Delayed Dissociation of Photoexcited Porphyrin Cations in a Storage Ring: Determination of Triplet Quantum Yields

Ionization and Photofragmentation of Isolated Metalloporphyrin Cations Investigated by VUV Action Spectroscopy*

We investigated the photoionization and fragmentation of isolated metal protoporphyrin IX cations (MPPIX+ with M=Fe, Co, Zn) by means of vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) action spectroscopy in the energy range of 8.5-35 eV. Experiments were carried out in the gas phase by interfacing an electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometer with a synchrotron beamline. The mass spectra and partial ion yields show that photoexcitation of the precursor ions predominantly leads to . CH2 COOH radical side-chain losses of the macrocycle with additional methyl radical (. CH3 ) side-chain losses. Ionization, in contrast, leads to the formation of the intact ionized precursor and various doubly charged fragments which are mostly due to side-chain cleavages. Although statistical fragmentation dominates, we found evidence for non-statistical processes such as new fragments involving for example single and double H2 O losses, indicating that different relaxation mechanisms are at play upon photoionization compared to photoexcitation. The measured ionization energies were 9.6±0.2 eV, 9.4±0.2 eV and 9.6±0.2 eV for FePPIX+ , CoPPIX+ and ZnPPIX+ , respectively.

The electronic structure and deexcitation pathways of an isolated metalloporphyrin ion resolved by metal L-edge spectroscopy

The local electronic structure of the metal-active site and the deexcitation pathways of metalloporphyrins are crucial for numerous applications but difficult to access by commonly employed techniques. Here, we applied near-edge X-ray absorption mass spectrometry and quantum-mechanical restricted active space calculations to investigate the electronic structure of the metal-active site of the isolated cobalt(iii) protoporphyrin IX cation (CoPPIX+) and its deexcitation pathways upon resonant absorption at the cobalt L-edge. The experiments were carried out in the gas phase, thus allowing for control over the chemical state and molecular environment of the metalloporphyrin. The obtained mass spectra reveal that resonant excitations of CoPPIX+ at the cobalt L3-edge lead predominantly to the formation of the intact radical dication and doubly charged fragments through losses of charged and neutral side chains from the macrocycle. The comparison between experiment and theory shows that CoPPIX+ is in a 3A2g triplet ground state and that competing excitations to metal-centred non-bonding and antibonding σ* molecular orbitals lead to distinct deexcitation pathways.

Color tuning of chlorophyll a and b pigments revealed from gas-phase spectroscopy

Chlorophyll (Chl) pigments are responsible for vital mechanisms in photosynthetic proteins: light harvesting, energy transfer and charge separation. A complex interplay between the Chl molecule and its microenvironment determines its transition energy. Interactions such as excitonic coupling with one or more pigments (Chls or carotenoids), axial ligation to the magnesium center, or electrostatic interactions between Chl and nearby amino-acid residues all influence the photophysical properties. Here we use time-resolved photodissociation action spectroscopy to determine transition energies of Chla/b complexes in vacuo to directly compare the impact of a negatively charged axial ligand (formate) to that of exciton coupling between two Chls. Experiments carried out at the electrostatic ion storage ring ELISA allow dissociation to be sampled on hundreds of milliseconds time scale. Absorption-band maxima of Chla-formate complexes are found at 433 ± 4 nm/2.86 ± 0.03 eV (Soret band) and in the region 654-675 nm/1.84-1.90 eV (Q band) and those of Chla dimers tagged by a quaternary ammonium ion at 419 ± 5 nm/2.96 ± 0.04 eV (Soret band) and 647 nm/1.92 eV (Q band). The axial ligand strongly affects the Chla transition energies causing redshifts of 0.21 eV of the Soret band and 0.04-0.1 eV of the Q band compared to Chla tagged by a quaternary ammonium. Slightly smaller shifts were found in case of Chlb. The redshifts are approximately twice that induced by excitonic coupling between two Chlas, also tagged by a quaternary ammonium ion. Axial ligation brings the absorption by isolated Chls very close to that of photosynthetic proteins.

Intrinsic Photophysics of Light-harvesting Charge-tagged Chlorophyll a and b Pigments

Chlorophylls a and b (Chla/b) are responsible for light-harvesting by photosynthetic proteins in plants. They display broad absorption in the visible region with multiple bands, due to the asymmetry of the macrocycle and strong vibronic coupling. Their photophysics relies on the microenvironment, with regard to transition energies as well as quenching of triplet states. Here, we firmly establish the splitting of the Q and Soret bands into x- and y- polarized bands for the isolated molecules in vacuo, and resolve vibronic features. Storage-ring experiments reveal that dissociation of photoexcited charge-tagged complexes occurs over several milliseconds, but with two different time constants. A fast decay is ascribed to dissociation after internal conversion and a slow decay to the population of a triplet state that acts as a bottleneck. Support for the latter is provided by pump-probe experiments, where a second laser pulse probes the long-lived triplet state.

Laser pump-probe experiments on microsecond to millisecond timescales at an electrostatic ion storage ring: triplet-triplet absorption by protoporphyrin-IX anions

Here we demonstrate that pump-probe experiments can be carried out on microsecond to millisecond timescales using an electrostatic ion storage ring. As a test case, we have chosen protoporhyrin IX anions that have lifetimes with respect to dissociation after photoexcitation on this time scale. Ions were photoexcited on one side of the ring with either 430- or 535-nm light (pump) and then allowed to take a certain number of revolutions before they were photoexcited by a second laser pulse (probe) with wavelengths between 650 and 950 nm. If ions were first excited by the pump, an increased yield of neutral products caused by the absorption of red light was measured in a microchannel plate detector located on the other side of the ring. This implies that it is possible to pick out ions that were photoexcited by the pump pulse and to spectroscopically characterize these ions. We report absorption spectra of 535 nm photoexcited porphyrin anions, with time delays of 0.19 and 0.57 ms between the pump and probe pulses, and find that absorption occurs over a broad region in the red.

A new technique for time-resolved daughter ion mass spectrometry on the microsecond to millisecond time scale using an electrostatic ion storage ring

A new method for time-resolved daughter ion mass spectrometry is presented, based on the electrostatic ion storage ring in Aarhus, ELISA. Ions with high internal energy, e.g., as a result of photoexcitation, dissociate and the yield of neutrals is monitored as a function of time. This gives information on lifetimes in the microsecond to millisecond time range but no information on the fragment masses. To determine the dissociation channels, we have introduced pulsed supplies with switching times of a few microseconds. This allows rapid switching from storage of parent ions to storage of daughter ions, which are dumped into a detector after a number of revolutions in the ring. A fragment mass spectrum is obtained by monitoring the daughter ion signal as a function of the ring voltages. This technique allows identification of the dissociation channels and determination of the time dependent competition between these channels.
