Atomic Wires of Transition Metal Chalcogenides: A Family of 1D Materials for Flexible Electronics and Spintronics

Searching for the Thinnest Metallic Wire

One-dimensional materials have gained much attention in the last decades: from carbon nanotubes to ultrathin nanowires to few-atom atomic chains, these can all display unique electronic properties and great potential for next-generation applications. Exfoliable bulk materials could naturally provide a source for one-dimensional wires with a well-defined structure and electronics. Here, we explore a database of one-dimensional materials that could be exfoliated from experimentally known three-dimensional van der Waals compounds, searching for metallic wires that are resilient to Peierls distortions and could act as vias or interconnects for future downscaled electronic devices. As the one-dimensional nature makes these wires particularly susceptible to dynamical instabilities, we carefully characterize vibrational properties to identify stable phases and characterize electronic and dynamical properties. Our search discovers several stable wires; notably, we identify what could be the thinnest possible exfoliable metallic wire, CuC2, coming a step closer to the ultimate limit in material downscaling.

van der Waals Engineering of Charge Density Waves in One-Dimensional Nb6Te6 Nanowires

One-dimensional (1D) systems have played a crucial role in the development of fundamental physics and practical applications. Recently, transition metal monochalcogenide (TMM) wires based on molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W) have emerged as promising platforms for investigating 1D physics in pure van der Waals (vdW) platforms. Here, we report on the bottom-up fabrication of Nb6Te6 wires down to the single-wire limit. The unique properties of Nb6Te6 single wire enable the realization of 1D charge density wave (CDW) phases in an isolated single TMM wire. Moreover, we revealed the appealing regulation of 1D CDW orders by van der Waals interactions at either the 1D-2D interface (i.e., rotation of a single wire along its wire axis) or the 1D-1D interface. Two rotation angles (30° and 0°) give rise to 3 × 1 and zigzag chain CDW morphologies, respectively, which exhibit pronounced differences in atomic displacement by a factor of 2. The interwire vdW coupling overwhelms its counterpart at the 1D-2D interface, thus locking the rotation angle (at 0°) as well as the interwire atomic registries. In contrast, interestingly, the phases of the charge oscillations are independent of the adjacent wires. The ability to tailor 1D charge orders provides a crucial addition to the toll set of vdW integrations beyond two-dimensional materials.

Mesoporous Iron Family Element (Fe, Co, Ni) Molybdenum Disulfide/Carbon Nanohybrids for High-Performance Supercapacitors

As the demand for fuel continues to increase, the development of energy devices with excellent performance is crucial. Supercapacitors (SCs) are attracting attention for their advantages of high specific energy and a long cycle life. At present, the development of high-performance electrode materials is the main point for research and development of SCs. Transition metal sulfides have the advantages of a large interlayer space and high theoretical capacity, making them promising electrode materials. Herein, we reported a series of ultrathin mesoporous iron family element (Fe, Co, Ni) molybdenum disulfide (MxMo1-xS2/C, M = Fe, Co, and Ni) by a template method. The original monolayer mesoporous structure of MoS2/C was maintained, and accumulation and agglomeration of MoS2/C were avoided. Based on our investigations, the best performance was that of CoxMo1-xS2/C nanohybrids. Furthermore, the concentrations of Co and Mo ions were modulated to obtain the best performance, in which Mo and Co ions were released at 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 ratios and they were named CoxMo1-xS2/C-1, CoxMo1-xS2/C-2, and CoxMo1-xS2/C-3, respectively. Overall, these materials represent a significant improvement and show promise as high-performance SC electrode materials due to their enhanced capacitance and stability. At a current density of 0.5 A g-1, CoxMo1-xS2/C-2 has the optimal specific capacitance of 184 F g-1. CoxMo1-xS2/C-2 as an SC electrode exhibited better reversible capacity and cycling stability than MoS2/C, which is an improvement over MoS2/C regarding reversible capacity and cycling stability.

Growth of self-integrated atomic quantum wires and junctions of a Mott semiconductor

Continued advances in quantum technologies rely on producing nanometer-scale wires. Although several state-of-the-art nanolithographic technologies and bottom-up synthesis processes have been used to engineer these wires, critical challenges remain in growing uniform atomic-scale crystalline wires and constructing their network structures. Here, we discover a simple method to fabricate atomic-scale wires with various arrangements, including stripes, X-junctions, Y-junctions, and nanorings. Single-crystalline atomic-scale wires of a Mott insulator, whose bandgap is comparable to those of wide-gap semiconductors, are spontaneously grown on graphite substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. These wires are one unit cell thick and have an exact width of two and four unit cells (1.4 and 2.8 nm) and lengths up to a few micrometers. We show that the nonequilibrium reaction-diffusion processes may play an essential role in atomic pattern formation. Our findings offer a previously unknown perspective on the nonequilibrium self-organization phenomena on an atomic scale, paving a unique way for the quantum architecture of nano-network.

