Abstract
Understanding physicochemical property changes based on reaction kinetics is required to design materials exhibiting desired functions at arbitrary timings. In this work, we investigated the photodimerization of anthracene derivatives in single crystals. Single crystals of 9-cyanoanthracene (9CA) and 9-anthraldehyde (9AA) exhibited reaction front propagation on the optical length scale, while 9-methylanthracene and 9-acetylanthracene crystals underwent spatially homogeneous conversion. Moreover, the sigmoidal behavior in the absorbance change associated with the reaction was much pronounced in the case of 9CA and 9AA and correlated with the observation of heterogeneous reaction progress. A kinetic analysis based on the Finke-Watzky model showed that the effective quantum yield of the photochemical reaction changes by more than an order of magnitude during the course of the reaction in 9CA and 9AA. Both the reaction front propagation and nonlinear kinetic behavior could be rationalized in terms of the difference in the cooperativity of the reactions. We propose a plausible mechanism for the heterogeneous reaction progress in single crystals that depends on the magnitude of the conformational change required for reaction. Our results provide useful information to understand the connection between photochemical reaction progress in the crystalline phase and the dynamic changes in the physicochemical properties.

Abstract
As an important organic photofunctional material, spirooxazine (SO) usually does not exhibit photochromism in the solid state since the intermolecular π-π stacking impedes photoisomerization. Developing photochromic SO in the solid state is crucial for practical applications but is still full of challenges. Here, a series of spirooxazine derivatives (SO1-SO4) with bulky aromatic substituents at the 4- and 7-positions of the skeleton, which provide them with a large volume with which to undergo solid-state photochromism under mild conditions, is designed and synthesized. All the compounds SO1-SO4 exhibit tunable solid photochromism without ground colors, excellent fatigue resistance, and high thermal stability. Notably, it takes only 15 s for SO4 to reach the saturation of absorption intensity, thought to represent the fastest solid-state photoresponse of spirooxazines. X-ray crystal structures of the intermediate compound SO0 and the products SO1-SO2 as well as computational studies suggest that the bulky aromatic groups can lead to a hypochromic effect, allowing for the photochromism of SO in the solid state. The ideal photochromic properties of these spirooxazines open a new avenue for their applications in UV printing, quick response code, and related fields.

Abstract
Photochromic compounds of the spiropyran family have two main isomers capable of inter-switching with UV or visible light. In the current review, we discuss recent advances in the synthesis, investigation of properties, and applications of spiropyran derivatives. Spiropyrans of the indoline series are in focus as the most promising representatives of multi-sensitive spirocyclic compounds, which can be switched by a number of external stimuli, including light, temperature, pH, presence of metal ions, and mechanical stress. Particular attention is paid to the structural features of molecules, their influence on photochromic properties, and the reactions taking place during isomerization, as the understanding of the structure-property relationships will rationalize the synthesis of compounds with predetermined characteristics. The main prospects for applications of spiropyrans in such fields as smart material production, molecular electronics and nanomachinery, sensing of environmental and biological molecules, and photopharmacology are also discussed.

Abstract
Laser was invented in 1960 and soon introduced to chemistry research. We started time-resolved spectroscopy and photochemistry and initial trial was focused to nanosecond and then picosecond electronic absorption spectroscopy for studying molecular electronic excited states, charge separation in molecular complexes, and intermolecular electron transfer in solution. We considered that not only time-resolved but also space-resolved chemistry would be important for future laser-based chemistry and combined pulsed lasers with optical microscopes. Spectroscopy, photochemistry, ablation, and spatial arrangement of single microparticles and microdroplets in solution were carried out. Further we shifted from micro to nano and opened a new field covering spectroscopy, ablation, phase transition, crystallization, patterning, and fabrication. The progress is summarized and discussed as time-resolved nano spectroscopy, ablation nano dynamics, and optical force chemistry.

Abstract
The optical control of spin state is of interest in the development of spintronic materials for data processing and storage technologies. Photomagnetic effects at the single-molecule level have recently been observed in the thin film state at 300 K in photochromic cobalt dioxolenes. Visible light excitation leads to ring-closure of a photochromic spirooxazine bound to a cobalt dioxolene, which leads to generation of a high magnetization state. Formation of the photomagnetic state occurs through a photoisomerization-induced spin-charge excited-state process and is dictated by the spirooxazine ligand dynamics. Here, we report a mechanistic investigation by ultrafast spectroscopy in the UV-vis region of the photochemical ring-closing process in the parent spirooxazine, azahomoadamantylphenanthroline spirooxazine, and the photomagnetic spirooxazine cobalt-dioxolene complex. The cobalt appears to stabilize a photomerocycanine transient intermediate, presumably the TCC isomer, formed along the ground-state potential energy surface (PES). Structural changes associated with the TCC isomer induces formation of the high-spin Co(II) form, suggesting that magnetization dymanics can occur along the excited-state PES, leading to ultrafast switching on the ps time scale. We demonstrate the full ring closure of the spiro-oxazine ligand is not required to switch magnetization states which can be induced with a higher yielding isomerization reaction. The ability of this system to undergo optically induced spin state switching on the ps time scale in the solid state makes it a promising canididate for resistive nonvolatile memory technologies.

