air would bring various drawbacks for perovskite solar cells (PSCs), such as low power conversion efficiency (PCE) and poor stability. Here, a series of heteroatom-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs), H₄PMo₁₁VO₄₀ (PMo₁₁V), H₅PMo₁₀V₂O₄₀ (PMo₁₀V₂), and H₆PMo₉V₃O₄₀ (PMo₉V₃) are prepared and applied as p-type dopants to realize quantitative and controllable oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD under an inert condition. The possible mechanism and electron donor regions in the oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD are investigated using two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and the relationship between POM structures and the oxidation degree of Spiro-OMeTAD is proposed. In addition, the synergistic effect of heteroatoms makes V₂-substituted PMo₁₀V₂ exhibit appropriate oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD and promoted the highest efficient hole extraction as well as the decreased charge recombination. Therefore, the champion device doped with PMo₁₀V₂ shows a PCE of 20.41% and a superior open circuit voltage (V_oc) of 1.133 V, surpassing that of the pristine device (18.61%). This work presents a fresh perspective to the controllable oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD employing economical inorganic POM dopants, which would promote the commercialization of PSCs.

The rationalized pathway from field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in CoII–WIV chains to single-chain magnetism in isotopological CoII–WV analogues

The change of the oxidation state from WIV to WV in isotopological CoII–[W(CN)8]n− chains leads to the appearence of pronounced single-chain magnet behaviour.

pH-Controlled assembly of [ZnW12O40]6--based hybrids from a 0D dimer to a 2D network: synthesis, crystal structure, and photocatalytic performance in transformation of toluene into benzaldehyde

Polyoxometalate-based organic-inorganic hybrids have attracted considerable attention due to their fascinating structures and wide application prospects. In this work, using the same building blocks, ligands and metal ions (ZnW₁₂O₄₀^6-(ZnW₁₂), 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy), and Cu²⁺), we synthesized three new POM-based hybrids by controlling the pH values of the reaction systems. These three compounds {(Zn_0.6(H₂)_0.4W₁₂O₄₀)[Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)][Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)₂][Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)₃]}₂·6H₂O (1), (Me₄N)₂{ZnW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)][Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)₃]}·5H₂O (2), and {(Zn_0.5(H₂)_0.5W₁₂O₄₀)[Cu(2,2'-bipy)][Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)][Cu(2,2'-bipy)(H₂O)₂]}·5H₂O (3) have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 appears as a dimeric cluster structure, while compounds 2 and 3 appear as a 1D chain structure and a 2D network, respectively. The semiconducting properties of compounds 1-3 are different, which was demonstrated by band gap (E_g) and photocurrent response measurements. Compound 3 can efficiently catalyze the photooxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde with high selectivity using molecular oxygen as the oxidant component. Moreover, compound 3 was recycled and reused three times without significant degradation in conversion and selectivity. In addition, the mechanism of the photocatalytic reaction was also investigated.

{BW12O40} Hybrids Modified by in Situ Synthesized Rigid Ligand with Supercapacitance and Photocatalytic Properties

Organic rigid ligand-modified polyoxometalate-based materials possess complex and diverse structures, promising electrochemical energy storage properties and outstanding photocatalytic capabilities. Hence, two new [BW₁₂O₄₀]^5-(abbreviated as {BW₁₂O₄₀})-based inorganic-organic hybrids [{Cu(en)₂(H₂O)}][{Cu(pdc)(en)}{Cu(en)₂}(BW₁₂O₄₀)]·2H₂O (1) and [{Cu^I₅(pz)₆(H₂O)₄}(BW₁₂O₄₀)] (2) (pdc = 2-picolinate, en = ethylenediamine, pz = pyrazine) were successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal method. Among them, pdc and pz were obtained by in situ transformation from 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H₂ pydc) and 2,3-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid (H₂pzdc), respectively. In compound 1, the {BW₁₂O₄₀} clusters as an intermediate junction connect with {Cu(pdc)(en)}{Cu(en)₂} and {Cu(en)₂(H₂O)} to form monomers, which in turn form supramolecular chains, sheets, and space network via hydrogen bonding. The {BW₁₂O₄₀} clusters are packed into copper-pyrazine frameworks in compound 2, and a unique polyoxometalate-based metal organic frameworks (POMOFs) structure with a new topology of {12}₂{6.12³.14²}₂{6².12.14².18}{6².12³.16}{6}₆ is formed via covalent bonds. When used as electrode materials for supercapacitors, the values of specific capacitance are 651.56 F g^-1 for 1-GCE and 584.43 F g^-1 for 2-GCE at a current density of 2.16 A g^-1 and good cycling stability (90.94%, 94.81% of the initial capacity after 5000 cycles at 15.12 A g^-1, respectively). The kinetic analysis reveals that surface capacitance plays a major role. Furthermore, both compounds can effectively degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) and Methylene blue (MB), showing the outstanding photocatalytic performance.

