Photoexcitation in Cu(I) and Re(I) Complexes Containing Substituted Dipyrido[3,2-a:2‘,3‘-c]phenazine: A Spectroscopic and Density Functional Theoretical Study

Electronic Tuning of Photoexcited Dynamics in Heteroleptic Cu(I) Complex Photosensitizers

Photoexcited dynamics of heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes as noble-metal-free photosensitizers are closely intertwined with the nature of their ligands. By utilizing ultrafast optical and X-ray transient absorption spectroscopies, we characterized a new set of heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes [Cu(PPh3)2(BPyR)]+ (R = CH3, H, Br to COOCH3), with an increase in the electron-withdrawing ability of the functional group (R). We found that after the transient photooxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II), the increasing electron-withdrawing ability of R barely affects the internal conversion (IC) (e.g., Jahn-taller (JT) distortion) between singlet MLCT states. However, it does accelerate the dynamics of intersystem crossing (ISC) between singlet and triplet MLCT states and the subsequent decay from the triplet MLCT state to the ground state. The associated lifetime constants are reduced by up to 300%. Our understanding of the photoexcited dynamics in heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes through ligand electronic tuning provides valuable insight into the rational design of efficient Cu(I) complex photosensitizers.

Outpacing conventional nicotinamide hydrogenation catalysis by a strongly communicating heterodinuclear photocatalyst

Unequivocal assignment of rate-limiting steps in supramolecular photocatalysts is of utmost importance to rationally optimize photocatalytic activity. By spectroscopic and catalytic analysis of a series of three structurally similar [(tbbpy)2Ru-BL-Rh(Cp*)Cl]3+ photocatalysts just differing in the central part (alkynyl, triazole or phenazine) of the bridging ligand (BL) we are able to derive design strategies for improved photocatalytic activity of this class of compounds (tbbpy = 4,4´-tert-butyl-2,2´-bipyridine, Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl). Most importantly, not the rate of the transfer of the first electron towards the RhIII center but rather the rate at which a two-fold reduced RhI species is generated can directly be correlated with the observed photocatalytic formation of NADH from NAD+. Interestingly, the complex which exhibits the fastest intramolecular electron transfer kinetics for the first electron is not the one that allows the fastest photocatalysis. With the photocatalytically most efficient alkynyl linked system, it is even possible to overcome the rate of thermal NADH formation by avoiding the rate-determining β-hydride elimination step. Moreover, for this photocatalyst loss of the alkynyl functionality under photocatalytic conditions is identified as an important deactivation pathway.

Excited-State Switching in Rhenium(I) Bipyridyl Complexes with Donor-Donor and Donor-Acceptor Substituents

The optical properties of two Re(CO)₃(bpy)Cl complexes in which the bpy is substituted with two donor (triphenylamine, TPA, ReTPA₂) as well as both donor (TPA) and acceptor (benzothiadiazole, BTD, ReTPA-BTD) groups are presented. For ReTPA₂ the absorption spectra show intense intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) bands at 460 nm with small solvatochromic behavior; for ReTPA-BTD the ILCT transitions are weaker. These transitions are assigned as TPA → bpy transitions as supported by resonance Raman data and TDDFT calculations. The excited-state spectroscopy shows the presence of two emissive states for both complexes. The intensity of these emission signals is modulated by solvent. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy definitively assigns the excited states present in CH₂Cl₂ to be MLCT in nature, and in MeCN the excited states are ILCT in nature. DFT calculations indicated this switching with solvent is governed by access to states controlled by spin-orbit coupling, which is sufficiently different in the two solvents, allowing to select out each of the charge-transfer states.

