Abstract
The investigation of excited-state intramolecular charge transfer (ESICT) has been a fascinating area of research. Although the ESICT events have been studied mostly for para-disubstituted donor-acceptor type molecules, the meta-oriented donor-acceptor type molecules have also shown tremendous potential as ESICT active molecules. In the current work, a small fluorescent probe diethyl 5-amino isophthalate (DE-5A-IPA) was investigated as a potential model to investigate ESICT events in the solution as well as solid phase. DE-5A-IPA was synthesized easily starting from commercially available 5-amino isophthalic acid in excellent yield. In the solid state, differing extents of CH···π-type binding led to formation of fully planar and puckered "cyclobutane" mimic supramolecular architecture, as evidenced from the crystal structure analysis. In addition, the single crystal structure of DE-5A-IPA shows that the donor (-NH2) and acceptor (-CO2Et) are situated in the same plane, thereby assuring the prerequisites of a through-space charge transfer. DE-5A-IPA undergoes noticeable Stokes shift (in cm-1) when the polarity of the medium was changed (4820 cm-1 in hexane; 9375 cm-1 in water). The excited-state dipole moment (μe) was calculated to be 4.0 units higher than the ground-state dipole moment (μg). DE-5A-IPA had an appreciable quantum yield (0.10 ± 0.03 to 0.27 ± 0.04). The ESICT phenomenon was also investigated by ground- and excited-state structural calculations using Gaussian 16 software. The excited-state lifetime measured by the time correlated single photon counting technique was found to vary with the polarity of the solvent, thereby providing further support to the ESICT phenomenon being operative in DE-5A-IPA. Taking advantage of the -NH2 group (which is susceptible to protonation) in DE-5A-IPA, steady state and time-resolved photodynamics were investigated in solutions of varying pH values. Interestingly, the emission quantum yields as well as the emission lifetime increase with an increase in pH value, thereby establishing DE-5A-IPA as a pH-sensitive probe. The current findings shall boost the understanding of meta-oriented ESICT enabled compounds in terms of their excited-state photophysics.

Abstract
In the present work, the photoinduced charge-transfer (CT) behavior of 7-phenyl-6H-pyrido[1,2-a:3,4-b']diindole-6,13(12H)-dione (HCB) as a function of solvent polarity is reported by UV-vis absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence, and quantum chemical calculations. Calculated excited state energies of HCB at the B3PW91/6-31+G* level in vacuo and in solvents fulfill the energy requirements for singlet fission, which is the most promising path for the generation of highly efficient solar cells. The calculated potential energy curve for the compound reveals that the keto form is the predominant form in the ground state. Large bathochromic shifts in fluorescence with decreasing trends of quantum yield and lifetime indicate the occurrence of intramolecular CT from the indole bicycle to the indolinone moiety of HCB in highly polar solvents. The observed quenching of HCB fluorescence in different solvents without altering the spectral shape upon addition of a donor, triethylamine, is attributed to intermolecular CT, and it was examined in terms of the Stern-Volmer kinetics. The thermodynamics of photoinduced CT processes in HCB was analyzed using the measured photophysical data and cyclic voltammetric redox potentials via the Rehm-Weller equation. Analyses with the semiclassical Marcus theory suggest that both the CT processes fall under the Marcus normal region.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and photophysical properties of a coumarin based probe (1E)-1-(1-(7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl) ethylidene) thiosemicarbazide (DIDOT). DIDOT shows a polarity dependent change in the emission maxima in the solution phase. This is explained by the increased dipole moment in the excited state by an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. DIDOT can successfully detect Zn(ii) in aqueous methanol by a shift in the charge transfer emission maxima from approximately 506 to approximately 535 nm. This shift led to a change in the color of the emission from green to yellow under UV-light. The mechanism of Zn(ii) detection has been delineated using electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and fluorescence time resolved studies coupled with theoretical calculations. The increment in the charge transfer in the Zn(ii) complex of DIDOT over the bare receptor as a consequence of conformational locking was determined to be the underlying cause of the cation detection phenomenon. The limit of detection and binding constant values of DIDOT towards Zn(ii) were approximately 3 × 10-8 M and 2.35 × 105 M-1 respectively. Finally, the practical utility of DIDOT has been demonstrated by successful detection and quantification of Zn(ii) in spiked water samples.

Abstract
We report the photophysical properties of a synthetic asymmetric azine-based compound (17Z,18E)-4'-((E)-3-phenylallylidene)-1'-(dimethylamino)-1-((pyren-8-yl)methylene)hydrazine (PYNC). The molecule PYNC shows an appreciable red shift in the emission maximum in a wide range of solvents. In water, PYNC shows the characteristic feature of excimer formation exclusively. However, in all other solvents, the excimer band is present alongside the charge transfer emission band. The assignment of charge transfer and excimer bands has been established by various steady-state emission spectral data. PYNC, owing to this novel excimer-coupled charge transfer phenomenon, can be a potential probe for studying various supramolecular assemblies of biological interest.

Abstract
When adding two azobenzene chromophores on a dithienylethene molecule, the irradiation at 450 nm can effectively arouse the cycloreversion reaction of the ring-closed dithienylethene. We investigated the frontier molecular orbitals and absorption properties of such series of molecules and inferred the mechanism of the ring-opening reaction. The 450 nm light sensed by the side azobenzene groups can excite the whole molecule to a high excited state, and through electronic transition and energy transfer the active electron may centre on the dithienylethene ring part, then the ring-opening happens. While for the ring-open form, the energy of the 450 nm light is not high enough to promote the electron to the exact molecular orbital occupying the central dithienylethene ring, so it cannot cause the ring-closing reaction.

Abstract
The polarity sensitive intra-molecular charge transfer (ICT) emission from (E)-3-(4-Methylaminophenyl) acrylic acid methyl ester (MAPAME) is found to show distinct changes once introduced into the nano-cavities of cyclodextrins in aqueous environment. Movement of the molecule from the more polar aqueous environment to the less polar, hydrophobic cyclodextrin interior is marked by the blue shift of the CT emission band with simultaneous fluorescence intensity enhancement. The emission spectral changes on complexation with the α- and β-CD show different stoichiometries as observed from the Benesi-Hildebrand plots. Fluorescence anisotropy and lifetime measurements were performed to probe the different behaviors of MAPAME in aqueous α- and β-CD solutions.

Abstract
A donor acceptor substituted aromatic system 5-(4-dimethylamino-phenyl)-penta-2,4-dienoic acid (DMAPPDA) has been synthesized and its spectral properties have been explored on the basis of steady state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Spectral features point largely towards a possible occurrence of photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer process from the donor NMe2 group to the acceptor acid group. Solvent dependency of the large Stokes' shifted emission band and the calculated large excited state dipole moment support the polar character of the charge transfer excited state. Quantum yield calculations and effect of addition of acid and base on the steady state spectra were also performed to further scrutinize the excited state CT character.

Abstract
Photophysical properties of methyl ester of 2,6-dimethyl-1-amino-4-benzoic acid (M26DMB) have been investigated using steady state absorption and emission spectroscopy and time-resolved emission spectroscopy. Interestingly, not only in polar solvents, the molecule M26DMB having a weak primary amino donor group shows broad red-shifted emission band even in non-polar environment which in all probability arises from closely spaced local and charge transfer (CT) states. Clear dual fluorescence in polar protic solvents comprises of less intense local emission band and strong red-shifted CT band. The position of the red-shifted emission band is dependent on both the polarity and the hydrogen-bonding ability of the solvent.
