Light-driven selective aerobic oxidation of (iso)quinoliniums and related heterocycles

Selective C1–H/C4–H carbonylation of N-methylene iminium salts, catalyzed by visible-light photoredox and oxygen in the air, has been reported. A ruthenium complex acts as a chemical switch to conduct two different reaction pathways and to afford two different kinds of products. In the absence of the ruthenium complex, the Csp²–H bonds adjacent to the nitrogen atoms are oxidized to α-lactams by the N-methyleneiminium substrates themselves as photosensitizers. In the presence of the ruthenium complex, the oxidation reaction site of quinoliniums is switched to the C4 region, resulting in the formation of 4-quinolones. The use of two transformations directly introduces oxygen into the nitrogen heterocyclic skeletons under an air atmosphere.

Photooxidative Generation of Dodecaborate-Based Weakly Coordinating Anions

Redox-active proanions of the type B₁₂(OCH₂Ar)₁₂ [Ar = C₆F₅ (1), 4-CF₃C₆H₄ (2), 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃ (3)] are introduced in the context of an experimental and computational study of the visible-light-initiated polymerization of a family of styrenes. Neutral, air-stable proanions 1-3 were found to initiate styrene polymerization through single-electron oxidation under blue-light irradiation, resulting in polymers with number-average molecular weights (M_n) ranging from ∼6 to 100 kDa. Shorter polymer products were observed in the majority of experiments, except in the case of monomers containing 4-X (X = F, Cl, Br) substituents on the styrene monomer when polymerized in the presence of 1 in CH₂Cl₂. Only under these specific conditions are longer polymers (>100 kDa) observed, strongly supporting the formulation that reaction conditions significantly modulate the degree of ion pairing between the dodecaborate anion and cationic chain end. This also suggests that 1-3 behave as weakly coordinating anions (WCA) upon one-electron reduction because no incorporation of the cluster-based photoinitiators is observed in the polymeric products analyzed. Overall, this work is a conceptual realization of a single reagent that can serve as a strong photooxidant, subsequently forming a WCA.

An expedient approach to 1,2-dihydroisoquinoline derivatives via cobalt catalysed 6-endo dig cyclization followed by Mannich condensation of o-alkynylarylaldimines

A highly effective 6-endo dig cyclisation of o-alkynylaldimines to 1,2-dihydroisoquinolines has been described via direct and nitro Mannich condensation using inexpensive and readily available cobalt chloride as catalyst. This strategy provides an effective procedure for the synthesis of substituted 1,2-dihydroisoquinolines derivatives in moderate to high yields. An addition of pronucleophiles, such as nitromethane, acetone and α-hydroxyacetone, to o-alkynylarylaldimines has been achieved via isoquinolinium intermediate.

Facile Protocol for Water-Tolerant "Frustrated Lewis Pair"-Catalyzed Hydrogenation

Despite rapid advances in the field of metal-free, “frustrated Lewis pair” (FLP)-catalyzed hydrogenation, the need for strictly anhydrous reaction conditions has hampered wide-scale uptake of this methodology. Herein, we report that, despite the generally perceived moisture sensitivity of FLPs, 1,4-dioxane solutions of B(C₆F₅)₃ actually show appreciable moisture tolerance and can catalyze hydrogenation of a range of weakly basic substrates without the need for rigorously inert conditions. In particular, reactions can be performed directly in commercially available nonanhydrous solvents without subsequent drying or use of internal desiccants.

Is universal, simple melting point prediction possible?

An investigation of the melting points of 520 organic 1:1 salts is presented with the aim of developing a universal, simple, physically well-founded prediction scheme. The general reliability and reproducibility of the recorded experimental data are discussed with respect to purity, phase behavior, disorder and thermal history of a given substance. Additionally, mistakes, systematic errors, or lack of conventions can lead to considerable differences in the experimental measurements. A rough error bar for the reproducibility of the melting points of organic salts of ±5 to ±15 °C can be assigned. With this restraint, we developed two simple, semiempirical, five- and nine-parameter schemes with easy-to-calculate quantities. With these, we could predict the melting temperature of a given organic salt in the temperature range of -25 to +300 °C with an average error of 33.5 °C and a relative error of 9.3%. All calculated quantities are assessed with the help of conventional DFT, COSMO and COSMO-RS calculations, and are currently implemented into the IL-Prop module of the upcoming version of COSMOtherm. These prediction schemes are suitable for high-throughput computational screening of substances in the context of "computer-aided synthesis". Therefore, they are valuable tools to find a compound with a suitable melting point before its first synthesis.

Green method for the synthesis of highly substituted cyclohexa-1,3-diene, polyhydroindene, polyhydronaphthalene, isochromene, isothiochromene, and isoquinoline derivatives in ionic liquids

An efficient and green method for the synthesis of highly substituted cyclohexa-1,3-diene, polyhydroindene, polyhydronaphthalene, isochromene, isothiochromene, and isoquinoline derivatives has been developed. The synthesis was achieved by using a multicomponent procedure in ionic liquid media. The features of this procedure are characterized by the following: mild reaction conditions, high yields, one-pot procedures, operational simplicity, and environmentally benign conditions.
