Abstract
On the basis of steric hindrance, one carbonyl group in a diketone can be reduced in a regioselective manner, with high enantioselectivity. The methodology can be extended to ketones with varied length of hydrocarbon chain spacing, and the products can be converted by oxidation to hydroxy esters or lactones without loss of enantiopurity.

Abstract
The stereoselective total synthesis of structure 1 assigned to the macrolide natural product neaumycin B is reported in a 2.3% overall yield on 90 mg scale. The synthesis features a gram-scale nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling/spiroketalization tactic to construct the spiroketal core of neaumycin B. The stereostructures of the C3-C6, C8-C14, and C20-C41 segments of synthetic neaumycin B were unambiguously verified by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The dinoflagellate-derived polyether prorocentin is a co-metabolite of the archetypical serine/threonine phosphatase inhibitor okadaic acid. Whereas a structural relationship cannot be missed and a biosynthetic link was proposed, it is currently unknown whether there is any parallel in the bioactivity profile of these natural products. However, it was insinuated in the past that the structure assigned to prorocentin might need to be revised. Indeed, re-examination of the published spectra cast doubts as to the constitution of the fused/spirotricyclic BCD-ring system in the core. To clarify this issue, a flexible synthesis blueprint was devised that allowed us to obtain the originally proposed structure as well as the most plausible amended structure. The key to success was late-stage gold-catalyzed spirocyclization reactions that furnished the isomeric central segments with excellent selectivity. The lexicon of catalytic transformations used to make the required cyclization precursors comprised a titanium-mediated ester methylenation/metathesis cascade, a rare example of a gold-catalyzed allylic substitution, and chain extensions via organocatalytic asymmetric aldehyde propargylation. A wing sector to be attached to the isomeric cores was obtained by Krische allylation, followed by a superbly selective cobalt-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of the resulting di-unsaturated alcohol with the formation of a 2,5-trans-disubstituted tetrahydrofuran; the remaining terminal alkene was elaborated into an appropriate handle for fragment coupling by platinum-catalyzed asymmetric diboration/oxidation. The assembly of the different building blocks to the envisaged isomeric target compounds proved that the structure of prorocentin needs to be revised as disclosed herein.

Abstract
Asymmetric hydrogenation of diaryl 1,4-diketones was achieved by using trans-RuCl2[(S)-BINAP)][(S)-Daipen] as the catalyst and the reaction gave rise to excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivities (up to >99% ee and de). This procedure provides a convenient and efficient synthetic method for chiral 1,4-diarylbutane-1,4-diols, which are important intermediates for a variety of chiral auxiliaries and ligands.

Abstract
Recursive anion-mediated activation of o-bis-ynones sets off a Michael addition-aldol reaction-dehydrative rearrangement cascade, leading to the one-pot synthesis of 1-indenones via orthogonal interplay between the two ortho-ynone moieties. Repeating the recursive anion engagement with the 1-indenones unfolded access to a functionally embellished cyclopenta[a]inden-8(2H)-one core and its spiroannulated analogues either directly or stepwise through tandem 1,6-Michael-type addition-6π electrocyclization and an in situ oxidation sequence.

Abstract
The unusual α-amino, β-hydroxy acid MeBmt is a key structural feature of cyclosporin A, an important naturally occurring immunosuppressant and antiviral agent. We present a convergent synthesis of MeBmt which relies on new aspects of dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) to establish simultaneously the chirality at C(2) and C(3). We also show that this route is applicable to the synthesis of other derivatives.

