Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been explored for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer, but their antitumor efficacy is limited by excited state quenching and low reactive oxygen species generation efficiency. Herein, we report a simultaneous protonation and metalation strategy to significantly enhance the PDT efficacy of a nanoscale two-dimensional imine-linked porphyrin-COF. The neutral and unmetalated porphyrin-COF (Ptp) and the protonated and metalated porphyrin-COF (Ptp-Fe) were synthesized via imine condensation between 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin and terephthalaldehyde in the absence and presence of ferric chloride, respectively. The presence of ferric chloride generated both doubly protonated and Fe3+-coordinated porphyrin units, which red-shifted and increased the Q-band absorption and disrupted exciton migration to prevent excited state quenching, respectively. Under light irradiation, rapid energy transfer from protonated porphyrins to Fe3+-coordinated porphyrins in Ptp-Fe enabled 1O2 and hydroxyl radical generation via type II and type I PDT processes. Ptp-Fe also catalyzed the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to hydroxy radical through a photoenhanced Fenton-like reaction under slightly acidic conditions and light illumination. As a result, Ptp-Fe-mediated PDT exhibited much higher cytotoxicity than Ptp-mediated PDT on CT26 and 4T1 cancer cells. Ptp-Fe-mediated PDT afforded potent antitumor efficacy in subcutaneous CT26 murine colon cancer and orthotopic 4T1 murine triple-negative breast tumors and prevented metastasis of 4T1 breast cancer to the lungs. This work underscores the role of fine-tuning the molecular structures of COFs in significantly enhancing their PDT efficacy.

Abstract
Ground-state and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations with the long-range-corrected, Coulomb-attenuating CAMY-B3LYP exchange-correlation functional and large, all-electron STO-TZ2P basis sets have been used to examine the potential "inverse hypercorrole" character of meso-p-nitrophenyl-appended dicyanidocobalt(III) corrole dianions. The effect is most dramatic for 5,15-bis(p-nitrophenyl) derivatives, where it manifests itself in intense NIR absorptions. The 10-aryl groups in these complexes play a modulatory role, as evinced by experimental UV-visible spectroscopic and electrochemical data for a series of 5,15-bis(p-nitrophenyl) dicyanidocobalt(III) corroles. TDDFT (CAMY-B3LYP) calculations ascribe these features clearly to a transition from the corrole's a2u-like HOMO (retaining the D4h irrep used for metalloporphyrins) to a nitrophenyl-based LUMO. The outward nature of this transition contrasts with the usual phenyl-to-macrocycle direction of charge transfer transitions in many hyperporphyrins and hypercorroles; thus, the complexes studied are aptly described as inverse hypercorroles.

Abstract
Controlled synthesis of phase-pure metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is essential for their application in technological areas such as catalysis or gas sorption. Yet, knowledge of their phase formation and growth remain rather limited, particularly with respect to species such as water whose vital role in MOF synthesis is often neglected. As a consequence, synthetic protocols often lack reproducibility when multiple MOFs can form from the same metal source and linker, and phase mixtures are obtained with little or no control over their composition. In this work, the role of water in the formation of the Zr-porphyrin MOF disordered PCN-224 (dPCN-224) is investigated. Through X-ray total scattering and scanning electron microscopy, it is observed that dPCN-224 forms via a metal-organic intermediate that consists of Zr6O4(OH)4 clusters linked by tetrakis(4-carboxy-phenyl)porphyrin molecules. Importantly, water is not only essential to the formation of Zr6O4(OH)4 clusters, but it also plays a primary role in dictating the formation kinetics of dPCN-224. This multidisciplinary approach to studying the speciation of dPCN-224 provides a blueprint for how Zr-MOF synthesis protocols can be assessed and their reproducibility increased, and highlights the importance of understanding the role of water as a decisive component in Zr-MOF formation.

