Molecularly imprinted polymer on magnetic graphene oxide for fast and selective extraction of 17β-estradiol

Onion peels (OP) are byproduct of food processing industries that poses economic and environmental challenges. However, being rich source of bioactive compounds like Quercetin (Qt), a polyphenolic antioxidant with potential health benefits, harnessing value from such waste can imbibe sustainable practices and protect environment. With this view, the present study targets selective recovery of Qt from OP waste using rationally designed molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). Density Functional Theory (DFT) was used for the theoretical selection of the best conformer of Qt (template), methacrylic acid (MAA) as functional monomer, ratio of Qt-MAA for getting stable pre-polymerization complex, and to avoid hit and trial experiments. The theoretical results were validated experimentally by synthesizing MIP/ control polymer (NIP) using MAA as functional monomer, EGDMA as a cross-linker and AIBN as initiator. Synthesized MIP/NIP were characterized using various characterization techniques to confirm successful imprinting. Prepared MIP and NIP could effectively rebind the Qt molecule with binding capacity of 46.67 and 20.89 mg g-1 respectively. Furthermore, synthesized MIP could selectively recover 62.81 % of Qt from 1 g of dry onion peel powder. This study can be effectually used for sustainable recovery of Qt in large scale for various foods, cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.

Preparation of Immobilised 17β-Estradiol-Imprinted Nanoparticles onto Bacterial Cellulose Nanofibres to Use for the Removal of 17β-Estradiol from Wastewater

Estradiol, a phenolic steroid oestrogen, is one of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in natural and tap waters. The detection and removal of EDCs is attracting attention daily as they negatively affect animals' and humans' endocrine functions and physiological conditions. Therefore, developing a fast and practical method for the selective removal of EDCs from waters is essential. In this study, we prepared 17β-estradiol (E2)-imprinted HEMA-based nanoparticles onto bacterial cellulose nanofibres (E2-NP/BC-NFs) to use for the removal of E2 from wastewater. FT-IR and NMR confirmed the structure of the functional monomer. The composite system was characterised by BET, SEM, µCT, contact angle, and swelling tests. Additionally, the non-imprinted bacterial cellulose nanofibres (NIP/BC-NFs) were prepared to compare the results of E2-NP/BC-NFs. Adsorption of E2 from aqueous solutions was performed in batch mode and investigated via several parameters for optimisation conditions. The effect of pH studies was examined in the 4.0-8.0 range using acetate and phosphate buffers and a concentration of E2 of 0.5 mg/mL. The maximum E2 adsorption amount was 254 µg/g phosphate buffer at 45 °C. The experimental data show that the Langmuir is a relevant isotherm model for E2 adsorption. Additionally, the relevant kinetic model was the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. It was observed that the adsorption process reached equilibrium in less than 20 min. The E2 adsorption decreased with the increase in salt at varying salt concentrations. The selectivity studies were performed using cholesterol and stigmasterol as competing steroids. The results show that E2 is 46.0 times more selective than cholesterol and 21.0 times more selective than stigmasterol. According to the results, the relative selectivity coefficients for E2/cholesterol and E2/stigmasterol were 8.38 and 86.6 times greater for E2-NP/BC-NFs than for E2-NP/BC-NFs, respectively. The synthesised composite systems were repeated ten times to assess the reusability of E2-NP/BC-NFs.

Carbon Dots Conjugated Antibody as an Effective FRET-Based Biosensor for Progesterone Hormone Screening

In this work, carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method using citric acid and ethylene diamine, and covalently functionalized with antibodies for the sensing of progesterone hormone. The structural and morphological analysis reveals that the synthesized CDs are of average size (diameter 8-10 nm) and the surface functionalities are confirmed by XPS, XRD and FT-IR. Further graphene oxide (GO) is used as a quencher due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism, whereas the presence of the analyte progesterone turns on the fluorescence because of displacement of GO from the surface of CDs effectively inhibiting FRET efficiency due to the increased distance between donor and acceptor moieties. The linear curve is obtained with different progesterone concentrations with 13.8 nM detection limits (R2 = 0.974). The proposed optical method demonstrated high selectivity performance in the presence of structurally resembling interfering compounds. The PL intensity increased linearly with the increased progesterone concentration range (10-900 nM) under the optimal experimental parameters. The developed level-free immunosensor has emerged as a potential platform for simplified progesterone analysis due to the high selectivity performance and good recovery in different samples of spiked water.