Transitioning from Intraligand π,π* to Charge-Transfer Excited States Using Thiophene-Based Donor-Acceptor Systems

A series of electron donor-acceptor compounds are reported in which both the donor and acceptor strengths are systematically altered using mono-, bi-, and terthiophene as donors and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (btd), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz), and the corresponding rhenium(I) complex, [ReCl(CO)₃(dppz)], as acceptors. The electronic properties of the compounds are characterized using electrochemistry, electronic absorbance and emission spectroscopies, and transient absorption spectroscopy. The effect of donor and acceptor strengths on frontier molecular orbital localization and on the charge-transfer (CT) character of optical transitions is modeled using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The electronic absorption spectra of the compounds investigated are dominated by intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) transitions, where the CT character is shown to increase across the series from mono- to bi- to terthiophene but not significantly across the acceptor series. Emission is shown to originate from the absorbing state. Long-lived nonemissive states have been observed using transient absorption spectroscopy and assigned using triplet-state DFT calculations, which indicate that the lowest energy excited state has more thiophene-localized π,π* character with an increasing number of appended thiophenes.

Long-lived MLCT states for Ru(ii) complexes of ferrocene-appended 2,2'-bipyridines

In this study, we present two ruthenium(ii) diimine complexes appended with ferrocene which show metal to ligand charge transfer 3MLCT emission lifetimes around 630 ns. We also present a similar complex with two ferrocene units which has decreased emission. These complexes have been studied by electrochemical, electronic absorption, and Raman, resonance Raman and transient resonance Raman means, coupled with density functional theoretical approaches. For these systems, the optical spectra are dominated by a low energy ruthenium(ii) MLCT transition; which can be modulated by the presence of pendant ferrocene units and the extent of conjugation of the ferrocenyl bipyridine backbone. Tuning of the lowest energy transition in terms of intensity (4 to 18 × 10-3 M-1 cm-1) and energy (535 to 563 nm) was achieved by these means.

Dramatic Alteration of 3ILCT Lifetimes Using Ancillary Ligands in [Re(L)(CO)3(phen-TPA)] n+ Complexes: An Integrated Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study

The ground and excited state photophysical properties of a series of fac-[Re(L)(CO)₃(α-diimine)] ⁿ⁺ complexes, where L = Br^-, Cl^-, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap) and pyridine (py) have been extensively studied utilizing numerous electronic and vibrational spectroscopic techniques in conjunction with a suite of quantum chemical methods. The α-diimine ligand consists of 1,10-phenanthroline with the highly electron donating triphenylamine (TPA) appended in the 5 position. This gives rise to intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) states lying lower in energy than the conventional metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) state, the energies of which are red and blue-shifted, respectively, as the ancillary ligand, L becomes more electron withdrawing. The emitting state is ³ILCT in nature for all complexes studied, characterized through transient absorption and emission, transient resonance Raman (TR²), time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy and TDDFT calculations. Systematic modulation of the ancillary ligand causes unanticipated variation in the ³ILCT lifetime by 2 orders of magnitude, ranging from 6.0 μs for L = Br^- to 27 ns for L = py, without altering the nature of the excited state formed or the relative order of the other CT states present. Temperature dependent lifetime measurements and quantum chemical calculations provide no clear indication of close lying deactivating states, MO switching, contributions from a halide-to-ligand charge transfer (XLCT) state or dramatic changes in spin-orbit coupling. It appears that the influence of the ancillary ligand on the excited state lifetime could be explained in terms of energy gap law, in which there is a correlation between ln( k_nr) and E_em with a slope of -21.4 eV^-1 for the ³ILCT emission.

Modulation of Donor-Acceptor Distance in a Series of Carbazole Push-Pull Dyes; A Spectroscopic and Computational Study

A series of eight carbazole-cyanoacrylate based donor-acceptor dyes were studied. Within the series the influence of modifying the thiophene bridge, linking donor and acceptor and a change in the nature of the acceptor, from acid to ester, was explored. In this joint experimental and computational study we have used electronic absorbance and emission spectroscopies, Raman spectroscopy and computational modeling (density functional theory). From these studies it was found that extending the bridge length allowed the lowest energy transition to be systematically red shifted by 0.12 eV, allowing for limited tuning of the absorption of dyes using this structural motif. Using the aforementioned techniques we demonstrate that this transition is charge transfer in nature. Furthermore, the extent of charge transfer between donor and acceptor decreases with increasing bridge length and the bridge plays a smaller role in electronically mixing with the acceptor as it is extended.

