Distance Dependence of Electron Tunneling through Self-Assembled Monolayers Measured by Conducting Probe Atomic Force Microscopy: Unsaturated versus Saturated Molecular Junctions

Estimating the Number of Molecules in Molecular Junctions Merely Based on the Low Bias Tunneling Conductance at Variable Temperature

Temperature (T) dependent conductance G=G(T) data measured in molecular junctions are routinely taken as evidence for a two-step hopping mechanism. The present paper emphasizes that this is not necessarily the case. A curve of lnG versus 1/T decreasing almost linearly (Arrhenius-like regime) and eventually switching to a nearly horizontal plateau (Sommerfeld regime), or possessing a slope gradually decreasing with increasing 1/T is fully compatible with a single-step tunneling mechanism. The results for the dependence of G on T presented include both analytical exact and accurate approximate formulas and numerical simulations. These theoretical results are general, also in the sense that they are not limited, e.g., to the (single molecule electromigrated (SET) or large area EGaIn) fabrication platforms, which are chosen for exemplification merely in view of the available experimental data needed for analysis. To be specific, we examine in detail transport measurements for molecular junctions based on ferrocene (Fc). As a particularly important finding, we show how the present analytic formulas for G=G(T) can be utilized to compute the ratio f=Aeff/An between the effective and nominal areas of large area Fc-based junctions with an EGaIn top electrode. Our estimate of f≈0.6×10-4 is comparable with previously reported values based on completely different methods for related large area molecular junctions.

Thermopower in Transition from Tunneling to Hopping

The Seebeck effect of a molecular junction in a hopping regime or tunneling-to-hopping transition remains uncertain. This paper describes the Seebeck effect in molecular epitaxy films (OPI_n where n = 1-9) based on imine condensation between an aryl amine and aldehyde and investigates how the Seebeck coefficient (S, μV/K) varies at the crossover region. The S value of OPI_n linearly increased with increasing the molecular length (d, nm), ranging from 7.2 to 38.0 μV/K. The increasing rate changed from 0.99 to 0.38 μV·K^-1 Å^-1 at d = 3.4 nm (OPI₄). Combined experimental and theoretical studies indicated that such a change stems from a tunneling-to-hopping transition, and the small but detectable length-dependence of thermopower in the long molecules originates from the gradual reduction of the tunneling contribution to the broadening of molecular orbital energy level, rather than its relative position to the Fermi level. Our work helps to bridge the gap between bulk and nanoscale thermoelectric systems.

Electron Transfer at Quantum Dot–Metal Oxide Interfaces for Solar Energy Conversion

Electron transfer at a donor–acceptor quantum dot–metal oxide interface is a process fundamentally relevant to solar energy conversion architectures as, e.g., sensitized solar cells and solar fuels schemes. As kinetic competition at these technologically relevant interfaces largely determines device performance, this Review surveys several aspects linking electron transfer dynamics and device efficiency; this correlation is done for systems aiming for efficiencies up to and above the ∼33% efficiency limit set by Shockley and Queisser for single gap devices. Furthermore, we critically comment on common pitfalls associated with the interpretation of kinetic data obtained from current methodologies and experimental approaches, and finally, we highlight works that, to our judgment, have contributed to a better understanding of the fundamentals governing electron transfer at quantum dot–metal oxide interfaces.

