Abstract
The use of biopolymers as an alternative to petroleum-based polymers offers a sustainable solution with benefits such as biodegradability and unique functionalities. In this study, starch/zein bioparticles (BPs) obtained by nanoprecipitation were employed to synthesize acrylic polymer/biopolymer waterborne nanoparticles with excellent film formation capability. These hybrid nanoparticle dispersions were obtained through a semibatch emulsion polymerization using the previously synthesized BPs as seed and variable monomeric formulations composed of butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate. A synergetic effect between acrylic and biopolymer phases was evidenced where the incorporation of BPs had a fundamental role in improving sensitive properties, such as film blocking resistance, while attaining smooth films at room temperature. These excellent film-forming properties of starch/acrylic hybrid latexes without requiring the addition of formulation agents, which depict an important benefit from an environmental viewpoint, demonstrate that they represent a promising alternative for the development of a new generation of eco-friendly binders.

Abstract
Inflammatory diseases present a serious health challenge due to their widespread prevalence and the severe impact on patients' lives. In the quest to alleviate the burden of these diseases, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) has emerged as a pivotal player. As a transcription factor intimately involved in cellular defense against metabolic and oxidative stress, Nrf2's role in modulating the inflammatory responses of immune cells has garnered significant attention. Recent findings suggest that Nrf2's ability to alter the redox status of cells underlies its regulatory effects on immune responses. Our review delves into preclinical and clinical evidence that underscores the complex influence of Nrf2 activators on immune cell phenotypes, particularly in the inflammatory milieu. By offering a detailed analysis of Nrf2's role in different immune cell populations, we cast light on the potential of Nrf2 activators in shaping the immune response towards a more regulated state, mitigating the adverse effects of inflammation through modeling redox status of immune cells. Furthermore, we explore the innovative use of nanoencapsulation techniques that enhance the delivery and efficacy of Nrf2 activators, potentially advancing the treatment strategies for inflammatory ailments. We hope this review will stimulate the development and expansion of Nrf2-targeted treatments that could substantially improve outcomes for patients suffering from a broad range of inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
This work expands the functionality of fish scale gelatin (FSG) as a carrier of hydrophobic bioactive substances. The hydrophobicity of FSG was enhanced to promote its interaction with hydrophobic curcumin and to increase its bioavailability. This results in a remarkable increase in the curcumin loading capacity of acid-hydrolyzed FSG (HFSG) from 1.08 ± 0.08 μg/mg (0 h) to 9.15 ± 0.21 μg/mg (3 h). The amino acid composition indicated that acid hydrolysis effectively increased the ratio of hydrophobic amino acids of FSG. Acid hydrolysis facilitated the transformation of the α-helical conformation into a β-sheet structure. Hydrophobic interactions between HFSG and curcumin were strengthened by moderate acid hydrolysis. A sustained-release profile emerged for the curcumin-loaded HFSG during simulated gastrointestinal digestion, thereby improving the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of curcumin. These findings contribute to the application of acid hydrolysis in modifying FSG for enhanced hydrophobicity and curcumin loading capacity in the food industry.

Abstract
Foods are susceptible to deterioration and sour due to external environmental influences during production and storage. Coating can form a layer of physical barrier on the surface of foods to achieve the purpose of food preservation. Because of its good barrier properties and biocompatibility, prolamin-based film has been valued as a new green and environment-friendly material in the application of food preservation. Single prolamin-based film has weaknesses of poor toughness and stability, and it is necessary to select appropriate modification methods to improve the performance of film according to the application requirements. The practical application effect of film is not only affected by the raw materials and the properties of the film itself, but also affected by the selection of preparation methods and processing techniques of film-forming liquid. In this review, the properties and selection of prolamins, the forming mechanisms and processes of prolamin-based coatings, the coating techniques, and the modifications of prolamin-based coatings were systematically introduced from the perspective of food coating applications. Moreover, the defects and deficiencies in the research and development of prolamin-based coatings were also reviewed in order to provide a reference for the follow-up research on the application of prolamin-based coatings in food preservation.

