Competitive Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding in Oligo(ethylene oxide) Substituted Quadruple Hydrogen Bonded Systems

Synthesis of Novel (Meth)acrylates with Variable Hydrogen Bond Interaction and Their Application in a Clear Viscoelastic Film

Clear viscoelastic films (CVFs) have many applications in the display industry. Acrylic monomers containing a hydrogen bond (H-monomer) are often used in the preparation of CVF to increase the cohesion and form favorable interactions with the display substrate. Common H-monomers face a counterbalance between the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the hydrogen-bonding association constant (Ka). Strong hydrogen bonding often leads to a high Tg and high modulus, which are unfavorable in certain applications such as foldable display. To solve these problems, four types of hydrogen-bonding (meth)acrylic monomers (carbamate acrylate, carbamate methacrylate, urea acrylate, and urea methacrylate) with different Ka and Tg were readily synthesized. Among them, urea acrylates displayed the highest Ka while still maintaining moderate Tg. These H-monomers were copolymerized with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) and cross-linked to obtain a series of copolymers (H-copolymers) as pressure-sensitive adhesives. After the characterization of rheology, optics, and peel adhesion, urea-acrylic H-copolymers showed the best overall performance by combining great optical property (>98% in transmittance, < 1% in haze) and mechanical performance (8-12 N/25 mm in peel adhesion, 84-92% in creep recovery). This work provides a new path to prepare acrylic CVF for flexible display application.

Recastable assemblies of carbon dots into mechanically robust macroscopic materials

Assembly of nanoparticles into macroscopic materials with mechanical robustness, green processability, and recastable ability is an important and challenging task in materials science and nanotechnology. As an emerging nanoparticle with superior properties, macroscopic materials assembled from carbon dots will inherit their properties and further offer collective properties; however, macroscopic materials assembled from carbon dots solely remain unexplored. Here we report macroscopic films assembled from carbon dots modified by ureido pyrimidinone. These films show tunable fluorescence inherited from carbon dots. More importantly, these films exhibit collective properties including self-healing, re-castability, and superior mechanical properties, with Young's modulus over 490 MPa and breaking strength over 30 MPa. The macroscopic films maintain original mechanical properties after several cycles of recasting. Through scratch healing and welding experiments, these films show good self-healing properties under mild conditions. Moreover, the molecular dynamics simulation reveals that the interplay of interparticle and intraparticle hydrogen bonding controls mechanical properties of macroscopic films. Notably, these films are processed into diverse shapes by an eco-friendly hydrosetting method. The methodology and results in this work shed light on the exploration of functional macroscopic materials assembled from nanoparticles and will accelerate innovative developments of nanomaterials in practical applications.

A versatile way for the synthesis of monomethylamines by reduction of N-substituted carbonylimidazoles with the NaBH4/I2 system

An economical and versatile protocol for the one-pot synthesis of monomethylamines by reduction of N-substituted carbonylimidazoles with NaBH₄/I₂ in THF at reflux temperature is described. This method used no special catalyst and various monomethylamines can be easily obtained in moderate to good yields from a wide range of raw materials including amines (primary amines and secondary amines), carboxylic acids and isocyanates. Besides, an interesting reduction selectivity was observed. Exploration of the reaction process shows that it undergoes a two-step pathway via a formamide intermediate and the reduction of the formamide intermediate to monomethylamine as the rate-determining step. This work can contribute significantly expanding the applications of N-substituted carbonylimidazoles.

A Supramolecular Hydrogel Enabled by the Synergy of Hydrophobic Interaction and Quadruple Hydrogen Bonding

The increasing preference for minimally invasive surgery requires novel soft materials that are injectable, with rapid self-healing abilities, and biocompatible. Here, by utilizing the synergetic effect of hydrophobic interaction and quadruple hydrogen bonding, an injectable supramolecular hydrogel with excellent self-healing ability was synthesized. A unique ABA triblock copolymer was designed containing a central poly(ethylene oxide) block and terminal poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) block, with ureido pyrimidinone (UPy) moieties randomly incorporated (termed MA-UPy-PEO-UPy-MA). The PMMA block could offer a hydrophobic microenvironment for UPy moieties in water and thus boost the corresponding quadruple hydrogen bonding interaction of Upy-Upy dimers. Owing to the synergetic effect of hydrophobicity and quadruple hydrogen bonding interaction, the obtained MA-UPy-PEO-UPy-MA hydrogel exhibited excellent self-healing properties, and injectable capability, as well as superior mechanical strength, and therefore, it holds great promise in tissue engineering applications, including in cell support and drug release.

