Abstract
The synthesis of six N,N'-substituted thiourea ligands (L1a-L3b) was achieved in two steps. A corresponding extensive series of Cu(I), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes (1-24) with varying formulations were synthesised from these ligands by the reaction of a 1 : 1 or a 1 : 2 mixture of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) perchlorate or chloride salts. Complexes 1-24 have been comprehensively characterised by mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, UV-vis., IR, and 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopies where applicable. The X-ray crystal structures were obtained for eight examples: [(L1a)2Cu]ClO4 (1), [(L1c)2Zn](ClO4)2 (4), [(L2a)2Cu]ClO4 (6), [(L2c)2Ni](ClO4)2 (7), [(L1b)2Cu](ClO4) (15), [(L1b)CuCl] (16), [(L4)2CuCl2] (19) and [(L3b)CuClO4] (21). These studies reveal that L1c and L2c represent ligands that have undergone cleavage during reaction with the metal salt; L4 represents an intramolecular rearrangement (via a Hugershoff reaction) of L2b; and in most cases Cu(II) is reduced to Cu(I) during the ligand reaction. The X-ray crystal structures also reveal that 1, 4, 6, 15 and 16 are monometallic species in the solid state; that Cu(I) in 1, 6, 15 and 16 and Zn(II) in 4 are arranged in a distorted tetrahedral geometry; that Cu(I) in 21 adopts a trigonal planar geometry; and that in 7 and 19 the Ni(II) and Cu(II) centres, respectively, possess square planar geometry. Preliminary studies on the biological activity (using the Malaria Sybr Green I Fluorescence assay) of the thiourea containing complexes suggests that the d10 complexes, and increased ligand stoichiometries, may afford higher potency.

Abstract
The use of polymerizable hosts in anion imprinting has led to powerful receptors with high oxyanion affinity and specificity in both aqueous and non-aqueous environments. As demonstrated in previous reports, a carefully tuned combination of orthogonally interacting binding groups, for example, positively charged and neutral hydrogen bonding monomers, allows receptors to be constructed for use in either organic or aqueous environments, in spite of the polymer being prepared in non-competitive solvent systems. We here report on a detailed experimental design of phenylphosphonic and benzoic acid-imprinted polymer libraries prepared using either urea- or thiourea-based host monomers in the presence or absence of cationic comonomers for charge-assisted anion recognition. A comparison of hydrophobic and hydrophilic crosslinking monomers allowed optimum conditions to be identified for oxyanion binding in non-aqueous, fully aqueous, or high-salt media. This showed that recognition improved with the water content for thiourea-based molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) based on hydrophobic EGDMA with an opposite behavior shown by the polymers prepared using the more hydrophilic crosslinker PETA. While the affinity of thiourea-based MIPs increased with the water content, the opposite was observed for the oxourea counterparts. Binding to the latter could however be enhanced by raising the pH or by the introduction of cationic amine- or Na+-complexing crown ether-based comonomers. Use of high-salt media as expected suppressed the amine-based charge assistance, whereas it enhanced the effect of the crown ether function. Use of the optimized receptors for removing the ubiquitous pesticide glyphosate from urine finally demonstrated their practical utility.

Abstract
![]()
The
design of artificial oxyanion receptors with switchable ion
preference is a challenging goal in host–guest chemistry. We
here report on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with an external
phospho-sulpho switch driven by small molecule modifiers. The polymers
were prepared by hydrogen bond-mediated imprinting of the mono- or
dianions of phenyl phosphonic acid (PPA), phenyl sulfonic acid (PSA),
and benzoic acid (BA) using N-3,5-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-phenyl-Ń-4-vinylphenyl urea (1) as the functional
host monomer. The interaction mode between the functional monomer
and the monoanions was elucidated by 1H NMR titrations
and 1H–1H NMR NOESY supported by molecular
dynamic simulation, which confirmed the presence of high-order complexes.
PPA imprinted polymers bound PPA with an equilibrium constant Keq = 1.8 × 105 M–1 in acetonitrile (0.1% 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidine) and inorganic
HPO42– and SO42– with Keq = 2.9 × 103 M–1 and 4.5 × 103 M–1, respectively, in aqueous buffer. Moreover, the chromatographic
retentivity of phosphonate versus sulfonate was shown to be completely
switched on this polymer when changing from a basic to an acidic modifier.
Mechanistic insights into this system were obtained from kinetic investigations
and DSC-, MALDI-TOF-MS-, 1H NMR-studies of linear polymers
prepared in the presence of template. The results suggest the formation
of template induced 1–1 diad repeats in the polymer main chain
shedding unique light on the relative contributions of configurational
and conformational imprinting.

Abstract
A series of benzoylguanidinium salts was prepared and the changes in UV/Vis spectra, triggered by the presence of anions, were investigated. All compounds undergo deprotonation with basic anions like dihydrogenphosphate and acetate in acetonitrile. The most pronounced spectral changes were obtained by deprotonation of N1 -benzoyl-N3 -(p-nitrophenyl) guanidinium chloride which shows the naked-eye visible color change from colorless to yellow. Measured pKa (BH+ ) in acetonitrile ranges from 12-16, which is comparable to the pyridinium cations. The proton transfer equilibria were also tested in acetonitrile/water mixture where all but the most acidic derivatives showed pKa (BH+ ) of 4-6 units which corresponds to apparent association constants of 104 -106 dm3 mol-1 . UV/Vis spectra of neutral and protonated forms were modelled by the TD-DFT approach using CAM-B3LYP and PBE0 functionals and compared to CC2 results. In the case of CAM-B3LYP, a parameter ω, defining amount of long-range exchange correction, was varied to achieve the best agreement with the experimental spectra. The optimized ω parameters are 0.10 a0 -1 for neutral benzoylguanidines and 0.20 a0 -1 for neutral nitrobenzoyl and protonated systems. The larger ω parameter in the latter is ascribed to more pronounced charge transfer character of the HOMO-LUMO transition - the one responsible for the lowest energy absorption band.

