A review on arsenic in the environment: contamination, mobility, sources, and exposure

Arsenic is one of the regulated hazard materials in the environment and a persistent pollutant creating environmental, agricultural and health issues and posing a serious risk to humans. In the present review, sources and mobility of As in various compartments of the environment (air, water, soil and sediment) around the World are comprehensively investigated, along with measures of health hazards. Multiple atomic spectrometric approaches have been applied for total and speciation analysis of As chemical species. The LoD values are basically under 1 μg L-1, which is sufficient for the analysis of As or its chemical species in environmental samples. Both natural and anthropogenic sources contributed to As in air, while fine particulate matter tends to have higher concentrations of arsenic and results in high concentrations of As up to a maximum of 1660 ng m-3 in urban areas. Sources for As in natural waters (as dissolved or in particulate form) can be attributed to natural deposits, agricultural and industrial effluents, for which the maximum concentration of 2000 μg L-1 was found in groundwater. Sources for As in soil can be the initial contents, fossil fuel burning products, industrial effluents, pesticides, and so on, with a maximum reported concentration up to 4600 mg kg-1. Sources for As in sediments can be attributed to their reservoirs, with a maximum reported concentration up to 2500 mg kg-1. It is notable that some reported concentrations of As in the environment are several times higher than permissible limits. However, many aspects of arsenic environmental chemistry including contamination of the environment, quantification, mobility, removal and health hazards are still unclear.

Surface modified iron magnetic nanoparticles assisted Fenton digestion and extraction method for cadmium determination

This study presents a Fenton digestion method for milk samples based on UV irradiation for cadmium determination using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The method was developed as an alternative to microwave digesters, using very basic apparatus and easy to acquire chemicals. Fenton digestion process was performed by the help of citric acid coated magnetic nanoparticles. Optimum conditions of the digestion process were applied to milk samples to evaluate analytical performance of the method. Limit of detection and limit of quantification values calculated for cadmium in milk were 0.53 and 1.8 mg/L, respectively. The method was applied to three different milk samples to validate the method's suitability and accuracy. Percent recovery values calculated for the samples spiked at two different concentrations ranged between 86 and 111%. Due to differences in the content of the spiked and control/standard milk samples, exact matrix matching calibration strategy using the same brand of milk sample in the preparation of calibration standard was employed and the accuracy of cadmium quantification was greatly enhanced (≈100%).

A Review on Metal- and Metal Oxide-Based Nanozymes: Properties, Mechanisms, and Applications

Since the ferromagnetic (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were firstly reported to exert enzyme-like activity in 2007, extensive research progress in nanozymes has been made with deep investigation of diverse nanozymes and rapid development of related nanotechnologies. As promising alternatives for natural enzymes, nanozymes have broadened the way toward clinical medicine, food safety, environmental monitoring, and chemical production. The past decade has witnessed the rapid development of metal- and metal oxide-based nanozymes owing to their remarkable physicochemical properties in parallel with low cost, high stability, and easy storage. It is widely known that the deep study of catalytic activities and mechanism sheds significant influence on the applications of nanozymes. This review digs into the characteristics and intrinsic properties of metal- and metal oxide-based nanozymes, especially emphasizing their catalytic mechanism and recent applications in biological analysis, relieving inflammation, antibacterial, and cancer therapy. We also conclude the present challenges and provide insights into the future research of nanozymes constituted of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials.

MnFe2O4 micromotors enhanced field digestion and solid phase extraction for on-site determination of arsenic in rice and water

Despite the increased interest and great progress obtained on arsenic test, it is still a challenge to accomplish the on-site determination of arsenic in rice due to the expensive instrumentation and harsh digestion process. In this work, MnFe₂O₄ micromotors were found to retain high catalytic activity to simultaneously produce large amounts of hydroxyl radicals and O₂ bubbles in the presence of H₂O₂. Interestingly, the generated bubbles autonomously propel the micromotors and prevent them from depositing, thus keeping their high catalytic activity. As a result, a MnFe₂O₄ micromotors enhanced digestion method was developed for the field digestion of rice samples within 100 min only using H₂O₂, which was further utilized to realize the on-site detection of arsenic in rice by coupling with the Gutzeit method followed headspace solid phase extraction. A quantification limit of 40 μg kg^-1 was obtained for the determination of arsenic in rice. Owing to their capabilities of the efficient and rapid adsorption of arsenic and continuous movement, a MnFe₂O₄ micromotors enhanced solid phase extraction was also established for the sensitive determination of arsenic in water with a 1 μg L^-1 of quantification limit. The accuracy of the developed method was validated via analysis of a Certified Reference Material of rice (GBW10043) and a series of rice and water samples with satisfactory results, showing promising potential in the sensitive on-site detection of arsenic in rice and water samples.