Dipolar Noise in Fluorinated Molecular Wires

We demonstrate a strategy to directly map and quantify the effects of dipole formation on electrical transports and noises in the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of molecular wires. In this method, the SAM patterns of fluorinated molecules with dipole moments were prepared on conducting substrates, and a conducting probe in contact-mode atomic force microscopy was utilized to map currents and noises through the probe on the molecular patterns. The maps were analyzed to extract the characteristic parameters of dipolar noises in SAMs, and the results were compared with those of hydrogenated molecular patterns without dipole moments. At rather low bias conditions, the fluorinated molecular junctions exhibited a tunneling conduction and a resistance value comparable to that of the hydrogenated molecules with a six-times-longer length, which was attributed to stronger dipoles formation in fluorinated molecules. Interestingly, conductance (G) in different regions of fluorinated molecular patterns exhibited a strong correlation with a noise power spectral density of S_I/I² like S_I/I² ∝ G^-2, which can be explained by enhanced barrier fluctuations produced by the dipoles of fluorinated molecules. Furthermore, we observed that the noise power spectral density of fluorinated molecules showed an anomalous frequency (f) dependence like S_I/I² ∝ 1/f^1.7, possibly due to the slowing down of the tunneling of carriers from increased barrier fluctuations. In rather high bias conditions, conductions in both hydrogenated and fluorinated molecules showed a transition from tunneling to thermionic charge transports. Our results provide important insights into the effects of dipoles on mesoscopic transport and resistance-fluctuation in molecules and could have a significant impact on the fundamental understanding and applications in this area.

Amine-Anchored Aromatic Self-Assembled Monolayer Junction: Structure and Electric Transport Properties

We studied the structure and transport properties of aromatic amine self-assembled monolayers (NH₂-SAMs) on an Au surface. The oligophenylene and oligoacene amines with variable lengths can form a densely packed and uniform monolayer under proper assembly conditions. Molecular junctions incorporating an eutectic Ga-In (EGaIn) top electrode were used to characterize the charge transport properties of the amine monolayer. The current density J of the junction decreases exponentially with the molecular length (d), as J = J₀ exp(-βd), which is a sign of tunneling transport, with indistinguishable values of J₀ and β for NH₂-SAMs of oligophenylene and oligoacene, indicating a similar molecule-electrode contact and tunneling barrier for two groups of molecules. Compared with the oligophenylene and oligoacene molecules with thiol (SH) as the anchor group, a similar β value (∼0.35 Å^-1) of the aromatic NH₂-SAM suggests a similar tunneling barrier, while a lower (by 2 orders of magnitude) injection current J₀ is attributed to lower electronic coupling Γ of the amine group with the electrode. These observations are further supported by single-level tunneling model fitting. Our study here demonstrates the NH₂-SAMs can work as an effective active layer for molecular junctions, and provide key physical parameters for the charge transport, paving the road for their applications in functional devices.

A review of oligo(arylene ethynylene) derivatives in molecular junctions

Oligo(arylene ethynylene) (OAE) derivatives are the "workhorse" molecules of molecular electronics. Their ease of synthesis and flexibility of functionalisation mean that a diverse array of OAE molecular wires have been designed, synthesised and studied theoretically and experimentally in molecular junctions using both single-molecule and ensemble methods. This review summarises the breadth of molecular designs that have been investigated with emphasis on structure-property relationships with respect to the electronic conductance of OAEs. The factors considered include molecular length, connectivity, conjugation, (anti)aromaticity, heteroatom effects and quantum interference (QI). Growing interest in the thermoelectric properties of OAE derivatives, which are expected to be at the forefront of research into organic thermoelectric devices, is also explored.

Fabrication of metallic and non-metallic top electrodes for large-area molecular junctions

Molecular junctions have proven invaluable tools through which to explore the electronic properties of molecules and molecular monolayers. In seeking to develop a viable molecular electronics based technology it becomes essential to be able to reliably create larger area molecular junctions by contacting molecular monolayers to both bottom and top electrodes. The assembly of monolayers onto a conducting substrate by self-assembly, Langmuir-Blodgett and other methods is well established. However, the deposition of top-contact electrodes without film penetration or damage from the growing electrode material has proven problematic. This Review highlights the challenges of this area, and presents a selective overview of methods that have been used to solve these issues.