Abstract
The synthesis of unnatural amino acids with small side-chain functionalities usable for further transformations is highly demanding for the expansion of the genetic code and other possible biotechnological applications. To this end, we wanted to report the utility of an unexplored unnatural amino acid, isothiocyanyl alanine (NCSAla = Ita), for the synthesis of another class of unnatural amino acids, thioureayl alanines (TUAla = Tua). The synthesis of a third class of unnatural amino acids, amino tetrazolyl alanines (ATzAla = Ata), in a very good yield was subsequently achieved utilizing thioureayl alanines. Thus, a variety of aliphatic- and aromatic-substituted thioureayl alanines and aromatic-substituted amino tetrazolyl alanines were successfully synthesized in good to excellent yields. The photophysical properties of three of the fluorescent unnatural amino acids from two classes were also studied and presented herein.

Remarkable hexafunctional anion receptor with operational urea-based inner cleft and thiourea-based outer cleft: Novel design with high-efficiency for sulfate binding. Sci Rep 2017; 7:6032. Abstract
The recognition of anions by designed receptors has attracted much attention in recent days. In particular, the selective binding of sulfate with artificial receptors is important because of its relevance to many biological and environmental applications. However, the development of organized molecular receptors with high-efficiency for sulfate binding still remains a significant challenge. We report a novel para-phenylene-bridged hexafunctional tripodal receptor that contains a urea-based inner cleft and a thiourea-based outer cleft, providing perfect sites for step-wise binding of two anions within a single cavity. The new receptor was synthesized in a three-step process, and was investigated for its anion binding properties by 1H NMR titrations, 2D NOESY experiments and computational studies. As indicated by solution binding studies, the receptor selectively binds sulfate over other oxoanions, forming a 1:2 stoichiometric complex that is stabilized via strong H-bonding interactions. High-level DFT calculations reveal that the receptor, owing to the enhanced H-bonding ability of thiourea groups, initially encapsulates one sulfate in its thiourea-based outer cleft, followed by a second encapsulation in its urea-based inner cleft. Such a functionalized receptor with the unique combination of urea-based cleft and thiourea-based cleft in a single receptor has not been reported previously.

Abstract
The molecular structure of the title compound, C13H18N4O3S, (systematic name: ethyl N-{2-[4-(dimethylamino)benzoyl]hydrazinethiocarbonyl}carbamate) is stabilized by intramolecular N—H⋯O=C hydrogen bonding arranged in an S(6) graph-set motif. In the crystal, inversion dimers connected via intermolecular N—H⋯S=C hydrogen bonds [R22(8) graph-set motif] form sheets parallel to the (21) plane. Dimers are also formed by the molecules via weak intermolecular N—H⋯S=C hydrogen bonds [R22(10) graph-set motif] connecting the sheets.

Abstract
Green and yellow-emitting 1,6- and 1,8-bis(phenylethynyl) pyrenes (dyes 7, 8, 9, and 10) with different intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) feature were synthesized and the effect of ICT on the photophysical properties of these derivatives were studied by UV-vis absorption spectra, fluorescence emission spectra, and DFT/TDDFT calculations. For the dyes with electron-pushing group (e.g., -dimethylamino, dye 8 and dye 10), structureless and solvent polarity-sensitive fluorescence emission spectra were observed. Conversely, dye with electron-withdrawing group (e.g., -CN, dye 7) shows structured and solvent polarity-independent emission spectra. OFF-ON fluorescent thiol probes 11 and 12 with 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl protected ethynylpyrene fluorophore were designed based on DFT/TDDFT calculations, which predicts dark state (S(1)) for these thiol probes (e.g., oscillator strength f = 0.0086 for S(1)<--S(0) transition of the probe 11). This dark state is induced by the ICT effect with ethynylated pyrene fluorophore as electron donor and 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl unit as electron acceptor. Cleavage of the 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl unit by thiol releases the free fluorophore, for which the lowest-lying excited state S(1) is no longer a dark state, but an emissive state (f = 0.9776 for S(1)<--S(0) transition). These theoretical predictions on the photophysical properties of the molecular probes were fully proved by experimental results. Our results demonstrated that the fluorescence OFF-ON switching of this kind of thiol probe is due to the termination of the ICT effect (which quenches the emission, by a dark S(1) state) by cleavage of the 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl unit (as acceptor of ICT effect) with thiols, not the re-establishment of the D-pi-A feature of the fluorophore. These investigation on the pyrene derived green-emitting fluorophores and the DFT/TDDFT calculation aided probe design suggest that future application of these results may prove useful toward the rational design of fluorophores or fluorescent probes with predetermined photophysical properties.

Abstract
Fluoride anion recognition is attracting a mounting interest in the scientific community due to its duplicitous nature. It is a useful chemical for many industrial applications, and it has been used in human diet, but, recently it has been accused for several human pathologies. Here we describe the ample panorama of different approaches the chemists world-wide have employed to face the challenge of fluoride binding, and we outline some of the research which in our view can contribute to the development of this field, especially when fluoride binding has to be achieved in highly competitive protic solvents and water.
