Influence of Confinement on the Solvation and Rotational Dynamics of Coumarin 153 in Ethanol

Synthesis, photophysical, quantum chemical investigation, linear and non-linear optical properties of coumarin derivative: Optoelectronic and optical limiting application

In order to develop a new photostable, light emitting and highly efficient synthesized material to exhibit display property and non-linear optical active materials with good band gap energy, we have synthesized molecule via simple catalytic method. The photophysical property of studied molecule in various organic solvents having different polarity exhibited considerably acceptable results. The results of quantum yield, lifetime and large Stoke shift shows the compound is a good promising candidate for the laser dyes and light emitting diode color filters. The energy band gap was determined by both experimentally and theoretically which is found to be an average of 3.2 eV which is well matched to the semiconducting materials band gap. The non-linear optical absorption properties of the synthesized molecule are dissolved in suitable solvents had been investigated using Z-scan technique. We have determined the sign and magnitude of nonlinear absorption coefficient by the method of open aperture Z-scan setup using an Nd: YAG continuous wave laser at 532 nm. The open aperture Z-scan profiles clearly demonstrate the presence of reverse saturable absorption kind nonlinearity in the investigated compound and are due to the two-photon absorption. Results of the non-linear optical studies confirm that the studied compound is more latent applications for optical limiting in continuous wave regime. Further, the optoelectronic properties were investigated the international commission on illumination, color rendering index, color purity, and correlated color temperature is results of the studied molecule in all studied solvents revels that this compound exhibits blue to cyan color and is suitable for organic light emitting diode which can be preferably used for daylight applications.

Dye Tool Box for a Fluorescence Enhancement Immunoassay

Immunochemical analytical methods are very successful in clinical diagnostics and are nowadays also emerging in the control of food as well as monitoring of environmental issues. Among the different immunoassays, luminescence based formats are characterized by their outstanding sensitivity making this format especially attractive for future applications. The need for multiparameter detection capabilities calls for a tool box of dye labels in order to transduce the biochemical reaction into an optically detectable signal. Here, in a multiparameter approach each analyte may be detected by a different dye with a unique emission color (covering the blue to red spectral range) or a unique luminescence decay kinetics. In the case of a competitive immunoassay format for each of the different dye labels an individual antibody would be needed. In the present paper a slightly modified approach is presented using a 7-aminocoumarin unit as the basic antigen against which highly specific antibodies were generated. Leaving the epitope region in the dyes unchanged but introducing a side group in positon 3 of the coumarin system allowed us to tune the optical properties of the coumarin dyes without the necessity of new antibody generation. Upon modification of the parent coumarin unit the full spectral range from blue to deep red was accessed. In the manuscript the photophysical characterization of the coumarin derivatives and their corresponding immunocomplexes with two highly specific antibodies is presented. The coumarin dyes and their immunocomplexes were characterized by steady-state and time-resolved absorption as well as emission spectroscopy. Moreover, fluorescence depolarization measurements were carried out to complement the data stressing the different binding modes of the two antibodies. The binding modes were evaluated using the photophysics of 7-aminocoumarins and how it was affected in the respective immunocomplexes, namely, the formation of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) as well as the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT). In contrast to other antibody-dye pairs reported a distinct fluorescence enhancement upon formation of the antibody-dye complex up to a factor of 50 was found. Because of the easy emission color tuning by tailoring the coumarin substitution for the antigen binding in nonrelevant position 3 of the parent molecule, a dye tool box is on hand which can be used in the construction of competitive multiparameter fluorescence enhancement immunoassays (FenIA).

Photochemistry and Photophysics in Silica-Based Materials: Ultrafast and Single Molecule Spectroscopy Observation

Silica-based materials (SBMs) are widely used in catalysis, photonics, and drug delivery. Their pores and cavities act as hosts of diverse guests ranging from classical dyes to drugs and quantum dots, allowing changes in the photochemical behavior of the confined guests. The heterogeneity of the guest populations as well as the confinement provided by these hosts affect the behavior of the formed hybrid materials. As a consequence, the observed reaction dynamics becomes significantly different and complex. Studying their photobehavior requires advanced laser-based spectroscopy and microscopy techniques as well as computational methods. Thanks to the development of ultrafast (spectroscopy and imaging) tools, we are witnessing an increasing interest of the scientific community to explore the intimate photobehavior of these composites. Here, we review the recent theoretical and ultrafast experimental studies of their photodynamics and discuss the results in comparison to those in homogeneous media. The discussion of the confined dynamics includes solvation and intra- and intermolecular proton-, electron-, and energy transfer events of the guest within the SBMs. Several examples of applications in photocatalysis, (photo)sensors, photonics, photovoltaics, and drug delivery demonstrate the vast potential of the SBMs in modern science and technology.

By confining two push–pull N-methylpyridinium derivatives within the rigid domains of surfactant hydrogels, the twisted nature of their intramolecular charge transfer state (formed in water upon excitation) was unravelled.

