ESI-MS Identification of the Cationic Phosphine-Ligated Gold Clusters Au1-22: Insight into the Gold-Ligand Ratio and Abundance of Larger Clusters

Adsorbed Carbon Monoxide-Enabled Self-Terminated Au-Grafting on Pt6 Nanoclusters for Enhanced Methanol Electrooxidation

The study presents the first example of an adsorbed carbon monoxide (CO) enabled self-terminated Au-grafting on triphenylphosphine (PPh3) stabilized Pt6 nanoclusters (NCs) (Pt6 (PPh3)4Cl5 NCs or Pt6 NCs). Adsorbed PPh3 ligands weaken the Pt-CO bond enabling the self-terminated Au-grafting on Pt6 NCs. The Au-grafted Pt6 NCs exhibit enhanced methanol electrooxidation (MOR) in acidic solutions. The surface is composed of a PtAu ensemble exhibiting enhanced MOR and CO tolerance due to the synergistic interaction of Pt with Au and PPh3. The hydrogen underpotential deposition (H-UPD) signal from a CO-covered surface reveals the existence of free-Pt sites on the PtAu ensemble causing higher MOR reactivity. The Au and PPh3 ensure electrocatalytic activity of the NCs, depriving of them at anodic potentials results in "a death-valley" trend.

Assignment of individual structures from intermetalloid nickel gallium cluster ensembles

Poorly selective mixed-metal cluster synthesis and separation yield reaction solutions of inseparable intermetalloid cluster mixtures, which are often discarded. High-resolution mass spectrometry, however, can provide precise compositional data of such product mixtures. Structure assignments can be achieved by advanced computational screening and consideration of the complete structural space. Here, we experimentally verify structure and composition of a whole cluster ensemble by combining a set of spectroscopic techniques. Our study case are the very similar nickel/gallium clusters of M12, M13 and M14 core composition Ni6+xGa6+y (x + y ≤ 2). The rationalization of structure, bonding and reactivity is built upon the organometallic superatom cluster [Ni6Ga6](Cp*)6 = [Ga6](NiCp*)6 (1; Cp* = C5Me5). The structural conclusions are validated by reactivity tests using carbon monoxide, which selectively binds to Ni sites, whereas (triisopropylsilyl)acetylene selectively binds to Ga sites.

Characterization of the Effects of Ligands on Bonding and σ-Aromaticity of Small Pt Nanoclusters

Nanoclusters, particularly gold nanoclusters, have attracted the attention of researchers due to their potential applications in the medicine and energy fields. Other noble-metal nanoclusters, including Pt, have also been studied, but in lesser detail. Pt is known for its excellent catalytic properties and is a promising candidate for applications in catalysis and biomedicine. In this study, we used density functional theory to elucidate the molecular and electronic structures of small phosphine-ligated Pt nanoclusters. This study is directed at identifying highly stable platinum clusters. Our results show that phosphine-ligated platinum nanoclusters with σ-aromaticity have high stability. In addition, we were able to predict the most stable clusters using an electron counting equation.

Exploration of the Atomic Pathway of Seed-Mediated Growth from Icosahedral [Au25(SR)18]- to Bi-Icosahedral Au38(SR)24 and Au44(SR)26 Clusters Based on the 2e- Hopping Mechanism

Size growth is ubiquitous in the gold nanocluster synthesis. However, the atomic-level mechanism of seed-mediated growth of gold clusters remains mysterious. In this study, the seed-mediated growth pathway from the icosahedral [Au₂₅(SR)₁₈]^- cluster to the bi-icosahedral Au₃₈(SR)₂₄ and Au₄₄(SR)₂₆ clusters is studied based on the two-electron (2e^-) hopping mechanism. First, atomic structures of three key intermediate clusters, [Au₂₉(SR)₂₀]^-, [Au₃₃(SR)₂₂]^-, and Au₄₁(SR)₂₅, are predicted based on the 2e^--unit decomposition strategy. The theoretically simulated UV-Vis spectra based on the predicted structure model of [Au₂₉(SR)₂₀]^- and [Au₃₃(SR)₂₂]^- matched well with the experimental curves reported previously. Based on the predicted intermediate cluster structures, the size growth pathway from the eight-electron (8e^-) [Au₂₅(SR)₁₈]^- cluster to 14-electron (14e^-) Au₃₈(SR)₂₄ and 18-electron (18e^-) Au₄₄(SR)₂₆ clusters is determined. In the step of formation of bi-icosahedral Au₃₈(SR)₂₄ from icosahedral [Au₂₅(SR)₁₈]^-, two Au₄ units are first formed. The third 2e^- hopping step results in formation of an icosahedron unit. The present studies offered new insights into the formation and size conversion mechanism of ligand-protected gold nanoclusters containing icosahedral cores.