Abstract
N-nitrosamines are widespread cancerogenic compounds in human environment, including water, tobacco products, food, and medicinal products. Their presence in pharmaceuticals has recently led to several recalls of important medicines from the market, and strict controls and tight limits of N-nitrosamines are now required. Analytical determination of N-nitrosamines is expensive, laborious, and time-inefficient making development of simpler and faster techniques for their detection crucial. Several reports published in the previous decade have demonstrated that cobalt porphyrin-based chemosensors selectively bind N-nitrosamines, which produces a red shift of characteristic Soret band in UV-Vis spectra. In this study, a thorough re-evaluation of metalloporphyrin/N-nitrosamine adducts was performed using various characterization methods. Herein, we demonstrate that while N-nitrosamines can interact directly with cobalt-based porphyrin complexes, the red shift in UV-Vis spectra is not selectively assured and might also result from the interaction between impurities in N-nitrosamines and porphyrin skeleton or interaction of other functional groups within the N-nitrosamine structure and the metal ion within the porphyrin. We show that pyridine nitrogen is the interacting atom in tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines (TSNAs), as pyridine itself is an active ligand and not the N-nitrosamine moiety. When using Co(II) porphyrins as chemosensors, acidic and basic impurities in dialkyl N-nitrosamines (e.g., formic acid, dimethylamine) are also UV-Vis spectra red shift-producing species. Treatment of these N-nitrosamines with K2CO3 prevents the observed UV-Vis phenomena. These results imply that cobalt-based metalloporphyrins cannot be considered as selective chemosensors for UV-Vis detection of N-nitrosamine moiety-containing species. Therefore, special caution in interpretation of UV-Vis red shift for chemical sensors is suggested.

Abstract
Boron tribromide-mediated demethylation of rhenium-oxo and gold meso-tris(4-methoxyphenyl)corrole and meso-tris(3,5-dimethoxyphenylcorrole), M[TpOMePC] and M[T(3,5-OMe)PC] (M = ReO, Au), have yielded the corresponding phenol- and resorcinol-appended metallocorroles, M[TpOHPC] and M[T(3,5-OH)PC], in good yields. The latter compounds proved insoluble in dichloromethane and chloroform but soluble in THF. The M[T(3,5-OH)PC] derivatives also proved moderately soluble in 0.05 M aqueous KOH. Unlike oxidation-prone aminophenyl-substituted corroles, the phenol- and resorcinol-appended metallocorroles could be readily handled in air without special precautions. The phenolic metallocorroles could be readily alkylated with 4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,11,11,11-heptadecafluoroundecyl iodide ("FtI") to afford the fluorous-tagged metallocorroles M[TpOFtPC] and M[T(3,5-OFt)PC] in > 90% yields. The simplicity of the synthetic protocols promise a wide range of phenolic and fluorous-tagged porphyrin analogues with potential applications to diverse fields such as sensors, catalysis, and photodynamic therapy, among others.

Abstract
The Gouterman four-orbital model conceptualizes porphyrin UV-visible spectra as dominated by four frontier molecular orbitals-two nearly degenerate HOMOs and two exactly degenerate LUMOS under D 4h symmetry. These are well separated from all the other molecular orbitals, and normal spectra involve transitions among these MOs. Unusual spectra occur when additional orbitals appear in this energy range, typically as a consequence of the central coordinated atom. For example, metals with empty d orbitals in a suitable energy range may lead to charge transfer from porphyrin (ligand) to metal, that is, so-called LMCT transitions. Metals with filled p or d orbitals may lead to charge transfer from metal to porphyrin, MLCT transitions. These cases lead to additional peaks and/or significant redshifts in the spectra and were classified as hyperporphyrins by Gouterman. Cases in which spectra are blueshifted were classified as hypsoporphyrins; they are common for relatively electronegative late transition metal porphyrins. Many of the same principles apply to porphyrin analogues, especially corroles. In this Perspective, we focus on two newer classes of hyperporphyrins: one reflecting substituent effects in protonated or deprotonated free-base tetraphenyporphyrins and the other reflecting "noninnocent" interactions between central metal ions and corroles. Hyperporphyrin effects on spectra can be dramatic, yet they can be generated by relatively simple changes and subtle structural variations, such as acid-base reactions or the selection of a central metal ion. These concepts suggest strategies for engineering porphyrin or porphyrinoid dyes for specific applications, especially those requiring far-red or near-infrared absorption or emission.