Investigating the use of conducting oligomers and redox molecules in CdS-MoFeP biohybrids

In this work we report the effect of incorporating conducting oligophenylenes and a cobaltocene-based redox mediator on photodriven electron transfer between thioglycolic acid (TGA) capped CdS nanorods (NR) and the native nitrogenase MoFe protein (MoFeP) by following the reduction of H⁺ to H₂. First, we demonstrate that the addition of benzidine-a conductive diphenylene- to TGA-CdS and MoFeP increased catalytic activity by up to 3-fold as compared to CdS-MoFeP alone. In addition, in comparing the use of oligophenylenes composed of one (p-phenylenediamine), two (benzidine) or three (4,4''-diamino-p-terphenyl)phenylene groups, the largest gain in H₂ was observed with the addition of benzidine and the lowest with phenylenediamine. As a comparison to the conductive oligophenylenes, a cobaltocene-based redox mediator was also tested with the TGA-CdS NRs and MoFeP. However, adding either cobaltocene diacid or diamine caused negligible gains in H₂ production and at higher concentrations, caused a significant decrease. Agarose gel electrophoresis revealed little to no detectable interaction between benzidine and TGA-CdS but strong binding between cobaltocene and TGA-CdS. These results suggest that the tight binding of the cobaltocene mediator to CdS may hinder electron transfer between CdS and MoFe and cause the mediator to undergo continuous reduction/oxidation events at the surface of CdS.

Achieving Ultralow, Zero, and Inverted Tunneling Attenuation Coefficients in Molecular Wires with Extended Conjugation

Molecular tunnel junctions are organic devices miniaturized to the molecular scale. They serve as a versatile toolbox that can systematically examine charge transport behaviors at the atomic level. The electrical conductance of the molecular wire that bridges the two electrodes in a junction is significantly influenced by its chemical structure, and an intrinsically poor conductance is a major barrier for practical applications toward integrating individual molecules into electronic circuitry. Therefore, highly conjugated molecular wires are attractive as active components for the next-generation electronic devices, owing to the narrow highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest occupied molecular orbital gaps provided by their extended π-building blocks. This article aims to highlight the significance of highly conductive molecular wires in molecular electronics, the structures of which are inspired from conductive organic polymers, and presents a body of discussion on molecular wires exhibiting ultralow, zero, or inverted attenuation of tunneling probability at different lengths, along with future directions.

Investigation of the Interfacial Electron Transfer Kinetics in Ferrocene-Terminated Oligophenyleneimine Self-Assembled Monolayers

In this article, the synthesis, characterization, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements are reported for ferrocene-terminated oligophenyleneimine (OPI_Fc) and ferrocene-terminated conjugation-broken oligophenyleneimine (CB-OPI_Fc) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in two different electrolytes, namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-bis (trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl) imide (EMITFSI) ionic liquid and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (Bu₄NPF₆) in acetonitrile (0.1 M solution). The SAMs were synthesized on Au surfaces by the sequential imine condensation reactions. CV was used to investigate the kinetics of electron transfer (ET) to the ferrocene, and it was observed that the standard ET rate constant (k⁰) is a strong function of the electrolyte nature as well as the chemical composition of the SAM. Interestingly, when 0.1 M Bu₄NPF₆ in acetonitrile was used as the electrolyte, all of the SAMs exhibited quite similar k⁰ values. However, in the case of the ionic liquid, we found that k⁰ dramatically varies for each SAM and trends as OPI 6_Fc > CB3-OPI 6_Fc > CB5-OPI 6_Fc > CB3,5-OPI 6_Fc. We also examined the temperature dependence of ET kinetics for OPI 2_Fc, OPI 4_Fc, OPI 8_Fc, CB3-OPI 6_Fc, CB5-OPI 6_Fc, and CB3,5-OPI 6_Fc SAMs in EMITFSI ionic liquid. It was found that the activation energies of the ET in these SAMs are very similar (∼0.2 eV). Moreover, it was observed that ln k⁰ varies linearly with the molecular length for three SAMs, OPI 2_Fc, OPI 4_Fc, and OPI 8_Fc. These findings suggest that the ET to the ferrocene in OPI_Fc and CB-OPI _Fc SAMs takes place via a direct tunneling mechanism.