Abstract
A direct N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis of maleimides with alkyl aldehydes is established for the synthesis of 3-acylsuccinimides. The first dynamic kinetic resolution of 3-acylsuccinimides is accomplished through asymmetric transfer hydrogenation. These two catalytic methodologies are utilized for the synthesis of each enantiomer of trans-paraconic acids in three steps and cis-paraconic acids in four steps with good yields and high stereoselectivities. This stereodivergent synthetic methodology is applied for the synthesis of seven bioactive paraconic acid natural products.

transfer hydrogenation via dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR–ATH)
of α,β-dehydro-α-acetamido and α-acetamido
benzocyclic ketones to ent-trans-β-amido alcohols is disclosed employing a new ansa-Ru(II) complex of an enantiomerically pure syn-N,N-ligand, i.e. ent-syn-ULTAM-(CH2)3Ph. DFT calculations
of the transition state structures revealed an atypical two-pronged
substrate attractive stabilization engaging the commonly encountered
CH/π electrostatic interaction and a new additional O=S=O···HNAc

Abstract
A green and efficient iridium-catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of alkynyl ketones to chiral propargylic alcohols has been developed. By using sodium formate and ethanol as hydrogen sources, a series of alkynyl ketones were hydrogenated by chiral spiro iridium catalyst ( S)-1b to provide optically active chiral propargylic alcohols with up to 98% ee under base-free conditions. This protocol provides a practical and sustainable method for the preparation of optically active propargylic alcohols.

Abstract
Alkenyltin derivatives flanked by a hydroxyl group are subject to methoxycarbonylation when treated with catalytic amounts of Pd(OAc)2 and Ph3As in MeOH under a CO atmosphere; key to success is the use of 1,4-benzoquinone as a stoichiometric oxidant in combination with trifluoroacetic acid as a cocatalyst. The acid lowers the LUMO of the quinone and likely marshals the critical assembly of the substrates. Under the optimized conditions, competing proto-destannation is marginal; the method proved compatible with various (acid sensitive) functional groups and was applied to a short formal total synthesis of the antibiotic tubelactomicin A.

Abstract
Asymmetric transfer hydrogenation was applied to a wide range of racemic aryl α-alkoxy-β-ketoesters in the presence of well-defined, commercially available, chiral catalyst Ru(II) -(N-p-toluenesulfonyl-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine) and a 5:2 mixture of formic acid and triethylamine as the hydrogen source. Under these conditions, dynamic kinetic resolution was efficiently promoted to provide the corresponding syn α-alkoxy-β-hydroxyesters derived from substituted aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes with a high level of diastereoselectivity (diastereomeric ratio (d.r.)>99:1) and an almost perfect enantioselectivity (enantiomeric excess (ee)>99 %). Additionally, after extensive screening of the reaction conditions, the use of Ru(II) - and Rh(III) -tethered precatalysts extended this process to more-challenging substrates that bore alkenyl-, alkynyl-, and alkyl substituents to provide the corresponding syn α-alkoxy-β-hydroxyesters with excellent enantiocontrol (up to 99 % ee) and good to perfect diastereocontrol (d.r.>99:1). Lastly, the synthetic utility of the present protocol was demonstrated by application to the asymmetric synthesis of chiral ester ethyl (2S)-2-ethoxy-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanoate, which is an important pharmacophore in a number of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α/γ dual agonist advanced drug candidates used for the treatment of type-II diabetes.

Abstract
The regioselective conversion of propargylic alcohols into previously unreported α,α-diiodo-β-hydroxyketones was achieved by treatment with N-iodosuccinimide in the presence of a gold catalyst. The corresponding α,α-dichloro-β-hydroxyketones were obtained by treatment with trichloroisocyanuric acid in the absence of a catalyst. The latter reaction can be extended to other alkynols. These transformations can be used to prepare potentially useful halogenated building blocks. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction involves participation of the acetonitrile solvent in the formation of a 5-halo-1,3-oxazine intermediate.

Abstract
The asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of imines catalyzed by the Noyori-Ikariya [RuCl(η6-arene)(N-arylsulfonyl-DPEN)] (DPEN=1,2-diphenylethylene-1,2-diamine) half-sandwich complexes is a research topic that is still being intensively developed. This article focuses on selected aspects of this catalytic system. First, a great deal of attention is devoted to the N-arylsulfonyl moiety of the catalysts in terms of its interaction with protonated imines (substrates) and amines (components of the hydrogen-donor mixture). The second part is oriented toward the role of the η6-coordinated arene. The final part concerns the imine substrate structural modifications and their importance in connection with ATH. Throughout the text, the summary of known findings is complemented with newly-presented ones, which have been approached both experimentally and computationally.