The Smallest Polyoxotungstate Retained by TRIS-Stabilization

A polycondensation reaction of the orthotungstate anion WO₄^2–, buffered at pH 7.5 in a TRIS-HCl (0.15 M) solution, results in the first example of a discrete polyoxotungstate anion, with just two W ions stabilized with TRIS ligands. It was isolated and characterized as Na₂[W^VI₂O₆(C₄O₃NH₁₀)₂]·6H₂O by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetrical analysis (TGA), and elemental analysis in solid state and by electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), ¹³C, and ¹⁸³W NMR, as well as Raman spectroscopy in solution. This synthesis demonstrates the crucial and new role of the added tris-alkoxy ligand in the development of a new hybrid TRIS-isopolytungstate with the lowest known nuclearity (so far) and the terminal oxygens substituted with two nitrogen atoms arising from amines of the TRIS ligands.

We report on the synthesis and characterization of a new hybrid isopolytungstate Na₂[W^VI₂O₆(C₄O₃NH₁₀)₂]·6H₂O with the, so far, lowest known nuclearity and the terminal oxygen atoms substituted with nitrogen arising from amine.

A Tellurium-Substituted Heteropolyniobate with Unique π-π Stacking and Ionic Conduction Property

A tetratellurium-substituted heteropolyoxoniobate with the formula K₂H[Cu(phen)(H₂O)]₄[Cu(phen)]₂[(LiNb₈Te₄O₄₀)]·34H₂O (1; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was hydrothermally prepared and structurally characterized. The compound represents the first hexavalent tellurium-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) so far. What is more, the POM cluster in 1 can elaborately self-assemble into a stable supramolecular framework with an ion conduction property through unique intermolecular π-π stacking.

A trapped hexaaqua CoII complex between the polyanionic sheets of decavanadate reveals high axial anisotropy and field induced SIM behaviour

In this work, we report an inorganic compound [{Co(H₂O)₆}²⁺{Na₄V₁₀O₂₈}^2-] (1) in which the polyanionic sheets of decavanadate play the role of a diamagnetic matrix that reduces the dipolar-dipolar and spin-spin interactions between [Co(H₂O)₆]⁺² units to suppress the fast tunnelling of magnetization. Structural analysis reveals that each [Co(H₂O)₆]⁺² complex is surrounded by four decavanadates and separated by a large internuclear distance (9 Å). It was also found that the adjacent decavanadates are connected via sodium ions and form a 2D sheet of the inorganic layer in which the [Co(H₂O)₆]²⁺ ions are present in between two layers. Detailed dc (direct current) and ac (alternating current) magnetic measurements disclose the presence of large easy-axis anisotropy (D = -102 cm^-1) and field induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour with a spin reversal barrier of U_eff = 50 K. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the relaxation time reveals that the Raman and QTM processes mainly play an important role rather than the thermally activated Orbach process in the overall relaxation dynamics of the studied compound. To analyse the electronic structure and magnetic properties of compound 1, ab initio calculations were performed which further support the experimental observations. Notably, the U_eff value of 1 represents the highest energy barrier reported for POM based SMMs with transition metal ions to date.

Polyoxometalate-based metal–organic frameworks for heterogeneous catalysis

POM-based MOFs simultaneously possessing the virtues of POMs and MOFs exhibit excellent heterogeneous catalytic properties.

Self-assembly of Keggin-type U(vi)-containing tungstophosphates with a sandwich structure: an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of sulfonyl pyrazoles

Two Keggin-type U(vi)-containing tungstophosphates with sandwich structure were synthesized and characterized. Compound 1 presents excellent catalytic activity towards the condensation cyclization of sulfonyl hydrazines with 1,3-diketones to synthesize sulfonyl pyrazoles.

Stable monovalent aluminum(i) in a reduced phosphomolybdate cluster as an active acid catalyst

Low-valent aluminum Al(i) chemistry has attracted extensive research interest due to its unique chemical and catalytic properties but is limited by its low stability. Herein, a hourglass phosphomolybdate cluster with a metal-center sandwiched by two benzene-like planar subunits and large steric-hindrance is used as a scaffold to stabilize low-valent Al(i) species. Two hybrid structures, (H₃O)₂(H₂bpe)₁₁[Al^III(H₂O)₂]₃{[Al^I(P₄Mo^V₆O₃₁H₆)₂]₃·7H₂O (abbr. Al₆{P₄Mo₆}₆) and (H₃O)₃(H₂bpe)₃[Al^I(P₄Mo^V₆O₃₁H₇)₂]·3.5H₂O (abbr. Al{P₄Mo₆}₂) (bpe = trans-1,2-di-(4-pyridyl)-ethylene) were successfully synthesized with Al(i)-sandwiched polyoxoanionic clusters as the first inorganic-ferrocene analogues of a monovalent group 13 element with dual Lewis and Brønsted acid sites. As dual-acid catalysts, these hourglass structures efficiently catalyze a solvent-free four-component domino reaction to synthesize 1,5-benzodiazepines. This work provides a new strategy to stabilize low-valent Al(i) species using a polyoxometalate scaffold.

