Cyclohexane and Benzene Confined in MCM-41 and SBA-15: Confinement Effects on Freezing and Melting

Structures and Dynamics of Complex Guest Molecules in Confinement, Revealed by Solid-State NMR, Molecular Dynamics, and Calorimetry

This review gives an overview of current trends in the investigation of confined molecules such as water, small and higher alcohols, carbonic acids, ethylene glycol, and non-ionic surfactants, such as polyethylene glycol or Triton-X, as guest molecules in neat and functionalized mesoporous silica materials employing solid-state NMR spectroscopy, supported by calorimetry and molecular dynamics simulations. The combination of steric interactions, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions results in a fascinating phase behavior in the confinement. Combining solid-state NMR and relaxometry, DNP hyperpolarization, molecular dynamics simulations, and general physicochemical techniques, it is possible to monitor these confined molecules and gain deep insights into this phase behavior and the underlying molecular arrangements. In many cases, the competition between hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between polar and non-polar moieties of the guests and the host leads to the formation of ordered structures, despite the cramped surroundings inside the pores.

The Impact of Hydration and Dehydration on the Mobility and Location of Ibuprofen Molecules in the Voids of Ultra-Stable Zeolite Y

Mesoporous dealuminated zeolites are used as hosts for ibuprofen. This drug experiences high mobility when confined in mesopores, which is largely dependent on the water content. Zeolites are materials that are naturally hydrated under ambient conditions. Nitrogen adsorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD) show that the samples with the content of ibuprofen up to 38% have the guest phase residing only in mesopores. ¹H and ¹³C MAS NMR studies of samples in ambient conditions, after dehydration, and in hydration prove the impact of water for increased mobility of ibuprofen. Increased mobility of the introduced phase was also detected for samples with no water content. It was ascribed to ibuprofen located outside mesopores, which experiences a prolonged time of cooling to room temperature. This phenomenon is important for all the future uses of the melting method in guest-host systems and the future use of zeolites for biomedical applications.

Solid-state NMR studies of non-ionic surfactants confined in mesoporous silica

This review gives an overview of current trends in the investigation of confined molecules such as higher alcohols, ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol as guest molecules in neat and functionalized mesoporous silica materials. All these molecules have both hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts. They are characteristic role-models for the investigation of confined surfactants. Their properties are studied by a combination of solid-state NMR and relaxometry with other physicochemical techniques and molecular dynamics techniques. It is shown that this combination delivers unique insights into the structure, arrangement, dynamical properties and the guest-host interactions inside the confinement.

Thermal properties and cold crystallization kinetics of deep eutectic solvents confined in nanopores

Herein, the phase behaviors of both bulk and confined deep eutectic solvents in controlled pore glasses were first investigated. Glass transition, cold crystallization and melting behaviors alter significantly in the nanopores due to the size effect and interfacial interactions. Kinetic analysis of the crystallization reveals increased effective activation energies and pre-exponential factors under nanoconfinement.

Manipulating the physical states of confined ibuprofen in SBA-15 based drug delivery systems obtained by solid-state loading: Impact of the loading degree

Using the Milling-Assisted Loading (MAL) solid-state method for loading a poorly water-soluble drug (ibuprofen, IBP) within the SBA-15 matrix has given the opportunity to manipulate the physical state of drugs for optimizing bioavailability. The MAL method makes it easy to control and analyze the influence of the degree of loading on the physical state of IBP inside the SBA-15 matrix with an average pore diameter of 9.4 nm. It was found that the density of IBP molecules in an average pore size has a direct influence on both the glass transition and the mechanism of crystallization. Detailed analyzes of the crystallite distribution and melting by Raman mapping, x-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry have shown that the crystals are localized in the core of the channel and surrounded by a liquid monolayer. The results of these complementary investigations have been used for determining the relevant parameters (related to the SBA-15 matrix and to the IBP molecule) and the nature of the physical state of the confined matter.

