Abstract
Salicylimines are versatile compounds in which an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer and torsional motions may set in upon photoexcitation. Here, we study N-(α-phenylethyl)salicylimine (PESA) to elucidate how the photochemical reaction pathways depend on the excitation wavelength and to what extent the relative photoproduct distribution can be steered towards a desired species. DFT structure and potential energy calculations disclose that the most stable ground-state conformer is an enol species and that the photodynamics may proceed differently depending on the excited state that is reached. With matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy, the predominance of the enol conformer of PESA is confirmed. Illumination of the cryogenic sample with different wavelengths shifts the ratio of enol and keto products, and by sequential irradiation a selective re- and depopulation is possible. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy further reveals that also at room temperature, the outcome of the photoreaction depends on excitation wavelength, and in combination with the calculations, it can be rationalized that the decisive step occurs within the first hundred femtoseconds. Since the ultrafast dynamics mostly match those of similar salicylimines, our findings might also apply to those systems and provide additional insight into their reported sensitivity on excitation energy.

Simple Rules for Complex Near-Glass-Transition Phenomena in Medium-Sized Schiff Bases. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms23095185. Abstract
Glass-forming ability is one of the most desired properties of organic compounds dedicated to optoelectronic applications. Therefore, finding general structure–property relationships and other rules governing vitrification and related near-glass-transition phenomena is a burning issue for numerous compound families, such as Schiff bases. Hence, we employ differential scanning calorimetry, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and quantum density functional theory calculations to investigate near-glass-transition phenomena, as well as ambient- and high-pressure molecular dynamics for two structurally related Schiff bases belonging to the family of glycine imino esters. Firstly, the surprising great stability of the supercooled liquid phase is shown for these compounds, also under high-pressure conditions. Secondly, atypical self-organization via bifurcated hydrogen bonds into lasting centrosymmetric dimers is proven. Finally, by comparing the obtained results with the previous report, some general rules that govern ambient- and high-pressure molecular dynamics and near-glass transition phenomena are derived for the family of glycine imino esters. Particularly, we derive a mathematical formula to predict and tune their glass transition temperature (Tg) and its pressure coefficient (dTg/dp). We also show that, surprisingly, despite the presence of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds, van der Waals and dipole–dipole interactions are the main forces governing molecular dynamics and dielectric properties of glycine imino esters.

Abstract
A new polymorph of (E)-4-bromo-2-[(phenylimino)methyl]phenol, C13H10BrNO, is reported, together with a low-temperature structure determination of the previously published polymorph. Both polymorphs were found to have an intramolecular O-H...N hydrogen bond between the phenol OH group and the imine N atom, forming an S(6) ring. The crystals were observed to have different colours at room temperature, with the previously published polymorph being more orange and the new polymorph more yellow. The planarity of the molecule in the two polymorphs was found to be significantly different, with dihedral angles (Φ) between the two aromatic rings for the previously published `orange' polymorph of Φ = 1.8 (2)° at 120 K, while the new `yellow' polymorph had Φ = 45.6 (1)° at 150 K. It was also observed that both polymorphs displayed some degree of thermochromism and upon cooling the `orange' polymorph became more yellow, while the `yellow' polymorph became paler upon cooling.

Abstract
The paper presents the synthesis and characterization of two 4-substituted phthalimide 2-hydroxy-Schiff bases containing salicylic (4) and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl (5) moieties. The structural differences of 2-hydroxyaryl substituents, resulting in different enol/keto tautomeric behaviour, depending on the solvent environment were studied by absorption UV-Vis spectroscopy. Compound 5 is characterized by a solvent-dependent tautomeric equilibrium (KT in toluene = 0.12, acetonitrile = 0.22 and MeOH = 0.63) while no tautomerism is observed in 4. Ground state theoretical DFT calculations by using continuum solvation in MeOH indicate an energy barrier between enol/keto tautomer 5.6 kcal mol-1 of 4 and 0.63 kcal mol-1 of 5, which confirms the experimentally observed impossibility of the tautomeric equilibrium in the former. The experimentally observed specific solvent effect in methanol is modeled via explicit solvation. The excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) was investigated by steady state fluorescence spectroscopy. Both compounds show a high rate of photoconversion to keto tautomers hence keto emissions with large Stokes shifts in five alcohols (MeOH, EtOH, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, and 1-pentanol) and various aprotic solvents (toluene, dichlormethane, acetone, AcCN). According to the excited state TDDFT calculations using implicit solvation in MeOH, it was found that enol tautomers of 4 and 5 are higher in energy compared to the keto ones, which explains the origin of the experimentally observed keto form emission.

