Regioselective Stepwise Bromination of Boron Dipyrromethene (BODIPY) Dyes

Smartphone-based detection and discrimination of amine vapors by a single dye-adsorbed material

Smartphone-assisted analysis has become widely utilized for detecting various species in recent years. In such studies, multiple dyes should be employed to ensure selectivity and analyte discrimination. In our research, we have demonstrated the capability of a specially synthesized dye to selectively detect and discriminate liquid amine vapors. The developed material employs meso-toluene-α,β,α',β'-tetrabromoBODIPY immobilized on a thin-layer chromatography plate, exhibiting structure-specific color changes in response to amine vapors. The hue values of these colors, observed under both ambient and UV light, enable discrimination even among closely related amine structures. A mobile application has also been developed for the rapid interpretation of test results.

Correlative multimodal optical and X-ray fluorescence imaging of brominated fluorophores

Imaging with multiple modalities can maximise the information gained from the analysis of a single sample. probes for optical fluorescence and X-ray fluorescence microscopy based on brominated 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide and BODIPY scaffolds have been successfully designed and synthesised. Herein we show that these prototype probes, based on each of these scaffolds, can be imaged in two different cancer cell lines, and that the respective optical fluorescence and X-ray fluorescence signals are well correlated in these images.

Synthesis and Regioselective Functionalization of Tetrafluorobenzo-[α]-Fused BOPYPY Dyes

The synthesis of a new bis-BF2 tetrafluorobenzo-[α]-fused BOPYPY dye from 4,5,6,7-tetrafluoroisoindole and 2-hydrazinopyrazine is reported. The regioselectivity of nucleophilic substitution reactions at the periphery of the tetrafluorinated BOPYPY and its α-bromo derivative were investigated using N-, O-, S-, and C-based nucleophiles. Among the aromatic fluorine atoms, the F2 atom is consistently regioselectively substituted, except when the α-position contains a thiophenol group; in this case, F4 is substituted instead due to stabilizing π-π-stacking between the two aromatic groups. The α-bromo BOPYPY derivative also reacts under Stille cross-coupling reaction conditions to produce the corresponding α-substituted product. The spectroscopic properties of these new fluorinated BOPYPYs were investigated and compared with nonfluorinated analogs.

BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts in the efficient synthesis of diversely functionalized BODIPYs and selective detection of serum albumin

BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts were readily accessible from the high-yielding reaction of BODIPY with iodoarenes or hydroxyl(tosyloxy)iodoarenes in the presence of m-CPBA. The prepared BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts bearing substituents of varied electronic nature were utilized for the direct syntheses of thiocyanate, azide, amine and acrylate functionalized BODIPYs and β,β'-bis-BODIPYs. The regioselective syntheses of α-piperidinyl and β-piperidinyl substituted BODIPYs were achieved through the reaction of BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts with piperidine in the absence and presence of copper(I). Expeditious and high yielding (79-82%) synthesis of β,β'-bis-BODIPYs was also developed through the palladium-catalyzed reductive coupling of the easily accessible BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts. Some of the indole-appended BODIPYs and bis-BODIPYs displayed strong absorption in the visible region (∼610 nm). The BODIPY(aryl)iodonium salts also showed significant binding with serum albumin and were observed to be selective serum protein sensors with estimated limits of detection as low as 7 μg mL-1 in some cases.

Synthesis, Structures and Photophysical Properties of Asymmetric Fulvene-[b]-fused BODIPYs

Herein, we developed a one-pot procedure to synthesize novel fulvene-[b]-fused BODIPYs from α-(2-alkynylphenyl)-pyrrole and acylpyrrole, using 5-exo cyclization as the key transformation. Compared to benzene-[b]-fused BODIPYs, although they have similar chemical compositions, their structures and properties significantly differ from each other, which can be attributed to the less aromaticity of the fulvene linker than benzene. Notably, fulvene-[b]-fused BODIPY 1 b exhibits helical-twisted core skeleton, intensified red-shifted absorption, and peak fluorescence. In addition, the pathway of this one-pot reaction and the mechanism of POCl3 mediated 5-exo cyclization have been proposed by a combining experimental and computational study.