Transferrable property relationships between magnetic exchange coupling and molecular conductance

Calculated conductance through Au n -S-Bridge-S-Au n (Bridge = organic σ/π-system) constructs are compared to experimentally-determined magnetic exchange coupling parameters in a series of TpCum,MeZnSQ-Bridge-NN complexes, where TpCum,Me = hydro-tris(3-cumenyl-1-methylpyrazolyl)borate ancillary ligand, Zn = diamagnetic zinc(ii), SQ = semiquinone (S = 1/2), and NN = nitronylnitroxide radical (S = 1/2). We find that there is a nonlinear functional relationship between the biradical magnetic exchange coupling, J D→A, and the computed conductance, g mb. Although different bridge types (monomer vs. dimer) do not lie on the same J D→A vs. g mb, curve, there is a scale invariance between the monomeric and dimeric bridges which shows that the two data sets are related by a proportionate scaling of J D→A. For exchange and conductance mediated by a given bridge fragment, we find that the ratio of distance dependent decay constants for conductance (β g) and magnetic exchange coupling (β J) does not equal unity, indicating that inherent differences in the tunneling energy gaps, Δε, and the bridge-bridge electronic coupling, H BB, are not directly transferrable properties as they relate to exchange and conductance. The results of these observations are described in valence bond terms, with resonance structure contributions to the ground state bridge wavefunction being different for SQ-Bridge-NN and Au n -S-Bridge-S-Au n systems.

A Chemically Soldered Polyoxometalate Single-Molecule Transistor

Polyoxometalates have been proposed in the literature as nanoelectronic components, where they could offer key advantages with their structural versatility and rich electrochemistry. Apart from a few studies on their ensemble behaviour (as monolayers or thin films), this potential remains largely unexplored. We synthesised a pyridyl-capped Anderson-Evans polyoxometalate and used it to fabricate single-molecule junctions, using the organic termini to chemically "solder" a single cluster to two nanoelectrodes. Operating the device in an electrochemical environment allowed us to probe charge transport through different oxidation states of the polyoxometalate, and we report here an efficient three-state transistor behaviour. Conductance data fits a quantum tunnelling mechanism with different charge-transport probabilities through different charge states. Our results show the promise of polyoxometalates in nanoelectronics and give an insight on their single-entity electrochemical behaviour.

Detecting stable adsorbates of (1S)-camphor on Cu(111) with Bayesian optimization

Identifying the atomic structure of organic-inorganic interfaces is challenging with current research tools. Interpreting the structure of complex molecular adsorbates from microscopy images can be difficult, and using atomistic simulations to find the most stable structures is limited to partial exploration of the potential energy surface due to the high-dimensional phase space. In this study, we present the recently developed Bayesian Optimization Structure Search (BOSS) method as an efficient solution for identifying the structure of non-planar adsorbates. We apply BOSS with density-functional theory simulations to detect the stable adsorbate structures of (1S)-camphor on the Cu(111) surface. We identify the optimal structure among eight unique types of stable adsorbates, in which camphor chemisorbs via oxygen (global minimum) or physisorbs via hydrocarbons to the Cu(111) surface. This study demonstrates that new cross-disciplinary tools, such as BOSS, facilitate the description of complex surface structures and their properties, and ultimately allow us to tune the functionality of advanced materials.

Tunable oligo-histidine self-assembled monolayer junction and charge transport by a pH modulated assembly

Histidine works as an important mediator in the charge transport process through proteins via its conjugate side group. It can also stabilize a peptide's secondary structure through hydrogen bonding of the imidazole group. In this study, the conformation of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and the charge transport of the tailor-made oligopeptide hepta-histidine derivative (7-His) were modulated through the pH control of the assembly environment. Histidine is found to be an efficient tunneling mediator in monolayer junctions with an attenuation factor of β = ∼0.5 Å-1. Successful theoretical model fitting indicates a linear increase in the number of tunneling sites as the 7-His SAM thickness increases, following the deprotonation of histidine. Combined with the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) measurements, a modulable charge transport pathway through 7-His with imidazole groups of histidine as tunneling foot stones is revealed. Histidine therefore possesses a large potential for modulable functional (bio)electronic devices.