Abstract
Ground state intramolecular proton transfer process has been comprehensively investigated in three salicylideneaniline Schiff base derivatives (SB1, SB2, and SB3) using experimental and theoretical methods. It has been confirmed that all the three Schiff base molecules in the ground electronic state exist in the enol form in non-polar and polar aprotic solvents. Keto form is being populated by the polar protic solvent through ground state intramolecular proton transfer (GSIPT) process. Ground state equilibrium between the enol and keto tautomers for SB1 and SB3 is mainly governed by the proton donating ability of the solvent. Ground state equilibria between the enol and keto tautomers of SB2 which is a positional isomer of SB3 is governed by the polarity and proton donating ability of the solvents. Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process is also evidenced in all the three Schiff base molecules. Theoretical calculations at the B3LYP/cc-pVDZ level in the gas phase and in different solvents using polarisable continuum model (PCM) have failed to establish the GSIPT process. Microsolvation of individual enol and keto conformers has been investigated considering upto three solvent molecules. The energetics of the individual conformers together with the corresponding transition state have been calculated. It has been confirmed that the keto conformer is more stable compared to the enol conformer in microsolvated cluster of three methanol molecules. Lowering of activation energy for the enol to keto tautomerisation in the presence of methanol also supports the experimental observation for GSIPT process. TDDFT/B3LYP/cc-pVDZ single point calculations for microsolvated clusters of enol and keto form of the Schiff base molecules exhibit an excellent agreement with the experimentally obtained absorption spectra. Difference in spectral nature of the Schiff base molecules has been explained using natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) has also been utilised to understand the GSIPT process in detail.

Abstract
The ultrafast photoinduced processes of salicylidene-2-anthrylamine (2-AntSA) in acetonitrile solution have been investigated using DFT/TD-DFT static electronic structure calculations and excited state ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Two different isoenergetic enol ground-state structures with suitable geometry for excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) where chosen for the excited-state dynamics. The S1 relaxed potential energy profiles for the excited state intramolecular proton transfer and the N[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond isomerization reactions predict that both reactions occur over an energy barrier and that they are competitive processes in the deactivation of the Franck-Condon state. The photodynamic simulations show that the ESIPT occurs in the femtosecond time scale for both conformers (77 and 213 fs for IA and IIA, respectively) and that the speed is modulated by the ability of the conformers to evolve toward a planar conformation in the S1 state. The trajectories predict two conical intersections which provide nonradiative relaxation pathways to the S0 state. The first one is located in the twisted enol region, where the proton transfer process is unlikely, and only occurs for the conformer IIA in a time scale ≥600 fs. The second conical intersection is located in the cis-keto region, and represents an effective depopulation channel toward the trans-keto form. All our results are in remarkably good agreement with experiments.

Abstract
A new diamine, (dimethylsilanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(4-aminobenzoate) (1), containing dimethylsilane spacer, was prepared by the condensation of p-aminobenzoic acid with bis(chloromethyl)dimethylsilane. This was subsequently reacted with salicylaldehyde, 3-hydroxy-salicylaldehyde, and 3-methoxy-salicyladehyde, when corresponding Schiff bases (E)-(dimethylsilanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(4-((E)-(2-hydroxybenzilidene)amino)benzoate (2), (E)-(dimethylsilanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(4-((E)-(2-hydroxybenzilidene)amino)benzoate (3), and (E)-(dimethylsilanediyl)bis(methylene) bis(4-((E)-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzilidene)amino)benzoate (4), respectively were formed. All the obtained compounds were structurally characterized by spectral (FT-IR, (1)HNMR, (13)CNMR) analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Photophysical studies revealed that the new prepared Schiff bases are good UV light absorbing and fluorescent materials. Thus, they exhibit strong UV/Vis-absorption at 250-400nm and violet or orange emission, in sensitive dependence on the polarity of the solvents and the nature of the substituent (H, OH and OCH3) at the aromatic ring. The antimicrobial activity of these compounds was first studied in vitro by the disk diffusion assay against two species of bacteria and three fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentration was then determined with the reference of standard compounds. The results displayed that Schiff bases 3 and 4 having hydroxy- and methoxy-substituents on the aromatic ring were better inhibitors of both types of species (bacteria and fungi) than standard compounds, Caspofungin and Kanamycin.

