Effects of nitrate supply site on selenite uptake by rice roots

Identification of the spatial patterns and controlling factors of Se in soil and rice in Guangxi through hot spot analysis

Selenium (Se) is essential to human health, anti-cancer, possessing antioxidant, and antiviral properties. In this study, the spatial patterns of rice Se and their varying relationship with soil Se on a regional scale were studied using hot spot analysis for the agricultural soils in Guangxi. According to the hot and cold spot maps, rice Se correlates positively with soil Se in Guangxi agricultural soils. High rice Se accompanies high soil Se in the central part of Guangxi (e.g., Liuzhou, Laibin), and low rice Se is in line with low soil Se in the western part (e.g., Baise). However, the hot spot analysis maps indicate that southwestern Guangxi exhibits a special characteristic of low rice Se with high soil Se (e.g., Chongzuo). This special pattern is strongly associated with the high concentrations of Fe₂O₃ (ferromanganese nodules) in the carbonate rock area. The hot spot analysis proves useful in revealing the spatial patterns of rice Se in Guangxi and identifying the hidden patterns.

Selenium species transforming along soil-plant continuum and their beneficial roles for horticultural crops

Selenium (Se) acquirement from daily diet can help reduce the risk of many diseases. The edible parts of crop plants are the main source of dietary Se, while the Se content in crops is determined by Se bioavailability in soil. We summarize recent research on the biogeochemical cycle of Se driven by specific microorganisms and emphasize the oxidizing process in the Se cycle. Moreover, we discuss how plant root exudates and rhizosphere microorganisms affect soil Se availability. Finally, we cover beneficial microorganisms, including endophytes, that promote crop quality and improve crop tolerance to environmental stresses. Se availability to plants depends on the balance between adsorption and desorption, reduction, methylation and oxidation, which are determined by interactions among soil properties, microbial communities and plants. Reduction and methylation processes governed by bacteria or fungi lead to declined Se availability, while Se oxidation regulated by Se-oxidizing microorganisms increases Se availability to plants. Despite a much lower rate of Se oxidization compared to reduction and methylation, the potential roles of microbial communities in increasing Se bioavailability are probably largely underestimated. Enhancing Se oxidation and Se desorption are crucial for the promotion of Se bioavailability and uptake, particularly in Se-deficient soils. Beneficial roles of Se are reported in terms of improved crop growth and quality, and enhanced protection against fungal diseases and abiotic stress through improved photosynthetic traits, increased sugar and amino acid contents, and promoted defense systems. Understanding Se transformation along the plant-soil continuum is crucial for agricultural production and even for human health.

Enrichment characteristics and dietary evaluation of selenium in navel orange fruit from the largest navel orange-producing area in China (southern Jiangxi)

Diet is the main intake source of selenium (Se) in the body. Southern Jiangxi is the largest navel orange-producing area in China, and 25.98% of its arable land is Se-rich. However, studies on the Se-rich characteristics and Se dietary evaluation of navel orange fruits in the natural environment of southern Jiangxi have not been reported. This study was large-scale and in situ samplings (n = 492) of navel oranges in southern Jiangxi with the goal of investigating the coupling relationships among Se, nutritional elements, and quality indicators in fruits and systematically evaluating Se dietary nutrition to the body. The results indicated that the average content of total Se in the flesh was 4.92 μg⋅kg^-1, and the percentage of Se-rich navel oranges (total Se ≥ 10 μg⋅kg^-1 in the flesh) was 7.93%, of which 66.74% of the total Se was distributed in the pericarp and 33.26% in the flesh. The average content of total Se in the flesh of Yudu County was the highest at 5.71 μg⋅kg^-1. There was a significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) between Se, Cu, and Zn in the Se-rich flesh. According to the Se content in the flesh, the Se dietary nutrition evaluation was carried out, and it was found that the Se-enriched navel orange provided a stronger Se nutritional potential for the human body. These findings will help to identify Se enrichment in navel orange fruit in China's largest navel orange-producing area and guide the selection of Se-rich soils for navel orange production in the future.