Abstract
A pH-responsive double-layer film comprising chitosan (CS), zein (Z), curcumin-β-cyclodextrin complex (Cur- β-CD), alizarin (AL) and cinnamaldehyde (CIN) was developed to detect spoilage and prolong the shelf life of pork. The outer Z/AL is the colorimetric responsive and highly protective outer layer, while the CS/Cur- β-CD/CIN is the fluorescence responsive and functional layer. The CS/Cur- β-CD/CIN-Z/AL film demonstrated excellent barrier properties against oxygen (8.48 × 10-13 g (m s Pa)-1) and water (2.42 × 10-11 g (m s Pa)-1) primarily due to the polar interactions in the Z structure and its hydrophobic nature. The addition of AL and Cur provided the CS/Cur- β-CD/CIN-Z/AL film with pH colorimetric and fluorescence response capabilities, respectively. Furthermore, the inclusion of Cur- β-CD, CIN and AL significantly enhanced the film's antioxidant and antibacterial properties, with radical scavenging rates of 79.29 % (DPPH) and 89.84 % (ABTS), as well as antibacterial efficiencies of 96.2 % (S. aureus) and 85.78 % (E. coli). To test the effectiveness of the double-layer film, a freshness monitoring and maintenance experiment was conducted on pork stored at 4 °C for 8 days. Various parameters of pork, including surface color, pH value, total volatile bases nitrogen (TVB-N), total viable counts (TVC), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), hardness and springiness, were measured, along with the color and fluorescence intensity (FL) of the film. The shelf life of the pork was extended by at least 2 days compared to the control group, and the pork was considered inedible if ΔE ≥ 12 or FL intensity ≤ 2160. Overall, this food packaging film shows promise in simultaneously monitoring and maintaining the freshness of pork.

Abstract
The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/TrkB pathway plays a crucial role in neural plasticity and neuronal survival but is often deficient in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD). CF3CN acts as a specific TrkB agonist that displays therapeutic effects in the AD mouse model, but its brain/plasma ratio (B/P ratio) distribution is not satisfactory. To increase its brain exposure, we synthesized several derivatives and employed nanoparticle (NP) formulation to optimize the most potent #2 derivative's in vivo PK profiles. We generated stable #2-loaded zein/lactoferrin composite NPs (#2/zein/LF) using the antisolvent co-precipitation method. In vivo PK studies revealed that nanoencapsulation improved #2's oral bioavailability by approximately 2-fold and significantly enhanced its plasma Cmax and t1/2, but the brain profiles were comparable. Pharmacodynamics showed that #2/zein/LF activates TrkB signaling that phosphorylates asparagine endopeptidase (AEP) T322 and decreases its enzymatic activity, resulting in reduced AEP-cleaved amyloid precursor protein and Tau fragments in the brains of AD mice, correlating with its PK profiles. After 3 months of treatment in 3xTg mice, #2/zein/LF decreased AD pathologies and alleviated cognitive dysfunction. Hence, zein/LF composite nanoencapsulation is a promising drug delivery method for improving the PK profiles of a potential preclinical candidate for treating neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
This work aims at evaluating the fate of microplastics (MPs) along Fenton oxidation. For such goal, realistic MPs (150-250 μm) of five representative polymer types (PET, PE, PVC, PP and EPS) were obtained from commercial plastic products by cryogenic milling. Experiments (7.5 h) were performed under relatively severe operating conditions: T = 80 °C; pH0 = 3; [H2O2]0 = 1000 mgL-1 (15 doses, 1 every 0.5 h); [Fe3+]0 = 10 mgL-1 (5 doses, 1 every 1.5 h). Slight MPs weight losses (∼10%) were achieved after Fenton oxidation regardless the MP nature. Nevertheless, oxidation yield clearly increased with decreasing the particle size given their higher exposed surface area (up to 20% weight loss with 20-50 μm EPS MPs). Clearly, MPs suffered important changes in their surface due to the introduction of oxygenated groups, which made them more acidic and hydrophilic. Furthermore, MPs progressively reduced their size. In fact, they can be completely oxidized to CO2, as demonstrated in the oxidation of PS nanoplastics (140 nm), where 70% mineralization was achieved. The nature of the plastic particles had a relevant impact on its overall oxidation, being more prone to be oxidized those polymers which contain aromatic rings in their structures (EPS and PET) compared to those formed by alkane chains (PE, PP and PVC). In the latter, the presence of substituents also reduced their oxidation potential. Remarkably, possible leachates released along reaction were more quickly oxidized than the MPs/NPs, so it can be assumed that these dissolved compounds would be completely removed once the solid particles are eliminated. Notably, the leachates obtained upon MPs oxidation were more biodegradable than the released from the fresh solids. All this knowledge is crucial for the understanding of MPs oxidation by the Fenton process and opens the door for the design and optimization of this technology either for water treatment or for analytical purposes (MPs isolation).