Molecularly imprinted Monolithic column-based SERS sensor for selective detection of cortisol in dog saliva

Molecularly imprinted monolithic column embedded with silver nanoparticles (MIMC@Ag) was synthesized by in-situ polymerization with template and porogen inside capillary tube followed by silver precursor reduction and template/porogen removal for realizing Raman detection of cortisol. Dense silver nanoparticles generated within the monolith makes this kind of column suitable for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection, designated as SERS-MIMC. Scanning electron microscopy and BET profiler confirmed larger pore structure in the column after template removal. The corresponding increased mass transfer/binding rate, selective adsorption and adsorptive mechanism of the MIMC were well studied with a series of adsorption experiments. The minimum Raman detectable concentration of cortisol is 1 × 10^-7 mol L^-1 by using MIMC@Ag with a good linear relationship in the concentration range from 1 × 10^-3 to 1 × 10^-7 mol L^-1. SERS sigmal of cortisol can be clearly distinguished from its analogs (estradiol, cholesterol and dexamethasone), proving the selective recognition of cortisol for SERS detection by MIMC@Ag. This ease-to-prepare SERS-MIMC sensor also shows good stability and reusability. The SERS-MIMC has been successfully applied for the easy, sensitive and selective detection of cortisol in dog saliva.

Antioxidant analysis of ultra-fast selectively recovered 4-hydroxy benzoic acid from fruits and vegetable peel waste using graphene oxide based molecularly imprinted composite

Food processing industries generate 25-30% of fruit and vegetable peel (F&VP) waste of the total produce, which are rich in polyphenolic antioxidants (PA). Sustainable solution for the above waste can be its valorization for the recovery of PA, often used as natural preservative. Present work reports rationally designed graphene oxide-based molecularly imprinted composites (GOMIPs) using ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-octylimidazolium chloride (A) as a green functional monomer for selective recovery of PA 4-Hydroxy benzoic acid (4HA) from F&VP/pomegranate peel (PGP) waste. GOMIP-A and GOMIP-V were characterized using various techniques for its successful synthesis. GOMIP-A attained equilibrium within 10 min with adsorption capacity of 190.56 μmol g-1 for 4HA. Developed HPLC method depicted selective recovery of 77.23% and 62.83% 4HA from F&VP and PGP waste respectively by GOMIP-A. Subsequently, desorbed 4HA from GOMIP-A matrices exhibited the antioxidant potential of 33.53% (F&VP extract) and 47.97% (PGP extract) for DPPH radical.

Synthesis and characterization of genistein magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers and their application in soy sauce products

In this study, a novel method based on genistein magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (Gen-MMIPs) was developed utilizing a surface molecular imprinting technique, in which genistein was used as the template molecule and Fe₃O₄ was used as the carrier. The synthesis of Gen-MMIPs was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which indicated that the diameter of the Gen-MMIPs was approximately 500 nm. Via analysis with a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), the saturation magnetization of Gen-MMIPs was determined to be 24.79 emu g⁻¹. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy showed that polymer groups were on the surface of the magnetic carrier. Adsorption experiments suggested that the genistein adsorption capability of Gen-MMIPs was 5.81 mg g⁻¹, and adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 20 min. Gen-MMIPs as dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) adsorbents combined with HPLC were used to selectively separate genistein in soy sauce samples, and the recoveries ranged from 85.7 to 88.5% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 5%, which proved that this method can be used for the detection of genistein residues in real samples.

Effective Disposal of Methylene Blue and Bactericidal Benefits of Using GO-Doped MnO2 Nanorods Synthesized through One-Pot Synthesis

Graphene oxide (GO)-doped MnO2 nanorods loaded with 2, 4, and 6% GO were synthesized via the chemical precipitation route at room temperature. The aim of this work was to determine the catalytic and bactericidal activities of prepared nanocomposites. Structural, optical, and morphological properties as well as elemental composition of samples were investigated with advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-visible (vis) spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). XRD measurements confirmed the monoclinic structure of MnO2. Vibrational mode and rotational mode of functional groups (O-H, C=C, C-O, and Mn-O) were evaluated using FTIR results. Band gap energy and blueshift in the absorption spectra of MnO2 and GO-doped MnO2 were identified with UV-vis spectroscopy. Emission spectra were attained using PL spectroscopy, whereas elemental composition of prepared materials was recorded with scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-EDS. Moreover, HR-TEM micrographs of doped and undoped MnO2 revealed elongated nanorod-like structure. Efficient degradation of methylene blue enhanced the catalytic activity in the presence of a reducing agent (NaBH4); this was attributed to the implantation of GO on MnO2 nanorods. Furthermore, substantial inhibition areas were measured for Escherichia coli (EC) ranging 2.10-2.85 mm and 2.50-3.15 mm at decreased and increased levels for doped MnO2 nanorods and 3.05-4.25 mm and 4.20-5.15 mm for both attentions against SA, respectively. In silico molecular docking studies suggested the inhibition of FabH and DNA gyrase of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus as a possible mechanism behind the bactericidal activity of MnO2 and MnO2-doped GO nanoparticles (NPs).