Supramolecular Helical Assemblies of Dirhodium(II) Paddlewheels with 1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane: A Remarkable Substituent Effect on the Helical Sense Preference and Amplification of the Helical Handedness Excess of Metallo-Supramolecular Helical Polymers

We report unique coordination-driven supramolecular helical assemblies of a series of dirhodium(II) tetracarboxylate paddlewheels bearing chiral phenyl- or methyl-substituted amide-bound m-terphenyl residues with triethylene glycol monomethyl ether (TEG) or n-dodecyl tails through a 1:1 complexation with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO). The chiral dirhodium complexes with DABCO in CHCl₃/n-hexane (1:1) form one-handed helical coordination polymers with a controlled propeller chirality at the m-terphenyl groups, which are stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen-bonding networks between the adjacent amide groups at the periphery mainly via a cooperative nucleation-elongation mechanism as supported by circular dichroism (CD), vibrational CD, and variable-temperature (VT) absorption and CD analyses. The VT visible-absorption titrations revealed the temperature-dependent changes in the degree of polymerization. The columnar supramolecular helical structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The helix sense of the homopolymer carrying the bulky phenyl and n-dodecyl substituents is opposite those of other chiral homopolymers despite having the same absolute configuration at the pendants. A remarkably strong "sergeants and soldiers" (S&S) effect was observed in most of the chiral/achiral copolymers, while the copolymers of the bulky chiral phenyl-substituted dirhodium complexes with n-dodecyl chains displayed an "abnormal" S&S effect accompanied by an inversion of the helix sense, which could be switched to a "normal" S&S effect by changing the solvent composition. A nonracemic dirhodium complex of 20% enantiomeric excess bearing the less bulky chiral methyl substituents with n-dodecyl chains assembled with DABCO to form an almost one-handed helix (the "majority rule" (MR) effect), whereas the three other nonracemic copolymers showed a weak MR effect.

Towards photoswitchable quadruple hydrogen bonds via a reversible "photolocking" strategy for photocontrolled self-assembly

Developing new photoswitchable noncovalent interaction motifs with controllable bonding affinity is crucial for the construction of photoresponsive supramolecular systems and materials. Here we describe a unique "photolocking" strategy for realizing photoswitchable control of quadruple hydrogen-bonding interactions on the basis of modifying the ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) module with an ortho-ester substituted azobenzene unit as the "photo-lock". Upon light irradiation, the obtained Azo-UPy motif is capable of unlocking/locking the partial H-bonding sites of the UPy unit, leading to photoswitching between homo- and heteroquadruple hydrogen-bonded dimers, which has been further applied for the fabrication of novel tunable hydrogen bonded supramolecular systems. This "photolocking" strategy appears to be broadly applicable in the rational design and construction of other H-bonding motifs with sufficiently photoswitchable noncovalent interactions.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Engineering Supramolecular Materials for Responsive Applications-Design and Functionality

Supramolecular polymers allow access to dynamic materials, where noncovalent interactions can be used to offer both enhanced material toughness and stimuli-responsiveness. The versatility of self-assembly has enabled these supramolecular motifs to be incorporated into a wide array of glassy and elastomeric materials; moreover, the interaction of these noncovalent motifs with their environment has shown to be a convenient platform for controlling material properties. In this Viewpoint, supramolecular polymers are examined through their self-assembly chemistries, approaches that can be used to control their self-assembly (e.g., covalent cross-links, nanofillers, etc.), and how the strategic application of supramolecular polymers can be used as a platform for designing the next generation of smart materials. This Viewpoint provides an overview of the aspects that have garnered interest in supramolecular polymer chemistry, while also highlighting challenges faced and innovations developed by researchers in the field.