Abstract
Biopolymers are important due to their exceptional functional and barrier properties and also their non-toxicity and eco-friendly nature for various food, biomedical, and pharmaceutical applications. However, biopolymers usually need reinforcement strategies to address their poor mechanical, thermal, and physical properties as well as processability aspects. Several natural nanoparticles have been proposed as reinforcing agents for biopolymeric food packaging materials. Among them, zein nanoparticles (ZNPs) have attracted a lot of interest, being an environmentally friendly material. The purpose of the present review paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the ZNPs-loaded nanocomposites for food packaging applications, starting from the synthesis, characteristics and properties of ZNPs, to the physicochemical properties of the ZNPs-loaded nanocomposites, in terms of morphology, permeability, solubility, optical features, hydrophobic/hydrophilic behavior, structural characteristics, thermal features, and mechanical attributes. Finally, at the end of this review, some considerations about the safety issues and gastrointestinal fate of ZNPs, as well as the use of ZNPs-based nanocomposites as food packaging, are reported, taking into account that, despite the enormous benefits, nanotechnology also presents some risks associated to the use of nanometric materials.

Abstract
Prolamins are a group of storage proteins (zeins, kafirins, hordeins, secalins, gliadins, glutenins, and avenins) found in the endosperm of cereal grains and characterized by high glutamine and proline content. With the high proportion of nonpolar amino acids (40-80%) and peculiar solubility (alcohol (60-90%), acetic acid, and alkaline solutions), prolamins exhibit tunable self-assembly behaviors. In recent years, research practices of utilizing prolamins as green building materials of functional delivery vehicles to improve the health benefits of bioactive compounds have surged due to their attractive advantages (e.g. sustainability, biocompatibility, fabrication potential, and cost-competitiveness). This article covers the recent advances in self-assembly behaviors leading to the fabrication of nanoparticles, fibers, and films in the bulk water phase, at the air-liquid interface, and under the electrostatic field. Different fabrication methods, including antisolvent precipitation, evaporation induced self-assembly, thermal treatment, pH-modulation, electrospinning, and solvent casting for assembling nanoarchitectures as functional delivery vehicles are highlighted. Emerging industrial applications by mapping patents, including encapsulation and delivery of bioactive compounds and probiotics, active packaging, Pickering emulsions, and as functional additives to develop safer, healthier, and sustainable food products are discussed. A future perspective concerning the fabrication of prolamins as advanced materials to promote their commercial food applications is proposed.

Abstract
Chitosan (C) and zein (Z) were used to develop bilayer films with a characteristic one-way water barrier using a layer-by-layer (LBL) casting method. The effects of mass ratios (C:Z1:1, C:Z1:2, C:Z1:3, C:Z3:1, C:Z2:1) on the microstructure and physicochemical properties of bilayer films were investigated. Bilayer films had uniform microstructures, and C:Z = 1:3 showed a firmer structure as the Z aggregates were distributed in the continuous phase of C. The intermolecular interactions between the C and Z layers were observed using FTIR and XRD analysis. TGA demonstrated that adding Z layer enhanced the thermal stability of C films. LBL coating gave the C/Z bilayer film an increased elongation and tensile strength, as well as a decreased water vapor and oxygen permeability, especially for C:Z = 1:3 which had better properties. The results suggested that C and Z bilayer films may be a promising material for food packaging with the desired water resistance.

