Versatile strategy to access fully functionalized benzodifurans: redox-active chromophores for the construction of extended pi-conjugated materials

Optoelectronic design and charge transport properties of Benzodifuran (BDF) isomers for organic electronic devices: DFT/TD-DFT insights

The primary goal of this work is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the charge transport and optoelectronic characteristics of all the isomers of benzodifuran (BDF) for organic electronic devices in order to suggest qualified materials/candidates for organic photovoltaic devices. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for all possible isomers of BDF and results are compared with corresponding experimental known isomers. Time Dependent-Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) is used for the calculation of the absorption and HOMO-LUMO energy levels. To characterize the electronic charge transport state in these isomers, the ionization potentials (IP), reorganization energies (hole and electron), and electron affinities (EA) of all the isomers are investigated. Comparatively, all the BDF isomers are having low electron and hole reorganization energies and hence they can be used in the organic electronic material fabrication.

Signatures of Room-Temperature Quantum Interference in Molecular Junctions

ConspectusDuring the past decade or so, research groups around the globe have sought to answer the question: "How does electricity flow through single molecules?" In seeking the answer to this question, a series of joint theory and experimental studies have demonstrated that electrons passing through single-molecule junctions exhibit exquisite quantum interference (QI) effects, which have no classical analogues in conventional circuits. These signatures of QI appear even at room temperature and can be described by simple quantum circuit rules and a rather intuitive magic ratio theory. The latter describes the effect of varying the connectivity of electrodes to a molecular core and how electrical conductance can be controlled by the addition of heteroatoms to molecular cores. The former describes how individual moieties contribute to the overall conductance of a molecule and how the overall conductance can change when the connectivities between different moieties are varied. Related circuit rules have been derived and demonstrated, which describe the effects of connectivity on Seebeck coefficients of organic molecules. This simplicity arises because when a molecule is placed between two electrodes, charge transfer between the molecule and electrodes causes the molecular energy levels to adjust, such that the Fermi energy (E_F) of the electrodes lies within the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. Consequently, when electrons of energy E_F pass through a molecule, their phase is protected and transport takes place via phase-coherent tunneling. Remarkably, these effects have been scaled up to self-assembled monolayers of molecules, thereby creating two-dimensional materials, whose room temperature transport properties are controlled by QI. This leads to new molecular design strategies for increasing the on/off conductance ratio of molecular switches and to improving the performance of organic thermoelectric materials. In particular, destructive quantum interference has been shown to improve the Seebeck coefficient of organic molecules and increase their on/off ratio under the influence of electrochemical gating. The aim of this Account is to introduce the novice reader to these signatures of QI in molecules, many of which have been identified in joint studies involving our theory group in Lancaster University and experimental group in Bern University.

A two-site reactive platform in the synthesis of amino-functionalized amphiphilic molecules via sulfenic acids

The synthesis of some bolaamphiphiles is described. It is a convergent approach that allows the linkage of a glucosyl derivative to a bis-functionalized platform, via a copper-free Sonogashira cross-coupling. The central core was obtained from the reaction of a suitably substituted bis-sulfoxide with diethynyl benzenes. The intermediates of such reaction are sulfenyl functions that are easily added to one triple bond of the unsaturated molecules. The functionalization at the central core, through the nucleophilic addition of ammonia or piperidine onto the two vinyl sulfonyl groups already present in the backbones of the molecules, opened the way to the preparation of more complex derivatives. The observation of the formation of new stereogenic carbons with an unexpected significantly high diastereoselectivity was justified and supported by preliminary theoretical calculations. The two ending glucosyl moieties were favourably deprotected to afford the amino-functionalized bolaamphiphilic molecules.