Abstract
Martin Gouterman (1931-2020) was one of the foundational figures of modern porphyrin science. After completing his Ph.D. at The University of Chicago in 1958, he joined Harvard, where he developed his eponymous four-orbital model. In 1966, he moved to the University of Washington Seattle (UW). Here he came out as gay and helped set up Seattle's first gay rights group, the Dorian Society. At UW, Gouterman accomplished an "optical taxonomy" of the major classes of porphyrin derivatives and pioneered pressure-sensitive paints based on phosphorescent platinum porphyrins to map the partial pressure of oxygen on airplane wings. Revered by his students and co-workers for his brilliant yet gentle advising, Gouterman remains a beacon for a more humane and inclusive scientific enterprise.

Abstract
While the BF3 complexes of meso-tetra(aryl)porphyrins are readily decomposed into their components under aqueous conditions, immobilization of meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (H2TMPyP) on a nanosized polymer (sodium salt of Amberlyst 15, nanoAmbSO3Na) formed a water-stable BF3 complex applicable for efficient aerobic photooxidation of 1,5-dihydroxylnaphthalene and sulfides under green conditions. NanoAmbSO3@H2TMPyP(BF3)2 was characterized by diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermal gravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The catalyst was successfully used for 10 consecutive reactions with no detectable degradation of the complex and decrease in the catalyst activity. NanoAmbSO3@H2TMPyP(BF3)2 was also completely stable toward dissociation to its components under different light conditions in acetonitrile. The singlet oxygen quantum yields φΔ of H2TMPyP, nanoAmbSO3@H2TMPyP, and their molecular complexes with BF3, determined chemically by using 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran, revealed substantially higher values in the case of the heterogenized porphyrin and molecular complex.

Abstract
Synthesis, structural characterization and photophysical properties for a series of new trans-A2B2- and A3B-type ethynyl functionalized meso-phenothiazinyl-phenyl porphyrin derivatives are described. The new compounds displayed the characteristic porphyrin absorption spectra slightly modified by weak auxochromic effects of the substituents and fluorescence emission in the range of 651-659 nm with 11-25% quantum yields. The changes recorded in the UV-vis absorption spectra in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) are consistent with the protonation of the two internal nitrogen atoms of the free-base porphyrin (19 nm bathochromic shift of the strong Soret band and one long wave absorption maxima situated in the range of 665-695 nm). Protonation of the phenothiazine substituents required increased amounts of TFA and produced a distinct hypsochromic shift of the long wave absorption maxima. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations of a porphyrin dication pointed out a saddle-distorted porphyrin ring as the ground-state geometry.

Abstract
The treatment of a dichloromethane solution of 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis-4-chlorophenyl porphyrin, P 1 , with methanolic solutions of each of phenol, p-amino phenol, and p-nitro phenol for just 1 h results in the formation of water-molecule-bound amorphous solids of P 1 . In addition to the straightforward access to the H2O-molecule-coordinated species of P 1 thus produced, the another chief advantage of this synthetic strategy is the successful recoveries of anisole, p-amino anisole, and p-nitro anisole at the end of the reactions. The present work therefore further reports the use of P 1 as an efficient catalyst for the selective O-methylation of phenols using methanol as an environmentally friendly methylating agent. The H2O-bound amorphous solids of P 1 exhibit higher-intensity absorption as well as photoluminescence emission bands in dichloromethane compared with the parent crystalline form. Further, the measurement of the solid-state emission properties of both the crystalline and amorphous forms indicates quenching of fluorescence bands corresponding to amorphous solids in comparison with that of parent crystalline form. The crystalline form of P 1 and the H2O-bound amorphous solids were further studied by scanning electron microscope/transmission electron microscope (SEM/TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and thermal analysis techniques. The results of these studies indicate change in morphological and structural features, surface areas, porosities, and thermal robustness upon core coordination of water molecules with the macrocyclic rings of P 1 .