Tuning of Redox Potentials and LUMO Levels of BODIPYs via Site-Selective Direct Cyanation

Through a strong oxidant Pb(OAc)4 promoted oxidative nucleophilic hydrogen substitution, site-selective direct and stepwise cyanation of BODIPYs using tetrabutylammonium cyanide was developed to give α-cyanated BODIPY derivatives. Characterization of optical and electrochemical properties of these dyes provides substantial enhancement of the electron affinity, with a reduction potential and LUMO level as low as -0.04 V and -4.43 eV, respectively. Radical anions of these electron-deficient 3,5-dicyanated BODIPYs were characterized by absorption and EPR spectroscopy.

Extended BODIPYs as Red-NIR Laser Radiation Sources with Emission from 610 nm to 750 nm

Herein, we report the synthetic access to a set of π-extended BODIPYs featuring a penta-arylated (phenyl and/or thiophene) dipyrrin framework. We take advantage of the full chemoselective control of 8-methylthio-2,3,5,6-tetrabromoBODIPY when we conduct the Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling (LSCC) to functionalize exclusively the meso-position, followed by the tetra-Suzuki reaction to arylate the halogenated sites. All these laser dyes display absorption and emission bands in the red edge of the visible spectrum reaching the near-infrared with thiophene functionalization. The emission efficiency, both fluorescence and laser, of the polyphenylBODIPYs can be enhanced upon decoration of the peripheral phenyls with electron donor/acceptor groups at para positions. Alternatively, the polythiopheneBODIPYs show an astonishing laser performance despite the charge transfer character of the emitting state. Therefore, these BODIPYs are suitable as a palette of stable and bright laser sources covering the spectral region from 610 nm to 750 nm.

BODIPY as a Multifunctional Theranostic Reagent in Biomedicine: Self-Assembly, Properties, and Applications

The use of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) in biomedicine is reviewed. To open, its synthesis and regulatory strategies are summarized, and inspiring cutting-edge work in post-functionalization strategies is highlighted. A brief overview of assembly model of BODIPY is then provided: BODIPY is introduced as a promising building block for the formation of single- and multicomponent self-assembled systems, including nanostructures suitable for aqueous environments, thereby showing the great development potential of supramolecular assembly in biomedicine applications. The frontier progress of BODIPY in biomedical application is thereafter described, supported by examples of the frontiers of biomedical applications of BODIPY-containing smart materials: it mainly involves the application of materials based on BODIPY building blocks and their assemblies in fluorescence bioimaging, photoacoustic imaging, disease treatment including photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and immunotherapy. Lastly, not only the current status of the BODIPY family in the biomedical field but also the challenges worth considering are summarized. At the same time, insights into the future development prospects of biomedically applicable BODIPY are provided.

Bromo- and glycosyl-substituted BODIPYs for application in photodynamic therapy and imaging

The introduction of heavy atoms into the BODIPY-core structure has proven to be a straightforward strategy for optimizing the design of such dyes towards enhanced generation of singlet oxygen rendering them suitable as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this work, BODIPYs are presented by combining the concept of bromination with nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S_NAr) of a pentafluorophenyl or a 4-fluoro-3-nitrophenyl moiety to introduce functional groups, thus improving the phototoxic effect of the BODIPYs as well as their solubility in the biological environment. The nucleophilic substitution enabled functionalization with various amines and alcohols as well as unprotected thiocarbohydrates. The phototoxic activity of these more than 50 BODIPYs has been assessed in cellular assays against four cancer cell lines in order to more broadly evaluate their PDT potential, thus accounting for the known variability between cell lines with respect to PDT activity. In these investigations, dibrominated polar-substituted BODIPYs, particularly dibrominated glyco-substituted compounds, showed promising potential as photomedicine candidates. Furthermore, the cellular uptake of the glycosylated BODIPYs has been confirmed via fluorescence microscopy.

Recent Advances in Chemodosimeters Designed for Amines

The analysis of amines has long been a very important task in science, industry, and healthcare. To date, this task has been accomplished by using expensive and time-consuming methods. Colorimetric and fluorescent chemodosimeters enable the fast, accurate, and sensitive analysis of various species with inexpensive instruments or the naked eye. Accordingly, the studies on these probes have gained great momentum in the last 20 years. In this review, amine chemodosimeters developed in the last 10 years were investigated. The investigated chemodosimeters are metal-free structures based on small organic compounds. The strategies for the detection, differentiation, and quantification of amines were discussed by considering the reaction types.