Electroactive Covalent Organic Framework Enabling Photostimulus-Responsive Devices

Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) feature graphene-type 2D layered sheets but with a tunable structure, electroactivity, and high porosity. If these traits are well-combined, then 2D COFs can be applied in electronics to realize functions with a high degree of complexity. Here, a highly crystalline electroactive COF, BDFamide-Tp, was designed and synthesized. It shows regularly distributed pores with a width of 1.35 nm. Smooth and successive films of such a COF were fabricated and found to be able to increase the conductivity of an organic semiconductor by 10³ by interfacial doping. Upon encapsulation of a photoswitchable molecule (spiropyran) into the voids of the COF layer, the resulted devices respond differently to light of different wavelengths. Specifically, the current output ratio after UV vs Vis illumination reaches 100 times, thus effectively creating on and off states. The respective positive and negative feedbacks are memorized by the device and can be reprogrammed by UV/Vis illumination. The reversible photostimulus responsivity and reliable memory of the device are derived from the combination of electroactivity and porosity of the 2D COF. This work shows the capability of 2D COFs in higher-level electronic functions and extends their possible applications in information storage.

Buchwald-Hartwig Amination of Aryl Halides with Heterocyclic Amines in the Synthesis of Highly Fluorescent Benzodifuran-Based Star-Shaped Organic Semiconductors

The study of palladium-catalyzed amination of bromobenzene with aromatic and heterocyclic amines, widely used in the synthesis of organic semiconductors, was performed. The best conditions for the coupling of aryl bromides with carbazole, diphenylamine, phenoxazine, phenothiazine, 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine, and their derivatives have been developed. Based on the results, nine new star-shaped organic semiconductors, exhibiting up to 100% fluorescent quantum yield in the 400-550 nm range, have been synthesized in good yields. The TDDFT calculations of the absorption spectra revealed a good correlation with experimental results and slight solvatochromic effects with a change in the polarity of the solvent.

Bis(Triphenylamine)Benzodifuran Chromophores: Synthesis, Electronic Properties and Application in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

A series of bis(triphenylamine)benzodifuran chromophores have been synthesized and fully characterised. Starting from suitably functionalized benzodifuran (BDF) precursors, two triphenylamine (TPA) moieties are symmetrically coupled to a central BDF unit either at 4,8-positions through double bonds (1) and single bonds (2) respectively, or at 2,6-positions through double bonds (3). Their electronic absorption and photoluminescence properties as well as redox behaviour have been investigated in detail, indicating that the π-extended conjugation via vinyl linkers in 1 and 3 leads to comparatively strong electronic interactions between the relevant redox moieties TPA and BDF. Due to intriguing electronic properties and structural planarity, 3a has been applied as a dopant emitter in organic light-emitting diodes. A yellowish-green OLED exhibits a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.2%, thus exceeding the theoretical upper limit most likely due to energy transfer from an interface exciplex to an emissive layer and/or favorable horizontal orientation.

One-pot access to 2-amino-3-arylbenzofurans: direct entry to polyheterocyclic chemical space

As a means to make new benzofuran-embedded polycyclic structures, we established two efficient one-pot sequential coupling routes to 2-amino-3-arylbenzofurans and 2-amino-3-arylnaphtho[2,1-b]furans. Further ring formation (six- and seven-membered rings) with the resulting amine moiety at the C2 position of benzofurans was realized, leading to further expansion of benzofuran-based chemical space.

Constructive Quantum Interference in Single-Molecule Benzodichalcogenophene Junctions

Heteroatom substitution into the cores of alternant, aromatic hydrocarbons containing only even-membered rings is attracting increasing interest as a method of tuning their electrical conductance. Here, the effect of heteroatom substitution into molecular cores of non-alternant hydrocarbons, containing odd-membered rings, is examined. Benzodichalcogenophene (BDC) compounds are rigid, planar π-conjugated structures, with molecular cores containing five-membered rings fused to a six-membered aryl ring. To probe the sensitivity or resilience of constructive quantum interference (CQI) in these non-bipartite molecular cores, two C₂ -symmetric molecules (I and II) and one asymmetric molecule (III) were investigated. I (II) contains S (O) heteroatoms in each of the five-membered rings, while III contains an S in one five-membered ring and an O in the other. Differences in their conductances arise primarily from the longer S-C and shorter O-C bond lengths compared with the C-C bond and the associated changes in their resonance integrals. Although the conductance of III is significantly lower than the conductances of the others, CQI was found to be resilient and persist in all molecules.