Abstract
The molecular structure and the relative stabilities of the four possible tautomers of the immunosuppressant azathioprine (AZA) are calculated by DFT/B3LYP method using different basis sets. The results of the energy analysis and thermodynamic treatment of the obtained data are used to predict the relative stabilities of the AZA tautomers. The effect of solvents such as DMSO and water on the stability of the AZA tautomers was studied using the polarized continuum method (PCM) at the same level of theory. The calculation predicted that, the total energies of all tautomers are decreased indicating that all tautomers are more or less stabilized by the solvent effect. The vibrational spectra of AZA are calculated using the same level of theory and the results are compared with the experimentally measured FTIR spectra. Good correlation is obtained between the experimental and calculated vibrational frequencies (R(2)=0.997). The electronic spectra of AZA in gas phase and in methanol as solvent are calculated using the TD-DFT method. The calculations predicted bathochromic shift in all the spectral bands in presence of solvent compared to the gas phase. Also the NMR spectra of all tautomers are calculated and the results are correlated with the experimental NMR chemical shifts where the most stable tautomer gives the best correlation coefficient (R(2)=0.996).

Abstract
In this study, the molecular structure and spectroscopic properties of title compound were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopies. These properties of title compound were also investigated from calculative point of view. The X-ray diffraction and FT-IR analyses reveal the existence of keto form in the solid state. UV-vis spectra were recorded in different organic solvents. The results show that title compound exists in both keto and enol forms in DMSO, EtOH but it exists in enol form in benzene. In addition, the title compound in DMSO showed new absorption band at 436 nm due to the high ionizing effect of this solvent. The geometry optimization of title compound in gas phase was performed using DFT method with B3LYP applying 6-311G(d,p) basis set. TD-DFT calculations starting from optimized geometry were carried out in gas phase to calculate excitation energies of title compound. The non-linear optical properties were computed with the same level of theory and title compound showed a good second order nonlinear optical property. In addition, thermodynamic properties were obtained in the range of 100-500 K.

Abstract
In this study, the molecular structure and spectroscopic properties of the title compound were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopies. These properties were also investigated using DFT method. The most convenient conformation of title compound was firstly determined. The geometry optimizations in gas phase and solvent media were performed by DFT methods with B3LYP adding 6-31G(d) basis set. The differences between crystal and computational structures are due to crystal packing in which hydrogen bonds play an important role. UV-vis spectra were recorded in different organic solvents. The results show that title compound exists in both keto and enol forms in DMSO, EtOH but it tends to shift towards enol form in benzene. The polar solvents facilitate the proton transfer by decreasing the activation energy needed for Transition State. The formation of both keto and enol forms in DMSO and EtOH is due to decrease in the activation energy. TD-DFT calculations starting from optimized geometry were carried out in both gas and solution phases to calculate excitation energies of the title compound. The non-linear optical properties were computed at the theory level and the title compound showed a good second order non-linear optical property. In addition, thermodynamic properties were obtained in the range of 100-500K.

Abstract
A new salicylideneaniline-based organogelator has been synthesized, and it can gelatinize organic solvents, including cyclohexane, toluene, benzene, and some mixed solvents. SEM images show that it has self-assembled into 1-D nanofibers, which further cross-link to form 3-D network. On the basis of the results of small-angle XRD and the optimized molecular length by semiempirical quantum calculations, the gelators are supposed to pack into a unimolecular lamellar structure with a period of 3.01 nm. Significantly, reversible chromism is realized with respect of the tautomerism between the NH and OH forms during the sol-gel freezing repetition. Furthermore, the gel can emit intense green light, and the fluorescent quantum yield of the gel is approximately 600 times higher than that of the solution. The aggregation-induced emission enhancement is ascribed to the formation of J aggregation and the inhibition of intramolecular rotation in the gel state.