Charge Transport through Self-Assembled Monolayers of Monoterpenoids

The nature of the processes at the origin of life that selected specific classes of molecules for broad incorporation into cells is controversial. Among those classes selected were polyisoprenoids and their derivatives. This paper tests the hypothesis that polyisoprenoids were early contributors to membranes in part because they (or their derivatives) could facilitate charge transport by quantum tunneling. It measures charge transport across self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of carboxyl-terminated monoterpenoids (O₂ C(C₉ HX)) and alkanoates (O₂ C(C₇ HX)) with different degrees of unsaturation, supported on silver (Ag^TS ) bottom electrodes, with Ga₂ O₃ /EGaIn top electrodes. Measurements of current density of SAMs of linear length-matched hydrocarbons-both saturated and unsaturated-show that completely unsaturated molecules transport charge faster than those that are completely saturated by approximately a factor of ten. This increase in relative rates of charge transport correlates with the number of carbon-carbon double bonds, but not with the extent of conjugation. These results suggest that polyisoprenoids-even fully unsaturated-are not sufficiently good tunneling conductors for their conductivity to have favored them as building blocks in the prebiotic world.

Light-Triggered Boost of Activity of Catalytic Bola-Type Surfactants by a Plasmonic Metal-Support Interaction Effect

The maximization of activity is a general aim in catalysis research. The possibility for light-triggered enhancement of a catalytic process, even if the process is not photochemical in nature, represents an intriguing concept. Here, we present a novel system for the exploration of the latter idea. A surfactant with a catalytically active head group, a protonated polyoxometalate (POM) cluster, is attached to the surface of a gold nanoparticle (Au NP) using thiol coupling chemistry. The distance of the catalytically active center to the gold surface could be adjusted precisely using surfactants containing hydrocarbon chains (C n) of different lengths ( n = 4-10). Radiation with VIS-light has no effect on the catalytic activity of micellar aggregates of the surfactant. The situation changes, as soon as the surfactants have been attached to the Au NPs. The catalytic activity could almost be doubled. It was proven that the effect is caused by coupling the surface plasmon resonance of the Au NPs with the properties of the POM head group. The improvement of activity could only be observed if the excitation wavelength matches the absorption band of the used Au NPs. Furthermore, the shorter the distance between the POM group and the surface of the NP, the stronger is the effect. This phenomenon was explained by lowering the activation energy of the transition state relevant to the catalytic process by the strong electric fields in the vicinity of the surfaces of plasmonic nanoparticles. Because the catalytic enhancement is wavelength-selective, one can imagine the creation of complex systems in the future, a system of differently sized NPs, each responsible for a different catalytic step and activated by light of different colors.

Unidirectional Real-Time Photoswitching of Diarylethene Molecular Monolayer Junctions with Multilayer Graphene Electrodes

We fabricate and characterize vertical molecular junctions consisting of self-assembled monolayers of diarylethene (DAE) contacted by a multilayer graphene (MLG) electrode on the top and gold on the bottom. The DAE molecular junctions show two stable electrical states, a closed state (high conductance) or an open state (low conductance), which are created upon illumination with UV or visible light, respectively. For the Au-DAE-MLG junction structure, we observe that the current levels between the two conductance states are separated by 2 orders of magnitude. However, in a real-time measurement, we observe only unidirectional switching behavior from the open to the closed state.

Indication of quantum mechanical electron transport in human substantia nigra tissue from conductive atomic force microscopy analysis

Neuromelanin and ferritin in dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra have a distribution and density that is similar to disordered arrays of quantum dots in photovoltaic devices, which have been experimentally shown to conduct electric energy using quantum mechanical electron transport mechanisms. Conductive atomic force microscopy tests were performed on human substantia nigra tissue at room temperature, to determine whether evidence of electron transport is present. The test results presented here provide evidence of quantum mechanical electron transport from ferritin and neuromelanin at levels that may be sufficient to cause or contribute to generation of action potentials.

Nonconjugated Hydrocarbons as Rigid-Linear Motifs: Isosteres for Material Sciences and Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry

Nonconjugated hydrocarbons, like bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane, bicyclo[2.2.2]octane, triptycene, and cubane are a unique class of rigid linkers. Due to their similarity in size and shape they are useful mimics of classic benzene moieties in drugs, so-called bioisosteres. Moreover, they also fulfill an important role in material sciences as linear linkers, in order to arrange various functionalities in a defined spatial manner. In this Review article, recent developments and usages of these special, rectilinear systems are discussed. Furthermore, we focus on covalently linked, nonconjugated linear arrangements and discuss the physical and chemical properties and differences of individual linkers, as well as their application in material and medicinal sciences.