Recent Advances in Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE) Based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) for Analysis of Hormones

Steroid hormones are active substances that are necessary in the normal functioning of all physiological activities in the body, such as sexual characteristics, metabolism, and mood control. They are also widely used as exogenous chemicals in medical and pharmaceutical applications as treatments and at times growth promoters in animal farming. The vast application of steroid hormones has resulted in them being found in different matrices, such as food, environmental, and biological samples. The presence of hormones in such matrices means that they can easily come into contact with humans and animals as exogenous compounds, resulting in abnormal concentrations that can lead to endocrine disruption. This makes their determination in different matrices a vital part of pollutant management and control. Although advances in analytical instruments are constant, it has been determined that these instruments still require some sample preparation steps to be able to determine the occurrence of pollutants in the complex matrices in which they occur. Advances are still being made in sample preparation to ensure easier, selective, and sensitive analysis of complex matrices. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been termed as advanced solid-phase (SPE) materials for the selective extraction and preconcentration of hormones in complex matrices. This review explores the preparation and application of MIPs for the determination of steroid hormones in different sample types.

The Current Role of Graphene-Based Nanomaterials in the Sample Preparation Arena

Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov et al., graphene has attracted increasing attention in the scientific community due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, such as thermal/mechanical resistance, electronic stability, high Young's modulus, and fast mobility of charged atoms. In addition, other remarkable characteristics support its use in analytical chemistry, especially as sorbent. For these reasons, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been used as a promising material in sample preparation. Graphene and graphene oxide, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, thermal stability, and delocalized π-electrons, are ideal sorbents, especially for molecules containing aromatic rings. They have been used in several sample preparation techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as well as in miniaturized modes as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in their different configurations. However, the reduced size and weight of graphene sheets can limit their use since they commonly aggregate to each other, causing clogging in high-pressure extractive devices. One way to overcome it and other drawbacks consists of covalently attaching the graphene sheets to support materials (e.g., silica, polymers, and magnetically modified supports). Also, graphene-based materials can be further chemically modified to favor some interactions with specific analytes, resulting in more efficient hybrid sorbents with higher selectivity for specific chemical classes. As a result of this wide variety of graphene-based sorbents, several studies have shown the current potential of applying GBMs in different fields such as food, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. Within such a context, this review will focus on the last five years of achievements in graphene-based materials for sample preparation techniques highlighting their synthesis, chemical structure, and potential application for the extraction of target analytes in different complex matrices.

Preparation, surface functionalization and application of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles

This paper reviews recent developments in the preparation, surface functionalization, and applications of Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles. Especially, it includes preparation methods (such as electrodeposition, polyol methods, etc.), organic materials (such as polymers, small molecules, surfactants, biomolecules, etc.) or inorganic materials (such as silica, metals, and metal oxidation/sulfide, functionalized coating of carbon surface, graphene, etc.) and its applications (such as magnetic separation, protein fixation, magnetic catalyst, environmental treatment, medical research, etc.). In the end, some existing challenges and possible future trends in the field were discussed.

Sample treatment based on molecularly imprinted polymers for the analysis of veterinary drugs in food samples: a review

The use of veterinary drugs in medical treatments and in the livestock industry is a recurrent practice. When applied in subtherapeutic doses over prolonged times, they can also act as growth promoters. However, residues of these substances in foods present a risk to human health. Their analysis is thus important and can help guarantee consumer safety. The critical point in each analytical technique is the sample treatment and the analytical matrix complexity. The present manuscript summarizes the development, type of synthesis, characterization, and application of molecularly imprinted polymers in the separation, identification, and quantification techniques for the determination of veterinary drug residues in food samples in extraction, clean-up, isolation, and pre-concentration systems. Synthesized sorbents with specific recognition properties improve the interactions between the analytes and the polymeric sorbents, providing better analysis conditions and advantages in comparison with commercial sorbents in terms of high selectivity, analytical sensitivity, easy performance, and low cost analysis.

