Abstract
The asymmetric syntheses of all members of the Hancock alkaloid family based upon a 2-substituted N-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline core are delineated. The conjugate addition of enantiopure lithium N-benzyl- N-(α-methyl- p-methoxybenzyl)amide to 5-( o-bromophenyl)- N-methoxy- N-methylpent-2-enamide is used to generate the requisite C-2 stereogenic center of the targets, while an intramolecular Buchwald-Hartwig coupling is used to form the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline ring. Late-stage diversification completes construction of the C-2 side chains. Thus, (-)-cuspareine, (-)-galipinine, (-)-galipeine, and (-)-angustureine were prepared in overall yields of 30%, 28%, 15%, and 39%, respectively, in nine steps from commercially available 3-( o-bromophenyl)propanoic acid in all cases. Unambiguously corrected 1H and 13C NMR data for the originally isolated samples of (-)-cuspareine, (-)-galipinine, and (-)-angustureine are also reported, representing a valuable reference resource for these popular synthetic targets.

Abstract
[structures: see text] A range of cis-fused hexahydro-1-benzofuran-3(2H)-one or tetrahydro-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-3(3aH)-one ring systems was synthesized by the rhodium(II) acetate catalyzed reaction of alpha-diazo carbonyl compounds in the presence of various oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur nucleophiles. A double-nucleophilic addition was possible by using an excess of alpha-diazo ketone. These reactions proceeded with complete diastereoselectivity, and the stereochemistry was confirmed by the single-crystal X-ray analysis. This process discloses the first example of tandem cyclization-nucleophilic addition reaction.

Abstract
Rhodium(II)-catalyzed decomposition of diazoketones 1 and 5 bearing a cyclic dithioacetal, in the presence of aldehyde and ClTi(Oi-Pr)(3), afforded both or one of the C=C-bonded products, i.e., ring-enlarged enone 2 and ring-transformed thiophenone 3, that were formed between aldehyde and intermediate bicyclosulfonium ylide. The stereochemistry of the exocyclic C=C bond in the products was exclusively Z. The sulfonium atom that transiently composed the ylide was incorporated into products, but no oxirane was formed.

Abstract
Cyclohydrocarbonylative ring expansion of acetylenic thiazoles in the presence of CO, H(2), and catalytic quantities of the zwitterionic rhodium complex (eta(6)-C(6)H(5)BPh(3))(-)Rh(+)(1,5-COD) and triphenyl phosphite affords thiazepinones in 61 to 90% yields. This novel transformation of a 5- to a 7-membered heterocycle is readily applied to acetylenic thiazoles containing hydro, alkyl, alkyl halide, vinyl, and benzo substitutents in positions 4 and 5 of the thiazole ring in addition to alkyl-, ether-, ester-, vinyl-, and aryl-substituted alkynes at position 2.