Cu(i) vs. Ru(ii) photosensitizers: elucidation of electron transfer processes within a series of structurally related complexes containing an extended π-system

The charge transfer behavior of heteroleptic Cu(i) photosensitizers was investigated by spectroelectrochemistry and compared to their structurally related Ru(ii) complexes.

Effect of Bridge Alteration on Ground- and Excited-State Properties of Ruthenium(II) Complexes with Electron-Donor-Substituted Dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine Ligands

A series of Ru(II) 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) complexes with an electron-accepting dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz) ligand coupled to an electron-donating triarylamine (TAA) group have been investigated. Systematic alteration of a bridging unit between the dppz and TAA allowed exploration into how communication between the donor and acceptor is perturbed by distance, as well as by steric and electronic effects. The effect of the bridging group on the electronic properties of the systems was characterized using a variety of spectroscopic methods, including Fourier transform-Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy, resonance Raman spectroscopy, and transient resonance Raman (TR²) spectroscopy. These methods were used in conjunction with ground- and excited-state absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical studies, and DFT calculations. The ground-state electronic absorption spectra show distinct variation with the bridging group, with the wavelength observed for the lowest energy electronic transition ranging from 449 nm to 522 nm, accompanied by large changes in the molar absorptivity. The lowest-energy Franck-Condon state was determined to be intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) in nature for most compounds. The presence of higher-energy metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) Ru(II) → bpy and Ru(II) → dppz transitions was also confirmed via resonance Raman spectroscopy. The TR² spectra showed characteristic dppz^• - and TAA^• + vibrations, indicating that the THEXI state formed was also ILCT in nature. Excited-state lifetime measurements reveal that the rate of decay is in accordance with the energy gap law and is not otherwise affected by the nature of the bridging unit.

Synthesis and characterization of monometallic rhenium(i) complexes and their application as selective sensors for copper(ii) ions

Monometallic Re(i) complexes, selective and sensitive sensor of Cu(ii) ion, show substantial enhancement in the emission intensity, quantum yield, and lifetime due to the restriction of CN isomerization.

Stretching the phenazine MO in dppz: the effect of phenyl and phenyl–ethynyl groups on the photophysics of Re(i) dppz complexes

Dppz complexes with extended conjugation show π,π* and MLCT excited states in solution. Raman spectral features for the short-lived π,π* state are observed in single-colour transient experiments.

Heteroleptic Cu(I) bis-diimine complexes of 6,6'-dimesityl-2,2'-bipyridine: a structural, theoretical and spectroscopic study

A series of heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes containing 6,6'-dimesityl-2,2'-bipyridine and phenanthroline-, bipyridine-, and biquinoline-based ligands is studied. The HETPHEN strategy is utilized to synthesize the heteroleptic complexes, which are stable in solution. The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes are presented; the solid-state four-coordinate Cu(I) geometries are quantified by using the τ4 parameter. A feature of the crystal structures is the intramolecular π-stacking between the mesityl ring(s) and the diimine ligand; the phen-based complexes exhibit stacking between the phen ligand and one of the mesityl rings, creating a "Pac-Man" motif. On the other hand, the bpy-based complexes show different types of packing interaction, with both mesityl rings "clamping down" on the bpy based ligand to give π-stacking. Cyclic voltammetry is used to examine the redox chemistry of the complexes. The most positive potentials for the oxidation process are observed for the complexes with bulky substituents ortho to the coordination nitrogens atoms, i.e., 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline and 6,6'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine. The Cu(I) MLCT transitions of the complexes are investigated by resonance Raman spectroscopy in concert with TD-DFT calculations. The resonance Raman spectra of complexes containing substituted biquinolines are straightforward, in that vibrational bands of the biquinoline-based ligand are selectively enhanced over bpy(Mes)2 bands. This is consistent with the purple color of the complexes, due to the lower energy of the biquinoline-based LUMO compared to the bpy(Mes)2 LUMO. All the phen- and bpy-based complexes show enhancement of bpy(Mes)2 bands.