A novel hybrid micro extraction for the sensitive determination of 17β-estradiol in water samples

A novel and green hybrid of pipette tip micro solid-phase extraction (PT-μSPE) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) was tailored and established for efficient and sensitive determination of 17β-estradiol (E2) in water samples. The hybrid design used chitin as a solid phase in PT-μSPE and applies the SLE principle on it for micro extraction. The analytical setup was termed as chitin-supported pipette tip-micro liquid extraction (CPT-μLE). E2 is a highly active environmental endocrine disruptor, widely spread in the water environment, and thus it is relevant to develop a novel and noble method for its monitoring at trace concentrations in water. The detection and quantification of E2 were performed via HPLC-UV. Under the optimal conditions, E2 showed excellent linearity in the lower scale range of 0.02-20 ng mL-1, and the correlation coefficient (R2) value was 0.9958. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) were 0.01 ng mL-1 and 0.008 ng mL-1, respectively, with inter-day and intra-day precision in the range of 3.2-5.1% and 3.6-4.8%, respectively. The method was successfully applied for the sensitive determination of E2 in real water samples. Overall, the method is simple, rapid, technically innovative, cost-effective, highly sensitive, environment friendly, and highly efficient. Furthermore, this method should allow easy expansion to pharmaceutical and biological samples. Finally, this novel hybrid analytical approach proposes a new direction in sample pre-treatment advancements and should act as a reference for other noble analytical advancements in the trace analysis of various emerging contaminants in environmental and biological matrices.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Organic Compounds Based on Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites

Graphene oxide (GO) is a chemical compound with a form similar to graphene that consists of one-atom-thick two-dimensional layers of sp²-bonded carbon. Graphene oxide exhibits high hydrophilicity and dispersibility. Thus, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solutions. Therefore, functionalization with magnetic nanoparticles is performed in order to prepare a magnetic GO nanocomposite that combines the sufficient adsorption capacity of graphene oxide and the convenience of magnetic separation. Moreover, the magnetic material can be further functionalized with different groups to prevent aggregation and extends its potential application. Until today, a plethora of magnetic GO hybrid materials have been synthesized and successfully employed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of organic compounds from environmental, agricultural, biological, and food samples. The developed GO nanocomposites exhibit satisfactory stability in aqueous solutions, as well as sufficient surface area. Thus, they are considered as an alternative to conventional sorbents by enriching the analytical toolbox for the analysis of trace organic compounds.

Assessment of H-β zeolite as an ochratoxin binder for poultry

Most of the cereal-based ingredients used in poultry feed are contaminated with ochratoxin-A (OTA). We have investigated H-β zeolite (HBZ) as a new OTA binder for poultry, along with widely used clay mineral-based product (CM), using in vitro and in vivo methods. In vitro binding experiment was carried out using a biphasic assay, consisting of adsorption at pH 3.2 and desorption at pH 6.8. High adsorption (>98%) with less desorption (<5%) was observed for HBZ, whereas CM showed high binding (>98%) and moderate desorption (48%). In the in vitro experiments with the different simulated gastro-intestinal pH buffers, HBZ did not desorb OTA at any of the pH. Desorption of OTA was observed with CM, as the pH increases. From the in vitro kinetic and chemisorption studies, faster, stronger, and higher adsorption was observed for HBZ. Thermodynamic studies showed positive entropy (22.76 KJ/mol K) for HBZ, signifying predominant hydrophobic interactions towards OTA, whereas CM exhibited negative entropy (-3.67 KJ/mol K). The in vivo binding efficacy of HBZ and CM was tested in 5-wk-old broiler chickens. The study consisted of 4 experimental groups, each with 6 replicates having 2 birds per replicate. The groups were control, negative control (no toxin binder), T1 (HBZ at 1 kg/ton of feed), and T2(CM at 1 kg/ton of feed). Except control, all the replicates received 20 µg of OTA in the feed. Excreta samples of T1, T2, and NC contained 11.57, 7.16, and 2.78 µg of OTA respectively, which was significantly different from each other (P < 0.05). A growth performance trial was conducted in broiler chickens for 35 D. A total of 288 one-day-old birds were randomly segregated to 3 treatment groups, each with 8 replicates of 12 birds each. Treatment groups consisted of control, T1, and T2, treated with no toxin binder, HBZ, and CM at 1 kg/ton of feed, respectively. None of the treatment groups including control, affected BW gain, and feed conversion ratio (P > 0.05).

