N isomerization restriction and the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. Polymorphs TPE-Nap-Y and TPE-Nap-O were prepared from TPE-Nap, and their emission color and intensity were compared. TPE-Nap-Y is a yellow block crystal with a very weak yellow emission, with its main peak at 565 nm, while TPE-Nap-O is an orange plate crystal that gave a stronger orange emission, with its main peak at 583 nm. Single crystal diffraction data were used to demonstrate the structure–property relationship. The most unique feature was that the torsion angle of TPE-Nap-Y between the benzene ring of the TPE unit and the Nap unit was 54.08°, while that of TPE-Nap-O was 14.19°. Interestingly, the TPE unit assumed propeller-like nonplanar conformations that likely led to different intermolecular interactions, such as C–H⋯O interactions (2.529 Å and 2.617 Å) in TPE-Nap-O and C–H⋯π interactions (3.224 Å and 3.791 Å) in TPE-Nap-Y. These were influenced by the torsion angle, although the molecules in both crystals were arranged in a similar end-to-end slip-stacking mode. These results inferred that the molecular conformation was evidently affected by luminescent properties. Crystals possessing a slightly twisted molecular conformation exhibited stronger emission than those possessing a heavily twisted molecular conformation. These investigations will expand the research on the relationship between the molecular conformation and the emission properties of organic solids, and might provide a new development strategy for organic polymorphs. Organic polymorphs displaying different emission colors and intensities were obtained from aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE)-active tetraphenylethene derivatives, and their luminescent properties were affected mainly by molecular conformation.![]()

Abstract
Seven three-ring phenylene-ethynylene (PE) structural analogs, differing only in the lengths of alkyl chains on terminal aniline substituents, show 50-62 nm bathochromic shifts in emission maxima in response to mechanical force (mechanofluorochromism, MC). These shifts are fully reversible with heat or solvent fuming. Shearing of these solids yields a transition from green-emitting crystalline phases to orange-emitting amorphous phases as established by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Molecules with shorter alkyl chain lengths required higher temperatures to recover the hypsochromically shifted crystalline phases after grinding, while the recovery with chain lengths longer than butyl occurred at room temperature. In addition to this structure-dependent thermochromism, these compounds retain their MC properties in polymer hosts to various extents. The crystalline phases of these materials have PE chromophores that are twisted due to non-covalent perfluoroarene-arene (ArF-ArH) interactions involving perfluorophenyl pendants and the terminal rings of the PE chromophore, resulting in interrupted conjugation and an absence of chromophore aggregation. The MC behavior of an analog without the perfluoroarene rings is severely attenuated. This work demonstrates the general utility of twisted PEs as stimuli-responsive moieties and reveals clear structure-property relationships regarding the effects of alkyl chain length on these materials.

Abstract
Although understanding the conformations and arrangements of conjugated materials as solids is key to their prospective applications, predictive power over these structural factors remains elusive. In this work, substituent effects tune non-covalent interactions between side-chain fluorinated benzyl esters and main-chain terminal arenes, in turn controlling the conformations and interchromophore aggregation of three-ring phenylene-ethynylenes (PEs). Cofacial fluoroarene-arene (ArF-ArH) interactions cause twisting in the PE backbone, interrupting intramolecular conjugation as well as blocking chromophore aggregation, both of which prevent the typically observed bathochromic shift observed upon transitioning PEs from solution to solid. This work highlights two structural factors that determine whether the ArF-ArH interactions, and the resulting twisted, unaggregated chromophores, occur in these solids: (i) the electron-releasing characteristic of substituents on ArH, with more electron-releasing character favoring ArF-ArH interactions, and (ii) the fluorination pattern of the ArF ring, with 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl favoring ArF-ArH interactions over 2,4,6-trifluorophenyl. These trends indicate that considerations of electrostatic complementarity, whether through a polar-π or substituent-substituent mechanism, can serve as an effective design principle in controlling the interaction strengths, and therefore the optoelectronic properties, of these molecules as solids.

Abstract
R–Ph–B(FMes)2 compounds exhibit low reduction potentials, bright emission, a TICT state and unusual long-lived phosphorescence at low temperature.
Three compounds with phenyl (1), 4-tert-butylphenyl (2) and 4-N,N-diphenylaminophenyl (3) groups attached to bis(fluoromesityl)boryl ((FMes)2B) through B–C bonds have been prepared. The restricted rotation about the B–C bonds of boron-bonded aryl rings in solution has been studied by variable-temperature 19F NMR spectroscopy, and through-space F–F coupling has been observed for 3 at low temperature. Steric congestion inhibits binding of 1 by Lewis bases DABCO and tBu3P and the activation of H2 in their presence. Photophysical and electrochemical studies have been carried out on 2, 3, and an analogue of 3 containing a bis(mesityl)boryl ((Mes)2B) group, namely 4. Both 2 and 3 show bright emission in nonpolar solvents and in the solid-state, very strong electron-accepting ability as measured by cyclic voltammetry, and good air-stability. In addition, 2 displayed unusually long-lived emission (τ = 2.47 s) in 2-MeTHF at 77 K. The much stronger acceptor strength of (FMes)2B than (Mes)2B leads to significantly red-shifted emission in solution and the solid state, stronger emission solvatochromism, and significantly lower reduction potentials. Theoretical calculations confirm that 2 and 3 tend to form highly twisted excited states with good conjugation between one FMes group and the boron atom, which correlate well with their blue-shifted solid-state emissions and low kr values in solution.