Ultrafast Vibrational Energy Transfer through the Covalent Bond and Intra- and Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonds in a Supramolecular Dimer by Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectroscopy

In this work, the structural fluctuations and vibrational energy transfer dynamics in a supramolecular homodimer model, which is composed of 2-(9-anthracene)ureido-6-(1-undecyl)-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPAn) with quadruple intermolecular and single intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs), have been examined using ultrafast two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) and steady-state IR spectroscopies. A less structurally fluctuating intermolecular HB is found between the pyrimidinone C═O and ureido N-H groups. However, a larger structurally fluctuating intramolecular HB is suggested by the equilibrium and dynamical line-shape measurements of the ureido C═O stretch. Further, dynamical time-dependent 2D IR diagonal and off-diagonal signals show that intra- and intermolecular vibrational energy transfer processes occur on the picosecond timescale, where the latter is more efficient due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction and through-space interaction.

Thermodynamic insights into the entropically driven self-assembly of amphiphilic dyes in water

Self-assembly of amphiphilic dyes and π-systems are more difficult to understand and to control in water compared to organic solvents due to the hydrophobic effect. Herein, we elucidate in detail the self-assembly of a series of archetype bolaamphiphiles bearing a naphthalene bisimide (NBI) π-core with appended oligoethylene glycol (OEG) dendrons of different size. By utilizing temperature-dependent UV-vis spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), we have dissected the enthalpic and entropic parameters pertaining to the molecules' self-assembly. All investigated compounds show an enthalpically disfavored aggregation process leading to aggregate growth and eventually precipitation at elevated temperature, which is attributed to the dehydration of oligoethylene glycol units and their concomitant conformational changes. Back-folded conformation of the side chains plays a major role, as revealed by molecular dynamics (MD) and two dimensional NMR (2D NMR) studies, in directing the association. The sterical effect imparted by the jacketing of monomers and dimers also changes the aggregation mechanism from isodesmic to weakly anti-cooperative.

Supramolecular interactions between catalytic species allow rational control over reaction kinetics

The adaptivity of biological reaction networks largely arises through non-covalent regulation of catalysts' activity. Such type of catalyst control is still nascent in synthetic chemical networks and thereby hampers their ability to display life-like behavior. Here, we report a bio-inspired system in which non-covalent interactions between two complementary phase-transfer catalysts are used to regulate reaction kinetics. While one catalyst gives bimolecular kinetics, the second displays autoinductive feedback, resulting in sigmoidal kinetics. When both catalysts are combined, the interactions between them allow rational control over the shape of the kinetic curves. Computational models are used to gain insight into the structure, interplay, and activity of each catalytic species, and the scope of the system is examined by optimizing the linearity of the kinetic curves. Combined, our findings highlight the effectiveness of regulating reaction kinetics using non-covalent catalyst interactions, but also emphasize the risk for unforeseen catalytic contributions in complex systems and the necessity to combine detailed experiments with kinetic modelling.

Direct Monitoring of Molecular Events at the Surface: One-Step Access to Flexibly Stable Colloidal Ag Nanoparticles

Design, control, and direct characterization of surface properties are prerequisites to all the practical applications of nanoparticles. Since stable and homogeneous colloidal conditions are required for most applications, the amenability of nanoparticles to in-solution processing must also be addressed. Herein, we demonstrate that solution ¹H NMR spectroscopy is an effective tool for direct monitoring of the production of Ag nanoparticles. The production consists of two stages, complexation and reduction, which are both clearly observed by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Design and synthesis of a series of amphiphilic amines have led to the one-step production of "flexibly" stable colloidal Ag nanoparticles, which form clear stable brown solutions in a wide range of solvents.

The application of a UHPLC system to study the formation of various chemical species by compounds undergoing efficient self-aggregation and to determine the homodimerization constants (KDM) with values in the high range of 106–1010 M−1

This work demonstrates a new concept for the use of UHPLC method for identification of the species formed by a self-aggregating compound depending on its concentration and solvent used and to determine homodimerization constants, K_DM = 10⁶–10¹⁰ M⁻¹.

Conformational equilibrium in supramolecular chemistry: Dibutyltriuret case

The association of substituted benzoates and naphthyridine dianions was used to study the complexation of dibutyltriuret. The title molecule is the simplest molecule able to form two intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The naphthyridine salt was used to break two intramolecular hydrogen bonds at a time while with the use of substituted benzoates the systematic approach to study association was achieved. Both, titrations and variable temperature measurements shed the light on the importance of conformational equilibrium and its influence on association in solution. Moreover, the associates were observed by mass spectrometry. The DFT-based computations for complexes and single bond rotational barriers supports experimental data and helps understanding the properties of multiply hydrogen bonded complexes.

