Abstract
Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF), being a separation technique, was used to remove cobalt metal ion (Co2+) from their aqueous solutions in an application to reduce the toxicity level from industrial effluents using a micellar solution of anionic and cationic surfactants. The metal ions were first adsorbed by using anionic surfactants, i.e., sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium oleate (SO). The calculations for partition (Kx) and binding constants (Kb) and their respective free energy of partition and binding (ΔGp and ΔGb kJmol-1) helped significantly to find out the extent of binding or interaction of Co2+ with the surfactant and ΔGp and ΔGb were found to be -29.50 and -19.38 kJmol-1 for SDS and -23.95 and -12.67 kJmol-1 in the case of SO. MEUF work was also performed to find out the optimal conditions to remove metal pollutants from the aqueous system. For the said purpose, various factors and concentrations effect were studied, such as the concentration of the surfactant, concentration of the electrolyte (NaCl), transmembrane pressure, RPM, and pH. The efficiency of this process was checked by calculating various parameters, such as rejection percentage (R%) and permeate flux (J). A maximum rejection of 99.95% with SDS and 99.99% with SO was attained.

Abstract
Since biocatalysts manoeuvre most of the physiological activities in living organisms and exhibit extreme selectivity and specificity, their use to trigger physicochemical change in polymeric architectures has been successfully used for targeted drug delivery. Our major interest is to develop lipase responsive nanoscale delivery systems from bio-compatible and biodegradable building blocks. Herein, we report the synthesis of four novel non-ionic Gemini amphiphiles using a chemo-enzymatic approach. A symmetrical diglycerol has been used as a core that is functionalised with alkyl chains for the creation of a hydrophobic cavity, and for aqueous solubility (polyethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (mPEG) is incorporated. Such systems can exhibit a varied self-assembly behaviour leading to the observance of different morphological structures. The aggregation behaviour of the synthesised nanocarrier was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and critical aggregation concentration (CAC) measurements. The nanotransport potential of amphiphiles was investigated for hydrophobic guest molecules, i.e. Nile red, nimodipine and curcumin. Cytotoxicity of the amphiphiles was studied using HeLa and MCF7 cell lines at different concentrations, i.e. 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 mg mL−1. All nanocarriers were found to be non-cytotoxic up to a concentration of 0.1 mg mL−1. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (cLSM) study suggested the uptake of encapsulated dye in the cytosol of the cancer cells within 4 h, thus implying that amphiphilic systems can efficiently transport hydrophobic drug molecules into cells. The biomedical application of the synthesised Gemini amphiphiles was also investigated for dermal drug delivery. In addition, the enzyme-mediated release study was performed that demonstrated 90% of the dye is released within three days. All these results supported the capability of nanocarriers in drug delivery systems. Lipase responsive diglycerol based Gemini amphiphiles have been synthesized via a chemo-enzymatic approach and their application in dermal drug delivery has been explored.![]()

Abstract
A new series of nonionic gemini amphiphiles have been synthesized in a multi-step chemoenzymatic approach by using a novel A2 B2 -type central core consisting of conjugating glycerol and propargyl bromide on 5-hydroxy isophthalic acid. A pair of hydrophilic monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) and hydrophobic linear alkyl chains (C12 /C15 ) were then added to the core to obtain amphiphilic architectures. The aggregation tendency in aqueous media was studied by dynamic light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The nanotransport potential of the amphiphiles was studied for model hydrophobic guests, that is, the dye Nile Red and the drug Nimodipine by using UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Evaluation of the viability of amphiphile-treated A549 cells showed them to be well tolerated up to the concentrations studied. Being ester based, these amphiphiles exhibit stimuli-responsive sensitivity towards esterases, and a rupture of amphiphilic architecture was observed in the presence of immobilized Candida antarctica lipase (Novozym 435), thus facilitating release of the encapsulated guest from the aggregate.

Abstract
Self-assembly of non-ionic amphiphilic architectures into nanostructures with defined size, shape and morphology has garnered substantial momentum in the recent years due to their extensive applications in biomedicine. The manifestation of a wide range of morphologies such as micelles, vesicles, fibers, tubes, and toroids is thought to be related to the structure of amphiphilic architectures, in particular, the choice of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts. In this review, we look at different types of non-ionic small amphiphilic architectures and the factors that influence their self-assembly into various nanostructures in aqueous medium. In particular, we focus on the explored structural parameters that guide the formation of various nanostructures, and the ways these structures can be used in applications ranging from drug delivery to cell imaging.

Abstract
A novel nanocomposite of cellulose based on multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was synthesized by a simple solution mixing–evaporation method. The morphology, thermal investigations, electrocatalytic oxidation of amitriptyline were analyzed at multi-walled carbon/cellulose nanocomposite in detail. The amitriptyline (AMT) drug was electrochemically studied in a phosphate buffer at different pH using the MWCNT/cellulose modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). As per the linear relationship among AMT along with peak current, differential pulse voltammetry technique has been established for their quantitative pharmaceutical’s determination. The oxidation potential shifted negatively compared to GCE, showing that the MWCNT/cellulose modified electrode had an excellent catalytic activity for the AMT oxidation. The anodic peak current varied linear response with AMT’s concentration in the range of 0.5 to 20.0 μM with a LOD of 0.0845 μM and LOQ of 0.282 μM, respectively. The proposed method was effectively put on the determination of AMT in pharmaceutical and urine samples. This novel methodology is presented here as an example of a complete development methodology for the determination of amitriptyline drug and sensor for use in healthcare fields.