Analyte Detection: A Decade of Progress in the Development of Optical/Fluorescent Sensing Probes

The development of selective and sensitive chemical sensors capable of detecting metal ions, anions, neutral species, explosives and hazardous substances, selectively and sensitively has attracted considerable interest of various research groups. The presence of such analytes within the permissible limits is often beneficial, but the excess amounts may lead to lethal effects to both the environment as well as the living organisms. Owing to the toxicity of the heavy metal ions, toxic anions and nitro-aromatics which are main constituents of explosives, the timely detection of these materials is most desirable to ensure safety and security of the mankind. In this personal account, we present several classes of molecular sensors that were specifically designed in our lab during the past decade for detecting several species in solutions, solid state as well as biological media. Modulation of the optical properties in response to the presence of guest species, led to selective and sensitive detection protocols, and was supported by the theoretical studies wherever possible. We have also extended the application of some of these probes for the on-site detection of analytes by developing the paper strips, glass slides and even the wool and cotton fabrics loaded with probes. One such development represents detection of palladium in human urine and blood samples collected from clinical samples. Additionally, the sensing events in some cases have successfully been reproduced in the live cancer cells. Based on the ease and cost-effective synthesis of the molecular probes, we hope that this account shall provide significant information to researchers in understanding the structure dependent sensing capabilities of the molecular probes.

Aza-BODIPY Route to Ageladine A

The marine natural product ageladine A was synthesized by exploiting novel aza-BODIPY-type boron complexes that allowed the regioselective dibromination of the pyrrole unit, as confirmed by quantum chemical calculation (ωB97XD/TApr-cc-pVDZ). The parent tricycle was accessed by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling employing Buchwald's precatalyst. The boron complex of ageladine A exhibited strong fluorescence that was greater than that of the natural product by a factor of ∼30 and that disappeared in the presence of 2-azido groups.

Acetoxymethyl-BODIPY dyes: a universal platform for the fluorescent labeling of nucleophiles

A general and robust methodology has been developed for the direct incorporation of a wide variety of C-, N-, P-, O-, S-, and halo-nucleophiles into functional BODIPY conjugates in a single reaction step.

Dibromo-BODIPY as an Organic Photocatalyst for Radical-Ionic Sequences

A new dibrominated 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) is reported as a new metal-free photocatalyst. This BODIPY showed similar optoelectronic, electrochemical, and performance properties to those of Ru(bpy)₃Cl₂, one of the most common photocatalysts in a known radical-ionic transformation, such as the formation of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds. Moreover, additional sequences in which the generated oxonium ion is trapped by an internal nucleophile were developed using this BODIPY photocatalyst. These new sequences allowed the straightforward preparation of γ-alkoxylactones, monoprotected 1,4-ketoaldehydes, and dihydrofurans. This new catalyst, the methodology, and the forged functional groups could be important tools in organic synthesis.

Synthesis and Reactivity of 3,5-Diiodo-BODIPYs via a Concerted, Double Aromatic Finkelstein Reaction

3,5-Diiodo-8-aryl-BODIPYs are prepared from the corresponding 3,5-dichloro- and 3,5-dibromo- congeners via a double aromatic Finkelstein reaction with NaI in refluxing propionitrile, in yields from 51 to 100%. Rate enhancement is observed for 3,5-dibromo-BODIPYs (ArBr > ArCl) suggesting a concerted S_NAr mechanism for this transformation. Thus formed 3,5-diiodo-BODIPYs are examined as coupling partners in Migita-Kosugi-Stille, Mizoroki-Heck, Sonogashira, and Suzuki-Miyaura reactions, providing routes toward complex BODIPY architectures.

BODIPY-peptide conjugate: Synthesis, photo-physical and cell viability studies

The synthesis and biological studies of BODIPY-GPR peptide conjugate (BD-2) are reported. As compared to the parent BODIPY (BD-1), the peptide linked BD-2showed blue shifted absorption and emission with excellent Stokes shift of 201 nm. Molecular docking studies on EGFR protein kinase indicated very efficient binding affinity of BD-2 as compared to the standard drug (Erlotinib). The cell viability experiments of BD-2on normal (HEK293T) and lung cancer (A549) cell lines indicated 85–95% viability. Bioimaging studies showed that, BD-2was able to penetrate the lung cancer cell line.

Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Dehydrogenative Strategy for Direct and Regioselective Oligomerization of BODIPY Dyes

A family of directly β,γ-linked BODIPY oligomers up to pentamers were regioselectively prepared via Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidative C-H cross-coupling. The structural integrity of β,γ-linked dimers was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. These structurally unprecedented oligomers showed red-shifted absorptions and near-infrared emissions along with efficient intersystem crossing, giving Φ_Δ in the range of 12-43%, for potential use as heavy-atom-free photosensitizers.

Strategic Construction of Sulfur-Bridged BODIPY Dimers and Oligomers as Heavy-Atom-Free Photosensitizers

An efficient strategy for building sulfur-bridged oligo-BODIPYs based on the S_NAr reaction is described. These oligo-BODIPYs showed broadband and strong visible-near-infrared (NIR) light absorption, strong intramolecular exciton coupling, and efficient intersystem crossing (ISC). Generation of ¹O₂ as well as O₂^•- under irradiation was found to give high reactive oxygen species generation efficiencies for those oligomers.

A Family of Highly Fluorescent and Membrane-Permeable Bis(BF2) Acyl-Pyridinylhydrazine Dyes with Strong Solid-State Emission and Large Stokes Shifts: The BOAPH Fluorophores

Organic small-molecule fluorescent chromophores have become essential to modern chemical, biological, and materials related investigations. Herein, a straightforward synthesis and subsequent borylation were presented to form a novel family of bisBF₂-anchoring acyl-pyridinylhydrazine, which we named BOAPH. The chromophore enjoys outstanding structural diversities owing to varied acyl chlorides and N-heteroarenylhydrazides. These resultant BOAPH dyes are confirmed by NMR, HRMS, and single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. Their spectroscopic properties were studied, and most of the strong absorbance and bright fluorescence with maximum wavelengths centered in the range of 400 and 650 nm. More importantly, they exhibit promising fluorescence quantum yields up to 0.79 in solution and solid states, good photostability, and large Stokes shifts. Furthermore, a respective BOAPH dye with a para-dimethylaminophenyl group exhibited the interesting ability of ultrafast staining and two-photon imaging, which can specifically label lipid droplets of living cells immediately without the need for incubation.

Synthesis, Spectroscopic, and 1O2 Sensitization Characteristics of Extended Pd(II) 10,10-Dimethylbiladiene Complexes Bearing Alkynyl-Aryl Appendages

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which involves the photoinduced sensitization of singlet oxygen, is an attractive treatment for certain types of cancer. The development of new photochemotherapeutic agents remains an important area of research. Macrocyclic tetrapyrrole compounds including porphyrins, phthalocyanines, chlorins, and bacteriochlorins have been pursued as sensitizers of singlet oxygen for PDT applications but historically are difficult to prepare/purify and can also suffer from high nonspecific dark toxicity, poor solubility in biological media, and/or slow clearance from biological tissues. In response to these shortcomings, we have developed a series of novel linear tetrapyrrole architectures complexed to late transition metals as potential PDT agents. We find that these dimethylbiladiene (DMBil1) tetrapyrrole complexes can efficiently photosensitize generation of ¹O₂ oxygen upon irradiation with visible light. To extend the absorption profile of the DMBil1 platform, alkynyl-aryl groups have been conjugated to the periphery of the tetrapyrrole using Sonogashira methods. Derivatives of this type containing ancillary phenyl (DMBil-PE), naphthyl (DMBil-NE), and anthracenyl (DMBil-AE) groups have been prepared and characterized. In addition to structurally characterizing Pd[DMBil-NE] and Pd[DMBil-AE], we find that extension of the tetrapyrrole conjugation successfully red-shifts the absorption of the DMBil-Ar family of biladienes further into the phototherapeutic window (i.e., 600-900 nm). Photochemical sensitization studies demonstrate that our series of new palladium biladiene complexes (Pd[DMBil-Ar]) can sensitize the formation of ¹O₂ with quantum yields in the range Φ_Δ = 0.59-0.73 upon irradiation with light of λ ≥ 650 nm. The improved absorption properties of the Pd[DMBil-Ar] complexes in the phototherapeutic window, together with their high ¹O₂ quantum yields, highlight the promise of these compounds as potential agents for PDT.