Point discharge microplasma reactor for high efficiency conversion of H2S to SO2 for speciation analysis of sulfide and sulfite using molecular fluorescence spectrometry

A low temperature plasma integrating the merits of small size, simple operation and rich active particles has good performance in analytical chemistry. In this work, a point discharge microplasma was used as a reactor to facilitate the gaseous conversion reaction from H₂S to SO₂ with an excellent efficiency as high as 95%. By coupling this reactor with a fluorescence spectrometer, the speciation analysis of sulfide and sulfite was achieved in a simple, chromatographic separation-free, time-saving and practical way. Specifically, with the discharge off, only sulfite was quantified; with discharge on, both sulfide and sulfite were quantified; and with a simple subtraction, the speciation analysis could be easily attained. By the acidification process, a limit of detection of 7.7 μM by the proposed method was obtained for both sulfide and sulfite in aqueous medium, and this method was successfully utilized to analysis of real samples.

Multifunctional nanozymes: enzyme-like catalytic activity combined with magnetism and surface plasmon resonance

Over decades, as alternatives to natural enzymes, highly-stable and low-cost artificial enzymes have been widely explored for various applications. In the field of artificial enzymes, functional nanomaterials with enzyme-like characteristics, termed as nanozymes, are currently attracting immense attention. Significant progress has been made in nanozyme research due to the exquisite control and impressive development of nanomaterials. Since nanozymes are endowed with unique properties from nanomaterials, an interesting investigation is multifunctionality, which opens up new potential applications for biomedical sensing and sustainable chemistry due to the combination of two or more distinct functions of high-performance nanozymes. To highlight the progress, in this review, we discuss two representative types of multifunctional nanozymes, including iron oxide nanomaterials with magnetic properties and metal nanomaterials with surface plasmon resonance. The applications are also covered to show the great promise of such multifunctional nanozymes. Future challenges and prospects are discussed at the end of this review.

Low-Temperature and Atmospheric Pressure Sample Digestion Using Dielectric Barrier Discharge

A new sample digestion method using a double layer and coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) digestion reactor was developed for the sensitive determination of trace elements in rice samples. All the operation parameters of the DBD microplasma and other digestion conditions were carefully optimized. Three DBD-digestion modes were investigated for real matrix samples, including H₂O-DBD-digestion, H₂O₂-DBD-digestion, and HNO₃-DBD-digestion systems. Among the three modes, the H₂O-DBD-digestion system provides a suitable digestion of sample without any additional chemicals, achieving environmental friendly sample treatment and eliminating the potential interferences. Under the optimized conditions, limits of detection for Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, Cr, Co, and As were in the range of 0.01-0.35 ng g^-1 by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The accuracy of the proposed method was checked by analysis of a certified reference material (GBW10043) and spiked samples with satisfactory results (83-113% recoveries).

Iron Oxide Nanozyme: A Multifunctional Enzyme Mimetic for Biomedical Applications

Iron oxide nanoparticles have been widely used in many important fields due to their excellent nanoscale physical properties, such as magnetism/superparamagnetism. They are usually assumed to be biologically inert in biomedical applications. However, iron oxide nanoparticles were recently found to also possess intrinsic enzyme-like activities, and are now regarded as novel enzyme mimetics. A special term, "Nanozyme", has thus been coined to highlight the intrinsic enzymatic properties of such nanomaterials. Since then, iron oxide nanoparticles have been used as nanozymes to facilitate biomedical applications. In this review, we will introduce the enzymatic features of iron oxide nanozyme (IONzyme), and summarize its novel applications in biomedicine.

UV-assisted Fenton digestion of rice for the determination of trace cadmium by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry

A new, simple and efficient digestion method using UV-assisted Fe⁰ Fenton reaction was developed for the pretreatment of rice samples prior to cadmium analysis by atomic fluorescence spectrometry.