Abstract
UV-vis spectrophotometric titrations have been carried out on meso-tris(o/m/p-aminophenyl)corrole (H3[o/m/p-TAPC]) and meso-triphenylcorrole (H3[TPC]) in dimethyl sulfoxide with methanesulfonic acid (MSA). Monoprotonation was found to result in hyperporphyrin spectra characterized by new, red-shifted, and intense Q bands. The effect was particularly dramatic for H3[p-TAPC] for which the Q band red-shifted from ∼637 nm for the neutral species to 764 nm in the near-IR for H4[p-TAPC]+. Upon further protonation, the Q band was found to blue-shift back to 687 nm. A simple explanation of the phenomena has been offered in terms of quinonoid resonance forms.

Abstract
Biochemical activities at a membrane interface are affected by local pH/polarity related to membrane lipid properties including lipid dynamics. pH and polarity at the interface are two highly interdependent parameters, depending on various locations from the water-exposed outer surface to the less polar inner surface. The optical response of common pH or polarity probes is affected by both the local pH and polarity; therefore, estimation of these values using two separate probes localized at different interface depths can be erroneous. To estimate interface pH and polarity at an identical interface depth, we synthesized a glucose-pendant porphyrin (GPP) molecule for simultaneous pH and polarity detection by a single optical probe. pH-induced protonation equilibrium and polarity-dependent π-π stacking aggregation for GPP are exploited to measure pH and polarity changes at the 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1'-rac-glycerol) (DMPG) membrane interface during DMPG phase transition. An NMR study confirmed that GPP is located at the interface Stern layer of DMPG large unilamellar vesicle (LUV). Using UV-vis absorption studies with an adapted analysis protocol, we estimated interface pH, or its deviation from the bulk phase value (ΔpH), and the interface polarity simultaneously using the same spectra for sodium dodecyl sulfate micelle and DMPG LUV. During temperature-dependent gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition of DMPG, there was ∼0.5 unit increase in ΔpH from approximately -0.6 to -1.1, with a small increase in the interface dielectric constant from ∼60 to 63. A series of spectroscopic data indicate the utility of GPP for evaluation of local pH/polarity change during lipid phase transition of vesicles.

Abstract
Amyloid fibrils are rigid β-pleated protein aggregates that are connected with series of harmful diseases and at the same time are promising as base for novel nanomaterials. Thus, design of compounds able to inhibit or redirect those aggregates formation is important both for the biomedical aims and for nanotechnology applications. Here, we studied the effect of tetraphenylporphyrins (metal free, their Cu and Pd complexes, and those functionalized by carboxy and amino groups on periphery) on insulin amyloid self-assembling. The strongest impact on insulin aggregation was demonstrated by a metal-free porphyrin bearing four carboxy groups. This compound strongly suppresses insulin aggregation (about 88% reduction in amyloid-sensitive probe emission) inducing formation of fibrils with the length close to this of free insulin (1.7 ± 0.6 μm as compared with 1.4 ± 0.4 μm, respectively) with an essentially reduced tendency to lateral aggregation. Contrarily, the presence of tetraphenylporphyrin containing four amino groups only slightly affects fibrils' morphology and makes weaker impact on insulin aggregation yield (about 44% reduction). This is explained by the ability of aromatic carboxy groups of 5,10,15,20-(tetra-4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin to interact with complementary protein-binding groups and thus stabilize the supramolecular complex. For 5,10,15,20-(tetra-4-aminophenyl)porphyrin, full protonation takes place in acidic medium of protein aggregation reaction; this results in the high positive charge of TPPN4 (equal or close to +6) and hence higher contribution of coulombic repulsion to interaction of TPPN4 with insulin. One more possible mechanism of the lower inhibition effect of TPPN4 as compared with TPPC4 could be the more restricted possibility of the former as compared with the latter to form H bonds with insulin groups. It was also shown that metal-free, Pd-containing, and Cu-containing tetraphenylporphyrins without peripheral substituents make almost the same impact on the protein self-assembling. We suppose this to be due to coordination saturation of these metal atoms.

