Abstract
Two novel diarylethene-fused subporphyrinoids were prepared and characterized. A mono diarylethene derivative was obtained via a statistical condensation reaction with 2 eq. of 1,2-dicyanobenzene and 1 eq. of thiophene-disubstituted butenedinitrile. The symmetric triply diarylethene-fused subporphyrazine was synthesized via a cyclotrimerization reaction of the thiophene-disubstituted butenedinitrile derivative. These compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The spectroscopic properties have been measured in hexane and in chloroform. The mono diarylethene-fused-type compound showed photochromism at 580 nm and >700 nm wavelength, accompanied by degradation. According to DFT calculations, photoreactivity likely depends on the contribution of aromatic feature of pyrrole ring bonded to two thiophene rings.

Abstract
Diarylethene (DAE) molecular switches have continued to attract the attention of researchers for over 20 years. Their remarkable photophysical properties endow them with countless applications in photonics and molecular technologies. However, despite extensive experimental and theoretical research, the mechanism of DAE photoswitching is not yet fully rationalized. In this work, we investigate the ring closure dynamics of a popular DAE switch, 1,2-bis(3-methyl-5-phenyl-2 thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (PT), using nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations. Employing the fewest switches surface hopping protocol, along with the semi-empirical multireference ODM2/MRCI-SD method, we investigate possible reaction pathways for this photoprocess, as well as their timescales and resulting photoproducts. Furthermore, using a dynamic configuration-space sampling procedure, we elucidate the role of triplet states in the photocyclization of PT, supporting available experimental data for the closely related DMPT molecule, which indicate an ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) transition competing with the singlet-driven photoswitching reaction. Our findings not only corroborate experimental studies on DAE switches, but also provide new mechanistic insights into the potential use in the rational design of DAE switches tailored for specific technological applications.

Abstract
Dithienylethenes (DTEs) are a promising class of organic photoswitches that can be used to create crystalline solids with properties controlled by light. However, the ability of DTEs to adopt multiple conformations, only one of which is photoactive, complicates the rational design of these materials. Herein, the synthesis and structural characterization of 19 crystalline solids containing a single DTE molecule are described. A novel D-D analysis of the molecular geometries obtained from rotational potential energy surface calculations and the ensemble of experimental structures were used to construct a crystal landscape for DTE. Of the 19 crystal structures, 17 contained photoinactive DTE rotamers and only 2 were photoactive. These results highlight the challenges associated with the design of these materials. Overall, the D-D analysis described herein provides rapid, effective and intuitive means of linking the molecular structure to photoactivity that could be applied more broadly to afford a general strategy for producing photoactive diarylethene-based crystalline solids.

Abstract
Photomechanical crystals composed of three-dimensionally ordered and densely packed photochromes hold promise for high-performance photochemical actuators. However, bulk crystals with high structural ordering are severely limited in their flexibility, resulting in poor processibility and a tendency to fragment upon light exposure, while previous nano- or microcrystalline composites have lacked global alignment. Here we demonstrate a photon-fuelled macroscopic actuator consisting of diarylethene microcrystals in a polyethylene terephthalate host matrix. These microcrystals survive large deformations and show a high degree of three-dimensional ordering dictated by the anisotropic polyethylene terephthalate, which critically also has a similar stiffness. Overall, these ordered and compliant composites exhibit rapid response times, sustain a performance of over at least hundreds of cycles and generate work densities exceeding those of single crystals. Our composites represent the state-of-the-art for photochemical actuators and enable properties unattainable by single crystals, such as controllable, reversible and abrupt jumping (photosalient behaviour).