Direct C–H alkoxylation of BODIPY dyes via cation radical accelerated oxidative nucleophilic hydrogen substitution: a new route to building blocks for functionalized BODIPYs

A convenient C–H alkoxylation reaction between BODIPY dyes and a variety of alcohols was developed via a cation radical accelerated oxidative nucleophilic hydrogen substitution.

The main strategies for tuning BODIPY fluorophores into photosensitizers

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive technique for the treatment of target malignant tumors via the generation of highly reactive singlet oxygen species. PDT treatment of cancer/tumor tissues greatly relies on the development of suitable stable, highly specific and efficient photosensitizers. BODIPY (Boron dipyrromethene) derivatives, as a class of well-developed, versatile fluorescent dyes, has emerged as a new class of PDT agents over the past decade. Many elegant strategies have been developed to enhance the singlet oxygen generation efficiency and the cancer/tumor cell selectivity of BODIPY-based photosensitizers to improve the therapeutic outcomes as well as to minimize the side effects. Many of the currently reported BODIPY-based photosensitizers are valuable dual imaging and therapeutic agents, which can efficiently generate singlet oxygen for PDT and emit fluorescence for in vivo imaging. Although the currently approved PDT agents used for clinical trials do not feature BODIPYs, this situation is expected to change. In this review, we provide an overview of the various strategies that have been used to improve the singlet oxygen generation efficiency for tuning BODIPY fluorophores into photosensitizers and dual imaging/therapeutic agents. Their photophysical properties and photocytotoxic activity including the absorption/emission wavelengths, the singlet oxygen generation efficiency ([Formula: see text] and the half maximal inhibitory concentration [Formula: see text] of these currently reported photosensitizers are summarized. We believe these newly developed BODIPY-based photosensitizers will broaden current concepts of strategies for PDT agent design, and promise to make an important contribution to the diagnosis and therapeutics for the treatment of cancer.

Photodynamic activity of 2,6-diiodo-3,5-dithienylvinyleneBODIPYs and their folate-functionalized chitosan-coated Pluronic® F-127 micelles on MCF-7 breast cancer cells

A 2,6-diiodo-3,5-dithienylvinyleneBODIPY dye was prepared and encapsulated with folate-chitosan capped Pluronic[Formula: see text] F-127 to provide drug delivery systems for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Moderately enhanced singlet oxygen quantum yields were observed for the dye encapsulation complexes in water. The in vitro dark cytotoxicity and photodynamic activity were investigated on the human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell line. Minimal dark cytotoxicity was observed for the BODIPY dyes in 5% DMSO and when encapsulated in folate-functionalized chitosan-coated Pluronic[Formula: see text] F-127 micelles, since the cell viability values are consistently greater than 80% over the 0-40 [Formula: see text] concentration range. Upon irradiation of the samples, significant cytocidal activity was observed for the encapsulation complex of a 2,6-diiodo-8-dimethylaminophenyl-3,5-dithienylvinyleneBODIPY dye with less than 50% viable cells observed at concentrations [Formula: see text].

Exploring the relationship between structure and activity in BODIPYs designed for antimicrobial phototherapy

A synthetic strategy to BODIPY dyes is presented giving access to a range of new compounds relevant in the context of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). BODIPYs with the 8-(4-fluoro-3-nitrophenyl) and the 8-pentafluorophenyl substituents were used for the synthesis of new mono- and dibrominated BODIPYs. The para-fluorine atoms in these electron-withdrawing groups facilitate functional modification via nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) with a number of amines and thio-carbohydrates. Subsequently, the antibacterial phototoxic activity of these BODIPYs has been assessed in bacterial assays against the Gram-positive germ S. aureus and also against the Gram-negative germ P. aeruginosa. The bacterial assays allowed to identify substitution patterns which ensured antibacterial activity not only in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) but also in the presence of serum, hereby more realistically modelling the complex biological environment that is present in clinical applications.