Solvation dynamics and proton transfer in nanoconfined liquids

Nanoconfined liquids are of interest because of both their fundamental properties and their potential utility in an array of applications. The structure and dynamics of the liquid can be dramatically impacted by the geometrical constraints and the interactions with the interface. Understanding the molecular-level origins of these changes and how they are determined by the characteristics of the confining framework is the subject of ongoing experimental and theoretical studies. The progress and remaining challenges in these efforts are reviewed in the context of solvation dynamics and proton transfer reactions, processes that are strongly affected by nanoscale confinement.

The use of coumarins as environmentally-sensitive fluorescent probes of heterogeneous inclusion systems

Coumarins, as a family of molecules, exhibit a wide range of fluorescence emission properties. In many cases, this fluorescence is extremely sensitive to the local environment of the molecule, especially the local polarity and microviscosity. In addition, coumarins show a wide range of size, shape, and hydrophobicity. These properties make them especially useful as fluorescent probes of heterogeneous environments, such as supramolecular host cavities, micelles, polymers and solids. This article will review the use of coumarins to probe such heterogeneous systems using fluorescence spectroscopy.

Local environments of coumarin dyes within mesostructured silica-surfactant nanocomposites

The local environments surrounding dye molecules were studied with use of coumarin dyes in a mesostructured silica-surfactant nanocomposite, which was formed in a porous alumina membrane by a surfactant-templated method and has an average pore diameter of 3.4 nm. Coumarin dyes, such as coumarin 480 (C480), coumarin 343 (C343), and propylamide coumarin 343 (PAC343), were extracted into the silica-surfactant nanocomposite and time-resolved fluorescence spectra of these dyes were examined. C480 and C343 show slow dynamic Stokes shifts and the decay curve can be fitted by a biexponential function. The decay-time constants obtained from the fitting are almost identical for C480 and C343: 0.87 and 7.5 ns for C480, and 0.86 and 7.6 ns for C343. In contrast to these two coumarin dyes, short decay-time constants (0.50 and 4.8 ns) were obtained for PAC343 in the silica-surfactant nanocomposite. These results indicate that the local environments of C480 and C343 are almost identical but different from that of PAC343. By considering the origin of the dynamic Stokes shift and the mesostructure of the silica-surfactant nanocomposite, the location and microenvironment of coumarin dyes within the silica-surfactant nanocomposite are discussed.

Diffusivities of Tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium inside Silica-Nanochannels Modified with Alkylsilanes

The apparent diffusion coefficients of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium ([Ru(bpy(3))](2+)) are estimated in silica-nanochannels which are assembled inside columnar alumina pores in an anodic alumina membrane, and are modified with alkylsilanes such as trimethylchlorosilane (C1), butyldimethylchlorosilane (C4), and dodecyldimethylchlorosilane (C12). The estimation is performed by observing the lag-time, which is defined as the time required for [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) to diffuse through alkylsilane-modified silica-nanochannels in the alumina membrane. When ethanol is used as a solvent, the apparent diffusion coefficients of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) are estimated as 2.1 x 10(-10) and 3.2 x 10(-10) cm(2) s(-1) in the C1- and C4-modified silica-nanochannels, respectively. These values are about 10(4) times smaller than that obtained in bulk ethanol. Based on the experimental results on the solvent dependency of the lag-time, the hydrogen-bonding interaction between ethanol molecules is considered to be stronger in the C1- and C4-modified silica-nanochannels than in bulk ethanol, and the hydrogen-bonding interaction plays a critical role for the slow diffusivity in those nanochannels. In contrast, the apparent diffusion coefficient in the C12-modified silica-nanochannel is at least two orders of magnitude larger than those in the C1- and C4-modified silica-nanochannels. This relatively fast diffusion is most likely explained by the presence of a long alkyl chain of C12, which reduces a hindrance effect that is originates in the hydrogen-bonding interaction.

Single Molecule Study of Perylene Orange Photobleaching in Thin Sol−Gel Films

The paper reports on photobleaching mechanisms of perylene orange embedded in thin sol-gel films, derived from single molecule studies. The experimental configuration uses wide-field illumination and one photon excitation of the molecules. Measurements have been performed both at ambient conditions and under vacuum in order to get information on the influence of oxygen on photobleaching in such porous samples. We have also recorded the evolution of photobleaching with respect to the excitation intensity. The results demonstrate that photobleaching from excited states higher than the first singlet and triplet states has a nonnegligible contribution as soon as the excitation energy exceeds a few hundred W/cm2 and that this process is favored in the presence of air. The study also demonstrates that perylene orange in sol-gel films is not a very efficient emitter but that photobleaching can be slow, which explains the interest for perylene orange as a good candidate to produce long lifetime solid-state lasers when embedded in monoliths of sol-gel.