Well-defined supramolecular polymers based on orthogonal hydrogen-bonding and host–guest interactions

Two architecturally controlled supramolecular polymers have been fabricated via the concurrent integration of orthogonal non-covalent recognition motifs, demonstrating significant chain topological-dependent supramolecular polymerization behaviors.

Nanostructured Supramolecular Block Copolymers Based on Polydimethylsiloxane and Polylactide

Hierarchical self-assembly has been demonstrated with diblock copolymers comprising poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and poly(lactide) (PLA) with supramolecular, 4-fold hydrogen-bonding junctions. PDMS with a single ureidoguanosine unit at the end was synthesized by a postpolymerization strategy. PLA with a single 1,7-diamidonaphthyridine was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization from the appropriate functional initiator. Selective association of the end groups to form distinct, noncovalent connections between the respective homopolymers in blends was established by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The orthogonal self-assembly of the resulting pseudoblock copolymer, driven by immiscibility between the polymer constituents was demonstrated. Bulk polymer blends were prepared that have approximately symmetric composition and a 1:1 end-group stoichiometry. Small angle X-ray scattering combined with differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy provide unambiguous evidence for the adoption of a lamellar morphology having long-range order, nanoscopic domain dimensions (20 nm pitch), and a sharp domain interface defined by the supramolecular building blocks.

Self-complementary recognition of supramolecular urea-aminotriazines in solution and on surfaces

The recognition of self-complementary quadruple urea-aminotriazine (UAT)-based hydrogen-bonded arrays was investigated in solution and at surfaces. For this purpose, an UAT-based donor-acceptor-donor-acceptor (DADA) array and complementary receptors were synthesized. Two-dimensional proton nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR) measurements in CDCl(3) pointed at an intramolecular hydrogen-bond stabilization of the UAT, which promotes a planar molecular geometry and, thereby, results in a significant stabilization of the dimeric complex. The bond strength of the UAT dimers at surfaces was determined by atomic force microscopy-based single molecule force spectroscopy (AFM-SMFS) in hexadecane. The UAT receptor was immobilized on gold surfaces using an ultrathin layer of ethylene glycol terminated lipoic acid and isocyanate chemistry. The layers obtained and the reversible self-complementary recognition were thoroughly characterized with contact angle measurements, grazing angle Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and AFM. Loading rate-dependent SMFS measurements yielded a barrier width x(β) and a bond lifetime at zero force t(off)(0) of 0.29 ± 0.02 nm and 100 ± 80 ms, respectively. The value of the corresponding off-rate constant k(off) suggests a substantially larger value of the dimerization constant compared to theoretical predictions, which is fully in line with the additional intramolecular hydrogen-bond stabilization detected in solution by (1)H NMR spectroscopy.

Relationship between conformational flexibility and chelate cooperativity

A family of four biscarbamates (AA) and four bisphenols (DD) were synthesized, and H-bonding interactions between all AA•DD combinations were characterized using (1)H NMR titrations in carbon tetrachloride. A chemical double mutant cycle analysis shows that there are no secondary electrostatic interactions or allosteric cooperativity in these systems, and the system therefore provides an ideal platform for investigating the relationship between chemical structure and chelate cooperativity. Effective molarities (EMs) were measured for 12 different systems, where the number of rotors in the chains connecting the two H-bond sites was varied from 5 to 20. The association constants vary by less than an order of magnitude for all 12 complexes, and the variation in EM is remarkably small (0.1-0.9 M). The results provide a relationship between EM and the number of rotors in the connecting chains (r): EM ≈ 10r(-3/2). The value of 10 M is the upper limit for the value of EM for a noncovalent intramolecular interaction. Introduction of rotors reduces the value of EM from this maximum in accord with a random walk analysis of the encounter probability of the chain ends (r(-3/2)). Noncovalent EMs never reach the very high values observed for covalent processes, which places limitations on the magnitudes of the effects that one is likely to achieve through the use of chelate cooperativity in supramolecular assembly and catalysis. On the other hand, the decrease in EM due to the introduction of conformational flexibility is less dramatic than one might expect based on the behavior of covalent systems, which limits the losses in binding affinity caused by poor preorganization of the interaction sites.