Three-dimensional hierarchical frameworks based on molybdenum disulfide-graphene oxide-supported magnetic nanoparticles for enrichment fluoroquinolone antibiotics in water

Recently, water pollution caused by antibiotics is rapidly increasing. Thus, developing efficient, fast and sensitive detection methods for environmental antibiotics monitoring are still remaining elusive. Herein, a method for antibiotics analysis including lecofloxacin, pazcofloxacin and gatifloxacin in water by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using molybdenum disulfide-graphene oxide-supported magnetic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄/GO/MoS₂) as the adsorbent of magnetic solid-phase extraction was developed. The as-prepared magnetic Fe₃O₄/GO/MoS₂ nanocomposite exhibited good enrichment capability toward fluoroquinolone antibiotics and the analytes were absorbed within a short time ca. 2 min. The main drive forces of Fe₃O₄/GO/MoS₂ nanocomposite and antibiotics were most likely attributed to hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. A sensitive and effective MSPE-HPLC method was developed with low detection limits (LODs) ranging from 0.25 to 0.50 ng mL^-1. The recoveries obtained from the analysis of water sample were between 85.6% and 106.1% with relative standard deviations (RSDs, n = 5) lower than 9.5%. The developed method has a good potential for the analysis of organic contaminants in water with low cost and high sensitivity. Therefore, this finding is a promising strategy for designing high efficiency and fast antibiotics detection system.

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers for the detection of aminopyralid in milk using dispersive solid-phase extraction

A method for dummy molecular imprinting-magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MI-MDSPE) coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed for the selective determination of aminopyralid in milk. The magnetic material and polymers were combined via a series of modifications in Fe₃O₄. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂–NH₂@MIP, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂–COOH@MIP and two types of aminopyralid-specific magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) were prepared on the surface of magnetic nanoparticles modified with amino and carboxyl groups. The morphology and magnetic properties of the polymer were characterized. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂–NH₂@MIP exhibits not only good dispersibility and magnetic properties, but also an outstanding recognition pattern to the target analyte. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂–NH₂@MIP, with a high specific surface area and fast mass transfer rate, had a higher affinity than Fe₃O₄@SiO₂–COOH@MIP towards aminopyralid. Under the optimized MI-MDSPE conditions, the method had good linearity (R² > 0.9972), excellent recoveries (83.3–90%), and good precision (relative standard deviations (RSDs) < 12.6%). This method has limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of 0.231 and 0.77 μg kg⁻¹, respectively, indicating that these MMIPs can be used to analyse trace levels of aminopyralid in real samples.

An Electrochemical Sensor for Diphenylamine Detection Based on Reduced Graphene Oxide/Fe₃O₄-Molecularly Imprinted Polymer with 1,4-Butanediyl-3,3'-bis-l-vinylimidazolium Dihexafluorophosphate Ionic Liquid as Cross-Linker

In this paper, we report a new composite of reduced graphene oxide/Fe₃O₄-ionic liquid based molecularly imprinted polymer (RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP) fabricated for diphenylamine (DPA) detection. RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP was prepared with RGO/Fe₃O₄ as supporter, ionic liquid 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([VC₄mim][PF₆]) as functional monomer, ionic liquid 1,4-butanediyl-3,3'-bis-l-vinylimidazolium dihexafluorophosphate ([V₂C₄(mim)₂][(PF₆)₂]) as cross-linker, and diphenylamine (DPA) as template molecule. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer were employed to characterize the RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP composite. RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP was then drop-cast onto a glassy carbon electrode to construct an electrochemical sensor for DPA. The differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) peak current response for 20 μM DPA of RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was 3.24 and 1.68 times that of RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-NIP and RGO/Fe₃O₄-EGDMA-MIP modified GCEs, respectively, indicating the advantage of RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP based on ionic liquid (IL) as a cross-linker. The RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP sensor demonstrated good recognition for DPA. Under the optimized conditions, the RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP sensor exhibited a DPA detection limit of 0.05 μM (S/N = 3) with a linear range of 0.1⁻30 μM. Moreover, the new RGO/Fe₃O₄-IL-MIP based sensor detected DPA in real samples with satisfactory results.