Abstract
The core N-H units of planar porphyrins are often inaccessible to forming hydrogen-bonding complexes with acceptor molecules. This is due to the fact that the amine moieties are "shielded" by the macrocyclic system, impeding the formation of intermolecular H-bonds. However, methods exist to modulate the tetrapyrrole conformations and to reshape the vector of N-H orientation outwards, thus increasing their availability and reactivity. Strategies include the use of porpho(di)methenes and phlorins (calixphyrins), as well as saddle-distorted porphyrins. The former form cavities due to interruption of the aromatic system. The latter are highly basic systems and capable of binding anions and neutral molecules via N-H⋅⋅⋅X-type H-bonds. This Review discusses the role of porphyrin(oid) ligands in various coordination-type complexes, means to access the core for hydrogen bonding, the concept of conformational control, and emerging applications, such as organocatalysis and sensors.

Abstract
We present the synthesis and photophysical characterization of a water stable PCN-223(freebase) metal organic framework (MOF) constructed from meso-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP). The photophysical properties of the synthesized crystalline material were studied using a wide range of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Quenching experiments performed on TCPP and PCN-223 demonstrated that the extent and the rate of quenching in the MOF is significantly higher than the monomeric ligand. Based on these results, we propose that upon photo-excitation, the singlet excitation energy migrates across neutral TCPP linkers until it is quenched by a N-protonated TCPP linker. The N-protonated linkers act as trap states that deactivate the excited state to the ground state. Variable temperature measurements aided in understanding the mechanism of singlet-singlet energy transfer in the PCN-223 MOF. The rate of energy transfer and the total exciton hopping distance in PCN-223 were calculated in order to quantify the energy transfer characteristics of PCN-223. Nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy was used to study the triplet excited state photophysics in both the free ligand and PCN-223 MOF. Furthermore, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy was employed to get a better understanding of the photophysical processes taking place in the ligand and MOF on ultrafast timescales. Efficient energy transfer (Förster radius = 54.5 Å) accompanied with long distance exciton hopping (173 Å) was obtained for the PCN-223 MOF.

Abstract
The addition of arylethynyl groups to the porphyrin macrocycle represents an effective strategy with which to enhance the light-harvesting properties of porphyrins. We now extend this modification to arylethynyl porphyrins with two or four [Formula: see text]-hydroxyphenyl substituents. Arylethynyl porphyrins bearing four, but not two, [Formula: see text]-hydroxyphenyl substituents show evidence of aggregation under acidic conditions. Under basic conditions, deprotonation of the peripheral hydroxyphenyl substituents results in substantially red-shifted spectral features and enhanced absorption in the Q-band region. When the hydroxyphenyl groups are appended to the porphyrin macrocylce via the ethynyl spacers, the spectral shifts observed upon deprotonation are significantly enhanced relative to those observed for hydroxyphenylporphyrins, highlighting the role of expanded conjugation in altering porphyrin photophysics.

A series of tetraphenyl meso-substituted porphyrins with either p-amino or p-carboxy substituents has been studied as dyes for standard dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The porphyrins with greater numbers of amino groups generally show greater efficiency, primarily due to higher photocurrents; open-circuit voltage and fill factors are comparable. The most efficient sensitizer was the trans disubstituted zinc porphyrin, with an overall solar energy conversion efficiency of 5.66%, slightly higher than the triamino zinc porphyrin at 5.18%. The improved efficiency is attributed to the well known push–pull effect in porphyrinsensitized DSSCs with electrondonating groups opposite to the electronwithdrawing anchoring (carboxy) groups. It is suggested that porphyrin derivatives with cis diaminophenyl groups show somewhat diminished efficiency due to difficulties with regeneration of the dye from its oxidized form.