Optical Limiting and Femtosecond Pump-Probe Transient Absorbance Properties of a 3,5-distyrylBODIPY Dye

The optical limiting (OL) properties of a 3,5-di-p-benzyloxystyrylBODIPY dye with an p-acetamidophenyl moiety at the meso-position have been investigated by using the open-aperture Z-scan technique at 532 nm with 10 ns laser pulses. There is a ca. 140 nm red shift of the main spectral band to 644 nm relative to the corresponding BODIPY core dye, due to the incorporation of p-benzyloxystyryl groups at the 3,5-positions. As a result, there is relatively weak absorbance across most of the visible region under ambient light conditions. Analysis of the observed reverse saturable absorbance (RSA) profiles demonstrates that the dye is potentially suitable for use in optical limiting applications as has been reported previously for other 3,5-distyrylBODIPY dyes. Time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy and kinetic studies with femtosecond and nanosecond scale laser pulses provide the first direct spectral evidence that excited state absorption (ESA) from the S1 state is responsible for the observed OL properties.

gem-Dibromovinyl boron dipyrrins: synthesis, spectral properties and crystal structures

A family of new asymmetric and symmetric 1,3,7,9-tetramethyl-4,4-bora difluoro-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) derivatives, bearing gem-dibromovinyl substituents, was synthesized by the Corey-Fuchs olefination method. One or two gem-dibromovinyl moieties were attached at either the p-position of 5-phenyl, or the β-position of the pyrrole ring, directly or, through phenyl spacers. The assigned structures were supported by MS, NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁹F), X-ray diffraction analysis and for some compounds 2D HSQC and ¹¹B NMR as well as optical spectroscopy. Their absorption and fluorescence properties and solvatochromism in different solvents were investigated. The highest absorption and emission maxima were obtained for compounds having two gem-dibromovinyl groups attached directly or through the phenyl spacer. The best correlation (R-coefficient) between the solvent and spectral properties of the BODIPYs were obtained using the refractive index of the solvent. Although these compounds are structurally quite similar, their solid states show remarkable differences in the crystal system, clearly revealing two distinct patterns of gem-dibromovinyl orientation and torsion angles of the 5-phenyl ring and the indacene plane. Hirshfeld surface analysis data were used to visualize various intermolecular interactions.

BODIPY as electron withdrawing group for the activation of double bonds in asymmetric cycloaddition reactions

In this work we have found that a BODIPY can be used as an electron withdrawing group for the activation of double bonds in asymmetric catalysis. The synthesis of cyclohexyl derivatives containing a BODIPY unit can easily be achieved via trienamine catalysis. This allows a new different asymmetric synthesis of BODIPY derivatives and opens the door to future transformation of this useful fluorophore. In addition, the Quantum Chemistry calculations and mechanistic studies provide insights into the role of BODIPY as an EWG.

β-AlkenylBODIPY Dyes: Regioselective Synthesis via Oxidative C-H Olefination, Photophysical Properties, and Bioimaging Studies

A series of 2-alkenyl- and 2,6-dialkenylboron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives were synthesized through Pd(II)-catalyzed regioselective and stereoselective oxidative C-H olefination in one step. The 2-alkenyl BODIPY derivative further reacted with various amines regioselectively at the 5-position through direct oxidative nucleophilic substitution. The photophysical properties of the 2-alkenyl- and 2,6-dialkenyl-substituted BODIPYs were investigated, which showed great potential in fluorescent bioimaging.

Application of a bodipy-C70 dyad in triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion of perylene as a metal-free photosensitizer

A bodipy-C70 dyad was synthesized and applied in triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion of perylene as a novel metal-free organic photosensitizer. The photophysical processes were investigated by the methods of steady-state UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations. The bodipy-C70 dyad showed an increased molar extinction coefficient up to 82 300 mol-1 cm-1 at 518 nm compared with the C70 monomer. With photo-excitation of the bodipy moiety at 532 nm, the intramolecular singlet-singlet energy transfer between bodipy and C70 units was efficient with a quantum yield of nearly 100%, and the lowest triplet state of the dyad was subsequently populated via ISC of the C70 moiety, with a lifetime of ca. 80 μs in toluene. Electrochemical investigation suggested that the intramolecular electron transfer of the excited dyad was thermodynamically prohibited in toluene due to the positive ΔGCS for charge-separation. With the presence of perylene in solution as the triplet energy acceptor and emitter, the TTA upconverted fluorescence was observed with a maximum quantum yield of 10.3%. The overall upconversion capability of 4417 M-1 cm-1 exceeded that of C70 approximately two-fold. Moreover, the bodipy-C70 dyad also exhibited an enhanced optical stability under intense irradiation. All data indicated that the dyad was another ideal photosensitizer for TTA upconversion of perylene in the fullerene derivative family.