Electrocatalytic Upgrading of Biomass-Derived Intermediate Compounds to Value-Added Products

The continuous advance in exploring renewable energy resources such as solar and wind will certainly alleviate our reliance on limited fossil reserves. However, the sustainable development of mankind demands not only energy but also carbon-based chemical goods. Unfortunately, exploitation of renewable energy resources like solar and wind will not lead to any carbon-based chemicals. The only sustainable and green carbon source is biomass, the scale of annual production of which has an immense potential to complement that of fossil-derived carbons. To utilize biomass in economically effective ways, many catalytic processes have been investigated. Among various strategies of biomass refinery, electrocatalytic upgrading stands out as an attractive option because of its benign operation conditions, high energy efficiency, and convenient control on production rate and selectivity using electrochemical parameters. This Minireview showcases several electrocatalytic systems for both reductive and oxidative upgrading of representative biomass-derived intermediate compounds, including 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, levulinic acid, glycerol, and sorbitol to different value-added products. The catalytic routes and mechanisms of each biomass-derived platform compound are discussed and compared. In order to be feasible for large-scale applications, low-cost composition and preparation of electrocatalysts are mandatory and will be emphasized. Finally, our personal perspective on the current challenges and future directions of electrocatalytic biomass upgrading is presented.

An Electromechanical Approach to Understanding Binding Configurations in Single-Molecule Devices

The configuration of the molecule-electrode contact region plays an important role in determining the conductance of a single-molecule junction, and the variety of possible contact configurations have yielded multiple conductance values for a number of molecular families. In this report, we perform simultaneous conductance and electromechanical coupling parameter measurements on a series of oligophenylene-dithiol single-molecule junctions. These molecules show two distinct conductance values, and by examining the conductance changes, the electromechanical coupling, and the changes in the I- V characteristics coupled with a combination of analytical mechanical models and density functional theory (DFT) structure calculations, we are able to determine the most-probable binding configuration in each of the conductance states. We find that the lower-conductance state is likely due to the thiols binding to each electrode at a gold top site, and in the higher-conductance state, the phenylene π orbitals interact with electrodes, drastically modifying the transport behavior. This approach provides an expanded methodology for exploring the relationship between the molecule-electrode contact configuration and molecular conductance.

Low Tunneling Decay of Iodine-Terminated Alkane Single-Molecule Junctions

One key issue for the development of molecular electronic devices is to understand the electron transport of single-molecule junctions. In this work, we explore the electron transport of iodine-terminated alkane single molecular junctions using the scanning tunneling microscope-based break junction approach. The result shows that the conductance decreases exponentially with the increase of molecular length with a decay constant β_N = 0.5 per -CH₂ (or 4 nm^-1). Importantly, the tunneling decay of those molecular junctions is much lower than that of alkane molecules with thiol, amine, and carboxylic acid as the anchoring groups and even comparable to that of the conjugated oligophenyl molecules. The low tunneling decay is attributed to the small barrier height between iodine-terminated alkane molecule and Au, which is well supported by DFT calculations. The work suggests that the tunneling decay can be effectively tuned by the anchoring group, which may guide the manufacturing of molecular wires.

Self-assembled monolayers in organic electronics

Self-assembly is possibly the most effective and versatile strategy for surface functionalization. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can be formed on (semi-)conductor and dielectric surfaces, and have been used in a variety of technological applications. This work aims to review the strategy behind the design and use of self-assembled monolayers in organic electronics, discuss the mechanism of interaction of SAMs in a microscopic device, and highlight the applications emerging from the integration of SAMs in an organic device. The possibility of performing surface chemistry tailoring with SAMs constitutes a versatile approach towards the tuning of the electronic and morphological properties of the interfaces relevant to the response of an organic electronic device. Functionalisation with SAMs is important not only for imparting stability to the device or enhancing its performance, as sought at the early stages of development of this field. SAM-functionalised organic devices give rise to completely new types of behavior that open unprecedented applications, such as ultra-sensitive label-free biosensors and SAM/organic transistors that can be used as robust experimental gauges for studying charge tunneling across SAMs.

