Abstract
This work reports the synthesis and catalytic application of mesoporous Au-loaded Mn3 O4 nanoparticle assemblies (MNAs) with different Au contents, i. e., 0.2, 0.5 and 1 wt %, towards the selective oxidation of anilines into the corresponding nitroarenes. Among common oxidants, as well as several supported gold nanoparticle platforms, Au/Mn3 O4 MNAs containing 0.5 wt % Au with an average particle size of 3-4 nm show the best catalytic performance in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as a mild oxidant. In all cases, the corresponding nitroarenes were isolated in high to excellent yields (85-97 %) and selectivity (>98 %) from acetonitrile or greener solvents, such as ethyl acetate, after simple flash chromatography purification. The 0.5 % Au/Mn3 O4 catalyst can be isolated and reused four times without a significant loss of its activity and can be applied successfully to a lab-scale reaction of p-toluidine (1 mmol) leading to the p-nitrotulene in 83 % yield. The presence of AuNPs on the Mn3 O4 surface enhances the catalytic activity for the formation of the desired nitroarene. A reasonable mechanism was proposed including the plausible formation of two intermediates, the corresponding N-aryl hydroxylamine and the nitrosoarene.

Abstract
Two Co(ii) complexes of the formula CoLOMeX2 (X = Cl- (1a); X = I- (1b)), where LOMe is 2-methoxy-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) aniline, were synthesized and their structure, spectra and reactivity were studied. Upon oxidation of 1a and 1b, the ligand LOMe undergoes demethylation at the metal centre resulting in the formation of Co(iii) complexes with modified phenoxide ligands. This is the very first example of oxidative O-demethylation reported at a Co(ii) centre. The oxidative behaviour exhibits a striking dependence on the nature of coligands coordinated to the metal centre. The Co(ii) complex 1a with stronger chloro coligands requires a strong oxidising agent like t-BuOOH for oxidative demethylation and the subsequent formation of a mononuclear Co(iii) complex with a demethylated ligand, CoLO-Cl2 (2). On the other hand, complex 1b with weaker iodo coligands undergoes oxidation in the presence of the weak oxidant O2 to form a dihydroxo bridged binuclear Co(iii) complex [Co2(LO-)2(OH)2]2+ (3) with modified phenoxide ligands. The oxidation of 1b to 3 is monitored and the intermediate Co(ii) iodo aqua complex [CoLOMeI(H2O)]+ and Co(ii) diaqua complex [CoLOMe(H2O)2]2+ are isolated and characterised.

Abstract
Naturally occurring benzoxanthenones, which belong to the vast family of lignans, are promising biologically relevant targets. They are biosynthetically produced by the oxidative dimerization of 2-propenyl phenols. In this manuscript, we disclose a powerful automated flow-based strategy for identifying and optimizing a cobalt-catalyzed oxidizing system for the bioinspired dimerization of 2-propenyl phenols. We designed a reconfigurable flow reactor associating online monitoring and process control instrumentation. Our machine was first configured as an automated screening platform to evaluate a matrix of 4 catalysts (plus the blank) and 5 oxidants (plus the blank) at two different temperatures, resulting in an array of 50 reactions. The automated screening was conducted on micromole scale at a rate of one fully characterized reaction every 26 min. After having identified the most promising cobalt-catalyzed oxidizing system, the automated screening platform was straightforwardly reconfigured to an autonomous self-optimizing flow reactor by implementation of an optimization algorithm in the closed-loop system. The optimization campaign allowed the determination of very effective experimental conditions in a limited number of experiments, which allowed us to prepare the natural products carpanone and polemannone B as well as synthetic analogues.

Abstract
Development of novel and greener methods for the selective oxidation of various organic compounds is a challenging task. Herein, a novel protocol for the selective oxidation of aromatic amines to nitroaromatics at room temperature is developed. The oxidation reaction was carried out using a mixture of formic acid and aqueous hydrogen peroxide, which resulted in the in situ formation of performic acid. Further, improvement of selectivity was studied using different surfactants, of which cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) gave the highest selectivity (85%) toward nitrobenzene. The role of CTAB in achieving higher selectivity is discussed. Under optimized reaction conditions, various substituted amines were successfully oxidized to corresponding nitro compounds. It is worth mentioning that this is the first report on oxidation of amines to nitro compounds in an aqueous medium with high selectivity.