Poly-Hydride [AuI 7 (PPh3 )7 H5 ](SbF6 )2 cluster complex: Structure, Transformation, and Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Properties

Hydride Au^I bonds are labile due to the mismatch in electric potential of an oxidizing metal and reducing ligand, and therefore the structure and structure-activity relationships of nanoclusters that contain them are seldom studied. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of [Au₇ (PPh₃ )₇ H₅ ](SbF₆ )₂ (abbrev. Au₇ H₅ ²⁺ ), an Au cluster complex containing five hydride ligands, which decomposed to give [Au₈ (PPh₃ )₇ ]²⁺ (abbrev. Au₈ ²⁺ ) upon exposure to light (300 to 450 nm). The valence state of Au^I and H^- was verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, NMR, UV/Vis and XPS. The two nanoclusters behaved differently in the electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR): Au₇ H₅ ²⁺ exhibited 98.2 % selectivity for H₂ , whereas Au₈ ²⁺ was selective for CO (73.5 %). Further DFT calculations showed that the H^- ligand inhibited the CO₂ RR process compared with the electron-donor H.

Synthesis and Stability of Mixed-Diphosphine Ligated Gold Clusters

Sub-nanometer gold clusters are promising size- and composition-tunable materials that may be used for advanced technological applications such as catalysis, energy generation, and microelectronics. Synthesis and characterization of phosphine ligated gold clusters containing different ligands provide insight into how steric and electronic effects resulting from changes in chemical functionality influence cluster size, stability, and formation in solution. Herein, we demonstrate that synthesizing gold clusters using two different diphosphines in solution at the same time results in a broad distribution of novel mixed-ligand clusters. In comparison, adding a second diphosphine to a solution of gold clusters presynthesized with another diphosphine does not result in extensive formation of mixed-ligand species. Utilizing high-mass resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, we determined novel cluster compositions and observed size-dependent trends in gold clusters that undergo ligand exchange forming mixed diphosphine species. Adjacent peaks in the mass spectra, separated by characteristic mass-to-charge ratios, provide evidence for multiple 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (L³) and 1,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)pentane (L⁵) ligands on cationic clusters containing 8, 10, 11, and 22 gold atoms. Energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation experiments provide qualitative insight into how different diphosphine ligands affect the relative stability of specific size gold clusters. Our results indicate that mixed-ligand clusters containing both L³ and L⁵ are generally more stable than their single ligand counterparts containing either L³ or L⁵. These molecular-level insights will facilitate the rational and scalable synthesis of gold clusters for targeted applications.

Gas-phase fragmentation of single heteroatom-incorporated Co5MS8(PEt3)6+ (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) nanoclusters

Functionalization of metal-chalcogenide clusters by either replacing core atoms or by tuning the ligand is a powerful technique to tailor their properties. Central to this approach is understanding the competition between the strength of the metal-ligand and metal-metal interactions. Here, using collision-induced dissociation of atomically precise metal sulfide nanoclusters, Co₅MS₈L₆⁺ (L = PEt₃, M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and Co_5-xFe_xS₈L₆⁺ (x = 1-3), we study the effect of a heteroatom incorporation on the core-ligand interactions and relative stability towards fragmentation. Sequential ligand loss is the dominant dissociation pathway that competes with ligand sulfide (LS) loss. Because the ligands are attached to metal atoms, LS loss is an unusual dissociation pathway, indicating significant rearrangement of the core prior to fragmentation. Both experiments and theoretical calculations indicate the reduced stability of Co₅MnS₈L₆⁺ and Co₅FeS₈L₆⁺ towards the first ligand loss in comparison with their Co₆S₈L₆⁺ and Co₅NiS₈L₆⁺ counterparts and provide insights into the core-ligand interaction.