Abstract
Nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy was used to study the photochemical ring-opening reaction for a 6-nitroindolinospiropyran (SP1) in solution and in nanocrystalline (NC) suspension at 298 K. We measured the kinetics in argon purged and air saturated acetonitrile and found that the presence of oxygen affected two out of the three components of the kinetic decay at 440 nm. These are assigned to the triplet excited states of the Z- and E-merocyanines (3Z-MC* and 3E-MC*). In contrast, a long-lived growth component at 550 nm and the decay of a band centered at 590 nm showed no dependence on oxygen and are assigned, respectively, to the ground state Z- and E-merocyanines (Z-MC0 and E-MC0). Laser flash photolysis studies performed in NC suspensions initially showed a very broad, featureless absorption spectrum that decayed uniformly for ca. 70 ns before revealing a more defined spectrum that persisted for greater than 4 ms and is consistent with a mixture of the more stable Z- and E-MC0 structures. We performed quantum mechanical calculations on the interconversion of E- and Z-MCs on the S0 and S1 potential energy surfaces. The computed UV-vis spectra for a scan along the Z → E interconversion reaction coordinate show substantial absorptivity from 300-600 nm, which suggests that the broad, featureless transient absorption spectrum results from the contribution of the transition structure and other high-energy species during the Z to E isomerization.

Abstract
The photoresponsive phase separation of a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-spironaphthoxazine methacryloyl-co-allyl-2-(2,6-bis((E)-4-(diphenylamino)styryl)-4H-pyran-4-ylidene)-2-cyanoacetate) random copolymer, i.e., poly(NIPAAm-co-SPO-co-fluorophore), in water-in-oil (W/O) droplets is described. The photoresponsive aqueous droplets were generated in the coflow regime of a simple tubular microfluidic device. The phase separation of the copolymer in the W/O droplets was induced by UV light at 365 nm and was affected significantly by the presence of 2,2-diethoxyacetophenone (DEAP) and sorbitan monooleate (Span 80). When the droplets were subjected to UV irradiation for more than 2 min, the phase-separated copolymer was transferred completely from the aqueous droplet to the continuous phase of hexadecane. The phase separation arises from the photoisomerization shifting the spiro to the merocyanine form of the SPO pendant group in the copolymer, which in turn reduces the hydrophilicity of the copolymer via attractive hydrogen-bonding interactions between the merocyanine group and hydrophobic additives, i.e., Span 80, DEAP, and some stable fragments derived from the photocleavage of DEAP under UV irradiation. These interactions cause the copolymer to associate with the additives and then accelerate the phase separation of the copolymer and subsequent phase transfer of copolymer aggregates. The separate effects of DEAP and Span 80 were also investigated by UV spectrophotometric analysis of the rate coefficient of the reverse transformation (merocyanine to spiro) of the photochromic monomer. We propose a mechanism of phase separation of the copolymer in the W/O droplet based on the NMR and GC-MASS analyses of DEAP.

Abstract
Fluorescent photochromic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with spironaphthoxazine (SPO) and D-π-A type pyran-base fluorescent dye as a fluorophore was synthesized by typical free radical copolymerization. The poly(MMA-co-SPO-co-fluorophore) in both solution and solid film exhibited excellent photoregulated fluorescence switching behavior and reversible modulation of fluorescence intensity using alternating irradiation with UV and visible light. The poly(MMA-co-SPO-co-fluorophore) also showed viscosity and conductivity switching behaviors along with photoresponse.

Abstract
Microcrystalline powders of spirooxazine and spiropyran compounds do not show photocoloration under steady-state illumination, whereas they undergo photochromism on intense femtosecond laser-pulse excitation. We investigated the characteristic mechanism of the crystalline photochromism by studying the photocoloration of spironaphthooxazine (SNO) and its chloro-substituted derivative (Cl-SNO) with our femtosecond diffuse-reflectance spectroscopic system. In particular, femtosecond double-pulse excitation using 390+780-nm pulses and 390+390-nm pulses, with a variable time interval between the two pulses, was applied to reveal an intermediate species involved in the photocoloration. Although 780-nm excitation of an intermediate produced by 390-nm excitation did not lead to isomerization, the 390+390-nm excitation resulted in photocoloration. The yield for SNO decreased on increasing the interval from 40 ps to 5 ns, while that for Cl-SNO was constant. The photocoloration mechanism in the crystalline phase is considered from the viewpoint of the time-dependent density of short-lived transient species, and it is concluded that cooperative interactions of excited states and nonplanar open forms play an important role in femtosecond laser-induced photochromism in these crystals.