Direct Synthesis of Mesoporous Organosilica and Proof-of-Concept Applications in Lysozyme Adsorption and Supported Catalysis

Mesoporous materials represent a useful alternative for exploiting the effects of confinement on molecular trapping and catalysis. Their efficiency often depends on the interactions between the surface and the targeted molecules. One way to enhance these interactions is to adjust the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance of the surface. In the case of mesoporous silica, the incorporation of organic groups is an efficient solution to adapt the material for specific applications. In this work, we have used the co-condensation method to control the hydrophobicity of mesoporous organosilica. The obtained materials are methyl- or phenyl-containing silica with a pore size between 3 and 5 nm. The surface chemistry control has shown the enhanced performance of the materials in two proof-of-concept (PoC) applications: lysozyme adsorption and supported catalysis. The lysozyme adsorption is observed to be over 3 times more efficient with the phenyl-functionalized material than MCM-41, due to π-π interactions. For the catalysis, copper(II) was immobilized on the organosilica surface. In this case, the presence of methyl groups significantly enhanced the product yield for the catalyzed synthesis of a triazole derivative; this was attributed to the enhanced hydrophobic surface-reactant interactions. It was also found that the materials have a higher water adsorption capacity and an improved resistance to hydrolysis. The modulation of water properties in confinement with hydrophobic surfaces, consistently with the water as tuneable solvent (WaTuSo) concept, is a crucial aspect in the efficiency of mesoporous materials for dedicated applications.

Small Molecules, Non-Covalent Interactions, and Confinement

This review gives an overview of current trends in the investigation of small guest molecules, confined in neat and functionalized mesoporous silica materials by a combination of solid-state NMR and relaxometry with other physico-chemical techniques. The reported guest molecules are water, small alcohols, and carbonic acids, small aromatic and heteroaromatic molecules, ionic liquids, and surfactants. They are taken as characteristic role-models, which are representatives for the typical classes of organic molecules. It is shown that this combination delivers unique insights into the structure, arrangement, dynamics, guest-host interactions, and the binding sites in these confined systems, and is probably the most powerful analytical technique to probe these systems.

Functionalized mesoporous SBA-15 silica: recent trends and catalytic applications

The development of advanced materials for heterogeneous catalytic applications requires fine control over the synthesis and structural parameters of the active site. Mesoporous silica materials have attracted increasing attention to be considered as an important class of nanostructured support materials in heterogeneous catalysis. Their large surface area, well-defined porous architecture and ability to incorporate metal atoms within the mesopores lead them to be a promising support material for designing a variety of different catalysts. In particular, SBA-15 mesoporous silica has its broad applicability in catalysis because of its comparatively thicker walls leading to higher thermal and mechanical stability. In this review article, various strategies to functionalize SBA-15 mesoporous silica have been reviewed with a view to evaluating its efficacy in different catalytic transformation reactions. Special attention has been given to the molecular engineering of the silica surface, within the framework and within the hexagonal mesoporous channels for anchoring metal oxides, single-site species and metal nanoparticles (NPs) serving as catalytically active sites.

Properties of Hydrogen-Bonded Liquids at Interfaces

Effects of interfaces on hydrogen-bonded liquids play major roles in nature and technology. Despite their importance, a fundamental understanding of these effects is still lacking. In large parts, this shortcoming is due to the high complexity of these systems, leading to an interference of various interactions and effects. Therefore, it is advisable to take gradual approaches, which start from well designed and defined model systems and systematically increase the level of intricacy towards more complex mimetics. Moreover, it is necessary to combine insights from a multitude of methods, in particular, to link novel preparation strategies and comprehensive experimental characterization with inventive computational and theoretical modeling. Such concerted approach was taken by a group of preparative, experimentally, and theoretically working scientists in the framework of Research Unit FOR 1583 funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation). This special issue summarizes the outcome of this collaborative research. In this introductory article, we give an overview of the covered topics and the main results of the whole consortium. The following contributions are review articles or original works of individual research projects.

Chemically Modified Silica Materials as Model Systems for the Characterization of Water-Surface Interactions

A series of novel functionalized mesoporous silica-based materials with well-defined pore diameters, surface functionalization and surface morphology is synthesized by co-condensation or grafting techniques and characterized by solid-state NMR spectroscopy, DNP enhanced solid state-NMR and thermodynamic techniques. These materials are employed as host-systems for small-guest molecules like water, small alcohols, carbonic acids, small aromatic molecules, binary mixtures and others. The phase-behavior of these confined guests is studied by combinations of one dimensional solid-state NMR techniques (1H MAS, 2H-line shape analysis, 13C CPMAS) and two-dimensional correlation experiments like 1H-29Si- solid-state HETCOR.