Crystal structures of butyl 2-amino-5-hy-droxy-4-(4-nitro-phen-yl)benzo-furan-3-carboxyl-ate and 2-meth-oxy-ethyl 2-amino-5-hy-droxy-4-(4-nitro-phen-yl)benzo-furan-3-carboxyl-ate

The title benzo-furan derivatives 2-amino-5-hy-droxy-4-(4-nitro-phen-yl)benzo-furan-3-carboxyl-ate (BF1), C19H18N2O6, and 2-meth-oxy-ethyl 2-amino-5-hy-droxy-4-(4-nitro-phen-yl)benzo-furan-3-carboxyl-ate (BF2), C18H16N2O7, recently attracted attention because of their promising anti-tumoral activity. BF1 crystallizes in the space group P . BF2 in the space group P21/c. The nitro-phenyl group is inclined to benzo-furan moiety with a dihedral angle between their mean planes of 69.2 (2)° in BF1 and 60.20 (6)° in BF2. A common feature in the mol-ecular structures of BF1 and BF2 is the intra-molecular N-H⋯Ocarbon-yl hydrogen bond. In the crystal of BF1, the mol-ecules are linked head-to-tail into a one-dimensional hydrogen-bonding pattern along the a-axis direction. In BF2, pairs of head-to-tail hydrogen-bonded chains of mol-ecules along the b-axis direction are linked by O-H⋯Ometh-oxy hydrogen bonds. In BF1, the butyl group is disordered over two orientations with occupancies of 0.557 (13) and 0.443 (13).

Glucose-functionalized amino-OPEs as biocompatible photosensitizers in PDT

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive procedure that can provide a selective eradication of neoplastic diseases by the combined effect of a photosensitizer, light and oxygen. New amino oligo(phenylene-ethynylene)s (OPEs), bearing hydrophilic glucoside terminations, have been prepared, characterized and tested as photosensitizers in PDT. The effectiveness of these compounds in combination with UVA light has been checked on two tumor cell lines (HEp-2 and HeLa cells, derived from a larynx carcinoma and a cervical carcinoma, respectively). The compounds triggered a mitotic blockage that led to the cell death, being the effect active up to 3 μm concentration. The photophysical properties of OPEs, such as high quantum yield, stability, singlet oxygen production, biocompatibility, easy cell-internalization and very good response even at low concentration, make them promising photosensitizers in the application of PDT.

Controlling Electrical Conductance through a π-Conjugated Cruciform Molecule by Selective Anchoring to Gold Electrodes

Tuning charge transport at the single-molecule level plays a crucial role in the construction of molecular electronic devices. Introduced herein is a promising and operationally simple approach to tune two distinct charge-transport pathways through a cruciform molecule. Upon in situ cleavage of triisopropylsilyl groups, complete conversion from one junction type to another is achieved with a conductance increase by more than one order of magnitude, and it is consistent with predictions from ab initio transport calculations. Although molecules are well known to conduct through different orbitals (either HOMO or LUMO), the present study represents the first experimental realization of switching between HOMO- and LUMO-dominated transport within the same molecule.

Electronic transport in benzodifuran single-molecule transistors

Benzodifuran (BDF) single-molecule transistors have been fabricated in electromigration break junctions for electronic measurements. The inelastic electron tunneling spectrum validates that the BDF molecule is the pathway of charge transport. The gating effect is analyzed in the framework of a single-level tunneling model combined with transition voltage spectroscopy (TVS). The analysis reveals that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the thiol-terminated BDF molecule dominates the charge transport through Au-BDF-Au junctions. Moreover, the energy shift of the HOMO caused by the gate voltage is the main reason for conductance modulation. In contrast, the electronic coupling between the BDF molecule and the gold electrodes, which significantly affects the low-bias junction conductance, is only influenced slightly by the applied gate voltage. These findings will help in the design of future molecular electronic devices.