Adsorption and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water through the aggregation of graphene oxide

In this study, a simple method was developed for the aggregation of graphene oxide (GO) with the addition of NaCl to concentrate and separate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water samples, and this method was used as a environmentally friendly method for the determination of PAHs. We demonstrate the uniform dispersion of GO sheets in aqueous samples for the fast high-efficiency adsorption of PAHs. Aggregation occurred immediately upon elimination of electrostatic repulsion by adding NaCl to neutralize the excessive negative charges on the surfaces of the GO sheets. The aggregates of GO and PAHs were separated and treated with hexane to form a slurry. The slurry was filtered and subjected to gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis. Based on a 40-mL sample volume, limits of detection of 10–30 ng L-1were obtained for 16 PAHs, with correlation coefficients (R2) exceeding 0.99. The method yielded good recovery, ranging from 80 to 111% and 80 to 107% for real spiked water samples at 100 and 500 ng L-1, respectively. Compared to traditional solid-phase extraction and liquid–liquid extraction methods, this method is free of organic reagents in the pretreatment procedure and uses only 1 mL hexane for sample introduction.

A molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence sensor for ultrasensitive HIV-1 gene detection using EuS nanocrystals as luminophore

Development of simple, sensitive and specific method for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) assays are urgently demand. In this study, we developed a novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) electrochemiluminescence (MIP-ECL) sensor for the highly sensitive and selective HIV-1 gene detection using Europium sulfide nanocrystals (EsNCs) as signal producing compound. Here, the HIV aptamer as the template and o-phenylenediamine as the functional monomer, were electropolymerized directly on the surface of ITO electrode. With the hybridization reaction between the assemblies of EuS NCs functionalized 5-amino-labeled oligonucleotides as capture probes and oligonucleotides as detection target (HIV gene), the ECL signal significantly increased using K₂S₂O₈ as coreactant. Taking advantage of both MIP-ECL assays and the strong electrochemiluminescence emission of EuS NCs, the sensitive and selective HIV gene detection has been achieved in a linear range 3.0 fM to 0.3 nM with a detection limit of 0.3 fM. The present MIP-ECL biosensor showed good specificity for HIV DNA detection compared to non-complementary and two bases mismatched sequences. The proposed ECL biosensor was applied to detect of HIV DNA in real human serum samples and satisfactory results were obtained. Due to high sensitivity and selectivity, excellent reproducibility and stability of the proposed assay, EuS NCs can be used as novel luminophore for development of MIP-ECL sensors for detection of other DNA biomarkers.

Polydopamine-Coated Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers with Fragment Template for Identification of Pulsatilla Saponin Metabolites in Rat Feces with UPLC-Q-TOF-MS

In this work, a modified pretreatment method using magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) was successfully applied to study the metabolites of an important botanical with ultraperformance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). The MMIPs for glucoside-specific adsorption was used to identify metabolites of Pulsatilla chinensis in rat feces. Polymers were prepared by using Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as the supporting matrix, d-glucose as fragment template, and dopamine as the functional monomer and cross-linker. Results showed that MMIPs exhibited excellent extraction performance, large adsorption capacity (5.65 mg/g), fast kinetics (60 min), and magnetic separation. Furthermore, the MMIPs coupled with UPLC-Q-TOF-MS were successfully utilized for the identification of 17 compounds including 15 metabolites from the Pulsatilla saponin metabolic pool. This study provides a reliable protocol for the separation and identification of saponin metabolites in a complex biological sample, including those from herbal medicines.

Newest applications of molecularly imprinted polymers for extraction of contaminants from environmental and food matrices: A review

This paper presents an overview of the recent applications of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to sample preparation. The review is thought to cover analytical procedures for extraction of contaminants (mainly illegal/noxious organic compounds) from food and environmental matrices, with a particular focus on the various pre-concentration/cleanup techniques, that is offline and online solid-phase extraction (SPE), dispersive SPE (d-SPE), magnetic SPE (MSPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), applied before instrumental quantification. The selectivity and extraction efficiency of MIP-based sorbent phases are critically discussed, also in relation to the physical-chemical properties resulting from the synthetic procedures. A variety of molecularly imprinted sorbents is presented, including hybrid composites embedding carbon nanomaterials and ionic liquids. The analytical performance of MIP materials in sample preparation is commented as function of the complexity of the matrix, and it is compared to that exhibited by (commercial) aspecific and/or immunosorbent phases.