Heavy oil oxidation in the nano-porous medium of synthetic opal

Increasing interest to study hydrocarbon behavior in fine porous media, awakened by the shale revolution, requires the application of suitable model porous media. In the current study we prepared nano-porous synthetic opal, profoundly investigated its morphological and textural properties, and studied the kinetics of combustion of heavy oil impregnated into nanopores. Comparison of kinetic parameters of the oil oxidation process for nano-porous and coarse-porous media revealed that nanoconfinement affects the reactivity of oil.

In the current study we synthesized nano-porous opal, investigated its morphological and textural properties, and showed that nanoconfinement affects reactivity of oil.

Polymorphism of a hexadecane–heptadecane binary system in nanopores

Phase behaviors of a hexadecane–heptadecane (n-C₁₆H₃₄–C₁₇H₃₆, C₁₆–C₁₇) binary system in the bulk and in nanopores of controlled porous glasses (CPGs) are investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Confinement-Induced Supercriticality and Phase Equilibria of Hydrocarbons in Nanopores

For over a century, the phase behavior of bulk fluids has been described as PVT (pressure-volume-temperature) three-dimensional properties, but it has become increasingly clear that the liquid-vapor phase behavior in confined geometries is significantly altered from the bulk. Efforts have been devoted to accessing confined phase transitions using sorption, molecular simulations, and theoretical methods. However, a comprehensive picture of PVT relationships for confined hydrocarbons remains uncertain. Herein, we introduce d (confining pore diameter) as a fourth dimension, and we present PVT-d behavior of confined fluids in nanopores. For the first time, a T-d phase diagram is presented for n-hexane, n-octane, and n-decane under multiple confinement scales (37.9, 14.8, 9.8, 6.0, 4.1, 3.3, and 2.2 nm cylindrical pore diameter) using experimental differential scanning calorimetry and PVT-d equation of state theory at atmospheric pressure. As pore diameter decreases from 37.9 to 4.1 nm, the bubble point increases by as much as 15 K above bulk, until we observe behavior consistent with a supercritical state, pointing to confinement-induced supercriticality. Remarkably, experimental and theoretical findings overlap very well, showing that this approach effectively captures the phase boundaries between the liquid, vapor, and supercritical fluid regions. The model and completed EOS are additionally extended to calculation of isothermal capillary adsorption, and its validity is discussed.

The peculiar behavior of the molecular dynamics of a glass-forming liquid confined in native porous materials - the role of negative pressure

In this paper, we combine Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) at ambient and high pressure, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) data of 2-ethylhexanol in the bulk state and when infiltrated in native silica nanopores to elucidate the relative role of surface effects on the Debye and structural relaxation processes under 2D spatial constraints. We show that the two processes have different sensitivities to (i) the changes in density as quantified by the EV/Hp ratio and (ii) the degree of confinement. Significant enhancement of the dynamics of the confined molecules at low temperatures is related to the vitrification of the interfacial molecules (Tg,int) affecting the packing density of the core molecules. This is corroborated by the PALS measurements, which demonstrated that the effective volume for the confined samples is slightly higher and seems to be temperature invariant below Tg,int. Consequently, negative pressure systematically develops with lowering temperature reaching values of -100 and -110 MPa (depending on the pore size) at the glass transition temperature. This result offers a better understanding of the counterbalance between surface and finite size effects as well as the role of negative pressure in controlling the dynamics and the glass transition of liquids under 2D spatial restrictions.

Structure and Dynamics of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane Confined between Mica Surfaces

Using a molecular model for octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS), molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to probe the phase state of OMCTS confined between two mica surfaces in equilibrium with a reservoir. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out for elevations ranging from 5 to 35 K above the melting point for the OMCTS model used in this study. The Helmholtz free energy is computed for a specific confinement using the two-phase thermodynamic (2PT) method. Analysis of the in-plane pair correlation functions did not reveal signatures of freezing even under an extreme confinement of two layers. OMCTS is found to orient with a wide distribution of orientations with respect to the mica surface, with a distinct preference for the surface parallel configuration in the contact layers. The self-intermediate scattering function is found to decay with increasing relaxation times as the surface separation is decreased, and the two-step relaxation in the scattering function, a signature of glassy dynamics, distinctly evolves as the temperature is lowered. However, even at 5 K above the melting point, we did not observe a freezing transition and the self-intermediate scattering functions relax within 200 ps for the seven-layered confined system. The self-diffusivity and relaxation times obtained from the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts stretched exponential fits to the late α-relaxation exhibit power law scalings with the packing fraction as predicted by mode coupling theory. A distinct discontinuity in the Helmholtz free energy, potential energy, and a sharp change in the local bond order parameter, Q4, was observed at 230 K for a five-layered system upon cooling, indicative of a first-order transition. A freezing point depression of about 30 K was observed for this five-layered confined system, and at the lower temperatures, contact layers were found to be disordered with long-range order present only in the inner layers. These dynamical signatures indicate that confined OMCTS undergoes a slowdown akin to a fluid approaching a glass transition upon increasing confinement, and freezing under confinement would require substantial subcooling below the bulk melting point of OMCTS.