A Review of State of the Art in Phosphine Ligated Gold Clusters and Application in Catalysis

Atomically precise gold clusters are highly desirable due to their well-defined structure which allows the study of structure-property relationships. In addition, they have potential in technological applications such as nanoscale catalysis. The structural, chemical, electronic, and optical properties of ligated gold clusters are strongly defined by the metal-ligand interaction and type of ligands. This critical feature renders gold-phosphine clusters unique and distinct from other ligand-protected gold clusters. The use of multidentate phosphines enables preparation of varying core sizes and exotic structures beyond regular polyhedrons. Weak gold-phosphorous (Au-P) bonding is advantageous for ligand exchange and removal for specific applications, such as catalysis, without agglomeration. The aim of this review is to provide a unified view of gold-phosphine clusters and to present an in-depth discussion on recent advances and key developments for these clusters. This review features the unique chemistry, structural, electronic, and optical properties of gold-phosphine clusters. Advanced characterization techniques, including synchrotron-based spectroscopy, have unraveled substantial effects of Au-P interaction on the composition-, structure-, and size-dependent properties. State-of-the-art theoretical calculations that reveal insights into experimental findings are also discussed. Finally, a discussion of the application of gold-phosphine clusters in catalysis is presented.

The synthesis and characterization of a new diphosphine-protected gold hydride nanocluster

Gold is the most inert metal and does not form a bulk hydride. However, gold becomes chemically active in the nanometer scale and gold nanoparticles have been found to exhibit important catalytic properties. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a highly stable ligand-protected gold hydride nanocluster, [Au₂₂H₃(dppee)₇]³⁺ [dppee = bis(2-diphenylphosphino) ethyl ether]. A synthetic method is developed to obtain high purity samples of the gold trihydride nanocluster with good yields. The properties of the new hydride cluster are characterized with different experimental techniques, as well as theoretical calculations. Solid samples of [Au₂₂H₃(dppee)₇]³⁺ are found to be stable under ambient conditions. Both experimental evidence and theoretical evidence suggest that the Au₂₂H₃ core of the [Au₂₂H₃(dppee)₇]³⁺ hydride nanocluster consists of two Au₁₁ units bonded via two triangular faces, creating six uncoordinated Au sites at the interface. The three H atoms bridge the six uncoordinated Au atoms at the interface. The Au₁₁ unit behaves as an eight-electron trivalent superatom, forming a superatom triple bond (Au₁₁ ≡ Au₁₁) in the [Au₂₂H₃(dppee)₇]³⁺ trihydride nanocluster assisted by the three bridging H atoms.

Ion Mobility Spectrometry Characterization of the Intermediate Hydrogen-Containing Gold Cluster Au7(PPh3)7H52

We employ ion mobility spectrometry and density functional theory to determine the structure of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ (PPh₃ = triphenylphosphine), which was recently identified by high mass resolution mass spectrometry. Experimental ion-neutral collision cross sections represent the momentum transfer between the ionic clusters and gas molecules averaged over the relative thermal velocities of the colliding pair, thereby providing structural insights. Theoretical calculations indicate the geometry of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ is similar to Au₇(PPh₃)₇⁺, with three hydrogen atoms bridging two gold atoms and two hydrogen atoms forming single Au-H bonds. Collision-induced dissociation products observed during IMS experiments reveal that smaller hydrogen-containing clusters may be produced through fragmentation of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺. Our findings indicate that hydrogen-containing species like Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ act as intermediates in the formation of larger phosphine ligated gold clusters. These results advance the understanding and ability to control the mechanisms of size-selective cluster formation, which is necessary for scalable synthesis of clusters with tailored properties.
