Abstract
Covering: 2009 to 2022The Stemona alkaloids, which are found in plant species from the family Stemonaceae, represent a tremendously large and structurally-diverse family of natural products. This review presents and discusses a selection of case studies, grouped by alkaloid class, that showcase the key strategies and overall progress that has been made in the synthesis of Stemona alkaloids and related compounds since 2009. Structural reassignments that have been reported over this period are also identified where necessary.

Abstract
Polycyclic alkaloid natural products featuring pyrrolidine and pyrrolidinone motifs remain enduring targets of total synthesis endeavors. Pyrrole and its derivatives have been exploited to access many such frameworks, including alkaloids belonging to the Aspidosperma, Stemona, and batzelladine families. In this article, a selection of exemplars that highlight the utility of pyrrole-based approaches to facilitate total syntheses of pyrrolidine- and pyrrolidinone-containing alkaloids and related molecules are showcased.

Abstract
The instability of van der Waals (vdW) materials leads to spontaneous morphological and chemical transformations in the air. Although the passivation of vdW materials with other resistive materials is often used to solve stability issues, this passivation layer can block carrier injection and thus interfere with charge transfer doping. In this study, a facile method is proposed for n-doping and mediation of Se vacancies in tungsten diselenide (WSe2) by poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) coating. The major carrier type of the PVP-coated WSe2-based field-effect transistor (FET) was converted from hole (p-type) to electron (n-type). Furthermore, the vacancy-induced interface trap density was reduced by approximately 500 times. This study provides a practical doping and passivation method for the van der Waals materials, as well as a comprehensive understanding of the chemical reaction and electronic transport in these materials.

Abstract
This report investigates the fundamental basis for rather surprising patterns of reactivity in Brønsted acid-mediated cyclizations of pyrrole substrates bearing pendant Michael acceptors that were identified during syntheses of Stemona alkaloids. Integrated experimental and theoretical studies reveal the profound influence that substituent effects have on the viability of these transformations. Additionally, we identify that electronic effects, in addition to barrier-lowering secondary orbital interactions within transition states, account for the exclusive preference for 7-endo-trig cyclizations over 6-exo-trig cyclizations.

Abstract
The first total syntheses of the Stemona alkaloid dehydrostenine A and the structure assigned to dehydrostenine B have been completed from a simple pyrrole substrate in 10 and 11 steps, respectively. Two independent Brønsted-acid-mediated intramolecular Michael additions were exploited to construct the tetracyclic dehydrostenine core. As a result of synthetic studies and associated analysis of the relevant literature, revisions of the structures originally assigned to dehydrostenines A and B are proposed.

Abstract
The first total syntheses of the Stemona alkaloids sessilifoliamides B and D and the second synthesis of sessilifoliamide C have been completed from a simple pyrrole substrate. The bicyclic lactam core was prepared on a gram scale via a Brønsted acid mediated cyclization and controlled oxidation with Dess-Martin periodinane. This delivered sessilifoliamide C (and its C-11 epimer) in 24% yield over 11 steps, and sessilifoliamides B and D in 13 and 17 steps, respectively.

Abstract
The allene functionality has participated in one of the most exciting voyages in organic chemistry, from chemical curiosities to a recurring building block in modern organic chemistry. In the last decades, a special kind of allene, namely, allenol, has emerged. Allenols, formed by an allene moiety and a hydroxyl functional group with diverse connectivity, have become common building blocks for the synthesis of a wide range of structures and frequent motif in naturally occurring systems. The synergistic effect of the allene and hydroxyl functional groups enables allenols to be considered as a unique and sole functionality exhibiting a special reactivity. This Review summarizes the most significant contributions to the chemistry of allenols that appeared during the past decade, with emphasis on their synthesis, reactivity, and occurrence in natural products.

Abstract
The organocatalytic synthesis of indolizinones and pyrrolo-azepinones has been accomplished in a tandem fashion through a sequence that comprises initial cycloaromatization followed by intramolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation. The process takes place under Brønsted acid catalysis, giving rise to final products in moderate to good yields. Attempts to carry out the tandem protocol in an enantioselective fashion were performed with chiral (R)-BINOL-derived N-triflyl phosphoramides. After initial optimization, the tandem process took place with moderate levels of enantioselectivity.

Abstract
The first total syntheses of the stemona alkaloids bisdehydroneostemoninine and bisdehydrostemoninine in racemic forms have been achieved. The synthetic strategy features a novel palladium-catalyzed carbonylative spirolactonization of a hydroxycyclopropanol to rapidly construct the oxaspirolactone moiety. It also features a Lewis acid promoted tandem Friedel-Crafts cyclization and lactonization to form the 5-7-5 tricyclic core of the target stemona alkaloids.

Abstract
Novel methodologies for the selective synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-a]azepines or 4,6-dicarbonyl indoles starting from pyrrole derivatives and alkynones are described. When reactions were carried out with 1,2,4-trisubstituted N-propargyl pyrroles using a ZnI2 catalyst, pyrrolo[1,2-a]azepines were obtained. Whereas 4,6-dicarbonyl indoles were produced selectively with 1,2-disubstituted pyrroles in the presence of silica gel. The reaction outcomes depend on the substituent pattern of the substrates and the nature of the catalysts chosen. Control reactions suggested that the formation of a conjugated enamine intermediate was crucial for both the processes. With easily accessible starting materials, inexpensive catalysts and an easy-to-handle procedure, this reaction has the potential to become a general protocol for the synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-a]azepines or indoles.