Diverting the phase transition behaviour of adipic acid via mesoporous silica confinement

Phase transition regulation was achieved by imbibing adipic acid into mesoporous silica chambers, on the basis of pore size-dependent thermal behaviour.

Low-temperature heat capacities of confined liquid benzene, implying the behavior of ordinary bulk liquids

Isobaric heat capacities C p of benzene confined in silica MCM-41 mesopores with average diameters equal to and smaller than 2.9 nm were measured by precise adiabatic calorimetry. The confined benzene samples revealed no thermal anomaly due to crystallization/fusion and vitrified at low temperatures. The C p curves displayed a hump and a considerably quick decrease on the low-temperature side of the hump as the pore diameter increased. The enthalpy-relaxation effects observed on intermittent heating showed that the anomaly of the C p hump and quick decrease is not assigned to a glass transition. The bend in the temperature dependence of density reported previously was interpreted as corresponding to the quick decrease in C p . We concluded that the anomalous C p and density behaviors originated from the ordering/excitation in the configurational state, close to the ground state, of confined molecular aggregate and proposed a scenario that explains the general C p curves of ordinary bulk supercooled liquids in equilibrium at low temperatures below the glass-transition temperatures.

The behavior of cyclohexane confined in slit carbon nanopore

It is well known that confining a liquid into a pore strongly alters the liquid behavior. Investigations of the effect of confinement are of great importance for many scientific and technological applications. Here we present a molecular dynamics study of the behavior of cyclohexane confined in carbon slit pores. The local structure and orientational ordering of cyclohexane molecules are investigated. It is shown that the system freezes with decreasing the pore width, and the freezing temperature of nanoconfined cyclohexane is higher than the bulk one.

Revisiting the glass transition and dynamics of supercooled benzene by calorimetric studies

The glass transition and dynamics of benzene are studied in binary mixtures of benzene with five glass forming liquids, which can be divided into three groups: (a) o-terphenyl and m-xylene, (b) N-butyl methacrylate, and (c) N,N-dimethylpropionamide and N,N-diethylformamide to represent the weak, moderate, and strong interactions with benzene. The enthalpies of mixing, ΔH(mix), for the benzene mixtures are measured to show positive or negative signs, with which the validity of the extrapolations of the glass transition temperature T(g) to the benzene-rich regions is examined. The extrapolations for the T(g) data in the mixtures are found to converge around the point of 142 K, producing T(g) of pure benzene. The fragility m of benzene is also evaluated by extrapolating the results of the mixtures, and a fragility m ∼ 80 is yielded. The obtained T(g) and m values for benzene allow for the construction of the activation plot in the deeply supercooled region. The poor glass formability of benzene is found to result from the high melting point, which in turn leads to low viscosity in the supercooled liquid.

Understanding and Analyzing Freezing-Point Transitions of Confined Fluids within Nanopores

Understanding phase transitions of fluids confined within nanopores is important for a wide variety of technological applications. It is well known that fluids confined in nanopores typically demonstrate freezing-point depressions, ΔTf, described by the Gibbs-Thomson (GT) equation. Herein, we highlight and correct several thermodynamic inconsistencies in the conventional use of the GT equation, including the fact that the enthalpy of melting, ΔHm, and the solid-liquid surface energy, γ(SL), are functions of pore diameter, complicating their prediction. We propose a theoretical analysis that employs the Turnbull coefficient, originally derived from metal nucleation theory, and show its consistency as a more reliable quantity for the prediction of ΔTf. This analysis provides a straightforward method to estimate ΔTf of nanoconfined organic fluids. As an example, we apply this technique to ibuprofen, an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), and show that this theory fits well to the experimental ΔTf of nanoconfined ibuprofen.