Gateway state-mediated, long-range tunnelling in molecular wires

If the factors controlling the decay in single-molecule electrical conductance G with molecular length L could be understood and controlled, then this would be a significant step forward in the design of high-conductance molecular wires. For a wide variety of molecules conducting by phase coherent tunnelling, conductance G decays with length following the relationship G = Ae^-βL. It is widely accepted that the attenuation coefficient β is determined by the position of the Fermi energy of the electrodes relative to the energy of frontier orbitals of the molecular bridge, whereas the terminal anchor groups which bind to the molecule to the electrodes contribute to the pre-exponential factor A. We examine this premise for several series of molecules which contain a central conjugated moiety (phenyl, viologen or α-terthiophene) connected on either side to alkane chains of varying length, with each end terminated by thiol or thiomethyl anchor groups. In contrast with this expectation, we demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically that additional electronic states located on thiol anchor groups can significantly decrease the value of β, by giving rise to resonances close to E_F through coupling to the bridge moiety. This interplay between the gateway states and their coupling to a central conjugated moiety in the molecular bridges creates a new design strategy for realising higher-transmission molecular wires by taking advantage of the electrode-molecule interface properties.

Maskless Arbitrary Writing of Molecular Tunnel Junctions

Since fabricating geometrically well-defined, noninvasive, and compliant electrical contacts over molecular monolayers is difficult, creating molecular-scale electronic devices that function in high yield with good reproducibility is challenging. Moreover, none of the previously reported methods to form organic-electrode contacts at the nanometer and micrometer scales have resulted in directly addressable contacts in an untethered form under ambient conditions without the use of cumbersome equipment and nanolithography. Here we show that in situ encapsulation of a liquid metal (eutectic Ga-In alloy) microelectrode, which is used for junction formation, with a convenient photocurable polymeric scaffold enables untethering of the electrode and direct writing of arbitrary arrays of high-yielding molecular junctions under ambient conditions in a maskless fashion. The formed junctions function in quantitative yields and can afford tunneling currents with high reproducibility; they also function at low temperatures and under bent. The results reported here promise a massively parallel printing technology to construct integrated circuits based on molecular junctions with soft top contacts.

Multi-dimensional charge transport in supramolecular helical foldamer assemblies

Aromatic foldamers are bioinspired architectures whose potential use in materials remains largely unexplored. Here we report our investigation of vertical and horizontal charge transport over long distances in helical oligo-quinolinecarboxamide foldamers organized as single monolayers on Au or SiO2. Conductive atomic force microscopy showed that vertical conductivity is efficient and that it displays a low attenuation with foldamer length (0.06 Å-1). In contrast, horizontal charge transport is found to be negligible, demonstrating the strong anisotropy of foldamer monolayers. Kinetic Monte Carlo calculations were used to probe the mechanism of charge transport in these helical molecules and revealed the presence of intramolecular through-space charge transfer integrals approaching those found in pentacene and rubrene crystals, in line with experimental results. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of charge hopping along the foldamer chain evidence the strong contribution of multiple 1D and 3D pathways in these architectures and their dependence on conformational order. These findings show that helical foldamer architectures may provide a route for achieving charge transport over long distance by combining multiple charge transport pathways.