Abstract
Zein is renewable plant protein with valuable film-forming properties that can be used as a packaging material. It is known that the addition of natural cross-linkers can enhance a film’s tensile properties. In this study, we aimed to prepare antimicrobial zein-based films enriched with monolaurin, eugenol, oregano, and thyme essential oil. Films were prepared using the solvent casting technique from ethanol solution. Their physicochemical properties were investigated using structural, morphological, and thermal techniques. Polar and dispersive components were analyzed using two models to evaluate the effects on the surface free energy values. The antimicrobial activity was proven using a disk diffusion method and the suppression of bacterial growth was confirmed via a growth kinetics study with the Gompertz function. The films’ morphological characteristics led to systems with uniform distribution of essential oils or eugenol droplets combined with a flat-plated structure of monolaurin. A unique combination of polyphenolic eugenol and amphiphilic monoglyceride provided highly stretchable films with enhanced barrier properties and efficiency against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and molds. The prepared zein-based films with tunable surface properties represent an alternative to non-renewable resources with a potential application as active packaging materials.

Abstract
In recent years, the interest regarding the use of proteins as renewable resources has deeply intensified. The strongest impact of these biomaterials is clear in the field of smart medicines and biomedical engineering. Zein, a vegetal protein extracted from corn, is a suitable biomaterial for all the above-mentioned purposes due to its biodegradability and biocompatibility. The controlled drug delivery of small molecules, fabrication of bioactive membranes, and 3D assembly of scaffold for tissue regeneration are just some of the topics now being extensively investigated and reported in the literature. Herein, we review the recent literature on zein as a biopolymer and its applications in the biomedical world, focusing on the different shapes and sizes through which it can be manipulated. Zein a versatile biomaterial in the biomedical field. Easy to chemically functionalize with good emulsification properties, can be employed in drug delivery, fabrication of bioactive membranes and 3D scaffolds for tissue regeneration.![]()

Abstract
In this study, following the green, environmentally friendly and sustainable development strategy, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were prepared through a solvent-free esterification reaction between microcrystalline cellulose and maleic anhydride, combined with subsequent ultrasonic treatment, and maleic-anhydride-modified CNC-reinforced zein/catechin/β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanoparticles nanocomposite films were prepared by a facile solution casting. The amount of CNCs in the film matrix was 0–8 wt%, and their effect on structural, physicochemical and functional properties of the resulting films were investigated. SEM images showed that the addition of CNCs made the microstructure of the film more smooth and uniform. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds between CNCs and film matrix were supported by FT-IR. XRD analysis also confirmed the appearance of a crystalline peak due to the existence of CNCs inside the films. The incorporation of CNCs significantly reduced water vapor permeability, water solubility and the swelling degree of the nanocomposite film, and also significantly increased tensile strength and elongation at break from 12.66 to 37.82 MPa and 4.5% to 5.2% (p < 0.05). Moreover, nanocomposite film packaging with CNCs can effectively inhibit the oxidation of soybean oil.

Abstract
As a means to alter the physical properties of electrospun zein fibers, plasticizers (glycerol, lactic acid, and oleic acid) or co-proteins (casein, whey protein, rice protein) were mixed with zein using the solvents acetic acid or aqueous ethanol with or without sodium hydroxide. Incorporating plasticizers or co-proteins had a negligible impact on solution viscosity, solution surface tension, and fiber formation, although electron microscopy of fiber mats showed an increase in bead formation with added co-proteins. Gel electrophoresis identified casein and whey protein in spun mats. Infrared spectra demonstrated the inclusion of plasticizers in fiber mats. Glycerol, lactic acid, and oleic acid reduced the glass transition temperature of bulk fibers. Nanoindentation tests of individual fibers found reduced Young's moduli with added lactic or oleic acids but increased moduli with added casein. Thus, electrospinning zein with food-grade plasticizers or proteins physically modifies fibers, yet incorporating significant protein quantities remains a challenge.