Abstract
Abstract
A gemini surfactant with asymmetric molecular structure, monododecyl diphenyl methane disulfonate surfactant (MDDMDS), was synthesized by Friedel-Crafts reaction of dodecanol with diphenyl methane in the presence of active bleach clay, followed by sulfonation with liquid sulfur trioxide. The surface activity, salinity and hardness tolerance, wettability alteration and spontaneous emulsification of this asymmetric gemini surfactant were investigated. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was 9.1 × 10−5 mol · L−1, the surface tension (γcmc) was 38.4 mN · m−1. Sodium chloride tolerance and calcium chloride tolerance reached 20.55 wt.% and 17.01 wt.%, respectively. This surfactant altered the wettability of the PTFE-film surface from oil-wet to less oil-wet or intermediate wet and show preferable property of emulsifying the crude oil.

Abstract
Sodium salts of maleamic acid derivatives from lauryl esters of L-tyrosine (MTNa) and L-phenylalanine (MPNa) were synthesized and characterized. The aggregated structures of MTNa and MPNa in water were investigated, employing several independent methods. MPNa showed secondary aggregated structures in contrast to MTNa at concentrations of >1 × 10(-3) M. The results from dynamic light scattering, transmittance, conductivity, and viscosity measurements suggested the formation of aggregated structures of different types in MTNa and MPNa solutions. The measured fluorescence anisotropy (r) at 0.180 of the fluoroprobe, 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH), and the d spacing of 38 Å from small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD) experiments confirmed the bilayer structures in MPNa. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images provided the morphological features. The emulsion produced using MPNa solution was more stable. The confocal fluorescence microscopy image of the emulsion from MPNa confirmed the entrapment of water-soluble dye, rhodamine. The models of MTNa and MPNa molecules and the aggregated structures are presented.

Abstract
Solution properties of pluronics L44 or L [(PEO)(10)(PPO)(23)(PEO)(10)] and 10R5 or R [(PPO)(8)(PEO)(22)(PPO)(8)] were studied individually as well in their binary mixtures in aqueous medium. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), critical micelle temperature, and cloud point (CP) were determined. Ideal and nonideal behaviors of their mixtures in the formation of CMC and CP were observed; the energetics of the studied processes were determined. Spectrophotometry, isothermal titration calorimetry and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods were used for evaluations. Morphologies of the dispersed L, R, and their mixtures along with their polydispersities were determined from DLS measurements. Atomic force microscopy was also employed. The interfacial properties of L and R were investigated forming Langmuir monolayers in a surface balance. The surface pressures (π) generated by the compounds were moderate, the area per molecule was higher for R than L. R has shown antibacterial activity against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria whereas L was inactive in this respect.

Abstract
A series of deoxycholic and cholic acid-derived oligomers were synthesized and their ability to extract hydrophilic dye molecules of different structure, size, and functional groups into nonpolar media was studied. The structure of the dye and "dendritic effect" in the extraction process was examined using absorption spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The efficiency of structurally preorganized oligomers in the aggregation process was evaluated by 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid (ANS) fluorescence studies. The possible formation of globular structures for higher-generation molecules was investigated by molecular modeling studies and the results were correlated with the anomaly observed in the extraction process with this molecule. The ability of these molecules for selective extraction of specific dyes from blended colors is also reported.

Abstract
In this work, we have prepared Ag-nanorods using biscationic gemini surfactant micelles as the media by a seed-mediated wet synthesis method. Towards this end, we first synthesized Ag-nanoseeds of diameter ~7 nm stabilized by trisodium citrate (as the capping agent). Then these Ag-nanoseeds were used to synthesize Ag-nanorods of different aspect ratios. With decreasing Ag-nanoseed concentration, the aspect ratios of the Ag-nanorods stabilized by these gemini surfactants increased gradually. Various Ag-nanoseeds and Ag-nanospecies were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy (to know the surface plasmon bands), transmission electron microscopy (to find out their particle sizes and distribution), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. When we used micelles derived from gemini surfactants of shorter spacer -(CH(2))(n)- (n = 2 or 4) to stabilize the Ag-nanorods, the λ(max) of the longitudinal band shifted more towards the blue region compared to that of the gemini surfactant micelles with a longer spacer -(CH(2))(n)- (n = 5, 12) at a given amount of the Ag-nanoseed solution. So, the growth of Ag-nanorods in the gemini micellar solutions depends on the spacer-chain length of gemini surfactants employed.

Abstract
The aggregation properties of Tyr-Phe dipeptide and Val-Tyr-Val tripeptide were studied in aqueous solution and in the presence of SDS and SDS-polymer environments using UV-visible, surface tension, fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) techniques. Both the peptides formed micelles. The cmc values obtained for dipeptide and tripeptide are 2×10(-5) and 4×10(-5) M, respectively in aqueous solution at 25°C. The presence of additives (SDS and polymer) hindered the micelle formation of peptides. The cmc values obtained by various methods are in good agreement with each other. Effect of peptides on the aggregation properties of SDS also was investigated. The cmc of SDS was decreased in presence of peptides and were reduced with increase in temperature. Using monophasic micellization concept, the association constant (K(A)) for the SDS-peptide mixed micellar systems was determined. Using biphasic model, the thermodynamic parameters viz; ΔG°(m), ΔH°(m) and ΔS°(m) for SDS-water and SDS-peptide-water mixed micellar systems, the standard free energy for transfer of SDS from aqueous to peptide additive environments were estimated at various temperatures. These results suggest that the SDS is more stable in micellized form in the SDS-water-peptide ternary systems compared to the situation in the corresponding SDS-water binary systems.