Facile preparation of hierarchically porous diatomite/MFI-type zeolite composites and their performance of benzene adsorption: the effects of NaOH etching pretreatment

Hierarchically porous diatomite/MFI-type zeolite (Dt/Z) composites with excellent benzene adsorption performance were prepared. The hierarchical porosity was generated from the microporous zeolite coated at the surface of diatom frustules and from the macroporous diatomite support. A facile NaOH etching method was employed for the first time to treat the frustule support, followed by hydrothermal growth of MFI-type zeolite at the surface of frustules previously seeded with nanocrystalline silicalite-1 (Sil-1). NaOH etching enlarged the pores on diatom frustules and further increased the coated zeolite contents (W(z)). The central macropore size of the diatom frustules increased from approximately 200-500 nm to 400-1000 nm after NaOH etching. The W(z) could reach 61.2%, while the macroporosity of the composites was largely preserved due to more voids for zeolite coating being formed by NaOH etching. The Dt/Z composites exhibited higher benzene adsorption capacity per unit mass of zeolite and less mass transfer resistance than Sil-1, evaluated via a method of breakthrough curves. These results demonstrate that etching of a diatomite support is a facile but crucial process for the preparation of Dt/Z composites, enabling the resulting composites to become promising candidates for uses in volatile organic compounds emission control.

Crystallization and fusion behaviors, observed by adiabatic calorimetry, of benzene confined in silica mesopores with uniform diameters

Heat capacities and spontaneous enthalpy-relaxation effects of the benzene confined in silica MCM-41 and SBA-15 pores with uniform diameters were measured by high-precision adiabatic calorimetry. The fusion temperatures and fusion enthalpies determined were compared with the literature results of benzene confined within pores of CPG glasses. It was confirmed, from the observed spontaneous heat-release or -absorption effects, that there exists a non-crystallizing amorphous component of confined benzene, as reported previously. The pore-diameter dependence of fusion enthalpy observed was inconsistent with the previously proposed model which suggested that the non-crystallizing amorphous component is located on the pore wall in the form of a shell-like structure of a few nm in thickness. A very slow relaxation process corresponding to a translational-diffusion motion of molecule was observed, indicating that the benzene fills the pores incompletely along the pore channel. In addition, we found that the fusion enthalpy as a function of inverse pore-diameter dependence decreases steeply in the range of 60-10 nm in diameter while gradually in the range around 5 nm.

Incorporation of organic crystals into the interspace of oriented nanocrystals: morphologies and properties

Oriented nanocrystals, as seen in biominerals, have both the macroscopic hierarchical morphologies and the nanoscale interspace among the unit crystals. Here we studied the incorporation effects of the specific interspace in the oriented nanocrystals on the morphologies, properties, and applications of organic crystals. Organic crystals, such as 9-vinylcarbazole (VCz), azobenzene (AB), and pyrene (PY), were introduced into the specific interspace of oriented nanocrystals from the melts. The morphologies and properties of the incorporated organic crystals were systematically studied in these model cases. The incorporation of the organic crystals provided the composites with the original oriented nanocrystals. The incorporated organic crystals formed the single-crystalline structures even in the nanoscale interspace. The melts of the organic compounds were crystallized and grown in the interspace of the original materials. The incorporated organic crystals showed the specific phase transition behavior. The freezing points of the organic crystals were raised by the incorporation into the nanospace while the melting points were not changed. The hierarchical morphologies of the organic crystals were obtained after the dissolution of the original materials. The hierarchical morphologies of the original materials were replicated to the organic crystals. The incorporated organic crystal was polymerized without deformation of the hierarchical morphologies. The hierarchical polymer can be applied to the donor material for the generation of a larger amount of the charge-transfer complex with the acceptor molecule than the commercial polymer microparticles. The present work shows the potential use of the nanoscale interspace generated in the oriented nanocrystals.

Phase Behavior of Undecane-Dodecane Mixtures Confined in SBA-15

Phase behavior of undecane-dodecane mixtures (n-C11H24-C12H26, C11-C12) in bulk and confined in SBA-15 (pore diameters 3.8, 7.8, and 17.2 nm) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Phase diagram of the confined C11-C12system shows dependence on pore size, indicating simple behavior compared with the bulk. In the three systems, melting points of the confined C11, C12and the mixtures (xC12= 0.1–0.9) present a linear relation with the pore diameter from 3.8 to 17.2 nm. Melting behavior of the confined C11-C12mixtures is closely as the confined C11, C12. Melting temperatures of the three systems have been fitted as a function of mole fractionxC12.