Abstract
The use of organic solvents for the preparation of nanofibers are challenged due to their volatile and hazardous behavior. Recently deep eutectic solvents (DES) are widely recognized as non-volatile and non-hazardous solvents which never been utilized directly for nanofabrication via electrospinning. Here, we present the preparation of Zein nanofibers using deep eutectic solvents (DES-Zein). The DES-Zein nanofibers were produced at an optimized polymer concentration of 45% (w/w) with pH 7.3 and electroconductivity 233 mS cm-1. DES-Zein nanofibers showed aligned to tweed like cedar leaf morphology tuned by varying the spreading angle from 0° to 90°. In contrast to hydrophobic conventional Zein nanofibers, DES-Zein nanofibers showed super hydrophilic character and about 200 nm finer average diameter. The proposed method of preparing Zein nanofibers using DES opens a new door to continuous electrospinning with tunable morphology, having potential to be used for environmental and biomedical applications.

Abstract
The importance of fruit-derived resveratrol (RES) in the treatment of various diseases has been discussed in various research publications. Those research findings have indicated the ability of the molecule as therapeutic in the context of in vitro and in vivo conditions. Mostly, the application of RES in in vivo conditions, encapsulation processes have been carried out using various nanoparticles that are made of biocompatible biomaterials, which are easily digested or metabolized, and RES is absorbed effectively. These biomaterials are non-toxic and are safe to be used as components in the biotherapeutics. They are made from naturally available by-products of food materials like zein or corn or components of the physiological system as with lipids. The versatility of the RES nanoparticles in their different materials, working range sizes, specificity in their targeting in various human diseases, and the mechanisms associated with them are discussed in this review.

Abstract
Recently, layered structures composed of nanofibers have gained attention as a novel material to mimic skin tissue in wound healing applications. The aim of this study is to develop a novel hybrid bilayer material composed of zein based composite film and nanofiber layers as a wound dressing material. The upper layer was composed of H. perforatum oil incorporated zein film including MMT and the bottom layer was comprised of 3D electrospun zein/MMT nanofibers to induce wound healing with the controlled release of H. perforatum oil. The bilayer composites were characterized in terms of mechanical test, WVP, water uptake and surface wettability. Antimicrobial activity of the wound dressings against microorganisms were investigated by disc diffusion method. In vitro cytotoxicity of monolayer film and bilayer structure was performed using WST-1 assay on HS2 keratinocyte and 3T3 cell lines. Results indicated that the prepared monolayer films showed appropriate mechanical and gas barrier properties and surface wettability for wound healing. Controlled release of H. perforatum oil was obtained from fabricated membranes up to 48 h. Bilayer membranes showed antimicrobial activity against E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans and did not show any toxic effect on NIH3T3 mouse fibroblast and HS2 keratinocyte cell lines. In vitro scratch assay results indicated that H. perforatum oil had a wound healing effect by inducing fibroblast migration. The proliferation study supported these results by increasing fibroblast proliferation on H. perforatum oil loaded bilayer membranes.

Abstract
Bone fractures often result in complications that require surgical intervention to promote fracture healing. Tissue engineering seeks to alleviate the need for autologous bone grafting by utilizing scaffolds that can promote bone fracture healing. Plant-derived materials are desirable biomaterials because of their biodegradability, availability, and low immunogenicity. Among various plant-derived proteins, zein, which is a corn protein, has shown promise for bone repair. However, when processed, zein is often blended with synthetic materials to improve mechanical properties and overall hydrolytic stability. In this study, pure zein was electrospun to create fibrous scaffolds and cross-linked with trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether to improve hydrolytic stability. Scaffolds were characterized and evaluated in vitro for promoting the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells, which are bone progenitor cells. Cross-linked zein scaffolds retained their uniform fiber morphologies after hydration. MC3T3-E1 cells grew and differentiated on the zein scaffolds even in the absence of induction factors, as demonstrated by increased alkaline phosphatase activity, mineralization, and early upregulation of Runx2 gene expression, a transcription factor associated with osteoblast differentiation. These studies demonstrate that stable, zein fibrous scaffolds could have potential for use in bone repair applications.

