Copper(I) Catalyzed Decarboxylative Synthesis of Diareno[a,e]cyclooctatetraenes

Diareno[a,e]cyclooctatetraenes find widespread applications as building blocks, ligands, and responsive cores in topologically switchable materials. However, current synthetic methods to these structures suffer from low yields or operational disadvantages. Here, we describe a practical three-step approach to diareno[a,e]cyclooctatetraenes using an efficient copper(I) catalyzed double decarboxylation as the key step. The sequence relies on cheap and abundant reagents, is readily performed on scale, and is amenable also to unsymmetrical derivatives that expand the utility of this intriguing class of structures.

Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of 2-iodobiphenyls with ortho-chloroacetophenones through dual C–H arylation for the construction of tribenzo[a,c,f]cyclooctanones

Recent Advances on Diels-Alder-Driven Preparation of Bio-Based Aromatics

The preparation of high value-added chemicals from renewable resources is a crucial approach towards a sustainable economy. One prominent alternative to the production of petroleum-based chemicals from fossil resources is through the sequential Diels-Alder/aromatization reactions of biomass-derived furan platforms. This Concept is focused on the recent boom in bio-based furan DA strategies for aromatization of bio-based platform chemicals, particularly that of furfurals, ranging from indirect use and activation strategies to recent examples of direct DA reaction of these electron-withdrawing biomass-derived furans.

Synthesis of 2-substituted tetraphenylenes via transition-metal-catalyzed derivatization of tetraphenylene

A new strategy for the synthesis of 2-substituted tetraphenylenes through a transition-metal-catalyzed derivatization has been developed. Three types of functionalities, including OAc, X (Cl, Br, I) and carbonyl, were introduced onto tetraphenylene, which allows the easy access to a variety of monosubstituted tetraphenylenes. These reactions could accelerate research on the properties and application of tetraphenylene derivatives.

Rhodium dinaphthocyclooctatetraene complexes: synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity in [5+2] cycloadditions

Rh COT in the act: a Ni(0)-catalyzed [2+2+2+2] cycloaddition provides a high-yielding, scalable synthesis of the ligand dinaphtho[a,e]cyclooctatetraene (dnCOT). dnCOT complexation with Rh(I) gives [Rh(dnCOT)(MeCN)(2)]SbF(6), an excellent catalyst for [5+2] cycloadditions of vinylcyclopropanes and π-systems with impressive functional group compatibility.

Indenofluorenes and derivatives: syntheses and emerging materials applications

The growing demand for flexible electronic devices and hydrogen storage materials has spurred a resurgence of interest in polyaryl hydrocarbons including graphene, acenes, fullerenes, polythiophenes, etc. Indenofluorenes are another polyaryl molecular scaffold that has shown utility in the organic and hybrid materials arena, with polymers incorporating the indeno[1,2-b]fluorene moiety being common in organic light emitting diodes. This review examines the syntheses and properties of the five distinct indenofluorene regioisomers, with a focus on small molecule applications in organic electronics of this intriguing and somewhat underexplored family of polyaryl hydrocarbons.

Saddle-shaped tetraphenylenes with peripheral gallic esters displaying columnar mesophases

Tetraphenylenes 2 with eight peripheral gallic esters were prepared in two steps from octamethoxytetraphenylene 1 in 19-72% yield. Investigation of the mesomorphic properties of 2 by DSC, POM and X-ray diffraction revealed that derivatives 2a-d with short alkoxy chain lengths (C(5)-C(8)) did not show any mesomorphic properties, whereas compounds 2e-i with C(9)-C(13) chains displayed rectangular columnar mesophases and compounds 2j-l with C(14)-C(16) chains displayed hexagonal columnar mesophases. Furthermore an anomalous odd-even effect of the clearing points of compounds 2e-l versus chain length was detected.

Biotinylated biphenyl ketone-containing 2,4-dioxobutanoic acids designed as HIV-1 integrase photoaffinity ligands

The diketo acid (DKA) class of HIV-1 integrase inhibitors are thought to function by chelating divalent metal ions within the enzyme catalytic center. However, differences in mutations conferring resistance among sub-families of DKA inhibitors suggest that multiple binding orientations may exist. In order to facilitate identification of DKA-binding sites, biotin-tagged biphenyl ketone-containing 2,4-dioxobutanoic acids were prepared as DKA photoaffinity probes. Introduction of biotin was obtained by means of Huisgen [3+2] cycloaddition 'click chemistry.' Two photoprobes, 5a and 5b, were prepared bearing short and long linker segments, respectively, between the biotin and DKA nucleus. The greatest inhibitory potency was shown by 5b, which inhibited 3'-processing and strand transfer reactions with IC50 values of > 333 microM and 12.4 microM, respectively. In cross-linking assays designed to measure disruption of substrate DNA binding, the photoprobes behaved similarly to a reference DKA inhibitor. Analogues 5a and 5b represent novel photoaffinity ligands, which may be useful in clarifying the HIV-1 binding interactions of DKA inhibitors.
