Abstract
Red-to-near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores are highly desirable in bio-imaging studies with advantages of high tissue penetration ability and less interference from auto-fluorescence. However, their preparation usually requires tedious synthetic procedures, which seriously restrict their applications. Thus, the direct preparation of red-to-NIR fluorophores from easily available substrates is highly desirable. Compared with the conventional closed-shell fluorophores, radical cations feature a large red-shift absorption, but only very few of them are fluorescent and they suffer from high instability. Herein, we proposed a convenient strategy for the preparation of red-to-NIR fluorophores through air oxidation of electron-rich 2,5-dimethylpyrroles to in situ generate red-to-NIR emissive radical cations, which can be stabilized by adsorption on silica gel-coated thin layer chromatography (TLC) plates or encapsulated in cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]). The radical cations derived from pyrroles were verified using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, theoretical calculations and one-electron oxidation experiments. Moreover, the pyrrole-derived radical cations encapsulated in CB[7] can be used for mitochondrial imaging in living cells with high specificity and in vivo imaging with long-term stability. The easily available pyrrole-derived radical cations with red-to-NIR emission are thus promising for biomedical applications.

Abstract
The multicenter (pancake) bonding between cation-radicals of tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene, TMTSF+˙, tetramethyltetrathiafulvalene, TMTTF+˙, and bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene, ET+,˙ was compared to that of tetrathiafulvalene, TTF+˙. To minimize counter-ion effects, the cation-radical salts with weakly coordinating anions (WCA), tetrakis(3,5-trifluoromethylphenyl)borate, dodecamethylcarborane and hexabromocarborane were prepared. Solid-state (X-ray and EPR) measurements revealed diamagnetic π-dimers in the TMTSF and ET salts and the separate monomers in the TTF salts with all WCAs, while TMTTF existed as a dimer in one and a monomer in two salts. The variable-temperature UV-Vis studies of these salts in solution showed that the thermodynamics of formation of the π-bonded dimers of TMTTF+˙ was close to that of TTF+˙, while TMTSF+˙ and ET+˙ showed a higher propensity for π-dimerization. These data indicated that the replacement of sulfur with heavier selenium or insertion of ethylenedithia-substituents into the TTF core increases the π-dimers' stability. Yet, computational analysis indicated that the weakly covalent component of π-bonding decreases in the order TTF > TMTTF > TMTSF > ET. The higher stability of the π-dimers of TMTSF+˙ and ET+˙ cation-radicals was related to a decrease of the electrostatic repulsion between cationic counter-parts and an increase of dispersion components in these associations.

Abstract
Three 1 N‐phenyl nitronyl nitroxide (NN) 4‐substituted dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]pyrrole (DTP) derivatives with R1=4‐phenyl‐, 4H‐, and 4‐methylthiothiophenyl‐ (R12DTP‐Ph‐NN, R1=H, Ph and MeSTh) were designed, synthesized and characterized. The electrochemical properties were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). All the molecules exhibited two main oxidation peaks, first for radical cation and next for dication formation. The cation and dication formation were also confirmed by UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy for Ph2DTP‐Ph‐NN and MeSTh2DTP‐Ph‐NN titrated with tris(4‐bromophenyl)aminiumhexachloroantimonate (magic blue). In addition, the cation and dication formation were verified by EPR spectroscopy. Finally, the exchange interactions (J/kB) of NN and radical cation were calculated by DFT studies.

Abstract
Herein, we demonstrate that the dimerization behavior of amine-substituted dicyanomethyl radicals can be switched from σ- to π-dimerization simply by varying the electron-donating substituents. For dicyanomethyl radicals with a 4,4'-ditolylamine (DT. ) or a phenothiazine (PT. ) substituent, the monomeric radical form and the corresponding dimer connected by a reversible C-C bond (σ-dimer) are in equilibrium in solution. On the other hand, the radical with the julolidine skeleton (JD. ) does not undergo σ-dimerization and was isolated as a stable radical in spite of the absence of bulky protecting groups. X-ray single-crystal analysis revealed that JD. forms the π-dimer in the crystalline state, and variable-temperature spectroscopy showed that JD. is in equilibrium with the π-dimer in toluene solution. DFT calculations point to the importance of electrostatic interactions as a driving force for the π-dimerization of JD. because of its polarized structure.

Abstract
Co-oligomers composed of two 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) units and two or three 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT) units, i.e., 2E2PEt and 2E3PEt, were newly synthesized together with the ProDOT trimer 3PMe. On the basis of cyclic voltammetry, the gaps between the first and second oxidation potentials (ΔE1-2) of 2E2PEt and 2E3PEt were found to be larger than that of the previously synthesized ProDOT tetramer 4PHex. These co-oligomers gave the fairly stable radical cations 2E2PEt•+ and 2E3PEt•+ by chemical oxidation with AgSbF6. The disproportionation of 2E2PEt•+ and 2E3PEt•+ into neutral and dicationic species, which was observed for 4PHex•+, was inhibited in accord with the larger ΔE1-2. Additionally, the formation of the π-dimers (3PMe)22+, (2E2PEt)22+, and (2E3PE)22+ was clearly observed in dichloromethane solution at low temperatures with UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the π-dimerization enthalpies of 2E2PEt•+ and 2E3PEt•+ were greater than that of 3PMe•+, suggesting the formation of fully π-contacted structures. The structures of the π-dimers were optimized at the B97D3 method, and the calculated absorption spectra of the π-dimers obtained using TD-DFT methods were in reasonable agreement with the observed ones, supporting the reliability of the calculated structures.