Abstract
The synthesis, crystal structure, and fluorescence behavior of acetylene-bridged pentiptycene dimer (2), trimer (3), and tetramer (4) are reported. For comparison, a phenylene-pentiptycene-phenylene three-ring system (5) is also investigated. As a result of the unique intrachain pentiptycene-pentiptycene interactions in 3 and 4, their twisted conformers are populated in polar solvents and at low temperatures, and the phenomenon of nonequilibration of excited rotational conformers is observed. Twisting of the pi-conjugated backbones leads to blue-shifted absorption and fluorescence spectra and increased fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. The fluorescence spectra of 2-4 undergo small red shifts but large intensity variations in the 0-1 vs 0-0 bands on going from solutions to thin solid films, which can be accounted for by the reabsorption effect. However, the reduction in fluorescence quantum yields for 2-4 in films vs solutions is mainly attributed to efficient interchain exciton migration to nonfluorescent energy traps. In contrast, the behavior of nonequilibration of excited rotamers is not observed for 5 in solutions. Compound 5 forms J-type aggregates through terminal phenylene pi-stackings in the solid state, resulting in a new absorption band at 377 nm and large red shifts of the structured fluorescence spectra.

Abstract
Valence topological charge-transfer (CT) indices are applied to the calculation of dipole moments μ. The μ calculated by algebraic and vector semisums of the CT indices are defined. The model is generalized for molecules with heteroatoms and corrected for sp3-heteromolecules. The ability of the indices for the description of the molecular charge distribution is established by comparing them with μ of the valence-isoelectronic series of cyclopentadiene, benzene and styrene. Two CT indices, μvec (vector semisum of vertex-pair μ) and μvecV (valence μvec) are proposed. The μvecV behaviour is intermediate between μvec and μexperiment. The correction is produced in the correct direction. The best results are obtained for the greatest group. Inclusion of the heteroatom in the π-electron system is beneficial for the description of μ, owing to either the role of additional p and/or d orbitals provided by the heteroatom or the role of steric factors in the π-electron conjugation. The steric effect is almost constant along the series and the dominating effect is electronic. Inclusion of the heteroatom enhances μ, which can improve the solubility of the molecule. For heteroatoms in the same group, the ring size and the degree of ring flattering are inversely proportional to their electronegativity.

Abstract
A new series of aza-substituted analogues 3-5 based on the 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene moiety have been synthesized by the selective Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction from 5-bromo-2-iodopyrimidine (1). In these linear molecules, the dipolar pyrimidine moiety is introduced as a probe to investigate factors that control the intermolecular interactions over the crystal engineering. The results reveal that the manner of packing changes both dipolar interactions between linear pyrimidine-containing molecules and transition moments simultaneously, resulting in remarkably different photophysical properties. Due to their versatile dipole-dipole and face-to-face pi-piinteractions in a crystal motif, further applications on the design of ordered crystalline materials for the field effect transistors are promising.

Abstract
A simple procedure for the synthesis of cyclopentafused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CP-PAH) with Pd(PPh(3))(2)Cl(2) catalyst has been applied to the one-pot palladium(0)-catalyzed coupling of 9,10-dibromoanthracene (1) with 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol. Reactions carried out in refluxing benzene in the presence of CuSO(4)/Al(2)O(3) yielded 9,10-dialkynylanthracene 2a, alkynyl aceanthrylene 2b, and 2,7-disubstituted cyclopent[hi]aceanthrylene 2c in 13%, 23%, and 19% purified yields, respectively, with total conversions of 80-90%. Sealed tube reactions without copper at 110 degrees C improved the yield of 2c up to >75%. Single-crystal X-ray analyses of 2a and 2c reveal a three-dimensional hydrogen bonding network, producing a unique crystal packing. The packing structure of 2b is dominated by pi-pi stacking interactions between two aceanthrylene molecules. CP-PAHs 2b and 2c have potentially interesting fullerene-like photophysics. While the UV-vis and fluorescence spectra of 2a (Phi(F) = 0.87) show the characteristic vibronic structure of anthracene, the UV-vis spectra of ruby-red aceanthrylene 2b and greenish-black cyclopent[hi]aceanthrylene 2c extend well into the visible range. Isomers 2b and 2c showed no detectable fluorescence emission. Unlike fullerenes, compounds 2b and 2c are poor singlet oxygen sensitizers with measured (1)O(2) quantum yields of 0.02 and 0.06, respectively. As expected from a simple Hückel analysis, 2c has relatively low two-electron reduction potentials as determined by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
A series of photophysical measurements and semiempirical calculations were carried out with 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene in search of evidence on the effects of phenyl group rotation and chromophore aggregation of oligo- and poly(phenyleneethynylene)s. It is suggested that planarization gives rise to relatively modest shifts of ca. 20-30 nm, which preserve the vibronic structure of the monomer and retain a high emission quantum yield. In contrast, it is proposed that aggregation gives rise to larger shifts and loss of vibronic structure.