Monovalent aluminum(i) species was successfully stabilized using a reduced phosphomolybdate scaffold as a dual-acid catalyst for a four-component domino reaction.

Nucleation mechanisms and speciation of metal oxide clusters

The self-assembly mechanisms of polyoxometalates (POMs) are still a matter of discussion owing to the difficult task of identifying all the chemical species and reactions involved. We present a new computational methodology that identifies the reaction mechanism for the formation of metal-oxide clusters and provides a speciation model from first-principles and in an automated manner. As a first example, we apply our method to the formation of octamolybdate. In our model, we include variables such as pH, temperature and ionic force because they have a determining effect on driving the reaction to a specific product. Making use of graphs, we set up and solved 2.8 × 105 multi-species chemical equilibrium (MSCE) non-linear equations and found which set of reactions fitted best with the experimental data available. The agreement between computed and experimental speciation diagrams is excellent. Furthermore, we discovered a strong linear dependence between DFT and empirical formation constants, which opens the door for a systematic rescaling.

Cation-Directed Synthetic Strategy Using 4f Tungstoantimonates as Nonlacunary Precursors for the Generation of 3d-4f Clusters

The first synthetic pathway using a series of four nonlacunary 4f-heterometal-substituted polyoxotungstate clusters Na₂₁[(Ln(H₂O)(OH)₂(CH₃COO))₃(WO₄)(SbW₉O₃₃)₃]·nH₂O (NaLnSbW₉; Ln = Tb^III, Dy^III, Ho^III, Er^III, Y^III) as precursors for the directed preparation of nine new 3d–4f heterometallic tungstoantimonates K₅Na₁₂H₃[TM(H₂O)Ln₃(H₂O)₅(W₃O₁₁)(SbW₉O₃₃)₃]·nH₂O (KTMLnSbW₉; TM = Co^II, Ni^II; Ln = Tb^III, Dy^III, Ho^III, Er^III, Y^III) has been developed. Systematic studies revealed an increased K content in the aqueous acidic reaction mixture to be the key step in the cation-directed preparation of 3d–4f compounds; among those, the Co-containing members represent the first examples of KCoLnSbW₉ (Ln = Tb^III, Dy^III, Ho^III, Er^III, Y^III) heterometallic tungstoantimonates exhibiting the SbW₉ building block. All 13 compounds have been characterized thoroughly in the solid state by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), revealing a cyclic trimeric polyoxometalate architecture with three SbW₉ units encapsulating a planar triangle of Ln^III ions in the case of NaLnSbW₉ and a heterometallic core of one TM^II and three Ln^III for KTMLnSbW₉ (TM = Co^II, Ni^II; Ln = Tb^III, Dy^III, Ho^III, Er^III, Y^III). The results obtained by XRD are supplemented by complementary characterization methods in the solid state such as IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis as well as in solution by UV–vis spectroscopy. Detailed magnetic studies on the representative compounds KTMDySbW₉ (TM = Co^II, Ni^II) and KCoYSbW₉ of the series revealed field-induced slow magnetic relaxation.

The first step-by-step synthetic protocol using preformed 4f tungstoantimonate clusters as nonlacunary precursors for the controlled preparation and thorough characterization of a family of nine new 3d−4f heterometallic polyoxometalates [TM(H₂O)Ln₃(H₂O)₅(W₃O₁₁)(SbW₉O₃₃)₃]^20- (KTMLnSbW₉) (TM = Co^II, Ni^II; Ln = Tb^III, Dy^III, Ho^III, Er^III, Y^III) is reported. Magnetic studies on the Dy^III-containing representatives [TM(H₂O)Dy₃(H₂O)₅(W₃O₁₁)(SbW₉O₃₃)₃]²⁰⁻ (TM = Co^II, Ni^II) show single-molecule-magnet behavior.

Ionic strength effect on regulating the synthetic assembly of polyoxometalate clusters with slow magnetic relaxation behavior

Three novel polyoxometalate (POM) clusters of K10Na10[Dy3(H2O)6Ni(H2O)(W3O11)(B-α-SbW9O33)3]·(H2O)45 (1), (NH4)5K4Na8[Dy3(H2O)6SbV(H2O)(W3O11)(B-α-SbW9O33)3]·(H2O)50 (2), and (NH4)9Na[Ni2(H2O)6(WO2)2(B-β-SbW9O33)2]·(H2O)24 (3) were successfully obtained using the same precursor under different ionic strength conditions. Structural analysis showed that compounds 1-3 possess discrepant structural characteristics in 1 M KCl, 1 M NH4Cl, and saturated NH4Cl, respectively. Among them, 2 is the first reported lanthanide cluster including both Sb3+ and Sb5+ in POM derivatives. Furthermore, the analysis of ac magnetic data proved that 1 and 2 embodied dramatic field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, and the effective barrier of 2 was estimated as Ueff/KB = 21.10 K based on the Orbach process. It was found that the structure and magnetic properties of POM materials can be regulated using an effective and satisfactory ionic strength-controlled strategy.