Abstract
AbstractIrregular spatial distribution of photon transmission through a photochromic crystal photoisomerized by a local optical near-field excitation was previously reported, which manifested complex branching processes via the interplay of material deformation and near-field photon transfer therein. Furthermore, by combining such naturally constructed complex photon transmission with a simple photon detection protocol, Schubert polynomials, the foundation of versatile permutation operations in mathematics, have been generated. In this study, we demonstrated an order recognition algorithm inspired by Schubert calculus using optical near-field statistics via nanometre-scale photochromism. More specifically, by utilizing Schubert polynomials generated via optical near-field patterns, we showed that the order of slot machines with initially unknown reward probability was successfully recognized. We emphasized that, unlike conventional algorithms, the proposed principle does not estimate the reward probabilities but exploits the inversion relations contained in the Schubert polynomials. To quantitatively evaluate the impact of Schubert polynomials generated from an optical near-field pattern, order recognition performances were compared with uniformly distributed and spatially strongly skewed probability distributions, where the optical near-field pattern outperformed the others. We found that the number of singularities contained in Schubert polynomials and that of the given problem or considered environment exhibited a clear correspondence, indicating that superior order recognition is attained when the singularity of the given situations is presupposed. This study paves way for physical computing through the interplay of complex natural processes and mathematical insights gained by Schubert calculus.

Abstract
Real-time dynamics of the electronically excited open-ring isomer of 1,2-bis(2-methylbenzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene (BTF6) and 1,2-bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (PTF6) molecules was investigated using a set-up that associates a molecular beam, femtosecond lasers and velocity map imaging. The molecules were either free in the gas phase or bound to an argon cluster. DFT and TDDFT calculations were performed on BTF6. The calculated vertical excitation energies indicate an excitation by the pump laser towards a superposition of S5 and S6 states. The free molecule dynamics was found to follow a three wavepacket model. One describes the parallel conformer (P) of these molecules. It is unreactive with respect to the ring closure reaction which is responsible for the photochromic property of these molecules. It has no observable decay at the experiment time scale (up to 350 ps). The other two wavepackets describe the reactive antiparallel conformer (AP). They are formed by an early splitting of the wavepacket that was launched initially by the pump laser. They can be considered as generated by excitation of different, essentially uncoupled, deformation modes. They subsequently evolve along independent pathways. One is directed ballistically towards a conical intersection (CI) and decays through the CI to a potential energy surface where it can no longer be detected. The other fraction of the wavepacket decays also towards undetected states but in this case the driving mechanism is a non-adiabatic electronic relaxation within a potential well of the energy surfaces where it was launched. When BTF6 and PTF6 molecules are bound to an argon cluster, the same three wavepacket model applies. The vibronic relaxation timespan is enhanced by a factor 5 and a larger fraction of AP conformers follows this pathway. In contrast, the time constant associated with the ballistic movement is enhanced by only a factor of 2.

Abstract
Tuning metal oxidation states in metal-organic framework (MOF) nodes by switching between two discrete linker photoisomers via an external stimulus was probed for the first time. On the examples of three novel photochromic copper-based frameworks, we demonstrated the capability of switching between +2 and +1 oxidation states, on demand. In addition to crystallographic methods used for material characterization, the role of the photochromic moieties for tuning the oxidation state was probed via conductivity measurements, cyclic voltammetry, and electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies. We confirmed the reversible photoswitching activity including photoisomerization rate determination of spiropyran- and diarylethene-containing linkers in extended frameworks, resulting in changes in metal oxidation states as a function of alternating excitation wavelengths. To elucidate the switching process between two states, the photoisomerization quantum yield of photochromic MOFs was determined for the first time. Overall, the introduced noninvasive concept of metal oxidation state modulation on the examples of stimuli-responsive MOFs foreshadows a new pathway for alternation of material properties toward targeted applications.

Abstract
Diarylethene (DTE) has been widely used in fluorescence probes, molecular logic gates, optical data-storage devices owing to the excellent photochromic property, while constructing high-performance photochromic DTE in aqueous media remains a big challenge. Herein we present several host-guest systems formed between cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n], n=7, 8, 10) and two water-soluble DTE derivatives 1 and 2. It was found that host-guest interactions not only affect the photophysical properties of photochromic guests, but also make great differences on the photoreaction process. Different host-guest binding behaviors also lead to different effects on the photochromic properties of guests. In the presence of CB[n], both 1 and 2 showed enhanced emission and higher fluorescence quenching ratio at photostationary state. Besides, CB[10]⋅1 exhibited faster response rate in cyclization reaction and better photofatigue resistance than free 1 in aqueous solution, while the supramolecular assembly of (CB[8])n ⋅(2)n showed slower response rate in both directions of the reversible photoreaction. Besides, the photofatigue resistance of 2 can be greatly improved through binding with CB[7]. Our results suggest that host-guest interactions could be an efficient way to improve photochromic properties of DTE in aqueous solution.