Excited state dependent electron transfer of a rhenium-dipyridophenazine complex intercalated between the base pairs of DNA: a time-resolved UV-visible and IR absorption investigation into the photophysics of fac-[Re(CO)3(F2dppz)(py)]+ bound to either [poly(dA-dT)]2 or [poly(dG-dC)]2

The transient species formed following excitation of fac-[Re(CO)(3)(F(2)dppz)(py)](+) (F(2)dppz = 11,12-difluorodipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) bound to double-stranded polynucleotides [poly(dA-dT)](2) or [poly(dG-dC)](2) have been studied by transient visible and infra-red spectroscopy in both the picosecond and nanosecond time domains. The latter technique has been used to monitor both the metal complex and the DNA by monitoring the regions 1900-2100 and 1500-1750 cm(-1) respectively. These data provide direct evidence for electron transfer from guanine to the excited state of the metal complex, which proceeds both on a sub-picosecond time scale and with a lifetime of 35 ps, possibly due to the involvement of two excited states. No electron transfer is found for the [poly(dA-dT)](2) complex, although characteristic changes are seen in the DNA-region TRIR consistent with changes in the binding of the bases in the intercalation site upon excitation of the dppz-complex.

2,3-Bis(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)quinoxaline (bmiq), a new ligand with decoupled electron transfer and metal coordination sites: the very different redox behaviour of isoelectronic complexes with [PtCl2] and [AuCl2]+

The new, potentially ambidentate heterocyclic ligand 2,3-bis(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)quinoxaline (bmiq) was obtained from 2,3-bis(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)glyoxal and 1,2-diaminobenzene. Its coordination to PtCl(2) and to the isoelectronic [AuCl(2)](+) in [AuCl(2)(bmiq)](AuCl(4)) occurs via the imine N donors of the imidazolyl groups, leading to the formation of seven-membered chelate rings with boat conformation. According to the spectroelectrochemistry (UV-vis-NIR, EPR), the reversible electron addition to the [PtCl(2)(bmiq)] and the free ligand takes place in the (non-coordinated) quinoxaline part of the molecule, similarly as for related complexes of dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazines (dppz), 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)quinoxalines (bpq) and 2,3-bis(dialkylphosphino)quinoxalines (QuinoxP). DFT calculations confirm the experimental results (structures, spectroscopy) and also point to the coordination potential of the quinoxaline N atoms. The electron addition to [AuCl(2)(bmiq)](+) takes place not at the ligand but at the metal site, according to experimental and DFT results.

Using Internal Coordinates to Describe Photoinduced Geometry Changes in MLCT Excited States

A resonance Raman intensity analysis of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transition for the rhenium compound Re(2-(2'-pyridyl)quinoxaline)(CO)(3)Cl (RePQX) is presented. Photoinduced geometry changes are calculated, and the results are presented using the vibrational normal modes and the redundant internal coordinates. A density functional theory calculation is used to determine the ground-state nonresonant Raman spectrum and a transformation matrix that transforms the redundant internal coordinates into the normal modes. The normal modes nu(37) (rhenium coordination sphere distortion) and nu(75) (ligand skeletal stretch) show the largest photoinduced geometry change (Delta = 1.0 and 0.7, respectively). A single carbonyl mode is enhanced in the resonance Raman spectra. Time-dependent density functional theory is used to calculate excited-state geometry changes, which are subsequently used to determine the signs of the photoinduced normal mode displacements. Transforming to internal coordinates reveals that all the CO bond lengths are displaced in the excited state. The Re-C and C-C ligand bond lengths are also displaced in the excited state. The results are discussed in terms of a simple one-electron picture for the electronic transition. Many bond angles and torsional coordinates are also displaced by the metal-to-ligand charge transfer, and most of these are associated with the rhenium coordination sphere. It is demonstrated that using internal coordinates presents a clear picture of the geometry changes associated with photoinduced electron transfer in metal polypyridyl systems.
