Repulsive Interaction Can Be a Key Design Element of Molecular Rotary Motors

Syntheses, Structures, and Spectroscopic Properties of 1,10-Phenanthroline-Based Macrocycles Threaded by PtC8 Pt, PtC12 Pt, and PtC16 Pt Axles: Metal-Capped Rotaxanes as Insulated Molecular Wires

The platinum polyynyl complexes trans-(C₆ F₅ )(p-tol₃ P)₂ Pt(C≡C)_n/2 H undergo oxidative homocoupling (O₂ , CuCl/TMEDA) to diplatinum polyynediyl complexes trans, trans-(C₆ F₅ )(p-tol₃ P)₂ Pt(C≡C)_n Pt(Pp-tol₃ )₂ (C₆ F₅ ) (n=4, 2; 6, 5; 8, 8; 92-97 %) as reported previously. When related reactions are conducted in the presence of CuI adducts of the 1,10-phenanthroline-based macrocycles 2,9-(1,10-phenanthrolinediyl)(p-C₆ H₄ O(CH₂ )₆ O)₂ (1,3-C₆ H₄ ) (10, 33-membered) or 2,9-(1,10-phenanthrolinediyl)(p-C₆ H₄ O(CH₂ )₆ O)₂ (2,7-naphthalenediyl) (11, 35-membered), excess K₂ CO₃ , and I₂ (oxidant), rotaxanes are isolated that feature a Pt(C≡C)_n Pt axle that has been threaded through the macrocycle (2⋅10, 9 %; 5⋅10, 41 %; 5⋅11, 28 %; 8⋅10, 12 %; 8⋅11, 9 %). Their crystal structures are determined and analyzed in detail, particularly with respect to geometric perturbations and the degree of steric sp carbon chain insulation. NMR spectra show a number of shielding effects. UV/Vis spectra do not indicate significant electronic interactions between the Pt(C≡C)_n Pt axles and macrocycles, although cyclic voltammetry data suggest rapid reactions following oxidation.

High binding yet accelerated guest rotation within a cucurbit[7]uril complex. Toward paramagnetic gyroscopes and rolling nanomachines

The (15-oxo-3,7,11-triazadispiro[5.1.5.3]hexadec-7-yl)oxidanyl, a bis-spiropiperidinium nitroxide derived from TEMPONE, can be included in cucurbit[7]uril to form a strong (K(a)∼ 2 × 10(5) M(-1)) CB[7]@bPTO complex. EPR and MS spectra, DFT calculations, and unparalleled increased resistance (a factor of ∼10(3)) toward ascorbic acid reduction show evidence of deep inclusion of bPTO inside CB[7]. The unusual shape of the CB[7]@bPTO EPR spectrum can be explained by an anisotropic Brownian rotational diffusion, the global tumbling of the complex being slower than rotation of bPTO around its "long molecular axis" inside CB[7]. The CB[7] (stator) with the encapsulated bPTO (rotator) behaves as a supramolecular paramagnetic rotor with increased rotational speed of the rotator that has great potential for advanced nanoscale machines requiring wheels such as cucurbiturils with virtually no friction between the wheel and the axle for optimum wheel rotation (i.e. nanopulleys and nanocars).

Substitution effect and effect of axle's flexibility at (pseudo-)rotaxanes

This study investigates the effect of substitution with different functional groups and of molecular flexibility by changing within the axle from a single C-C bond to a double C=C bond. Therefore, we present static quantum chemical calculations at the dispersion-corrected density functional level (DFT-D3) for several Leigh-type rotaxanes. The calculated crystal structure is in close agreement with the experimental X-ray data. Compared to a stiffer axle, a more flexible one results in a stronger binding by 1-3 kcal/mol. Alterations of the binding energy in the range of 5 kcal/mol could be achieved by substitution with different functional groups. The hydrogen bond geometry between the isophtalic unit and the carbonyl oxygen atoms of the axle exhibited distances in the range of 2.1 to 2.4 Å for six contact points, which shows that not solely but to a large amount the circumstances in the investigated rotaxanes are governed by hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the complex with the more flexible axle is usually more unsymmetrical than the one with the stiff axle. The opposite is observed for the experimentally investigated axle with the four phenyl stoppers. Furthermore, we considered an implicit continuum solvation model and found that the complex binding is weakened by approximately 10 kcal/mol, and hydrogen bonds are slightly shortened (by up to 0.2 Å).

Cucurbit[7]uril host-guest complexes and [2]pseudorotaxanes with N-methylpiperidinium, N-methylpyrrolidinium, and N-methylmorpholinium cations in aqueous solution

The formations of host-guest complexes between cucurbit[7]uril and a series of N-substituted N-methylpiperidinium, N-methylpyrrolidinium, and N-methylmorpholinium cations in aqueous solution have been investigated using (1)H NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Dications comprising the N-methylheterocyclic head groups, bridged by a decamethylene chain, form sequential 1 : 1 ([2]pseudorotaxanes) and 2 : 1 host-guest complexes with cucurbit[7]uril. The cucurbituril initially resides over the decamethylene chain, however with further additions of the host molecule a translocation of the hosts to the cationic N-heterocyclic head groups occurs. The order of the magnitude of the cucurbituril host-guest stability constants, determined by competitive (1)H NMR binding experiments, follows the trend in the hydrophobicity of the quaternary ammonium cations.

Three-dimensional mapping of microenvironmental control of methyl rotational barriers

Sterical (van der Waals-induced) rotational barriers of methyl groups are investigated theoretically, using ab initio and empirical force field calculations, for various three-dimensional microenvironmental conditions around the methyl group rotator of a model neopentane molecule. The destabilization (reducing methyl rotational barriers) or stabilization (increasing methyl rotational barriers) of the staggered conformation of the methyl rotator depends on a combination of microenvironmental contributions from (i) the number of atoms around the rotator, (ii) the distance between the rotator and the microenvironmental atoms, and (iii) the dihedral angle between the stator, rotator, and molecular environment around the rotator. These geometrical criteria combine their respective effects in a linearly additive fashion, with no apparent cooperative effects, and their combination in space around a rotator may increase, decrease, or leave the rotator's rotational barrier unmodified. This is exemplified in a geometrical analysis of the alanine dipeptide crystal where microenvironmental effects on methyl rotators' barrier of rotation fit the geometrical mapping described in the neopentane model.