Layer-Structured Anisotropic Metal Chalcogenides: Recent Advances in Synthesis, Modulation, and Applications

The unique electronic and catalytic properties emerging from low symmetry anisotropic (1D and 2D) metal chalcogenides (MCs) have generated tremendous interest for use in next generation electronics, optoelectronics, electrochemical energy storage devices, and chemical sensing devices. Despite many proof-of-concept demonstrations so far, the full potential of anisotropic chalcogenides has yet to be investigated. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the recent progress made in the synthesis, mechanistic understanding, property modulation strategies, and applications of the anisotropic chalcogenides. It begins with an introduction to the basic crystal structures, and then the unique physical and chemical properties of 1D and 2D MCs. Controlled synthetic routes for anisotropic MC crystals are summarized with example advances in the solution-phase synthesis, vapor-phase synthesis, and exfoliation. Several important approaches to modulate dimensions, phases, compositions, defects, and heterostructures of anisotropic MCs are discussed. Recent significant advances in applications are highlighted for electronics, optoelectronic devices, catalysts, batteries, supercapacitors, sensing platforms, and thermoelectric devices. The article ends with prospects for future opportunities and challenges to be addressed in the academic research and practical engineering of anisotropic MCs.

One-dimensional metal thiophosphate nanowires by cluster assembly

One-dimensional (1D) atomic wires with precise structures are not only excellent platforms for exploring novel 1D physics, but also promising building blocks to assemble functional materials and devices. However, stable atomic wires remain limited and are hard to search using global optimization algorithms. Inspired by the emerging layered ternary chalcogenides, here we offer a design strategy for rational assembly of metal thiophosphate (MPS₄) nanowires based on the concept of a superatom. ortho-Thiophosphate [PS₄] clusters are linked by proper main-group and transition metal atoms to form closed electronic shells, endowing the assembled nanowires with high dynamic and thermal stabilities. Diverse and exotic electronic band structures are hosted by these ternary MPS₄ nanowires, such as the coexistence of a spin-orbit Dirac point protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry and a flat band near the Fermi level, with nanowires being bipolar magnetic semiconductors for electrical control of spin orientation. These 1D Lego blocks can be further built into higher-order architectures via vdW interaction or covalent bonding. This assembly approach generally produces stable atomic wires with designated compositions and structure symmetries to induce peculiar quantum states for future applications.

Transition metal dichalcogenide magnetic atomic chains

Reducing the dimensions of a material to the atomic scale endows them with novel properties that are significantly different from their bulk counterparts. A family of stoichiometric transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MX₂ (M = Ti to Mn, and X = S to Te) atomic chains is proposed. The results reveal that the MX₂ atomic chains, the smallest possible nanostructure of a TMD, are lattice-dynamically stable, as confirmed from their phonon spectra and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. In contrast to their bulk and two-dimensional (2D) counterparts, the TiX₂ atomic chains are nonmagnetic semiconductors, while the VX₂, CrX₂, and MnX₂ chains are unipolar magnetic, bipolar magnetic, and antiferromagnetic semiconductors, respectively. In addition, the VX₂, CrX₂, and MnX₂ chains can be converted via carrier doping from magnetic semiconductors to half metals with reversible spin-polarization orientation at the Fermi level. Of these chains, the MnX₂ chains exhibit either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic half metallicity depending on the injected carrier type and concentration. The diverse and tunable electronic and magnetic properties in the MX₂ chains originate, based on crystal field theory, from the occupation of the metal d orbitals and the exchange interaction between the tetrahedrally coordinated metal atoms in the atomic chain. The calculated interaction between the carbon nanotubes and the MX₂ chains implies that armchair (7,7) or armchair (8,8) carbon nanotubes are appropriate sheaths for growing MX₂ atomic single-chains in a confined channel. This study reveals the diverse magnetic properties of MX₂ atomic single-chains and provides a promising building block for nanoscale electronic and spintronic devices.

One-Dimensional Atomic Chains for Ultimate-Scaled Electronics

The continuous downscaling of semiconducting channels in transistors has driven the development of modern electronics. However, with the component transistors becoming smaller and denser on a single chip, the continued downscaling progress has touched the physical limits. In this Perspective, we suggest that the emerging one-dimensional (1D) material system involving inorganic atomic chains (ACs) that are packed by van der Waals (vdW) interactions may tackle this issue. Stemming from their 1D crystal structures and naturally terminated surfaces, 1D ACs could potentially shrink transistors to atomic-scale diameters. Also, we argue that 1D ACs with few-atom widths allow us to revisit 1D materials and uncover physical properties distinct from conventional materials. These ultrathin 1D AC materials demand substantive attention. They may bring opportunities to develop ultimate-scaled AC-based electronic, optoelectronic, thermoelectric, spintronic, memory devices, etc.