Abstract
Photoswitchable diarylethenes (DAEs), over years of intense fundamental and applied research, have been established among the most commonly chosen molecular photoswitches, often employed as controlling units in molecular devices and smart materials. At the same time, providing reliable explanation for their photophysical behavior, especially the mechanism of the photo-cycloreversion transformation, turned out to be a highly challenging task. Herein, we investigate this mechanism in detail by means of multireference semi-empirical quantum chemistry calculations, allowing, for the first time, for a balanced treatment of the static and dynamic correlation effects, both playing a crucial role in DAE photochemistry. In the course of our study, we find the second singlet excited state of double electronic-excitation character to be the key to understanding the nature of the photo-cycloreversion transformation in DAE molecular photoswitches.

Abstract
Photo-switching emission of photochromic materials has paramount importance in the field of optoelectronics. Here, we report synthesis and characterization of a dithienylethene (DTE) based photochromic low molecular weight gelator (LMWG) and self-assembly with lanthanide (Eu3+ and Tb3+) ions to form a photochromic coordination polymer gel (pcCPG). Based on DTE ring opening and closing, the TPY-DTE gel shuttles from pale-yellow coloured TPY-DTE-O to dark blue coloured TPY-DTE-C and vice versa upon irradiating with UV and visible light, respectively, and both the photoisomers show distinct optical properties. Furthermore, integration of Eu3+ and Tb3+ lanthanides with TPY-DTE resulted in red and green emissive Eu-pcCPG (Q.Y. = 18.7% for the open state) and Tb-pcCPG (Q.Y. = 23.4% for the open state), respectively. The photoisomers of Eu-pcCPG exhibit photo-switchable spherical to fibrous reversible morphology transformation. Importantly, an excellent spectral overlap of the Eu3+ centred emission and absorption of DTE in the closed form offered photo-switchable emission properties in Eu-pcCPG based on pcFRET (energy transfer efficiency >94%). Further, owing to the high processability and photo-switchable emission, the Eu-pcCPG has been utilized as invisible security ink for protecting confidential information. Interestingly, mixed Eu3+/Tb3+ pcCPG exhibited photo-modulated multi-spectrum chromism reversibly where the colour changes from yellow, blue, and red to green and vice versa under suitable light irradiation.

Abstract
Photovoltaic devices that switch color depending on illumination conditions may find application in future smart window applications. Here a photochromic diarylethene molecule is used as sensitizer in a ternary bulk heterojunction blend, employing poly(4-butylphenyldiphenylamine) (poly-TPD) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) for the transport of holes and electrons, respectively. Sandwiched between two electrodes, the blend creates a photochromic photovoltaic device that changes color, light absorption, and photon-to-electron conversion efficiency in the visible spectral range after having been illuminated with UV light.

Abstract
Generation of irregular time series based on physical processes is indispensable in computing and artificial intelligence. In this report, we propose and demonstrate the generation of Schubert polynomials, which are the foundation of versatile permutations in mathematics, via optical near-field processes introduced in a photochromic crystal of diarylethene combined with a simple photon detection protocol. Optical near-field excitation on the surface of a photochromic single crystal yields a chain of local photoisomerization, forming a complex pattern on the opposite side of the crystal. The incoming photon travels through the nanostructured photochromic crystal, and the exit position of the photon exhibits a versatile pattern. We emulated trains of photons based on the optical pattern experimentally observed through double-probe optical near-field microscopy, where the detection position was determined based on a simple protocol, leading to Schubert matrices corresponding to Schubert polynomials. The versatility and correlations of the generated Schubert matrices could be reconfigured in either a soft or hard manner by adjusting the photon detection sensitivity. This is the first study of Schubert polynomial generation via physical processes or nanophotonics, paving the way for future nano-scale intelligence devices and systems.