Abstract
Detection and characterization of tumor cells are important for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Various surface attachment methods have been proposed for the capture and enumeration of cancer cells, including immunoaffinity and nanostructured surfaces. Zein, a corn protein, has shown good biocompatibility with human liver cells (HL-7702) and mice fibroblasts (NIH3T3). In previous work, it was found that tissue transglutaminase coated on zein substrates enhanced adhesion and spreading of NIH3T3 fibroblast cells. In the present study, cancer cell adhesion to nanostructured zein substrates was investigated. MDA-MB-231 and HeLa cells were used as cancer cell surrogates. MDA-MB-231 cell immobilization was enhanced on zein films, prepared with 80% ethanol, over glass surfaces. The application of tissue transglutaminase onto nanostructured zein substrates further increased cell spreading and adhesion. Cell immobilization increased linearly with the tissue transglutaminase content of the substrate. The effect of substrate morphology was also investigated by seeding cells on electrospun zein fibers. HeLa cell adhesion was also enhanced by zein substrates. This study provided preliminary supporting evidence for developing a zein platform for circulating tumor cells’ immobilization.

Abstract
Kafirin (KAF), the prolamine protein from sorghum grain, is a promising resource for fabricating renewable and biodegradable materials. However, research efforts in fulfilling its potentials are still lacking. In this work, electrospun kafirin fibers from acetic acid/dichloromethane solutions are reported for the first time. Biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) was blended with kafirin to obtain hybrid KAF/PCL fiber mats with desirable physical properties. Hydrogen bonding between the N-H group of kafirin and the C═O group of PCL was detected in each blended formulation. Our small-angle X-ray scattering results indicated that the long spacing decreased and the average spacing between crystalline lamellae of PCL increased with the increase of kafirin content. Compared to the hydrophobic surface of neat PCL fiber mat, KAF/PCL fiber mats under most of the blend ratios showed hydrophilic surface character, and the swelling property was composition-dependent. The fiber mats evolved from brittle ones to flexible ones with the increase of relative content of PCL. The most desirable mechanical performance was obtained at a kafirin/PCL mass blend ratio of 1:2. To simulate the nutraceutical release in body fluid, carnosic acid (CA) was selected as a nutraceutical model, and release behaviors in selected KAF/PCL fiber mats were found to be diffusion controlled. Whereas the amorphous region of kafirin dominated the release rate, PCL functioned as a hydrophobic skeleton to maintain the 3D scaffold of the fiber matrix. The fabricated KAF/PCL fiber mats open up new applications of underutilized cereal protein in nutraceutical delivery.

Abstract
Different agro-industrial wastes were mixed with different plasticizers and extruded to form the pellets to be used further for development of biodegradable molded pots. Bulk density and macro-porosity are the important engineering properties used to determine the functional characteristics of the biodegradable pellets viz., expansion volume, water solubility, product colour, flowability and compactness. Significant differences in the functional properties of pellets with varying bulk densities (loose and tapped) and macro-porosities (loose, tapped) were observed. The observed mean bulk density of biodegradable pellets made from different formulations ranged between 0.213 and 0.560 g/ml for loose fill conditions and 0.248 to 0.604 g/ml for tapped fill conditions. Biodegradable pellets bear a good compaction for both loose and tapped fill methods. The mean macro-porosity of biodegradable pellets ranged between 1.19 and 54.48 % for loose fill condition and 0.29 to 53.35 % for tapped fill condition. Hausner ratio (HR) for biodegradable pellets varied from 1.026 to 1.328, indicating a good flowability of biodegradable pellets. Pearson's correlation between engineering properties and functional properties of biodegradable pellets revealed that from engineering properties functional properties can be predicted.

Abstract
Wound dressing is a very important factor in the process of wound healing as proper wound care can accelerate the recovery of the wound. In this study, zein nanofibrous mats with fiber diameters around 350-500 nm were prepared by electrospinning and silver (Ag) nanoparticles around 20 nm were concurrently synthesized in situ into the mats. The electrospun nanofibers were characterized by Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Cell viability and activity of fibroblasts cells in zein/Ag mats were also evaluated and results demonstrated good cytocompatibility and attachment of cells on the composite nanofibers. Also, the bactericidal activity of the fabricated mats against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) was investigated via zone of inhibition test and results showed high anti-bacterial performance.