Fluorescence Anisotropy Decay and Solvation Dynamics in a Nanocavity: Coumarin 153 in Methyl β-Cyclodextrins

Fluorescence anisotropy decay and solvation dynamics of coumarin 153 (C153) are studied in dimethyl beta-cyclodextrin (DIMEB) and trimethyl beta-cyclodextrin (TRIMEB) nanocavity in water. C153 binds to DIMEB and TRIMEB to form both 1:1 and 1:2 (C153:cyclodextrin) complexes. The anisotropy decays of C153 in DIMEB and TRIMEB are found to be biexponential. The fast component of anisotropy decay (approximately 1000 ps) is attributed to the 1:1 complex and the slower one (approximately 2500 ps) to the 1:2 complex. From the components of the anisotropy decay, the length of the 1:1 and 1:2 complexes are estimated. Solvation dynamics of C153 in DIMEB exhibits a very fast (2.4 ps) component (41%) and two slower components of 50 ps (29%) and 1450 ps (30%). Solvation dynamics in TRIMEB is described by three slow components of 10.3 ps (24%), 240 ps (45%), and 2450 ps (31%). Possible origins of the ultraslow components are discussed.

Temperature Dependence of Anisotropy Decay and Solvation Dynamics of Coumarin 153 in γ-Cyclodextrin Aggregates

Effect of temperature on the fluorescence anisotropy decay and the ultraslow component of solvation dynamics of coumarin 153 (C153) in a gamma-cyclodextrin (gamma-CD) nanocavity are studied using a picosecond set up. The steady-state anisotropy (0.13 +/- 0.01) and residual anisotropy (0.14 +/- 0.01) in fluorescence anisotropy decay in an aqueous solution containing 7 microM C153 and 40 mM gamma-CD are found to be quite large. This indicates formation of large linear nanotube aggregates of gamma-CD linked by C153. It is estimated that >53 gamma-CD units are present in each aggregate. In these aggregates with rise in temperature, the average solvation time (<tau(s)>(obs)) decreases markedly from 680 ps at 278 K to 160 ps at 318 K. The dynamic Stokes shift is found to decrease from 800 cm(-1) at 278 K to 250 cm(-1) at 318 K. The fraction of dynamic Stokes shift (f(d)) detected in a picosecond set up is calculated using the Fee-Maroncelli procedure. The corrected solvation time (<tau(s)>(corr) = f(d)<(tau(s)>(obs)) displays an Arrhenius type temperature dependence. From the temperature variation, the activation energy and entropy of the solvation process are determined to be 12.5 kcal M(-1) and 28 cal M(-1) K(-1), respectively. The ultraslow component and its temperature dependence are ascribed to a dynamic exchange between bound and free water molecules.

Solvation Dynamics of DCM in a DPPC Vesicle Entrapped in a Sodium Silicate Derived Sol−Gel Matrix

Solvation dynamics of 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6(p-dimethylaminostyryl) 4H-pyran (DCM) has been studied in a dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicle entrapped in a sodium silicate derived sol-gel glass. Solvation dynamics in DPPC in a sol-gel glass is described by two components of 350 +/- 50 ps (50%) and 2300 +/- 200 ps (50%) with a total dynamic Stokes shift of 1300 cm(-1). The fast component (350 ps) is similar to the fast component in a DPPC vesicle in bulk water (320 +/- 50 ps). This component may be ascribed to the dynamics of the water molecules inside the water pool of the vesicle. However, the slow component (2300 +/- 200 ps) is about 2.5 times slower compared to the slow component of solvation dynamics of DCM in a DPPC vesicle in bulk solvent (900 +/- 100 ps). The anisotropy decay of DCM in a DPPC vesicle both in sol-gel glass and in bulk water exhibits a very fast initial decay with a large residual anisotropy, which does not decay in approximately 10 ns. The time scale of anisotropy decay is very different from that of solvation dynamics.

Incorporation and manipulation of coronene in an organic template structure

A two-dimensional molecular template structure of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (trimesic acid, TMA) was formed on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface (HOPG) by self-assembly at the liquid-solid interface. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) investigations show high-resolution images of the porous structure on the surface. After the host structure was created, coronene molecules were inserted as guest molecules into the pores. STM results indicate that some of the guest molecules rotate inside their molecular bearing. Further investigations show that single coronene molecules can be directly kicked out of their pores by means of STM.

Simulations of time-dependent fluorescence in nano-confined solvents

The time-dependent fluorescence of a model diatomic molecule with a charge-transfer electronic transition in confined solvents has been simulated. The effect of confining the solvent is examined by comparing results for solutions contained within hydrophobic spherical cavities of varying size (radii of 10-20 angstroms). In previous work [J. Chem. Phys. 118, 6618 (2002)] it was found that the solute position in the cavity critically affects the absorption and fluorescence spectra and their dependence on cavity size. Here we examine the effect of cavity size on the time-dependent fluorescence, a common experimental probe of solvent dynamics. The present results confirm a prediction that motion of the solute in the cavity after excitation can be important in the time-dependent fluorescence. The effects of solvent density are also considered. The results are discussed in the context of interpreting time-dependent fluorescence measurements of confined solvent systems.