Regulating a benzodifuran single molecule redox switch via electrochemical gating and optimization of molecule/electrode coupling

We report a novel strategy for the regulation of charge transport through single molecule junctions via the combination of external stimuli of electrode potential, internal modulation of molecular structures, and optimization of anchoring groups. We have designed redox-active benzodifuran (BDF) compounds as functional electronic units to fabricate metal-molecule-metal (m-M-m) junction devices by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and mechanically controllable break junctions (MCBJ). The conductance of thiol-terminated BDF can be tuned by changing the electrode potentials showing clearly an off/on/off single molecule redox switching effect. To optimize the response, a BDF molecule tailored with carbodithioate (-CS2(-)) anchoring groups was synthesized. Our studies show that replacement of thiol by carbodithioate not only enhances the junction conductance but also substantially improves the switching effect by enhancing the on/off ratio from 2.5 to 8.

Oligo(phenylene ethynylene) glucosides: modulation of cellular uptake capacity preserving light ON

A new family of oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (OPE) glucosides has been prepared and characterized. Our results demonstrate that fine-tuning of their photophysical properties can be obtained by acting on the electronics of the core and molecular skeleton. Modulation of the hydrophobic chain length and substituents on the central moieties influences the bioaffinity too. In particular, introducing a NMe2 group on the aromatic central core affords a highly efficient biocompatible fluorescent probe that can be taken up in cytoplasmic vesicles of HEp-2 cells (cells from epidermoid carcinoma larynx tissue). The photophysical behavior, high quantum yield, and stability open the way to the use of the OPE family as stains for cellular imaging analysis by fluorescence microscopy.

Synthesis and photochemical properties of pH responsive tris-cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes that contain a pyridine ring on the 2-phenylpyridine ligand

In our previous publication, it was reported that fac-Ir(atpy)3 3 (atpy = 2-(5'-amino-4'-tolyl)pyridine), which contains three amino groups at the 5'-position of the atpy ligands, exhibits a pH-dependent change in the color of the emitted radiation. Aqueous solution of 3 shows a weak red emission (at around 613 nm) under neutral or basic conditions, but the emission color changes to green (at around 530 nm) under acidic conditions, where the NH2 group is protonated to become an electron-withdrawing (NH3)(+) group. In this manuscript, we report on the preparation of some new pH-responsive Ir(III) complexes; fac-Ir(4Pyppy)3 5 and fac-Ir(3Pyppy)3 6 that contain three pyridyl groups at the 5'-position of the 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) ligand, and Ir(4Pyppym)3 7 and Ir(3Pyppym)3 8 that contain a pyridyl group at the same position of the 2-phenylpyrimidine (ppym) ligand. The introduction of three pyridyl groups on iodinated Ir(ppy)3 and Ir(ppym)3 was achieved via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction assisted by microwave irradiation. Solutions of the acid-free Ir(III) complexes 5, 6, 7, and 8 showed a strong green emission (at around 500 nm) in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Protonation of three pyridyl groups of 5 and 7 causes a significant red-shift in the emission wavelength (at around 600 nm) with a decrease in emission intensity. The pH-dependent emission change of these complexes is also discussed. The generation of singlet oxygen ((1)O2) by the photoirradiation of the Ir complexes 5 and 6 was evidenced by the decomposition of 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF), the oxidation of thioanisole, and the oxidation of 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrroline-3-carboxamide (TPC). The induction of necrosis-like cell death of HeLa-S3 cells upon photoirradiation of 5 at 465 nm is also reported.

Directed metalation cascade to access highly functionalized thieno[2,3-f]benzofuran and exploration as building blocks for organic electronics

A tandem directed metalation has been successfully applied to the preparation of thieno[2,3-f]benzofuran-4,8-dione, providing an efficient and facile approach to symmetrically and unsymmetrically functionalize the thieno[2,3-f]benzofuran core at the 2,6 positions as well as to introduce the electron-withdrawing or -donating groups (EWG or EDG) at its 4,8 positions. The presence of various functional groups makes late-stage derivatization attainable.

