Abstract
The synthesis of enantiomerically-enriched trans-cyclopropane amino- and hydroxy-acids can be achieved by intramolecular ring closure in moderate to good yields. The optically active cyclopropane precursors are easily prepared in a short sequence from inexpensive, commercially available olefins and tert-butyl acetate. Several leaving groups and bases were compared for the cyclopropanation step, showing that the diphenylphosphinate and tosyl leaving groups give the best results when used in combination with either LDA or NaHMDS.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Thermolysis of enantiopure sulfonyl pyrazolines 4 and 5, easily obtained from (Z)-3-p-tolylsulfinylacrylonitriles (1), afforded sulfonyl cyclopropanes (6, 7) in a completely stereoselective manner in almost quantitative yields. Both cyclopropanes and alkylidenecyclopropanes, containing one or two chiral carbon atoms, one of them being quaternary, were obtained by hydrogenolysis of the C-S bonding and under the conditions reported by Julia, respectively. The highly stereoselective extrusion of nitrogen suggests a concerted mechanism.

Abstract
The efficient synthesis of tetrapeptide 5 containing, in alternation, cyclobutane and beta-alanine residues is described. NMR experiments both at low temperature in CDCl(3) and at 298 K in DMSO-d(6) solutions show the contribution of a strong hydrogen bond in the folded major conformation of 5. Temperature coefficients and diffusion times point out a hydrogen bond involving the NH proton from the cyclobutane residue 1 whereas NOEs manifest the high rigidity of the central fragment of the molecule and are compatible with a 14-membered macrocycle. Theoretical calculations predict a most stable folded conformation corresponding to a 14-helix stabilized by a hydrogen bond between NH(10) in the first residue and OC(25) in the third residue. This structure remains unaltered during the molecular dynamics simulation at 298 K in chloroform. All these results provide evidence for a 14-helical folding and reveal the ability of cis-2-aminocyclobutane carboxylic acid residues to promote folded conformations when incorporated into beta-peptides.

Abstract
Versatile and stereocontrolled synthetic entries to novel types of cyclopropyl carbocyclic nucleosides are described. The target products have been synthesized from suitable cyclopropane precursors obtained, in turn, from olefinic compounds derived from D-glyceraldehyde as a chiral precursor. Selective manipulation of the functional groups has allowed the preparation of enantiopure nucleosides, some of them displaying opposite chirality. All these molecules contain a quaternary stereogenic carbon at C-1 or C-3 of the cyclopropane ring and bear an amino, a hydroxymethyl, or a methyl group as an additional substituent. In one instance, thymine is directly linked to the cyclopropane. A methylene unit serves as the spacer in the other synthesized nucleosides.

Abstract
The reactions between N-benzyl- and N-methylhydroxylamine and chiral enoate esters, derived from D-glyceraldehyde and (-)-verbenone, respectively, have been investigated. Theoretical calculations show that the most favorable mechanism involves the concerted cycloaddition of the hydroxylamine to the substrate. This result is in good agreement with the stereospecificity observed when the trisubstituted olefins are used. The open-chain adducts have been isolated when the processes are carried out at low temperatures and for short reaction times. These compounds evolve to the corresponding isoxazolidinones on standing at room temperature or under acid catalysis. The high pi-facial diastereoselection has been rationalized on the basis of steric effects induced by the dioxolane ring for D-glyceraldehyde derivatives or by the cyclobutane gem-dimethyl substitution for esters prepared from (-)-verbenone. As an application of these reactions, new beta-amino acids have been synthesized in a highly efficient and stereocontrolled manner.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The dipolarophilic reactivity of enantiopure (Z)-3-p-tolylsulfinylacrylonitriles (1) has been evaluated with diazoalkanes. 3-Cyanopyrazoles are obtained when R = H, but with R = alkyl (Bn, n-Bu, and t-Bu) only one cycloadduct (4 or 5) is formed in high yield under mild conditions, therefore evidencing a complete control of the regioselectivity and the endo/exo and pi-facial selectivities. These reactions are a new straightforward entry to the synthesis of pyrazolines and related structures and reveal the excellent dipolarophilic features of (Z)-sulfinylacrylonitriles.

Abstract
Chiral pentenoates 1-3 in both Z and E isomeric forms underwent stationary irradiations in several solvents and in the presence of different photosensitizers. The photostationary-state ratio has been determined for each Z/E couple showing a predominance of the thermodynamically more stable isomer for 1 and 3. Moreover, transient species were generated by pulsed laser excitation and detected by their characteristic ultraviolet absorptions, being the first time that enoate-originated triplets are detected. Stern-Volmer quenching studies afforded a quantitative measure for the efficiency of the photosensitization processes induced by benzophenone or acetophenone and allowed the determination of the corresponding quenching rate constants. Density functional calculations permitted the determination of the geometries and the energies of the diastereomeric excited states. Two diastereomeric orthogonal and two diastereomeric planar structures result as a consequence of the presence of a chiral substituent. The orthogonal triplets are the energy minima in all cases, whereas the planar triplets are the transition states linking these orthogonal structures, the corresponding energy barriers being 8-10 kcal mol(-1) for enoates 1-3. The computed S(0) to T(1) excitation energies show a trend which is consistent with the quenching rate constants. On the other hand, the triplet lifetimes determined for 1 and 2 are unusually long (1-20 micros) if compared with the data already described for several enones, in the range of nanoseconds. This fact has been rationalized from calculations of spin-orbit coupling at several points of the T(1) potential energy surface. This coupling is maximum for structures with a torsional angle close to 45 degrees, which are 4-5 kcal mol(-1) above the minima of T(1). Calculations done on the hypothetical aldehyde 4 and methyl vinyl ketone show much lower energy barriers, thus accounting for the shorter lifetimes reported for enone triplets.

Abstract
Several polyfunctionalized cyclobutane derivatives have been synthesized using commercial (-)-alpha-pinene and (-)-verbenone as chiral precursors. Thus, oxidative cleavage of these compounds by using ruthenium trichloride afforded quantitatively (-)-cis-pinonic and (-)-cis-pinononic acids, respectively, without epimerization. These products were converted into several types of aldehydes, which are the key intermediates in the synthesis of cyclobutane dehydro amino acids via Wittig-Horner condensations with suitable phosphonates. These reactions are highly stereoselective, affording exclusively (Z) isomers, stereochemistry being assessed by NMR experiments. The obtained dehydro amino acids are polyfunctionalized molecules useful for the synthesis of other alpha-amino acids, with additional chiral centers, whose configuration must be induced by the chirality of the terpene employed as a precursor.

Abstract
The stereochemical outcome of diazomethane cycloadditions to several chiral electron-deficient olefins has been investigated in order to establish the origin of the pi-facial diastereoselection. Nitro olefins, vinyl sulfones, enoates, and 2-amino enoates have been used for such a purpose. These substrates have been prepared from D-glyceraldehyde acetonide through Wittig-type condensations and present an alkoxy substituent, provided by the bulky dioxolane ring, attached to the stereogenic allylic carbon. Syn-adducts have been obtained in all cases as the major isomers, independently of the Z/E stereochemistry of the double bond and the number and the nature of the substituents, the chirality of the asymmetric allylic carbon being the only thing responsible for the diastereoselection. Theoretical calculations show that steric hindrance due to the bulky dioxolane group is the main factor governing the preference for the syn-attack of diazomethane to the olefinic double bond.