Mechanisms of Furfural Reduction on Metal Electrodes: Distinguishing Pathways for Selective Hydrogenation of Bioderived Oxygenates

Electrochemical reduction of biomass-derived platform molecules is an emerging route for the sustainable production of fuels and chemicals. However, understanding gaps between reaction conditions, underlying mechanisms, and product selectivity have limited the rational design of active, stable, and selective catalyst systems. In this work, the mechanisms of electrochemical reduction of furfural, an important biobased platform molecule and model for aldehyde reduction, are explored through a combination of voltammetry, preparative electrolysis, thiol-electrode modifications, and kinetic isotope studies. It is demonstrated that two distinct mechanisms are operable on metallic Cu electrodes in acidic electrolytes: (i) electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) and (ii) direct electroreduction. The contributions of each mechanism to the observed product distribution are clarified by evaluating the requirement for direct chemical interactions with the electrode surface and the role of adsorbed hydrogen. Further analysis reveals that hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis products are generated by parallel ECH pathways. Understanding the underlying mechanisms enables the manipulation of furfural reduction by rationally tuning the electrode potential, electrolyte pH, and furfural concentration to promote selective formation of important biobased polymer precursors and fuels.

Solid state and surface effects in thin-film molecular switches

Thin-films of three dihydroindolizine molecular switches were monitored via polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy to quantify solid state and surface-based inhibition of switching as a function of irradiation time. In the solid state, the molecular switches diverged dramatically with flexible alkyl substituents resulting in switching rates up to three times that of switches containing rigid analogs. For thin-films, decreasing film thickness from 30 nm to approximately 4 molecules thick resulted in an increase in inhibition. This was found to be consistent across all molecules regardless of structure. Increased inhibition is isolated as a metal/molecule interaction, and its consistency across structure is suggestive of energy transfer to the surface. These molecular switches highlight the interplay between molecular design, electronic structure, and switching efficiency.

First principle electron transport modeling of Be-doped organic molecular junctions

The transport properties of beryllium doped anthracene molecular junction are investigated using density functional non-equillibrium Green's function method. The equilibrium conductance of anthracene Metal-molecule-Metal (MmM) junction increases by approximately 77% by adding beryllium impurity to it. The electronic transport characteristics under both zero bias as well as finite bias are explored of such molecular junction. We observe novel attributes such as molecular rectification and NDR behavior for the molecular junction under consideration. It is found that the doping effect of Be- atom significantly changes the transport properties of aromatic molecular junction. Our findings shed light on the electron transport metrics that affect the conductance of MmM junctions within appreciable transmission limits. We firmly believe that the results deduced in this paper can be generalized for other aromatic molecular junctions as well.

Molecular Monolayers for Electrical Passivation and Functionalization of Silicon-Based Solar Energy Devices

Silicon-based solar fuel devices require passivation for optimal performance yet at the same time need functionalization with (photo)catalysts for efficient solar fuel production. Here, we use molecular monolayers to enable electrical passivation and simultaneous functionalization of silicon-based solar cells. Organic monolayers were coupled to silicon surfaces by hydrosilylation in order to avoid an insulating silicon oxide layer at the surface. Monolayers of 1-tetradecyne were shown to passivate silicon micropillar-based solar cells with radial junctions, by which the efficiency increased from 8.7% to 9.9% for n⁺/p junctions and from 7.8% to 8.8% for p⁺/n junctions. This electrical passivation of the surface, most likely by removal of dangling bonds, is reflected in a higher shunt resistance in the J-V measurements. Monolayers of 1,8-nonadiyne were still reactive for click chemistry with a model catalyst, thus enabling simultaneous passivation and future catalyst coupling.

Protocol for disentangling the thermally activated contribution to the tunneling-assisted charge transport. Analytical results and experimental relevance

In this paper we present results demonstrating that the charge transport by tunneling in molecular junctions can exhibit a substantial temperature dependence.

The effect of STM parameters on tip-enhanced Raman spectra

In this work, we evaluate the dependence of tip-enhanced Raman (TER) spectra of a monolayer of thiophenol at a Au(111) electrode on the scanning tunneling microscope’s tunneling current set-point and bias voltage parameters. We find an increase of the TER intensity upon set-point increase or bias decrease as expected from a gap-distance reduction. The relations obtained follow a theoretical model considering a simple gap-distance change when tuning the mentioned parameters. We find that the value of the bias voltage affects the TER intensity to a larger extent than the current set-point. Therefore it is advisable to work in a low-bias regime when aiming for ultrasensitive TER measurements.