Probing charge transfer in benzodifuran-C60 dumbbell-type electron donor-acceptor conjugates: ground- and excited-state assays

Rigid electron donor-acceptor conjugates (1-3) that combine π-extended benzodifurans as electron donors and C60 molecules as electron acceptors with different linkers have been synthesized and investigated with respect to intramolecular charge-transfer events. Electrochemistry, fluorescence, and transient absorption measurements revealed tunable and structure-dependent charge-transfer processes in the ground and excited states. Our experimental findings are underpinned by density-functional theory calculations.

Expanding the scope of replicable unnatural DNA: stepwise optimization of a predominantly hydrophobic base pair

As part of an ongoing effort to expand the genetic alphabet for in vitro and eventually in vivo applications, we have synthesized a wide variety of predominantly hydrophobic unnatural base pairs exemplified by d5SICS-dMMO2 and d5SICS-dNaM. When incorporated into DNA, the latter is replicated and transcribed with greater efficiency and fidelity than the former; however, previous optimization efforts identified the para and methoxy-distal meta positions of dMMO2 as particularly promising for further optimization. Here, we report the stepwise optimization of dMMO2 via the synthesis and evaluation of 18 novel para-derivatized analogs of dMMO2, followed by further derivatization and evaluation of the most promising analogs with meta substituents. Subject to size constraints, we find that para substituents can optimize replication via both steric and electronic effects and that meta methoxy groups are unfavorable, while fluoro substituents can be beneficial or deleterious depending on the para substituent. In addition, we find that improvements in the efficiency of unnatural triphosphate insertion translate most directly into higher fidelity replication. Importantly, we identify multiple, unique base pair derivatives that when incorporated into DNA are well replicated. The most promising, d5SICS-dFEMO, is replicated under some conditions with greater efficiency and fidelity than d5SICS-dNaM. These results clearly demonstrate the generality of hydrophobic forces for the control of base pairing within DNA, provide a wealth of new SAR data, and importantly identify multiple new candidates for eventual in vivo evaluation.

Trimethylsilyl-terminated oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s: an approach to single-molecule junctions with covalent Au-C σ-bonds

A new and efficient approach using cleaving of trimethylsilyl groups to create covalent Au-C anchoring sites has been developed for single-molecule junction conductance measurements. Employing the mechanically controllable break junction (MCBJ) technique in liquid, we demonstrate the formation of highly conducting single molecular junctions of several OPE derivatives. The created junctions are mechanically stable and exhibit conductances around one order of magnitude higher than those of their dithiol analogues. Extended assembly and reaction times lead to oligomerization. Combined STM imaging and gap-mode Raman experiments provide structure evidence to support the formation of covalent Au-C contacts and further oligomerization.

Carbazolyl benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']difuran: an ambipolar host material for full-color organic light-emitting diodes

We have designed an ambipolar material, 3,7-bis[4-(N-carbazolyl)-phenyl]-2,6-diphenylbenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']difuran (CZBDF), and synthesized it by zinc-mediated double cyclization. Its physical properties clarified that CZBDF possesses a wide-gap character, well-balanced and high hole and electron mobilities of larger than 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), and a high thermal stability. Using CZBDF as a host material for heterojunction OLED devices, a full range of visible emission was obtained. Notably, CZBDF also enabled us to fabricate RGB-emitting homojunction OLEDs, with performances comparable or superior to the heterojunction devices composed of several materials.

Synthesis, structures, redox and photophysical properties of benzodifuran-functionalised pyrene and anthracene fluorophores

Benzodifuran-functionalised pyrene and anthracene fluorophores 1 and 2 were obtained in reasonable yields. Their single crystal structures, electrochemical, optical absorption, and fluorescence characteristics have been described. They show strong luminescence with high quantum yields of 0.53 for 1 and 0.48 for 2.