A Novel In Situ Method for Simultaneously and Selectively Measuring AsIII, SbIII, and SeIV in Freshwater and Soils

Anthropogenic and climatic perturbations redistribute arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), and selenium (Se) within the environment. The speciation characteristics of these elements determine their behavior and biogeochemical cycling, but these redox-sensitive species are challenging to capture, with few methods able to harmonize measurements across the whole plant-soil-ecosystem continuum. In this study, we developed a novel diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) method based on aminopropyl and mercaptopropyl bi-functionalized mesoporous silica spheres (AMBS) to achieve in-situ, simultaneous, and selective quantification of As^III, Sb^III, and Se^IV, three typical/toxic but difficult to measure inorganic species. When used for environmental monitoring within a river catchment, AMBS-DGT exhibited stable/accurate predictions of these species despite varying water chemistries (ionic strength 0.01-200 mmol L^-1 NO₃^-, pH 5-9 for As^III and Sb^III, and pH 5-7.5 for Se^IV). Furthermore, river deployments also showed that time-averaged species concentrations by AMBS-DGT were reproducible compared with high-frequency sampling and measurement by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. When AMBS-DGT was used for sub-mm scale chemical imaging of soil solute fluxes, the method resolved concomitant redox-constrained spatial patterns of As^III, Sb^III, and Se^IV associated with root O₂ penetration within anaerobic soil. Improved capabilities for measurement of compartment interfaces and microniche features are critical alongside the measurement of larger-scale hydrological processes that dictate the fine-scale effects, with the AMBS-DGT achieving this for As^III, Sb^III, and Se^IV.

Selenium Biofortification and Interaction With Other Elements in Plants: A Review

Selenium (Se) is an essential element for humans and animals and its deficiency in the diet is a global problem. Crop plants are the main source of Se for consumers. Therefore, there is much interest in understanding the factors that govern the accumulation and distribution of Se in the tissues of crop plants and the mechanisms of interaction of Se absorption and accumulation with other elements, especially with a view toward optimizing Se biofortification. An ideal crop for human consumption is rich in essential nutrient elements such as Se, while showing reduced accumulation of toxic elements in its edible parts. This review focuses on (a) summarizing the nutritional functions of Se and the current understanding of Se uptake by plant roots, translocation of Se from roots to shoots, and accumulation of Se in grains; and (b) discussing the influence of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) on the biofortification of Se. In addition, we discuss interactions of Se with major toxicant metals (Hg, As, and Cd) frequently present in soil. We highlight key challenges in the quest to improve Se biofortification, with a focus on both agronomic practice and human health.

Moderate water stress in rice induces rhizosheath formation associated with abscisic acid and auxin responses

The rhizosheath is known to be beneficial for drought resistance in many plants, but the regulation of rhizosheath formation in rice plants is unclear. Here, we investigate rhizosheath formation in different rice varieties and root hair mutants. Our results showed that moderate water stress in rice induced rhizosheath formation. The soil porosity and water content were higher in the rice rhizosheath than in the rice bulk soil under moderate water stress. Additionally, rhizosheath formation in short root hair mutants was lower than in wild-type rice under moderate water stress. Moreover, transcriptomic results indicated that abscisic acid (ABA) and auxin were involved in root and root hair responses in rhizosheath formation. Further, blocking ABA and auxin pathways in wild type and in rhl1-1, the shortest root hair mutant, rhizosheath formation and root hair length were significantly decreased under moderate water stress. However, wild type plants maintained a higher root ABA content, root basipetal auxin transport, root hair length, and amount of rhizosheath than did rhl1-1. Our results suggest that moderate water stress in rice induces rhizosheath formation by modulating the ABA and auxin responses to regulate root and root hair growth, which may be used to breed rice varieties resistant to drought.

Abscisic acid accumulation modulates auxin transport in the root tip to enhance proton secretion for maintaining root growth under moderate water stress

Maintenance of root growth is essential for plant adaptation to soil drying. Here, we tested the hypothesis that auxin transport is involved in mediating ABA's modulation by activating proton secretion in the root tip to maintain root growth under moderate water stress. Rice and Arabidopsis plants were raised under a hydroponic system and subjected to moderate water stress (-0.47 MPa) with polyethylene glycol (PEG). ABA accumulation, auxin transport and plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase activity at the root tip were monitored in addition to the primary root elongation and root hair density. We found that moderate water stress increases ABA accumulation and auxin transport in the root apex. Additionally, ABA modulation is involved in the regulation of auxin transport in the root tip. The transported auxin activates the plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase to release more protons along the root tip in its adaption to moderate water stress. The proton secretion in the root tip is essential in maintaining or promoting primary root elongation and root hair development under moderate water stress. These results suggest that ABA accumulation modulates auxin transport in the root tip, which enhances proton secretion for maintaining root growth under moderate water stress.