Abstract
The ubiquitous flavin-dependent monooxygenases commonly catalyze oxygenation reactions by means of a transient C4a-peroxyflavin. A recent study, however, suggested an unprecedented flavin-oxygenating species, proposed as the flavin-N5-oxide (Fl(N5[O])), as key to an oxidative Favorskii-type rearrangement in the biosynthesis of the bacterial polyketide antibiotic enterocin. This stable superoxidized flavin is covalently tethered to the enzyme EncM and converted into FADH2 (Fl(red)) during substrate turnover. Subsequent reaction of Fl(red) with molecular oxygen restores the postulated Fl(N5[O]) via an unknown pathway. Here, we provide direct evidence for the Fl(N5[O]) species via isotope labeling, proteolytic digestion, and high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry of EncM. We propose that formation of this species occurs by hydrogen-transfer from Fl(red) to molecular oxygen, allowing radical coupling of the formed protonated superoxide and anionic flavin semiquinone at N5, before elimination of water affords the Fl(N5[O]) cofactor. Further biochemical and spectroscopic investigations reveal important features of the Fl(N5[O]) species and the EncM catalytic mechanism. We speculate that flavin-N5-oxides may be intermediates or catalytically active species in other flavoproteins that form the anionic semiquinone and promote access of oxygen to N5.

Abstract
Effect of L-cysteine as the cocatalyst on the oxidation of cyclohexane by tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP) catalyzed by manganese tetraphenylporphyrin (MnTPP) has been investigated. The results showed that L-cysteine could moderately improve the catalytic activity of MnTPP and significantly increase the selectivity of cyclohexanol. Different from imidazole and pyridine, the L-cysteine may perform dual roles in the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane. Besides as the axial ligand for MnTPP, the L-cysteine could also react with cyclohexyl peroxide formed as the intermediate to produce alcohol as the main product.

Abstract
The kinetics of oxidation of 16 meta-, ortho-, and para-substituted anilines with nine oxo(salen)chromium(V) ions have been studied by spectrophotometric, ESIMS, and EPR techniques. During the course of the reaction, two new peaks with lambda(max) at 470 and 730 nm appear in the absorption spectrum, and these peaks are due to the formation of emeraldine forms of oligomers of aniline supported by the ESIMS peaks with m/z values 274 and 365 (for the trimer and tetramer of aniline). The rate of the reaction is highly sensitive to the change of substituents in the aryl moiety of aniline and in the salen ligand of chromium(V) complexes. Application of the Hammett equation to analyze kinetic data yields a rho value of -3.8 for the substituent variation in aniline and +2.2 for the substituent variation in the salen ligand of the metal complex. On the basis of the spectral, kinetic, and product analysis studies, a mechanism involving an electron transfer from the nitrogen of aniline to the metal complex in the rate controlling step has been proposed. The Marcus equation has been successfully applied to this system, and the calculated values are compliant with the measured values.

Abstract
Redox and ligand exchange reactions of the oxygenation catalyst (N,N '-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediaminato)cobalt(II), Co(salen), and its one-electron oxidation product, Co(salen)(+), are investigated in DMF, pyridine, and mixtures of these solvents. Electron transfers and solvent exchange reactions involving three neutral Co(II) and three cationic Co(III) complexes with different axially bound solvent molecules (two DMF, one DMF and one pyridine, or two pyridine molecules) form a three-rung ladder scheme. All formal potentials E(0) and equilibrium constants K in this scheme are determined from electrochemical or spectrophotometric experiments or the construction of thermodynamic cycles. The latter are also used to prove consistency of the results. Values for the E(0) and K are discussed in terms of the Co coordination geometry, solvent effects on the potentials, the thermodynamics of cross reactions, and the distribution of Co(II) and Co(III) species as a function of the solvent composition. Some peculiarities found in the oxygenation of flavonols and indoles are explained.