Abstract
The colorimetric detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated for the quick and easy identification of likely oil spill offenders. In this new technology, photochromic compounds were used to sense PAHs by varying their photoswitching capacity. To that end, three photochromes were designed and showed varying degrees of photoswitching inhibition, depending on PAH analyte, photochrome, and excitation wavelength. PAH mixtures that mimic oil spills showed the same varying response and demonstrated the accuracy of this technology. To prove the applicability of this technology, an array was assembled, using the three photochromes at three excitation wavelengths, and tested against authentic crude oil samples. Not only could these samples be differentiated, but also weathering of two distinctly different oil samples showed limited variation in response, demonstrating that this may be a viable technique for in situ oil identification.

Abstract
Photocyclization reaction dynamics of an inverse type diarylethene derivative was investigated in alkane solutions by means of ultrafast laser spectroscopies. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy showed that the Franck-Condon state formed by photoexcitation is geometrically relaxed to a transient species within 100 fs and subsequently the cyclization process takes place with a time constant of 36 ps. This time constant is much longer than those in normal type derivatives. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements with the aid of quantum chemical calculations revealed that there exist three kinds of conformers, one parallel and two anti-parallel forms, in the ground state. One of the anti-parallel conformers undergoes the cyclization reaction, while the other two conformers are nonreactive species and their major relaxation processes are radiative decay and intersystem crossing into the triplet states. The triplet states thus formed no longer undergo the cyclization reaction in the late time region.

Abstract
Coupling photochemistry with flow microreactors enables novel synthesis strategies with higher efficiencies compared to batch systems. Improving the reproducibility and understanding of the photochemical reaction mechanisms requires quantitative tools such as chemical actinometry. However, the choice of actinometric systems which can be applied in microreactors is limited, due to their short optical pathlength in combination with a large received photon flux. Furthermore, actinometers for the characterization of reactions driven by visible light between 500 and 600 nm (e.g. photosensitized oxidations) are largely missing. In this paper, we propose a new visible-light actinometer which can be applied in flow microreactors between 480 and 620 nm. This actinometric system is based on the photoisomerization reaction of a diarylethene derivative from its closed to the open form. The experimental protocol for actinometric measurements is facile and characterized by excellent reproducibility and we also present an analytical estimation to calculate the photon flux. Furthermore, we propose an experimental methodology to determine the average pathlength in microreactors using actinometric measurements. In the context of a growing research interest on using flow microreactors for photochemical reactions, the proposed visible-light actinometer facilitates the determination of the received photon flux and average pathlength in confined geometries.

Abstract
Photoswitching and fluorescent properties of sulfone derivatives of 1,2-bis(2-alkyl-4-methyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene, 1–5, having methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, and i-butyl substituents at the reactive carbons (2- and 2′-positions) of the thiophene 1,1-dioxide rings were studied. Diarylethenes 1–5 underwent isomerization reactions between open-ring and closed-ring forms upon alternate irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) and visible light and showed fluorescence in the closed-ring forms. The alkyl substitution at the reactive carbons affects the fluorescent property of the closed-ring isomers. The closed-ring isomers 2b–5b with ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, and i-butyl substituents show higher fluorescence quantum yields than 1b with methyl substituents. In polar solvents, the fluorescence quantum yield of 1b markedly decreases, while 2b–5b maintain the relatively high fluorescence quantum yields. Although the cycloreversion quantum yields of the derivatives with methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, and i-propyl substituents are quite low and in the order of 10−5, introduction of i-butyl substituents was found to increase the yield up to the order of 10−3. These results indicate that appropriate alkyl substitution at the reactive carbons is indispensable for properly controlling the photoswitching and fluorescent properties of the photoswitchable fluorescent diarylethenes, which are potentially applicable to super-resolution fluorescence microscopies.

