Formation of Regular Surface-Supported Mesostructures with Periodicity Controlled by Chemical Reaction Rate

Stationary stripe patterns and chemical waves on the bimetallic Rh(110)/Ni surface during the H2 + O2 reaction

Chemical wave patterns that develop in the O₂ + H₂ reaction on a bimetallic Rh(110)/Ni surface have been studied with photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) in the 10^-6 to 10^-4 mbar range. The bifurcation diagram for Ni coverages up to 3 monolayers (ML) was mapped out for T = 770 K. Stationary concentration patterns of macroscopic stripes as well as target patterns and irregular chemical waves were observed.

Dynamics of Ultrathin Vanadium Oxide Layers on Rh(111) and Rh(110) Surfaces During Catalytic Reactions

Over the past 35 years rate oscillations and chemical wave patterns have been extensively studied on metal surfaces, while little is known about the dynamics of catalytic oxide surfaces under reaction conditions. Here we report on the behavior of ultrathin V oxide layers epitaxially grown on Rh(111) and Rh(110) single crystal surfaces during catalytic methanol oxidation. We use photoemission electron microscopy and low-energy electron microscopy to study the surface dynamics in the 10^-6 to 10^-2 mbar range. On VO _x /Rh(111) we find a ripening mechanism in which VO _x islands of macroscopic size move toward each other and coalesce under reaction conditions. A polymerization/depolymerization mechanism of VO _x that is sensitive to gradients in the oxygen coverage explains this behavior. The existence of a substructure in VO _x islands gives rise to an instability, in which a VO _x island shrinks and expands around a critical radius in an oscillatory manner. At 10^-2 mbar the VO _x islands are no longer stable but they disintegrate, leading to turbulent redistribution dynamics of VO _x . On the more open and thermodynamically less stable Rh(110) surface the behavior of VO _x is much more complex than on Rh(111), as V can also populate subsurface sites. At low V coverage, one finds traveling interface pulses in the bistable range. A state-dependent anisotropy of the surface is presumably responsible for intriguing chemical wave patterns: wave fragments traveling along certain crystallographic directions, and coexisting different front geometries in the range of dynamic bistability. Annealing to 1000 K causes the formation of macroscopic VO _x islands. Under more reducing conditions dendritic growth of a VO _x overlayer is observed.

Physics of active emulsions

Phase separating systems that are maintained away from thermodynamic equilibrium via molecular processes represent a class of active systems, which we call active emulsions. These systems are driven by external energy input, for example provided by an external fuel reservoir. The external energy input gives rise to novel phenomena that are not present in passive systems. For instance, concentration gradients can spatially organise emulsions and cause novel droplet size distributions. Another example are active droplets that are subject to chemical reactions such that their nucleation and size can be controlled, and they can divide spontaneously. In this review, we discuss the physics of phase separation and emulsions and show how the concepts that govern such phenomena can be extended to capture the physics of active emulsions. This physics is relevant to the spatial organisation of the biochemistry in living cells, for the development of novel applications in chemical engineering and models for the origin of life.

Chemical waves in the O2 + H2 reaction on a Rh(111) surface alloyed with nickel. I. Photoelectron emission microscopy

Chemical waves that arise in the H₂ + O₂ reaction on a bimetallic Rh(111)/Ni surface have been studied in the 10^-6 and 10^-5 mbar range at T = 773 K with photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Nickel coverages of 0.3, 0.6, and 1.0 monolayers were investigated. Coadsorbed with some oxygen, Ni starts to penetrate the Rh bulk region substantially only beyond 900 K. In the 10^-5 mbar range, chemical waves are characterized by three distinct gray levels in PEEM. This number reduces to only two levels in the 10^-6 mbar range. In situ LEED showed the periodic appearance of a (n × 1) (n = 8, 10) pattern during chemical waves which was assigned to a 2D-Ni oxide. With in situ AES, one observes that the bright phase in PEEM correlates with a high Ni coverage and the dark phase with a low Ni coverage.

Spectromicroscopy of pulses transporting alkali metal in a surface reaction

The NO + H2 reaction on a potassium promoted Rh(110) surface is shown to sustain the formation of spatio-temporal periodic patterns leading to mass transport phenomena. The excitation of pulses and the mass transport mechanism are studied in the 10(-7) and 10(-6) mbar pressure range, with the potassium coverage varying between θK = 0.05 and θK = 0.12 ML. Using spectroscopic photoemission and spectroscopic low energy electron microscopy (SPELEEM) as well as related microprobe diffraction techniques, we show that the excitation mechanism comprises a cyclic structural transformation: K + O-coadsorbate → (2 × 1)-N → c(2 × 4)-2O,N → K + O coadsorbate. Laterally resolved spectroscopy demonstrates that potassium is accumulated in front of the nitrogen pulses, suggesting that adsorbed nitrogen acts as a diffusion barrier for potassium.

Nonequilibrium microstructures in reactive monolayers as soft matter systems

Chemical systems provide classical examples of nonequilibrium pattern formation. Reactions in weak aqueous solutions, such as the extensively investigated Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, demonstrate a rich variety of patterns, ranging from travelling fronts to rotating spiral waves and chemical turbulence. Pattern formation in such systems is based on interplay between the reactions and diffusion. Intrinsically, this puts a restriction on the minimum length scale of the developing structures, which cannot be shorter than the diffusion length of the reactants. However, much smaller nonequilibrium structures, with characteristic lengths reaching down to nanoscales, are also possible. They are found in reactive soft matter, where energetic interactions between molecules are present as well. In these systems, chemical reactions and diffusion interfere with phase transitions, yielding active, stationary or dynamic microstructures. Nonequilibrium soft-matter microstructures are of fundamental importance for biological cells and may have interesting engineering applications. In this Minireview, we focus on the microstructures found in reactive soft-matter monolayers at solid surfaces or liquid-air interfaces.

Mass transport of alkali metal with pulses in a surface reaction

It is shown that the pulses which develop in the NO+H2 reaction on an alkali promoted Rh(110) surface reaction can transport alkali metal. This leads to the accumulation of a substantial alkali-metal concentration in the collision area of pulse trains. Realistic simulations revealed that the effect is due to the strong energetic interactions of the alkali metal with coadsorbates, i.e., the attractive interaction with coadsorbed oxygen and the effectively repulsive interaction with coadsorbed nitrogen.

Imaging with Chemical Analysis: Adsorbed Structures Formed during Surface Chemical Reactions

Imaging surfaces and interfaces with structural and chemical specificity has been essential for understanding a variety of phenomena occurring in adsorbed layers during surface chemical reactions. A recent achievement of chemical imaging with spectroscopic analysis is the experimental proof of theoretically predicted spontaneous formation of regular patterns of metal adatoms during surface chemical reactions. An attractive feature of this finding is that the reaction rate and adlayer coverage can be employed to precisely control the morphology of the structures. The mechanisms of these self-organisation phenomena, driven by the interplay between energetic principles and kinetics, opens a conceptually novel route to creating a wide range of surface-supported functional structures at the micro- and nanometre length scales.