Abstract
Intramolecularly bridged diarylethenes exhibit improved photocyclization quantum yields because the anti-syn isomerization that originally suppresses photocyclization in classical diarylethenes is blocked. Experimentally, three possible channels have been proposed to interpret experimental observation, but many details of photochromic mechanism remain ambiguous. In this work we have employed a series of electronic structure methods (OM2/MRCI, DFT, TDDFT, RI-CC2, DFT/MRCI, and CASPT2) to comprehensively study excited state properties, photocyclization, and photoreversion dynamics of 1,2-dicyano[2,2]metacyclophan-1-ene. On the basis of optimized stationary points and minimum-energy conical intersections, we have refined experimentally proposed photochromic mechanism. Only an S1/S0 minimum-energy conical intersection is located; thus, we can exclude the third channel experimentally proposed. In addition, we find that both photocyclization and photoreversion processes use the same S1/S0 conical intersection to decay the S1 system to the S0 state, so we can unify the remaining two channels into one. These new insights are verified by our OM2/MRCI nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. The S1 excited-state lifetimes of photocyclization and photoreversion are estimated to be 349 and 453 fs, respectively, which are close to experimentally measured values: 240 ± 60 and 250 fs in acetonitrile solution. The present study not only interprets experimental observations and refines previously proposed mechanism but also provides new physical insights that are valuable for future experiments.

Abstract
The potential implication of photochromic materials with absorption and reactivity in the near-infrared region is far-reaching. In this work, three novel bisindole-containing diarylethene derivatives 1o–3o have been successfully synthesized and their photochromic behaviour exhibits a strong bathochromic shift effect compared with bisbenzothiophene diarylethene 4o. These new bisindole-diarylethene compounds 1o–3o are highly sensitive to photo-stimuli both in solution and in poly(methyl methacrylate) films. Besides, 1o–3o exhibit an excellent reversible fluorescence switching behavior modulated by optical stimuli.

Abstract
Through the design of molecules and the modification of structures, ten novel pyrazolone derivatives containing 3-cyanobenzal have been synthesized. They are 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-(3-cyanobenzal)-5-hydroxypyrazole thiosemicarbazone (1)/4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (2)/4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (3)/4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (4)/4-phenylsemicarbazone (5) and 1,3-diphenyl-4-(3-cyanobenzal)-5-hydroxypyrazole thiosemicarbazone (6)/4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (7)/4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (8)/4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (9)/4-phenylsemicarbazone (10), in which seven compounds (1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 10) have photoisomerization behaviors. Their structures, photoisomerization properties, and first-order kinetics were investigated. The results show that the compounds 2, 3, 7 and 8 exhibit irreversible photoisomerization behaviors, the other three compounds have reversible photoisomerization behaviors under 365nm light irradiation and heat. But only 1,3-diphenyl-4-(3-cyanobenzal)-5-hydroxypyrazole 4-phenylsemicarbazone (10) exhibits good photochromic properties and fatigue resistance. Moreover, effects of various temperatures on the thermal bleaching reaction for 10 and substituent groups on the photochromic phenomenon are discussed.

Abstract
The cycloreversion quantum yields of compounds 1b and 2b increased upon irradiation with light at shorter wavelengths. The irradiation wavelength dependence is ascribed to the energy barrier on the 2A potential energy surface in the excited electronic state.

Abstract
A scanning tunneling microscopy study of a photochromic diarylethene adsorbed on Au and Cu reveals the reversal of thermodynamic stability between its two isomers compared to the gas phase, in solution, and its single crystal, which could result from the molecule-substrate interaction such as charge transfer and hybridization.

Abstract
Photochromic diarylethenes (DAEs) are among the most promising molecular switching systems for future molecular electronics. Numerous derivatives have been synthesized recently, and experimental quantum yields (QYs) have been reported for two categories of them. Although the QY is one of the most important properties in various applications, it is also the most difficult property to predict before a molecule is actually synthesized. We have previously reported preliminary theoretical studies on what determines the QYs in both categories of DAE derivatives. Here, reflecting theoretical analyses of potential energy surfaces and recent experimental results, a rational explanation of the general guiding principle for QY design is presented for future molecular design.
